Junona i guske
Bivsi jugoslavenski sahista ( igrao pre II svetskog rata ) i
izmedju dve pripadnice lepseg pola.
oko table, cupajuci kosu i grizuci nokte.
Devojka, s jedne strane zadovoljna sto je uz pomoc srece
dobila partiju, ali s druge strane uvredjena takvom izjavom, odgovori:
> U tom jatu je bilo i gusana! <
> A ne, koleginice, uopste niste u pravu. Ne samo da su bile
iskljucivo guske, nego su bile i nevine. <
namenjene zrtvovanju Junoni, boginji plodnosti. Pandan Junoni je Hera
i Tanit.
Hera. Starogrcka mitoloska boginja, zena Zeusova.
imenima Zeusa, Posejdona, Aresa i Dionisosa. Pripada Mikenskoj
religiji u doba dok su jos ziveli ostaci starog fetisizma. Hram
joj je podignut u Tirintu, u dorskom arhitektonsko stilu, i jos
Tanit. Punska boginja u Africi.
Junona. U starorimskoj mitologiji glavna boginja - sestra i
zena Jupiterova.
sah.3euribia,
O sudijama.
Pravila sahovske igre ne mogu obuhvatiti sve moguce situacije do
kojih moze doci tokom partije. Pravila pretpostavljaju da sudije poseduju
potrebna znanja, zdrav smisao za ocenjivanje situacija i apsolutnu
objektivnost.
Sudije treba da pravilno, logicki i uvazavajuci posebne okolnosti donose
odluke o problemu nastalom u odredjenoj situaciji. Sudije moraju i kada
I o meni.
Mene zanima filozofija saha, odnosno psihologija u sahu.
sta dozivljavamo dok igramo i dok razmisljamo o njemu.
desila.
Sretnem ti ja jednu devojku. Sahistkinja. Igrala za drugi klub.
Di si, kako si i tako to. Na kraju je zapitam dali igra sah.
Ne igram - kaze ona.
Zasto?

slovom, a crne malim.

Ja volim šah i dosta ga igram.
Beli: Kb6, Pc7
Crni: Ka1, Td6
Beli vuče i dobija.

IBM-ovim "Deep Blue" kompjuterom.
ostvario najpre zahvaljući promenama strategije u sred partije,
tokom partije.
U nastavku malo više detalja o prethodnim i predstojećem
Šta mislite, ko će pobediti?
A deeper shade of blue
After winning the opening game of last year's historic match,
Deep Blue lost the contest with two draws and three defeats.
Although capable of processing 240 million moves per second, Deep
Blue fell victim to Kasparov's signature ability to switch
strategy in mid-stream during the 1996 match.
Citing the match as one of the most difficult of his career,
Kasparov issued a rematch challenge for 1997, and IBM 's Deep
Blue team immediately accepted on Deep Blue's behalf. The rematch
promises to be a test for both Kasparov and Deep Blue's unique
capabilities.
Time Magazine's March 10 article, "Deeper in Thought" offers a
fascinating look at what both sides are thinking as the event
draws near.
Deep Blue's family history
1950
Investigation begins of the chess-playing problem... Claude
Shannon, the founder of information theory, stated in 1950 that
"the investigation of the chess-playing problem is intended to
develop techniques that can be used for more practical
applications." Shannon further argued that chess represents the
ideal hurdle for computer analysis: "The problem is sharply
defined, both in the allowed operations (the moves of chess) and
in the ultimate goal (checkmate). It is neither so simple as to
be trivial nor too difficult for satisfactory solution." Since
1950 the goal of hundreds of engineers, programmers, and
mathematicians has been to design computers and software strong
enough to overcome the ingenuity and imagination of the world's
Grandmaster chess players.
1988
Deep Thought is created
The predecessor of Deep Blue, called Deep Thought, was created in
1988 by a team of Carnegie-Mellon graduate students including
Feng-Hsiung Hsu and Murray Campbell. The basic version of Deep
Thought's chess engine contained 250 chips and two processors on
a single circuit board and was capable of analyzing 750,000
positions per second or 10 half moves ahead, for an international
performance rating of 2450, which placed it in the lower ranks of
the world's Grandmasters. Computers' rating points are determined
by a combination of both their speed and knowledge. That same
year, Deep Thought stunned the chess world, becoming the first
computer to defeat a Grandmaster in a tournament.
1989
Garry Kasparov beats Deep Thought
In October 1989, an experimental six-processor version of Deep
Thought, capable of searching more than two million positions per
second, played a two-game exhibition match against Garry
Kasparov, the reigning world champion, and was beaten.
1993 Deep Thought beats Judit Polgar In August 1993, Deep Thought
defeated Judit Polgar, the youngest Grandmaster in history and
the strongest female player in the world. In June 1994, the
computer again won the title of International Computer Chess
Champion.
1996
Deep Blue is even greater
The successor to Deep Thought, now entitled Deep Blue, was
designed to address many of the system limitations of Deep
Thought, specifically in the areas of calculation speed and
processing power. The research team aimed to design a machine
which would outcalculate Deep Thought by a factor of at least
1,000 and examine more than one billion moves per second.
Therefore, over a period of years, the team designed a
chess-specific processor chip that is capable of searching two to
three million positions per second. Secondly, the team joined
this special purpose hardware with IBM's RISC System/6000*
Scalable POWERparallel Systems* (SP) computer for a further
several hundred-fold gain over the original Deep Thought.
The Deep Blue computer is a 32-node IBM RS/6000 SP high
performance computer. Each node of the SP employs a single
microchannel card containing eight dedicated VLSI chess
processors, for a total of 256 processors working in tandem. Deep
Blue's programming code is developed in C and runs under the AIX
operating system. The net result is a scalable, highly parallel
system capable of calculating 50 to 100 billion moves within
three minutes, which is the time allotted to each player's move
in classical chess.
In order to give Deep Blue even greater resources from which to
draw, the Deep Blue team collected an opening game database which
provides the system with grandmaster games played over the last
100 years. Alongside the opening database is an endgame database
which is activated when only five chess pieces remain on the
board. This database provides billions of endgame scenarios.
1996
Kasparov plays Deep Blue
Kasparov met Deep Blue for the first time in Febrary, 1996 at the
ACM Chess Challenge in Pennsylvania. Deep Blue shocked the world
by taking the first game, and although Kasparov went on to win
the match with three wins and two draws, he described the game as
one of the most difficult of his career. At the conclusion of the
event, Kasparov's offer of a rematch was immediately accepted by
IBM.
1997
Deep Blue goes deeper
Taking cues from last year's match, researchers have spent the
last year improving the way Deep Blue plays chess. With Deep Blue
well-tuned for this year's match, the world can anticipate an
exciting, and historic, event.

Problem tu je šta znači "najjači potez"? Najjači u smislu -
siguran, defanzivan, ili ofanzivan, napadački..? :)

minuta i nastavio...
Kompjuter je takođe igrao prilično nekonvencionalno i agresivno
Evo izveštaja sa lica mesta....
World champ takes 1-0 lead
NEW YORK, MAY 3, 1997 - In a wild game that featured
unconventional play and surprise moves, mostly by Deep Blue,
Garry Kasparov emerged victorious in his rematch with IBM's
supercomputer.
Feng-hsuing Hsu of the Deep Blue development team resigned
after 45 moves, three hours and forty seven minutes into Game
1. Kasparov rose from the table with a broad smile that
signaled relief.
"It was just a beginning," said a drained Kasparov, who
addressed spectators immediately after the game. "If we play
all the games in the same style, I'll have to survive,
because it takes a lot of energy." In sharp contrast to what
match analysts thought would be an aggressive effort from
Kasparov, the world champ began by playing passively, an
unconventional tactic for a champion known for his dynamic
play.
Kasparov, playing white, began with a Reti opening, an
unorthodox beginning for the world champion, but one that was
designed especially to counter Deep Blue's agressiveness. The
computer responded to Kasparov's first two moves
instantaneously, causing Garry to ponder his third move for
almost ten minutes. But after Deep Blue took a few minutes
itself to "think" about its third move.
Fritz, a computer chess simulator used by commentators Yasser
Seirawan, Maurice Ashley and Mike Valvo to evaluate the game,
showed that both players held slight advantages during the
game.
Toward the end of the game, the world champion began to sense
that victory was well within his grasp. His trademark
confidence visibly restored, Kasparov appeared relaxed as he
took his time during the endgame. Said commentator Maurice
Ashley in the waning moments of the match, "Kasparov knows
this game is over, but knowing Garry, he's probably thinking
about the most devious way to finish off his opponent." When
Kasparov picked up his watch from the table to signal
victory, the audience at the Equitable broke into applause.
"Deep Blue really took the battle to Garry," said Seirawan of
Deep Blue's agressive, attacking style of play. "It played an
agressive game and I have to give it to the Deep Blue
developers. Even though they lost, they've done an impressive
job of improving the computer since last year."
Concluded Deep Blue developer Murray Campbell, "we have some
work to do tonight.

Evo dodatne analize toka prve partije, uz konstataciju kako
A momentous day as Garry Kasparov took a 1-0 lead, yet even
in victory, the world champion counseled caution to the
capacity crowd that gave him a two-minute standing ovation
after the game.
"If we carry on in the same style, I will need a lot of
energy," he said. Although Kasparov said he "found some flaws
in Deep Blue," his opponent played some incredible moves that
shocked everyone present, except, it seems, Kasparov.
The game further reinforces the feeling in the chess world
that Kasparov is the '"last man standing," but he was not in
control throughout, and his worried expression at one point
betrayed the pressure he was under when Deep Blue launched a
violent if ultimately unsound attack.
In Game 2, Deep Blue plays white and moves first, which gives
the computer a much better chance of taking the game into the
kind of positions in which it excels.
The champ totally changed his style of play for this game and
kept his well analyzed openings in the locker in favor of
what could best be described as "anti-computer chess." The
key to surviving against the awesome calculating power of the
machine is to avoid tactics. To avoid tactics you have to
avoid contact with your opponent's pieces as much as
possible.
It is a measure of Kasparov's skill that he managed to win
the game without once moving any of his pieces into Deep
Blue's half of the board. He was scoring a succession of
field goals from his own half, while Deep Blue was
unsuccessfully looking for that elusive touchdown.
Deep Blue's key mistake was on move 22 when it was seduced by
the prospect of an attack but weakened the defense of its
king in the process. The attack intensified as Kasparov fell
into slight time pressure. But with typical resourcefulness,
he sacrificed rook for bishop and pawn to make his position
impregnable and reach an endgame where Deep Blue's plan of
action was hard to find.
Kasparov straightforwardly removed the obstacles to the
advance of his pawn duo and on move 45, the pawns could not
be stopped and the Deep Blue team tendered its resignation.
sah.54nenad,
Evo malo i događanja "iza scene" velikog meča. Zanimaju li vas
So what's Garry Kasparov going to do after winning Game 1
against Big Blue?
"We're going to party," said his technical advisor, Frederic
Friedel. But this is a chess champion and his entourage, so
the definition of "party" is a bit more sedate than the usual
Saturday night fare. "No, for us that means dinner, maybe
Japanese, talk about the game, and then Garry has to get some
sleep," says Friedel.
Fredel likened the match to Mike Tyson going 12 rounds with
Evander Holyfield, "and then he has to fight him again the
next day. Only Deep Blue isn't bruised and aching, he's as
good as new."
While Kasparov appeared exuberant in his post game comments,
he was anything but in the studio set where the match was
played. Not a word was said during the match. Kasparov's
associates could only read his face to get a sense of how he
was feeling.
"At one point I could see him thinking, 'Are you serious?'
when he was pleasantly surprised at one of Deep Blue's
moves," Fredel said.
Other times, he was angry with himself when he saw a better
move he could have made. "But," Fredel added, "He was saying
to himself, 'I musn't worry about it. On to the next one.' "
Kasparov has spent the last year revamping his game play with
the aid of computers. Fredel feels that their work with their
program,"Fritz," has greatly improved Kasparov's game. It
also sets up a fascinating dichotomy between the efforts of
the two sides. "They're using human in order to improve Deep
Blue's play," says Fredel, "while Garry is using computers to
improve his."
And here's some surprising news for dieters who don't always
have time to exercise: Kasparov's associates say he loses a
couple of pounds during the game. While he played, he munched
on chocolate and drank tea. But this was after a very light
lunch with his mother, who kept urging him to eat more.
Apparently when you're the greatest chess player in the
world, you don't have to listen to your mother.
sah.55nenad,
Kasparov and Deep Blue are playing on a set that looks like a
study, complete with bookshelves, a potted plant and duck
decoys. If Kasparov wants to do some reading, however, he's
not apt to find much of interest on the shelves. The books
are out of date New York and New Jersey law books...
Also, on the set is a special room where Kasparov can go rest
in between moves. It is equipped with a sofa, if he chooses
to lay down, but since the computer is so fast he doesn't
have much time to rest or even use the bathroom if he needs
to without costing time on the clock.
sah.56nenad,
Garry Kasparov and his team celebrated his victory over Deep
Blue in Game 1 with a lobster dinner at the Ocean Club in
midtown Manhattan. The group was there until around 11
o'clock when "Garry's mother sent us all home and to bed,"
said Kasparov's technical advisor, Frederic Friedel.
Of course, there was work to do. Before dinner they sat down
to analyze the day's events. Then, while the team slept,
their own computer chess program stayed up overnight to solve
several technical problems. Before breakfast this morning
(ham and cheese, yogurt and tea), Kasparov got the answers he
needed from the program and presumably let it get a
well-earned rest.
Kasparov then took advantage of the Sunday morning sunshine
with a walk in Central Park. Friedel said the mood in the
camp was much less tense than it was yesterday. "We are up a
point, and Garry learned several important things about Deep
Blue yesterday." Friedel felt that one key to the match
involved the passed pawns, whose importance Kasparov was able
to recognize using simple human judgement, an area where even
the most powerful computers are lacking.
Still, Friedel is a chronic worrier, and he saw in Deep Blue
a number of things that furrow his brow. "The problem is that
the machine can play in a style that should make it easy for
Garry to win, but it is still forcing him into difficult
calculations. That takes a lot of energy, and I don't know if
Garry can keep that up for six games."
Friedel also pointed out that a human opponent might have
walked away from the board yesterday psychologically
destroyed, "but Deep Blue doesn't know that it lost. It's
just sitting there saying, `Show me the board and let's go.'
sah.57nenad,

desiti...
In a strategic battle that contrasted sharply with Saturday's
aggressive, attacking style of play, Deep Blue defeated Garry
Kasparov in Sunday's Game 2 to even the six-game rematch at 1
- 1.
With a quick handshake, the world champion offered his
resignation to Deep Blue team member Feng-hsiung Hsu after an
exchange of queens in the 45th move. He quickly left the game
room. Game 2 lasted three hours and forty-four minutes.
"We really feel very good," said Deep Blue team leader C.J.
Tan, who joked that the Deep Blue team recovered from
Saturday's defeat by having "a couple of cocktails."
"This was a game any human grandmaster would have been proud
to play," said Deep Blue team consultant and grandmaster Joel
Benjamin. "This shows it's possible for a computer to play
real chess."
In comparison with Saturday's unconventional play, Deep Blue,
playing white, initiated Game 2 with the classic Ruy Lopez
opening, a strategy that requires great skill to pull off and
is difficult to counter.
That began a series of rapid moves by both players. After
only 25 minutes of chess, the players had completed 17 moves
apiece. But after Kasparov's 17th move, Deep Blue began to
"think," indicating the computer was now looking beyond its
pre-programmed moves.
As in the opening game, Kasparov frequently stood up from the
chessboard to retreat to his private meditation area just
off-stage. "That means that he's comfortable with the
position," commented Ashley. And as in Saturday's game,
Kasparov hurried back to the board after Deep Blue's
subsequent move.
Midway through the game, Deep Blue went on the attack. Two
hours after the first piece was moved, the computer initiated
a knight-for-knight exchange that altered the complexion of
the game and seemed to rattle Kasparov. Said Ashley, "You can
see the frown on Kasparov's face. He knows that he has to
hunker down and defend his pieces." At this point, chess
authorities in the audience at New York's Equitable Center
concluded the world champion began playing for a draw.
As the game neared conclusion, Kasparov became even more
animated, often shaking his head in disbelief after every
change of position. "Kasparov has been suffering throughout
this game," remarked guest commentator Patrick Wolff. "And
how often do you see Kasparov suffering when he's playing
chess?"
Deep Blue's Tan was delighted the computer prevailed, but was
cautious in victory. "It was very exciting," said Tan. "But
like I said before the match, it's going to be a long,
drawn-out battle."

sah.63nenad,
načinio i jednu grešku tokom partije... Nije pomoglo ni "srećno
odelo". :)
One of those things all kids seem to learn is how to draw a
face where, if you turn it one way, it's happy, but if you
flip it upside down it's sad. That was the Kasparov camp in
the first moments after the champion lost Game 2.
Frederic Friedel, Kasparov's technical advisor, was
devastated. "It's terrible," he said. "Garry was battered
very badly." What appeared to make the defeat worse was that
Kasparov seemed to make no glaring errors during the game.
"The computer just played a superb game," said Friedel.
But there was Kasparov's manager, Owen
Williams, with a grin that lit his face like a
jack-o-lantern. "Garry's not going to be happy," he
said. "But it's the best thing to happen to chess. It
will be front-page news: `The Computer Fights
Back!'"
Andrew Paige, of Club Kasparov, the champion's
web site, agreed. "We'll get two million (dollars) for
the rematch next year," he said in a vain effort to
console Friedel.
Kasparov entered the match wearing the same suit
he wore yesterday. "It's his lucky suit. He wore it
back in '95 when he defeated (Vishy) Anand" to
defend his world championship, said another of
Kasparov's aides.
Kasparov doesn't always rely on luck to gain his
advantage. His aides note that physical
conditioning is integral to maintaining a mental
edge. Kasparov gets most of his exercise
swimming and lifting weights. "He is built like a bull,
which gives him an advantage over his human
opponents," said Friedel, "especially those
grandmasters I see smoking and walking around
with glasses of Jack Daniels in their hands."
The champion also runs, and he had to do a bit of
it Sunday morning on his jaunt in Central Park
when he and his aides were nearly run over by
joggers when they accidentally wandered into the
middle of a road race.
sah.64nenad,
Neke zanimljivosti vezane za događaje oko meča... Jeste li znali

- Before he begins play, Kasparov takes all the pieces of the
board and resets them, a habit one of his aides likened to a
violinist practicing his scales just before performing. He
likes to arrange the knights so they face the middle of the
board...
- Speaking of superstitions, Kasparov believes the number 13 is
his lucky number. He was born on the 13th day of the month, and
he is the 13th world champion...
- The press room waiter, who before Game 1 predicted a Kasparov
win, said prior to Sunday's match he thought the champion would
be tired and therefore would lose. That makes him 2-0 as a
handicapper. Let's see what he says Tuesday.

napad...
It's 1-1 and computer chess skeptics must surely be in the
last stages of denial. Sunday we witnessed a game of chess
played with such control and assurance it could have been
played by a top-flight grandmaster. Indeed, many in the
auditorium at the Equitable Center thought Deep Blue's
maneuvering worthy of Garry's longtime rival, Anatoly Karpov.
Deep Blue team chess expert, Grandmaster Joel Benjamin,
summed it up: "This was real chess. This was a game any human
grandmaster would have been proud of."
What really impressed the top players in the press room was
Deep Blue's patience in a blocked position, supposedly the
type of position in which it should have been uncomfortable.
The Deep Blue team knew better: "I knew Deep Blue would have
to play all kinds of positions. I made it play closed
positions, said Benjamin. "I ultimately had faith in Deep
Blue playing that kind of position, and I was right to have
faith."
Kasparov was tormented by a chess opening known as the Ruy
Lopez, but in view of the immensely difficult situations that
can cause, it also is known by chess players as the "Spanish
Torture."
Deep Blue team member Murray Campbell revealed afterwards
that the computer did not pinpoint any particular mistake
that Kasparov made. But it slowly increased its advantage,
despite playing a couple of moves that had the experts
frowning. The star move was Deep Blue's 37th, moving its
bishop to a central square from which it singlehandedly
blocked Kasparov in completely. The world champion was
totally shut out, unable to make a single aggressive gesture.
In a curious parallel of Game 1, it was Kasparov who had to
spend the last eight moves waiting for the worst, and like
Deep Blue, he had to resign on the 45th move.
The chief of the Deep Blue team, C.J. Tan, later reminded the
crowd of his words: "Its going to be a long drawn out match.

By his own admission, the pressure got to Garry Kasparov
today. It was the not the $300,000 difference between first
and second prize nor the massive media attention this match
has received. It was Deep Blue's astonishing play the world
champion could not come to terms with.
Kasparov was off-balance coming into this game, a man who,
for once in his career, had let his emotions overcome the
logical impulses of his own chess genius. Still smarting from
his reverse in the second game, Kasparov had lost his
objectivity and accepted his strategy has failed.
In a bizarre twist, Kasparov avoided his favorite opening
moves and started to play like his longtime human rival,
Anatoly Karpov, who loves to defend with an opening known as
the Caro-Kann. This was a clear sign things were not right,
but Deep Blue, naturally, did not notice and just played the
standard moves. As early as move seven, Kasparov made a clear
mistake allowing a sacrifice of a knight that is known to be
very strong. A quick check of the computer chess databases
showed that of the nine players who had allowed this
sacrifice, only one had survived and he needed a large slice
of luck.
With Deep Blue, luck does not come into it, and we witnessed
the shortest ever game between man and machine at the top
level. After just under an hour, Kasparov realized how
hopeless his position had become. We did not have to wait
long for the killer blow from Deep Blue that ended the game
after just 19 moves and win the match 3.5-2.5. The champion
issued a challenge at the post game press conference: " It's
time for Deep Blue to play real chess. I personally guarantee
I will tear it in pieces." Fighting talk, and I fervently
hope we will see Deep Blue participate in wider world of
chess.
What has changed in the machine that lost last year ? The
director of the IBM research team, C.J.Tan, explained: "
Three things were improved this time around; it's more
powerful, we added more chess knowledge and we developed a
program to change the parameters in between each game. "
Kasparov is still in shock, and was in his hotel room last
night studying printouts from the Deep Blue team that he
hopes will give him some insights into its wonderful play
that have entertained and will, in time, educate every chess
player

Završni komentar poslednje partije. :)
In a shocking finale that lasted barely more than an hour,
World Champion Garry Kasparov resigned 19 moves into Game 6,
handing a historic victory to Deep Blue.
The win gave the IBM supercomputer a 3.5-2.5 victory in the
six-game rematch. It was the first time a current world
champion has lost a match to a computer opponent under
tournament conditions.
"What we just witnessed was a landmark achievement in chess,"
said match commentator Yasser Seirawan. "All I can say is
that I'm stunned. I absolutely didn't expect this to happen."
Kasparov, who afterward admitted he was in a poor frame of
mind entering Game 6, fell into a well-known trap that has
been established as a bad line to follow. According to
commentators covering the match, it was almost inconceivable
that someone of Kasparov's ability could allow this to
happen.
It appeared that the pressure of the past five games had
taken its toll on Kasparov. His disastrous mistake early in
the game was certainly uncharacteristic of a man generally
considered to be the greatest player in the history, and
Kasparov's early resignation was a sign that he'd lost his
will to fight. "For me, the match was over yesterday," he
said. "I had no real strength left to fight. And today's win
by Deep Blue was justified."
Game 6 began with a very quiet, positional-based opening, the
Caro-Kann. Unlike in four of the previous five games,
Kasparov, playing black, began with a "real" opening ľ one
that wasn't specifically improvised to throw off Deep Blue --
but he then developed it into a losing variation.
Based on this beginning, the commentators predicted a
strategic battle. Said Seirawan, "This is also a very solid
set up for black."
That forecast quickly went out the window after Kasparov's
seventh move, when Deep Blue sacrificed a knight for a pawn,
costing Kasparov the ability to castle. At this point,
Kasparov's disposition changed dramatically. "Kasparov has a
look of terror on his face," said Seirawan. "He's showing his
disbelief by falling for a well-known opening trap." The
error provided Deep Blue with a highly advantageous position
and marked the beginning of the end for Kasparov.
After the game, Deep Blue development team leader C.J. Tan
expressed satisfaction with the result. He also pointed out
that there was more to Deep Blue's battle with Garry Kasparov
than just a game of chess. "We are very proud to have played
a role in this historic event," he said. "This will benefit
everyone -- from the audience to school children, to
businesses everywhere, even to Garry Kasparov."
Kasparov, who on several occasions expressed unhappiness with
the ground rules of the six-game rematch, challenged Deep
Blue to a showdown under regular tournament conditions. "The
match was lost by the world champion," he said, "but there
are very good and very profound reasons for this. I think the
competition has just started. This is just the beginning."
The Deep Blue development team took home the $700,000 first
prize, while Kasparov received $400,000.

Fans still stand by Kasparov
To many of the young people in the audience
watching the last game of the Kasparov-Deep Blue
rematch, the world champion had accomplished
the impossible. He had managed to win one game
against the best inanimate chess player in the
world, and had held off the machine three other
times. But the last game proved too daunting for a
mere human -- an exhausted, discouraged
Kasparov resigned after just 19 moves, and in
many eyes, became a fallen hero.
"I'm stunned," said Josh Waitzkin, 20, an
International Master who has played against
Kasparov. "He went into a position that is known to
be really, really bad for black. (Kasparov played
black in Sunday's game.) He made a terrible
blunder, which I can't believe."
Jamie Rosen, 26, and his sister Vanessa, 23, of
New York city arrived at the Equitable Center in
Manhattan two hours before the game without
tickets. Scalpers were hawking them for $75 a
piece, but the two managed to get tickets at the
last minute at face value -- $25 each. They were
stunned by Kasparov's sudden loss, but
considered the experience well worth the money
they paid. "I was really sad," said Jamie Rosen.
"He sort of went out with a whimper. But it was an
amazing event. I am fascinated by Kasparov."
Jennifer Casinelli, 9, is on a chess team at
school in White Plains, N.Y. and came to
watch the game Sunday, hoping she would
learn something. She learned that even the best
sometimes have to lose. "I was pretty surprised,
and kind of disappointed," she said. "I guess I'll
just go home and look over the game."
Susan Polgar, the reigning women's world
champion chess player, took the opportunity to
advance her own cause. She handed out fliers
advertising her official request to be Deep Blue's
next human opponent. She promised to "defend
the female race and show that a woman can face
the brilliant men behind the machine!!!" But Heath
Marell, 17, president of the chess club at White
Plains High School, was still willing to give
Kasparov another chance. "Everyone makes
mistakes," he said. "Kasparov is the best. That
hasn't changed."

Kako je kompjuter donesen na "lice mesta"...
Deep Blue pulls into the Big Apple
The Deep Blue computer arrived at the Equitable Center in
Manhattan in style for its historic rematch with World Chess
Champion Garry Kasparov. Housed inside four 7-foot high
moving crates and strapped down to the inside of a 16-wheel
semi truck, a new-and-improved Deep Blue made its first ever
appearance in New York City a memorable one.
The computer's arrival was marked with considerable fanfare.
Camera crews from three major television networks recorded
all of the action, while curious spectators gathered outside
of the Equitable to get a firsthand look at the best
chess-playing computer in the world. Despite all of the
attention, the Deep Blue remained unfazed throughout the
hour-long ordeal.
The process of moving Deep Blue from its home at IBM's Thomas
J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, to
the Equitable building in Manhattan began late Friday
afternoon. After completing their work for the day, the
members of the Deep Blue development team shut down the
computer to prepare it for the move. Forty-five minutes
later, the computer was crated and ready for its trip to New
York City ľ an amazing accomplishment considering Deep Blue's
enormous size and complex hardware design.
The SP itself filled two specially constructed 7' by 4' by 5'
wooden crates, while the computer's covers and doors were
packed inside two identical containers. All four crates were
then loaded into a 16-wheeler for the 50-minute trip
downstate to the Equitable Center in midtown Manhattan.
Relocating a computer of this magnitude -- it stands 6'5''
and weighs in at 2,800 pounds -- requires a considerable
measure of planning and a healthy dose of manpower. In
addition to the special IBM logistics specialists, four
professional movers were employed to make sure that all went
according to plan.
But planning sometimes cannot account for all of the
variables of an operation as complex as this. When the truck
containing Deep Blue arrived at the Equitable, it was
discovered that the building could not accommodate a vehicle
of this size.
The IBM moving team immediately sprang into action. A
smaller, six-wheel moving truck was procured to meet the
Equitable's specifications, Deep Blue was transferred from
the 16-wheel semi to the six-wheel truck, and the problem was
solved.
Said an IBM official coordinating the move, "Since the crates
that the SP ships in cannot fit inside a normal truck that
goes inside the elevator, we're transferring the crates by
backing the semi up to the smaller truck, then moving them
across and uncrating them so we can get them down into the
building." The plan was executed to perfection and Deep Blue
was safely moved into its temporary new home at the
Equitable.
IBM officials said that Deep Blue would be up and running by
noon on Monday at the latest, but hoped that it would be
ready to go even earlier. "We've allocated all day [Sunday]
to set up the SP. That's typical when you move hardware, to
have a one-day set-up time. You may have to spend some time
debugging things in order to get it going."

Interview with Yasser Seirawan
Yasser Seirawan, one of three commentators for the
Kasparov-Deep Blue rematch (along with Michael Valvo and
Maurice Ashley), is an International Grandmaster and
three-time U.S. Champion. He spoke with our reporter
following Game 4.
How do you think this year's match differs from last year's
match in Philadelphia?
It differs on many different fronts, and yet, history seems
to be repeating itself because we have an identical score and
identical results from the first match. But there are lots of
differences too. I think we see a smarter Deep Blue this
year. This match is a greater test for Garry and he's taking
it much more seriously this time. Garry is having more of a
struggle than he had in the first one. In a way, he almost
seems to be imploding. He's worried about why the computer
played so well in Game 2 and his confidence has been shaken.
We certainly noticed his concern about the computer's
capabilities during the press conference after Game 3.
Wow! When he stomped off that stage, he left a vacuum behind.
I was on the 49th floor watching and I could even feel that
vacuum! I mean the pleasantries that they exchanged before
the game, the great admiration and mutual respect both sides
exhibited for each other all kind of got put aside as Garry
said some very sharp things. I think that C.J. Tan did a good
job of deflecting when he invited Kasparov back to IBM to
continue the experiment after the match. I though that C.J.
was very diplomatic, and he did his best to mollify Garry.
Kasparov has chosen to play with a more passive strategy
against Deep Blue than he normally uses in tournaments. As a
grandmaster, would you choose the same strategy against Deep
Blue?
No. Stylistically, Garry matches up very, very badly against
Deep Blue. To use a boxing analogy, Deep Blue has two very
powerful weapons, and he's a big, big bully. When Joe Frazier
met George Foreman, Frazier was tailor-made for Foreman.
George was a big puncher, and Frazier came in head first. Bad
news! Garry Kasparov is a big puncher, he's a very big
puncher. He's an awesome attacker and he's an awesome
tactician. But Deep Blue has exactly the same strengths. In
an exchange of blows, he could knock out the computer as just
easily as he himself could be knocked out. So he has to say
"Well, I've got to become a little more skilled as a boxer,
I've got to become more of a counter-puncher, I've got to bob
and weave, and I've got to run." But Garry doesn't run from
anybody. He is the ultimate intimidating force on the
chessboard. So in this match he's suddenly on his bicycle
running around the ring, making little moves, toying over
here, toying over there. Well guess what? There are a lot of
boxers in the chess world who do exactly that. They're not
going to knock you out. But they're going to score on a lot
of little jabs, they're going to win a decision, and they're
perfectly happy campers... The greatest positional players in
the world, including Anatoly Karpov and Ulf Anderson, would
box the ears off Deep Blue.
Have Deep Blue's abilities been specifically tailored to
cancel out Garry's strengths?
No. Virtually all computers think alike, just as all planes
fly alike. There's not that big of a difference. The
development team can polish it here and there on the opening,
add a little bit of sophistication in the endgame, and so on.
They're making facets better, but under the hood it's still
this raw, calculating ability that's going on.
Who's going to win the match?
Garry is. The difference is still far too great. Garry has
some emotional problems at the moment that he must temper,
but he'll keep his cool. He's great and he knows so much
about chess. He made some great adjustments after three
games, and I feel that he's seen enough about the computer to
realize what he has to do. If Deep Blue were to tie the
match, I would be shocked. In my wildest dreams I can't see
Deep Blue winning. But then again, I have pretty wild dreams.
sah.80nenad,
Big Blue says no to Kasparov's request for a 10-round rematch
this October against Deep Blue. Part of the Kasparov proposal was
for Deep Blue to play many other players so Kasparov could study
the games and at the 10-round rematch, Kasparov wanted much more
time between games for "study purposes". Kasparov also wanted
some other entity to put up the prize money. Big Blue said no
rematch. If Mr. Kasparov wants to play Deep Blue again he'll have
to wait until next year!
