To uopste nisam ni rekao. II varijanta : Ja sam Panis.

:) 1. auto-moto.45 vector,
Cleveland Race Results July 13, 1997 THE HARD WAY By David Phillips Alex Zanardi scored the fifth win of his Indy car career the hard way, storming back from a couple of early penalties to catch and pass Gil de Ferran in the waning laps of the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland. Zanardi had enjoyed a clear advantage over the field throughout practice and qualifying, taking pole from de Ferran by more than 1/2 second, and he was forced to use all of that advantage in charging back to the lead after falling to 22nd spot in the aftermath of his penalties. But he caught de Ferran with five laps remaining and outbraked the Valvoline Reynard-Honda in Turn One to take the lead. De Ferran, conserving fuel, was unable to mount a counterattack and Zanardi took the victory by 1.282 seconds. "It would have been stupid (after the penalties) to think of getting any result, or to get this or that place," said Zanardi. "All I can do is get the most out of my car, and drive 120% for the rest of the race and see what I got. As it turns out, I couldn't have gotten more." Zanardi led the first 22 laps of the race from de Ferran, Christian Fittipaldi and Herta, but made a major blunder when he pitted before CART had opened pit lane during a full course yellow caused by a crash involving Richie Hearn. Zanardi, who had radio problems with team owner Chip Ganassi, misunderstood instructions and also failed to see the sign at the entrance to pit lane indicating the pits were closed. "I lost radio communication on the second lap," explained Zanardi. "When it went yellow Chip was screaming and somehow I managed to hear something on the radio. He said 'Stay out.' Then I heard him again and I thought he said 'Pit this time.'" "I was a little surprised and, to be honest, I never saw the sign. I was following the pace car and maybe it blocked my view of the sign. It was pretty confusing." At least Zanardi was not alone. Michael Andretti, Dario Franchitti, Mauricio Gugelmin, Paul Tracy, Michel Jourdain, Jr. and Juan Manuel Fangio II, followed the leader into the pits in lemming-like fashion, incurring penalties similar to that subsequently imposed on Zanardi, namely being ordered to fall to the back of the lead lap. "All I know is I didn't see the (pit lane) board and followed the leader into the pits," said Andretti. "I did see the pits closed sign," said de Ferran, "and I was quite amazed to see Alex go into the pits." "When I saw the cars go into the pits I though 'Great, it's Christmas for Bryan," said Herta, who moved gained two positions as a result. Trying to make the best of a bad situation, the crews of Zanardi, Gugelmin and Franchitti called their drivers in for an additional splash of fuel the lap before the restart. The decision that was to prove key to Zanardi's success, for in the closing stages of the race de Ferran and others were in a fuel conservation mode, while Zanardi had no fuel worries. But first there was the matter of another penalty for the Italian, this for a blend line violation. After the Lap 31 restart, Zanardi was required to make a "drive through" of pit lane, rejoining in 22nd position. "I wasn't celebrating," said Zanardi of his twin penalties, "but I never thought all was lost." The penalties, combined with some shuffles on the first round of stops once the pit lane was declared open, left de Ferran and Fittipaldi leading from Jimmy Vasser (up from fifteenth on the grid), Herta, Scott Pruett, Greg Moore, Andre Ribeiro, Al Unser, Jr. and Parker Johnstone. De Ferran and Fittipaldi quickly showed a clean pair of heals to Vasser, who soon yielded third spot to Herta's Shell Reynard-Ford. While de Ferran kept Fittipaldi about 1.5s behind, Herta closed to within 3.5s of the Budweiser/Kmart Swift-Ford but could get no closer and, in fact, slipped to 7s adrift by the second round of pit stops. "I had to drive pretty hard to close on them, then I went into a fuel conservation a little early and caught some traffic," said Herta. Zanardi was also driving hard, very hard. After making short work of Fangio and Adrian Fernandez, he spent several laps behind Gugelmin before passing the PacWest machine on Lap 49. He quickly advanced past Michel Jourdain, Franchitti and Raul Boesel to move into thirteenth spot by the second round of pit stops. The leaders all pitted between Laps 58 and 60, enabling Zanardi to actually lead Laps 60 and 61 before pitting himself on Lap 62. Quick work by the Target/Ganassi crew got him out in fourth place behind de Ferran, Herta and Moore and inches ahead of a long train consisting of Vasser, Unser, Andretti, Pruett, Bobby Rahal and a disconsolate Fittipaldi who lost a shot at a podium finish when the rear air jack failed on the Newman/Haas machine. "It's another opportunity down that got away," said Fittipaldi. "Everything I worked hard for so far in the race went down the drain." Zanardi quickly gained another spot when Moore's engine let go on Lap 69, leaving him four seconds adrift of Herta. He quickly carved into Herta's margin to the tune of 1/2 second a lap, latching onto the tail of the Shell Reynard on Lap 75. After a couple of his passing attempts were rebuffed, Zanardi went around Herta for good exiting Turn One on Lap 77. "I was in a bit of a fuel conservation mode," said Herta, "and I was abusing my brakes trying to keep Alex from catching me. Eventually I ran a little wide because I was pushing so hard. Once Alex got alongside of me I let him go, 'cause I knew I couldn't race with him." Next on Zanardi's agenda was de Ferran, some seven seconds up the road with 12 laps to the checkered flag. Like Herta, de Ferran was in a fuel conservation mode and had also abused his brakes in the process. Zanardi reeled-in the Walker entry to the tune of a second a lap, making a do or die pass as they lapped Fangio entering Turn Three on Lap 82 to stay on de Ferran's gearbox. "I took a big risk getting around a backmarker, I think it was one of the Eagles," said Zanardi. "He let Gil past and didn't see me coming but I went for the hole anyway." Latched onto de Ferran's tail at last, Zanardi wasted no time in going for the lead, outbraking the Brazilian into Turn One on Lap 85. "I looked in my mirrors and saw Alex was too far back," said de Ferran. "I thought 'He won't try to pass, and if he does I'll repass him on the exit.' But when he passed me, he just left me." With four more laps worth of fuel on board, Zanardi was able to run a bit richer mixture than de Ferran and simply motored away on the run down to Turn Three. From there on, it was clear sailing for the Italian. "The initial disadvantage (the early penalties) was an advantage at the end of the race," said Zanardi. "We were at the back of the field and we pitted for additional fuel. That's what helped win the race. I appreciate the thinking of my team to get the best out of the worst." De Ferran and Herta were likewise secure in second and third, while Unser came home fourth ahead of Rahal and Fittipaldi gained some measure of satisfaction by carving his way back to sixth place, his effort aided and abetted by Michael Andretti's engine failure and Vasser's free-fall to 13th when his final set of tires that turned what had been a competitive car into a sled. auto-moto.60 vpoznanovic,
F1: British GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Jacques, on fighting back to win a race that looked as though it had slipped away with that half minute lost in the pits. What went wrong there? JV: Somehow the left front wheel became loose, so it was very difficult to drive the car because you had to turn the steering wheel a lot from one side to the other. It became very heavy and there wasn't any grip like that. That is the wheel that got stuck when we came into the pits. We lost a lot of time there and when we got back to the race track I was seventh. But the car was very strong. I caught up with the two Benettons of Wurz and Alesi, who were sliding a little bit because they were on a onestop strategy. But once they got out of the way I could push a little bit, but still I got stuck behind Hakkinen. I could see he had blistered his rear tyres, so I was just waiting until the last few laps to make my move and then be broke something. This is a great result for us, though. Q. It must have been a relief to see Michael Schumacher go out ... JV: Yes, it was, because they used to do that (retire) quite a lot last year and they haven't been doing it this year. So it is great to see something like that happening to them this year as well, because we have had our share of mechanical problems this year. It balances out the championship. Q. And you are confident you would have been able to get past Hakkinen if he had continued in the race? JV: Definitely yes, because he was beginning to slide more and more. He had blistered his left rear tyre, something looked weird on it. I think I could have made a move towards the end of the race, although it would have been very difficult. Q. Were you satisfied with your pit stop strategy? JV: Two stops was the right strategy, it was just that we lost a lot of time from laps 10 to 20, and then [with the front wheel] in the first pit stop. Otherwise it would have been no problem. Q. What are your feelings about Hockenheim in two weeks' time? JV: It is great that we have managed to get to within four points of Michael, especially after the last two races. I am happy to be eating back some of those points. But I don't think Hockenheim will be a great track for us with its slow corners and low downforce. Those are not the conditions in which our car is at its best. But we can fight fairly against Michael and I am looking forward to a good battle. Q. Jean, this is your third 2nd place here at Silverstone after 1994 and 1995. Are you satisfied with it today? JA: I am relieved, not just for me but for the team and everyone. We have been having problems in qualifying which means that we cannot be in a good position at the start. But we are able to compromise for the race, so one stop was very good at this stage. Q. After starting 11th on the grid, are you surprised to be here in 2nd place, then? JA: For sure, yes. When you are doing a race like this with lots of fuel, it looks as though you are really slow and you don't feel that you are in good shape. Then suddenly you see your positions improving on the board and to be 2nd today is really amazing for me. Q. Your team mate Alexander Wurz was pushing you hard for most of the race. Were you worried about that? JA: Honestly, I was happy to be in front of him at the first corner, because I knew how capable he was. Then, because I was in good shape, I had the possibility to keep the position. Q. With Benetton moving into 3rd place in the world constructors' championship, can we expect to see you placing as well as this in the nextfew races? JA: I hope so. I am pushing the team as much as I can, but everybody is already working flat out. We are waiting for some new parts now, and I am very confident for the high speed circuits like Hockenheim. We are in good shape with the Renault engine, too, which means we are in a good situation. Q. Alexander, you must be delighted to be 3rd in only your third ever Grand Prix ... AW: It is a very, very good result and I am really pleased. I want to thank the team for the really great strategy today. Without this strategy we would not have been here. Q. When you were pushing Jean so hard, was there any moment when you thought you could get past? Or were you instructed not to try to pass him? AW: I was looking for an opportunity when we were lapping slower cars. But in the end, after the pit stop and when the situation became clear, I decided to hold back by myself because it would have been dangerous [to have tried to pass him]. At the beginning of the race I was struggling with the car because it had a lot of fuel on board and it was oversteering. I thought it was going to be a very hard race, but when the fuel ran down and after the first put stop the car was in very good shape on the second set of tyres. That allowed me to follow Jean. Q. Do you expect to be racing again in Germany in two weeks' time? AW: I don't know. It depends entirely on the situation of Gerhard Berger.

Ů│Ţ Nadam se da ces i ubuduce slati ovakve izvestaje. Toronto Preview July 16, 1997 FERNANDEZ NOT OPTIMISTIC ABOUT DEFENDING TORONTO By Nathan Siebens Adrian Fernandez, defending champion of the Molson Indy Toronto, returns to the site of his first, last, and only PPG CART World Series win to date this weekend languishing in 19th place in the PPG Cup point standings. Fernandez has been fighting the Lola T97/00 chassis, a chassis deemed so uncompetitve that his team procured a Reynard chassis for teammate Andre Ribeiro. Unfortunately for Fernandez, the team was not able to get a second Reynard for him, leaving him to continue with the Lola. To its credit, the chassis manufacturer has tried to make changes to make the car more competitive, but in Cleveland, the chassis failed to produce any better results. "It is going to be very difficult for us to, of course, defend our victory from last year this year because the car hasn't just been competitive enough," Fernandez said. "It has been very difficult to set up the car. It basically has no balance. It is very difficult to get balance in places like Cleveland where it is very bumpy. That type of places, the problem basically magnifies in a much greater deal. That is why we were struggling in that capability in Cleveland. "For Toronto, hopefully, smoother tracks suits more the car and it makes us a little bit more competitive. So, it is going to be. I say to be able to get to the podium, I can say it is going to be impossible. not because I don't want to do it, it is just because we don't have the equipment to be able to run up there." While Fernandez is not optimistic about competing in Toronto, Canadians Paul Tracy and Greg Moore are excited to be returning to their homeland. Tracy comes home with the PPG Cup point lead, 11 points ahead of second place, Moore. Both drivers are looking forward to putting on a good show in front of their countrymen. "The Toronto race has always been the most important for me because I'm racing in front of my family and friends and there is a bit of extra pressure to perform," Tracy said. "Returning home as the points leader will make it even more special for me, since I've never been in this good a position when we raced there. Winning this race in 1993 was the most important victory of my career because I know how much it did for me in Canada and for Canadian racing in general. To win this race again would be a huge thrill for me, especially since it would be Roger's (Penske) 100th win." "The track in Toronto is my kind of track," added Moore. "It is one where a driver can get a rhythm, a flow and drive smoothly. This track is very good for passing compared to other street courses such as Detroit, and this makes for a much more interesting race. I think the Toronto race people have done a great job in keeping the track smooth as changes were made for the new World Trade Centre." Another driver looking forward to the race in Toronto is Bobby Rahal. Rahal has not won a race in five years, but he is always competitive in Toronto. This just might be the weekend Rahal ends his losing streak. "As our record here indicates, we quite obviously like coming to Toronto," Rahal said. "We won the inaugural race here back in 1986, and have finished on the podium on six other occasions. I don't think we have a record like that on any other track we visit. I love street circuits, and this course in particular has been very good to me." Fernandez's win last year was marred by the deaths of driver Jeff Krosnoff and corner worker Gary Avrin. The tragic loss of these two men is on the minds of every driver as they return to Toronto, and many safety precautions have been taken since last year's race to make the circuit safer for everyone involved. "Every year the race tracks are getting safer and safer," said Michael Andretti, who has won the Toronto race five times. "Obviously in Toronto, you'll see a lot of changes in the area of safety based on Jeff's accident. What happened last year was very tragic, and in a lot of ways, very freak, but it still opened your eyes to some of the other areas that nobody realized were dangerous. The series and our race promoters are committed to making some changes to make it safer." Last year, Alex Zanardi dominated the first two thirds of the race until a botched pit stop pushed him back to third place. The stop gave the lead to Fernandez who would never relinquish the point. Zanardi, who led a total of 63 laps in the event, managed to fight his way past Bobby Rahal for second place late in the running but could not catch Fernandez. Zanardi came home second followed by Rahal in third, Moore in fourth and Tracy in fifth. The race was red-flagged two laps short of the scheduled 95-lap distance due to the tragic accident. WHO'S HOT Alex Zanardi - The Italian was hooked up at Cleveland. He could not be denied victory even though he incurred two penalties that moved him to the rear of the field. With the win, Zanardi pulled within 16 points of leader Tracy. Christian Fittipaldi - Since returning from his injuries in Australia, Fittipaldi has been driving like a man possessed. At Portland, he was in position to finish second, only to be dispatched by eventual winner Mark Blundell and Raul Boesel on the final lap, dropping him to fourth. It was still a good result considering all he's been through. He finished sixth at Cleveland, which could have easily been an even higher finish had it not been for a bad pit stop. Al Unser Jr. - While fourth place is not exactly grounds for declaring somebody "hot," the way Al Jr.'s season has been going, a fourth place finish calls for celebration. Perhaps this finish will be the catalyst for bigger and better things in the upcoming races. WHO'S NOT Arnd Meier and Charlie Nearburg - It is painfully obvious that these two drivers have no business participating in the PPG CART World Series. Both were always in the way at Cleveland. While it was Nearburg's first Indy car experience, he proved that he was in over his head. Meier has been a moving chicane since his debut at Australia. Sponsorship dollars or not, these guys need to go. Gualter Salles - The rookie who came into the series with so much promise after a successful 1996 Indy Lights effort has not had a good season thus far. He has managed to score only one point this season, which does not bode well for his hopes of winning Rookie of the Year. However, he is driving for a new team, and 1997 appears to be a season in which everyone involved is still learning about each other. Adrian Fernandez - His 1997 problems can be summed up in one word: "Lola." Toronto Friday Qualifying July 18, 1997 TORONTO QUALIFYING TO THE SWIFT By David Phillips Toronto is good medicine for Michael Andretti. Always has been. He's earned five of his 35 CART wins at the Toronto Molson Indy. He's won at Toronto in the midst of some of his best seasons, and he's won at Toronto during the lean times as well. So it should come as no surprise that in a season in which Andretti has struggled to follow-up his dramatic opening round victory for Swift at Homestead, he should post the fastest time in Friday's qualifying session at Toronto. "It's scary," he said. "People talk about (my record) here all the time. I'm waiting for something to go wrong. All I know is I like the track and i enjoy coming to Toronto." So much so that Andretti was fastest in both the morning practice and in the afternoon qualifying, although rising temperatures and a slick track contributed to a lap some .3s slower in the latter session. "It was slipperier in the afternoon than the morning," said Andretti. "That's unusual for a street circuit. I think it has a lot to do with the tire war, the tires are quick but they're only good for a couple of laps." A couple of laps was all Mark Blundell needed to hustle PacWest Racing's Reynard-Mercedes into second place on the grid, a nice follow-up to his third best qualifying time at Cleveland last weekend. Early in the session, Blundell brushed the wall in Turn Six and was forced to sit out a few minutes of the session while repairs were effected. He rebounded to turn a lap at 59.894s to slot-in beside Andretti on the provisional grid. "I'm pretty happy where we're at," said Blundell. "The car is still a bit loose and if we can settle the rear end down we should be able to go quite a bit quicker. But in general it's quite well behaved. "I just clipped the wall in Turn Six which broke the left rear toe link. That gave me a fright, because the car jumped completely sideways on me through the fast right hander. That made me think 'I may have broken something' and I brought it straight in." Third quickest was an impressive Dario Franchitti, who posted a 60.080s lap in his first visit to the Toronto circuit, his time all the more remarkable given the fact that problems with his full throttle gearchange forced him to switch back and forth between his primary and back-up cars. "We switched to the back-up in the morning after we had a problem with the gearbox," said Franchitti. "So I learned the circuit with a car I wasn't especially comfortable with. We improved the primary car for qualifying and then we got a clear lap, which was half the battle." Gil de Ferran rebounded from a trouble plagued morning practice in the Walker Racing Reynard-Honda to post fourth fastest time at 60.240s, while Scott Pruett was an impressive fifth fastest in the Brahma Reynard-Ford, his time coming in the second (and slower) half of the qualifying session. Pruett echoed the thoughts of many drivers when he discussed the slippery track conditions. "It's very tough getting grip out there," said Pruett. "In all the turns there is the cement (patches), and the cement is very slippery. You really have to drive it with a blind faith when you go across it. It's so slippery going across it, and then once you're on the other side you pick up some grip." "We're lacking overall grip and a big reason for that is because of the increase in track temperature (from this morning," said Al Unser, Jr., whose 61.228 was good only for 18th spot. "Also the track is really green so that makes it even more slippery. Our biggest problem is through the corners where there's a transition from cement back to blacktop. It's like driving on ice." "It's like driving on soap." said Alex Zanardi, dominant last weekend at Cleveland but just sixth fastest today. "There's no grip and the car isn't working very well on the bumps either," said Zanardi's teammate Jimmy Vasser, mired in 13th spot with a lap at 60.641s. "Like everyone else, we have no grip, less than none," said Parker Johnstone, whose 60.670s lap was put him one spot behind Vasser. Other drivers noted the heavy build-up of "marbles" off- line, the product of the increasingly stickier tires produced by Goodyear and Firestone in CART's ongoing tire competition. "There's a hell of a lot of marbles," said Blundell. "It's already difficult to overtake on street courses, and with the marbles building up the way they are here, if you get a couple of inches off line there's no grip." Which places even more emphasis on qualifying at the front of the grid, a fact of which Andretti is fully aware. "It used to be you had one hard tire, and if it worked for one lap in qualifying it usually worked for the race," said Andretti. "Now you need a different set-up for qualifying and the race. You've got to compromise a bit, but you don't want to go too far or else you'll be starting too far back. And with how competitive the series is these days you just can't pass people to get to the front like you used to." Which makes Saturday's final qualifying session all the more important. Toronto Qualifying Results July 19, 1997 ROOKIE FRANCHITTI CAPTURES MOLSON INDY POLE By Ned Wicker Dario Franchitti may have been a surprise addition to the top three during yesterday's provisional qualifying for the Molson Indy Toronto, but after a stunning 58.618/100.080 mph romp during second day qualifying, surprise quickly gave way to respect for the young Scotsman. Driving an unsponsored Reynard/Mercedes-Benz on Firestone tires for owner Carl Hogan, Franchitti has been showcasing his talents on a regular basis since vaulting into the lead during the Motorola 300 at Gateway International Speedway on Memorial Day weekend. He's rapidly become a player in the PPG CART World Series. When the session came to a close, Hogan, a big bear of a man, became very emotional, as tears came to his eyes. Hogan has been putting his own money into the team, as he believes the team needs to be established first, then a sponsor will have a good product to latch on to. The progress of his rookie driver has been apparent and Hogan was asked if he wanted Franchitti, who has tested for the McLaren F1 team, to drive the PPG Cup circuit for Hogan Racing in 1998. "If he doesn't return next year I'll be dead," said Hogan, getting a huge laugh from the media. "It's called suicide." For Franchitti, it was just a day at the office, as he displayed no outward sign of emotion. He was working with his tires, trying to get in a good lap without pushing his car too far. "I think I made up most of my time on the first half of the lap," said Franchitti of his flyer. "Once I did that, I thought 'Well, that was pretty good.' And I backed off a little bit. I just didn't want to take too many chances. We were working on the car all session to get the best out of our last set of tires, so I wasn't worrying about what other people were doing because I knew the car was getting better the whole time. I just went out with a clear mind and went for it." The rookie driver is learning this year, but obviously catching on quickly. "I think I've learned a lot about qualifying and getting the most out of tires," said Franchitti. "The guys on the team are learning more about setting up the car." As for his reward, in addition to the $10,000 Marlboro Pole Award, Franchitti got a big hug from his car owner. "I was warned about Carl's bear hug before-hand: he told me if I won the pole it was going to hurt," Franchitti noted. "It was a pretty great moment." For the first time in CART history, there will be an all- British front row, as Englishman Mark Blundell joins Franchitti on the point for tomorrow's race. Second is the best career qualifying effort for Blundell, whose previous best was a third in last weekend's Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland. "It's a great day for the UK and Canada," said Blundell. "I don't think there has ever been two Brits on the front row of a CART race." Blundell was second yesterday, but never made a bid for the top spot, although he did post his best speed of the day after Franchitti made his flyer. "Basically, we had a decent race car," said Blundell. "I was able to hang it out a little bit to get a good time. Tomorrow the key issue will be keeping the tires in good shape. There will be a lot of marbles, which will make passing more difficult and staying on the line absolutely critical." The final battle for the pole heated up right away in the final qualifying session. Five minutes into the session Franchitti was quickest at 104.707 mph, followed by Bobby Rahal at 104.687. Seven minutes into that session, Michael Andretti was enjoying the honored spot on top of the leader broad, making a jump from fifth position to first with a 59.120/104.797 mph lap in Carl Haas' Kmart/Texaco Havoline Lola/Ford-Cosworth, picking up where he left off on Friday. However, for Michael, that would be his best lap of the day, as the onslaught on his pole began with seven minutes remaining. With 10 minutes remaining, Franchitti made a move, posting a 58.616/100.080 mph lap, pushing Michael to second. But it wasn't over. Mark Blundell's Motorola Reynard/Mercedes-Benz hooked up and delivered a snappy 58.926/105.142 mph lap, with just under five minutes to go. Although he would not improve that mark, it proved good enough to claim second place for the Portland winner. Still, Michael was not out of the woods, as Bobby Rahal nudged him to the outside of the second row with a 59.050/104.921 mph run in the Miller Lite Reynard/Ford-Cosworth. Rahal made major changes to his mount before the morning practice session and immediately knew the car was going to be better for qualifying. "In qualifying we made some changes and I'm really pleased that in the heat we were able to go a little quicker," said Rahal, who won the pole here in 1992. "The Goodyears usually like it a little cooler, so I'm happy we were able to improve." Improve is an understatement. "Yesterday, I think we were eleventh, and boy we were awful," Rahal continued. "We were scratching our heads a bit, sat down talked trying to figure out what was going on with it." Scott Pruett will start fifth tomorrow, followed by Alex Zanardi, Andre Ribeiro, Raul Boesel, Greg Moore and Mauricio Gugelmin. As for Franchitti, his pole winning performance is expected to help Hogan gain a major sponsor for 1998. After all, the bill for a competitive PPG Cup effort starts at approximately $8 million, a difficult sum for even the successful businessman like Hogan to muster. NOTES: -- Last week's winner Alex Zanardi was sixth on the grid today, nowhere near where he was a week ago in terms of making the race car happy. "We have not found the right set-up for our car for this track and I will stay late and work hard tonight to see what we can do to make our car better." One of the things that Zanardi changed on the car in an effort to pick up the pace was change to the primary Firestone tires. -- Provisional pole winner Michael Andretti slid back to fourth, as 15 drivers toured the course in under 60 seconds. After a good first day, Andretti was gunning for the pole, but said he never got a clear lap. "You only have a two-lap window while the tires are at their peak and I didn't get to take advantage of that window," Andretti explained. "I really wanted this pole. Since the beginning of last season I have concentrated on the win. The pole would have been nice, but I didn't expect it." -- Missing in action were the two Marlboro Penske cars, as Paul Tracy came in 14th and Al Unser Jr. was 17th. "We still have to get more balance out of our cars," said Unser. "If we can achieve a better balance, the loss of grip we've been struggling with will automatically come with an improved balance. Even though we've had a tough time with road and street course set-ups this year, the Marlboro cars are competitive on race day. It's qualifying that has us in mid- field." Unser proved that a week ago, by romping from well back in the pack to a fourth-place finish. As for Tracy, the gains he made were not enough to make a difference. "Today was a huge disappointment for me," said Tracy. "We're really struggling with the Marlboro car and both Al and I have exhausted ourselves physically just trying to drive the car. We've been able to pick up a bit more speed in each session, but they're very small gains compared to what the rest of the field is doing. Tomorrow we're just going to have to go with what we've got and work our way through the field." -- Gil de Ferran, who had a splendid run last week in the Valvoline Reynard/Honda, did not enjoy a fun afternoon on the shores of Lake Ontario. "The rear of the car would not settle down," de Ferran explained. "I was sliding all over the place. We've been wrestling with finding a balanced set-up for the race." Toronto Race Results July 20, 1997 AND NOW FOR SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT By David Phillips Mark Blundell scored his second Indy car win in three races with an impressive victory at the Toronto Molson Indy. In contrast to his maiden win at Portland, where he stormed from behind to edge Gil de Ferran by .027s at the checkered flag, Blundell was in command at Toronto virtually from start to finish. Second on the grid, he took the lead when pole-sitter Dario Franchitti spun trying to stave-off Bobby Rahal's first turn passing bid. Blundell went on to lead 93 of 95 laps, the last 18 under heavy pressure from Alex Zanardi, and won by the comparatively wide margin of .659s. "Today was a totally different race than Portland," said Blundell. "We came from the front row of the grid, led from the beginning and stayed there 'til the very end. "It was one of the best races of my life. When you lead almost from start to finish and have that kind of pressure, it's certainly got to be one of the best races of your career." The race was a bitter disappointment to Franchitti, who took his first Indy car pole on Saturday afternoon in the Hogan Racing Reynard-Mercedes, edging Blundell by just over .3s. His race nearly ended in Turn One, when he spun after his incident with Rahal, forcing the rest of the field to take evasive action. "Bobby got a little bit better start than I and he tried to come down the inside of the corner," said Franchitti, "but the move wasn't on." Not surprisingly, Rahal saw it a bit differently. "We had a good start and I was pretty much half way up alongside of him and he saw me coming," said Rahal. "He seemed to try and keep me from getting there and I was just trying to keep from hitting him but I had nowhere to go. I think if he would have had a little more room he would have made it. But it's unfortunate. I don't do those things, so it was entirely a racing incident. And it was unfortunate." Miraculously, there was no further contact but Franchitti and Christian Fittipaldi (who stalled in the melee) dropped to the back of the field and began their recovery when the race was restarted on the second lap. Blundell led away from the green flag from Rahal, Scott Pruett, Andre Ribeiro, Greg Moore, Michael Andretti, Raul Boesel and Zanardi. While Blundell quickly went to work fashioning a useful cushion over Rahal and Pruett, Zanardi was on the move, scything his way past Boesel on Lap 3, Andretti the next time 'round, Moore on Lap Six and Ribeiro on Lap Seven. Next he took Pruett on the entry to Turn Five on Lap Twelve, then stalked Rahal for seven laps before repeating his Turn Five handiwork on the Miller Reynard on Lap 19. "Turn Five is a place where you can usually pass backmarkers if they're cooperative," noted Blundell. "But passing a car of equal performance there - that's doing something." Zanardi's rapid climb may have been aided and abetted by the fact that the Target/Ganassi team had made a late switch from the prime to the softer option tires in qualifying, giving him a little extra grip through much of the first stint. Zanardi wasn't the only driver on the move, however. Franchitti and Fittipaldi roared back from their early troubles to run tenth and thirteenth respectively as the first round of pit stop neared. By that stage a number of drivers were in desperate need of new tires including both Target/Ganassi drivers (the second placed Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser, who'd moved up to 15th to ninth in the early going). Mainly, however, it was the Goodyear runners who were in trouble. "We knew we were going to have to tough it out because Firestone had a very good race tire," said Rahal. "We could wind it up in qualifying, but we weren't sure how it would handle itself over the entire run...The last ten laps of each run the tires went off and it was all I could do to hang on. Finally I just had to pit for new tires." Blundell and Zanardi maintained station on the first round of stops, but Ribiero and Andretti both beat Pruett back on track, while Rahal emerged in sixth place ahead of Boesel and Moore with Mauricio Gugelmin and Paul Tracy running ahead of the flying Franchitti and Vasser. Franchitti's bid to get back into contention only lasted as far as Turn Three on Lap 40 where the Hogan Reynard/Mercedes clouted the wall. "I just came in and clipped the wall and everything snapped and we were done," said Franchitti. "It's my fault there and I apologized to my team and especially Carl (Hogan)." Franchitti's demise apart, the running order remained largely unchanged until the next round of pit stops. Ribeiro was the first driver to head for service on Lap 64 and by Lap 69 everyone of consequence had pitted save for Zanardi, Blundell and Vasser. Zanardi duly stopped on Lap 69 but on his return to the action left his braking for Turn One far too late and skated out across the slippery concrete apex just as Moore arrived, intent on taking his normal line. Zanardi's left front smacked Moore's right rear, punting the Players Reynard into the wall and retirement. "I got out of pit lane on cold tires," said Zanardi. "Greg turned in on me considering the line I took into the corner, but when I got on the concrete...I had to put full lock on the steering wheel and he turned into me. There was nothing, nothing I could do." "Obviously he's going to say it wasn't his fault," said an unimpressed Moore. "It takes a much bigger man to admit it was his fault. I gave him plenty of room, but the fact that his left front hit my right rear shows I had the line on him." The shunt resulted in the day's second full course yellow, enabling track officials to send the street sweeper out in he bargain to clean-up the piles of tire marbles all 'round the circuit. Meanwhile, Blundell and Zanardi were able to make their second pits stops during the full course yellow. Vasser jumped up to ninth place in the process, while Blundell emerged in the lead again but now with the lapped cars of Fittipaldi, Juan Manuel Fangio, II and P.J. Jones as a buffer back to Zanardi. Having switched to the prime (harder) tires for the final stint, Blundell was happy to get a breather. "That was very significant, from the point of view that I couldn't get the front tires to come-in for a couple of laps after the pit stop" said Blundell. "It would have been much more difficult if Alex had been directly behind me on the restart." The traffic gave Blundell the opportunity to re-establish a comfortable margin over Zanardi. But traffic would nearly prove to be Blundell's undoing, as he found himself blocked by the obstinate Hiro Matsushita in the waning laps, enabling Zanardi to close on his gearbox. Blundell was unfazed - a rude gesture to Matsushita aside - and re-established his margin over Zanardi once again before easing off on the final lap to win by less than a second. "We responded," said Blundell. "We got the fastest lap of the race, with a lap at 59.2s, then a 59.5s and a 59.6s, which is great for that stage of the race. When I had to go quick I went quick. When he pushed, we pushed and Alex rarely got close enough to make a move." Zanardi concurred. "I had a feeling the race would come down to the last laps," said Zanardi. "My one hope was that I could put pressure on (Mark) and force him to make a mistake. But the only mistakes Mark made came at a time when I couldn't take advantage of them." Andre Ribeiro finished a delighted third, the Tasman Motorsports driver enjoying a remarkable turn around in fortunes since his team switched from Lola to Reynard chassis at Cleveland. Ribeiro passed a helpless Michael Andretti in the closing laps to give Firestone a 1-2-3 finish, the American driver being the only Goodyear runner in the top eight places. "We got killed on the restarts," said Andretti. "The Firestone tires just took off on the first four laps after a restart. I lost first gear during the yellow doing burns outs to clean my tires." Behind Andretti came a good scrap between Pruett, Gugelmin and Vasser that went to the Brahma Sports team driver, while Gugelmin finished sixth ahead of Vasser with Boesel, Rahal and Paul Tracy rounding out the top ten. Ů│Ţ Next he took Pruett on the entry to Turn Five on Lap Twelve, then Ů│Ţ stalked Rahal for seven laps before repeating his Turn Five handiwork on Ů│Ţ the Miller Reynard on Lap 19. Ů│Ţ "Turn Five is a place where you can usually pass backmarkers if they're Ů│Ţ cooperative," noted Blundell. "But passing a car of equal performance Ů│Ţ there - that's doing something." Trebalo je videti kako je Zanardi obisao Pruetta na tom mestu. Tako nesto zasluzuje da se imenuje 'overtaking of the season', iako jos nije kraj sezone. :) Ů│Ţ "Obviously he's going to say it wasn't his fault," said an unimpressed Ů│Ţ Moore. "It takes a much bigger man to admit it was his fault. I gave him Ů│Ţ plenty of room, but the fact that his left front hit my right rear shows Ů│Ţ I had the line on him." How yes no. Moore je posle nesto pricao o sigurnom petom mestu u najgorem slucaju, da nije doslo do ovog incidenta. Kakva neverovatna laz. Neverovatno je, ustvari, kako on mora da se pravda pred domacom publikom ... ccc ... "I gave him plenty of room" - recenica koja samo potvrdjuje gore navedeno. Zanardi nije imao gde da se skloni. A sa druge strane, Moore je mogao da uspori i da krivinu prodje normalno - na taj nacin bio bi ispred Zanardija i mogao bi da nastavi da se "bori za (u najgorem slucaju) peto mesto". ;) 'Racing accident' i nista vise. Ů│Ţ Meanwhile, Blundell and Zanardi were able to make their second pits Ů│Ţ stops during the full course yellow. Vasser jumped up to ninth place in Ů│Ţ the process, while Blundell emerged in the lead again but now with the Ů│Ţ lapped cars of Fittipaldi, Juan Manuel Fangio, II and P.J. Jones as a Ů│Ţ buffer back to Zanardi. Kakve su ovo gluposti ? Pa incident izmedju Zanardija i Moorea je upravo i izazvao 'full course yellow'! Jedino je Blundell isao u boks za vreme te zute zastave. Zanardi je usao nesto ranije i cim je izasao doslo je do incidenta izmedju njega i Moorea. :)

Grand Prix of Germany Preview Hockenheim, Heidelberg, Germany, 25th - 27th July 1997 by Max Galvin, England For the first time since leaving Benetton at the end of 1995, Michael Schumacher enters a home Grand Prix leading the World Championship. His main title rival Jacques Villeneuve, who won at Silverstone, is looking to get back at the Ferrari driver for his defeat in Canada and beat the German in front of his fans. With these two fighting for the title and many others fighting for their seats, the German Grand Prix should be an interesting one. A lap of Hockenheim Whilst Hockenheim wasn't a popular track in its earlier years, it has become something of an enigma in Formula One. Whilst the cars struggle to reach 180mph on most tracks, here they can stretch their legs and exceed 200mph on four of the tree-lined straights - Damon Hill describes it as being like the bullet in a gun. As the cars pass over the start/finish line, they are doing 180mph in fifth before braking to 120 mph for the Sachs Kurve right-hander. The drivers then have a few moments to relax, or pass an opponent, before braking heavily for the Bremskurve 1. Approaching at 205mph, the cars have to change down four gears and lose 140mph before negotiating this tight chicane. Since the drivers will have removed all unnecessary downforce for the straights, these twisty sections become doubly treacherous and the slightest slide can quickly turn into a bone crunching collision with the armco. The cars pass along another sixth gear straight, brake for another slow chicane, and continue another straight before entering the fast Bremskurve 3. This is one of the quickest chicanes in Formula One, despite it's alterations in recent years, and offers the better drivers a real chance to gain on an opponent before the stadium section. As the cars come out of the forest and enter the final series of turns, they are greeted by the packed grandstands and their fanatical occupants. This set of corners - a fast left hander, a right hand hairpin and a couple of slow right handers - require all of the driver's skill to hold an ill handling car before he engages another lap of this fast and challenging circuit. Circuit Length: 4.239 miles/6.823 km Race length: 45 laps (190.774 miles/307.022 km) What happened last year? Atlas F1 1996 German Grand Prix Review 1996 Race Results 1. Damon Hill (Williams-Renault) 2. Jean Alesi (Benetton-Renault) 3. Jacques Villeneuve (Williams-Renault) 4. Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) 5. David Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes) 6. Rubens Barrichello (Jordan-Peugeot) Pole position: Damon Hill (Williams-Renault) 1m 43.912s Fastest lap : Damon Hill (Williams-Renault) 1m 46.504s The Field Arrows-Yamaha Arrows-Yamaha and their number one driver, Damon Hill, will have breathed a collective sigh of relief at the British GP when they not only finished a race, but also scored their first point of 1997. This will assure their travel benefits for 1998 and will ensure that Damon does not become the first champion to fail to score a point in the defence of their title. Sadly, the down on power Yamaha will cripple the team at Hockenheim and both drivers are likely to retire with engine failures. Damon will surely outqualify Pedro Diniz, but won't be as close to the front as he was at the last race. Rothmans Williams-Renault After a gifted 100th win at Silverstone, Williams really need to get their act together. Neither driver has performed as we have come to expect, and the reliability record has been abysmal. Not all is doom and gloom though, because the chassis is still one of the best out there and with the Renault power at their backs, both drivers should be able to qualify and race right at the front. Heinz-Harald Frentzen has proved to be the turkey of the year so far, and with rumours of his impending demise, will be looking for a good result at his home race to improve his standing in the team. Jacques Villeneuve is without a doubt the top Williams driver these days and will be looking to beat Frentzen again this weekend. He should be capable of this, and is one of the drivers who can reasonably expect to win. Marlboro Scuderia Ferrari Ferrari arrive in Germany after suffering their worst race of 1997 so far. Far from seeing this as bad luck or a fluke, the team have been spurred into action and seem set on ensuring that their cars are the most reliable on the grid. How things change in 12 months! Michael Schumacher should accept nothing better than a win and if one thing is for certain, it is that the fans certainly won't. The Ferrari chassis and engine seem good on high-speed tracks and following a successful test at Monza last week, things look good. Whilst Eddie Irvine is looking very good at the moment, he still looks to be a podium contender, not a winner. That role at Ferrari is reserved for Schumacher and he could well do it. Mild Seven Benetton-Renault Benetton are finally back to their initial line-up, now that Gerhard Berger is race-fit once again. Test times have been promising for both drivers and the team is expecting the car to run well in Germany, so is a win on the cards? Sadly, things don't look that good yet. In terms of sheer speed, the rest of the "Big 5" are above them, but neither driver will give up and podium finishes are likely in this race of attrition. In the intra-team battle, things will more than likely go the way of Jean Alesi who, it has to be said, has been looking much more impressive of late. Gerhard Berger has been close to Alesi in testing, but I would expect his first race back to be slightly off his best pace. West McLaren-Mercedes McLaren again arrive at a race having been within sight of a race win and will be hoping that their luck improves at their engine supplier's home race. The Mercedes is arguably the most powerful engine in F1 today and on a circuit like Hockenheim it is power that matters. Mika Hakkinen had a superb weekend at the British Grand Prix and was robbed of his maiden victory by his second engine failure in as many races. Hockenheim should offer another chance for him to get there, but only if he is faster than his team mate from the off. David Coulthard is still very much a mystery, showing blinding speed and maturity when the car suits him, but producing little when it doesn't. Coulthard usually runs well here, but with Mika looking so confident, it is hard to pick who will be fastest. The McLaren-Mercedes combination is certainly capable of winning, and so are both of the drivers. Benson and Hedges Total Jordan-Peugeot Engine manufacturer Mugen and two new major sponsors have boarded the Jordan train recently, and the future is looking rosy, but when will they win? Both chassis and engine are amongst the best in F1, but Jordan seem unable to capitalise on this. With Ralf Schumacher topping test times at Monza last week, prospects for Hockenheim are good. Of the two drivers I fully expect Ralf to take the lead in both qualifying and the race. Not only is this his first Grand Prix at home, but with Giancarlo Fisichella leaving at the end of the year, the team could be expected to favour their German charge. Still, like McLaren, both drivers are capable of a win given a chance, and Fisichella could pull something special out of the bag and beat Ralf. Gauloises Blondes Prost-Mugen Honda Following a disappointing race in Britain, Alain Prost will be sure to have matters in hand in time for the German Grand Prix. Jarno Trulli has been very impressive in testing at Monza so this could be the chance to get the programme back on track. Shinji Nakano, although slower in qualifying, comprehensibly beat his team mate in the last race, but this looks to have been a one off. Trulli complained that both his first and second sets of tyres in the race were "not right" and immediately ran 2 seconds a lap faster on his final set. Trulli will certainly beat Nakano, but the question is, will he be able to beat drivers outside the team? Red Bull Sauber-Petronas Johnny Herbert is another driver to comprehesively thrash anyone placed against him this season and seems happier than ever at Sauber. The Petronas badged Ferrari engine is certainly powerful enough and the Sauber chassis looks good on high speed tracks so there could be a hope for the Essex driver. With Herbert setting the top time on the second day of the Monza test, the only fly in the ointment is Norberto Fontana, who was almost 3 seconds slower over a single lap than Herbert. The team are clearly counting the days until they can dump the Argentinean driver and get Gianni Morbidelli back, but I can't help but feel like they haven't tried to get the best from Fontana. Back to the overall capabities of the team, a podium could be on the cards if attrition is high. Tyrrell-Ford Low power, low reliability seems to be the best way to describe the Ford v8 that powers the Tyrrell. Mika Salo and Jos Verstappen do their best to drive what appears a great chassis, but with the current evolution Ford at their backs, their best efforts are wasted. Mika set 5th fastest time on the Tuesday of the Monza test and will more than likely be faster than Jos in qualifying. Once again, I expect there to be a reversal in the race, with Verstappen leading the way. Minardi-Hart It is hard to think of new ways to say "Minardi will run at the back", but there seems to be no end in sight for this trend, so I will have to. In Tarso Marques, Ukyo Katayama finally has a team mate he can dominate and he is taking full advantage of this to regain some of his lost credibility. Marques for his part is trying his best but seems out of his depth. So much so in fact, after just 4 laps in an unfamiliar car, former F1 driver Luca Badoer got within 0.2 seconds of his best time at Monza. More power seems to be their only hope, but Hart just cannot provide it on the budget available to them. Stewart-Ford Oh dear what a mess! Silverstone plumbed new depths in the continuing saga of Stewart Grand Prix and their engine problems. Rubens Barrichello suffered 3 engine failures in 3 days and Jan Magnussen ended his race with the 4th. Concentrating on the drivers, Rubens is beating Jan with consumate ease, and the latter appears to have a fight on his hand to retain his seat for next season.

Ovde donekle i jesi u pravu.

Evo ti primer Coultarda i McLarena.

NO MOORE McLAREN? The Toronto paddock was rife with talk that the McLaren F-1 team has designs on Greg Moore for the 1998 season. Moore, however, discounted such talk. "That's funny," he said. "I guess that's why they call this the silly season. There's no truth to that rumor." Apparently there is some truth to another rumor circulating in Toronto, namely that Players/Forsythe owner Gerald Forsythe approached Tony Bettenhausen about buying Patrick Carpentier's contract. "Jerry called to ask about it, but I told him I wasn't interested," said Bettenhausen. Although many were quick to link Forsythe's interest in Carpentier to Moore's supposed departure for McLaren, the more likely scenario is that Players is interested in running a French-Canadian in a second Players/Forsythe car next year as a teammate to Moore. Given the dearth of French-Canadian drivers in the Players pipeline who are likely to be ready to move up to Indy cars in '98, Carpentier is an attractive - but apparently unavailable - option.
