Corel finalizing WordPerfect Suite 8, NC plans Corel Corp. plans a massive advertising campaign in June and July to back the release of WordPerfect Suite 8, due to go into gold code in a week and a half, according to Michael Cowpland, Corel's president and CEO. Cowpland, said Corel has a chance to gain four to five points of market share on Microsoft Corp. in the suite market, thanks in part to glitches in Office 97, such as problems with its Outlook messaging component, and to the release of the Java-based WordPerfect Suite 8. "We have to take advantage of this window," Cowpland said. He expects the Java suite to form 20 percent to 25 percent of Corel's suite sales next year. Separately, Cowpland said Corel will replace its handheld network computer with a notebook-size NC in November. "The handheld ... is re-emerging as a full notebook-size computer with an NC inside," Cowpland said. He added that Corel is working on the notebook with an unnamed manufacturer that will retool its hardware to support the StrongARM chip from Digital Equipment Corp. and Advanced RISC Machines. The Corel system will use an operating system that combines the Java Virtual Machine, the Microware embedded operating system and a graphics layer provided by Corel. Cowpland said the machine's performance will be comparable to a 200MHz Pentium machine, and will cost between $2,000 and $2,500.
