Trapattoni comes home to coach Fiorentina ROME, Giovanni Trapattoni has won seven Italian titles in a coaching career covering AC Milan, Juventus, Cagliari and Inter, but his home country can still provide him with a challenge - Fiorentina. The 59-year-old, about to finish his second and last season with German champions Bayern Munich, has confirmed he will be replacing Alberto Malesani as Fiorentina coach next season. The club's ambitious owner, media tycoon Vittorio Cecchi Gori, hopes the Trapattoni touch will bring the Serie A title back to Florence for the first time since 1969. Fiorentina are currently seventh. Now in his 24th season as a coach, Trapattoni has always worked at the very highest level and no one has won more Italian titles. In 13 seasons with Juventus, Trapattoni won six Serie A titles while he picked up his seventh and last title as coach of Inter Milan in 1989. After a second, less successful, period with Juventus between 1991 and 1994, Trapattoni seized the opportunity to coach Bayern in 1994. His first experience of German soccer hardly created an overnight sensation. Bayern ended the season in sixth place and a disappointed Trapattoni packed his bags to return to relegation battlers Cagliari in Italy. Trapattoni's forceful methods did not achieve the desired effect at the Sardinian club and he resigned from Cagliari in February 1996, only to find that Bayern wanted him back for the '96-'97 season. His second coming proved much more successful with Bayern lifting the Bundesliga title last season. Trapattoni could yet make it two in a row as Bayern are only two points behind leaders Kaiserslautern with two games to play. But Trapattoni's relations with senior Bayern players like Mario Basler, Mehmet Scholl and Thomas Strunz have deteriorated to the point where he called them "empty bottles" last month. Trapattoni denies he is returning to Italy because of problems in Munich. Rather he had "proved a point" by winning the German title. "I'll be happy to come home. I was fine at Bayern but Italian soccer is my world," Trapattoni said this week. "I like a challenge. To go and coach Bayern, I made myself learn German, starting from zero. "When I went to coach Inter, they hadn't won a title in nine years and now Florence represents another big challenge". For the time being, Trapattoni will not outline his plans for his new club but he is believed to have recommended Bayern defender Markus Babbel and midfielder Michael Tarnat, plus AC Milan's German midfielder Christian Ziege, to Fiorentina. Trapattoni's first and perhaps biggest task will be to persuade Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta to drop plans to leave Florence this summer. Batistuta, now in his seventh season at Fiorentina, is wanted by a host of clubs including AC Milan, Inter Milan, Parma and AS Roma.

>> I duplu krunu. No, dobro, ide Majorka u Kup Kupova.

Evo ga primer Udinezea. Oni naprave igrača i prodaju ga za velike pare. Vićenca takođe. Otkad Milan nije napravio dobrog igrača? A gle Bolonja.

United sign $16.7 million Stam to shore up defence MANCHESTER,- Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has signed PSV Eindhoven's Jaap Stam in a bid to find a central defensive partnership capable of underpinning his bid for European success. The Dutch international is to join United for 10 million pounds ($16.7m), a world record fee for a defender, and Ferguson was delighted to have clinched the deal after a month of negotiations. "Jaap Stam is a world class defender. I don't think there's any doubt about that. It's what we need right now and I'm very pleased that, subject to the formalities, we've finally got him," said the manager. "He's a terrific defender who is quick and who can pass the ball and I'm sure he'll do well for us." United have never adequately replaced Steve Bruce, their inspirational captain, who left two seasons ago after leading them to a league and Cup double. Phil and Gary Neville and Norwegians Ronny Johnsen and Henning Berg have all been used to partner or replace injury-plagued Gary Pallister without ever looking rock solid. Ferguson knows that to have any chance regaining the premier league title as well and achieving his cherished dream of winning the European Cup he must have defenders capable of stopping the likes of Ronaldo and Alessandro Del Piero. "It's fair to say that we've had to change our centre backs quite a lot this season -- more often than we'd like -- but Stam will certainly be a great addition," Ferguson said. "We have to be stronger to handle everything that's involved with domestic and European football and bringing in players like Stam will only help us. "There could be more teams in the European Cup next year and that would mean something like 10 group games. That puts a tremendous pressure on your resources, so we need to be ready." Stam has agreed personal terms via his agent Ton van Dalen but the player is yet to agree to them officially. He will finalise the details when United bring him to Manchester "in the next few days". The 25-year-old international said after winning the Dutch footballer of the year award last month that he had always wanted to play for the English champions. "His dream has come true," PSV Eindhoven coach Dick Advocaat said on Monday. Stam had been contracted to play for the Eindhoven club until 2003 and PSV had put a $28 million dollar price tag on him before finally agreeing to a reduced fee on Sunday. Stam, who won the Dutch league Cup and Supercup with PSV, began his professional career at the comparatively late age of 19, playing for FC Zwolle, Cambuur Leewarden and Willem II Tilburg before moving to Eindhoven. His international debut came as a substitute against Germany in 1996 but he made his name in a friendly against Brazil where he was impressive in the air and in his marking of Ronaldo. He now has 11 caps. "Stam's a real pro, he's very fast and he's a good header," Advocaat said. "It's a very good thing for United. He's a real team player and one of the best defenders in the world." Several English clubs showed an interest in Stam after he said he wanted to play in the premier league. The previous most expensive defender was Spain's Roberto Rios who moved to Athletic Bilbao from Real Betis last year for $12.9 million.

World Cup-Nigeria Milutinovic finally gets top team LAGOS, April 30 (Reuters) - Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic goes to the World Cup finals for the fourth successive tournament with his fourth different team -- but for the first chance he is not in charge of the underdogs. The Serbian-born coach, 53, has made his name in central and north America but will be in charge of Africa's Olympic champions Nigeria in France. Milutinovic, whose playing career took him from Partizan Belgrade in Yugoslavia via Switzerland and France to Mexico, first went to the World Cup as Mexican coach in 1986. In Italy four years later he was in charge of the giant-killing Costa Rican team. Then in 1994 he was in charge of hosts the United States. All reached at least the second round, but with Nigeria Milutinovic has the chance to make a major impact. Milutinovic, whose four-team record is matched by Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, the Saudi Arabia coach in France, took charge of Nigeria late last year after being sacked by Mexico at the end of their qualifying campaign. Mexico finished top of the CONCACAF final round qualifying group but a series of lacklustre performances in their last matches saw the flamboyant Serb fired in October. He was quickly wooed by the Nigerians, who had also sacked their coach Philippe Troussier despite qualifying comfortably for France. Such is the nature of the coaching merry-go-round that Troussier will be in charge of South Africa in France. Milutinovic tasted success in his first match in charge of the "Super Eagles," a 1-0 win over Iran in Hong Kong in January. He fielded a second-string team in a bid to unearth new talent but has turned to his expected World Cup players for Nigeria's final run of warm-up matches. "I have never had so may good players trying to make the team," he said. They have so many positive qualities. They have excellent mentality, are good physically and have so much determination. "More than that, they have experience of a World Cup." Quality of players have never been a problem for coaches in Nigeria -- but dealing with the authorities has. Milutinovic knows he will have to assert his authority over the notoriously fickle soccer federation but insists all is rosy at the moment. "They have given me everything that I need," he said.

Arsenal clinch 11th English league title LONDON, May 3 - Arsenal were crowned English champions for the 11th time on Sunday when they beat relegation-threatened Everton 4-0, clinching the first half of a possible league and Cup double. An own goal by Everton defender Slaven Bilic, two goals from Dutchman Marc Overmars and a late strike from Tony Adams secured the London club an unbeatable tally of 78 points with two matches still to play. The last goal of Tony Adams made kum.djole really pissed off because he played 3:0 against Everton, and not 4:0 at '90, so the idiot fucked up his score and he should be happy not to play friendly against Yugoslavia in Belgrade someday, what could make kum.djole to knock his head off.(*) Last season's champions Manchester United, their only challengers, cannot finish with more than 77 points. Arsenal will clinch their second double after 1971 if they beat Newcastle United in the F.A. Cup Final on May 16. Their most recent title successes were in 1989 and 1991. French coach Arsene Wenger became the first foreign coach to lead a club to the English title. The result left Everton, European Cup Winners' Cup champions in 1985, in serious danger of being relegated. With one game remaining they are now involved in a tight battle with Bolton Wanderers to avoid being the third club to go down with Crystal Palace and Barnsley. Tottenham and Wimbledon are now safe from the drop. Uz poruku: Arsenal.jpg SPORT-SOCCER:LONDON,3MAY98 - Arsenal players pose with the trophy after they won the Premier division championship May 3. MALDINI COULD LEAVE MILAN AC Milan could be ready to part with star players Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Demetrio Albertini after the club's latest humiliating defeat at the weekend. Milan lost the Italian Cup final 3-1 to Lazio last Wednesday and yesterday were thrashed 5-0 at the same Olympic stadium by AS Roma. Managing director Adriano Galliani slammed the performance and said everyone was to blame for the team's disastrous season. Although a clear out has been on the cards for some time, the Italian press are now warning it could be more dramatic than expected - and that the club are open to offers for their top trio. Maldini is the national skipper and fellow defender Costacurta, like midfielder Albertini, is also guaranteed a place at the World Cup finals. Yet they all failed to prevent the last week's debacle. Galliani, the right-hand man of club owner Silvio Berlusconi, would not be pressed on the club's detailed plans: ``There are times in life when it's better to talk and times when it's better to keep quiet,'' he said. ``And this is one of the times when it's better to keep quiet. "This is the lowest point in our 12 years with the club. Everyone - officials, players and coaches - have contributed to this disaster. ``There's a lot to think about, a lot to reflect on. The figures show that after away games, we come home having conceded three to five goals. It makes us all very bitter. I spoke with Berlusconi at half-time and his feeling was the same as mine - he was annihilated. It's time for everyone, and I do mean everyone, to take a critical look at themselves.'' Milan's record this season is 11 wins, 10 draws and 11 defeats, while only 36 goals have been scored in 32 games - and 40 conceded. The next move can only come from Berlusconi, as he weighs up whether to keep coach Fabio Capello, as now seems likely, and how much to spend on rebuilding his team over the next three months. AFP Nezvanično: AC MILAN have bought Bierhoff, Boksic, Ed Pope, N'Gotty and will buy Lehmann

Dear Soccer fans especially in Europe, Something not related to World Cup, but Super League in Europe. I remember weeks ago, a fan suggested that should have a European league from the major club all over the Europe. Is coming true in near future maybe by year 2002. I enclosed the news from "The People" below. Is great to see great team vs best team from each country represent. I want to hear some opinion from you guys out there. Forever Liverpool & England Supporters, Steve Lam Big 3 in Euro Super League shock by Steve Bates for "The People" Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are being tempted to quit the Premiership and join a new 32-club European Super League. I understand plans are already being discussed to launch a two-division European League as early as 2002 as football heads towards a revolution that will radically change the game. And some of the game's top administrators fear that a breakaway could destroy the domestic League system all over Europe. Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are believed to have studied details of the proposals which involve 32 of Europe's top club sides split into two divisions of 16. Power brokers from across Europe have been given a secret feasibility document produced by top international accountancy firm KPMG. And SUPER SPORT understands that talks have already begun to sound out top clubs in Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Holland and England. Currently UEFA's major European competition, the Champions' Cup, is seen as the Super League equivalent. But several big name clubs on the continent have become increasingly alarmed at UEFA's growing influence and some want to be free of its grip. Premier League spokesman Mike Lee said yesterday: "We've been talking with other leagues in Europe. We've been discussing things like Bosman, agents, club competitions and international fixtures, but not a Super League. "It's well-documented that certain clubs in Italy have looked at that possibility." But we can reveal that with or without the Premier League's involvement, English clubs have been approached about the idea - and they have shown interest.

Soccer-Antic to leave Atletico, Sacchi set to replace him By Phil Minshull MADRID, May 4 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid coach Radomir Antic will leave the Spanish club at the end of the season. Club president Jesus Gil said on Monday former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi would take over next season, although some points of the contract still have to be resolved. Saachi, who coached the great Milan side of the late 1980s and took Italy to the 1994 World Cup final, has been on a sabbatical since resigning last season after a second spell at Milan. Antic led Atletico to a Spanish league and cup double during his first year in charge in the 1995-96 season but since then has been unable to repeat the success. The Serbian coach has been under pressure all season after a series of indifferent results, especially away from home. The club are ninth in the first division, although they still have slim hopes of securing a UEFA Cup slot. Gil warned Antic last week that only victory against Mallorca would suffice to save his job. But they lost 2-1 on Sunday. The final straw appears to have been the substituting of Italy striker Christian Vieri, the Spanish first division's top scorer this season with 22 goals, after 62 minutes of Sunday's game. Vieri hurled insults at Antic as he left the field. The volatile Gil criticised Antic's inability to make the best use of expensive players such as Vieri who cost Atletico 2,600 million pesetas ($17.5 million) last summer. ``In the first year of Radomir Antic we spent 1,100 million pesetas ($7.25 million) and won the double. In his second year we spent 1,200 million pesetas ($7.9 million), fought for the league and were unlucky to go out to Ajax (Amsterdam) in the Champions' League,'' Gil said. ``This year we have spent 8,000 million pesetas ($52.7 million) and we know what the results have been. ``I hope I can continue to be friends with Antic because on balance he has brought more positive things to this club than negative. It's just one of those things that happens in life.'' Antic's three seasons at the club are the longest any coach has lasted during Gil's reign since he took over as club president in June 1987. If the contract negotiations with Sacchi are resolved then the Italian will become the 21st coach to be employed by Gil. Sacchi first hit prominence when media magnate Silvio Berlusconi plucked him from the relative obscurity of Parma in 1987 to coach Milan. In four seasons at the San Siro, Sacchi proved both innovative and successful, winning two European Cups and one Italian league title with a side which featured the great Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard. Sacchi took over the Italian national team in November 1991 and remained as coach for five years during which he guided the side to the 1994 World Cup final, losing on penalties to Brazil. His final months as Italy coach were marred by the disappointment of a first round exit from the 1996 European championship finals in England. Bitterly criticised by sections of the Italian media, Sacchi opted out of the national job to succeed Uruguayan Oscar Tabarez at Milan in December 1996. However, his second coming at Milan also proved disappointing. The team were eliminated from the Champions' League in the group stages and finished only 11th in Serie A.

WORLD CUP STARTS FACING HEALTH RISK FROM WONDER DIET DRUG Doctors fear a number of World Cup footballers may be at risk after a link was found between kidney damage and the diet supplement Creatine. They believe hundreds of players preparing for France 98, including Arsenal stars Tony Adams, David Seaman and Dennis Bergkamp could unwittingly put their lives at risk by using it. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has encouraged players to take Creatine but the club refused to comment. Creatine is a naturally occurring substance used by a number of top athletes to boost performance and reduce fatigue. But some experts now say it puts pressure on the kidneys by sucking water into muscles leading to massive dehydration. The article goes on to report a case in Salford where an amateur footballer was now being treated for kidney disease and a case in America where a wrestler died when using Creatine and contains other quotes from British Olympic Assoc.

Bergomi, Fresi may miss UEFA Cup final ROME,- Inter Milan may be without key defenders Giuseppe Bergomi and Salvatore Fresi for their all-Italian UEFA Cup final against Lazio on Wednesday. Veteran sweeper Bergomi, seeking a record 108th appearance in Europe, is still suffering from a left thigh strain and faces a late fitness test in France ahead of the Paris clash. Fresi hurt a hip in Sunday's 0-0 Serie A draw at home to Piacenza and did not take part in Inter's final training session in Italy on Tuesday at their Appiano Gentile base north of Milan. Bergomi, despite his 34 years, has missed only four matches at the heart of the Inter defence this season and his absence would be sorely missed. Fresi has been in and out of the side this year and, if he fails to recover, could be replaced by Fabio Galante.

Baggio to play or quit Italy MILANO, May 6 (AFP) Roberto Baggio says he wants to play alongside Alessandro Del Piero at the World Cup this summer, but that failure to make the team could see him quit Italy and move abroad. Baggio's double or quits approach comes as the Bologna striker prepares for a crucial game this weekend against his old club Juventus. He has scored in each of his last three games (five goals) and another one on Sunday, in a match which will almost certainly be watched by national coach Cesare Maldini in person, could book his ticket to France. "Today, I've got a tiny bit more hope than I had a month ago, but nothing is certain," said the 31-year-old. "I've still got another two weeks to convince Maldini by playing well and by scoring the odd goal. "I'd go to France in any role and in any system of play. What counts is being part of the national side for the last time, because four years are a long time. It's not my problem, it's Maldini's. But I'll keep on dreaming." Baggio, who has previously been wooed by clubs from the English Premiership to the Japanese J-League, then revealed the sub-plot to his World Cup call-up. "This World Cup is extremely important to me, it could be the turning point in my career," he said. "My future depends on taking part, or not, in the World Cup finals." If the answer is positive, then I think I'll be staying in Italy, and therefore with Bologna, where I've fitted in nicely and where people appreciate me. "But if things went differently, I could have to find a different solution one that I don't even know at the moment." Baggio paid tribute to his successor as Juventus' creative genius, Del Piero, and even claimed the two could be in the same team in France. "Today, in that creative role, he's better than me, he's the king-he's got the advantage of still being very young, of playing in the most complete team in the world and to have already won a lot at national and international level." The two men played together at the end of Baggio's spell with Juventus- " and we did well," Baggio said. "It proved that two players with similar technical characteristics can co-exist. "And if it worked out that way, we could also co-exist in the national side." Another objective which the striker want to reach by May 17, when the Serie A season ends, is his goal tally. "I'm up to 19 so far, which is pretty close to me personal record of 21 which I set with Juventus (1992-93). I need two more to equal it, and three to beat it. But it's not going to be easy against Juve and Lazio."

Brazil Favorite To Win Fifth Title By ROBERT MILLWARD The Associated Press LONDON (AP) - Who's going to finish second? Brazil is such an overwhelming favorite to win the World Cup for a fifth time that even three-time champions Germany and Italy and host nation France aren't given much of a chance by the world's media. In a poll of international and U.S. subscribers conducted by The Associated Press, four-time champion Brazil received 56 percent of the votes. France was second with 14 percent, Italy third with 9 percent and Germany fourth with 6.5 percent. England (3.9 percent), the Netherlands and Spain (both 2.6 percent) and Romania and Nigeria (1.3 percent) also picked up votes to win soccer's biggest honor. Surprisingly, only one subscriber out of 77 in the poll picked two-time champion Argentina, which beat Brazil 1-0 in a warm-up game last week, to win the title. The poll elicited responses from editors in 34 countries from all five continents. Apart from the major soccer nations which are competing in France, there were responses from countries including Thailand, the Cayman Islands, Latvia, India, Israel, Antigua, Vietnam and Singapore. Editors also were asked which player would score the most goals and which team would provide the surprise of the championship, which runs from June 10 to July 12. Brazil's Ronaldo was the overwhelming selection for top scorer. The 20-year-old striker, who plays in Italy for Inter Milan, polled 66 percent of the votes ahead of Italy's Alessandro Del Piero of Juventus with 9 percent. Gabriel Batistuta, the Argentine striker who plays in Italy for Fiorentina, got 6 percent. England's Alan Shearer and the Netherlands' Dennis Bergkamp, who meet in next week's FA Cup final when Newcastle faces Arsenal, each polled 3.6 percent. Nigeria, which beat Brazil and then Argentina to win the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta two years ago, was considered the team most likely to spring a surprise. Now coached by Bora Milutinovic, who is in charge of a record fourth different nation at a World Cup finals, Nigeria got to the second round at the last World Cup and was denied a quarterfinal place by two late strikes by Italy, the eventual runner-up. Nigeria gained 24.4 percent in the poll, while Norway and Spain each had 10 percent, Chile 8.6 and Jamaica 7.1. Japan, Croatia and Yugoslavia each polled 4.3 percent, while there also were votes for Saudi Arabia, South Korea and South Africa (2.8 percent), the United States, Colombia, Cameroon, Romania and 1994 semifinalist Bulgaria (each 1.4 percent). Asked to comment on what they expected to see happen at this World Cup, several editors envisaged many more red cards than usual because of FIFA's decision to outlaw tackles from behind starting with this competition. Some suggested that the gap between the soccer superpowers and the rest would be reduced while some editors, notably from South America, thought most games would be defensive with teams relying on counterattacks. A sampling of the subscribers' comments: ``I fear the new tackling rule will not be enforced, especially in the late stages of the competition,'' Nicklas Brunzell, Aftonbladet, Stockholm, Sweden. ``It will probably be a defensive World Cup with teams waiting in their own field for a mistake by their opponents. If this proves true, it will be a boring World Cup,'' Rodolfo Bello, El Espectador, Bogota, Colombia. ``It should have limited to 24 teams. There are too many makeweight teams, which makes it easier for strong teams to qualify for the second round,'' Prasert Srisueb, The Nation, Bangkok, Thailand. ``We need a better distribution of teams. There are too many from Europe,'' Radio Cayman, Cayman Islands. ``I would move to see somebody new win it. England would be new, it's been 32 years,'' George Vecsey, New York Times.

Soccer - Celades among eight Barcelona men in Spanish squad MADRID, May 7 (Reuters) - Barcelona midfielder Albert Celades was the only surprise in the Spanish World Cup squad, announced by coach Javier Clemente on Thursday. Celades will take over in the playmaker role from Spain's big absentee, Josep Guardiola, who declared himself unfit on Wednesday. Seven other players from runaway champions Barcelona are also included in the squad of 22. Clemente also discarded midfielders Benjamin and Emilio Amavisca, Fernando Sanchez, defenders Santi Denia and Roberto Rios and striker Oli Alvarez from the list of 29 'preselected' players announced last month. Clemente decided to stick by several trusted veterans who have failed to hold down first-team places at club level this season. Barcelona striker Juan Pizzi has hardly played at all since the arrival of coach Louis van Gaal, while Abelardo Fernandez, Miguel Angel Nadal, Guillermo Amor and Albert Ferrer have also struggled to be picked. Clemente's squad will rest after the end of the league season on May 17 and then meet for a training camp on May 22 in Puente Viesgo, a holiday spa on the northern coast. Spain's World Cup squad: Goalkeepers: Andoni Zubizarreta (Valencia), Santiago Canizares (Real Madrid), Jose Molina (Atletico Madrid) Defenders: Albert Ferrer, Miguel Angel Nadal, Sergi Barjuan, Abelardo Fernandez (Barcelona), Fernando Hierro (Real Madrid), Rafael Alkorta (Athletic Bilbao), Ivan Campo (Mallorca), Carlos Aguilera (Atletico Madrid), Agustin Aranzabal (Real Sociedad) Midfielders: Luis Enrique Martinez, Guillermo Amor, Albert Celades (Barcelona), Julen Guerrero (Athletic Bilbao) Strikers: Raul Gonzalez, Fernando Morientes (Real Madrid), Alfonso Perez (Real Betis), Joseba Etxeberria (Athletic Bilbao), Kiko Narvaez (Atletico Madrid), Juan Pizzi (Barcelona)

Soccer-Michael Laudrup to retire after World Cup AMSTERDAM, May 8 (Reuters) - Danish international Michael Laudrup said on Friday he would retire from professional football this summer after deciding not to play out the second year of his contract with Ajax of The Netherlands. ``I am happy that I could end my career at a fantastic club and with a fantastic team... The World Cup awaits. It is a great way to end my career as a footballer,'' the 33-year-old Laudrup said. Laudrup, who has played for Barelona and Real Madrid, joined Ajax last year after a one-year spell at Japan's Vissel Kobe. The 33-year-old midfielder has been a lynch-pin of the Danish national side and will bow out after playing for the Danes in the World Cup in France. His decision is a blow to Ajax, which had hoped to hold onto his services and those of former Dutch international Danny Blind as they compete in the Champions League next season.

Brehme retires as curtain falls on crazy season BONN, May 10- The curtain fell on a crazy Bundesliga season with Andreas Brehme lifting the champions' trophy on a day full of emotions for unfancied Kaiserslautern. "If somebody had predicted two years ago that we would be today where we are now, everybody would have laughed," said the "Red Devils" coach, Otto Rehhagel. "King Otto", who had already taken Werder Bremen from nowhere to two league titles and victory in the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup, worked another football miracle by making the south-western side the first promoted club to win the championship since the Bundesliga started in 1963. "What we have achieved will remain as an extraordinary feat," he added. "People will talk about it for years and years." Kaiserslautern, who had built an unassailable four-point lead on Bayern Munich by crushing VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 a week earlier, could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Hamburg SV in their final outing on Saturday. With little at stake, the match will be remembered mostly as the farewell party of the 37-year-old Brehme, one of German soccer's most loved characters, whose penalty kick won them the 1990 World Cup Final. Rehhagel was too smart to say so but his team beating prestigious Bayern Munich to the title provided him with the sweetest of revenges. After he was sacked by Bayern two years ago, Rehhagel took a risk by joining troubled Kaiserslautern, who had just been relegated to the second division. Without any fuss but with a lot of hard work, he led them back to the top flight. The rest is history. The great losers of the season have to be outgoing champions Bayern. The most successful and wealthy club in German soccer, who cannot be satisfied with anything less than the title, once again lived up to their nickname as Hollywood FC with plenty of squabbling and scandals. Coach Giovanni Trapattoni's furious outburst in broken German last March provided a symbol for their turbulent run. Gesticulating wildly and yelling, the usually cool Italian blasted his players, saying he was tired of defending them after poor performances. A few weeks later, Trapattoni announced he would return to his homeland at the end of the season, leaving the Bayern door open for former Borussia Dortmund coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. Bayern ended the season on a burst of pride on Saturday with a 4-0 demolition of arch-rivals Dortmund - the other big disappointment of the season. Coach Nevio Scala was constantly hampered by a string of injuries and an era ended for last year's European champions. A miserable 10th in the league, the Ruhr Valley club, who were knocked out of the European Cup by Real Madrid in a semifinal clash, will not play in Europe next season. Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart and Schalke 04 will and could be joined by Hansa Rostock if Stuttgart beat Chelsea to lift the Cup winner's Cup on Wednesday. Modest Arminia Bielefeld struggled all season and ended up last. They will be accompanied in the second division by Karlsruhe SC and Cologne. Karlsruhe, who played in the UEFA Cup this season, looked dull despite the efforts of international midfielder Thomas Haessler, now probably looking for another club. Cologne also went down, just 20 years after scoring a memorable league and Cup double. Bayern, who will at least play in the lucrative Champions' League, are busy putting together a team for next season. They said on Saturday that midfielder Stefan Effenberg, who played for them between 1990 and 1992, will re-join from Borussia Moenchengladbach. Once-great Moenchengladbach avoided relegation by beating VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 on Saturday but Effenberg had said he would leave even if they managed to remain in first division. Rehhagel, too, is working on ways of consolidating his side. "There's not much time to celebrate," he said. "On Monday, I will get back to work to make sure we can build on our success. It will cost plenty of energy and quite a lot of money." When Rehhagel said his example was Barcelona, nobody laughed. brehme.jpg

RC Lens wins the title PARIS, May 9- Small-town club RC Lens won the French first division championship for the first time on Saturday after a fine unbeaten run of eight league matches. The northerners drew 1-1 away to AJ Auxerre to snatch their first major trophy on goal difference from Metz, 1-0 winners at home against Lyon. Lens, dropping two points for the first time in eight matches, fell behind after only 13 minutes when Auxerre captain Sabri Lamouchi scored with a low shot from a pass by Stephane Guivarc'h. With Metz already ahead after a third-minute strike from Bruno Rodriguez, the Lens fans feared their dreams of a trophy might crumble altogether after their 2-1 defeat to Paris St Germain in the French Cup final a week ago. But young left back Yohan Lachor, dropped for the Stade de France final so coach Daniel Leclercq could field a rare three-man defence, became Lens' hero with a 53rd minute equaliser. "This will remain engraved in my memory. I'll never forget it," Lachor, at 22 the youngest player in the side, said. "I'm from Lens and I've been playing at Lens for 10 years, climbing through the ranks." Libero Frederic Dehu sent a ball across field to the left where Lachor ran into the box to guide it between Auxerre's reserve goalkeeper Fabien Cool's legs. Cool came on for Lionel Charbonnier after 27 minutes when the French international injured his back. Lens, dominating and forcing Auxerre into playing on the break, deserved their equaliser after several near misses. There was a tight offside decision in the 10th minute when Czech Vladimir Smicer was denied a goal. Winger Tony Vairelles, defender Eric Sikora and Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe all narrowly missed the target. Cool also made some superb saves only minutes after coming on, parrying a shot by Vairelles, then blocking Yugoslav Anto Drobnjak's effort from the rebound. It was Lens' only draw away from home all season after nine wins and seven defeats. One of those away victories, 2-0 at Metz at the end of March, proved the turning point of the season. "There aren't words to express what I feel," Lens president Gervais Martel said. "We were in the race all the time even if at the start of the season no-one would have bet a kopek on us. "But at the moment I'm thinking above all of our wonderful fans who deserve this title," he said. Metz captain Sylvain Kastendeuch said: "We can be proud of what we've done. It's the best result in the history of the club." Auxerre needed to win to snatch France's last UEFA Cup berth from Lyon, who joined Monaco, Olympique Marseille and Girondins Bordeaux in the competition next season. Instead, Auxerre go into the Intertoto Cup from where they emerged this season to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, the best run in Europe by any French team apart from Monaco who reached the European Cup semifinals. The outgoing champions ended their season in style with a 5-2 rout of Bordeaux to finish third above Olympique Marseille, held 1-1 at Le Havre. International strikers David Trezeguet of France and Nigeria's Victor Ikpeba both hit two goals apiece to finish second and third highest scorers in the division. France's Guivarc'h was the top scorer for the second year running with 21 goals after scoring 22 for Rennes last season. A goal 16 minutes from time by Kaba Diawara saved Rennes from relegation as they beat Toulouse 1-0 to finish a point ahead of En Avant Guingamp, who were relegated along with Chateauroux and Cannes. Paris St Germain, who won both the League Cup and French Cup, ended a poor season in the championship with a 2-1 defeat at Chateauroux. PSG's best player of the season, Italian striker Marco Simone, scored their only goal.

After a fairly sedate opening Bolton seemed to step up a gear and Per Frandsen in particular came close. He had shots over & wide and also produced a superb solo effort and when his shot beat the keeper, Dennis Wise cleared off the line. Bob Taylor also came close when his bullet header was blocked. For Chelsea Dennis Wise had a thumping shot saved by Branaghan but they showed little else besides. The second half saw Chelsea have the better possesion but Bolton have the chances. Sheridan shot at De Geoy after his original shot had almost knocked out Bob Taylor, Blake shot over after the keeper had been beaten by Thompson`s cross and Thompson again came close from a tight angle. Then the goal arrived as Vialli latched onto a pass by Jody Morris to nick the ball past Branaghan and in. The Italian then shot wide as Chelsea dominated late on until news from Goodison that Everton had missed a penalty AND Coventry had equalised, a goal for Bolton would now keep them up. Alan Thompson`s cross was inches too high for the forward line and as Bolton pushed forward Jody Morris was put clear to score the second and ultimatly end Bolton`s Premiership reign. News Premiership/Nationwide SOUTHAMPTON have joined MANCHESTER UNITED, ATLETICO MADRID and PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN in the race to sign Cameroon international midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe from Lens, according to a report in U.K. newspaper the Guardian. Saints manager Dave Jones has tracked the 22-year-old for the past month, the paper says, and he's set to offer a club record 2.5 million pounds ($4 million) for the player. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY manager Ron Atkinson wants to sign German international striker Jurgen Klinsmann, who played his last game for TOTTENHAM on Sunday, reports the Mail on Sunday. The 33-year-old was set to leave the English game for Major League Soccer in the U.S., though Atkinson, who tried to sign Klinsmann for ASTON VILLA in 1994, hopes to convince the player to stay. Former Northern Ireland coach Bryan Hamilton, currently coaching at IPSWICH, has put his name forward for the managerial post at Second Division WALSALL, who dismissed Jan Sorensen last week, reports the Mail. WEST BROM striker Lee Hughes, who scored 14 goals this season, has pledged his future to the club by signing a new, four- year contract at the Hawthorns, reports the Independent. Noel Gallagher, MANCHESTER CITY fan and guitarist with pop group Oasis, has said he has no intention of buying the Maine Road club, according to the Independent. Gallagher, who has been repeatedly linked with moves to take over City, said: ``I won't say how much money I've got but I couldn't buy one decent player.'' CHELSEA are to appeal to the European Commission if RANGERS prevent Danish striker Brian Laudrup moving to Stamford Bridge in the summer, according to a report in U.K. newspaper the Express. The Scottish club say Chelsea must pay a transfer fee -- believed to be around 6 million pounds ($9.6 million) -- because the London side made the approach for the 29-year-old while he was still under contract. Chelsea say Laudrup should be able to leave as a free agent under the Bosman ruling which allows freedom of movement for out-of-contract players. Meanwhile, the Express also reports that LIVERPOOL's U.S. international goalkeeper Brad Friedel will learn Friday whether he's been granted the work permit which would allow him to stay at the Merseyside club. saturn@isfa.com
