Osim
pristupa Web stranama direktno iz dBASE-a, pomoću Table Publish
Web expert-a je sada moguće bazu pretvoriti u statičnu HTML
tabelu, a Table Search Web expert omogućava automatsko kreiranje
CGI programa sa mogućnostima pregleda i pretraživanja baze preko
Web-a i slično.

Imam jedno glupo pitanje u vezi Access-a 2.0. Napravim lepo
"table" sa imenima, adresama, i telefonima prijatelja. I treba mi
i da on rezultate izbaci u obliku recimo "Tabular Form"-a.
formular nego onako kako sam spomenuo.

format. Zatim iznad svake kolone (ako već nije napisano) stavi neki
naziv. Npr. iznad kolona sa adresama napiši adresa i sl. Zatim
datoteku snimi. Napomena podaci moraju obavezno da ti budu u listu
Probao sam i radi.

odrediš koja polja ti trebaju, on ih ubaci u dokument, ti ih
rasporediš po strani (paper size - envelope) kako ti odgovara,
odrediš fontove, veličinu i pustiš u štampu.
koristi.

Oracle-Informix hearing postponed
A court hearing scheduled for Friday that was to focus on the
defection of 11Informix employees to Oracle has been postponed
for as many as several weeks, an Informix spokesman said. Both
companies want additional discovery time, the spokesman said.
The hearing will be held in an Oregon Circuit Court in Portland
to determine whether Oracle should be restricted from learning
Informix trade secrets from the employees. Oracle has said the
employees will not even be working on database technology but on
development of the Oracle Network Computing Architecture for
Web-based computing.
Oracle this week continued to criticize Informix, describing the
Informix-Universal Server object-relational database in a memo as
immature and poorly tested. Informix officials called the memo

Šta donosi novi Oracle server, verzija 8...
Details of Oracle8 emerge as new beta version becomes available
Still keeping mum about the progress of its object strategy,
Oracle is nonetheless projecting vast improvements in
scalability, management, and performance for its upcoming
Oracle8 database.
The company this week will unveil a new beta version of
Oracle8, as well as a shopping list of features and how they
will work.
Company officials, however, still will not discuss object
support further. Oracle8 will support data extensions through
CORBA object linkages.
Due midyear, Oracle8 will scale to tens of thousands of users
through multiplexing software called a concentrator, which
enables multiple users to access the database through a single
network connection.
Another technique being deployed is connection pooling,
allowing users to share idle connections. The relational
database management system will offer increased transaction
support through code path reduction, which minimizes code
required for executing instructions, and will make stored
procedures reusable in memory.
Other features of Oracle8 include:
- Server-based queuing, so transactions can be funneled into
the system without having to wait for prior transactions to
finish;
- Database availability enhanced via partitioning, in which
tables are spread across multiple disks so they can be used
even if a disk crashes;
- Backup and recovery managed by the database server so that
the system only backs up what is needed on that day;
- A new parallel replication feature for faster database
reproduction through multiple data pipes between servers;
and
- Database management via a graphical version of the Oracle
Enterprise Manager, to be sold separately from the
database.
A new version of the Oracle network management product, called
Net 8, will enable log-ons to multiple databases remotely or
via the Web through a single sign-on.

JSQL, odnosno Java SQL.
IBM, Oracle, Tandem team on spec to ease
Java-app-to-database connectivity
With an eye toward pushing Java deeper into the enterprise,
IBM, Oracle, and Tandem joined forces Wednesday to specify a
Java language extension, dubbed Java SQL (JSQL), that
simplifies the ability to build business-critical Java database
applications.
The three companies said they plan to support development of
the JSQL standard, submit it to the ISO/IEC standards body and
then create products that adhere to the specification. The
goal, they said, is to simplify Java access to relational
databases so that robust applications can be written that
combine Java's ease of use with the database's high-level
functionality.
"Making it simpler to develop business critical Java
applications that rely on enterprise data is crucial if we are
to realize the potential of networks for business," said Don
Haderle, IBM fellow and vice president of data management
architecture and technology for IBM Software.
The idea behind JSQL is to complement and extend JDBC
Java-to-database connectivity, thereby enabling quicker
development through more concise syntax, and safer code through
compile-time-error checking, company officials said.
JSQL is targeted at enterprise developers who write
applications with static SQL. The reference implementation of
JSQL will be based on a precompiler that generates standard
Java code with JDBC calls, officials said. The triad of
companies claims JSQL will deliver the following benefits:
- Portable Java applications, allowing developers to write
once and have the application run on any platform that
supports Java and any database that supports JSQL;
- Language bridging, enabling linkage from SQL to Java by
automatically mapping SQL types to Java types;
- Automatic mapping of SQL types to Java objects to reduce
the amount of Java code that needs to be written to access
a database; and
- Compile-time checking to reduce the number of hard-to-find
run-time errors.

Nova, prilično izmenjena verzija IBM-ovog DB2 SQL servera nailazi
tih testova.
DB2 pulls out the big guns
Beta tests find more muscle,
great looks in IBM's revamped database
IBM's complete overhaul of its DB2 database server lets loose
with all barrels, armed with major new parallel processing
enhancements, a vastly easier client setup procedure, integrated
replication and a fresh new interface that's right on target.
In testing nearly feature-complete beta code of DB2 5.0 Universal
Database, we found that IBM has incorporated these substantial
technical improvements while still preserving DB2 2.0's current
strengths: its user-extendible architecture, multimedia
extenders, highly tuned optimizer, sophisticated query rewriting,
and native support for Java and JDBC (Java Database
Connectivity).
Although IBM still has some rough edges to smooth over and the
selection of third-party extenders and tools for DB2 5.0 is
woefully small, the database's feature set shows a degree of
cohesion and completeness that has eluded its competitors.
The potent combination of DB2 Parallel Edition's parallel query,
load, index creation, and backup and restore technology with DB2
5.0's far more capable new interface makes it a no-brainer
upgrade for current DB2 2.0 shops. The upcoming release is a
must-evaluate product for other sites as well, although those
that need to integrate DB2 with third-party vertical applications
will find few that support IBM's database.
Prices for DB2 5.0 have not been set, but IBM plans to ship the
product in September. The initial release will run on AIX, HP-UX,
Windows NT, OS/2 and Solaris (on SPARCstations). A
local-access-only developer version also will be available for
Windows 95.
All this and good looks, too
Gone with the new release will be DB2 2.0's dumpy, ham-fisted
interface, replaced by an elegant, tree-style Explorer interface.
We could easily browse through database resources and manage
server resources for either local or remote machines.
Tabbed dialog boxes called SmartGuides speeded up common
management tasks such as table and database creation and data
backup and restore operations. While investigating DB2 5.0's
backup and restore capabilities, we learned that DB2 defaults to
discarding its transaction log after commits, a dangerous default
that, in the case of database disk failure, will result in the
loss of all transactions performed since the last backup. IBM
should change this default in the shipping code.
The painful DB2 2.0 client setup procedure (which requires
entering long hexadecimal network addresses) will be just a bad
memory with DB2 5.0.
A new client configuration SmartGuide now has a server
auto-discovery feature and (fortunately, because the
auto-discover tool never worked in our testing) also can accept
server names instead of numeric addresses.
The same SmartGuide also made it simple to set up connectivity
between DB2 5.0 servers, a prerequisite for enabling replication
between them. IBM's separate DataPropagator, a replication add-on
for DB2 2.0, has been folded in the base product.
However, when we set up replication links between servers, we had
to go through a cumbersome series of command-line steps and start
a series of replication programs for each replication link.
IBM also will support shared-nothing clustering on networked
RS/6000 and RS/6000 SP clusters with the initial DB2 5.0 release.
IBM officials said the company will provide NT clustering shortly
after the initial DB2 5.0 release. We tested early prototype code
of this hot technology on a two-node NT cluster and saw 70
percent to 140 percent improvements in our load and query times.
IBM also plans to provide NT failover support for DB2 5.0 using
Microsoft Corp.'s Wolfpack clustering libraries, which are
expected to ship before DB2.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
DB2 Universal Database 5.0 beta
Pros: Cons:
Parallel query, Few extenders
index creation, and third-party
load and backup; tools;
powerful new cumbersome
interface; nearly replication
instant client management
setup; built-in tools.
replication.
Summary: The beta of IBM's DB2 5.0 is shaping up to be the most
technically advanced database server on the market,
especially when clustering support is added. It will be
a huge step forward for current DB2 shops and is sure to
muscle its way into other markets as well.

mesto nalaze u bazama.
Relational-model pioneer calls
for a query language to replace SQL
The advent of object technology means that the software
industry needs a new query language that can replace SQL,
according to Chris Date, one of the original proponents of the
relational-database model.
This year, vendors have been adding object support to their
relational databases. This process has resulted in increasing
signs of strain on SQL.
Although SQL will likely remain the dominant query language for
use with relational databases in the near future, observers
said its importance will dwindle as users grapple with
diverging methods of storing more than alphanumeric strings in
their databases.
And although the major vendors continue to pledge allegiance to
SQL, many are implementing proprietary language extensions for
use with object-relational databases.
According to Date, an independent consultant, there are logical
problems in SQL that make it difficult to handle objects. The
solution, he said, is a new query language.
"The relational model is an elegant implementation of set
theory and predicate logic, the foundations of modern
mathematics," Date said. "You can get the object functionality
you want from the relational model with a new query language."
But with plenty of their own investments in SQL, not to mention
those of their users, vendors are more conservative on the
topic.
"I'm sure there are better ways [than SQL] to search new data
types, but SQL is too deeply entrenched in most businesses,"
said Jeff Jones, IBM's program manager for data management, in
Santa Clara, Calif.
IBM's DB2 Universal Database, which is due out this fall, will
use data extenders to give users the option of storing new data
types in the database or referencing them with pointers outside
the relational table space.
Market-leader Oracle will also implement pointers to support
objects in Oracle8, which is set to unveil in June.
"Chris [Date] has objected to SQL for a long time," said Ken
Jacobs, the program manager for Oracle8, in Redwood Shores,
Calif. "No language is perfect. We are supportive of the SQL
ANSI [American National Standards Institute] committee's
efforts to extend SQL."
But it is the slow pace at which ANSI is working on the
object-extensible version of the language, called SQL 3, that
is pushing vendors to forge their own solutions.
Microsoft is advancing an OLE DB-inspired data-interface
architecture that will support data queries in its Visual J++,
Visual C++, and Visual Basic tools, as well as in SQL.
"SQL is limited, and we want users to be able to use any
language," said Tom Kreyche, product manager for SQL Server
marketing at Microsoft, in Redmond, Wash.
Sybase is taking a similar approach with its plans for a
comprehensive three-tier Adaptive Component Architecture.
"We are going to have a common language environment that will
support Transact SQL and our version of SQL-stored procedures,"
said Mike Wipperfeld, senior director of product marketing at
Sybase, in Emeryville, Calif. "We will support SQL 3, but we
have chosen to implement an object extensions based on
JavaSoft's Object Model."
Sybase's object extensions will debut in a beta version of the
Adaptive Server Anywhere product by the end of the year.
Informix Software, which leaped ahead of the pack with its
object-relational Universal Server earlier this year, continues
to swear allegiance to SQL.

Potencijalni sigurnosni problem za korisnike novog Microsoft-ovog
ODBC 3.0 drajvera - šifre korisnika mogu postati vidljive.
Microsoft's ODBC faces critics,
Access feature seen as security risk
A feature in Microsoft's latest implementation of the ODBC API
has some users concerned about potential security breaches.
Version 3.0 of ODBC offers an expanded Trace function which,
when logging network activity related to a database, also
supplies names and passwords of users, Microsoft acknowledged.
Trace, which Microsoft designed as a network debugging utility,
did not furnish names and passwords previous to Version 3.0.
This new function has raised security concerns at a large
manufacturer in the Northwest that asked not to be identified.
"They have gutted the security," said Dan Gordon, an
independent consultant who is working with the manufacturer.
"There is no security anymore on any ODBC products."
Intruders, either internal or external, could break into a
system with the data supplied by the new Trace implementation,
Gordon said.
ODBC 3.0 became available last fall in Microsoft's Software
Development Kit and was delivered with the Office 97
applications package in January.
In earlier versions of ODBC, Microsoft stored this password and
name identifier function in a separate utility called Spy. But
this function was not accessible from the desktop like Trace
is, Gordon said.
A Microsoft official said there is a Data Definition Language
(DDL) available to prevent users from uncovering passwords and
user names with Trace.
However, this DLL requires installation at each user's desktop,
said Tom Kreyche, product manager for Microsoft SQL Server.
Another solution for those concerned with Trace's security is
for system administrators to disable the function when they are
starting to deploy ODBC 3.0-compliant software, Kreyche said.
"If you have bad security policies, these tools are risks,"
Kreyche said.

Novi MS SQL server će kasniti, no ipak evo nekih detalja o njemu
i drugim planovima MS-a na polju baza podataka...
Microsoft may not ship next version of SQL Server until 1998
Microsoft's next release of SQL Server promises many
enhancements, but it may not ship this year as originally
anticipated.
Although the company has committed to May or June for the beta
release, there is no set date for commercial availability, said
Tom Kreyche, a product manager for Microsoft SQL Server.
Key features in the release that will follow Version 6.5,
code-named Sphinx, include a mobile version for Windows 95 that
will include replication with back-end server databases. A
multimaster replication function will let multiple servers act
as data-subscription services.
Other improvements include the capability to store HTML forms
directly in the database and to write stored procedures in
Visual Basic. Microsoft may also add support for Java-based
stored procedures, Kreyche said. Web-based database management
also is planned. A multiserver-management function will enable
scheduling of jobs on multiple servers from a single console
rather than having to schedule jobs from each server.
Microsoft also plans to separate the query processor from the
database, letting the processor be used for other functions via
an OLE database interface. This is part of Microsoft's plan to
support new data types, such as video and audio, in the SQL
Server platform.
Additionally, the processor will be rebuilt to allow more
efficient queries and multiple indexes for finding data.
Separate from this upgrade, Microsoft is also developing a
relational online analytical-processing product, code-named
Plato.

Nova verzija IBM-ovog SQL servera (DB2 Universal Database 5.0) je
raspoloživa u Beta verziji i izaziva veoma pozitivne reakcije
zbog svoje skalabilnosti, performansi, integracije sa Javom i
Webom, otvorene arhitekture (ekstenderi), podrške za
multimediju, lakšeg administriranja i korišćenja... Izlazi u
septembru, uz njega će se dobijati i Lotus Approach, a u nastavku
sledi prikaz i test Beta verzije.
Latest DB2 exceeds competition
Whether you are currently using DB2 or are in the process of
selecting a database for your company, you owe it to yourself to
evaluate IBM's DB2 Universal Database 5.0. The DB2 beta release
reveals an easy-to-use graphical management interface,
performance enhancements, as well as accessibility in Web
environments that is on par with Informix Universal Server.
However, DB2 surpasses the Informix offering by providing
significant options for scalability and extensibility.
The forthcoming Oracle8, which is scheduled to ship in the third
quarter, will offer some stiff competition.
The architecture of this new version of DB2 is somewhat similar
to Informix Universal Server. However, DB2 Universal Database
extends more effectively to all tiers of the enterprise, from
laptops to high-end multiprocessor environments and large legacy
systems. This scalability is especially evident in the product's
Web and clustering features.
Extending the data
Like Informix's DataBlade technology, IBM's Extenders let
application developers manipulate multimedia data types. DB2
Universal Database includes four Extenders that handle text,
image, audio, and video data. In addition, IBM is working with
third-party vendors to create Extenders for additional data
types.
DB2 Universal Database also joins the growing number of database
products that currently let developers store business logic and
rules as objects. Other expected additions for the product
include support for user-defined types and functions as well as
large objects.
I liked the new Table Function for better integrating external
data into a DB2 database. With this feature, DB2 SQL can not only
process external data, but can also capture nonrelational data.
As with competing database products from Oracle and Sybase, IBM's
DB2 Universal Database now supports Rollup and Cube features for
grouping data and performing cross-tabulations, respectively.
Also, built-in functions provide rapid query performance by
optimizing SQL execution.
Connecting the data
Key to this version of DB2 Universal Database is the ease with
which it can connect to a multitiered or Web environment. Version
5.0 can support Java and Java Database Connectivity (JDBC). The
product includes the Net.Data add-on to assist developers with
creating Java applets and connecting to DB2 databases via JDBC.
You can deploy applets created with Net.Data to major Web
servers, such as Microsoft and Netscape. I used Net.Data to
easily create some Java-based DB2 applets. I then deployed them
on my Microsoft Web server for access by my browser-based users.
To access and manage data on large legacy systems, this version
supports IBM's Distributed Relational Database Architecture
(DRDA). This allows a DB2 Universal Database to connect to and
interact with DB2 data on platforms that support DRDA, such as
MVS and AS/400.
DB2 Universal Database 5.0 was quite capable of replicating with
other servers. Administrators can push and pull database changes
between servers with options for both asynchronous and
synchronous updates.
The replication-management interface in the beta software I
received was a bit rough, but this should be fixed prior to DB2's
release in September.
DB2 Universal Database includes Lotus Approach, which provides
additional decision-support capabilities not available in DB2.
Accessing and graphing DB2 data from within Approach proved easy.
Further integration of Approach with DB2 is expected in future
versions.
Scaling the data
One of DB2 Universal Database's greatest strengths is its
capability to easily scale data from laptops to clustered
environments and massively parallel processors.
Those working in large-scale environments will appreciate DB2's
improved performance optimization in parallel transaction or
query settings.
I noticed performance boosts to memory management, such as large
buffer pools and 64-bit memory support, during my tests. DB2
Universal Database seemed to respond rapidly, even in my
simulated midsize company data environment.
Although I could not thoroughly test it, DB2 Universal Database
also features expanded support for very large database handling
and extension of databases across multiple nodes and partitions.
As you might expect in an enterprise environment, DB2 is strong
in the area of load balancing, redundancy, and backup-and-restore
capabilities.
A major improvement over the previous release of DB2 is its
Control Center graphical database-management toolset. The Control
Center's navigational capabilities make administering a DB2
database a breeze.
In addition, most of the administration functions (such as
performance configuration, monitoring, and operation scheduling)
are well-integrated into the easy-to-use Control Center
interface.
DB2 Universal Database includes wizardlike features called
SmartGuides. Using the Performance Configuration SmartGuide, I
adjusted the performance of my DB2 server, and then had the
option to review a summary of my changes, execute them, or save
them to a script for processing later.
Whether you are configuring network parameters, scheduling
database activities, or monitoring performance, the graphical
presentation in the Control Center is a great improvement. DB2
also adds greater support for open standards such as SNMP, X
Open, and ODBC Level 3. IBM has indicated even greater support
for various platforms and standards in the future.
IBM's DB2 Universal Database 5.0's open-standards support,
interoperability, and scalability make it an easy-to-use,
flexible database solution worth evaluating.

Ako ste trenutno korisnik Sybase-ovog ili Informix-ovog SQL

IBM woos Informix, Sybase DB users
Looking to capitalize on the financial struggles of its database
peers, IBM is rolling out a program to help Informix Software
Inc. and Sybase Inc. users migrate their databases and
applications to IBM's DB2.
The program, announced at DB/Expo here yesterday, includes
consulting and training as well as a migration tool kit called
the SQL Conversion Workbench. Co-developed by IBM and ManTech
Systems Engineering Corp., of Fairfax, Va., SQL Conversion
Workbench converts application code to native DB2 code.
Converted applications will run on DB2 on OS/390, major Unix
flavors including AIX, Windows NT and OS/2. The tool kit will
work with the DB2 Universal Database, which is now in beta and is
expected to ship later this year.
The SQL Conversion Workbench will be generally available in the
third quarter. Pricing for the migration program was not
available. Additional information is available at
www.mantech.com.
Separately at DB/Expo, a long list of third-party vendors
endorsed IBM's DB2 Universal Database, although none of the
supporters is building DB2 Extenders, the plug-in modules that
allow the database to handle nonrelational data. Nonetheless, DB2
Common Server, the current version of the product, already has
several extenders to handle data like audio and text.
Among those endorsing the upcoming database are Bluestone Inc.
with its Sapphier/Web development tool; Infospace Inc., with its
Space SQL Java-based query and reporting tool; Formida Software
Corp., with its Universal Development Environment application
development tool; and Andyne Computing Ltd., Brio Technology Inc.
and Business Objects Inc., with their respective end-user query
and reporting tools.
DB2 Universal Database is the next generation of IBM's database
for Windows NT and Unix. Now in beta, it combines the platform
support and functionality now found in DB2 Common Server and DB2
Parallel Edition.

Krajem juna Oracle najzad izbacuje Oracle 8, objktno-relacionu
bazu podataka.
Oracle finally set to launch Oracle8
After years of anticipation, Oracle on June 24 will unveil the
Oracle8 object-relational database, although object support
will cost extra and other features will arrive later.
The database, with its speed, object support, and capacity,
will be positioned as a network-computing platform, said Mark
Jarvis, Oracle vice president of server marketing.
The most talked-about new feature is the capability to
incorporate objects and new data types into the database via
Data Cartridges. Cartridges extend the database with geospatial
and other nontraditional data types.
Other features, such as inclusion of a Java virtual machine to
enable execution of Java-stored procedures, will appear in the
subsequent release, now called Oracle 8.1.
Oracle8's object support, which Jarvis said will be optional,
includes functions such as Object Types, in which users can
store items such as a purchase order with its component logic
in the database. Another feature, Object Views, extends object
functionality to existing relational data.
"I think you have to consider that not everybody wants an
object- relational database, as Informix's mistakes of the past
six to 12 months have shown," Jarvis said, referring to the
rival vendor's problems after releasing its Informix Universal
Server object-relational database.
But a user at Chase Manhattan Bank, which is eyeing Oracle8 for
its multimedia potential, said he would not welcome having to
pay extra for object support.
"We're looking for complete packages coming from all our
vendors as far as object-relational is concerned, not an
add-on," said Bill Rykowsky, vice president of database
administration at the New York bank.
Another user said he expected a slow migration to Oracle8.
"I don't think they're going to get much market penetration
with Oracle8 until well into 1998," said Michael Abbey, a vice
president of the International Oracle Users Group, in Ottawa.
Originally slated for release in 1994 and then pushed to 1995,
Oracle8 will ship this month on Windows NT and Sun Solaris.
Unix versions for Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Digital platforms
will follow shortly afterward, according to Oracle, and
versions for other operating systems are planned for release in
August. A parallel version will be among Oracle8 products.
The database also features new partitioning functions to
improve data warehousing and support for tens of thousands of
users and terabytes of data. Such upsizing of Oracle's database
makes it a better match for competing against mainframe
databases, one analyst said.
Pricing for Oracle8 is expected to be similar to the $1,500 per
user now charged for the enterprise edition of Oracle7 and $295
per user for the workgroup variant.
