WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES...By Ned Wicker
When the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Team came to Michigan Speedway a year
ago, Jimmy Vasser was licking his chops in anticipation of a repeat
performance. The Target Reynard-Honda loved the superspeedway and Vasser had
four race wins under his belt. He won the U.S. 500 pole and race in May and
was looking forward to doing the same in the Marlboro 500.
A lot has changed since then. For starters, there is no Marlboro 500, but
this weekend is the traditional Marlboro 500 date, only with new name. Another
thing that has changed is Jimmy Vasser's spot atop the PPG Cup leader board.
Vasser is currently in seventh spot, and is his same consistent self, but he
doesn't have the race victories like last year. In the PPG CART World Series,
good doesn't cut it, very good is marginal, excellent is acceptable and some
guys are just plain fantastic. It's not that Vasser isn't having a good
season, it's just that everybody else is that much better this year.
"We are not out of the points, by no means," said Vasser. "We need to have a
great finish at Michigan and need to have a good run. We are sitting seventh
now, not far out of the top five spot, and the top five is very close to the
lead. So, we are certainly in a position to win this championship again, and
that's our focus."
A lot has changed in two months. Although Paul Tracy is leading the current
points, the Penske cars have not been impressive the last couple of weeks, as
neither Tracy nor teammate Al Unser Jr. (eleventh in points) has been able to
come up with a well-balanced car on the road courses. Tracy, had a victories
on the Rio and St. Louis ovals, so the team is hoping that will translate well
to Roger Penske's high banked track this weekend. Tracy had poles at Nazareth
and Milwaukee and should be in the mix at Michigan. The same cannot be said
for Unser, who has been qualifying mid-pack all season.
A year ago, the Honda was making all the power, leaving an improved
Mercedes-Benz and the Ford-Cosworth in its wake. However, the Mercedes cars
have been making tremendous horsepower this year, as evidenced by a dramatic
advantage in straightaway speed. The Ford-Cosworth, likewise, is an improved
engine, making the battled between the top three manufacturers all that much
more interesting.
This year is another race, entirely. Running in the Top 10 traditionally has
been considered a good thing, but in 1997, a look at positions 11-15 reveal
names like Al Unser, Jr., Bryan Herta and Bobby Rahal. Rookie standout Patrick
Carpentier is 15th, so the traditional six or eight cars that were capable of
winning has grown to 12 to 15.
Another point to consider when looking at the competition for this weekend's
race is the tire situation. Goodyear came up with a very good oval tire, but
Firestones continue to thrive in the heat of the summer afternoons. In
Toronto, the Firestones took over, so Goodyear is looking to even the score at
Michigan. Reynard-Honda-Firestone combinations were tops last year, but this
year could tell a completely different story.
Who's Hot:
-- Mark Blundell and the Motorola team have been scoring points and
challenging consistently for the top level of the podium. Victories at
Portland and Toronto have vaulted Blundell into the Top 10.
-- Alex Zanardi is making his way to the top of the standings with the
victory at Cleveland and a second place finish in Toronto. Remember, it was
about this time last year that he really took off.
-- Andre Ribeiro, last year's Marlboro 500 winner, has the Reynard and a new
lease on life in 1997. He was a competitive third at Toronto, but has
something to prove this weekend.
Who's Not:
-- Parker Johnstone continues to struggle in the KOOL Reynard-Honda. There
seems to be a cooling off of the driver/team relationship there, as rumors
persist that Robby Gordon is a consideration for 1998. KOOL is also
considering sponsorship for another Team KOOL Green entry next year, so this
gang might have an all new look.
-- The #34 Payton-Coyne entry was a sled at Cleveland and it was a sled again
at Toronto. This was the entry that finished third in last year's U.S. 500,
but without driver Roberto Moreno, it isn't a happy car.
NEWS...NEWS...NEWS...
PENSKE MOTORSPORTS AND INT'L SPEEDWAY CORP INVEST IN HOMESTEAD
Penske Motorsports, Inc. and International Speedway Corporation have each
acquired 40 percent shares of the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex,
giving the two racing giants controlling interest in the facility.
The remaining 20 percent is owned by founder Ralph Sanchez and partner Wayne
Huizenga. Each have 10 percent ownership interest.
Recently the track underwent an $8.2 million renovation, transforming the
original quad-oval into a symmetrical oval. The move was made to improve the
competitiveness of the shows.
For Roger Penske, the move was his second major purchase in recent months,
as he also obtained controlling interest in the North Carolina Motor Speedway
(Rockingham), prompting speculation that CART may have a new home in the deep
south in the next couple of years.
"With the addition of Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, PMI now has
interest in five major auto racing facilities in the country," said Penske.
"With the opening of the California Speedway outside Los Angeles and the
addition of the beautiful facility near Miami, we are positioned in two of the
country's fastest growing and most prestigious markets."
Likewise, Bill France has been busy, as he has also recently purchased the
Phoenix International Raceway.
"In less than two months, ISC has entered into track ownership in two of
America's most exciting and fastest growing markets, as well as acquiring 100
percent ownership of a famed road course racing facility in Watkins Glen.,"
said France.
LOLA RE-ORGANIZES
A group consisting of Lola's current management and senior engineers has
made an offer to refinance Lola Cars Ltd. The offer was accepted by the
administrator of Lola Cars, Peter Dunn of accountants Latham Crossely and
Davis. Chairman of the new ownership group (which does not include Lola
founder Eric Broadley) will be Michael Davies, chairman of National Express
Group plc and Simon Engineering plc.
According to Dunn, the refinancing bid is expected to be concluded within
four weeks.
NO MOORE McLAREN?
The Toronto paddock was rife with talk that the McLaren F-1 team has
designs on Greg Moore for the 1998 season. Moore, however, discounted such
talk.
"That's funny," he said. "I guess that's why they call this the silly
season. There's no truth to that rumor."
Apparently there is some truth to another rumor circulating in Toronto,
namely that Players/Forsythe owner Gerald Forsythe approached Tony
Bettenhausen about buying Patrick Carpentier's contract.
"Jerry called to ask about it, but I told him I wasn't interested," said
Bettenhausen.
Although many were quick to link Forsythe's interest in Carpentier to
Moore's supposed departure for McLaren, the more likely scenario is that
Players is interested in running a French-Canadian in a second
Players/Forsythe car next year as a teammate to Moore. Given the dearth of
French-Canadian drivers in the Players pipeline who are likely to be ready to
move up to Indy cars in '98, Carpentier is an attractive - but apparently
unavailable - option.
TWO KOOL?
A decision is expected to be forthcoming by the end of July as to whether
or not KOOL will back a second Indy car for Team KOOL Green in 1998.
SERIES CO-SPONSOR IN THE OFFING
In an interview in the June '97 issue of "Indy Car Magazine," CART
president and CEO Andrew Craig said that negotiations were underway to bring a
new sponsor on board to augment PPG's support for the series.
"We may have an announcement as early as June," said Craig, "but if you
don't hear anything in June then we've bombed."
Craig's timing may have been off by a month or two. Executives representing
a well-known, multi-national corporation believed to be interested in
co-sponsoring the PPG CART World Series as early as 1998 were on hand at the
Toronto Molson Indy.
TORONTO SUCCESS
Three days of beautiful weather - and quite probably the well publicized
successes of Canadian drivers Paul Tracy, Greg Moore and Patrick Carpentier -
helped boost attendance to record levels at the Toronto Molson Indy. After the
second highest attendance in the history of the event on Friday, the Saturday
and Sunday gates set new records and brought the three day total to 164,406,
the highest in the event's 12 year history, surpassing last year's record of
163,019.
BLUNDELL AND PACWEST ON A ROLL
With his victory in the Toronto Molson Indy, Mark Blundell made it two out
of the past three races, having earlier won the Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at
Portland. For want of a splash of fuel at Detroit, Blundell would have won
three of the past four races.
Clearly, though, Toronto was his most complete performance since joining the
PacWest Racing Group last year. Second fastest in both qualifying sessions,
Blundell took the lead as the result of the first corner incident between
pole-sitter Dario Franchitti and Bobby Rahal. Not only did he lead the rest of
the way - a couple of laps on pit stops excepted - he withstood intense
pressure from the man who has arguably been the fastest driver in Indy car
racing over the past 12 months - Alex Zanardi. Indeed, Blundell had an answer
for Zanardi every time the Italian got within striking distance, able to
quickly move out to a 2.5s lead seemingly at will.
"The whole PacWest team earned this one," said Blundell. "We led just a
little of the last one (Portland) but we got this one fair and square. This is
one of the greatest moments of my career. We had a car that was simply the
fastest one out there. I didn't want to change a thing all day. My guys gave
me great pit stops, and other than a couple of backmarkers who didn't want to
get out of the way, it was a perfect day."
Blundell's surge is something of a surprise in that from the start of the
season it appeared as though Mauricio Gugelmin would be the man to bring
PacWest its first victory. But Gugelmin was not been able to take advantage of
his early season form and has been somewhat adrift of Blundell's pace the past
couple of weekends, in part because he was running some development suspension
bits on his Reynard/Merc at Cleveland and on Friday at Toronto that hindered
rather than helped his cause.
Although he set the fastest time in Saturday's practice, he was only able to
post tenth fastest time in qualifying. Sunday saw him lose a spot as the
result of the Turn One scuffle, but eventually drive to solid race to recover
to sixth spot at the finish.
"It was a pretty straightforward day," said Gugelmin. "I lost a spot in the
first turn and it was hard work getting positions after that. The car was
pretty good, but not perfect. I made a few passes, but it's a difficult
circuit to pass on. I was getting held up, so I asked to make my second pit
stop a bit early and we got by a couple more cars as a result and finished
sixth. I'm happy for my teammate at the PacWest team, but I hope next time
it's going to be me."
PENSKES STRUGGLE
Marlboro Penske's indifferent street circuit form continued as Toronto, as
evinced by the fact that Paul Tracy finished tenth and Al Unser, Jr. 20th,
albeit after a losing a couple of laps replacing a left front tie rod after a
Turn One barging match with Gualter Salles on Lap 28. The basic problems are
two or three fold. First, the PC26 does not generate sufficient grip in
qualifying trim on light fuel loads, which forces Tracy and Unser to start
from mid-field or so. Second, it's becoming something of a clichÚ but it's
true: the CART series has become so competitive that the days when drivers of
the caliber of Tracy and Unser could expect to charge to the front from poor
qualifying spots are long gone.
A look at the finishing order underscores the fact that Firestone trounced
Goodyear at Toronto. Seven of the top eight finishers were on Firestones
(fourth placed Michael Andretti was the sole Goodyear representative). In
terms of fastest laps, Firestone enjoyed an even greater edge, with Andretti
(6th) and Christian Fittipaldi (7th) the only Goodyear drivers in the top ten.
As for Marlboro Penske, Tracy was 12th on the fastest lap chart, while Unser
was 21st. Where Mark Blundell turned a 59.185s lap on the way to his second
win in three races, Tracy's best was a 60.644 and Unser's a 61.251.
TASMAN REVIVAL
Toronto marked a welcome reversal of fortunes for the Tasman Motorsports
Group. Not only did Andre Ribeiro earn the team's first podium finish of 1997,
but Helio-Castro Neves and Tony Kanaan finished 1-2 in the Indy Lights race
and Neil Crompton finished 2-1 in the twin Super Touring races.
Tasman's strong Indy Lights showing is not exactly news. Not only was this
the team's third 1-2 finish of the season, Castro-Neves is threatening to make
a runaway of the PPG Firestone Indy Lights Championship while Kanaan is a
solid second in the points.
Small wonder Tasman's Indy Lights group has been known as "the happy team"
for most of the season...especially given the trials and tribulations
experienced by the Indy car team in its efforts to come to grips with the Lola
T97/00 chassis.
The acquisition of an ex-Gil de Ferran Reynard for Ribeiro in time for the
Cleveland race gave the team a welcome boost, even if they finished just out
of the points when several gremlins set-in over the final laps. At Toronto,
however, Ribeiro was right on the pace most of the weekend - he was the
defending pole winner, after all - and came home a solid third.
Meanwhile, defending race winner Adrian Fernandez eventually abandoned the
primary Lola T97/00 and its various updates in favor of his bog-stock back-up
chassis and drove to a steady - if circumspect - 14th place.
"It has been a great 'team' weekend," said Tasman's Steve Horne. "Andre
drove a great race. We talked a lot about focus and he was very focused.
Adrian drove the wheels off the Lola for 14th place. We had tremendous
finishes in Indy Lights and Touring cars. I will remember for this weekend for
a while."

U pravu si, cetvrto mesto na kvalifikacijama nije toliko dobro koliko smo

US500 Race Results
July 27, 1997
THIRD TIME'S A CHARM
By David Phillips
It took three tries, but Alex Zanardi finally made it to the finish of a 500
mile race at Michigan Speedway. And he did it in fine style, scoring his third
win of the 1997 PPG CART World Series in a U.S. 500 that began at a blistering
pace but which finished as a processional race of attrition.
Some three hours after front-row mates Mauricio Gugelmin and Scott Pruett
led 28 starters to the green flag, Zanardi took the checkered flag nearly a
lap clear of Mark Blundell, the only other driver to go the distance in a race
that featured several grinding crashes and a rash of transmission failures.
"You always need to be lucky to win a 500 mile race," said Zanardi, who last
year blew an engine while leading the U.S. 500 and crashed while leading the
Michigan 500. "I was obviously taking care of my equipment. I guess other
people were doing the same thing and yet they didn't finish. Other people
threw their equipment in the wall, which is not a good idea. I'm obviously
pleased my equipment held up until the end."
Zanardi used a familiar method in coming to the front, repeating his
exploits of a few weeks back in Cleveland by rebounding from an early penalty
that dropped him to the back of the field. In contrast to Cleveland, where he
marched smartly through the field, at Michigan he found his understeering
Reynard-Honda in danger of going a lap down to the flying Andre Ribeiro's
similar machine.
Ribeiro had started ninth but pitted early during a caution caused when P.J.
Jones's Toyota engine blew-up in spectacular fashion on Lap 11. Ribeiro
dropped to the back of the lead lap, but took over first place when the
leaders - Gugelmin, Pruett, Michael Andretti, Raul Boesel, Parker Johnstone
and Zanardi - pitted on Lap 36 under the second caution of the day - this for
debris. During the pit stop, Zanardi ran over teammate Jimmy Vasser's air hose
and was assessed a pit lane "drive through" penalty after the restart that
dropped him to twentieth.
"When I entered my pit box I kind of realized I was too fast; then I
realized I was in Jimmy's pit box, which was a terrible mistake that could
have cost me the race," said Zanardi.
"I thought 'OK, I'm going to get a penalty' but I had to run over the air
hose of Jimmy (to get to my pit). While I was going to do that, his mechanic
took his (air) gun up to let me go underneath. He thought that if I wouldn't
touch that thing at all they wouldn't even penalize me. He did good, but
unfortunately it got stuck in my front wing and his gun hit my sidepod and it
was a big mess."
Ribeiro subsequently took off like a scalded cat, lapping at 230 mph+ and
drawing away from his pursuers, now headed by Andretti with Gugelmin, Pruett
and Patrick Carpentier in tow. Ribeiro was preparing to lap Zanardi when
Johnstone hammered the Turn Two wall after cutting a tire, causing the day's
third caution period. Zanardi pitted under the yellow, effected some changes
to his chassis set-up and rejoined in sixth spot.
"I think I was lucky when the yellow came because I was about to be lapped
by Ribeiro," said Zanardi. "Ribeiro at that point was putting a terrible pace.
Nobody could keep up with him, and I was a little bit in trouble with the car.
Then later on we made some adjustments and the car became much, much better.
But at that point I couldn't run even close to the kind of speed that Ribeiro
was doing. So if he would have put me a lap down we would have had to take
some risks along the yellows in order to get that lap back. But the yellow
came just in time."
Ribeiro, however, ceased to be a factor when he and Vasser both retired with
broken transmissions after pitting during the clean-up of Johnstone's accident.
"We definitely had a fantastic car," said Ribeiro, "but something happened
with the gearbox. When the yellow came out, I tried to downshift and only had
fifth gear. Then that went."
The Brahma Sport Reynard-Fords of Pruett and Boesel did not pit and so took
over the lead from Andretti, Rahal and Al Unser, Jr. who was finding the
Marlboro Penske-Mercedes an altogether more potent combination in race trim
than it had been in qualifying.
Andretti was also a potent force on race day after boost problems left him
19th on the grid. It took him six laps after the Lap 65 restart to catch and
pass Boesel. Two laps later he was on Pruett's tail looking for the lead. But
Pruett was not about to give way without a fight and the two ran nose to tail
and side-by-side for a couple of laps before Andretti boxed-in Pruett behind
the lapped car of Arnd Meier at the conclusion of Lap 75 and took the lead
heading into Turn One.
Andretti immediately began pulling free, but his lead would be short lived.
On Lap 79 the Kmart/Texaco Swift belched a puff of smoke and Andretti's
gearbox was through.
"The car was perfect. Flawless," said Andretti. "We really deserved the win.
From 19th to first, and then to have this happen. We could have probably
lapped the field by the end of the race. It was a walk in the park from the
first lap. The car was that good."
The attrition continued to mount at an alarming rate. Gugelmin coasted into
the pits with electrical problems and lost four laps while the PacWest team
made repairs. Unser was next to go, blowing an engine on Lap 97. Four laps
later Franchitti pulled into the pits for routine servicing, never to rejoin
the race.
"Dario came in and everything was fine," said Hogan general manager Doug
Peterson. "Then he went to leave and the transmission started making awful
noises and was it.
"There's nothing but a bunch of junk inside the transmission now, so we'll
have to do a post-mortem on it to see what went wrong. Whether this is the
same thing that happened at Gateway, I can't say. But when so many cars go out
with the same problem you can't say it's an assembly problem. There's
obviously a weak link somewhere in the gearbox that shows up at tracks where
there is high g-loading. First Gateway, now Michigan."
"My team kept me informed about the transmission problems," said Blundell,
who had patiently moved up to the top five. "Basically what we did, we took it
easy on the transmission downshifting coming into the pits. We even
short-shifted somewhat going out of the pits, although you have to be a little
careful because the gearing is so long here it gives the transmission a bit of
a thump.
"So we were aware of it and we tried to drive accordingly. There's only so
much you can do on oval in terms of gearshifts. So if the gearbox goes, it
goes, so you try and take care of it while you're out there."
Boesel would join the growing list of retirees when his gearbox failed
during a pit stop on Lap 120, while Carpentier was destined to fall out -
while leading - when electrical gremlins struck the Alumax Reynard-Mercedes,
while Christian Fittipaldi's horrific luck continued when he lost a wheel
following a pit stop on Lap 128.
Not all the attrition was mechanical. Bobby Rahal looked a likely winner,
leading handily from Lap 94 to 118, before giving way to Zanardi. But the
veteran bobbled in traffic in Turn Two and crashed heavily, escaping with a
bruised right hip.
"I was trying to pass (Dennis) Vitolo and I went to the outside to go around
him," said Rahal. "But he just kept putting me higher and higher on the track
and I hit the marbles."
Forty-eight laps later, Pruett exited the race in similar fashion, clouting
the much abused Turn Two wall on Lap 174. Blundell, for one, pointed the
finger at the reductions in downforce mandated by CART in an effort to limit
speeds.
"To be perfectly honest, there is no way that the car was as stable as what
we had last year at both the Michigan races," he said. "We could place the car
wherever we wanted to place it and it stuck to the road and we were there.
Once it was hooked-up we were away. Today was very tricky. Traffic was very
hard. Even coming by a backmarker you really had to be in a strong position on
the road to make sure you could just get up on top of him and get by him. I
think those accidents were caused, probably, by some problems with the balance
in the cars."
The carnage and mechanical retirements left Zanardi leading handily from
Blundell with Paul Tracy an unlikely third, having qualified a dispirited
18th. Gil de Ferran had a quietly eventful afternoon, incurring an early
penalty for a pit lane violation on his first stop, then fighting persistent
understeer throughout the day. Nevertheless, he'd managed to stay on the lead
lap and now ran fourth, while Bryan Herta was fifth, having lost a lap when he
stalled on a pit stop on Lap 165 while lying fourth.
The attrition may have made for a lot of empty space on the track, but it
certainly helped Gugelmin in his efforts to recover from his early problems as
he charged back into the top six. It was also a boon to the likes of Dennis
Vitolo and the Toyota- powered cars of Max Papis, Hiro Matsushita and Juan
Fangio, II, who slowly but surely worked their respective ways into the
rarefied air of the Top Ten.
As the final round of pit stops approached, Zanardi enjoyed a five second
lead on Blundell, with Tracy and de Ferran the only other unlapped drivers.
The final stop saw Blundell stall, and drop the best part of a lap down to
Zanardi. To make matters worse, he was forced to take on a set of Firestone's
harder option tires as he was clean out of the softer primaries.
"I just kind of cruised to the finish make sure of the points," said
Blundell. "At the end of the race I got a lot of pickup on the tires, which
gave me a high frequency vibration and my left hand fell asleep..."
Zanardi's only concerns were the usual worries experienced by a driver with
nothing between him and victory but a few final laps.
"I was a bit concerned especially after what happened last year in the U.S.
500," said Zanardi. "I was also concerned with what happened at the Marlboro
500! That was really up to me to avoid that kind of problem."
De Ferran, however, finally got his Reynard working in the final going and
took off in pursuit of Tracy, catching and passing the Penske driver for third
place with just nine laps remaining.
"As the race went along the handling got better and better," said de Ferran.
"The crew was absolutely faultless on the pit stops, there was not one glitch.
(Race engineer) Bill Pappas kept changing the tire pressures and we kept
putting-in more and more and more wing...We put in ten turns of front wing
over the course of the race. You have no idea how much that is. But in the
final two stints we finally got the car working."
A stoical Tracy was satisfied if not delighted with his fourth place finish.
"We wanted to score points," he said. "The car wasn't great, but it was good
enough for fourth and that's better than fifth or sixth. We had a pretty
steady push all day and on the last stop we made a change that made it push
more, so I couldn't hold off de Ferran. We did all we could do, we just got a
little too conservative for the last few laps."
After qualifying a lackluster 18th, Tracy had every reason to be pleased by
his fourth place run. Nevertheless, Zanardi moved into the PPG points lead
with his second win in three weeks and now looks to the remainder of the
season where his form only figures to get stronger.
"If I tell you that I'm happy right now I'm not going to surprise you," said
Zanardi. "Obviously the championship is not like a fixed goal. It is not
something that I want very, very badly. I know there is a lot of factors that
could work on our favor or could work against us. Sure enough I'm confident. I
now that we are strong enough to play our role and be one of the main
contenders for the title. I have no doubt about that.
"But I think we've got to concentrate on every single event; try to get the
most out of it. The opposition is so strong. These guys are so strong that you
cannot rely on a good result on a Sunday afternoon and say 'Yeah I'm gonna win
the championship.'
"It's too early. Three races ago I was thirty points behind. Now I'm ahead,
so obviously I can't complain. But I know that it's not over and anything can
happen in less than two weekends."

CART Auto Racing Roars Into Downtown Houston for 1998 Texaco Grand Prix
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CART Online (July 29, 1997) -- The City of Houston, Texaco, Inc. and
Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) have agreed in principle to stage a
mojor international auto race, The Texaco Grand Prix of Houston, on the
streets of downtown Houston beginning Oct. 4, 1998. The agreement calls for
the race to be held annually through the year 2003.
Anchored by the George R. Brown Convention Center, downtown Houston will be
the setting of this exciting, premier grand prix and a series of support
races. The race will be sanctioned by CART, an open-wheel Indy car series
featuring 900-horsepower cars capable of speeds in excess of 230 miles per
hour.
The 1.68-mile street course will have 10 turns & traveling in front of the
Convention Center on Chenevert and as far out as Clay, Austin and Capitol
streets. This location provides an ideal backdrop to showcase the city for an
international television audience in 188 countries, while minimizing traffic
flow disruptions.
Management of the event will be under the auspices of Texaco Houston Grand
Prix LLC, a joint venture between Texaco, Inc. and Carl Haas. In addition to
The Texaco Grand Prix of Houston, Haas is the race organizer at the historic
Milwaukee (Wis.) Mile, and is an owner/director of Road America in Elkhart
Lake, Wis.
Houston Mayor Bob Lanier said, "Houston's stunning skyline and the George R.
Brown Convention Center will be fantastic backdrops for this premier race. The
television exposure will help drive home the improvements Houston has made in
downtown revitalization. I appreciate the efforts of Texaco and the
Newman/Haas organization to bring this great event to Houston in first-class
style."
Glenn F. Tilton, Senior Vice President of Texaco, Inc. and President of
Texaco's Global Business Unit, said, "Texaco is proud to sponsor this premier
event in the City of Houston. It lets us give something back to a community
that has been important to our company and home to many Texaco employees for
decades. Partnering with Carl Haas on this project will ensure that the Grand
Prix exceeds everyone's expectations."
Carl Haas said, "Houston will be one of the finest city street race layouts
ever. The natural boundaries formed by the George R. Brown Convention Center
and City Skyline, combined with the wide streets and park settings inside the
circuit, will create a unique ambiance and atmosphere, as well as provide a
layout for competitive racing."
CART will state a total of 19 races on four continents in 1998 & a mix of oval
tracks, road circuits and street courses & in its PPG CART World Series. In
addition to Houston, street races will be held in Detroit; Long Beach, Calif.;
Toronto and Vancouver, Canada; and Queensland, Australia.
Andrew Craig, President and Chief Executive Officer of CART, said "Houston is
the type of market we desire to compete in on an annual basis; it's a
world-class city and our series is truly international in scope. Twelve
countries, encompassing five continents, are represented in our owner and
driver ranks. This meshes well within the cultural diversity of a multi-ethnic
city like Houston. I believe this event has the potential to quickly become
one of our premier venues."
In addition to the CART Indy car race, The Texaco Grand Prix of Houston will
feature several support events. Also planned for the week leading up to the
race are a pro-am style golf tournament and a charity ball, among other
activities.
The George R. Brown Convention Center will serve as headquarters for the
event. All competing teams will be paddocked on the Center's 375,000 square
foot first level. The upper levels of the Convention Center will house
everything from race control and a media center to VIP hospitality
accomodations. Pit lane of the race circuit will be constructed directly in
front of the center.
The agreement in principle between the City of Houston and Texaco Houston
Grand Prix LLC to hold the event is subject to final contract terms and City
Council approval.
Tickets to the event will go on sale soon. The organizers also expect to open
a sales office in downtown Houston in the near future. For information
regarding tickets, corporate hospitality and sponsorship, call (281) 820-8378.

Rahal Trys Some New Courses
CART Online (July 31) -- Bobby Rahal's race day came to an early end at the
U.S. 500, Sunday, July 27, when his Miller Lite Reynard Ford made contact with
Michigan Speedway's Turn 2 wall while Rahal he running second in the U.S. 500
Presented by Toyota.
But the bruised right hip and left knee Rahal sustained in the incident
couldn't keep him from traveling to Scotland for a whirlwind golf vacation.
Rahal, a nine handicap, was scheduled to play five legendary United Kingdom
courses in five days, beginning this past Monday at Royal Troon, site of this
year's British Open. A round at Western Gails was scheduled for Tuesday,
followed by rounds at Preswick (Wednesday), Muirfield (Thursday) and St.
Andrew's (Friday). "It's going to take a lot more than that [the crash] to
keep me from playing those courses this week," Rahal said.
"We might even get in a round at Loch Lomond if time permits. This trip is
something I've wanted to do for a long time. I've talked about taking trips to
legendary courses around the world when I retire from driving. Well, I'm not
retiring from driving, but this is a trip I couldn't pass up."

F1: German GP winners' press conference
Q. Congratulations, Gerhard, on a memorable victory.
Hockenheim seems to be a special circuit for you,
doesn't it?
GB: I seem to have been given some special powers today,
but I think I know where that comes from and I am very
happy about it.
Q. What did you feel when you came out of the pits after
your second pit stop and saw Fisichella in front of you?
GB: I nearly lost the race because someone had blown his
engine on the straight and it was so foggy that I could
not see the road anymore. I almost had to stop the car,
which cost me four or five seconds. At that point I
honestly believed that I had lost the race. I was quite
surprised that we were so close, it was only about one
second, and then Giancarlo made a mistake in the second
chicane. That allowed me to overtake him straightaway.
Everything worked together.
Q. In addition to victory, you got pole position and
fastest race lap today. Does this mean a revival in
Benetton fortunes at last?
GB: Obviously it shows what potential we have. We have
had potential since the beginning of the season, but for
different reasons we have not been able to use it in the
right way. Hockenheim is the sort of circuit where we
know we can be competitive and quick, but the next
circuit on the schedule has completely different
characteristics. I am very interested to see how we go
there. One thing which I believe is that we are going
to be competitive at the end of the season, but of
course we were not in close competition with anyone
today: I started from pole, we had the right strategy
and I had a good start. Everything worked together and
we ended up in front. That is no reason to believe we
are ahead, although I think we are competitive and we
have a good chance to compete for points and podium
places at the end of the season.
Q. Michael, your second place seems to have pleased the
home crowd. How did the race go for you?
MS: I could not have hoped for better and after what
happened in practice I am very pleased. I had to do an
extra pit stop, due to what seem to have been some
problems with the fuel rig, plus I was missing fifth
gear from halfway through the race. It wasn't very easy
to run the race like this.
Q. With Mika so close behind you in those last few laps,
how worried were you that he might pass?
MS: Obviously we knew that we had to cope with our
various problems, and I had to come in for an extra pit
stop, so I had to push very hard. My problem at that
stage was that I had been behind Alesi for quite a while
and my tyres were finished, I had damaged them more than
I would normally have done. So it was difficult to pull
out the gap at the end which would be enough to come in
ahead of Mika.
Q. It must have been a relief to you that Jacques
Villeneuve didn't finish today. How did you learn about
that?
MS: At the end of the race I asked for information about
who had finished in the first six places. I was told
that Villeneuve was out of the race. I have to say that
I would not like to win the championship because
somebody has fallen out of the race, I prefer to fight
and beat someone. But we have been quicker [than
Williams] all weekend and at this point I would like to
congratulate Gerhard on his impressive comeback. For
the championship, though, things are going well.
Q. Mika, this is your first podium finish since
Melbourne. Are you surprised to be here?
MH: No, not really surprised here. But it is certainly
a long time since Melbourne and my last podium finish.
There are various reasons why I haven't been here
recently, so let's hope that I will be able to visit you
here more often in the future.
Q. Once again, you only made one pit stop today while
both the guys in front of you were on a twostop
strategy. Should you have done the same as them?
MH: I was in a situation where a two stop strategy might
not have worked. When you are on the front row, and
leading at the first corner, two stops will help a lot.
If you are not in that situation, though, two stops is
the wrong choice. That's why we chose to make one stop.
Q. Gerhard, what are your plans before you go to the
Hungaroring for the next race?
GB: I will be testing at Silverstone this week, and I
have to do some more fitness training. I have to catch
up with my fitness because Hungary is a very hard
circuit physically and it is usually very hot there. I
am really looking forward to it because I like the
circuit very much.

TEXACO GRAND PRIX OF HOUSTON ANNOUNCED
The City of Houston and CART announced today that they have agreed in
principle to stage the Texaco Grand Prix of Houston on the weekend of October
4, 1998, subject to final approval by the Houston city council. The race,
which will be held on a 10 turn, 1.68 mile street circuit near the George R.
Brown Convention Center, will be held annually through the year 2003.
PMI and ISC ACQUIRE HOMESTEAD
Penske Motorsports, Inc. (PMI) and the International Speedway (ISC)
Corporation have each purchased a 40% interest in Homestead-Miami Speedway,
L.L.C., the operators of Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex in the
latest round of the race track acquisition spree sweeping the land. Ralph
Sanchez, founder of the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex and partner
Wayne Huizenga each will retain a 10% ownership in the facility, and Sanchez
will continue as president of the track,
Little more than a week ago, ISC purchased Phoenix International Raceway not
long after acquiring 100% interest in Watkins Glen International.
PMI's tracks now include Nazareth and Michigan Speedways as well as the
recently opened California Speedway. PMI also recently acquired controlling
interest in North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina. In
addition to Watkins Glen and Homestead, ISC's holdings include the Daytona
International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Darlington Raceway and Tucson
Raceway Park, as well as an 11% interest in PMI.
Speculation is widespread that PMI's Roger Penske and ISC's Bill France are
forming a loose alliance to counter the growing interests of rivals
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indy Racing League president Tony George,
whose family owns IMS and is also involved in Walt Disney Speedway and the new
Pike's Peak International Raceway, and Bruton Smith whose tracks include
Atlanta, Charlotte and the new Texas World Speedway and Las Vegas Motor
Speedway and who is widely believed to be planning to form a break-away stock
car series inc competition to NASCAR's Winston Cup series.
CRAIG DISCOUNTS ROAD ATLANTA RUMORS
At the U.S. 500 CART president and CEO Andrew Craig threw cold water on the
widespread speculation that Championship Auto Racing Teams is planning a races
at Road Atlanta, Mexico City and several other new venues in the near future.
"We went down to inspect Road Atlanta recently," he said. "It's an exciting
track but the facility needs a substantial amount investment before we would
consider staging a race there. Having said that, the track now has first rate
ownership in Don Panoz and he has the resources to make Road Atlanta into a
first rate facility. Atlanta is an attractive market for CART and my
preference for a race in the Southeast would be a road course or street
circuit.
"But I would put Road Atlanta in the same category as several other tracks -
Mexico City, Germany, Phoenix and couple of others. They are attractive to
CART for a number of reasons and it may well be that we will hold races there
in the future. But a lot of things will have to happen before we can talk
seriously about staging races at those locations."
Craig was cool to the idea of a CART race at North Carolina Motor Speedway
(aka Rockingham) despite the fact that CART co- founder Roger Penske's Penske
Motorsports Inc. has acquired 70% ownership in the track.
JOHNSTONE'S LUCKY DAY
Parker Johnstone was lucky to escape from his crash in the U.S. 500 with
nothing more than a bad bruising and a major lump on his forehead, the result
of a chunk of suspension penetrating his helmet.
"It's a testimony to CART's safety and rules committee, and to Reynard for
building such a great car, that I was able to jump out of the car," said
Johnstone. "I also have to credit Bell helmets, because when I crashed the
right side suspension came back at me in its entirety and hit the helmet on
the left front side."
MEA CULPA
Speaking of Johnstone's accident, although it was initially thought to have
been caused by a cut tire, Team KOOL Green owner Barry Green has issued a
statement absolving Firestone of responsibility for the crash.
"Immediately following the incident involving the Team KOOL Green
Reynard-Honda in Sunday's U.S. 500, I cited a cut right front tire as the
cause of the accident," said Green. "After the race, Firestone technicians and
our team manager, Kyle Moyer, examined the right front tire in detail and
found the tire completely intact. I have since inspected the tire personally.
The tread and the sidewalls are scuffed as the result of the tire's impact
with the Turn Two wall at a speed in excess of 200 mph, but it is clear the
tire did not come apart.
"I regret the statements I made Sunday afternoon in which I said the right
front tire came apart and caused the accident. Unfortunately, I made those
statements before Firestone and our team had the opportunity to thoroughly
inspect the tire. It was a very emotional time, when we were all concerned
about Parker's physical condition and had just experienced the disappointment
of crashing in a race which we could have won.
"Team KOOL Green continues to have the utmost confidence in Firestone's
ability to produce tires that are competitive, consistent and, above all, safe
and durable. Firestone, Reynard, CART and Team KOOL Green will continue to
investigate the circumstances surrounding Sunday's incident in an effort to
determine the cause of the crash.
"In the meantime, we are extremely thankful that Parker Johnstone was not
seriously injured in the accident."
DELLA PENNA'S REYNARD
Della Penna Motorsports is the latest Lola team to acquire a Reynard in the
hopes of boosting getting some results for driver Richie Hearn. Team owner
John Della Penna has been hard at work serching for a Reynard for some time
now and thought his problems were solved when PacWest offered to help him
cobble together a car based on a '97 chassis and gearbox, with Reynard
supplying the suspension bits. However Sunday's carnage at Michigan, in which
regular Reynard customers Brahma Sports Team, Team Rahal and Team KOOL Green
heavily damaged their cars put the squeeze on the Reynard parts department and
effectively killed that deal.
Della Penna has since turned to Gerald Davis and acquired the Reynard 96I
with which Davis Racing began the season at Homestead and which already has
the requisite installation for a '97 spec Ford Cosworth XD. Della Penna plans
to bring the car to the Miller 200 at Mid-Ohio as the team's primary car, with
a Lola T97/00 with a revised undertray as the spare.
"I really feel for Lola, but I've got to do what I can do to produce some
results," said Della Penna. "My first loyalty has got to be to my team and to
Richie. Richie deserves better than what we've been able to do for his this
year, and so does the crew. So we plan to go to Mid-Ohio with the Reynard as
the primary car and the Lola as a back-up. I want to take the two best cars we
own."
VASSER'S DNF
Jimmy Vasser was one of six drivers to drop out of the U.S. 500 with
transmission problems. Vasser's dnf marked the first time since the 1995
Vancouver race that he had dropped out of a CART race with mechanical
problems. Earlier this season at Detroit, Vasser and the Target/Ganassi team
tied a CART record 25 straight finishes before the PPG Cup champion was
knocked out of the Portland race in a late coming-together with Parker
Johnstone.
PACWEST'S MICHIGAN RECORD
With Mark Blundell running all 250 laps to finish second in the U.S. 500 and
teammate Mauricio Gugelmin finishing 244 laps and taking sixth place, the
PacWest Racing Group have now completed 2982 of 3000 miles in the last three
500 mile races at Michigan Speedway. Last year Gugelmin finished second in the
U.S. 500 and third at the Marlboro 500, running the full 500 miles each time,
while Blundell was fifth in the U.S. 500, one lap down, and sixth in the
Marlboro 500, two laps down.
GORDON ON THE PROWL
Robby Gordon was much in evidence at the U.S. 500, spending every free
moment away from his IROC commitments to meet and talk with CART owners past
and possibly future. Gordon lunched with Team KOOL Green owner Barry Green on
Saturday and was seen talking with former bosses Derrick Walker and Chip
Ganassi among others.
Gordon, of course, was close to a deal with Green last year before his 11th
hour switch to the Sabco NASCAR team and most speculation centers on a
possible linkage between Gordon and Team KOOL Green, either in a second car or
as a replacement for Parker Johnstone who has had a disappointing 1997 season.
1996 PPG Cup winner Jimmy Vasser was widely thought to be in the running for
a Team KOOL Green ride in 1998, but it now appears as though Chip Ganassi will
exercise his option on Vasser's services next year. Indeed, Vasser hinted as
much during a television interview shortly after his departure from the U.S.
500.
Meanwhile, one of the more intriguing scenarios to surface at Michigan
suggests that an existing two car team is at least pondering the possibility
of spinning-off a satellite operation based around the talented, but
mercurial, Gordon.
NEARBURG RIDES AGAIN
Charlie Nearburg, over his head in his CART debut at Cleveland in the
Payton-Coyne Lola-Ford, will get a second chance at Mid-Ohio. At least
Nearburg will have a Reynard to work with this time, Payton-Coyne having
acquired Davis Racing's back-up Reynard for the remainder of the season. With
Reynards at a premium, it's a shame Nearburg - not the long-suffering Adrian
Fernandez or Richie Hearn - got one of the last ones available.

ZANARDI POISED TO EXTEND POINT LEAD AT MID-OHIO
By Nathan Siebens
Alex Zanardi, who took over the PPG Cup point lead with his win at the U.S.
500, will be looking to extend that lead this weekend when the PPG CART World
Series returns to action in the Miller 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Zanardi went on a tear in the July races, winning at Cleveland and finishing
second in Toronto before taking the point lead with his win a Michigan. He has
certainly emerged as the odds-on favorite to win the PPG Cup judging from his
1996 performance at the remaining events on the schedule. Likewise, he is the
favorite to win at Mid-Ohio, an event he dominated last year. Still, the
Italian feels that the Miller 200 will be a challenge.
"Since last year, we have less downforce on the cars (due to rule changes),"
said Zanardi. "Last year the cars were much more forgiving. This year, if the
setup is not right, you cannot rely on a new set of Firestone tires to go
fast. Finding the balance is much more crucial. I believe it takes much longer
to find the setup and go fast. Nevertheless, I am confident. I believe we were
understanding things on the car by the end of our three-day test (in mid-June)
and were going very fast. I hope the circuit will not change much when we go
back for the race. I hope the car is good out of the box as it was at
Cleveland."
One driver that might have something for Zanardi this weekend is Bryan
Herta, who was the quickest driver in the mid-June test at Mid- Ohio. Herta
owes Zanardi one, as Zanardi stole a certain victory from Herta at Laguna Seca
last year. Driving for nearby Hilliard, Ohio-based Team Rahal, Herta, now a
resident of New Albany, Ohio, cannot help but feel he has some sort of a "home
track" advantage.
"One of the biggest advantages to living in Columbus now and having our
team's headquarters here is being so close to Mid-Ohio," Herta said. "We've
been able to test at the track several times already this season and have run
very competitively. That kind of familiarity breeds confidence and that's
something we'll need plenty of come race day. We've had strong cars the last
three series races, having made the podium at Cleveland and the top five at
the U.S. 500. We were on that same kind of string last year when we arrived at
Mid-Ohio and we rode that momentum to a fourth place finish. Let's hope we'll
be a few rungs farther up the ladder late Sunday afternoon."
Others to watch this weekend include Bobby Rahal, Andre Ribeiro, driving for
another Hilliard-based team in Tasman Motorsports, Al Unser Jr., and Michael
Andretti. Tasman's acquisition of a Reynard chassis for Ribeiro has breathed
new life into Ribeiro's previously dismal season driving the Lola chassis. The
Brazilian has been ultra-competitive since making the switch. The "old guard"
of the PPG CART World Series, Rahal, Unser Jr., and Andretti have all had a
great deal of success at Mid- Ohio.
Last year, Zanardi shattered the track record in qualifying to take the pole
and tore off into the lead for the first 28 laps before handing the lead to
his Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jimmy Vasser when he made his first
pit stop. Zanardi regained the point when Vasser stopped two laps later and
ran away again. On Lap 56, Zanardi made his final pit stop of the day, again
giving the lead to Vasser, and when Vasser made his final stop two laps later,
Zanardi led the rest of the way to take the win. Vasser took advantage of two
late race caution periods to close in on his teammate, but did not have enough
and crossed the finish line 1.914 seconds behind Zanardi. Andretti took the
last spot on the podium in third, followed by Team Rahal teammates Herta and
Rahal in fourth and fifth, respectively.
WHO'S HOT
Alex Zanardi - The win at the U.S. 500 propelled the Italian into the point
lead with five races left in the season. Of the remaining races in the 1997
season, Zanardi sat on the pole for all of them a year ago, and won at
Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca. Judging from his performance at Michigan, he must
also be the favorite for the season-ending Marlboro 500 at the new California
Speedway. A repeat performance of last year will most certainly give him the
championship.
Mark Blundell - The win at Toronto and a second place effort at the U.S. 500
makes Blundell one of the hottest drivers on the circuit right now. A tough
early portion of the season will likely dash any championship aspirations, but
he should be a shoo-in for CART's 1997 Most Improved Driver award.
Gil de Ferran - Nobody has scored more points in the past five races that de
Ferran, but the Brazilian is still looking for a breakthrough victory in 1997.
His second place finish at the U.S. 500 vaulted him into third place in the
point standings, but he needs a win soon if he is to challenge for the
championship.
WHO'S NOT
Paul Tracy - While Tracy has done what he needed to do to win the
championship by finishing races, and more importantly finishing in the points,
his early season dominance has dried up. He needs to heat up again quick
before Zanardi gets away.
Greg Moore - While Moore was one of the hottest, if not the hottest driver of
the month of June when he scored his first two career Indy car wins, July was
exactly the opposite. By not finishing in the points in any of the July races,
Moore has plummeted from second to fifth in the PPG Cup standings.
Jimmy Vasser - A dream season in 1996 has turned into a nightmare '97
campaign for the defending PPG Cup champ. No longer the top dog at Target/Chip
Ganassi Racing, Vasser has been very public about his desire to move on to
greener pastures. However, team owner Chip Ganassi does have Vasser under
contract through 1998 and fully intends to have the Californian in his stable
for the duration of his contract.

PPG Cup Points Leader Zanardi Set To Defend Miller 200 Title At Mid-Ohio
CART Online (August 3) -- Alex Zanardi has his cohorts in the PPG CART World
Series right where he wants them. For the first time in his 28-race career,
Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) sits atop the PPG Cup standings, following his
July 27 victory in the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota at Michigan Speedway.
The win, Zanardi's first career victory on an oval, boosted him to a 127-121
lead over Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) in the PPG Cup race as the PPG
CART World Series heads into Round 13, the Miller 200, Sunday, Aug. 10 at the
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio (3 p.m. ET, live, ABC-TV).
Not only has Zanardi wrested the points lead from Tracy - who had held it for
seven events, since the May 11 Hollywood Rio 400 at Rio de Janeiro, he also is
embarking on a portion of the schedule where he enjoyed considerable success
in 1996. Zanardi is the defending champion from the pole on the 2.25-mile
permanent road course at Mid-Ohio and also scored podium finishes at Road
America (third) and Laguna Seca (a victory), three of the remaining five
venues in the series.
"We know that the opposition is very tough and it is going to take all we can
to try to beat it," says Zanardi, owner of three victories (he also won at
Long Beach and Cleveland) and seven top four finishes en route to the PPG Cup
lead. "There are teams out there who are capable of doing the same kind of job
that we have been doing. But we definitely are confident that if we can get
the best out of [ourselves], we are going to be close to the lead.
A number of other drivers have realistic expectations of being close to the
lead as well. Tracy owns three runner-up finishes (1992, '94 and '95) in four
career starts at Mid-Ohio. Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard
Honda) has recorded five podium finishes in his past seven starts, tying him
with Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) for the season-long
series lead. As a result, de Ferran, third with 108 points, and Andretti,
fourth with 103, are in the thick of the PPG Cup race as well.
Andretti, Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) and Al Unser Jr. (Marlboro
Penske Mercedes) are all two-time winners at Mid-Ohio, all in back-to-back
fashion. Rahal won at Lexington in 1985 and '86, Andretti in '90 and '91 and
Unser Jr. in '94 and '95.
Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) belongs in the mix as well. He has
collected a series-high 61 points in the past four races, including his first
career victories (Portland and Toronto), a runner-up finish at the U.S. 500
Presented by Toyota and ninth at Cleveland. Suddenly, he is eighth in the
championship with 72 points.
Blundell's PacWest Racing Group teammate, Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest
Mercedes), also has 72 points. He has qualified in the top 10 for 15
consecutive events and leads the series in miles completed with 2,537.409 of a
possible 2,696.037.
Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) scored his second top-five finish of the
season with a fifth at Michigan and was the fastest of 19 drivers who
participated in a two-day open test session at Mid-Ohio in June. He turned a
lap of 123.568 mph, well above the track record of 122.100 set by Zanardi last
year.
Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford) returned to the cockpit at
that same open test, barely two months after sustaining a broken right leg
during an accident in Australia. The undulating Mid-Ohio layout helped prepare
him for an outstanding fourth-place effort in his competitive return at
Portland.
PPG Cup champion Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) finished second to
Zanardi at Mid-Ohio last year and seeks a return to the consistency which saw
him post 15 consecutive points-paying finishes over the latter half of '96 and
the first half of '97. Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) remains
fifth in the PPG Cup with 95 points, but has gone three events without scoring
for the first time in his career.
Brahma Sports teammates Scott Pruett (Brahma Reynard Ford) and Raul Boesel
(Brahma Reynard Ford) qualified first and third, respectively, for the U.S.
500 Presented by Toyota, but neither finished in the points. Pruett was
running fourth when he made contact with the Turn 2 wall. He finished 14th
while Boesel encountered transmission problems and finished 18th.
Andre Ribeiro (LCI/Marlboro Reynard Honda) led 21 laps at Michigan, the first
time he has led all season, but fell victim to transmission problems as well.
Tasman Motorsports Group teammate Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State Lola
Honda) has finished sixth or better in all three of his career starts at
Mid-Ohio.
Parker Johnstone (KOOL Reynard Honda) qualified a season-best fifth at
Michigan, but exited due to contact after 53 laps.
Several drivers come to Mid-Ohio off season-best finishes at Michigan.
Max Papis (MCI Reynard Toyota) finished a career-high eighth and was one of
three Toyota-powered drivers to score, along with Hiro Matsushita
(Panasonic/Duskin Reynard Toyota), who finished ninth, and Juan Fangio II
(Castrol-Jockey Reynard Toyota), who finished 11th. Matsushita's finish was
the second best of his 108-start career while Fangio's was his second best of
the season, exceeded only by a 10th at Detroit.
Rookies Gualter Salles (INDUSVAL Reynard Ford) and Arnd Meier
(J.A.G./Marcelo/Hawaiian Tropic Lola Ford) also scored at Michigan, finishing
10th and 12th, respectively. Salles is just four points behind Dario
Franchitti (Hogan Motor Leasing Inc. Reynard Mercedes), 8-4, for second place
in the Rookie of the Year race led by Patrick Carpentier (Alumax Reynard
Mercedes) with 27 points. Meier's 12th-place performance at Michigan gave him
the first PPG Cup point of his career.
Michel Jourdain Jr. (Herdez/Viva Mexico! Reynard Ford), Richie Hearn
(Ralphs-Food 4 Less Lola Ford) and rookie Charlie Nearburg (Nearburg
Exploration Lola Ford) will be making their first competitive appearances at
Mid-Ohio. PJ Jones (Castrol-Jockey Reynard Toyota) hopes to help continue
Toyota's recent run of success.
The PPG CART World Series continues with the Texaco/Havoline 200, Sunday, Aug.
17 from Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.

Mid-Ohio Friday Results
August 8, 1997
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
By David Phillips
Bryan Herta of New Albany, Ohio and Team Rahal of Hilliard, Ohio used the
home track advantage to the maximum today at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in
earning the provisional pole for Sunday's Miller 200 CART race. Herta, who was
quickest in a couple of CART open tests at Mid-Ohio earlier this summer,
turned a fast lap of 66.277s to edge PPG Cup points leader Alex Zanardi for
the top spot.
While conceding the Mid-Ohio race has special meaning for himself and for
Team Rahal, Herta downplayed any advantages he might have running on his home
track.
"The hometown track situation is a nice feeling," he said. "We get a lot of
local fans here supporting us and a lot of guys on the team who don't normally
travel to the races come up for the weekend. So in that respect it's like a
combination race weekend and company picnic.
"Beyond that we don't test here much more than the other teams. We were here
for the open tests and we have been able to develop a good set-up that seems
to work real well here."
Zanardi is also a man who has a good set-up at Mid-Ohio, as evinced by the
fact that he won the pole and led 79 of 83 laps en route to victory in the
1996 race. He was relatively pleased with his effort today, one that fell just
.026s shy of the provisional pole.
"I ran into traffic on my second set of tires," said Zanardi. "On my last lap
I had to pass a slower car and made a small mistake. But at the end of the
day, second is not terrible. It's a good place to start." Third quickest was
Greg Moore, looking to rebound from three straight dnfs that have dropped him
some distance back of the lead in the race for the PPG Cup.
"It's extra important to get back on track this weekend," said Moore, a two
time winner in 1997. "The last three races we've had three dnfs, two from
mechanical failures and a third from an incident at Toronto (where he and
Zanardi collided). It's important to get points here, to get the confidence
back in the team and get the momentum going. We had the momentum earlier this
year, now we need to get it back."
Zanardi is the driver with all the momentum at present, having scored two
wins (Cleveland and Michigan) and second place (Toronto) in the last three
events, a record that has enabled him take the PPG Cup points lead. However,
Zanardi - like Moore - knows well that momentum can change in a hurry.
"We had no momentum before Cleveland," he said, "so I know it can change very
fast. Just because you have had good results it is no sure that you will keep
going. The great thing about racing is that it is unpredictable."
One prediction on which the top three agreed is that today's qualifying
results will be a distant memory tomorrow afternoon. Improving track
conditions should make for much quicker times in the second day of qualifying.
"It feels great and it's nice to have the provisional pole," said Herta, "but
it's a false sense of security because everybody's gonna go faster tomorrow.
They're gonna wipe this off the chalk board. We're gonna have to do our
homework and go faster, because everybody else will."
"Just to satisfy my personal ego it would have been nice to go to sleep with
the pole in my pocket," said Zanardi. "But tomorrow's going to be another day."
And Sunday will be still another day when tires and tire wear are expected to
be a deciding factor. So far in 1997, Firestone has had the edge and Herta was
by no means confident that things will be different on Sunday.
"No question the tires have been a factor this year," he said. "With Goodyear
at times we've had good grip and at times we've had good durability, but it's
rare that we've had both.
"We have good grip today, but durability is a question mark. I can't go as
fast on my second run on a set of tires as the first, no question. But as the
track rubbers-in, hopefully that will help the durability situation."
"I think Bryan will find out about his tires on Sunday," said Zanardi - a
Firestone customer. "And he's going to find out that Firestones are better - I
hope."
At least for Friday, the tire competition was relatively even, with Goodyear
on the provisional pole with Herta, Firestone next up with Zanardi and Moore
followed by fourth fastest Gil de Ferran (Goodyear), Dario Franchitti and
Scott Pruett (Firestone), Christian Fittipaldi (Goodyear) and Jimmy Vasser,
Mauricio Gugelmin and Raul Boesel rounding out the top ten for Firestone.
* In light of the fact that Mid-Ohio winners come in twos - Michael Andretti
won in 1990 and '91, Emerson Fittipaldi won in '92 and '93, and Al Unser, Jr.
won in '94 and '95, history favors Alex Zanardi in 1997.
* The CART technical committee has recommended new engine rules for a new
millennium, calling for turbocharged 1.8 liter V8s with boost at 50- 55 inches.

Formula 1 Rumors, ili "od trača do istine i obratno" ;)
* Gianni Morbidelli is to race in Hungary but it's said that Peter Sauber
booked Alexander Wurz for the rest of the season until his scheduled
departure for Benetton.
* Apparently Martin Brundell was the test driver last week at
Benetton. He's the one who shooked down the B-197. Is Tom
Walkingshaw loosing all his friends?
* Could it be that Mika Salo who was rumored to Ferrari (see 23-04-97)
will finally get a "real seat"? He is now part of the names in line for
Fisichella's place at Jordan.
* Don't expect Arrows to get the Ilmor engine next year. Apparently
Mercedes refuses to share the engine with some other team unless it's
the version that happeared last year.
* Ford will continue with Cosworth for four more years even if BMW
buys the firm. (see 06-08-97)Also, Cosworth is presently preparing a
customer V10 for Tyrrell and... Minardi.
* Willy Weber already produced T-shirts for Michael Schumacher
claiming the 1997 F1 World Champ. It's said that he's now working
on the 1998 version!
* Did you know that Gerhard Berger will be 38 years old(!!!) a three
days after the Belgium GP.
* Ford-Cosworth could end pretty soon. The Northampton-based engine
firm of defence giant Vickers is rumored to be sold to BMW. The
German company wants to build it's own motors by 2000.
* More on the next Arrows engine. Yes, it could be a Hart V10
renamed. Brian Hart a strong competitor to Judd (Yamaha) and
Ilmor(Mercedes) was low in the finance area. He was waiting for a
sponsor to produce his V10. It's said that he is presently working
on the V10. Minardi didn't get a sponsor yet for the engine and
apparently Volvo wants it for Arrows.
* Another engine rumor. Benetton's Renault-Mecachrome engine could
be renamed next year as Agip. A direct competition to Petronas.
* You could now expect David Coulthard to go with Jordan next year.
After the German GP, he went to see Eddie Jordan in the Jordan
motorhome still dressed up in race trim.
* It was heard that Olivier Panis will go as a spectator at the
Belgium GP. He is expected to walk by himself in less than two
weeks.
* More on TWR. About a month ago, apparently Tom phoned Sauber in
order to know if Peter would sell him the ex-Ferrari engine deal.
* Gerhard Berger is now linked to McLaren after his great
performance at the last GP.
* Apparently Damon Hill almost signed a contract with Peter Sauber
(see 02-08-97). They agreed for Hill to drive a C16 this year but
Peter was to sign only if Damon would stay until the end of 1998.
Damon called it off. So don't expect Hill to Sauber in the near
future.
* Gerhard Berger was also approach by Peter Sauber. No word yet on
the results.
* It's said that TWR has his engine deal for next year. It would be a
Ilmor (Mercedes) engine renamed. (need more info).
* It's said that Olivier Panis will be set to make an F1 comeback at the
Luxemburg GP in september 28th 1997.
* Walter Wolf is ready to make a return to Formula One. He will align
his new team in 1999.
* Also in the comeback mood to F1 is included Erich Zakowski with
Zakspeed. Apparently there was some negotiations with Bernie
Ecclestone for an entry in... 1999!
* Yes, Alexander Wurz was confirm to be Benetton's driver for 1998.
Benetton is now booked.
* Apparently Damon Hill was in Hinwil trying to negociate a contract
with Sauber for next year.
* Depending on the Hungary GP, we will know if Frentzen stays or
goes.
* Gerhard Berger is more than ever related to a seat at Williams for
next year. Frentzen's seat that is.
* Honda is rumored to come in 2000 with it's own chassis with it's own
engine.
* It's said that Gerhard Berger could end up at McLaren or Williams. It
all depends what happens to Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Katastrofa... u zadnjem krugu :(((
auto-moto.208vector,
Greg Moore i Gil de Ferran. :) Ne bih da podsecam prisutne da Zanardi
ima odlican (re)start. ;)
