Can
Formed in Cologne, Germany and originally known as Inner Space,
this experimental unit was founded by two students of modern
classical music, Irmin Schmidt (b. 29 May 1937, Berlin,
Germany; keyboards) and Holger Czukay (b. 24 March 1938,
Danzig, Germany; bass). The group embraced a rock-based
perspective with the addition of Michael Karoli (b. 29 April
1948, Straubing, Lower Bavaria, Germany; guitar), Jaki
Liebezeit (b. 26 May 1938, Dresden, Germany; drums) and the
inclusion in this early line-up of David Johnson (flute).
The arrival of black American vocalist Malcolm Mooney coincided
with the adoption of a new name, Can. Johnson left the group in
December 1968 as the unit began work on their official debut
album. MONSTER MOVIE introduced many of Can's subsequent
trademarks: Schmidt's choppy, percussive keyboard style,
Karoli's incisive guitar and the relentless, hypnotic pulse of
its rhythm section. At times reminiscent of a Teutonic Velvet
Underground, the set's highlight was the propulsive You Doo
Right, a 20-minute excerpt from a 12-hour improvisatory
session. The group completed several other masters, later to
appear on SOUNDTRACKS and DELAY 1968, prior to the departure of
Mooney. He was replaced by Kenji Damo Suzuki (b. 16 January
1950, Japan), whom Liebezeit and Czukay had discovered busking
outside a Munich cafe. TAGO MAGO, a sprawling, experimental
double set, then followed, the highlight of which was the
compulsive Hallelujah. However, despite retaining a penchant
for extended compositions, Can also began exploring a more
precise, even ambient direction on EGE BAMYASI and FUTURE DAYS.
Suzuki left the group in 1973, and although they flirted with
other featured vocalists, Can remained a quartet for some time.
In 1976 the group scored an unlikely UK Top 30 hit with I Want
More, a song written by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, who
also guested on several tracks from the attendant album, FLOW
MOTION. Can was later augmented by two former members of
Traffic, Rosko Gee (bass) and Reebop Kwaku Baah (percussion),
but the departure of Czukay signalled their demise. The group
completed OUT OF REACH without him, but the bassist returned to
edit their next release, CAN. These largely disappointing
releases made little impact and the unit split up at the end of
1978.
Holger Czukay then pursued a successful solo career with a
series of excellent solo albums and fruitful partnerships with
David Sylvian and the Eurythmics. Irmin Schmidt completed
several film soundtracks, Jaki Liebezeit formed his own group,
the Phantom Band, and worked with systems musician Michael
Rother, while Karoli recorded an excellent solo set. The four
musicians remained in close contact and a reformed Can,
complete with Malcolm Mooney, returned to the studio in 1987.
The fruits of their renewed relationship appeared two years
later in the shape of the excellent RITE TIME.

Chrome
Formed in San Francisco in 1976, Chrome were one of the
earliest and most influential American new wave/punk bands.
Their first recording line-up featured John L. Cyborg (b. John
Lambdin; vocals/guitar/bass), Gary Spain (vocals/guitar/bass),
Mike Low (guitar/synthesiser/bass) and Damon Edge
(guitar/synthesiser/drums). Only Cyborg had any previous
experience worth noting, having played with the Flower
Travellin' Band. This line-up recorded 1976's THE VISITATION
for Siren. Low then departed and was replaced by Helios Creed.
The band proceeded to record ALIEN SOUNDTRACKS as background
music for live sex shows. 1978 saw their final original album
for Siren before switching to Ralph (home of the Residents).
Those three Siren albums are often regarded as a trilogy, all
dealing with the theme of machines taking over from man. They
had also seen a progression from guitar-based rock to
synthesizer and taped experimental pieces. In the early '80s
the band more or less dissolved. Edge and Creed recruited new
players and signed a deal with Don't Fall Off The Mountain
Records. The new boys were John and Hilary Stench from Remeo
Void and Vital Parts respectively. They had also played
together in Pearl Harbor And The Explosions. After THIRD FROM
THE SUN, the band switched labels almost sequentially. The
archive release of the CHROME BOX set includes four of their
old albums, plus new recordings CHRONICLES 1 + 2, while NO
HUMANS ALLOWED compiled their Siren material including deleted
singles and EPs. Helios Creed regularly turns out solo
metal/grunge albums on Amphetamine Reptile, and many other
former members are still active in a variety of bands.
Damon Edge died in November 1995.

Dead Can Dance
Based in London, England, but tracing their origins to
Australia, Dead Can Dance's long campaign in the music industry
has rarely attracted attention outside of a devoted following.
Whether this is a result of wilful obscurism or a disciplined
artistic vision is a moot point, but the band have now left
behind more than a decade's worth of, by turns infuriating and
blissful, avant garde pop. Their name had the unfortunate
affect of nailing their colours to the Gothic masthead, though
in truth they were light years away from this genre. The
moniker, did, however, have a purpose, and expressed the band's
desire to: `release dormant energy, the dynamic principle of
the music itself _ a drum is a reservoir of potential energy
which you can release by virtue of the diaphragm into
soundwaves, into moving particles. It's that creative act which
`dead can dance' describes.' The band's debut collection was
not as focused as later efforts, mingling their trademark
male/female vocals with an unco-ordinated mesh of chants and
drawling guitar. However, from packaging to production it
fitted the 4AD Records aesthetic perfectly, and there were
enough hints of the less prosaic gems to come to distinguish
the band. Reduced to the core duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa
Gerrard, SPLEEN AND IDEAL was an altogether more thrilling and
cohesive record, with the discordant guitar barrage abandoned
in favour of a considered array of instruments, including
cello, trombones and tympani. The pristine production also
leant the improved material greater clarity, though what the
songs actually concerned was, typically, something for
listeners to decide for themselves. WITHIN THE REALM OF A DYING
SUN gave further indication of their talent, though some
critics balked at the idea of giving the two singers one side
each of the record, making its tone uneven. It also revealed a
debt to music from the Middle East, a process which was further
explored by the less satisfying THE SERPENT'S EGG. AION took as
its premise medieval or `early music', using Gregorian chants,
similar in many ways to the work of Bel Canto, and baroque
stylistics, played with genuine folk instruments (hurdy gurdy,
bagpipes, etc.) INTO THE LABYRINTH confirmed Perry's greater
awareness of electronics and samplers, and while TOWARD THE
WITHIN is a live album, it primarily contains a phenomenal live
repertoire never before committed to vinyl. By 1995 Perry was
stated to be working on his first solo album, while Gerrard's
stunning vocal presence had seen her recruited to record in an
orchestral context.

Killing Joke
Immensely powerful UK post-punk band who combined a furious
rhythm section with near psychotic performances from Jaz
Coleman (b. Jeremy Coleman, Cheltenham, England;
vocals/keyboards). The band came about when Coleman, of
Egyptian descent, was introduced to Paul Ferguson, then
drumming for the Matt Stagger Band. Coleman joined as a
keyboard player, before they both quit to form their own group.
This first incarnation added 'Geordie' (b. K. Walker,
Newcastle, England; guitar) and Youth (b. Martin Glover Youth,
27 December 1960, Africa; bass), who had made his first public
appearance at the Vortex in 1977 with forgotten punk band the
Rage. After re-locating to Notting Hill Gate they paid for a
rehearsal studio and borrowed money from Coleman's girlfriend
to release the TURN TO RED EP. Picked up by DJ John Peel, the
band provided a session which would become the most frequently
requested of the thousands he has commissioned. Via Island
Record the band were able to set up their own Malicious Damage
label, on which they released Wardance in February 1980,
notable for its remarkably savage b-side, Psyche. A succession
of fine, aggressive singles followed, alongside live
appearances with Joy Division. They were in a strong enough
position to negotiate a three album deal with EG, which allowed
them to keep the name Malicious Damage for their records. After
the release of a typically harsh debut album, the band were
banned from a Glasgow gig when council officials took exception
to posters depicting Pope Pius giving his blessing to two
columns of Hitler's Brown Shirts (a genuine photograph). It was
typical of the black humour which pervaded the band, especially
on their record sleeves and graphics. After the recording of
the third album was completed the band would disintegrate when
Coleman's fascination with the occult led him to the conclusion
that apocalypse was imminent, and he fled to Iceland. He was
followed later by Youth. When Youth returned it was to begin
work with Ferguson on a new project, Brilliant. However, having
second thoughts Ferguson became the third Joker to flee to
Iceland taking bass player Paul Raven (ex-Neon Hearts) with
him. Brilliant continued with Youth as the only original
member. The Killing Joke output from then on lacks something of
the menace which had made them so vital. However, NIGHT TIME
combined commercial elements better than most, proffering the
hit single Love Like Blood. While OUTSIDE THE GATE was
basically a Coleman solo album wrongly credited to the band,
they returned with their best album for years with 1990's
EXTREMITIES, DIRT AND VARIOUS REPRESSED EMOTIONS, which saw the
drumming debut of Martin Atkins (ex-PiL). Regardless, the band
broke up once more with bitter acrimony flying across the pages
of the press the same year. While his former co-conspirators
pronounced Killing Joke dead, Coleman pledged to continue under
the name. He did just that after a brief sojourn into
classical/ethnic music via a collaborative project with Anne
Dudley. PANDEMONIUM saw Youth return to join Geordie and
Coleman, with the addition of new drummer Geoff Dugmore. This
saw a revitalized Killing Joke, notably on Exorcism, recorded
in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid in Cairo. They were
welcomed back by a wide cross-section of critics (at least
those who Coleman hadn't physically assaulted at some point)
and friends. Indeed, bands claiming Killing Joke as a direct
influence ranged from the Cult, Ministry and Skinny Puppy to
Metallica and Soundgarden, while many noticed an uncanny
similarity between the band's Eighties and Nirvana's Come As
You Are.

The Birthday Party
One of the most creative and inspiring `alternative' acts of
the '80s, this Australian outfit had its roots in the new wave
band Boys Next Door. After one album, the band relocated to
London and switched names. In addition to featuring the
embryonic genius of Nick Cave (vocals), their ranks were
swelled by Roland S. Howard (ex-Obsessions, Young Charlatans;
guitar), Mick Harvey (guitar, drums, organ, piano), Tracy Pew
(bass) and Phil Calvert (drums). They chose the newly launched
4AD offshoot of Beggars Banquet as their new home, and made
their debut with the impressive Fiend Catcher. Music critics
and BBC disc jockey John Peel became early and long-serving
converts to the band's intense post-punk surges. Back in
Australia, they recorded their first album, a transitional
piece which nevertheless captured some fine aggressive rock
statements. Their finest recording, however, was Release The
Bats. John Peel elected it the best record of 1981, though its
subject matter unwittingly tied the band in with the emerging
Gothic subculture populated by Bauhaus and Sex Gang Children.
As Pew was imprisoned for three months for drink-driving
offences, Barry Adamson (ex- Magazine), Roland Howard's brother
Harry and Chris Walsh helped out on the recording of the
follow-up, and the band's increasingly torrid live shows. After
collaborating with the Go-Betweens on the one-off single After
The Fireworks as the Tuf Monks, they shifted to Berlin to
escape the constant exposure and expectations of them in the
UK. Calvert was dropped (moving on to Psychedelic Furs), while
the four remaining members moved on to collaborative projects
with Lydia Lunch and Einsturzende Neubaten amongst others. They
had already recorded a joint 12-inch, Drunk On The Pope's
Blood, with Lunch, and Howard featured on much of her future
output. When Harvey left in the summer of 1983, the band seemed
set to fulfil their solo careers, even though he was
temporarily replaced on drums by Des Heffner. However, after a
final gig in Melbourne, Australia in June the band called it a
day. Howard went on to join Crime And The City Solution
alongside his brother and Harvey, who also continued in Cave's
solo band the Bad Seeds.

Joy Division
Originally known as Warsaw, this Manchester post-punk outfit
comprised of Ian Curtis (b. July 1956, Macclesfield, Cheshire,
England, d. 18 May 1980; vocals), Bernard Dicken/Albrecht (b. 4
January 1956, Salford, Manchester, England; guitar/vocals),
Peter Hook (b. 13 February 1956, Manchester, England; bass) and
Steven Morris (b. 28 October 1957, Macclesfield, Cheshire,
England; drums). Borrowing their name from the prostitution
wing of a concentration camp, Joy Division emerged in 1978 as
one of the most important groups of their era. After recording
a regionally available EP, AN IDEAL FOR LIVING, they were
signed to Manchester's recently formed Factory Records and
placed in the hands of producer Martin Hannett. Their debut
UNKNOWN PLEASURES, was a raw, intense affair, with Curtis at
his most manically arresting in the insistent She's Lost
Control. With its stark, black cover, the album captured the
group still coming to terms with the recording process, but
displaying a vision that was piercing in its clinical evocation
of an unsettling disorder. With Steven Morris's drums employed
as a lead instrument, backed by the leaden but compulsive bass
lines of Hook, the sound of Joy Division was distinctive and
disturbing. By the time of their single Transmission the
quartet had already established a strong cult following, which
increased after each gig. Much of the attention centred on the
charismatic Curtis, who was renowned for his neurotic
choreography, like a demented marionette on wires. By the
autumn of 1979, however, Curtis's performances were drawing
attention for a more serious reason. On more than one occasion
he suffered an epileptic seizure and blackouts onstage, the
illness seemed to worsen with the group's increasingly
demanding live schedule. On 18 May 1980, the eve of Joy
Division's proposed visit to America, Ian Curtis was found
hanged. The verdict was suicide. A note was allegedly found
bearing the words: `At this moment I wish I were dead. I just
can't cope anymore'.
The full impact of the tragedy was underlined shortly
afterwards, for it quickly became evident that Curtis had taken
his life at the peak of his creativity. While it seemed
inevitable that the group's posthumously released work would
receive a sympathetic reaction, few could have anticipated the
quality of the material that emerged in 1980. The single, Love
Will Tear Us Apart was probably the finest of the year, a
haunting account of a fragmented relationship, sung by Curtis
in a voice that few realized he possessed. The attendant album,
CLOSER, was faultless, displaying the group at their creative
peak. With spine-tingling cameos such as Isolation and the
extraordinary Twenty-Four Hours the album eloquently
articulated a sense of despair, yet simultaneously offered a
therapeutic release. Instrumentally, the work showed maturity
in every area and is deservedly regarded by many critics as the
most brilliant rock album of the '80s. The following year, a
double album, STILL collected the remainder of the group's
material, most of it in primitive form. Within months of the
Ian Curtis tragedy, the remaining members sought a fresh start
as New Order.

Laibach
With origins in Trbovlje, Slovenia, Northern Yugoslavia,
Laibach's powerful imagery has long been confused with the
fascist icons they have tried to deconstruct. They were formed
in 1980 by members of the Yugoslavian army, including Tomaz
Hostnik (b. 1961, d. 1982; vocals) and Miran Mohar. They acted
as the musical arm of the political art movement NSK (Neue
Slowenische Kunst_New Slovian Art), conceived in 1980 and
formulated in 1984. Laibach form one of three sections of the
movement, the others being Irwin (painters) and Scipion Nasice
(theatre). Laibach themselves have a constantly fluctuating
line-up. However, the nucleus can be identified as Milan Frez,
Dejan Knez, Ervin Markosek and Ivan Novak, the latter acting as
spokesman. In 1982 they toured outside of their native country
for the first time, releasing their first UK single Boji in
1984. In the mid-80s they recorded Teutonic reworkings of rock
classics such as Sympathy For The Devil, and appeared on THE
SOUTH BANK SHOW. The 1987 release Life Is Life, later covered
by Opus, had the unfortunate effect of becoming an anthem for
neo-Nazi's. Other notable pursuits included the commissioning
of a soundtrack to MACBETH performed by the German theatre
company Deutsches Schauspielhaus. It was played live during
performances. In 1988 the band also covered the Beatles' LET IT
BE, bar the title track, in its entirity, in Wagnerian military
style. They also released the German-only single, 3 Oktober, to
celebrate reunification in 1990. Although they have achieved
some degree of prominence, any realistic study of Laibach
should focus on them as merely one component in a larger and
more important artistic movement.

Lydia Lunch
b. Lydia Koch, 1959, Rochester, New York, USA. The provocative
Lydia Lunch was a pivotal figure in New York's `no wave' scene
of the late '70s and has worked with an array of talent since
then. After spells with Teenage Jesus And The Jerks and Beirut
Slump (the latter were restricted to one US single, Try Me),
Lydia Lunch opted for the freedom of solo work with 1980's
acclaimed QUEEN OF SIAM on the Ze label. Her next project,
Eight-Eyed Spy, toyed with funk and R&B while retaining her
uncompromising vocal style and violent, experimental musical
approach. Then came 13 .13 on the Ruby label, which benefited
from a harder, more co-ordinated feel. In 1982 she shared a
12-inch EP with the Birthday Party on 4AD, THE AGONY IS THE
ECSTACY, revealing her increasing fascination with the baser
instincts of human nature. Members of the Birthday Party also
backed Lydia on Some Velvet Morning, while Einsturzende
Neubauten joined her for Thirsty. This marriage of the New York
and Berlin undergrounds was further demonstrated on Der
Karibische Western, on Zensor with Die Haut. Lunch continued
this collaborative stance in 1983, working with Danish band
Sort Sol. 1984's IN LIMBO, a mini-album for Cabaret Voltaire's
Doublevision label, re-introduced her to solo work, and she
soon founded Widowspeak Productions in 1985 as an outlet to
document her work, starting appropriately with the UNCENSORED
LYDIA LUNCH cassette. After a project with Michael Gira,
entitled HARD ROCK (a cassette on Ecstatic Peace), Lydia homed
in on New York pranksters Sonic Youth for the `Death Valley 69,
a grungy, menacing start for Blast First Records. A sinister
solo offering, THE DROWNING OF LADY HAMILTON, was followed by a
10-inch EP with No Trend, entitled HEART OF DARKNESS (1985).
The next release for Widowspeak was a limited edition box, THE
INTIMATE DIARIES OF THE SEXUALLY INSANE, containing a cassette
of chronic case histories, a booklet and a book, ADULTERERS
ANONYMOUS, co-written by Lydia. 1987's remixed and remastered
double album retrospective, HYSTERIE, summarized her work from
1976-86, before she paired with the man behind Foetus and Clint
Ruin, Jim Thirlwell, for the awesome Stinkfist project, in
1989. That year also witnessed Harry Crews, an all-girl wall of
guitar sound for which Lunch was joined by Sonic Youth bassist,
Kim Gordon. Lunch, in conjunction with her soul-mate Thirlwell,
has become known as an avid opponent of censorship. Her own
work is uncomprisingly confrontational and base, and includes
videos featuring her administering oral sex. The politics of
outrage remain her gospel.

Velvet Underground
The antithesis of late-60s west coast love and peace, New
York's Velvet Underground portrayed a darker side to that era's
hedonism. Their pulsating drive married intellectual precision
and resulted in one of rock's most innovative and lasting
catalogues. Lou Reed (b. 2 March 1942, Freeport, Long Island,
New York, USA; guitar/vocal) and John Cale (b. 9 March 1940,
Crynant, West Glamorgan, Wales; viola/bass/organ) provided a
contrast in personality and approach which ensured the group's
early notoriety. Reed was a contract songwriter/performer at
Pickwick Records, responsible for a series of budget-priced
recordings issued under several names, the best-known of which
was the Primitives. Cale, a classically-trained child prodigy,
had secured a scholarship to study in America, but was drawn
into the group's nascent circle when he contributed a viola
passage to Reed's anti-dance composition, The Ostrich. A third
Primitive, Walter De Maria, was quickly replaced by Sterling
Morrison (b. 29 August 1942, East Meadow, Long Island, New
York, USA, d. 30 August 1995, Poughkeepsie, New York, USA;
guitar), who had studied creative writing with Reed at Syracuse
University. The reshaped unit was completed by drummer Angus
MacLise who suggested they adopt the name Velvet Underground,
the title of a contemporary pulp paperback. MacLise was also
instrumental in securing the group's first gigs at multi-media
events and happenings, but left when the Velvets began
accepting fees. He was replaced by Maureen `Mo' Tucker (b.
1945, New Jersey, USA), sister to a friend of Sterling
Morrison. The group met pop-art celebrity Andy Warhol in 1965
following an appearance at the Cafe Bizarre. He invited them to
join the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a theatrical mixture of
music, films, light-shows and dancing, and also suggested
adding actress/singer Nico (Christa Paffgen, b. 16 October
1938, Cologne, Germany, d. 18 July 198 ) to the Velvets's
line-up. The group recorded their debut album in the spring of
1966 but the completed master was rejected by several major
companies, fearful of both its controversial content and
lengthy tracks. THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO was eventually
issued by MGM/Verve the following year. Infamous for Warhol's
prominent involvement _ he designed the distinctive peel-off
banana screenprint featured on its sleeve and is credited as
producer _ this powerful collection introduced Reed's decidedly
urban infatuations, a fascination for street culture and
amorality bordering on voyeurism. Reed's talent, however, was
greater than mere opportunism. His finely-honed understanding
of R&B enhanced a graphic lyricism whereby songs about drugs
(I'm Waiting For The Man/Heroin), sado-masochism (Venus In
Furs) or sublimation (I'll Be Your Mirror) were not only
memorable for their subjects, but also as vibrant pop
compositions. Such skills were intensified by Cale's haunting,
graphic viola work, Nico's gothic intonation and the group's
combined sense of dynamism which blended Tucker's relentless
pulse with some of rock's most inspired sonic experimentation.
Now rightly regarded as a musical milestone, THE VELVET
UNDERGROUND AND NICO was generally reviled on release.
Contemporary radio shunned its stark ugliness and subject
matter, while the disparate counter-cultures of Los Angeles and
San Francisco abhorred the dank underbelly this uncompromising
group posed to challenge their floral dreams. Nico left for a
solo career in 1967 and the remaining quartet then parted from
Warhol's patronage. Sessions for a second album, WHITE
LIGHT/WHITE HEAT, exacerbated other internal conflicts and its
six compositions were marked by a raging intensity. While the
title track and the relentless I Heard Her Call My Name
suggested an affinity to I'm Waiting For The Man, two extended
pieces, The Gift and Sister Ray, caught the group at its most
radical. The latter performance, a grinding, remorseless,
sexual cacophony, was recorded live in the studio at maximum
volume, and although Reed later suggested he was trying to
approximate the free-jazz of Ornette Coleman, this 17-minute
tour de force offers some of John Cale's most inspired atonal
instrumental work. This pivotal figure was then removed from
the group and replaced by an orthodox bassist, former Grass
Menagerie member, Doug Yule. A third album, entitled simply THE
VELVET UNDERGROUND, unveiled a pastoral approach, gentler and
more subtle, retaining the chilling, disquieting aura of
previous releases. Now firmly within Reed's grasp, the quartet
were implicit rather than direct, although moments of their
previous fury were apparent on several interludes. LOADED, an
album of considerable commercial promise, emphasized their
newfound perspective. Released in 1970, this unfettered
collection contained one of Reed's most popular compositions,
Sweet Jane, and in celebrating pop's rich heritage, offered an
optimism rarely heard in previous work. Paradoxically, by the
time LOADED was issued, Lou Reed had abandoned the group he had
created and Doug Yule, who had encouraged the commercial aspect
of the album, now took control, leading several variations on
the Velvet Underground name. A poorly-received album, SQUEEZE,
confirmed that the definitive unit ended with Reed's departure,
so much so that the album is not generally perceived to be part
of the Velvet's discography. Despite the tribulations endured
during its brief lifespan, the Velvets have since become one of
rock's most influential groups, particularly during the '80s
when a new generation of performers, from Joy Division to Jesus
And Mary Chain, declared their indebtedness. A series of
archive releases, including 1969 _ THE VELVET UNDERGROUND LIVE,
VUand ANOTHER VIEW, add further fuel to the talent and insight
which lay within the Velvet Underground and enhance their
legendary status. A rumour, followed by an announcement in 1993
that the band (without Doug Yule) had reformed for a major
tour, was greeted with anxious excitment. The subsequent
performances delighted thousands of fans, with a vast
percentage barely born when the Velvets last performed.

Swans
Like many early '80s American bands determined to stretch the
boundaries of musical cacophony, the Swans were drawn to the
thriving New York underground that has also produced Jim
Thirlwell, Lydia Lunch and Sonic Youth over the years. Although
the band have endured numerous line-up changes, the Swans
always centred on singer Michael Gira and, later, Jarboe. After
a raucous debut EP in 1982, SPEAK, the band released the
influential FILTH on the German Zensor label, which attracted a
strong European audience. In 1984 they announced COP on their
own Kelvin 422 label, their first record to appear in the UK.
Although COP was awash with harsh guitars and awkward,
dirge-like sounds, it was easily more accessible than FILTH, as
was the subsequent EP, RAPING A SLAVE, in March 1985 (despite
the title). Time Is Money (Bastard) kicked off 1986 with a
typically uncompromising title, preceding GREED in February.
Themes of depravity, sex, death and the more sinister aspects
of human nature prevailed, also to be heard on HOLY MONEY and A
Screw later that year. 1987 saw the band move to Product Inc.
for a double album, CHILDREN OF THE GOD, although another less
official effort, PUBLIC CASTRATION IS A GOOD IDEA, also
surfaced that year. Most of 1987 was taken up with Jarboe's new
project, Skin, although there was a limited German-only Swans
release, REAL LOVE. Another double album, 1988's FEEL GOOD NOW,
emerged on the Rough Trade Records-distributed Love label.
Meanwhile, a sinister cover of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us
Apart climbed the indie charts in June, resulting in a deal
with MCA Records. Saved, the Swans' first single for the major
label in April 1989, revealed a definite shift towards
mainstream rock, further evident on THE BURNING WORLD: the
sombre, Wagnerian approach was still there, but the ingredients
were certainly more palatable. The band also seemed to have
worked out of their collective system their monstrous live
assaults on an audience, which were generally too painful and
horribly loud to be anything other than an exercise in
art-house shock tactic indulgence. August's Can't Find My Way
Home was far more melodic than earlier singles and it seemed
that Swans were on the brink of crossing to a much wider
audience. But for the next two years they concentrated on
reissues of early material on Gira's own Young God label. In
May 1991 the band issued WHITE LIGHT FROM THE MOUTH OF
INFINITY, which was both commercial and innovative,
illustrating the way in which Gira and companions could always
command the attention of those willing to experiment a little
in their listening tastes. In 1995 Gira released his first
book, The Consumer And Other Stories, through Henry Rollins'
21/3/61 publishing house, in tandem with the Swans' latest
recording venture; a relatively restrained and accessible
collection dubbed The Great Annihilator.

Siouxsie & The Banshees
Siouxsie Sioux (b. Susan Dallion, 27 May 1957, London, England)
was part of the notorious `Bromley contingent', including Steve
Severin (b. Steven Bailey, 25 September 1955), which followed
the Sex Pistols in their early days. Siouxsie had also taken
part in the 100 Club Punk Festival, singing an elongated
version of The Lord's Prayer with a group that included Sid
Vicious on drums. The fledgling singer also achieved some minor
fame after a verbal exchange with television presenter Bill
Grundy which unwittingly prompted the Sex Pistols' infamous
swearing match on the programme "Today". Within months of that
incident Siouxsie put together her backing group the Banshees,
featuring Pete Fenton (guitar), Steve Severin (bass) and Kenny
Morris (drums). Siouxsie flirted with Nazi imagery, highlighted
by black make-up and frequently exposed breasts. By mid-1977
Fenton was replaced by John McGeogh, and the group supported
Johnny Thunders And The Heartbreakers as well as recording a
session for the BBC disc jockey, John Peel. By 1978, the group
had signed to Polydor and released their first single, the
excellent Hong Kong Garden, which reached the UK Top 10. THE
SCREAM soon followed, produced by Steve Lillywhite. Less
commercial offerings followed with The Staircase (Mystery) and
Playground Twist, which was soon succeeded by JOIN HANDS.
During a promotion al tour, Morris and McKay abruptly left, to
be replaced by former
Slits drummer Budgie and temporary Banshee Robert Smith, on
leave from the Cure. Siouxsie's Germanic influences were
emphasized on the stark Mittageisen (Metal Postcard), which
barely scraped into the Top 50. Both Happy House and Christine
were more melodic offerings, which brought greater commercial
success.
After the success of KALEIDOSCOPE, the group embarked on a
world tour, including a concert behind the Iron Curtain.
Another Top 10 album JUJU was followed by some extra-curricular
activities. Siouxie and Budgie formed an occasion al offshoot
group, the Creatures, who enjoyed Top 10 success in their own
right, as well as recording an album. Smith and Severin also
recorded successfully together as the Glove. After the
string-accompanied A KISS IN THE DREAMHOUSE, the group
reconvened in the autumn of 1983 to play a concert for Italy's
Communist Party. A highly commercial version of the Beatles'
Dear Prudence provided the group with their biggest UK hit,
peaking at number 3. Early in 1984 the evocative Swimming
Horses maintained their hit profile, while further personnel
changes ensued with the enlistment of John Carruthers from
Clock DVA. He, in turn, was replaced by Jon Klein. Regular
albums during the mid-'80s showed that the group had
established a loyal cult following and could experiment freely
in the studio without a significant loss of commercial appeal.
Having already enjoyed success with a cover song, Siouxsie
tackled Bob Dylan's This Wheel's On Fire, which reached the UK
Top 20. An entire album of cover versions followed with the
interesting THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. A change of musical
direction with PEEP SHOW revealed the group as uncompromising
as ever. 1991 saw them back in the charts with the
dance-oriented Kiss Them For Me and SUPERSTITION. They continue
to play adventurous music, occasion ally tinged with forays
into more commercial territory.

Snakefinger
Snakefinger was an appellation adopted by British guitarist
Phil Lithman. A member of mid-60s' act Junior's Blues Band,
Lithman subsequently moved to San Francisco for a career as a
folk and blues singer, before returning to the UK in the early
'70s to join former colleague Martin Stone (guitar) in Chilli
Willi. The duo subsequently expanded this acoustic-based act
and, as Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers, became one of the
finest acts of the UK `pub rock' genre. The group split up in
1975, following which Lithman returned to California where he
re-established links with the arcane Residents. Although
Lithman became known as Snakefinger while with Chilli Willi,
his exceptional dexterity and skills were apparent on several
Residents' recordings, including their reconstructed rendition
of Satisfaction (1976) and the ambitious ESKIMO. The quartet
backed Snakefinger on his debut single, The Spot (1978) and
over the ensuing three years co-wrote and produced his
enthralling solo albums. Each release offered the same surreal
qualities of the parent act, combining dismembered melody lines
with quite startling guitar work. Later Snakefinger releases
appeared outside the Residents' sphere although the artist
still retained links with the group, contributing to STARS AND
HANK FOREVER (1986). His solo recordings continued to be both
imaginative and compelling, but this talented musician
succumbed to a fatal heart attack in 1988.
razno.117goth,
Fields Of The Nephilim
This British rock group were formed in Stevenage,
Hertfordshire, in 1983. The line-up comprised Carl McCoy
(vocals), Tony Pettitt (bass), Peter Yates (guitar) and the
Wright brothers, Nod (b. Alexander; drums) and Paul (guitar).
Their image, that of neo-western desperados, was borrowed from
films such as ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA and THE LONG RYDERS.
They also had the bizarre habit of smothering their
predominantly black clothes in flour and/or talcum powder.
Their version of Goth-rock, tempered with transatlantic
overtones, found favour with those already immersed in the
sounds of the Sisters Of Mercyand the Mission. Signed to the
Situation Two label, Fields Of The Nephilim scored two major UK
Independent hit singles with Preacher Man and Blue Water, while
their first album, DAWN RAZOR, made a modest showing on the UK
album chart. The second set, THE NEPHILIM, reached number 14,
announcing the group's arrival as one of the principal rock
acts of the day. Their devoted following also ensured a showing
on the national singles chart, giving them minor hits with
Moonchild (1988_also an independent chart number 1), Psychonaut
(1989) and Summerland (Dreamed) (1990). In October 1991 McCoy
left the group taking the Fields Of The Nephilim name with him.
The remaining members have since vowed to carry on. With the
recruitment a new vocalist, Alan Delaney, they began gigging
under the name Rubicon in the summer of 1992, leaving McCoy yet
to unveil his version of the Nephilim.

The Residents
Listening to the early Residents LPs as they came out
through the '70s was always attended by the excitement of
knowing you were going to hear something the like of which had
never been heard before_which was odd, since from the beginning
they specialised in cover versions of some very famous pop
songs, songs so familiar they were already part of the
furniture. Under The Residents' tender ministrations, this
furniture suddenly sprouted sharp edges, beds of nails and
back-breaking angles, as they teased from a song's core strains
of pain and anguish which the original composers probably never
realised the song contained.
The covers started on their debut, MEET THE RESIDENTS, the one
with the crudely defaced Beatles sleeve. Boots was the Nancy
Sinatra hit given real threat, and the snatch of The Human
Beinz' Nobody But Me offered a glimpse of the '60s garage-punk
ethic which fuelled their early endeavours. The follow-up
album, The Third Reich `N' Roll, focused entirely on covers
twisted out of shape, its two side-long suites Swastikas On
Parade and Hitler Was A Vegetarian (true, incidentally) casting
the listener adrift in a Sargasso Sea of shattered pop dreams.
It was the way they made every song they touched simultaneously
hilarious and menacing that was impressive about The Third
Reich`N'Roll, an album made by unashamed pop fans whose avowed
intent was to expose the pop industry as some kind of fascistic
mind-control plot. It remains one of the classics of pre-punk
avant-garde pop experimentalism.
FINGERPRINCE, like the bulk of MEET THE RESIDENTS before it,
was largely comprised of tone-poem experiments, though here
they were already stretching themselves to include a lengthy
six-part percussive ballet, Six Things To A Cycle. The expanded
CD version now available includes several tracks left off the
original, the most significant being the eight-minute drama
Walter Westinghouse, an early indication of the group's more
grandiose ambitions. These ambitions would eventually result in
some of The Residents' less approachable works, but for the
immediate future they concentrated on pop-derived structures to
produce the delightful DUCK STAB, an album (originally an EP)
of bizarre new "nursery rhymes" featuring characters such as
Krafty Cheese and Weight-Lifting Lulu; it proved their most
"popular" record. As if they cared.
The Residents operated according to their own determinants,
often seeming to exist in a parallel world to that of the rest
of pop music, creating a musical cartoon mythology which served
as parable or morality play which could, if you wanted it to,
reflect upon the mores of the "real" world. This emerged in a
vague, hazy fashion with the complex drama on the NOT AVAILABLE
album, a project recorded in 1974 and never intended for
release (until the group had forgotten about it), but
peremptorily released by their parent company Ralph Records in
1978 as a stopgap when their forthcoming magnum opus ESKIMO was
delayed. This latter was a strange record indeed, featuring a
series of ESKIMO tales intended to be read to the accompaniment
of the chilly, glacial-wilderness music. Whilst utterly
incomparable and theoretically impressive, it ultimately proved
barely listenable, and certainly impossible to translate into
the pop tradition.
Perhaps realising Eskimo's powerfully alienating character,
they reverted to a less ambitious format for THE COMMERCIAL
ALBUM, which was just that. It may turn out to be their
masterpiece, its 40 tracks a treasure trove of pop styles and
stratagems condensed into one-minute sound-bites (on the
principle that most three-minute pop songs are threefold
repetitions of verse and chorus segments). The CD version
includes a further 10 tracks, including their haunting cover of
It's A Man's Man's Man's World, and their disco remix of the
ESKIMO album, Diskomo, which pre-dates the house remix fad by a
cool seven or eight years. If you want an easy way into The
Residents, this is the album to go for.
Sadly, the creative effort involved in THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM
seemed to drain the group of melodic inspiration, even as early
access to Emulators offered them an infinity of tones and
textures to play with. Their structural ambitions continued
apace, however: the Mole Trilogy (MARK OF THE MOLE, THE TUNES
OF TWO CITIES and THE BIG BUBBLE) found them at their most
flatulent and opaque, its anthropological investigation of the
interaction between two invented cultures, the Moles and the
Chubs, proving of little consequence to all but The Residents
themselves. The live album of the Mole Show is perhaps the best
way of getting through the trilogy, largely thanks to the
humanising presence of magician/comedian Penn Jillette (of Penn
& Teller) as narrator_although the 13th Anniversary Show live
album offers a much wider and more accurate portrait of The
Residents' career, if you must have a live record.
GOD IN THREE PERSONS, The Residents' most recent composition,
is only slightly more satisfying than the Mole Trilogy. Here,
their structural experimentation limits the project's
possibilities: like ESKIMO, the album consists of a series of
musical backdrops to a story, which this time is narrated for
you. The perversity of the tale_about the narrator's discovery
and befriending of Siamese twins, and his eventual sexual
congress with their "join"_sadly finds little resonance in the
music, which indulges the group's tendencies towards longueurs
quite unbearably.
More agreeable by far has been their instigation of the
American Composers series, of which only one volume_that
featuring material by Hank Williams and John Phillip Sousa_is
so far available on CD. On this, and on the recently released
THE KING AND EYE album of Elvis hits, their truest art can be
seen to reside, as at their inception, in their interpretive
abilities. Put at its simplest, no other group can take a dumb
pop song and turn it into a critique of an entire cultural
attitude the way The Residents can. But then, few try.

Tindersticks
Formed in the UK from the ashes of Nottingham group, the
Asphalt Ribbons, Tindersticks revolve around the melancholic
tones of singer Stuart Staples, Dickon Hinchcliffe (violin) and
Dave Boulter (keyboards) joined him in the new act, which was
completed by Neil Fraser (guitar), Mark Cornwill (bass) and Al
McCauley (drums). The sextet made its debut in November 1992
with Patchwork, released on their own Tippy Toe label. A second
single, Marbles, presaged A Marriage Made In Heaven, a
collaboration with Niki Sin of Huggy Bear. issued on the Rough
Trade Singles' club. Having then completed the UNWIRED EP, the
Tindersticks were signed by Andrew Lauder for his newly-formed
This Way Up company. The ensuing TINDERSTICKS was rightly
lauded as a masterpiece, centring on SStaples lugubrious
vocals, which are part Scott Walker, part Ian Curtis and part
Lee Hazelwood. Its atmosphere of late- night disenchantment was
matched by haunting melodies and beautiful instrumentation.
Ensuing releases have included a version of We Have All The
Time In The World, written by John Barry for the Bond film On
Her Majesty's Secret Service and a second EP, KATHLEEN.
Tindersticks have already proved themselves one of the most
fascinating acts to emerge during the '90s.

The Fall
Formed in Manchester, England in 1977, the Fall was the
brainchild of the mercurial Mark E. Smith (b. Mark Edward
Smith, 5 March 1957, Salford, Manchester, England). Over the
years, Smith ruthlessly went through a battalion of musicians
while taking the group through a personal odyssey of his
wayward musical and lyrical excursions. The first line-up
featuring Una Baines, Martin Bramah, Karl Burns and Tony Friel
made their debut on Bingo Master's Breakout, a typical example
of Smith's surreal vision. Initially signed to the small
independent label Step Forward the group recorded three
singles, including the strange Fiery Jack plus LIVE AT THE
WITCH TRIALS. In 1980, the unit signed to Rough Trade and went
on to release the critically acclaimed but often wilfully
bizarre singles How I Wrote Elastic Man and Totally Wired.
Meanwhile, a whole series of line-up changes saw the arrival
and subsequent departures of Marc Riley, Mike Leigh, Martin
Bramah, Yvonne Pawlett and Craig Scanlon. The Fall's convoluted
career continued to produce a series of discordant, yet
frequently fascinating albums from the early menace of DRAGNET
to the chaotic HEX ENDUCTION HOUR. An apparent change in the
group's image and philosophy occurred during 1983 with the
arrival of Mark's wife Brix (Laura Elise Smith). As well as
appearing with the Fall singer/guitarist, Brix simultaneously
continued recording with her own group, the hard pop-orientated
Adult Net. She first appeared on the Fall's PERVERTED BY
LANGUAGE and her presence was felt more strongly when the group
unexpectedly emerged as a potential chart act, successfully
covering R. Dean Taylor's There's A Ghost In My House and later
the Kinks' Victoria. The fusion of Brix's Rickenbacker guitar
sound with Smith's deadpan vocals and distinctive phrasing and
accentuation proved intriguing beyond expectations. On later
albums such as THIS NATION'S SAVING GRACE and THE FRENZ
Microsoft Music Central 96 - Page 2
EXPERIMENT, they lost none of their baffling wordplay or
nagging, insistent rhythms, but the work seemed more focused
and accessible. The line-up changes had slowed, although more
changes were afoot with the arrival of drummer Simon
Wolstenscroft and Marcia Schofield. Proof of Smith's growing
stature among the popular art cognescenti was the staging of
his papal play HEY! LUCIANIand the involvement of dancer
Michael Clark in the production of I AM KURIOUS ORANJ. Any
suggestions that the Fall might be slowly heading for a degree
of commercial acceptance underestimated Smith's restless
spirit. By 1990, Brix had left the singer and the group, and
Schofield followed soon after. Unpredictable and unique, the
Fall under Smith's guidance remain one of the most
uncompromising yet finest groups in British rock history.

Nitzer Ebb
The driving force behind this electronic based band are Douglas
McCarthy (b. 1 September 1966, Chelmsford, England; vocals) and
Bon Harris (b. 12 August 1965, Chelmsford, England;
percussion/vocals). Frustrated by their environment at school
in Chelmsford, and inspired by bands like D.A.F., Bauhaus and
the Birthday Party, they began their first experiments with
synthesizers and drum machines in 1983. They were joined in
their strictly amateur pursuits by school-mate David Gooday.
They had summoned enough experience and confidence to release
their first single the next year, Isn't It Funny How Your Body
Works, on Power Of Voice Communications. They were nothing if
not prolific, releasing a further five singles over the next
twelve months, which led to a deal with the premier UK
independent stable, Mute Records, and Geffen Records in the US.
1987 saw their first album on the shelves, THAT TOTAL AGE, home
to surging minimalist aggression, and the beginning of a
long-term relationship with producer Flood, who would remix the
single Join In The Chant. On Gooday's departure Julian Beeston
was enrolled. After a lengthy European trek with Depeche Mode,
the band recorded BELIEF, and in 1989 followed up their own
world tour with SHOWTIME. Their third album revealed a swing in
attitude, with music that was less confrontational and more
consumer friendly. This was particularly true in the US, where
the single Fun To Be Had peaked at Number 2 in the US dance
charts. Their most recent album has confirmed their popularity
with fans and a previously reluctant press. As McCarthy puts
it: 'With the advent of EBBHEAD, I think we've managed to twist
listenability around to our way of thinking'.
razno.123goth,
Peter Murphy
The former Bauhaus vocalist set out on his solo career after a
brief stint as half of Dali's Car, with former Japan member
Mick Karn(one album: THE WAKING HOUR). Murphy was already
famous in his own right for appearing as the enigmatic figure
in a Maxell Tapes television advertisement. His first solo
output was a cover version of Magazine's The Light Pours Out Of
Me, for the Beggars Banquet sampler THE STATE OF THINGS. This
was included on his debut album, which boasted a massive credit
list including Daniel Ash, his old songwriting partner in
Bauhaus, John McGeogh (who played on the original of The Light
Pours Out Of Me) and Howard Hughes. The debut set a precedent
for critical apathy (in the UK at least) which has accompanied
all subsequent recordings. 1987's LOVE HYSTERIA included a
cover of Iggy Pop's Fun Time, amongst other typically dramatic
gestures. By the third album a regular band had been formed,
consisting of Peter Bonas (guitar), Terl Bryant (drums), Eddie
Branch (bass) and Paul Statham (keyboards/guitar). All four had
played on the previous album, Branch and Bonas on the first as
well. One of the better songs from DEEP, Cuts You Deep, won the
Top Modern Rock Track in the 1990 Billboard Year In Music
Awards.

And we kissed as the sky fell and holding you close
how I always held close in your fear
Remembering you
running soft through the night
you were bigger and brighter and whiter than snow
scream at the make-beleive
screamed at the sky
and you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you

crying for the death of you heart
you were stone white, so delicate, lost in the cold
you were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you
how you used to be
so drowned to the angels, so much more than everything

otvirili predstavnistva velikih kuca ovde...A, ako to
budu uradili cene ce biti astronomske recimo ovako:

dem.
Naravno svuda je rec o originalima.

Song: Don't Let Go
What's it gonna be
Cuz I can't pretend
Don't you wanna be more than friends
Hold me tight and don't let go
Don't let go
Have the right to loose control
Don't let go
I often tell myself
That we could be more than just friends
I know you think that if we move to soon
It would all end
I live in misery when you're not around
And I won't be satisfied 'till we're taking those vows
There'll be some lovemaking, heartbreaking, soul shaking
Oh, lovemaking, heartbreaking, soul shaking
What's it gonna be
Cuz I can't pretend
Don't you wanna be more than friends
Hold me tight and don't let go
Don't let go
Have the right to loose control
Don't let go
I often fantasize
The stars above are watching you
They know my heart and speak to yours
Like only lovers do
If I could wear your clothes
I'd pretend I was you and loose control
There'll be some lovemaking, heartbreaking, soul shaking
Oh lovemaking, heartbreaking, soul shaking, oh yeah
What's it gonna be
Cuz I can't pretend
Don't you wanna be more than friends
Hold me tight and don't let go
Don't let go
Have the right to loose control
Don't let go
Running in and out my life has got me so confused
You gotta make the sacrifice
Somebody's got to choose
We can make it if we try for the sake of you and I
Together we can make it right
What's it gonna be
Cuz I can't pretend
Don't you wanna be more than friends
Hold me tight and don't let go
Don't let go
Have the right to loose control
Don't let go

Utisci sa Kande Kodže i Nebojše ukratko:
Karta 20 din.
Koncert počeo oko 11.452 i to nastupom grupe Shazalakazu.
peva a osim toga i svira flautu ( tečno :)).
Kanta Krdža i Krnjača uvek isti - meni barem

peva onako kako peva a ako ti trebaju komercijalni txtovi
i muzika, sigurno ih necesh naci kod njih.

razno.186naumov,
Pa znam gitaristu.
Inace nemam nista protiv njih.Jednostavno mi se nesvidjaju.Mozda kada postanu

I Don't Want to Know
Vaya Con Dios
MUSIC: D. Schoufs/D. Klein/J.M. Gielen
LYRICS: D. Klein
You've seen him on the street today
Heading for some sleaze cafe
He wasn't alone
He wasn't alone
Some beauty hung onto his arm
I shouldn't need to be alarmed
He's done it before
He's done it before
Where and how?
I don't want to know
You think she's one of his old flames
Some firey-looking kind of dame
You found her dull but just the same
She stole the show
I don't want to know
Isn't it a crying shame
You wouldn't mention any name
Afraid I couldn't stand the pain
Or take the blow
I don't want to know
You've seen him on the downtown side
Drinking hard and acting wild
He was not alone
Not on his own
You say he looked a sorry sight
You know he's had another fight
He's done it before
Yes he's done it before
Where and how?
I don't want to know
A smile breaks on your poker face
Tells me you're gonna throw
the Ace of Spades
Drop it, and watch me fall
on evil days
And let me go
I don't want to know
Why don't I try to understand
He's just as weak as any other man
He'll come back to me in the end
Isn't that so?
I don't want to know
