Dear Amigans,
Many of you have been wondering what's happening with VIScorp,
the Amiga, and why my name is no longer on the vistv web site.
I hope this is not too long-winded for you, but here is a brief
summary of my story:
1. I joined VIScorp about a year ago as a consultant to help
them create new system software for the Amiga. I believed at
that time that they had the ability to take the Amiga into
several new, huge markets around the world. They made many
promises to me in order to get me to join the project.
2. In March 1996 VIScorp informed me that they planned to buy
Amiga Technologies. The reason was simple: for the vast
quantities of Amigas that they planned, it was cheaper to
buy AT then to pay the royalty. It seemed to me that this
could work, if they could come up with the money.
3. Over the months that followed, I made numerous suggestions
to VIScorp regarding what they needed to do to support and
further improve the Amiga. I even proposed a business plan
centered around the Amiga, as it seemed to me that you CAN
have an ALTERNATE computer for people who don't want PCs.
After all, what would our cars be like if only one company
produced them? The Amiga offered us a choice.
4. VIScorp never responded to my suggestions. Not once. In
fact, they kept me totally in the dark as to what they were
doing and what progress had been made on the AT deal. I
never knew from day to day what was going to happen next.
5. By August I was starting to tire of VIScorp and its unkept
promises to all of us. They were 110 days behind in paying
me, and I was very disappointed in the whole mess that they
had brought on the Amiga community, developers and dealers,
and myself. It had become clear to me that VIScorp was not
competent. I took a couple weeks off and went to Florida.
6. In September I tried to recruit RJ Mical to join the team. I
put a lot of energy into it, as RJ was skeptical of VIScorp.
I finally succeeded! Then, VIScorp blew him off. RJ and I
couldn't believe it. What were they doing?
7. Finally, I decided to focus 100% on what they had originally
hired me for: to create a TV set-top Amiga. Perhaps if we
could build a good demo, VIScorp could convince one of its
investors to contribute extra cash. By the end of September,
Don, Steve, Jim, and I had finished a dazzling prototype of
such an STB. In my opinion, it really showed off what the
Amiga could do as a STB. The software for it was entirely
written by Jim and I, because VIScorp had not been paying
any of the other contractors.
8. After delivering the prototype, I never heard a word back.
VIScorp was again far behind in payments. What were they
doing? What had gone wrong? What was next?
9. Whatever it was, I didn't want to be part of it any longer.
I've never seen such an idiotic, screwed-up, incompetent
company (and I am saying it mildly). VIScorp was worse than
Commodore, and I never thought that was possible. I took my
name off the web site, vowing not to be a part of this
lunacy.
So what can I say? Please don't flame me for doing this. I refuse
to be part of such a sloppy situation, regardless of my love for
the Amiga. Over the last 10 months I have heard from many of you,
and have sent nearly 1500 personal email replies to you. All I
can say is that I am sorry that I could not do more for you and
our Amiga Computer.
I am unsure what the future holds for the Amiga. Perhaps VIScorp
or some other company will scrape together enough cash to make
the AT purchase. We can only hope.
As for my future, I am going to return to what I do best:
operating systems and languages. You have not heard the last from
me. I can imagine a system much better than the Amiga.... now to
create it. Truely, only time will tell.
Stay in touch my friends.
Sincerely yours,
Carl Sassenrath

Follow Up Message From Carl Sassenrath
I have received a large volume of email asking what will now happen to the
Amiga. Even as one of its designers, I cannot offer you a solid, positive
answer. There are many paths from here. We are again back at the
crossroads. To me personally, I think the road must be toward a rebirth of
those core concepts that made the Amiga what it was, and I encourage all of
you to hold on, regardless of how desparate the situation may seem.
Please, my friends, remain the "rebels" that you are. It is up to each of
us to see to it that there always remains a choice, else I fear for our
future... and the future of all personal computing.
-=-
A lot of people have asked what I will do next. In general, I can say that
I am NOT pleased with the direction personal computers have taken over the
last decade. These systems are now hundreds of times faster, with hundreds
of times more memory. Yet, are we better off? Are we more productive? Have
they made life easier?
No. Not in the least. In some areas they've made the situation worse. It
reminds me of our federal government: requiring ever more money and
resources, but becoming bigger, slower, and dumber.
This is not a hardware problem. The software is to blame. We have become
enslaved by overly complex and twisted software. I'm talking here about
systems like MS Windows, C++, TCP/IP, HTML, etc. They are all junk-the work
of designers who really don't understand how our minds work or relate to
our personal human condition.
SIMPLE THINGS SHOULD BE SIMPLE TO DO! Yet, complex things should still be
possible. That is the kind of system I want to use, and that is what I am
going to build next. After creating the Amiga multitasking kernel, I didn't
stop thinking about operating systems, I just figured that someone else was
going to move us forward to the next best thing. It has not happened.
So now it has come time to start afresh. However, this time, I'm going to
create it for you and for me, not for some company whose CEO just wants to
get rich. It will be wonderfully elegant, pure, efficient, and simple.
I have already begun. The system will develop in two phases. The first is a
better means of expression, the second, a better means of operation. If you
want more info in the months ahead, link www.sassenrath.com into your web
browser site list and visit often.
So that is my journey, my future. I expect it to be a rough road at times,
but this is the path I must take. It is my sincere hope that many of you
Amigans will join me in the years ahead... with a system for the next
century.
Stay in touch and all the best to you in the years ahead.

Still not registered for MUI?
Check out www.sasg.com for great discounts NOW!
Changes for users:
- When tab-cycling through objects of a virtual group, MUI tries to
ensure that the surrounding active object frame is always visible.
- Added a little gimmick for registered users (OS 3.x required): Take a
digitized picture of yourself (approximately 80x100 pixels in size)
and copy it to "MUI:user.pic". MUI's preferences will then become a
little more personal :). Note that you can use any graphics format
(ilbm, gif, jpeg, etc) as long as you have a datatype to read it. In
other words: if you can view it with Multiview, MUI can display it
too. Take care that the picture is not too big, otherwise MUI might
fail to open the prefs window. Thanks again for supporting MUI and the
Amiga!
- Included new catalogs:
Portuguese by Fernando Nunes and Alexandre Gabriel
Spanish by Pedro Luis Mieza and Juan Antonio Ramirez
- Translations of PSI were still messed up. All catalog related problems
should finally be fixed now.
- Fixed a few more bugs concerning the appearance and refresh of help
bubbles.
- Fixed a possible deadlock that could occur when balancing objects were
used in certain combinations.
- Balancing could accidently mess up the display of active object frames.
- Implemented keyboard control for balance objects.
Changes for programmers:
- Reduced stack usage a little. Note well: this is no excuse for lazy
programmers! As mentioned in the MUI developer docs, the default stack
size of 4k is not enough for MUI programs! 8k is an acceptable
minimum.
- MUIA_Gauge_InfoText is now also possible for vertical gauge objects.
- Made MUIM_Window_Snapshot method public. See autodocs for details.
- MUI would accidently refuse to automatically move a listviews display
to the active entry, even though the MUIA_List_AutoJump flag was set.

Obratite pažnju, Amiga Technologies je juče praktično dobila novog vlasnika!
Gateway 2000 Acquires Assets of Amiga Technologies GmbH
North Sioux City, South Dakota, March 27 1997 - Gateway 2000 Inc.
(Nasdaq: Gate) today announced that the company has made an offer to
aquire the assets of AMIGA Technologies including all patents,
trademaks and trade names. The Company is a subsidary of ESCOM AG, a
German-based computer company that went into bankrupty in July of
1996. Amiga led the industry in combining computer graphics,
animation, and film sequences with stereo sound known today as
multimedia.
The offer has been accepted by the court-appointed Administrator in
Bankruptcy in Germany acting on behalf of AMIGA. The agreement is
subject to regulatory approval.
"This acquisition is good news for Gateway and customers of AMIGA,"
said Rick Snyder, president and COO of Gateway 2000. "It will
strengthen our intellectual property position and invigorate a company
that has been a pioneer in multimedia solutions and operating systems
technology."
AMIGA Technologies will be renamed AMIGA International. The company
will operate as a separate business unit and will retain its current
president, Petro Tyschtschenko, who will work to develop new products
for the AMIGA market.
"Gateway 2000 will give us new life and energy for the future," said
Tyschtschenko.

worldwide. Gateway 2000 products and services consistently win top
awards from leading industry publications. In 1996, the company
shipped 1.9 million systems and reported revenues of $5 billion and
net income of $250 million.
About AMIGA Since the introduction of the AMIGA A1000 in 1985, AMIGA
has represented the embodiment of the efficient use of memory and hard
drive capacity, while pioneering industry developments in multimedia,

CUCUG Welcomes Gateway 2000 To The Amiga Community
CUCUG and The Amiga Web Directory are pleased to see the long wait
associated with simply knowing who the new owners will be is finally
over. While it's a little early to judge just what Gateway 2000's
long-term plans are for the Amiga, there are a number of very positive
things that can be said.
First, Gateway has financial resources and as far as we know, is
financially stable. They enjoyed sales of $5.04 billion with a 5%
after-tax net income last year, a record for Gateway. Secondly, this
is a company--unlike Commodore--which is not afraid of marketing and
advertising computers. Their voluminous print ads which dominate the
computer magazines are clever and eye-catching. Their recent
television spots are also entertaining and display the companies
products in a very positive light. Gateway just may spend a few
dollars advertising the Amiga. This alone will be a strong, postive
dynamic in the Amiga market.
Maybe even most importantly, regardless of what you think about Wintel
boxes, Gateway is known for a very high-quality product. While they
have had some problems handling exponential growth (they at one time
had one of the worst product support scores but have performed a
complete turn around in that area), their products have never seemed
to be compromised. We can probably look forward to high quality from
Gateway.
But as Amiga Report's Jason Compton points out, we should not grow too
euphoric at this point. The deal must still pass muster with German
regulators and we still do not yet know Gateway's long-term plan for
the Amiga. But, all signs do point in mostly positive directions.
CUCUG welcomes Gateway to the Amiga family and hopes that this signals
the rebirth of our favorite computer of all time.

Intangible Assets Manufacturing Responds to Amiga Acquisition
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., March 27, 1997 /UseNet News/ -- Intangible Assets
Manufacturing President, and former Commodore-Amiga Software Engineer,
Dale L. Larson, has issued the following statement in reaction to
today's news that Gateway 2000 has purchased the Amiga assets subject
to regulatory approval:
"I'm thrilled that the Amiga technologies have finally been purchased,
more so that they have been bought by a company with such tremendous
resources, visionary management, and customer-service orientation as
Gateway 2000. From their statement that they 'will work to develop new
products for the AMIGA market,' we conclude that the Amiga has a newly
bright future ahead of it. I trust that this will re-invigorate the
Amiga community and renew interest in our markets. We're looking
forward to a surge in sales of our Amiga products in the coming months
as a result of this announcement."
Intangible Assets Manufacturing produces a line of Amiga products,
including the book "Connect Your Amiga! A Guide to the Internet, LANs,
BBSs and Online Services", DiskSalv4, MRBackup, MegaBall4 and others.
IAM also publishes Internet-related books "Torn Shapes of Desire:
Internet Erotica" and "Lineland: Mortality and Mercy on the Internet's

Blast from the past: Gateway to buy remnants of Amiga
By Margaret Kane
PC Week Online
Gateway 2000 Inc. has offered to buy Amiga Technologies, the
now-bankrupt German company that launched the first multimedia machine
in 1985.
Earlier today, Gateway, based in North Sioux City, S.D., announced it
had applied to a German bankruptcy court to acquire the assets of
Amiga Technologies GmbH, a subsidiary of the ESCOM AG.
ESCOM acquired Amiga in April 1995 after that company went bankrupt,
and subsequently went bankrupt itself in July of last year.
Gateway said it planned to rename the company as Amiga International
and operate it as a separate business unit, developing new products
for the Amiga market. Petro Tyschtschenko, president of Amiga, will
stay on in the position.
A spokeswoman said Gateway could not comment beyond what was in its
official statement, pending approval of the deal from German
regulatory agencies.
The Amiga market, which is very small in the United States, has a
larger presence in Europe. The company's niche is mainly in the video
industry and three-dimensional rendering industry.
By comparison, Gateway has been very successful in promoting its
direct market model in the United States, but has yet to become a
household name in Europe.
"Maybe they're trying to use it to get more international exposure,"
said Ross Rubin, group director of consumer Internet technologies at
Jupiter Communications, in New York. "Gateway and Dell [Computer
Corp.] have been predominantly strong in domestic sales but not as
strong as their competitors overseas. They may be looking for
exposure."
Rubin also pointed out that Gateway has been experimenting in the
multimedia market, most notably with its Destination big-screen PC.
The Destination also marked Gateway's first foray into the retail
world.
"There's been a lot of talk about using Amiga technology for set-top
boxes," Rubin said. "The operating system is very high-performance on
modest hardware. It might be used as sort of a [network computer]
play."
But Rubin still seemed puzzled by the purchase.
"Gateway has been very successful at basically sticking to the Wintel
platform and party line through the years," he said. "There were a
couple of rumors a while back that they might license the Mac OS, but
they've just been kind of preaching the gospel very strongly for
years. So I do find it surprising they would invest in alternative OS
technology."

Novi Amiga Report ...
ar509.lhanovosti.358vpoznanovic,
WARP novosti
Najnovije vijesti i govorkanja o Amigi...
[26.12.97] CrossDOS 7 definitivno izašao
Prije nekoliko dana je izašao CrossDOS 7. Najvažnija novost je da je nova
verzija spremna čitati i pisati Windows95 formatirane diskove.
[23.12.97] Sretan i čestit Božić i Nova Godina
Wow. A onda 20+Kn za Warp II. Držte
palčeve, i izdržite još malčice. Dalje obavijesti, ovdje.
[09.12.97] LZX je postao freeware
Jonathan Forbes, autor najboljeg algoritma za kompresiju podataka: LZX,
je konačno popustio pod zahtjevima mnogobrojnih Amigaša širom svijeta
okupljenim na comp.sys.amiga.* USENET grupama, i poklonio je Amiga
zajednici beplatan LZX keyfile.
Naravno,
mjeseca 98-e.
poput Epsona i Adobe.
Commodoreovih inženjera: RJ Michal i Carl Sassenrath (AmigaOS), Ed
Hepler (custom chip designer) i dr.
* Odluka o glavnom procesoru u novim Amigama još uvijek nije donesena.
(dva procesora). Trenutno Amiga Inc. nije u mogućnosti izdati
detaljnije specifikacije novih Amiga zbog skorih konzultacija o tom
pitanju sa Gatewayom 2000.
[17.11.97] Computer 97 - Blizzardi PPC 603e!!!
[12.11.97] Miami službeni TCP/IP stack novog WBa Amiga Internationala
i nadgradnja s davno prodate verzije 3.5.
[10.11.97] Opet bug u Pentium procesorima
Intel i dalje ponavlja stare navike i novi bug u Intelovim Pentium (MMX)
procesorima postali "standardni dio" svakog budućeg PC-a opremljenog s
Intel procesorima? :)
povratak Amineta treba očekivati tek u ponedjeljak. Nabrusite svoje
browsere da budu spremni u ponedjeljak. Dobru vezu AmiSurferima želi
WARP.
[07.11.97] FastIPrefs, NotifyIntuition
Nagradno
izvlačenje će biti tik uz izlazak. ćaljite i dalje svoje glasove i svoje
oglase, zasada imamo oko 20-ak oglasa. Warp Credo: Izdržite jo╣ malo!
[07.11.97] Planet Aminet je doživio teški raspad sistema
Usprkos velikim sigurnosnim RAID super-sistemima za pouzdano arhiviranje
podataka, Planet Aminet je doživio spontani raspad sustava. Ne treba
očekivati nove uploadove slijedeći tjedan a sigurno i duže. Ako ne╣to
budete trebali posjetite alternativne Ogledalne Planete, Paderborn na
primjer.
Petro Tyschtschenko, predsjednik Amiga
govor predsjednika Amiga Inc. (razvojno-istraživački tim u USA) Ricka
poduzeti dosadašnji koraci u razvoju novih Amiga. Sve što saznamo biti
će objavljeno ovdje, zato stisnite palčeve i pratite WARP Web!

BLIZZARD 603e Power Board finally went into production, passes CE approval
Oberursel, 2/5/98:
Good news for all users of the Amiga 1200 which are looking forward to
upgrade their computer to PowerPC performance: The BLIZZARD 603e Power
Board finally went into production by end of January, and will start
shipping in the second half of February. The finalization of this product,
which has been presented to the public already in November 1997 on the
Amiga Show in Cologne, had been delayed by some small but tricky design
problems that are now solved. Amiga 1200 users can now go for real
Power(PC)horses for their machines, too.
Phase 5 digital products has changed the product line and the nomenclature
of the BLIZZARD 603e Power Board, which will be available in speeds of 160,
200 and 250 MHz. Three major changes should be recognized by all customers:
1. There will be no more 030 version coming out (formerly named BLIZZARD
603e), only the 040/060 version will become available (formerly known as
BLIZZARD 603e+).
2. The '+' sign remains and indicates that the board is equipped with a
SCSI controller, while the standard BLIZZARD 603e comes without SCSI; this
decision has been made to offer a lower-cost entry product. The SCSI
controller can not be upgraded later, however; this is a compromise due to
the design requirements.
3. The BLIZZARD 603e and 603e+ boards will ship either with a 68LC040-25
(w/o FPU), a 68040-25 (w/ FPU) or a 68060.
The new product line looks as follows, with a recommended retail pricing in
UK Pounds and US Dollar as follows (prices for the UK incude VAT):
BLIZZARD 603e Power Board (Without SCSI-Controller)
á á68LC040-25 á68040-25 á68060-50
BLIZZARD 603e UKP 239 UKP 249 UKP 489

BLIZZARD 603e UKP 299 UKP 309 UKP 539

BLIZZARD 603e UKP 359 UKP 369 UKP 599
250 MHz USD 589 á USD 609 áUSD 979
BLIZZARD 603e+ Power Board (With SCSI-Controller)
á á68LC040-25 á68040-25 á68060-50
BLIZZARD 603e+ UKP 289 UKP 299 UKP 529
160 MHz USD 469 USD 499 USD 879á
BLIZZARD 603e+ UKP 349 UKP 369 UKP 599
200 MHz USD 569 USD 599 USD 969á
BLIZZARD 603e+ UKP 409 UKP 429 UKP 649
250 MHz USD 669 USD 689 USD 1049
Phase 5 digital products has put a marketing focus on the low-end boards
with inexpensive 040's and the 160 or 200 MHz PowerPC CPU. "These
entry-level products will provide the best price-performance relation, and
offer a substantial performance and functionality increase for A1200 users
for a reasonable investment" says Wolf Dietrich of Phase 5. "Therefore we
will start to ship the 160 MHz versions first, and later the 200 and 250
MHz versions, as we currently have some 9-10 weeks delivery lead time on
the faster PowerPC chips." The BLIZZARD 603e Power Board comes along with a
complete software demo package, including e.g. a MPEG player that allows
for MPEG playback in small resolutions even on the Amiga's AGA standard
graphics, and other interesting software.
Phase 5 digital products will offer special upgrade conditions for users of
a BLIZZARD 1240 T/ERC or a BLIZZARD 1260 Turbo Board; the upgrade offer
will be published on Phase 5's website in February, and will also be mailed
to registered users during February. Also available on Phase 5's website
will be a purchase information for users of 68040/68060 boards from other
vendors, who want to obtain a BLIZZARD 603e Power Board.
Users of BLIZZARD 1230-IV boards, which had been looking forward to a
68030-based PowerUP board as an upgrade, will also get special upgrade
conditions for the 68040-based BLIZZARD 603e Power Boards. The upgrade
offer will be published on Phase 5's website in February, and will also be
mailed to registered users within during February. Users who have no access
to the internet or don't get an upgrade mailing can also contact their
local distributor or dealer for the upgrade conditions.
BLIZZARD 603e and BLIZZARD 603e+ Power Boards pass CE approval
The BLIZZARD 603e and BLIZZARD 603e+ Power Boards, installed into a
standard Amiga 1200 desktop system, have passed the CE approval for Class A
devices in compliance with the EN55022 standard; this means that both
products can be used in standard Amiga 1200 desktops under the condition
that the user undertakes necessary actions in case that e.g. radio or
television reception in the near surrounding gets disturbed. Such necessary
actions would be the use of a shielded case, such as a common tower case
for the Amiga 1200, in which the combination of the Amiga 1200 motherboard
and the BLIZZARD 603e and BLIZZARD 603e+ Power Boards fully complies to the
EN55022 Class B standard. Phase 5 digital products points out that the use
of the BLIZZARD 603e or BLIZZARD 603e+ Power Board in a desktop Amiga 1200
may also require the usage of a replacement power supply, which are usually
provided with tower cases.

Haage & Partner News January, 1998 - Storm Products Are Now Ready For
Power PC Programming
Over the course of the last year and a half we have been preparing our
development system for PowerPC-programming. Now that StormPowerASM is
finished we can offer you all the necessary tools: StormC for PowerPC,
StormPowerASM and WarpUP. This combination provides the programmer
with a total package for porting existing software to the new PowerPC
based Amigas. The process is simple, quick and efficient.
Together with the visual GUI-editor, StormWizard and with StormC for
p.OS; the Storm development system allows you to easily create
powerful program interfaces and to support the alternative p.OS
operating system.
Thus the Storm product line places the most modern development tools
directly in the hand's of the programmer. It also offers great
flexibility for supporting all possibilities for future Amiga
development.
StormPowerASM for PowerPC
The latest member of the Storm family is StormPowerASM, a
PowerPC-assembler for Amiga computers. It supports the entire PowerPC
instruction set and on top of that offers several hundred extended
mnemonics that make programming easier and greatly increase source
code readability. It has outstanding macro-abilities and the support
of floating-point expressions and -operators prove the high level of
this new PowerPC programming system.
The documentation describes programming the PowerPC. A list of all
macros and directives (featuring extensive descriptions) is also part
of the documentation, as well as detailed information on our
hardware-layer.
StormC 3.0 for PowerPC
For some time now the PowerPC add-on for StormC has been available.
This enables you to flexibly program the dual-processor boards by
phase5 and any future PowerPC-boards. With the extended hunk-format
(EHF); mixed-binaries, fat-binaries, and even PowerPC-native
shared-libraries can be created. The task of porting already existing
software is greatly simplified by this. Investing in this powerful
add-on will pay off in almost no time because it saves you a lot of
work.
WarpUP for PowerPC
There is one question software houses are currently asking themselves:
does it pay to port a program to the PowerPC? What makes the right
decision easier is a software-interface to the hardware which enables
PowerPC-software to use future PowerPC-developments from Amiga Inc. or
third parties without having to modify the software. This is exactly
what WarpUP offers. Through the use of a so-called
hardware-abstraction-layer (HAL) WarpUP places a layer between the
hardware and the user-applications. This layer enables
PowerPC-software to function with any PowerPC-hardware. For every
software house this is the starting gun into a new era of
PowerPC-development on the Amiga.
StormC 3.0 now also for 68k AmigaOS
The most important feature of this version is the new project
assistant which makes putting together a project with all source code
modules and libraries a matter of a few mouse clicks. The updated
StormED is now able to manage bookmarks and offers a better way to
individually extend the syntax dictionary. In the debugger, the
resource-tracking has been improved and the disassembler now is
faster, better and more Motorola compliant. The entire instruction set
and all addressing modes of the 68k CPUs are supported. This makes the
debugging even of hand-written assembly routines and ROM code much
easier.
StormWizard 2.2 for AmigaOS and p.OS
The new version of the visual GUI editor has been completely
re-worked. Almost all objects are now displayed significantly faster.
On top of that a new compatibility mode ensures that interfaces
created using StormWizard can be modified by tools such as
VisualPrefs. The fully developed functions of StormWizard 2.2 allow
easy and quick creation of complex interfaces which then can be used
with AmigaOS and p.OS

Netscape announces plans to make Next-Generation Communicator source code
available free on the Net
Bold Move To Harness Creative Power Of Thousands Of Internet
Developers; Company Makes Netscape Navigator And Communicator 4.0
Immediately Free For All Users, Seeding Market For Enterprise And
Netcenter Businesses
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 22, 1998) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced bold plans to make the
source code for the next generation of its highly popular Netscape
Communicator client software available for free licensing on the
Internet. The company plans to post the source code beginning with the
first Netscape Communicator 5.0 developer release, expected by the end
of the first quarter of 1998. This aggressive move will enable
Netscape to harness the creative power of thousands of programmers on
the Internet by incorporating their best enhancements into future
versions of Netscape's software. This strategy is designed to
accelerate development and free distribution by Netscape of future
high-quality versions of Netscape Communicator to business customers
and individuals, further seeding the market for Netscape's enterprise
solutions and Netcenter business.
In addition, the company is making its currently available Netscape
Navigator and Communicator Standard Edition 4.0 software products
immediately free for all users. With this action, Netscape makes it
easier than ever for individuals at home, at school or at work to
choose the world's most popular Internet client software as their
preferred interface to the Internet.
"The time is right for us to take the bold action of making our client
free - and we are going even further by committing to post the source
code for free for Communicator 5.0," said Jim Barksdale, Netscape's
president and chief executive officer. "By giving away the source code
for future versions, we can ignite the creative energies of the entire
Net community and fuel unprecedented levels of innovation in the
browser market. Our customers can benefit from world-class technology
advancements; the development community gains access to a whole new
market opportunity; and Netscape's core businesses benefit from the
proliferation of the market-leading client software."
Netscape plans to make Netscape Communicator 5.0 source code available
for modification and redistribution beginning later this quarter with
the first developer release of the product. The company will handle
free source distribution with a license which allows source code
modification and redistribution and provides for free availability of
source code versions, building on the heritage of the GNU Public
License (GPL), familiar to developers on the Net. Netscape intends to
create a special Web site service where all interested parties can
download the source code, post their enhancements, take part in
newsgroup discussions, and obtain and share Communicator-related
information with others in the Internet community. Netscape will also
continue to develop new technologies and offer periodic certified,
high-quality, supported releases of its Netscape Communicator and
Navigator products, incorporating some of the best features created by
this dynamic community.
The ubiquity of Netscape's client software facilitates Netscape's
strategy of linking millions of individuals to businesses. Today's
announcements will help to further proliferate Netscape's
award-winning client software which today has an installed base of
more than 68 million, providing a ready market for businesses using
Netscape's Networked Enterprise software solutions and Netscape
Netcenter services. Netscape's research indicates that in the
education market where Netscape's products are free, the Netscape
client software commands approximately 90 percent share, indicating
that users tend to choose Netscape when the choice is freely
available. Making its browser software free also will enable Netscape
to continue to drive Internet standards, maximize the number of users
on the Internet, and expand the third-party community of companies and
products that take advantage of the Netscape software platform.
Netscape has successfully shifted its business over the past year
toward enterprise software sales and to revenues from its Web site
business, and away from standalone client revenues. In the third
quarter of 1997, standalone client revenues represented approximately
18 percent of Netscape's revenue, with the rest coming from enterprise
software, services and the Web site. Preliminary results for the
fourth quarter of 1997, which Netscape announced January 5, show
standalone client revenues decreased to approximately 13 percent in
the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter of 1996 by comparison,
standalone client revenue represented approximately 45 percent of
Netscape's revenue.
In conjunction with its free client, Netscape separately announced
today that it is launching a host of enhanced products and services
that leverage its free client software to make it easy for enterprise
and individual customers to adopt Netscape solutions. The new products
and services reinforce Netscape's strategy of leveraging market
penetration of its popular client software and its busy Internet site
to seed further sales of Netscape software solutions in the home and
business markets. The new products and services include enhanced
subscription and support packages, an investment protection program
for Netscape Communicator users, new reduced pricing on Netscape's
retail and enterprise client products, new Premium Services on its
Netscape Netcenter online service and Netscape SuiteSpot server
software upgrades featuring Netscape client software.
In addition, the company separately announced the launch of an
aggressive new software distribution program called "Unlimited
Distribution" to broadly distribute its market-leading Internet client
software for free. Unlimited Distribution enables Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs),
telecommunications companies, Web content providers, publishers and
software developers to download and redistribute Netscape Communicator
and Netscape Navigator easily with "no strings attached." In addition,
beginning immediately, individual users can download Netscape
Communicator or Navigator for free, register for Netscape Netcenter

Nova Design Announces ImageFX 3.0
Nova Design, Inc., producers of the award winning ImageFX package and
the highly received Aladdin 4D package, are proud to announce that the
exciting version 3.0 upgrade to ImageFX is now available! ImageFX has
been the required graphics application for all Amiga owners and has
been a part of Video Toaster/Flyer owner's toolkits for years.
Combining painting, image file format conversion, image processing,
and special effects, ImageFX is the undisputed leader in graphics
manipulation on the Amiga.
"ImageFX 3.0 can be called the 'Users Request' upgrade as it is built
upon the input of our users.", says Bob Fisher, Vice-President in
charge of sales at Nova Design, Inc. "We've made wonderful changes to
the interface, adding instant asynchronous redrawing of your images,
larger previews that can be magnified, multiple image windows, real
image layers, and many more special effects!"
Highlights of ImageFX 3.0
The interface still follows professional standards for the Amiga and
the video and film industry with its paintbox style approach. This has
been built on in ImageFX 3.0 to allow child menus to remain open for
quick access to frequently used functions, larger effects previews
that you can zoom in and out of and move around in, font sensitivity,
multiple image windows including the ability to open multiple windows
for the same image, real image layers that allow you to compose
complex composited images that can be modified over and over with
ease, and many other improvements throughout.
Cross platform connectivity has been a top concern with ImageFX, from
its Video Toaster/Flyer support, to its wide range of image file
format support for all computer platform image formats. With this new
release ImageFX improves its Flyer support and also now gains support
for the Photoshop native file format so that layered images can be
shared from Photoshop to ImageFX. ImageFX also now directly supports
loading, and preserving, color-mapped (CMAP) image data for quick,
accurate, conversion of these formats.
Special effects have always been one of the touchstones of the power
of ImageFX. From the earliest days ImageFX pioneered bringing high-end
"Hollywood-style" special effects to the desktop with it's morphing
and warping, wire removal, lightning and fire effects. The effects in
this release extend this even further!
The all-new Clouds module allows you to generate true fractal clouds
that can animate their movement and evolve over time, via batch
processing, from one form to another. The clouds can be layered to
create three-dimensional effects and combine with custom, or supplied,
palettes to create wild plasma designs as well.
Scatter is an amazing new effect that can shatter an image into pieces
as small as a single pixel and blast them apart in many different
patterns. This can be used for artistic designs or for dramatic
transitions.
Also new in ImageFX 3.0 is Splash. Splash uses ray tracing and bump
mapping to create liquid simulations of rain, water ski surf,
gelatinous wiggles and more. The effect can be batched to animate
puddles of rain water and create highly organic transitions.
A classic effect from other computer platforms, Pagecurler, has been
added as well. This can add a cool curled page effect to the edge of
an image or make letters appear to peel off of the page!
The true gem in the new effects is called FXForge. FXForge uses simple
mathematical expressions that, when applied against each pixel in the
image, can create hundreds upon hundreds of new effects. It uses a
superset of the same technology used in Adobeń Photoshop's Filter
Factoryń plug-in and is completely compatible to formulas for effects
created for that package. Due to the overwhelming popularity of these
formulas, you can find hundreds, if not thousands, of them available
on the Internet. Experienced users can create these as well to extend
their toolkit of special effects on their own! Unique to ImageFX's
FXForge is the ability to animate the parameters and access ImageFX's
swap buffer for transitional effects as well!
Ordering the Upgrade
The upgrade from the ImageFX 2.0 through 2.6 release is only $79.95
plus shipping. ($5 in the US, $10 elsewhere) Versions of ImageFX prior
to 2.0 can be upgraded for only $124.95. You can order via
1-800-IMAGE-69 in the US and Canada or call (804) 282-1157 elsewhere.
Orders can also be faxed to (804) 282-3768 or mailed to our address.
Preorders are now being taken. ImageFX 3.0 is expected to ship after
Febuary 15th!
ImageFX will also be available, new, through your local Amiga dealer
or via mail order.

Poslije Dooma Quake, poslije Quakea - Descent!
Parallax Software Releases Descent Source Code
Ann Arbor, MI - Parallax Software, developer of the smash hits
Descent, Descent II, and Descent Maximum today announced the release
of the Descent source code to the public domain. The source code will
be made available as a free download via the Descent Developers
Resource (http://www.ladder.org/ddr/) website this Saturday.
When asked about the decision to release the source code, Parallax
founder and President Mike Kulas had this to say, "We figured a lot of
people aspiring to work in the game industry would like to see
production quality code. There are two reasons for this. One, you can
learn a lot by looking at working code. Two, people will see that you
can write a decent game without writing beautiful code."
Kevin Bentley, maintainer of the Descent Developer Resources and
author of Kahn, has agreed to support this code base through his
website at www.ladder.org/ddr. Questions or comments concerning the
code may be directed to the previous website. Please do not contact
Parallax Software, its employees or its affiliates.
Parallax Software Corporation (www.pxsoftware.com) was founded in
1993. Descent (for PC and Mac) was released in 1995. Descent (for
Playstation), Descent II (for PC & Mac), and Descent Maximum (for
Playstation) were released in 1996.

Amiga Report update from Jason Compton
Amiga Report delays
First off, no, Amiga Report has not been cancelled. We still have all
of our Amiga equipment and the same dedication to producing the
world's longest running online Amiga publication.
The problem as of late has been that the equipment and our schedules
have not been compatible with this goal.
Shortly before Christmas, in an accident of bizarre proportions, the
main Amiga Report 4000T was damaged and put out of commission. It took
over 6 weeks to get the problem fixed--which wound up being a fairly
simple damaged cable.
Since recovering the 4000T, available time to write and produce Amiga
Report has unfortunately been scarce. Both Assistant Editor Katherine
Nelson and I have been extremely busy. The bad news is that until
about mid-June, my time will be pulled in a number of very important
and time-consuming directions.
So, here's the bottom line.
Amiga Report will continue to be produced into the forseeable future.
I can't guarantee when our first issue of 1998 will be released. The
best guess I can give at this point is "March."
I also can't guarantee when 6.02 will follow. April is somewhat
unlikely. Late May-early June is more likely.
Despite the trend there's no conscious effort to pull back on AR's
production--and no, this isn't due to our move to HTML. We don't
-want- AR to be quarterly--we never consciously wanted it to be
bimonthly, or monthly even--but at times over the past couple years
that has been the only way to make it work, so that is how it has
worked.
Thank you all for your patience. You can stop sending me
panic-stricken e-mail now. :)

novosti.374vpoznanovic,
izdvojiti...
Warp Novosti - Najnovije vijesti i govorkanja o Amigi...
[24.04.98] Amiga ICQ pred izlaskom. Prestanite mailati.
Uspjeli smo na silu. Odgovoreno je. AmigaICQ je sada jako, jako blizu.
Prestanite mailati Mirabilisu.
[23.04.98] Amiga ICQ pred izlaskom. Sudjelujte svi.
Brian Gilbert, autor Amiga porta popularnog internet servisa - ICQ,
3 adrese:
Why have you not replied to Brian Gilbert's Proposal as promised. Why
aren't you supporting the Amiga platform. You have a group of people
offering to make AmigaICQ for you free of charge while also signing NDA's
to assure the security of your protocol and yet you still won't even
grant them decent communication to try and negotiate properly with you.
Naravno da ovo nećete prepisivati: koristite copy to clipboard funkciju
u browseru, i samo paste from clipboard u vašem omiljenom e-mail programu.
Tj., sgotovite to u doslovno 2 poteza mišem i standardnim [RCOMMAND][C],
[RCOMMAND][V] tipkama, za body poruke i u [To:] polje za adrese.
[23.04.98] Amiga Front 4
I dalje objavljujemo informacije o izlasku novih brojeva srpskog Amiga
časopisa za igre: Amiga Front. Ovoga puta broja 4. (Klikni na link za
download (688kB)).
[21.04.98] Power BBS - Amiga BBS!
HDD/CD-ROM. SysOp BBS-a je Šasa Lovrić, tel. broj BBS-a je 01/6527-512
(22-07h), brzina 33600 bps i FluffyNet adresa 888:1100/0. Od ostalih
zanimljivosti izdvajamo izvanredan sadržaj opremljen sa odličnim on-line
igrama, raznim informacijama, novostima i ono najvažnije - puno
sortiranih i izabranih datoteka! Power BBS također podržava i QWK i BW
offline pakete. Podržite Power BBS - neprofitabilan Amiga BBS!
[19.04.98] Amiga Front 3
I dalje objavljujemo informacije o izlasku novih brojeva srpskog Amiga
časopisa za igre: Amiga Front. Ovoga puta broja 3. (Klikni na link za
download (698kB)).
[12.04.98] WEAZEL nadmudrio CARNET!
Weazel možete skinuti i s
Planet Amineta.
Animacijski efekti uključuju: kreiranje vatre u realnom vremenu,
bljeskutanja, itd.
[02.04.98] Izašao je Wordworth 7
Digita International izdala je nedavno novu verziju popularnog Amiga
tekst procesora.
frames, snap to grid, automatic aligment i mnoga druga poboljšanja.
[25.03.98] WWWWarp ispoliran
Uvažili smo mišljenja i primjedbe mnogih Amigaša, i ispravili stvari koje
I ubuduće ćemo nastojati mijenjati
muzičku podlogu, ovisno o praznicima, i raspoloženju.
uspostaviti kontakte s Amigašima iz svoga lijepog grada, itd. Objavljene
dokazana PowerUP tehnologija i CybergraphX RTG software.
Windows 95 cut/copy/paste lister funkciju, značiti mnogo. Modul je
potpuno autonfigurabilan, a zahvaljujući intuitionu i odmah raspoloživ.
i bez reboota, i sve skupa u 1506 bytes!
(PowerUP i Cybergraphics sistemski softver).
briše sistemske datoteke "startup-sequence" i "user-startup"! Čuvajte se
spomenute arhive!
[03.03.98] Blizzardi 603e u prodaji!
PowerUP.
Uskoro se očekuju i sve brže verzije
jer Motorola i IBM proizvode 604e procesore sve do vrtoglavih 350 MHz.
Više informacija o svemu na PowerUP.

Jedna, za Amigu, vrlo važna novost...
Opera Software Announces Development of Amiga Version
13 May 1998
Following the tremendous reponse to its Project Magic initiative,
Opera Software AS today announced the development of an Amiga version
of its popular browser. The development will be carried out by
Reading, UK, based company Ramjam Consultants Ltd, under the
leadership of Tim Corringham.
"We are delighted to be involved in porting Opera to the Amiga. Opera
has an Amiga 'feel' to it even under Windows 95, so I'm confident it
will make a high-quality Amiga application, and will offer a degree of
commonality with Windows 95 that few applications achieve", says
Corringham.
"Being a long-time Amiga user myself, it provides me with great
pleasure to announce the official development of Opera for the Amiga
platform", adds Business Director for Opera Software, Jon von
Tetzchner. "It was one of our goals to make Opera available to as many
Internet users as possible, and being able to offer an Amiga version
not only adds credibility to Opera as an efficient and user-friendly
application, but also constitutes a boost to the Amiga platform."
"This step is just the logical result of Project Magic, which since
its inception has seen several thousands of users pledging their
support for Opera for platforms other than MS Windows. The Amiga
community has come out in full force, and we are proud to be able to
soon offer a product that is as advanced, efficient and frugal as the
Operating System it runs on", explains Helmar Rudolph, initiator and
manager of Project Magic for Opera Software.
Both companies aim at a release date of December 98, just in time for
the Christmas shopping season, providing a source of fun and
satisfaction for many loyal and die-hard Amiga followers.
Opera for the Amiga is expected to support the same level on
functionality as its Windows counterpart, thus putting it at the
forefront of browsers on the Amiga platform.
The price for this version is not yet established, but it is planned
to keep it in line with the Windows version.

kompanije razvijaju Amiga OS 3.5. Prva radi 68k, dok druga PPC verziju,
pojave nove Amige s MMC procesorom posebno uzevši u obzir trenutno
čini vrlo isplativom investicijom do nove Amige.
[23.09.98] IO Blix I/O kartica
Nova Amiga kartica koju proizvodi RBM Computertechnik nudi četiri
super-brza serijska porta kao i (napokon!) dva EPP/ECP kompatibilna
paralelna porta!. Dodatni moduli su u planu.
[17.09.98] WARP PowerPC Station
Zahvaljujući velikom interesu i pitanjima vezanih uz phase5 PPC kartice
pitanja o phase5 PPC karticama, PowerUP i WarpUP sofwareu i svemu ostalom
Svoje glasove u
vezi ovog prijedloga šaljite na doozanic@public.srce.hr. Realizacija ove
nove WARP Web rubrike ovisi isključivo o broju zainteresiranih vlasnika

upotrebe bilo kakvog 3D ubrzanja i sl.
QuakePPC upotrebljava
multiprocesorsku osobinu dualnih PPC kartica i upotrebljava 68k procesor
za chunky-to-planar konverziju grafike odnosno PPC procesor za
izračunavanje Quake 3D enginea tj. oba procesora rade paralelno!
vezi ponovno "oživljenog" AmigaOS-a 3.5 PPC. Također, naglašava se da će
više informacija biti dostupno slijedeći tjedan.
[29.08.98] Ekskluzivno: PowerPC 68k emulacija!
rezultati ovise o tipu aplikacije.
čemu treba uzeti u obzir da CyberStormPPC kartice imaju i 64-bitnu
memorijsku sabirnicu (dvostruko brža od one u BlizzardPPC karticama).
[29.08.98] Amiga Writer & VideoFX 2
Haage & Partner napokon izdaje svoj toliko hvaljeni tekst procesor Amiga
Writer uz novu verziju VideoFX-a! Demo verzije spomenutih programa mogu
se pronaći na spomenutom URL-u
[29.08.98] Stižu Wasted Dreams i Napalm
visokoj rezoluciji potreban prilično jaki procesor, a ni grafička kartica
nije naodmet.
pogledom odozgora), izvanredne grafike i posebno animacija likova.
[21.08.98] Amiga Inc. - supertajni razvojni detalji!
Poruka Amiga Inc. Amiga zajednici.
[21.08.98] Be Inc. demantira Amiga glasine
Predsjednik Be Inc. Jean-Louis GassÚe zanijekao je bilo kakvu vezu novog
Amiga OS-a 5.0 i Be Inc. što uključuje i bilo kakvu vezu Be Inc. s
Gatewayom. Predsjednik posebno naglašava Be Inc. neće kreirati AmigaOS
pročitati na Be newsletter.
[21.08.98] Nova Design izdaje ImageFX 3.2 Upgrade
najnoviju verziju. Nova verzija eliminira sve probleme uočene do sada,
podršku za BMP i JPEG podformate, dodatne AREXX komande, podršku za HP
SCSI ScanJet i poboljšanu podršku za Epsonove skenere itd. Update na 3.2
može se naći na Nova Design.
[21.08.98] Megavision - PRESS RELEASE
Megavision nažalost prkatično prestaje s podrškom za Amigu u Hrvatskoj.
Ostavljena je samo podrška za velike korisnike. Kompletnu izjavu za
javnost pročitajte na Megavision PRESS RELEASE
[17.08.98] AmigaStorm 2
"AmigaStorm" u Aminet search. U ovom magazinu naći ćete prilično svježe
i aktualne vijesti o igrama u pripremi, opise igara i rješenja (u broju 2
[17.08.98] GAMES GAMES GAMES!
U zadnje vrijeme bilježimo izlazak dviju komercijalnih igara - Double
Agent (kvalitetna prerada poznate logičke-arkade Spy Vs Spy) i Ultra
Violet Worlds Vorlons sofware (jednostavna i teška 2D svemirska
mješavina strategije, avanture i akcije, u izdanju Vulcan Software-a.
[17.08.98] Foundation dobio hrvatsku lokalizaciju!
Terminator env datoteci!
[13.08.98] Tornado 3D V2.0!
Izašlo je također i novo izdanje sve popularnijeg 3D programa Tornado
koji u svojoj 2.0 verziji donosi i poboljšanu PPC podršku! Više
inforacija na Tornado 3D.
[13.08.98] StormMESA - OpenGL na Amigi!
Najveća softverska Amiga tvrtka Haage&Partner ne posustaje i poboljšava
trenutno najbolju Amiga implementaciju 3D API-a OpenGL pod imenom
StormMESA.
CyberVisionPPC i BVisionPPC. Minimalni zahtjevi za 68k verziju su 68040
(sa FPU) ili 68060 kao i puno RAM-a. Neki od AGA kompatibilnih modova
zahtjevaju i ROM 3.1.
direktorijima i upotrebljavanjem search enginea, vidi se i starost
fileova u arhivi. Izuzetno korisna opcija, pogotovo za nove Amiga
korisnike, i one koji dugo nisu pregledavali recent listu. Warp zna
mnoge koje će to oduševiti.
[07.08.98] Nove pojedinosti o AmigaOS 5.0
pojedinosti o novom AmigaOS-u 5.0. OS će se sastojati od potpuno novog
kernela sa potpuno novim API-em pisanim u C-u. Uz dodatak tradicionalnih
sistemskih obilježja biti ce dodane i nove poput OpenGL-a i drugih
priznatih industrijskih standarda integriranih u sam OS.
[07.08.98] Uskoro Fusion PPC i PCx PPC!
Korisnička baza PowerPC Amiga kartica se uspješno razvija i postaje sve
brojnija zbog čega je Microcode Solutions ipak odlučio razviti PPC
verzije poznatih emulacija Macintosha i PC-a.
[04.08.98] Amiga Front 6
Izašao je šesti broj Amiga Fronta prvog, jedinog i samim tim najboljeg
Srpskog magazina u "multimedijalnom" Guide izdanju!
[02.08.98] MMC i dalje tajna....
[02.08.98] Amiga Inc. demantira i daje nove informacije
BANG efektu. Uz nisku cijenu otkrivene su i neke minimalne specifikacije
novih NG Amiga: Real-time 3D rendering, HDTV/RGB/PAL/NTSC do rezolucije
1920x1080, MPEG-II dekodiranje, Dolby, skalabilnost multipliciranjem
multimedijnih procesora, 56k modem, PCI kontroler, native Java itd.
Misteriozni MMC imati će istovremena 4 MPEG-II dekodera i sposobnost
brzine od čak 400 miliona teksturnih bit mapiranih pixela u sekundi (1.2
GB/s).
[02.08.98] Phase 5 demantira zle glasine
Wolf Dietrich, predsjednik i osnivač Amiga kompanije phase5 odlučno
demantira glasine o tome da će phase 5 bankrotirati u slijedećih 3
mjeseca. Također naglašava da se sve PowerPC kartice proizvode i prodaju
u očekivanim količinama. Izlazak CyberVisionPPC i skori izlazak (12.08)
BVisionPPC grafičkih kartica za PowerUP kartice to dokazuje.
[02.08.98] Testovi brzine i fotografije CyberVisionPPC kartica!

prvoj i nezaboravnoj ljubavi ...
;)

Evo jedne važne vijesti...
News from MAE: Amiga Inc. Reported to Support OS3.5 Update for Classic Amigas
-From Gary Peake, of Team AMIGA
It is official!!! Amica Inc. announces OS3.5 with P5 PPC board support
will be done by the first half of '99! It was not announced however,
whether the OS3.5 upgrade will use the P5 or H&P PPC software.
Developed in combination with a lot of Amiga developers, OS3.5 Upgrade
will use the current 3.1 roms and will be a CD ONLY release! There
will be no PPC version, however PPC support will be included using
either P5 or H&P PPC software, as stated above.
Highlights concerning the OS3.5 upgrade:
* RTG Support
* RTA Support
* CDFS Support
* New Interface
Plus bug fixes and updates to several areas of the OS
Purposes of the OS3.5 upgrade is to support all the advanced
hardware/software that is on the Classic Amiga market and to allow
developers to code for a higher spec Amiga Classic. This will open the
door for more and better software and hardware for the Classic Amiga
while giving developers more transition time into the NG Amiga!
There will also be a full Classic OS3.5 emulator shipping with the NG
OS so we can all start buying software again secure in the knowledge
that it will be supported and runnable with the NG Amiga!
This 3.5OS upgrade and the promise of full emulation in the NG Amiga
will smooth the transition for all Amiga users to the NG Amiga.
In the next week or so, a website will go up especially for OS3.5 and
Amiga Inc will begin releasing information on the upgrade to the Amiga
press. More details about OS3.5 will also be released in Cologne.
We are told that the highlight of the show thus far for Bill McEwen is
the modeling convention going on in the same hotel! 400 female
wannabe's apparently provided fodder for some of the oldest chat up
lines in the book as Amiga guys attempted to entice the young ladies
into discussions about Intuition and Peeks and Pokes.
Joe Torre, in his own enduring style, showed up in a giant sumo outfit
and ran around the lot persued by security. Not to be outdone, Rick
"The Canadian's Are Coming" Giannini of Asimware flattened Amiga Inc's
Darreck Lisle several times without even putting on his sumo suit!
Another grand demonstration of why the Amiga community MUST keep one
step ahead of society (and the law!).

Evo nekih novosti sa Warpovog sitea ...
Warp Novosti
Najnovije vijesti i govorkanja o Amigi...
[05.10.98]
AmigaOS 3.5 informacije
službeni standard, standardna CDFS podrška i novi interface
[01.10.98]
status: činjenica...
Amiga nema tvz. "Year 2000 problem" :-)
(i kada taj sindrom zahvati i uzdrma čitav PC svijet!) :-) Kada nastupi
Amiga Inc. home pageu. Amige sa svim ostalim novijim verzijama OS-a
(2.0-3.1) ne trebaju nikakve modifikacije. Amiga Inc. stručnjaci su
ipak ovom savršenom sustavu ipak zamijetili neke nedostatke
SPECint95........ 14,60
SPECfp95......... 9,00
MIPS............. 629,00
PowerPC603e na 240 MHz sa 16KbI+16KbD keshom:
SPECint95........ 6,40
SPECfp95......... 5,30
MIPS............. 338,40
MC68060 na 50 MHz :
MIPS............. 75,00
INTEL Pentium II na 350 sa 16KbI + 16KbD L1 + 512Kb L2 keshom:
SPECint95........ 13,90
SPECfs95......... 9,64
MIPS............. 534,61
Sto se tice brojki stvari stoje ovako. Doduse Pentium II je u
prednosti jer koristi dodatni 512Kb kesh. Mozemo pretpostaviti
kvalitetna emulacija POWER mekintosa.

Neću ništa komentarisati, pročitajte i sami donesite svoj sud.
Neutrino Realtime OS mikrokernel i Photon microGUI grafički interfejs,

Jim Collas' open letter to the community
Linux Announcement
Dear Amigans,
After months of research and in-depth discussions with all of our
technology partners we have decided to use Linux as the primary OS
kernel for the new Amiga Operating Environment (OE). I know this
decision is a shock to many of you given the previous announcements
and activities relative to QNX. This was a very complicated and
difficult decision to make and I assure you that I didn't make this
decision without a significant amount of research and deliberation. We
have been researching Linux since February but didn't finalized our
decision until several weeks ago. We were planning to communicate it
to the Amiga community in the technology brief that will be released
in the next few days.
I am pressed to communicate the Linux decision before the technology
brief because of information released by QNX in the last few days.
This information had not been reviewed or approved for release by
Amiga. In light of our Linux decision, this information is confusing
and misleading so I would like to take the time to clarify the
situation. I can't disclose any details of the Amiga/QNX discussions
because of legally binding confidentiality agreements but I can talk
to you about our decision to use the Linux kernel. I think that you
will agree that this is the right decision once you understand the
reasons for this decision.
Before I continue, I should mention that our technology decision does
not reflect negatively on QNX. I believe that QNX is a good company
with great technology. I just believe that Linux gives us a better
chance of executing our plans successfully.
The decision to use QNX as our OS partner on our next generation
multimedia convergence computer (MCC) was made late last year. When I
took over as president of Amiga in February of this year, I initiated
an in-depth review of existing Amiga plans and decisions. As president
of Amiga I had to make sure that we were defining a strategy and an
execution plan that would allow Amiga and the Amiga community to be
successful. We reviewed our strategy, architecture decisions,
technology partners, and execution plans. During this review period we
also added a number of very talented and experienced people to help us
finalize our technology and product decisions. I am confident that we
now have a solid and exciting plan that people can have confidence in.
Linux has been picking up substantial momentum over the past year as a
viable, open OS alternative in the marketplace. This momentum, the
growing commitment to Linux applications from a wide variety of
software vendors, and the growing availability of Linux device drivers
from hardware vendors, makes it a compelling candidate. Additionally,
with all of the significant component suppliers putting resources on
writing drivers for Linux it was difficult to get them to port to yet
another operating system. Using the Linux OS as a foundation for our
Amiga OE allows us to leverage a significant amount of available
software drivers and utilities. This allows us to quickly support
multiple graphics cards and other peripherals.
Given the above-mentioned advantages, we decided to do an in-depth
technical analysis of Linux to determine if it was a suitable OS
kernel for our new Amiga operating environment (OE). As we ported
parts of our higher level operating environment and AmigaObjectTM
architecture to Linux, we discovered some significant performance
advantages in the Linux kernel in areas such as distributed object
messaging across a network (up to 10X the performance of Windows NT).
Although Linux configurations can be very large in size, the core
pieces of the Linux kernel are actually very small and efficient. In
considering hardware requirements we also found companies working on
hardware components that were optimized for the Linux kernel.
Additionally, Linux is probably the most stable operating system
available in the market. After months of in-depth research we were
confident that we could build an extremely exciting next generation
Amiga based on the Linux OS kernel.
Does this mean that the next generation Amiga will not be unique?
Absolutely not! Remember that the OS kernel is only one component of
the new Amiga OE and the hardware is unique. The revolutionary nature
of the Amiga OE is in the way it extends the traditional operating
system to provide a host environment for a new class of portable
applications ľ applications that exist in a pervasive networked
computing environment. We will be integrating multiple technologies
including an efficient windowing environment and a unique user
interface.
In summary, we decided to use Linux because of the incredible momentum
and the fact that it is solid technology and a good foundation for our
new Amiga OE. Additionally, the Linux community is an impressive force
that we should be aligned with. We share many common values and
objectives with the Linux community. Using Linux as our OS kernel
allows us to build a unique and revolutionary operating environment
while leveraging the enormous momentum of Linux.
The soon to be released technology brief will further explain our
architecture and plans for integrating all of the selected technology.
Once you read it, I am confident that you will understand the
revolutionary nature of the next generation Amiga. I assure you that
Amiga and the Amiga community will be a driving force behind the next
computer revolution.
Sincerely,
Jim Collas

Subject: QNX announcement is misleading
Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 06:10:33 GMT
I am not very happy with the QNX announcement. This announcement was
neither reviewed nor approved by Amiga. Several weeks ago we made a
decision to use the Linux OS kernel instead of QNX. We were planning
to communicate this decision to the Amiga community in the technology
brief to be released in the next few days. I know this is a shock to
many people given the previous announcements and activities relative
to QNX. I apologize for the way this is being communicated but I have
been put in an awkward position. The formal announcement will be on
the Amiga web site within 12 hours. Please read this for more
information.
After months of research and in-depth discussions with our technology
partners we decided to use Linux as our OS kernel for the new Amiga
Operating Environment (OE). This was a very complicated and difficult
decision to make and I assure you that I didn't make the decision
without a significant amount of research and deliberation. We have
been researching Linux as an alternative for several months now but a
final decision wasn't made until a few weeks ago. Once you understand
the reason for the decision, I think that you will agree that it is a
good decision.
Linux has picked up a significant amount of momentum in the last year
as an viable alternative OS. In talking to the key component suppliers
it was clear that they were all putting resources on supporting Linux.
It was difficult to convince them to support yet another OS kernel.
Using the Linux kernel allows us to leverage a significant amount of
software from the Linux community.
Given the momentum, we decided to do an in-depth technical analysis of
Linux. As we ported parts of our higher level OE and AmigaObject
architecture to Linux for testing, we discovered some significant
performance advantages in the Linux kernel in areas such as
distributed object messaging across a network (up to 10X the
performance of Windows NT). This is a strategic performance advantage
for our new environment. Although Linux configurations can be very
large, the core Linux kernel and services are actually quite small and
efficient. We have also identified hardware components that are being
optimized for Linux. I am convinced that we can build an incredibly
impressive next generation Amiga based on the Linux OS kernel.
We are integrating a significnant amount of technology to make the
Amiga unique yet we will still be able to leverage drivers and also
some applications. In many ways, it's the best of both worlds.
Our soon to be released technology brief will further explain our
architecture and plans for integrating all of the selected technology.
Once you read it I am confident that you will understand the
revolutionary nature of the next Amiga and the reason why we have a
great opportunity to drive the next computer revolution.
As for QNX, I can assume that they aren't happy that they didn't get
the Amiga opportunity and they decided to confuse the issue.
Regardless of what QNX announces, the Linux OS is much more mature and
supported. It's unfortunate and I apologize again for how this got
communicated.
I look forward to getting feedback on our technology brief. I also
look forward to sharing more of our plans at WoA and AmiWest and
seeing some of you there in person.

Where do we stand?
Eight months ago we were chosen by Amiga as their foundation OS
partner. Our development group was thrilled to be part of the rebirth
of such an innovative product. To meet the challenge we knew it would
take a tremendous effort on our part. We had a team of people in place
working on our part of the Amiga NG soon after the alliance was
announced. Over the next few months we involved more and more of our
engineering resouces towards making QNX an advanced multi-media
platform. Our investment so far has been significant. These are costs
we have born ourselves.
It is clear today from Jim's letter that we were not chosen for the
next generation Amiga. Naturally we're disappointed. So, where do we
stand now? It is not our intent to confuse the Amiga community. We are
proud of what we have accomplished and want to include Amigans in what
we've achieved. I did make a promise to deliver an operating system
and I intend on keeping that promise. I don't want to split the
community, nor do I wish to engage in a war of words. I don't ask you
to "trust" me or to take me at my word. Both QNX and Amiga have
promised to deliver technology into your hands in the very near
future. I ask only that your assessment of QNX be based on what we do
and what we deliver.
Thanks for the overwhelming support we have received so far.

Gateway's Amiga prepares for return
By Jim Davis
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
July 9, 1999, 5:15 p.m. PT
Direct PC maker Gateway appears to be revving up a strategy for
decidedly un-PC like "information appliances" through its
independent subsidiary, Amiga.
Gateway's purchase of Amiga in 1997 mystified many in the computer
industry. Amiga's time in the spotlight had long since passed,
although it still had many devotees using it for its advanced
multimedia capabilities.
Two years later, however, the plan is beginning to take shape.
Software for inexpensive TV set-top boxes and Internet appliances,
including projects based around the Linux OS, will soon start to
emerge from Amiga, which will license its intellectual property to
hardware makers. Prototypes and reference designs are coming too.
Amiga has also been quietly building its executive ranks,
recruiting both high-level Gateway employees and former Apple
technology experts. The company is looking to add still more
hardware and software engineers to architect what it calls a
next-generation computing platform that it hopes will revive its
fortunes.
But more importantly, a revived Amiga will dovetail with Gateway's
overall strategy to embed itself into every aspect of the Web.
With Amiga's designs, Gateway gets an entrÚe into the nascent
market for information appliances, ranging from wireless tablets
to kitchen countertop gadgets with Net connections to digital
set-top boxes and televisions.
"Our main focus is to come up with a new operating environment
focused on the emerging information appliance market," said Jim
Collas, president of Amiga and the former senior vice president of
Product Development and Management for Gateway.
The revival process began earlier this year. Collas came over from
Gateway proper in January. Since then, the company hired a new COO
from Allied Signal, and a new chief technology officer, Rick
LeFaivre, who once was a vice president for Apple Computer's R&D
group. Another hire just this month includes Jim Miller, another
former Apple employee, who will oversee development of a new user
interface for devices using Amiga technology.
All of these new employees are eventually going to move into a new
headquarters just down the road from the Gateway headquarters in
San Diego, where they are currently housed.
All of the hubbub around Amiga comes at a time when revenues from
PCs is decreasing on a near continuous basis. Forrester Research is
predicting that consumer PC spending will peak at around $19.9
billion this year and then wane as alternatives such as intelligent
TV set-top boxes and other electronic goods such as MP3 players
become more prevalent.
Gateway has already been working to transform itself from a PC
provider to a service provider. Gateway now offers Internet service
to its customers and sells third party peripherals and software
through its own shopping service to further bolster margins.
With Amiga, the company can get into the potentially huge device
market, which may come to eclipse PCs in terms of sales and
ubiquity.
"Gateway is in a great position to have continued success in the PC
market because of its direct relationship with customers. But,
information appliances will challenge PC market growth," said
Collas.
Gateway sees Amiga as a strategic, but separate, venture.
"Disruptive technologies are best handled by independent
subsidiaries that have the autonomy to make aggressive decisions.
The speed that we are moving can't be duplicated by large
companies, even though Gateway is the least bureaucratic company I
know of."
Where Amiga is headed
Collas is only willing to give a vague outline of Amiga's
direction. And mostly, the trickle of information is being opened
to appease Amiga's loyal adherents, who likely will form the first
group of people willing to buy and write programs for its next
generation products, Collas said.
One project is a technology called AmigaObjects, which is similar
in concept to "device language" technologies being developed by a
host of companies such as Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and Sony.
With it, any device on a network can offer up its abilities to
another device and share the task of processing commands.
AmigaObjects will first run on Linux, which is gaining traction as
an alternative operating system for embedded devices, said Collas.
"There are lots of companies that have technology targeted at this
vision, but few are pulling all of it into a single comprehensive
environment," he offered.
Amiga is not trying to reinvent the wheel, he said. The company
will use Java and work with Sun's Jini, Sony and Philip's Havi, and
Microsoft's Universal Plug and Play. However, its homegrown
technology will get everything to work together in an easy-to-use
fashion. See related story.
"The future is integrating technology, not making building blocks,"
Collas said.
Concept drawings of potential information appliances that could be
powered by Amiga technology are already posted on the company's
site. Actual functioning models will be publicly shown later this
month, although they will largely be concept designs to help
hardware licensees and software developers.
A major effort to show off this technology will come around
November, about the same time the company has said it will offer up
a "multimedia convergence computer" for die-hard Amiga fans.
Eventually, the technology will show up in digital televisions,
set-top boxes, and other devices, Collas hopes. And that's where
Amiga might be able to showoff its true colors, analysts say.
Despite its age, the Amiga platform offers some inherent advantages
for a television environment, analysts say. Because it can handle
several tasks at once, unlike Microsoft's Windows 98 or Windows CE
operating systems, Amiga is well suited to multimedia environments
with simultaneous audio and video. In addition, Amiga works well
with high-resolution monitors and television screens, according to
Richard Doherty, president of Envisioneering Group.
"Ten years ago, Amiga was way ahead of its time," Doherty said.
Maybe now the industry is catching up with Amiga, but only time
will tell how the new strategy will play out.
Gateway's vision
Amiga's plans for the info appliance market, it should be noted,
are being executed independently of Gateway.
So what is Gateway's take on non-PC devices?
"Our view of world is that we think the PC is very much alive and
will be for some time. We do see an opportunity for Internet
appliances; we are absolutely interested in being in that market."
Jeff Weitzen, president of Gateway, said in an interview with CNET
News.com in May.
In Gateway's vision of the networked home, a home server connects
to the Internet and sends information out to other devices. These
servers could be based on PC technology--Intel processors and
Microsoft's Windows operating system--but could send around voice,
video and other data to a variety of devices that use other kinds
of chips and operating systems, including Linux.
Weitzen hinted that Gateway might offer its first information
appliances in 2000, although the company may also be merely acting
as a distributor for products developed by others--a category
which, technically, could be filled by Amiga. Initially, though,
Gateway is expected to emphasize sales of home networking
technology, and not every whiz-bang device that could possibly be
made.
"We would hope to have Gateway build information appliances based
on Amiga technology, but they are not obligated to do so," said
Collas. In fact, Amiga's very success depends on signing up as many
companies as possible, so Gateway would only be one of many, if
Collas has his way.

Update on the Next Generation G3 Product for the AMIGA from phase 5
digital products
July 6, 1999: The recently announced G3/G4 project is now already in
it's finalization stage. During the past six weeks, we have reviewed
the overwhelming response of the Amiga community, and the large number
of requests from many users in regards to design features. At the same
time, we have been checking the latest developments in the industry,
which have opened up some new opportunities. Based on these new
possibilitites, we have made some conceptual changes to the design of
the CYBERSTORM G3/G4 and the BLIZZARD G3/G4 boards which we will
outline hereafter.
A major change of the design of both boards is that we have decided
not to integrate SCSI and IEEE-1394 on the products as standard, and
therefore reduce the base prices of the products (we will make add-ons
available, and have also added other features, as you can read below).
We have decided to do this, as we found out that many customers have
very different demands. For example, many have been asking for
implementation of the U2W SCSI interface ľ even for the BLIZZARD G3/G4
board ľ which is more expensive and would later also cause significant
additional cost to the user in respect to cabling and adaptors. On the
other hand, other customers may only want to connect some older legacy
SCSI devices and would be happy with a cheap 8-Bit SCSI port. Some
other may not need SCSI at all, but want to pay the lowest possible
price for the step into the G3/G4 generation. Consequently, we have
decided to offer base boards without specialized I/O functionality,
but with the option for customized configurations.
The good news is, that the CYBERSTORM G3/G4 as well as the BLIZZARD
G3/G4 will both have PCI slots already on board, which will allow to
connect PCI add-ons directly. In order to make the boards fit into the
same Amiga systems as the earlier CYBERSTORM PPC and BLIZZARD 603
boards, we will be using Mini-PCI connectors, on which PCI modules in
the new Mini-PCI standard can be installed. This design allows the
users to connect Mini-PCI add-on cards directly to the CYBERSTORM
G3/G4 as well as the BLIZZARD G3/G4, without the need to spend money
for a PCI bus expansion or to worry about mechanical integration of
such a board. Developers, as well, can easily use either common
Mini-PCI cards and write drivers for those, or quickly design new
Mini-PCI cards with standard PCI chips.
Another change is the usage of standard SO-DIMMs (SDRAM) as they can
be found on modern notebooks, which also allow to design the boards in
very compact form factors, thus making the CYBERSTORM G3/G4 fit into
all A3000 and A4000 desktop and tower models (with fully installed
memory and Mini-PCI cards), and make the BLIZZARD G3/G4 fit into most
A1200 tower cases on the market and in use. As an integrated standard
I/O port, the CYBERSTORM G3/G4 as well as the BLIZZARD G3/G4 will also
have two USB ports to connect a fast growing number of inexpensive
devices.
phase 5 digital products will also be offering some cost-effective
MiniPCI add-on modules. We have a number of options which add-on
boards for I/O purposes may be developed by us, and which will be
quickly realized depending on the actual demand. It may be noted that
these options include those functions which were originally considered
to be on-board, and are now simply moved to an optional MiniPCI card.
The currently planned, optionally available modules include:
- An U2W SCSI controller w/ internal 68pin port and active
termination, for a net retail price of EURO 150 or US$160
- An Ultra SCSI controller w/ internal 50pin port and active
termination, for a net retail price of EURO 80 or US$90
- An Ultra-DMA IDE/ATA controller 66MHz with 2 ports (to support 4
devices) for a net retail price of EURO 80 or US$90
- An IEEE-1394 Controller with 2 ports at 400Mbps, for a net retail
price of EURO 100 or US$110
For any of these modules, a minimum order quantity of 250 units must
be reached, in order to justify the software and hardware realization.
If for any of these modules this quantity can not be reached, we will
inform all customers who have ordered this option. Customers can now -
in the updated ordering form - order these boards to be shipped with
their BLIZZARD G3/G4 or CYBERSTORM G3/G4 board. These boards
phase 5 digital products will also offer a next-generation gfx board
for the new accelerators. This new board, the CyberVisionNG, is
currently planned to
- incorporate a blazing fast 2D/3D graphics chip, with a powerful
128bit 3D engine
- feature a maximum resolution of 1920x1200x32 @ 72Hz
- offer full video acceleration to support full-screen, full-frame
DVD playback
and will be priced at EURO 180 or US$ 190 with 32 MB of local memory
(net retail price based on the memory prices of July 1999).
With the large amount of local memory for display and textures, it
will provide highest performance and impressive 3D capabilities which
have not been available on the Amiga ever before, at a most attractive
price point very close to that of common PC products.
A word on G4 versions:
It seems today that with the initial release of the BLIZZARD and
CYBERSTORM G3/G4 boards, the G4 processors may not be shipping in
quantities. But it is even more important that support of the improved
features of the G4 processor by Amiga software applications,
developers and tools will take time, and it is very unlikely that
wider support of these features ľ which the Amiga users would benefit
from ľ will be realized before early next year. Because of this reason
(and yet undetermined pricing and available frequencies), we have
decided to remove the G4 offer from the product list right now. We
believe that the time for the G4 will come in the year 2000, after
Amiga developers have implemented G4 support into software
applications, and availability and pricing of the G4 processors makes
them an even more attractive choice than in the very near future.
Remember, both the BLIZZARD and the CYBERSTORM G3/G4 have a socketed
processor module, which will allow for easy upgrading - and phase 5
digital products will offer attractively priced G4 modules as soon as
the G4 processors are shipping in quantities.
