Subject: DX-PEDITION TO 8Q7-LAND (MALDIVES) * UPDATE
Hi friends,
As the dates are approaching, we write this message to remember that my =
wife, Nuria (EA3AOK), and I, Josep (EA3BT), will be QRV from Maldives =
Is. as 8Q7OK and 8Q7BT (finally the licenses have arrived).
Our final working conditions are these:
* KENWOOD TS-850S
* YAESU FT-900
* Vertical antenna for 10-15-20-40-80
* Wire dipoles for 18-24
* Wire dipoles for 40-80
* G5RV rig
* Kantronics All Mode for RTTY.
Hope that nothing of this is lost during our travel !!
We must be thankful to the friend Dick (W6/G0AZT), who made a study of =
propagation for us, so we have noticed that good conditions are =
previewed, mainly to Europe and Asia, not so good to USA.
We know that 8Q is most wanted between US hams in RTTY, so don't worry, =
we'll try to listen nearly every day (not during the CQ WW ) at 14085 =
among 16-20 UTC, as this is the best time for working US.
On the other hand, there seems that there will not be any problem with =
Europe and Japan (meaning also Asia), so we'll try to be QRV for Europe =
in 15 mts , as this seems to be the best band, among 11-16 UTC, and Japan =
from 3-8 UTC
All this are just previsions. Please don't blame us if we cannot follow =
them, as we all know that "mother propagation" always surprises us. =
We'll try to do our best.
Hope to copy all of you, and give a new one.

>>> NEW IOTA COMMITTEE <<<
Previously a sub-committee of the RSGB HF Committee, the IOTA Committee is
now a full committee of the Radio Society of Great Britain. Current members
are Martin Atherton, G3ZAY (Chairman), Roger Balister, G3KMA (IOTA Manager,
ex officio member), Neville Cheadle, G3NUG (Committee Member), Dewitt
Jones, W4BAA (Committee Member, North America), Mauro Pregliasco, I1JQJ
(Committee Member, Europe), Eva Telenius-Lowe, 2E1FHJ (RSGB HQ IOTA
Co-ordinator).
>>> VALIDATION PROCEDURE <<<
During the last two years the IOTA Committeed has discussed with the
international IOTA community a proposal to introduce a validation procedure
for island operations which take place from unnumbered, rare or difficult
IOTA groups. In 1995-96 the IOTA Committee has also carried out a pilot
exercise to check the actual practicality of the proposal.
The RSGB IOTA Committee has now decided to implement the proposal on a
permanent basis. The validation procedure requires that island operators
from unnumbered IOTA groups should provide satisfactory evidence in support
of their activities. An operator should therefore provide evidence that
he/she was physically on the island, holds a licence and, where requested, a
specific landind and/or operating permit.
Until evidence is provided, an operation falls into a "provisionally
accepted" category. If evidence is not provided within four months of the
completion of the operation, the activity may be downgraded to a "long term
pending" category. Checkpoints cannot accept for credit QSL cards submitted
for operations falling into the two categories.
The same procedure also applies to operations that take place from numbered
"rare" and "difficult" islands/groups (ie. those islands/groups that
respectively are needed by at least 90% of the current IOTA members and are
known to have restrictions on landing or operationg amateur radio).
For further details on the validation procedure please refert to the RSGB
IOTA Directory and Yearbook, available from RSGB IOTA Programme, P.O.Box 9,
Potters Bar, Herts EN6 3RH, England (@ GBP 9.95 or $15 postpaid, credit cards
accepted).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
>>> IOTA REFERENCE NUMBERS ISSUED IN SEPTEMBER <<<
AF-076 5N4 GULF OF GUINEA group (NIGERIAN islands, letter "b"), issued
(provisionally and subject to further validation of the operation) following
5N4ALE's activity from Bonny Island.
NOTE ---> With reference to 5N4ALE's activity from Bonny Island, the IOTA
Committee reported that "doubts have been raised as to whether the 5N4ALE
operation was land-based. The IOTA Committee will wish to resolve this
matter satisfactorily before confirming the provisional number issued. Also
there appear to be problems with the QSL cards. Some amateurs have sent
cards to the old manager DJ2VZ. Information from Germany indicates that
DJ2VZ is QSLing but does not have any logs. Such cards would not be accepted
for IOTA. A decision on cards received direct or from DJ0KN will be made
later".

Subject: YK0B non-activity report by DL1SEB
Hello to all who looked for YK0B in vain,
today there is a report by Elia, DL1SEB, organizer and participant of the
trip to YK in our packet network, which is written in German. I don't want
to give a full translation of the whole text, which is full of accusations
and offences against Omar, YK1AO.
The group of 25 German OMs and YLs could not become QRV when they were in
Syria. Elia says that Omar was to be given ham equipment worth 7000$ as a
gift but he asked for a satellite station in addition. This request was
rejected by the group, leading to threats by Omar to disturb the planned
activities. He finally succeeded in not letting the group become QRV.
Omar had been in Friedrichshafen (Ham Radio fair) in June this year and,
according to Elia, he had been given free flight tickets, free accomodation
and food for one week.
DL1SEB expresses his deep anger about the ingratitude of Omar, YK1AO.
Elia says that they will continue their efforts to activate arabian
countries but they will try it the official ways rather than rely on
false friends.
That's a summary of the report by Elia, DL1SEB on the YK0B non-activity.

Well, I have no complaints about Omar (YK1AO). I have worked him on
various bands and he has always sent me a prompt QSL.
I think this German group are too often complaining about other
operators in DX locations. First it was complaints about the YU guys
in 3V8 "not operating in acordance with the licence". Now this
complaint about YK1AO.
Hmmm! Sometimes I wonder if they are just jealous because they
didn't get all the glory!

MACAU - MULTI-MULTI, XX9X
The South China Sea DX Team officers have noticed a planned
American assault on Bangkok, Thailand. To rebuff and challenge
this foreign invasion, another Asian multi-multi operation
will be staged with the ARM - The Amateur Radio Association of Macau.
Activity will begin Wednesday, October 23rd and continue through
Monday, October 28th. October 26 & 27 will be a multi-multi
entry in the 1996 CQ WW SSB DX Contest.
Five Yeasu FT-1000MP stations, with all necessary firepower,
will be on all bands from Taipa Island, Macau. Cushcraft has
supplied four beams that will be energized from two luxury hotels,
located side by side.
The operators and supporters of this undertaking include:
OH1KAG, OH2BH, OH2BVF, OH2PM, OH6DO, XX9AL, XX9AS, XX9KC and XX9MD.
The following frequencies may be worth watching:
1.827, 7.047, 21.270, 14.170 and 28.470 MHz.
Special event QSL cards will automatically be sent out for all QSOs.

The new motherboard, disk, Ethernet, etc., have been ordered. I expected
to see them yesterday but it looks like the supplier didn't get things
shipped Thursday as planned. I expect to see the hardware Monday. It will
take another day or two to get the new system assembled and onto the
network.
Jim (in [Prince George]) has already shipped me the disks out of the old
server. [In other words, the old server will not come back on-line
because the disks are now in Alberta, waiting for the rest of the hardware
to arrive - AD1C].
Jim, could you post something onto Usenet about the status of the server?
I only have read access to Usenet right now.

Subject: from RSGB IOTA Committee
Statement received from the RSGB IOTA Committee:
Following the commencement of the operation from Seal Island by ZS23I the
IOTA Manager G3KMA has issued the new reference number AF-077 provisionally
to the CAPE PROVINCE - SOUTH COAST group. This Seal Island, located in Mossel
Bay near Cape St Blaize, is different from the island of the same name in the
Penguin Is, off the Namibian Coast, from which several operations have taken
place in the past. QSL cards will be accepted once the Committee has received
documentation validating the operation and has confirmed the issue of the
reference number.
Details of the new validation requirements, as well as all the latest
information on the IOTA Programme, are contained in the 100 page 1997 RSGB
Directory and Yearbook, just published. Copies are available from the RSGB -
see the RSGB's World Wide Web site at http://www.rsgb.org for prices.

Subject: DP1KGI-QSLs
Hi all!
The new QSL-manager for the DP1KGI-Expedition to Ardley Island (South =
Shetlands)
is DL5EBE. Those who did already send a QSL to DL7VTS (ex. DD6UAB) will not =
have
to send a new card. All cards received via direct or via buro will be answered
soon. DP1KGI was the first and the last activity from the German Antarctic
Station "Ardley". The station, originally established by the Academy of =
Sciences
of the GDR, was taken over from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and
Marine Research. The station had to be closed last year to keep the =
regulations
of the Antarctic Contract signed by Germany.

Subject: 10 Mhz SSB in Europe ???
Hello,
Yes there is activity on 10 Mhz SSB, I checked 10.132 and there
was a OZ station calling CQ and a G-station replying...
This was quite a surprise....
I Phoned the Portuguese Telecom (ICP) and they don't know anything
about this matter... In Portugal we are only allowed to use
10100-10150 only CW... So, NO SSB on 30 meters for us yet !
Can anyone inform me of what Countries 10 Mhz SSB is already legal !

I do not know of any ocuntries that authorize SSB operation on 30m. If
anyone else does, please send me email. What I have heard on 30m was CBers
and pirate (unlicensed illegal) operators. There are many in Mexico.

It is perfectly legitimate to use CW, SSB, RTTY, Data, FAX and SSTV on 10 Mhz
in the United Kingdom under the terms of the UK Amateur Licence.
The only reason why SSB is not heard is because of the IARU Band Plan (which,
of course, has no legal standing and is simply a "gentleman's agreement"). I
cannot speak for the situation in other countries, although I suspect that
the situation is similar.
The band is allocated to amateurs on a "secondary" basis but there often
seems to be far more empty space than on 40m, where all modes seem to cohabit
peacefully.

Subject: CQ WW SSB CONTEST and SV1AFA
Hello dear dxers and contesters.
For yet another year in a row, Radio amateur association of West Greece
<<RAAWG>> will take part at the CQ WW SSB Contest this month using the known
callsign S V 1 A F A .
This year, we are fortunate enough to operate from Vlochos mountain at an
altitude of about 1000 meters! Our actual QTH will be inside the local
monastery along with the corporation of the local authorities.
This place is also famous in Greece because of its archeological value. Near
the monastery are the ruins of Thestieon acropolis which was constructed by
king Laertes of Ithaka, father of the famous Odysseus from the Greek ancient
mythology.
Our contest category will be Multi operators with a single transmiter. We hope
to be in as many logs as possible, with the help of propagation, since we QRV
in Low Power only and with loop plus vertical, longwhire antennas.
So, we shall meet at 160 to 10 meters. QSL information is via SV1CIB.
Many 73's from SV1CID.

Hi Jose,
Usually the usage of SSB on 10MHZ is reserved for emergency operations,
for saving lives and property, or to get a rare medicine.
In normal conditions all digital modes are allowed: CW, RTTY, AMTOR....

November 28. He will be using a solar powered Ten-Tec Scout.
A35, REP. OF TONGA (UPDATE). Paul, A35RK, reported to OPDX that Bob,
W7TSQ, arrived in Ha'apai on Thursday (17th). He brought a Cushcraft
R-7000+ vertical and a Force 12 C-3S. They got the R-7000+ up Friday,
and reported "it's working very well!" They are waiting for mast material
to arrive on the ferryboat, and the C-3S beam should be operational by
next weekend. At the moment, Bob is signing A35SQ and is active on
80-10, mostly SSB; while A35RK (Paul) is active on CW; both from same
QTH: Lifuka Island, Ha'apai Group (IOTA OC-169). QSL both via W7TSQ.
Bob is "tuning up" for CQWW-SSB Contest, so you'll hear him alot.
Also, Marcel, A35DM, left for Vava'u Friday and he should be active
from IOTA OC-064 by the time you read this (SSB only). QSL via ON4QM.
BY, CHINA. Mike, W5ZPA, Delta Division Representative DXAC, will be

would like to welcome Vince aboard.)
QSL NEWS AND INFORMATION....
Bart, K4CEF (member of the DXAC for the Southeastern Division),
reports the following: "Chris, ZS6EZ, reports that the ZS8IR cards
have finally been printed and are being shipped to him. He also has
full logs on his computer. The first batch will go out in about 2 weeks,
and he will then proceed to work down the remaining cards in batches,
roughly corresponding to the month in which they were received. Those
few that sent registered mail will be in the back of the queue, and will
get answered with the bureau cards-- Chris has to take leave and drive
to the post office (about 15 miles) during office hours to collect the
registered mail."
Eugene, RN9XA (ex UA9XAC, R9X), from Syktyvkar, Russia, states there
have been problems receiving QSL cards from USA QSL bureau. His new
callsign is RN9XA (prefix RN9 - Asiatic Russia, not - UN). He has been
active in 1996 as many special stations from the Komi Republic: UE9XAA

Juraj, OM2SA, indicated that he still has the log and QSLs for AP2MY,
operated by N9NC in CQWW/CW 95, and +/- some days of this date. If anyone
still needs a QSL, PLEASE send to Juraj via the bureau or direct to his
address: Sipos Juraj, OM2SA, 93013 Trhova-Hradska 550, Republic of

T8, REP. OF BELAU (ATTENTION PREFIX HUNTERS!). Jim Hood, WV5S, President
of the Oklahoma DX Association has informed the DX/Contest community of
the following statement: "In 1994, Belau (Palau) declared its independence
from the USA. Consequently, the KC6 prefix needed to be replaced by a new
unassigned prefix. The prefix T8 has been assigned to Belau.
Oklahoma DX Association members N5OK and N5CG have now activated the T8
prefix for the first time as T88T. They will be using this call in both of
the CQWW Contests. QSL to Box 88, Morris, OK 74445-0088."

KH6BZF SPECIAL PROPAGATION REPORT for the CQWW SSB DX Contest for the
weekend of October 25-27th. DX contesters will make the bands highly
active and it will appear that bands and paths normally thought to be
closed, open up and surprise you.
On the first evening propagation will be slow as we should be
recovering from an active GEOMAG period. So, work those Asia and Oceania
areas the first evening. While on the 27th (Sat/Sunday), the bands are
expected to be better. Last year at this time Solar Flux was in the
mid-to-high 80'. This year the mid 60's to low 70's will be the norm.
Note, band will close earlier and open later than last year. CU on the
bands.
Remember: Have fun.....KH6Bloomin'ZipperFlipper
3C1, EQUATORIAL GUINEA. Teo, EA6BH, and others will be active as 3C1DX
in the contest. Their activity has been cut short/delayed due to the
work stoppage in France's airports. They hope to be active from
October 24-31st.
5N, NIGERIA. Pat, 5N0T, will be signing 5N36T as a Single-Op all band
entry in the upcoming contest. The special prefix will be used until
October 31st to celebrate the 36th Anniversary of Independance of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria. QSL card as usual via Paul F2YT.
7P8, LESOTHO. The DXNS report Wolf, OE2VEL, will be active as 7P8EL in
the contest, and before/after with CW on WARC bands. QSL via OE2DYL
(direct or bureau).
8R, GUYANA. Olli, OH0XX, will operate 8R1K in the contest as a Single
Op all band entry. QSL via Suite 599, 1313 So. Military Trail,
Deerfield Beach, FL33442, U.S.A.
9Y, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO. Glenn, K6NA, will activate 9Y4H on all bands in
the contest this year. Glenn states, "Yes, I do QSL although I am a
bit behind...Please don't send second requests, you WILL get your
card! About 2,000 will go out early December. Thanks! Glenn K6NA".
A4, OMAN. Tony, A45ZN, will be acive as a Single Op in the contest. He
states 6 and 30 meters operation is not allowed in A4, but Tony thinks
there is a chance of some limited 6 meters operation soon. QSL direct.
CY0, SABLE ISLAND. Just before going to print OPDX received the word
that the CY0 team will be using CY0XX as a Multi/Multi entry in the
contest. The team will be active from October 21-29th. There will be
a total of 5 operators with an operation planned on all bands including
RTTY and 6 meters. Refer to last week's OPDX.274.
C3, ANDORRA. Look for activity by either C31LD or C31LJ. If C31LJ is
active in the contest, the entry will be SO/AB. If C31LD is active, it
will be a Multi/Single entry. QSL for C31LJ is via VE3GEJ. C31LD is
looking for a manager. (VE3HO has volunteered, but final arrangements
have not been made. Query the station before you send a card.)
CT3, MADEIRA ISLANDS. Look for Martin, DL4NAC, as CT3FN in the contest.
Look for CT3FN during the following times/frequencies: 28450 kHz -
1200z, 21350 - 0900/1500z, 14250 - 1100/2000z, 7050/7300 - 1800/2100z,
3750 - 0700/2130z and 1850 - 0200z. QSL via HB9CRV.
Also, look for Jukka, OH6LI, as CT3/OH6LI in the contest on all
bands.
FJ5, ST. BARTHELEMY. Operators (so far) N6DLU, N6LL, FJ5AB and some
others will be active as a Multi/Single entry from this Caribbean
island as FJ5AB. QSL information will be posted later.
FK, NEW CALEDONIA. Look for the special contest call FK5DX in the
contest. Operators ERIC, FK8GM, and Franck, FK8HC, will operate on
all bands, 160-10 meters (as conditions allow). QSL for FK5DX via
WB2RAJ.
HC8, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. Look for HC8N to be a Multi/Single entry activated
by WN4KKN, WX3N, VE3EJ, and HC1OT. They suggest looking for them on 160
meters around 1.840 MHz CQing on the half hour between 0600-1100z and on
75 meters anytime during the night. They may be operating split. For JA
they will make special attempts to listen split--especially around 3752
kHz. On 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, and 10 meters, they should be
easy to work. QSL via AA5BT.

Subject: Burma/Myanmar XY1U
An operation from Yangon (Rangoon) Myanmar (Burma) will take place
from 25th October 1996 until 4th November 1996 by the "JA1UT"
DX Group. This will be the 4th demonstration/operation in the
series linked to Visit Myanmar Year 1996.
It had been hoped to operate from Mandalay or Pagan on this occasion but
this was not possible, and the alternative of an operation in Yangon was
accepted.
Call signs to be used, are XY1HT, XY1VMY, and XY1U. The group consists of
mainly European, and Japanese operators. Additional operators are welcome to
contact 9M2/G3NOM.
On the first weekend , an entry will be made in the CQWW SSB contest. Also,
a parallel operation will be made on Satellite during the contest weekend.
If conditions allow a choice, a focus will be made on modes, bands, and
areas, not being targetted by the upcoming XZ1N Burma Blockbuster
DXpediton, (although that leaves little scope HI). Both expeditions are
being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Hotels
and Tourism and therefore are designed to complement each other. Watch out
initially on the usual DX frequencies.
QSL arrangements will be announced during the operation, but as a default
can be sent to G0CMM QSL manager for G3NOM DX Peditions.

For your information:
To avoid unsubscribe requests sent directly to the mailing list's address,
our mailing list manager, namely Majordomo, searchs for the string "sub"
into the subject of messages you send to the list and, if found, the
message is bounced to the list owner.
So, when sending messages to the list keep this in mind and don't put the
string "sub" into the Subject: line, neither into the first rows of the

BTW, since such messages are bounced to the list owner, if I see that the

OS4CLM Special event station 25 october til 3 november 1996
On novembre, 1th 1944 the town of Knokke was finally liberated at great
cost of Canadian Lives. Each year the fallen Canadians are remembered
with ceremonies, fesitivities and an "Canadian Liberation March" on
novembre 1st and that during a Canadian Week. Many Canadian and Belgian
veterans, VIPs and radio amateurs are participating in the events.
This year the Special Event Station OS4CLM (witch suffix stands for
Canadian Liberation March) will be for the 14th time on the ear from
friday octobre, 25th until novembre, 5th 1996.
Beside our own ham-operators the Special Event Radio Station is operated
by members of the BAFARA (Belgian Airforce Amateur Radio Ass.), by members
of the RNARS (Royal Naval Amateur Society) and by members of the BYLC
(Belgian YL Club). This year members of the Belgian IPARC section will
attend for the first time on tuesday 29 october.
Again a multi-colored OS4CLM-Award will be available to all licensed
amateurs and SWL's for any contact with this special event station.
They also can get a beautifull QSL-card. Cost of the OS4CLM-Award is
5 US$ (no checks please) or 10 IRC's, with all proceeds going to a
welfare fund. The money is used to maintain memorials and to keep
the station OS4CLM next year in the air.

JA1HGY, JA1UT, ON4AG, OZ5AAH and VE3JLP following DX information.
5T5, MAURITANIA. JA1UT and a group of operators are scheduled to visit
"Republique Islamique de Mauritanie" for a week beginning November 6th.
This is in support of the "Save Africa" aid project in cooperation with
the drivers of the famous "Paris-Dakar Motor Rally". SSTV operation is
planned in addition to the usual modes. This may be a "first time" from
5T5???. Participating members will be JA1UT, JA1UPA, and JR0CGJ. QSLs to
be handled by JA1UT.
9M8, EAST MALAYSIA (Attention 160 meters operator!). The DX News Sheet
(DXNS) reports Shin, JA2SWJ, will be active November 2-3th as 9M8HIM on
1824 kHz with 500W.
C5, THE GAMBIA. A few weeks ago, OPDX mentioned that Gary, C53HG had
left the The Gambia for Namibia. Paul, VE3JLP, (DX Editor, The Canadian
Amateur) wrote to OPDX and that states we may begin to see a lack of
activity from C5 now. Paul reports, "My daughter, who taught at the
Gambia College of Agriculture at Brikama 18 months ago, tells me that
the science teacher there, who occasionally put the college station,
C53GCA, on the air has now moved on to a new job and this station is
likely, from now on, to be gathering dust! By the way, the college
station is the one I briefly put on the air in Februaury, 1995, it was
installed by a group of VE1s a year or two before. I don't THINK there
are any other resident staions in C5, so it may soon become a pretty
rare DX." OPDX has found that C53HN still continues to be active briefly
and mainly on CW. Last spot listed on the Ohio/Penn Network was October
21st at 1842z on 14020 kHz.
FH, MAYOTTE. Denise, F6HWU, will be active as FH/F6HWU from November
9-27th. She will be operating mostly CW on all bands, and there may be
some activity on RTTY.
FR/T, TROMELIN. FR5ZU/T was heard this past week on 15 meters (21215
kHz around 1545z). His length of stay is unknown at this time. QSL via
FR5ZU.
INDIAN OCEAN DXPEDITION UPDATE. Xavier, EA3BHK, reports the papers sent
by Jon, EA2KL, and Luis, EA3ELM, by mail to 3B8 became lost. They sent
a fax two weeks ago but they must now wait for their 3B8 licenses until
next week. About their 3B9 operation, there is very bad news, at the
present time there is no chance for a 3B9 license. On Reunion Island,
they will use the CEPT license as announced. You can read about this
DXpdetion on the WEB page: http://www.ctv.es/USERS/ea3bhk/dx/indic.htm
KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND. Next weekend look for Ron, W7VWR, to be be active
probably as KH4/W7VWR from November 3-10th. Activity on CW will be 25
kHz up from bottom of the band edge and SSB operations on 3800, 7188,
14195, 18130 and 21295 kHz. QSL to CBA.
KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Nao, JA1HGY, and others will stay on Saipan from
October 31st to November 3rd for vacation, and will be active on all
bands. Look for KH0/JA4DND's to be active on 1911 kHz +/- (QSX 1824 for
DX, 3799 kHz (SSB mainly), 7007 or 7044, 10 MHz and up on the usauly DX
frequencies. QSL via JA4DND home call direct or via the bureau. Also,
look for KH0/JA1HGY to be active on 10104, 18074 and 24894 kHz (mainly
the WARC bands). QSL via JA1HGY. Other callsigns mentioned: KE6DI/KH0
(QSL via JA1BRK), WH0/WH2Q (QSL via JI1DLZ) and KH0/JR1MLU (QSL via
JR1MLU).
OX, GREENLAND. Ben, OX3IPA, Chairman of the International Police
Association Radio Club (IPARC) in Denmark, will be active from Nuuk,
Greenland, October 30th to November 16th. Activity will be mostly
CW on 160-6 meters. QSL will be good for police awards. QSL via
OZ5AAH, Preben Jakobsen, 9 Knoldager, 2670 Greve, Denmark with a SASE.
OZ, ROEMOE ISLAND (DENMARK). Ulli, DL2HEB, will be using OZ/DL2HEB/p on
IOTA EU-125. His IOTA DXpedition will be from December 22th to January
3rd, 1997. Activity will be on 80-10 meters. Check the IOTA and QRP
frequencies, especially on CW, 14040 and 14060 kHz. QSL via DL2HEB or
via the bureau.

CQWW SSB and CW contests to WX9E. All other FS5PL contacts to KF0UI
or FG5BG (NOT via KG0UI has reported).
The new QSL Manager for the DP1KGI-Expedition to Ardley Island
(South Shetlands) is DL5EBE. Those who did already send a QSL to
DL7VTS (ex. DD6UAB) will not have to send a new card. All cards
received via direct or via bureau will be answered soon. DP1KGI was
the first and the last activity from the German Antarctic Station
"Ardley". The station, originally established by the Academy of
Sciences of the GDR, was taken over from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute
for Polar and Marine Research. The station had to be closed last year
to keep the regulations of the Antarctic Contract signed by Germany.
F5TCN has received the logs for YA9XL, but only for the December 1st
to 24th, 1995 period. He is still waiting for the logs after December
24th.
Jean Michel, F6AJA, reports Gerard, F2JD/5R8EN, has been closing down
his station from Malagasy and will be returning to France at this end
of October with the last part of his log. ADDED NOTE: Gerard will be
going to Panama (HP) November 20th, for at least 6 months.
Jean Michel, F6AJA, reports he has received his 5R8FI QSL cards from
the printer, and all direct request will be mailed very soon.
F6BUM has been receiving QSLs for TO5A for February 1996. He has the
logs only for the July 96 operation.
NOT THE QSL MANAGER.... F2YT received some QSLs for D44AB. He is not
his QSL Manager.... F6EDZ received QSLs for 3B8DZ. He is not his QSL
Manager
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. On November 1, 1944, the town of Knokke was
finally liberated at great cost of Canadian lives. Each year the fallen
Canadians are remembered with ceremonies, fesitivities and a "Canadian
Liberation March" on November 1st, and during that Canadian Week. Many
Canadian and Belgian veterans, VIPs and radio amateurs, are participating
in the events.
This year, the Special Event Station, OS4CLM (which the suffix stands for
Canadian Liberation March), will be on the air for the 14th time from
Friday, October 25th, until November 5th.
The special event radio station is operated by members of the BAFARA
(Belgian Airforce Amateur Radio Ass.), by members of the RNARS (Royal
Naval Amateur Society) and by members of the BYLC (Belgian YL Club). This
year's members of the Belgian IPARC section will attend on Tuesday,
October 29th, for the first time.
A multi-colored OS4CLM-Award will be available to all licensed amateurs
and SWLs for any contact with this special event station. They also can
get a beautifull QSL-card. Cost of the OS4CLM-Award is 5 U.S. green
stamps (no checks please) or 10 IRC's, with all proceeds going to a
welfare fund. The money is used to maintain memorials and to keep
the station OS4CLM on the air next air. You can contact or listen to
OS4CLM on the following frequenties: SSB - 3685, 7045, 14145, 21245, 28545
and 144250 kHz and CW - 3515, 7012, 14020, 21020, 28020 and 144020 kHz;
also FM - 145.475 MHz. If you want more information about the Special
Event Radio Station, OS4CLM, please contact: OS4CLM, Post Box 110,
B-8300 Knokke, Belgium.
V5, NAMIBIA. Clarlie, KY0A, should have arrived in South Africa this
past Thursday, and from there he is planning to make another trip into
Namibia. He wants OPDX to inform the readers that if anyone hears
V5/ZS6YG, please QSL "only" to KY0A. Do not use the South African QSL
Bureau! Charlie will be mostly mobile with 500 watts and antennas for
the low bands and WARC bands. His operation will be CW only.
VK0, HEARD ISLAND DXPEDITION UPDATE. Carl Smith, N4AA, editor of QRZ DX,
reported this week that on October 10th, a 20 ft. container containing
gear and life support equipment for 20 people has left Oakland to be
shipped Reunion Island, the departure point for this very large
DXpedition. The team will assemble on Reunion Island during the last
week of December. On January 3, 1997, they will leave board the 300
foot French vessel "Marion Dufresne" for a 10 day sail to Crozet and
then to Heard Island. The stations will come on the air on or before
January 15th, using the callsign VK0IR. The total budget for this
DXpedition is $320,000.
XU, KAMPUCHEA (CAMBODIA). There was a report that JR1CSA and JA1SBH
were active during the first part of the month (October 9-13th) as
XU1U and XU1AO. Operations took place from the Battambong, in the north-
west part of Cambodia, and the JA ops made 500 QSOs, mostly with Europe.
QSLs should be sent to the individual operators.
XY, BURMA/MYANMAR. Another group has announced that an operation from
Yangon (Rangoon) Myanmar (Burma) will take place from October 25th through
November 4th, by the "JA1UT" DX Group. This will be the 4th demonstration
/operation in the series linked to Visit Myanmar Year 1996. They had
hoped to operate from Mandalay or Pagan on this occasion, but this was
not possible, and the alternative of an operation in Yangon was accepted.
Call signs to be used are XY1HT, XY1VMY, and XY1U. The group consists of
mainly European and Japanese operators. Additional operators are welcome
to contact 9M2/G3NOM.
On the first weekend, an entry will be made during this past weekend's

The XX9X CQ WW SSB Contest multi-multi team experienced fair overall
propagation. 10-meters was something of a surprise with more than 1,000
QSOs during the contest. Overall more than 10,000 QSOs were made during
this operating stint.
The team of OH2BVF, OH1KAG, OH2PM, OH6DO and OH2BH used four FT-1000MP
radios and light weight DXpedition type of amplifiers. All equipment
functioned well.
Please note that all XX9X QSLs for 1996 operations will handled by OH2BH at his

Many QSL requests are still coming to Hong Kong. These have been taken care
of for the present, but mail forwarding is not expected to continue for
much longer.
Following his return to Hong Kong, Pekka Holstila, OH2BVF, flew on Tuesday
morning, October 29th, directly to Cambodia for one-week stay. In Phnom
Penh he is expected to operate XU6WV. This operation will be limited to CW
only. All of the low-band antennas used at XX9X were transported to Phnom

More reports will be released after Pekka is QRV from Cambodia.

This DXpedition to Yangon, Myanmar is progressing on schedule (25th October
to 4th November 1996.)
The organiser is Ray G3NOM on behalf of the JA1UT group. JA1UT himself is
preparing another team for the 5T5 Mauritania DX Pedition linked to the
Paris-Dakar Internation Motor Rally. ( To run from 6 - 16th Nov 96).
The call-sign XY1U was used in the CQ WW SSB contest, and for Satellite and
RTTY contacts. The callsign XY1U is being used by the Japanese operators
JA1CDG (Ken), JA8RUZ(Toshi), and JP1TRJ(Hiro). QSLs for QSOs under this
call-sign should go to JA8RUZ CBA.
XY1HT is being used by the European operators G3NOM and LA7JO. This time the
QSLs should go to LA7JO CBA.
The operation is taking place from a government building in the city centre,
and unfortunately a high noise level is again being experienced. Last night
Stig LA7JO ran out a short Beveridge antenna on the roof top, and this
resulted in much better reception on 80m. We are using separate transmit and
receive antennas due to the high noise level. We are working on this noise
problem with a view to improving things for the upcoming weekend.
A reminder that the upcoming DXPedition XZ1N, 16th November onwards, will
have specialists to deal with the LF bands, including 160m. So although we
will try our best, please bear in mind that there should be large safety
net waiting.
The antennas in use are a Create 3/4 element tribander for 28/21/14, A
Butternut HF6V, an 80m inverted vee, and loops for WARC bands. Rigs are
FT890, IC735, IC706, TL922, FLl200, AL84.
