auto-moto.210obren,
u poslednjem krugu bez pobede.

Jednostavno,
nista nije moglo zaustaviti taj bolid.

F1: Hungarian GP report
That Damon Hill didn't win the Hungarian Grand Prix would come as no
surprise to anyone who has followed his season so far. That Damon Hill was
cruelly robbed of victory in an event he dominated would send most
observers looking for the men in white coats, yet this afternoon that is
exactly what happened.
Schumacher had a bad day, wrecking the new lightweight Ferrari in the
morning. At the start he managed to keep the lead, but Hill was up to
second from third on the grid by the first corner, and challenging for the
lead, with Irvine behind. Villeneuve was already down to 5th place, with
Hakkinen up to 4th. Magnussen was already off the track and heading for the
pits. Diniz and a Minardi were also involved. By the end of the first lap
Schumacher had a 1.7 second lead over Hill, who was 1.4 seconds ahead of
Irvine. By lap 2 Damon had the gap down to 1.4 seconds, and was pushing
hard, and was the fastest man on the track. Laps 3 and 4 saw Schumacher,
and then Hill trade fastest laps, with Hill only 0.6 seconds behind the
German at the end of lap 5, the following lap it was 0.3 seocnds. Behind
the leading two Villeneuve was pushing Irvine and in a rather messy move
managed to take a place. At the end of lap 8 Irvine was heading pitwards,
whilst his team-mate was resisting a hard charging Hill who was only 0.27
seconds adrift....
Whilst the Arrows was unable to do much about the Ferrari on the straights,
when it came to the corners (especially in the latter part of the lap) the
Arrows was untouchable, and so Hill piled on the pressure again and again.
In a brilliant move at the end of the pit straight Hill forced his way
through the inside of the Ferrari and took the lead. By the end of lap 11,
Hill was pulling away from Schumacher, and had a 2.6 second lead. By lap 12
it was 5.2 seconds. Hakkinen's McLaren was sending puffs of smoke from the
car, and by the end of lap 12 was out of the race. By lap 13, Schumacher
was some 8.6 seconds adrift of Hill, and into the pits, reporting a massive
inbalance in the car. He was turned around in 6 seconds. By the end of lap
15, Hill found himself with a 7.9 second lead over Villeneuve, who had
Frentzen a further 3 seconds behind. Coulthard, Herbert and Alesi made up
the rest of the top 6 - with Alesi some 22.9 seconds behind Hill. This was
an amazing result.
Villeneuve piled on the pressure onto Damon, and by lap 19 had the gap down
to 3.1 seconds. Hill was up to Verstappen and ready to lap him. The gap was
now only 2.7 seconds. Hill got by, and did the same to Diniz. By the end of
lap 22 the gap was back up to 5.1 seconds. Further back, Alesi ran wide and
let Nakano and Schumacher through. Schumacher then tried very hard, but was
unable to do much about Nakano. In fact over the next few laps the Japanese
driver pulled away from Schumacher. Villeneuve pitted from second place,
and was turned around in 11 seconds (apparantly with a stuck wheel nut),
whilst Coulthard was in and out in 7.3 seconds. The Arrows team were ready
for Hills first stop.
Hill was in and out in 8.9 seconds, and rejoined the race ahead of Herbert,
making him second, with Frentzen ahead, but yet to stop. At the end of lap
27, Hill was 19.9 seconds adrift of Frentzen, who still hadn't stopped. On
lap 28 the gap was 22.1 seconds, though all was not well with Frentzens
car, as it let out flashes of flame from the rear. He pulled into the pits
and retired, though not for this reason. The Williams fuel valve refused to
work correctly, and so the car could not be refuelled. Exit one Williams.
Hill now had his lead back, and by lap 30 had 12.2 seconds over Villeneuve.
Coulthard was was in close pursuit, with Schumacher up to 4th, and Herbert
and Irvine completing the top 6. Hill was now up to lap the rear-enders -
an unusual sight this year....
Barrichello's Stewart was out, and marshalls were using fire extinguishers
on it. By lap 33 Hill's lead was 12 seconds, whilst Schumacher was already
in for his second stop. Coulthard was now harrying Villeneuve hard, and so
Hill started to pull away again. By lap 39 it was 17 seconds. Further back
Fisichella was up to 6th place and pushing Schumacher hard for 5th.
Fisichella tried a little too hard, and as a result spun at the end of the
pit straight having made too early an attempt at the end of the previous
lap. The car stalled and retired. By lap 44 Hill was pulling his lead
further out, and it was now 21.1 seconds from Villeneuve, who had Coulthard
close behind. Herbert was some 18 seconds adrift of third place, with
Schumacher a further 10 seconds behind, who was being pushed very hard by
Nakano. Obviously the Ferrari was not a happy car.
By lap 48, the order was Hill, Villeneuve, Coulthard, Herbert, Michael
Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Irvine, Nakano (who pitted), Alesi, Katayama,
Trulli, Berger, Diniz, Verstappen, Marques and Salo. Hill continued to
push, and had a 22.4 second lead over Villeneuve as they came up to their
second stops. Coulthard pitted in 7.0 seconds, and hoped it was enough to
take second. Hill pitted the next lap in 7.9 seconds, with Villeneuve on
7.3 seconds. Villeneuve rejoined the race just behind Coulthard, who then
ran a little too wide and lost the place he had just gained. Schumacher
pitted for his third stop. Villeneuve had to work hard to fend off
Coulthard, and it was rather marginal whether it could be adjudged at
blocking. By the end of lap 53, Hill had 27 seconds over Villeneuve, who
had Coulthard close behind, with Irvine, Herbert and Michael behind them to
complete the top 6. On lap 56 came the moment everyone dreaded - an Arrows
parked. This was Diniz's Arrows, however and Hill continued to push at the
front.
The 5-8 train of the Schumacher brothers, Irvine, and Nakano was very close
with 14 laps to go. Nakano was a different man in this race. Coulthard was
suddenly off after apparantly losing his engine, and so Herbert moved up to
third. Irvine was charging, and attacking Ralf Schumacher. Hill was a
majestic 33 seconds ahead of Villeneuve. Marques was awarded a 10 second
penalty for blocking (though who was not apparant). Hill now had a 35
second lead, and all seemed to be going his way, when on lap 75 of 77 it
was reported that the throttle was failing to respond properly, followed
the following lap by a lack of gear changes. Hill swayed the car to try and
get it to work, but to no avail, and on the last lap Villeneuve took the
lead with only a few corners to go. Hill continued and managed to salvage
second place - some 9 seconds adrift of Villeneuve.

:((
Svaka mu čast.
P.S. Kad se malo odmorim i sredim utiske, šaljem jedan esej propraćen

HAPPY RETURNS
By David Phillips
Alex Zanardi made it two for two at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday,
leading 58 of 83 laps to earn his second CART win in two tries at the
picturesque road circuit. Zanardi, who dominated from start to finish here in
1996, had a harder time of it this year, trailing Team Rahal's Bryan Herta for
the first 18 laps. But he took the lead when Herta's left rear tire failed and
never looked back, beating Greg Moore and Bobby Rahal to take a commanding
lead in the PPG Cup points race.
From the outset, the Mid-Ohio weekend figured to be about tires. As they
have most of the season, Firestone enjoyed a considerable edge over Goodyear -
if not in outright speed, then in durability. Although Herta earned Goodyear's
first pole since Detroit in early June, he achieved the feat on the soft
option tires rather than the primes.
Team owner/leader Bobby Rahal opted for the primes and qualified 18th, the
schism in the Rahal camp reflecting the conundrum facing Goodyear's
increasingly restless customers.
"I tried the soft tires and they were marginal as far as durability," said
Rahal. "We've just gotta hope that the other guys' soft tires go off after ten
or fifteen laps."
Herta too hoped to avoid a repeat of an earlier experience.
"I thought the soft tire was the way to go in qualifying at Portland," he
said. "But I let myself get talked out of it. This weekend I put a premium on
qualifying; we'll work out the race strategy later."
Zanardi, meanwhile, qualified the Target/Ganassi Reynard- Honda on the
outside of the front row .026s slower than Herta and headed into the race in a
confident frame of mind.
"After five or six laps the (Firestone) tires just keep getting better and
better," he said. "I think Bryan will find out about his tires Sunday, and I
hope he finds out Firestones are the best."
It didn't look that way initially. Herta bolted to an immediate lead from
Zanardi and Moore with Gil de Ferran and Dario Franchitti heading the chase
while Mauricio Gugelmin, Christian Fittipaldi, Scott Pruett, Jimmy Vasser and
Raul Boesel rounded out the early top ten; a top ten that was missing Michael
Andretti who spun off into the grass at Turn Ten on the opening lap after
coming off second best in a wheel-banging incident with Pruett. Parker
Johnstone slowed in avoidance and was rammed by Paul Tracy, who trundled
around to retire with damaged rear suspension while the Team KOOL Green
machine dropped to the tail of the field along with Patrick Carpentier who
also took evasive action in the melee.
Several laps later, Mark Blundell's engine cut-out abruptly as he crested
the hill at Turn Five, leaving Al Unser, Jr. nowhere to go but up and over the
PacWest machine. While Blundell crept around to retire, Unser pitted and
rejoined only to fall out with overheating problems just before half distance.
"We suffered engine-related problems," said Blundell. "It was breaking down
under load. Unfortunately it cut out at the crest of the hill. Al had no
option but to go over me. I'm sorry for Al that it affected his race but there
was nothing I could do."
"I was trying to get underneath (Mark) when he slowed suddenly and I
wound-up climbing over his left rear tire," said Unser. We damaged the right
side pod (eventually leading to retirement) and ended-up with a right rear
flat. Truthfully, I was very lucky to come out of that incident with nothing
more than that."
Herta initially spurted to a lead of a few car lengths, but Zanardi and
Moore stayed close and began reeling-in the leader after half a dozen laps.
Although Zanardi filled his mirrors, Herta was non-pulsed.
"I pulled away at the start and then took it easy to save the tires," he
said. "I knew Alex would get close then but I didn't think he could pass me."
With his own mirrors filled with visions of Moore, Zanardi was in no shape
to attack. He didn't have to. Exiting Turn One on Lap 19, Herta's left rear
tire exploded, shredding much of the Shell Reynard's rear bodywork in the
process.
"As I went into Turn Five I could feel the car sit down a bit, and in Turn
One the car did it again," said Herta. "Then on the straightaway to the
Keyhole it went 'Boom' in the rear. I don't know if I ran over something of
the tire let go."
"The tire exploded without giving any sign of weakness before it happened,"
said Zanardi. "That was a bit unexpected for me but obviously more than
welcome. I know that it's not very sporting but when you're fighting for the
lead you're very pleased when those things happen because you can get in front
of somebody without having to put so much effort."
Herta ground to a halt on the back straightaway, bringing out the day's
first full course yellow. All the leaders save for Gugelmin pitted and when
the Brazilian stopped on Lap 17, Zanardi went into the lead from Moore and
Franchitti, with Fittipaldi heading a long train consisting of Pruett, Rahal,
Boesel, an impressive Michel Jourdain, Jr., Andre Ribeiro and Gualter Salles.
Andretti had recovered to run eleventh ahead of Johnstone while de Ferran
and Vasser had both dropped to the back of the field after problematic pit
stops. Vasser was forced to make a second stop owing to a loose left rear
wheel, while de Ferran spun into the grass exiting the pits and had to restart.
"Greg Moore was going by on my right," de Ferran explained. "I got a lot of
wheelspin and yanked on the steering wheel to avoid sliding into him and I
just lost it. That's all there is to it."
The early full course yellow turned the race into a tactical battle, as the
66 laps to the finish were far too many to run on just one more fuel stop
without serious full conservation measures. Such was his confidence in his
Reynard-Honda, that Zanardi threw caution to the wind after the second round
of stops around Lap 51 and began lapping at near qualifying pace in the hopes
of building up such a lead that he could make a third stop and win the race.
"Right after the first pit stop we obviously had to lean the engine out a
little bit, because we didn't know what was going to happen," said Zanardi.
"If we would have gotten a couple of full course yellows, then everybody would
have clearly had enough fuel to go to the end on two stops. But after we were
running and running and running it became clear that wasn't going to be the
case. So we decided to go back to full rich and started to push really hard.
"Our decision was also related to the fact that our equipment was performing
very well...Even when we were leaning out the engine a little bit we kept
pulling away from Greg, and that was fantastic. Because we had the advantage
of the Firestones, but not on Greg because he was running the same tires. So I
said to 'Chip, 'I've got much more in my pocket. Let me go.' The following lap
I turned the fastest lap of the race."
In contrast, Moore took the conservative route and slowed his pace in order
to make the distance on two stops.
"I had to conserve fuel dramatically," said Moore. "I was backing-off going
into Turn One, backing-off up into the Keyhole, backing-off down the back
straightaway, and short shifting everywhere too."
Franchitti too slowed his pace but ran an uncontested third well clear of a
close battle between Pruett and Rahal with Boesel running ahead of terrific
battle between Gualter Salles, Andretti, Vasser and de Ferran, the defending
PPG Cup champ having outfumbled the Walker driver in traffic.
"We were following Arnd Meier," said de Ferran. "I don't know what he was
thinking racing us when he was two laps down. Coming into Turn Four he chopped
Michael and he had to slam on the brakes. I had to slam on the brakes to avoid
hitting Michael and Jimmy just came around me on the outside."
Earlier, Fittipaldi's snakebitten season continued to unravel when he
dropped out of a useful fourth place with a broken transmission. Next to go
was the equally unfortunate Salles, whose Davis Racing Reynard sputtered to a
halt in the Esses with electrical trouble on Lap 59.
Over the next dozen laps, Zanardi drove away from Moore to the tune of two
seconds a lap, stretching the margin to 25 seconds by Lap 68. Franchitti held
onto third, albeit under increasing pressure from Pruett and Rahal, while
Boesel, Andretti, Vasser and de Ferran continued running nose to tail just
ahead of Ribeiro and Jourdain.
"We thought there would be a longer yellow towards the end," said Moore.
"It's unfortunate. Maybe we should have run a three stop strategy and run rich
the whole way, but hindsight's a beautiful thing. Next year we'll look at this
race and think about a three stop strategy. But last year a two stop strategy
worked out OK."
Moore did get one more full course yellow, albeit just for three laps, when
Jourdain spun the Herdez Reynard to a stop in he grass on the exit of Turn
Four, spoiling an otherwise excellent drive. Pruett, having gotten a short
fuel load on his second stop, pitted on Lap 69 moments before the full course
yellow was declared and thus saw his hopes of a top three finish dashed.
Two laps later Zanardi dove into the pits for a splash of fuel and rejoined
without losing the lead to Moore. Also stopping was Franchitti, who dropped
all the way from third to seventh as Rahal, Boesel, Vasser and de Ferran
droned past on their two stop strategies. With Andretti and Ribeiro pitting as
well, the restart at Lap 73 Zanardi led from Moore, Rahal, Boesel, Vasser, de
Ferran and Franchitti with Pruett eighth ahead of Gugelmin, Andretti and
Ribeiro while Johnstone ran a lap down in twelfth, his car still suffering the
effects of its first lap battering.
The remaining laps wound-down in rather uneventful fashion, as Zanardi had
both the speed, the fuel and the tires to win as he pleased while Moore let
Rahal get no closer than a couple of seconds. Boesel gradually edged away from
a fuel conscious Vasser and de Ferran while Franchitti's luckless season took
a couple of turns for the worse.
First the Scotsman found his car bottoming on its third set of tires, a
situation that enabled Gugelmin to make short work of the Hogan
Reynard-Mercedes. Worse yet, Franchitti's has not taken-on enough fuel on its
third stop to make the finish, necessitating a fourth stop that dropped him
behind Andretti, Pruett and Ribeiro at the finish.
Zanardi slowed in the final laps and crossed the finish line 4.8s ahead of
Moore, while Rahal's conservative tire strategy enabled him to work his way up
to third place.
"I guess we look like geniuses now because we chose the harder compound
tires," said Rahal.
Meanwhile, Zanardi is a man who increasingly looks like he will be the 1997
PPG Cup champion. 31 points behind Paul Tracy after the Portland race in
mid-June, Zanardi has now moved to a 27 point advantage over the Canadian (a
casualty of a first lap scuffle at Mid-Ohio) thanks to taking three wins and a
second place in the past four events.
"I know it's a long way (to the end of the season)," said Zanardi. "We've
had four fantastic races, and my challenger had four bad races. In motor
racing it comes and goes very quickly, so now it is time that we put 200% of
our effort in order to try to keep it going right for us.
"Today was probably THE time when we really showed what it takes to win the
championship. Concentration from everybody, from the guys that owns the team -
Mr. Ganassi - the guy who sweeps the ground at the shop. If we can keep doing
this kind of job I am very happy, whatever would happen, even if we would get
unlucky and we lose races and the championship, I would still be happy because
I know we have done our very best."
With Zanardi the defending pole-sitter at three of the four remaining
events, there may be no stopping the return of the PPG Cup to Target-Ganassi
Racing.

Zanardi On A Championship Winning Pace
CART Online (August 11) -- Alex Zanardi's (Target Reynard Honda) victory in
the Miller 200 was his third in the past four PPG CART World Series events,
but even more impressively it was his seventh in 29 career starts, a 24
percent success ratio. Zanardi, who owns a series-high fourth victories this
season, also has led 16 of the past 21 events, dating back to Portland in June
of 1996.
Zanardi's Target/Chip Ganassi Racing team has won 11 of the last 29 PPG CART
World Series events, including Zanardi's seven and four more from teammate
Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda). Zanardi is the fourth consecutive driver
to win back-to-back Miller 200 titles, following Michael Andretti (1990-91),
Emerson Fittipaldi (1992-93) and Al Unser Jr. (1994-95).
Zanardi leads the PPG CART World Series in every category with the exception
of laps led, which is held by Paul Tracy (336 in the Marlboro Penske
Mercedes). Zanardi leads in pole positions (3), races finished (12), times led
(15), laps completed (1,697) and miles completed (2,719.851).
Zanardi also continues a tradition which has seen a driver whose surname ends
in the letter "i" win 10 of the past 16 events at Mid-Ohio. Teo Fabi (1983,
'89), Mario Andretti (1984), Fittipaldi (1988, '92, '93), Michael Andretti
(1992, '93) and Zanardi have contributed to the total.
Zanardi's Ohio double, with wins at Cleveland and Mid-Ohio, marked the fourth
time in the '90s that a driver has doubled up in the Buckeye state. Michael
Andretti (1991), Fittipaldi (1992) and Unser Jr. (1994) were the first three.

Ferrari superioran???

F1: Hungarian GP winners' press conference
Q. Jacques, congratulations on your fifth victory of the
season. Did you think that everything was lost when you
fell back to fifth place at the first corner?
JV: It wasn't looking good, but this is always a long race
with lots of things happening, like they usually do at
Monaco, and I knew that the tyres would be marginal. So
I just stayed where I was, watching the guys in front
pushing and having their battles until they blistered
their tyres. And sure enough, after ten laps their
tyres had blistered. Then I just had to wait a little
before I made my move. My first set of tyres was good
and I could keep up with him, but as soon as I had made
my first pit stop the second set blistered. I did a few
slow laps [to bring them up to temperature] but that
wasn't enough and I blistered the left rear a little
bit. That forced me to slow down and fight off David
until the second pit stop.
Q. At one moment you were ahead of Michael Schumacher, who
almost immediately went into the pits. Was that a sweet
moment?
JV: We had made a fair guess that he would make three pit
stops. I could see his tyres, too, and there was no way
he could have done more laps the way he was. Even if I
had not overtaken him, he would have stopped then
anyway.
Q. Your first pit stop took 11 seconds, which is quite
long. Do you know what happened there?
JV: Yes, it was a little bit long, but I don't know why. I
am happy that it was Damon in front and not anyone
else. For the last 15 laps I was thinking there was a
good chance that Damon wouldn't finish the race, but he
was actually going on and on. My hopes had gone down to
nothing until the last two laps, when the team told me
he was slowing down a lot. So I started pushing again,
and when I got close to him he was moving left and
right which is normal on the last lap and when he moved
over on me I went on the grass because there was no way
I was going to lift ...
Q. Was David Coulthard putting a lot of pressure on you?
JV: Yes, because his tyres held up pretty well and he was
pushing hard. Somehow we were doing the same lap times,
so as long as there was no traffic then it was OK: even
with my tyres blistered it was no problem keeping him
behind me. It's a shame that HeinzHarald had a car
problem, because he was on the harder tyres and he
would not have had the blistering problems that I did.
Q. We saw you congratulate Damon. What did you say to him?
JV: I told him it was amazing to see him up here. You know,
he was worth a win today: he drove really well and he
was flying. It's a shame for him. But as far as the
whole Williams team and I are concerned it's a much
better result this way because we are fighting for the
championship.
Q. It's great to see you back, Damon. That was a lively
start to the race for you, wasn't it?
DH: I got a good start and I was able to stay close to
Michael. But I could see from early in the race that he
had blistered his tyres and was going to have a
problem. Because of that I was able to pass him quite
easily into the first corner. Then with a clear track I
knew I had to capitalise on my advantage. Everything
went beautifully, I managed to stay in front of Jacques
and pull away from him when I wanted to. The tyres
stayed good and in the last three laps I was beginning
to think about winding down but I didn't expect to have
to wind down as much as I did when the car gave
trouble. The first I knew of it was with about three
laps to go when I had a problem with the throttle. It
is operated hydraulically and the throttle was just an
indication of a general hydraulic problem which also
affected the gears. When the gears started to give
trouble I couldn't shift and the throttle didn't work
either.
Q. In which gear were you stuck?
DH: At one point I was stuck in second. I managed to get it
into third, but that was the end because it was a case
of the throttle working when it wanted to do.
Unfortunately these things get out of your control:
when you can't use the gears or the throttle, that is
the end of the story. It stopped about three times and
I am frankly amazed that I was able to get to the
finish because I thought it was going to leave me
parked. But it picked up at the last second, so I have
to say I am really pleased to have finished second.
Q. Jacques has mentioned the blisters that some of the
other drivers have had. Did you have any worries about
your tyres?
DH: Our tyres have been fine all weekend. Fantastic!
Q. Johnny, how easy was it for you after you got in front
of the Benettons and managed to join to group fighting
for second place?
JH: It wasn't too easy. But it was a good first corner for
me and I knew it would be important for me to get in
front of at least one of the Benettons. In fact I was
fortunate to get ahead of them both, which allowed me a
chance of keeping up with everyone else. We knew before
the race that we would be very hard on tyres, and in a
way it was fortunate for me that Michael was holding up
so many others in the first stint because otherwise I
would not have been able to save my tyres. I knew that
[on an open track] they would have blistered and fallen
apart. It was a matter of keeping them together. I have
had experience of being stuck in the traffic already
this year, in Barcelona and Canada, which was
worthwhile experience.

itd?
Ę? istaci), a Schumacher Ferrari.
Svasta...
Pa nema teorije jer bih ja pobedio i peške nekoga u fići. ;) I poređenje

Jesi ti gledao prenos

Posle trke sam ušao u box, i video gume, sve su bile više-manje iste,

Btw, jesi li ti uopšte gledao trku?

IT AIN'T OVER TILL IT'S OVER!
By Ned Wicker
There is no certainty for victory at Road America, and if you don't believe
that, just ask Al Unser Jr. Just a year ago, Unser was on his way to the top
of the victory podium, just a couple of turns from the end of the race when
suddenly, and without warning, his Mercedes-Benz engine let go, sending
billows of white smoke high into the air. It was a heartbreaking moment for
Unser, but a moment of joy for Michael Andretti, who saw both Unser and his
teammate, Christian Fittipaldi, fail at the end. He went from third to first
and later said it "was the luckiest race of my career."
But it wasn't always a favorable sequence of events for Michael. In 1989,
for example, he ran out of fuel in Canada Corner and Danny Sullivan sped past
to claim victory, after Michael made a quick stop for fuel to finish the race.
The only certainty going into this weekend's Texaco/Havoline 200 is Alex
Zanardi's lead in the PPG Cup point standings. He holds a 148-121 lead over
Paul Tracy, meaning no matter what happens this weekend, he'll lead going into
Vancouver.
"We've had four fantastic races," said Zanardi, who would have had four wins
had it not been for a second in Toronto. "In motor racing it comes and it
goes. In these races what you need is a little bit of luck, and we obviously
have had it. We as a team really showed what it takes to win a championship.
My boys in the pits have been the best, the fastest crew in the business."
While Zanardi has won three times in the last four races (Cleveland,
Michigan, Mid-Ohio), Tracy has been struggling to get any kind of a result
recently. He was involved in a first-lap incident at Mid-Ohio, but had a
fourth place at Michigan. Still, the magic which propelled him to
three-straight victories early this year seems to be gone. The Penske cars,
lack over-all grip and John Travis, who is designing the 98 car, promises
significant changes.
"We tested there a few weeks ago," said Tracy, "jut before the motorcycle
race and the Marlboro car ran real well, so hopefully, the rubber that's been
laid down from the motorcycle race won't upset the balance of our car."
Unser has been asked repeatedly about his last span of 30 races without a
win.
"There isn't any one reason for this winless streak, it's a combination of
many things," Unser explained. "The level of competition in CART is stronger
than it's ever been. I haven't finished seven of the 13 races this season
because of mechanical failures. We're all doing the best we can, but I'm more
frustrated than anyone."
Meanwhile, Gil de Ferran has been scoring consistently and holds third place
with 116 points. If Zanardi goes flat (and don't count on it), de Ferran is in
a good position to make a run at the PPG Cup.
"We've raced there twice and I have been on the front row both times," said
de Ferran when asked about Road America. "We just had a test there on the 29th
and 30th of July, during which we were the fastest. Given all those
ingredients, we should have a successful weekend."
WHO'S HOT:
-- Alex Zanardi...three wins and the point lead, and there isn't any sign of
a let-up at target/Chip Ganassi Racing.
-- Don't look now, but Michel Jourdain Jr. and Payton/Coyne have done well
with their new Reynard. In each of the last five races, Jourdain has bettered
his qualifying position. Watch him this weekend.
WHO'S NOT:
-- Team Penske. They can't buy a break, as both Paul Tracy and Al Unser Jr.
retired early at Mid-Ohio with a variety of maladies.
-- Goodyear tires. Firestones have won seven straight races. The last
Goodyear race win was at Gateway on May 24.

Texaco/Havoline 200 -- What They Are Saying
CART Online (August 13) -- What PPG Cup drivers are saying about this
weekend's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (Live
on ESPN, Sunday, August 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET).
PAUL TRACY (Marlboro Penske Mercedes), on his enjoyment of Road America:
"Elkhart Lake has always been one of my favorite tracks. We've always run well
there and I've finished on the podium a couple of times. I think it's going to
be a good race. We tested there a few weeks ago, just before the motorcycle
race, and the Marlboro car ran real well, so hopefully, the rubber that's been
laid down from the motorcycle race won't upset the balance of our car. We
really need a podium finish to stay in the fight for the championship;
hopefully this will come at Road America. We're getting to town on Monday
night and doing a photo shoot all day Tuesday with Men's Journal. So we'll
have some free time before the race to relax and take advantage of the great
surroundings."
GIL de FERRAN (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda), on past success at
Road America: "We've raced there twice and I was on the front row both times.
We just had a test there on the 29th and 30th of July, during which we were
the fastest. Given all of those ingredients, we should have a successful
weekend."
GREG MOORE (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes), on putting last year's
experience at Road America to work: "I'm really looking forward to the
Texaco/Havoline race at Elkhart Lake. Last year was my first season with CART
on that track and the learning curve was quite steep. We did well in testing
earlier this year, so I think our chances are quite good to get better results
than last year [when Moore finished 23rd], starting with qualifying. The mix
of long straights and fast turns seems to suit my car extremely well. After
our string of bad luck in the three races previous to Mid-Ohio, where we
finished second, I'm looking forward to the next race."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford), on Road America and his
success there: "What I love about Road America is just about everything. I
really don't have a favorite part. It's a race that has just about everything.
If you were going to build a road course, you would build it like Road
America. I really enjoy driving the course. The race last year was one of
the luckiest of my career. I've had a few lucky wins in my career but my
luckiest win was at Road America last year. Winning it the way we did was so
unexpected. First, Al [Unser] Jr.'s team did a great job in the pits. They got
out ahead of us. It basically came down to track position at that time because
we were so equal in terms of speed. Al, Christian [Fittipaldi] and I were all
right there together when we came out of the pits. That's the way the race
should have ended up, but it didn't. All of a sudden, I'm in second place
after Christian's engine blew with six laps to go. I thought 'Wow, I'm going
to finish second!' And then Al's car went up in smoke. It [the victory] was a
strange feeling. I felt bad for Al because I've been there. At that very
corner, I was leading the last lap in 1989 and I ran out of fuel. I knew
exactly how he felt and it's not a good feeling. I've lost some [races] that
way, so it was good to get one back. That one was very lucky. Still, it was
personally gratifying to win the race since it is sponsored by
Texaco/Havoline, which also sponsors my car. It was a big surprise for
everybody. We could use another surprise like that right about now. Elkhart
Lake is a beautiful part of the country. There are some nice lakes to play on.
Last year we went water skiing. There is also a nice golf course near the
track. Most of the people at Texaco like to play golf. Maybe that's why they
sponsor the race. A lot of executives come in town for the race and get in a
round of golf while they're in town. It's a great weekend for them, especially
if we win."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI (Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford), on last year's
disappointment: "I really wanted to win the Texaco/Havoline 200 last year. Not
only because I wanted to win my first race, but also because it would have
changed the championship for me. I think it was the single most important race
for me last year because of that reason. Michael ended up finishing second and
I finished fifth in the PPG Cup. With a win at Road America, I could have
finished much higher. It was the ultimate heartbreaker! What was my first
thought when the engine went? I couldn't believe it. My heart sank to my feet.
But life continues. If I would have finished the race, the standings for the
championship would have been different. But you can't work that way. If, if,
if - then everyone would be champion. Obviously, I was upset, but you have to
raise your head and go for the next race. A lot has happened since that loss
last year and I have learned to put things into perspective. Road America is a
very challenging place for a driver because of the four-mile long lap. For you
to put all the corners together perfectly and also put together a fast lap is
very difficult. To put together a good lap is challenging at every track, but,
to put together a good four-mile lap at Road America is the ultimate. At the
same time, I really enjoy the track. It's a real driver's circuit. On race
day, we had a record number of fans there cheering last year. It was quite a
sight driving around the course and having all the fans on the hills waving
and cheering you on. The atmosphere is a little like a Formula One race. By
the time I race at Road America, all of my bad luck should be behind me. We've
run strong in every race since I came back. We've just had some bad luck.
Michael [Andretti] scored the first win for the Swift chassis at Homestead. I
can't think of a better place to score my first win and the first road course
win for the Swift than at Road America. I'm due!"
On his wild ride back to the pits with Andretti after the checkered flag last
year: "I was watching the end of the race while I was stuck beside the track.
I saw Al [Unser] Jr.'s engine blow right in front of me. After the race,
Michael stopped on the track to give me a ride back to the pits. I was on the
sidepod, holding onto the roll hoop. I was punching Michael because he was
driving so quick and I was almost falling off of the car. He didn't realize
how quick he was going because he was completely strapped up in the car and
driving in first gear, but very slow, and I was holding on for dear life. I
was hitting him on the shoulders to try to make him go slower, but I think he
thought I was congratulating him. The cars aren't meant to be passenger cars.
I know that for sure now. It is definitely the last time that I will be a
passenger on his race car. You could say it was the ride of my life."
Andretti: "When I picked Christian up, he kept patting me on the chest. I
thought, 'All right, yeah, thanks!' I thought he was congratulating me. And
really, he was trying to get me to slow down because he was hanging on for
dear life. I felt like I was crawling. It was pretty funny. He probably won't
even get in a real car with me now."
MAX PAPIS (MCI Reynard Toyota), on last year's success at Road America: "We've
just finished testing at Road America. I really love to go there because it's
an amazing circuit - one of the nicest in the United States. The natural
surroundings are great and it's a real pleasure to go there every time. I have
good memories of that circuit from last year. It was only my second CART race
and I finished ninth, which is my second-best finish with the MCI Racing team.
I have a lot of hope to do just as well when we return there this year. We
should have a little bit of improvement in the engine and if we can really
stay together, then there's hope that we can improve on my best-ever
[finishing] position in the CART series [an eighth at this year's U.S. 500
Presented by Toyota]. It would be great if I could have another strong race
where I scored my first points."
AL UNSER JR. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes), assessing the PPG Cup championship
race: "I'm not giving up on the PPG Cup championship, but for me it would take
a miracle. Paul [Tracy] is Marlboro Team Penske's best shot and if I can't win
the championship, I hope Paul does. The great thing about a two-car team is
that we can both work together, sometimes in different directions, and benefit
from our collective information. I've told the team that they should use me
whenever they can to try out things on the car that we're unsure of. We don't
want to take Paul's car and risk detuning it or risk him losing any points. We
need to keep him in a position to win."
On not having won since 1995 at Vancouver, a span of 30 races: "I've been
asked this question so much lately. There isn't any one reason for this
winless streak. It's a combination of many things. The Marlboro cars aren't
working that well right now. The level of competition in the CART series is
stronger than it's ever been. I also haven't finished seven of the 13 races
we've run this year, six because of mechanical failures. We're all doing the
best we can and we're not giving up. I'm more frustrated than anyone. It
seems that everyone is trying to find one thing to blame it on. Because I
drive for the top car owner [Roger Penske] and one of the best sponsors
[Marlboro] in the business, people feel that I should be out there winning all
the time, and it's me who has a problem because I haven't won. If there was a
problem, either personal or professional, I'd be gone. I'd be fired. Roger
hasn't given me any indication that the team doesn't want me any longer and I
have no desire to go race for anyone else or in any other series. Marlboro
Team Penske is the best in the business and I hope to be here a long time. I
haven't changed my desire for winning since the day I got in an Indy car over
16 years ago. If you try forcing a victory, it won't come. I don't feel any
different either, and my lifestyle hasn't changed since I was a rookie, and it
won't. I've had losing streaks before. Racing is fickle and my dad always told
me, when you're hot, you're hot, and the next day, you're not. And I'm not
right now. We'll light the burner again and we'll get it going strong. I know
it's been quite awhile since I've pulled into victory lane, but my drought [30
races] still isn't as long as [Dale] Earnhardt's [47 races]!"
BRYAN HERTA (Shell Reynard Ford), on continuing to chase his first CART
victory: "They say the first one's the toughest, and it certainly seems that
way in my case. Close just doesn't get it done. We had the car to beat at
Mid-Ohio. We played the strategy right and drove smart, yet here we sit
without the win. There's absolutely no logic to that in my mind. We can't work
any harder. We can't raise our expectations any higher. We'll just keep
putting good, reliable cars on the track each week and stay focused. Other
than that, I'm out of answers."
GUALTER SALLES (INDUSVAL Reynard Ford), on his debut at Road America: "I took
a few slow laps to drive around the circuit so I could learn it, but even
going slow, I was in awe of the place. Once we started going fast - and this
place is very fast - I fell in love with Road America. It is easily my
favorite race track in America and I'm really looking forward to racing at the
Texaco/Havoline 200. The track has such a variety of slow, medium and fast
corners, with extremely long straights, so there are lots of overtaking
opportunities, but the track is so wide open that I really enjoy driving Road
America. Learning Road America at a test session is one less task we have to
do when practice starts on Friday. As a new driver, any chance I get to drive
the INDUSVAL-Marlboro Reynard Ford Cosworth is important because I'm still
learning about the car and the team is always finding something new to test.
The more time I have in the car, the better driver I will be and that means we
can start going fast as soon as practice opens. CART racing is so competitive
now that if you're not running the same times as the leaders, you're not going
to be able to compete for the pole or the win. I want to find that last second
and be able to compete."

Road America's Traditional Dramatics Just The Ticket For Zanardi's PPG Cup
Pursuers
CART Online (August 13) -- It would appear that it will take something
dramatic to thwart Alex Zanardi's pursuit of his first PPG Cup championship.
His pursuers can draw encouragement from the fact that the PPG CART World
Series next visits the site of one of its most dramatic finishes of last
season.
Heading into Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake,
Wis. (3:30 p.m. ET, live, ESPN), Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) holds a
148-121 lead over Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) in the PPG Cup race.
With a maximum of 22 points available to Sunday's winner, Zanardi can't be
caught this weekend.
At the same time, Zanardi, who won the pole and finished third at Road America
last year, is certainly aware that there is no such thing as a sure thing.
That was vividly demonstrated by the finish of last year's Texaco/Havoline
200, when Al Unser Jr., leading comfortably on the final lap, lost power less
than a mile from the checkered flag and handed the victory to Michael Andretti.
Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) is one of Zanardi's hunters,
standing fifth in the PPG Cup race with 108 points and three career victories
at Road America (1990 and '91 in addition to last year) to his credit. Unser
Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) is out of the championship chase, but trying to
end a winless streak which has reached 30 races.
Meanwhile, Zanardi's closest pursuers all have reason for optimism as they
head to Road America. Tracy (1993) is the only other driver in the field who
has previously won on the meandering, four-mile permanent road course. He also
won consecutive poles there from 1992-94.
Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda), third with 116
points, owns second-place qualifying efforts in his only two career
appearances at Road America and has scored in nine of the past 10 PPG CART
World Series events. Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes), fourth
with 111 points, comes off a career-best finish on a permanent road circuit
with last week's runner-up effort in the Miller 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course.
Team Rahal comes to Elkhart Lake off a promising Mid-Ohio performance which
saw Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) win his second career pole position and
his first-ever on a road course, while Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford)
earned his first podium finish of the season with a strong drive to third
place. He finished second to Andretti at last year's Texaco/Havoline 200 and
Herta was fifth.
Zanardi's teammate, defending PPG Cup champion Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard
Honda) finished fifth at Mid-Ohio, his first top-five finish since Detroit,
five races earlier. He was sixth at last year's Texaco/Havoline 200. Brahma
Sports Team teammates Raul Boesel (Brahma Reynard Ford) and Scott Pruett
(Brahma Reynard Ford) finished fourth and ninth, respectively at Mid-Ohio. It
was the seventh time this season they have finished in the points together,
but only the second time in six events since Milwaukee.
Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes) has put together a consistent
season which includes 16 consecutive top-10 qualifying efforts since last year
at Road America and nine points-producing finishes in 13 starts this season.
PacWest Racing Group teammate Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) will
be looking for a return to the points after a string of four consecutive
points-paying efforts, highlighted by his first career victories at Portland
and Toronto, came to an end with his 26th-place finish at Mid-Ohio.
Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford) led the first 15 laps at
Road America last season, but suffered engine failure five laps from the
finish while battling with the frontrunners. Tasman Motorsports Group
teammates Andre Ribeiro (LCI/Marlboro Reynard Honda) and Adrian Fernandez
(Tecate/Quaker State Lola Honda) have both enjoyed top-five successes at Road
America, Ribeiro in '95 (fourth) and Fernandez in '94 (fifth).
Toyota power enjoyed its finest hour of 1996 at Road America as Juan Fangio II
(Castrol-Jockey Reynard Toyota) and Max Papis (MCI Reynard Toyota) finished
eighth and ninth, respectively. Fangio's effort remains the best road-course
finish for Toyota in two years of PPG CART World Series competition. Papis
recorded Toyota's best oval finish with an eighth at this year's U.S. 500
Presented by Toyota.
Michel Jourdain Jr. (Herdez/Viva Mexico! Reynard Ford) has improved his
qualifying effort in each of the last five races, leading to a career-best
14th-place start at Mid-Ohio. Parker Johnstone (KOOL Reynard Honda) has scored
PPG Cup points in his last four road-course starts.
The Rookie of the Year race continues to tighten methodically. Patrick
Carpentier (Alumax Reynard Mercedes) leads with 27 points, but Dario
Franchitti (Hogan Motor Leasing Inc. Reynard Mercedes) picked up two points
for his 11th-place finish at Mid-Ohio and now has 10. Gualter Salles (INDUSVAL
Reynard Ford), Arnd Meier (J.A.G./Marcelo/Hawaiian Tropic Lola Ford) and
Charlie Nearburg (Nearburg Exploration Reynard Ford) join Carpentier and
Franchitti as rookies making their first PPG CART World Series appearances at
Road America.
PJ Jones (Castrol-Jockey Reynard Toyota) and Hiro Matsushita (Panasonic Duskin
Reynard Toyota) hope to extend Toyota's record of success at Road America.
Richie Hearn (Ralphs-Food 4 Less Lola Ford) barely missed scoring with his
13th-place finish at Mid-Ohio, his best in seven races.
Qualifying for the Texaco/Havoline 200 will be broadcast 3 p.m. ET Saturday on
ESPN2. ESPN2's "On the Grid" program will air 3 p.m. ET Sunday, one-half hour
prior to ESPN's live race broadcast. The CART Radio Network, presented by PPG
and Toyota, will broadcast the Texaco/Havoline 200 live to more than 140 radio
stations across the country.
The PPG CART World Series continues with the Molson Indy Vancouver, Sunday,
Aug. 31, from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Road America Friday Qualifying
August 15, 1997
PAC-KING IT IN
By David Phillips
PacWest Motorsports teammates Mauricio Gugelmin and Mark Blundell monopolized
the front row of the provisional grid for Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road
America after today's round of qualifying. Gugelmin, who earned his first CART
pole earlier this season at the Rio 400 earlier this year, turned a best lap
of 1:42.379s lap to edge Blundell by .072s.
Their Reynard/Mercedes-Benz cars slowed by an assortment of electrical
problems in the morning practice session, the PacWest drivers turned to some
tried and true chassis setups from days gone-by for the qualifying session.
"Running 1-2 is a great start to the weekend for the PacWest team," said
Gugelmin, who qualified fifth fastest at Road America in 1996. "I had a good
battle with Mark for the top spot. We've had quite a good basic setup at the
this track for the last couple of years and fortunately it carried over."
Also working in the PacWest drivers' favor were the constantly changing
weather conditions in the morning session that hampered the other competitors
in their efforts to dial-in their cars.
"Conditions were tough for everyone," said Blundell. "One minute it was wet,
the next it was dry and then it was wet again. I actually think that worked in
our favor because while we were attending to our electrical problems the other
guys weren't able to make as much progress on the track as normal.
"In qualifying, I had a couple of problems on my last run and a puncture on
my first run, but overall it was a great day and I'm looking forward to
carrying on tomorrow."
PPG Cup points leader Alex Zanardi was third fastest in the Target/Ganassi
Reynard-Honda at 1:42.546s and, like the PacWest drivers, benefited from his
experience at Road America in 1996.
"It helped a lot that last year we had a good car," said Zanardi. "That was
what we started with today, more or less. I was supposed to test here in July
but I unintentionally interrupted the test after 12 laps when I crashed. So we
went back to last year's setup. The car is not perfect, but we will try to
improve it for tomorrow... just like the other guys."
Gugelmin, Blundell and Zanardi will be trying to improve their cars on one
of the favorite stops on the PPG CART World Series, a Road America circuit
that winds for four miles through Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine district,
featuring a classic challenge of slow, medium and high speed corners and three
180+ mph stretches.
"Road America is one of the nicest tracks we race on as far as the drivers
go," said Gugelmin. "It's four miles long, but when you look at the lap times
and see so many cars separated by one of two tenths of a second, it's amazing.
"You go through Turn One and think 'I did that better than before,' then
Turn Two and you think 'I did that well' by the time you get through the last
corner - Turn 13 - you expect to be a half second ahead. Then you see it's
only a tenth or so..."
Dario Franchitti turned-in yet another impressive performance in his first
visit to Road America, posting a lap at 1:42.689s in the Hogan
Reynard/Mercedes-Benz, while Michael Andretti, who scored his third victory at
Road America last year, was fifth fastest at 1:42.795s.
"The car is not quite as good as it was when we tested here," said Andretti,
the top Goodyear qualifier. "The track (conditions have) changed a lot as well
since we were here. Right now it's like a Firestone-fest at the moment.
Like Gugelmin, Andretti marveled at the closeness of the top lap times.
"It's truly amazing," he said. "Just unbelievable that on a track this size
the times are so close. Normally you can double the differential that exists
between two cars here, because it so long. If you have a car that's a tenth
better, then it should be at least two tenths better here, but it's not. Being
that close it's going to be tougher to pass."
Scott Pruett completed the runners in the sub-1:43 category with a 1:42.797
lap, while Gil de Ferran, Bryan Herta, Raul Boesel and Greg Moore rounded out
the top ten, Moore driving the spare Players/Forsythe Reynard/Mercedes-Benz
after the primary chassis was heavily damaged in the morning practice session.
Moore spun at Canada Corner and was subsequently T-boned by Max Papis who spun
backwards into the Canadian's car, extensively damaging the Arciero-Wells
Reynard-Toyota in the process.
Moore wasn't the only Canadian to come to grief at Canada Corner today.
Patrick Carpentier crashed heavily in qualifying, ironically after a failed
bid to pass Toronto-native Paul Tracy into the self-same Canada Corner. The
Alumax Reynard/Mercedes- Benz careened down the inside wall before spearing
into the tire barrier on the exit of the corner, doing heavy damage to the
right side of the car but, fortunately, injuring nothing but the driver's
pride.
Carpentier, who had been an encouraging 12th quickest in the morning
practice session, could only manage twentieth fastest in his spare car at
1:45.182s.
Practice resumes tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., with the final qualifying
session slated to get underway at 12:30 p.m.

Ę? sam čuo protiv Hill-a!
Ferrari superioran???
Ę? milimetar, Damon Hill - kralj Hungaroring-a!!!

treninga i kvalifikacije. Drugo, znam da je sleteo na warm-upu. I treće,
Jesi ti video Ferrarijeve gume?

petom krugu bilo 6 sekundi razlike? Stvarno ne znam sta da ti kazem
posle ovakve izjave.
1. krug; razlika izmedju Schumachera i Hilla iznosi tacno 1.718s.
kazem posle ovakve izjave...
nema o automobilizmu.
Koliko sam ja primetio, Schumacherov problem je bio nedostatak 'gripa';
Bas me zanima tvoj odgovor.

stazi nije bilo reklama :).
> Mnogo si bezobrazan i nemoj da izmišljaš nešto što nisi video. Lepo se
Prvo: nisam bezobrazan već si ti, a drugo: ne izmišljam ja, već ti. Pomenuo
si nekih 6 sekundi prednosti Šumahera pred Hill-om. Kad je to bilo? Na
Silverstonu, pre dve godine? ;>

Šta sam to izmislio?
Bas me zanima tvoj odgovor.
zaslepljeni jednom "skoro pobedom".
pretekne dok nije napravio par sitnijih grešaka u poslednjoj krivini pred
start-cilj ravninu.
auto-moto.258giovanni,
-> #250, vectorĘ? Vec sam ti dokazao da u petom krugu nije bilo nikakvih 6 sekundi
Ę? razlike, vec 0.6 sekundi, sto opet znaci da nisi ni gledao trku.
Zato si ti tu da me ispraviš u greškama. Ipak je razlika od 0,18 sekundi
ogromna.

ZANARDI IN THE CLINCH
By David Phillips
Alex Zanardi all but clinched the 1997 PPG CART World Series at Road America
with his third straight victory, and his fifth in the last six races. Zanardi
battled with Mark Blundell most of the race, taking the lead when he beat the
Motorola Reynard out of the pits on the second round of stops. Blundell kept
the pressure on Zanardi, but hopes of a third win for the PacWest driver
expired - along with his Mercedes-Benz - three laps from the finish, handing
second to teammate Mauricio Gugelmin while Gil de Ferran, now Zanardi's
closest competition in the PPG points race, finished third.
CART's annual visit to the majestic Road America circuit was plagued from
start to finish by inclement weather. Scattered rain showers slowed Friday's
practice session and washed-out Saturday's qualifying session, leaving
Gugelmin and Blundell on the front row in an impressive 1-2 performance by the
PacWest team during Friday's dry qualifying round. Zanardi was third, one
better than Dario Franchitti, who again impressed on his first visit to an
American circuit, while Michael Andretti, de Ferran, Scott Pruett, Bryan
Herta, Raul Boesel and Greg Moore rounded-out the top ten.
What had been a nuisance on Friday and Saturday became a major problem on
Sunday when heavy rains delayed the start for two hours before the race got
underway in single file order on a wet, but drying, track. Not unexpectedly,
Gugelmin, Blundell and Zanardi initially led from Franchitti and Andretti, but
chaos reined in midfield when Paul Tracy clipped a spinning Gualter Salles,
bounded into a tire wall and rolled over. Happily the Canadian escaped
unscathed, but his fading championship hopes were all but scuttled in the
incident.
Gugelmin quickly re-established his lead on the restart with Blundell
applying heavy pressure in second place. Likewise, Franchitti kept the heat on
Zanardi and duly took third when the Italian ran wide in Turn Thirteen on Lap
Five. Three laps later Blundell hustled past Gugelmin under braking for Turn
Five and on Lap Ten Franchitti drove under the Brazilian with contemptuous
ease in the Carousel to annex second.
Andretti was the first to make a move to slick tires on Lap 14 only to
deposit the Newman/Haas Swift in the gravel trap at Canada Corner. Ironically,
the resulting full course yellow proved the perfect opportunity for the rest
of the field to pit and take on slicks, then bring them up to temperature
while trundling behind the pace car.
However, one driver never gave himself the chance. That would be Franchitti
who came out of the pits on cold slicks behind Blundell and promptly slid into
the wall exiting Turn One.
It took several tries to get the race properly restarted, but when things
finally got underway on Lap 27, Gugelmin caught Zanardi napping and took
second place at Turn One, only to have the Target/Reynard steam past into Turn
Five.
"Mark really took off on the restart and I think it caught Alex by
surprise," said Gugelmin. "I passed him into Turn One but I didn't have the
speed to hold him behind me. The car went loose after seven or eight laps in
the wet and I had a lack of traction. I think the car was set-up a bit too
stiff."
So as the second round of stops loomed it was Blundell, Zanardi and Gugelmin
leading from de Ferran, Christian Fittipaldi (from 18th on the grid despite
malfunctioning boost control), Pruett, Bobby Rahal and Greg Moore.
Moore subsequently plowed the Players Reynard into the sand at Canada Corner
trying to outbrake Rahal, bringing-out the day's final full course yellow.
Everyone headed for the pits with the Target crew getting Zanardi out ahead of
Blundell.
"I have to give credit to my boys," said Zanardi. "They have been doing an
incredible job all year long. Many, many times I have come in behind somebody
and I got ahead of the guy in the pits, sometimes with a big advantage."
Although fifteen laps remained, the outcome of the race had been decided.
Blundell kept Zanardi honest, staying within a second of the Reynard-Honda
until four laps from home when the Mercedes began to lose power. Blundell
dropped a full second to Zanardi on Lap 48, then lost power altogether on the
run to Canada Corner the following lap.
Gugelmin was thus promoted to second while de Ferran had just enough fuel to
hold-off the courageous Fittipaldi for third place and so move into a distant
second in the race for the PPG Cup, one which Zanardi could easily secure in a
fortnight in Vancouver.
ANDRETTI GOES LONG TERM
Texaco and Newman/Haas Racing are soon expected to announce that they have
signed Michael Andretti to a five year contract for the PPG CART World Series.
Teammate Christian Fittipaldi will likely be sponsored by Kmart in 1998 with
associate sponsorship from Texaco replacing Budweiser which is rumored to be
headed to Della Penna Racing.
DELLA PENNA ON THE MOVE
Della Penna Racing is thought to be in the drivers seat when it comes to the
Budweiser beer sponsorship in the 1998 PPG CART World Series. The new team has
had a difficult time of it in 1997, thanks to their ill-fated decision to buy
Lola T97/00 chassis, a decision that has doomed driver Richie Hearn to also-
ran status this year. It is also believed that team owner John Della Penna is
pursuing a deal with Honda engines for 1998.
TEAM GREEN STILL UNDECIDED
Team Green looms as a keystone of the potential driver changes for the 1998
PPG CART World Series line-up. Current driver Parker Johnstone has suffered a
monumentally disappointing season and is likely to be cut loose if the team
remains a one car, KOOL-backed effort. However, team owner Barry Green is
hopeful of fielding a two car team in 1998, either a two car KOOL effort or
with backing for a second car from another sponsor.
Robby Gordon, who left Green in the lurch last year with his 11th hour
decision to join the SABCO Winston Cup team, has been talking very confidently
about his chances to driving for the team in '98. Green, however, says he has
no deal with Gordon.
"Our driver at present is Parker Johnstone," said Green. "I'd like to run a
two car team in 1998, and I've talked with Robby Gordon, but there is nothing
signed. I've got a meeting with Robby this week, but we will not be signing
anything this week either."
VALVOLINE TEAM USA ANNOUNCED
U.S. National Formula Ford 2000 Championship frontrunners Buddy Rice and Matt
Sielsky have been selected as the eight winners of the annual Valvoline Team
USA Scholarship. Rice and Sielsky will fly the Team USA colors at EFDA Formula
Opel European Nations Cup VIII event at Donnington Park, England on October
18/19, 1999.
Rice and Sielsky will drive a pair of cars entered by John Village
Automotive in an effort to improve upon the Silver Medal finish earned last
year by Valvoline Team USA drivers Jerry Nadeau and Tony Renna. Previous
winners of the scholarship include 1996 PPG Cup winner Jimmy Vasser and Bryan
Herta, 1993 PPG Firestone Indy Lights Champion and current teammate to Bobby
Rahal on the Team Rahal CART team.

Zanardi's PPG Cup Roll Now Includes A Texaco/Havoline 200 Win
CART Online (August 17) -- Alex Zanardi's stunning run through the second
half of the PPG CART World Series season continued Sunday when he drove to
victory in the Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America.
Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) earned his fourth victory in the past five
events to cement his hold on first place in the PPG Cup championship with his
series-leading fifth victory of the season. With a 38-point bulge (168-130)
over Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda), Zanardi becomes
the favorite for the $1 million bonus to be collected by the PPG Cup champion
at the conclusion of the campaign.
Zanardi's 6.148-second victory over Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest
Mercedes) allowed him to become the first PPG CART World Series driver since
Al Unser Jr. in 1994 to post four wins (Long Beach, Indianapolis, Milwaukee,
Portland) in five starts.
Zanardi also became the second PPG CART World Series driver to win three
consecutive events this season, following victories at Michigan and Mid-Ohio.
He joins Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes), who won earlier at Nazareth,
Rio de Janeiro and St. Louis. He will look to tie the CART record of four
consecutive wins set by Unser Jr. in 1990 when the PPG CART World Series heads
to the Molson Indy Vancouver on Aug. 31.
"We know that the [PPG Cup] situation after Mid-Ohio last week was fantastic
and now it's even better," said Zanardi, who has scored 99 of a possible 110
points in his past five races. "I hope we can celebrate very soon."
Zanardi has made a habit of wheel-spinning "doughnuts" at the conclusion of
his recent victories. Those doughnuts were especially enthusiastic as dusk
settled on the rain-drenched crowd of more than 50,000 at the 4.048-mile
permanent road course Sunday evening.
"The fans sat so long in the stands and got so much water, and got so cold and
were so loyal, that I just had to do something for them," Zanardi said.
Gugelmin's runner-up effort capped a strong weekend which featured his second
career pole position - his other came in his homeland of Rio de Janeiro
earlier this season - and his best finish since taking second at Long Beach.
He said he was hampered by the wet conditions, which delayed the scheduled
race start by 2 hours, 15 minutes.
"I went flat out all the way," said Gugelmin, who collected his fifth
top-seven performance in the last six events. "Basically, I just didn't have
enough for Alex and Mark [Blundell] today. The car went very loose after seven
or eight laps in the wet, and I had a lack of traction. It was hard to put
heat into the tires and the car was set up a bit too stiff for the conditions."
De Ferran captured third place for his fifth podium performance in the last
seven events and sixth in the last nine. The performance also moved him from
third to second in the PPG Cup championship.
"In the beginning of the race, I couldn't quite follow Alex's pace," de Ferran
said. "I was being very careful with our tires. My pace was conservative to
save the tires. Once we got the slicks on, believe me, I was pushing as hard
as I could. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. We haven't won this year, but
being second in the championship helps. This is such a competitive series this
year that you just have to have everything right in your package. We have been
in a winning position twice this year -- at Long Beach and Homestead -- but
not quite today. There will come a time when we have the best package. Our day
will come."
After the track received a thorough soaking during the delay, CART Chief
Steward Wally Dallenbach mandated a "wet start," which meant that all drivers
had to start on rain tires. Gugelmin led the first eight laps from the pole
before Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes), his PacWest teammate, took his
first of two leads on Lap 9.
It was during that stretch that Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift
Ford) became the first driver to take on slick tires, on Lap 13. On the
ensuing lap, however, Andretti spun off course at Turn 12, bringing an early
end to his afternoon.
Bryan Herta, who led 18 laps from the pole at Mid-Ohio a week earlier, took
his second lead in as many races during a round of pit stops under caution on
Lap 16. But Herta gave the advantage back to Blundell when he pitted for
slicks on Lap 19. Blundell held that edge until Zanardi just slipped by him in
a duel on pit stops during a caution on Lap 36. Zanardi never relinquished the
lead thereafter, leading the final 15 laps.
Blundell ultimately retired due to a small fire in the rear of his car while
running second, just three laps from the checkered flag.
"I'm bitterly disappointed for myself and the team," he said. "We ran a great
race. The balance of the car was great. Our decision to change tires and our
strategy were good. I felt we probably had something left for Alex, but due to
a technical problem we didn't finish the race."
Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart/Budweiser Swift Ford) finished fourth, matching a
season best previously accomplished at Portland. Scott Pruett (Brahma Reynard
Ford) finished fifth, his fourth points-paying effort in the past five starts.
Tracy, who entered the weekend second to Zanardi in the points race, exited
when unable to avoid contact with Gualter Salles (INDUSVAL Reynard Ford) on
the opening lap and fell to third in the championship with 121 points.
The Texaco/Havoline 200 will receive an encore performance at 1 p.m. ET Monday
on ESPN. It will re-air at midnight ET Tuesday and 4 p.m. ET Wednesday on
ESPN2.
The PPG CART World Series continues Aug. 31 with the Molson Indy Vancouver
from Concord Pacific Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Mika and David Re-Sign for West McLaren Mercedes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
West McLaren Mercedes are pleased that the team's driver line-up for 1998
will continue to be David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen.
The team has sought to objectively analyse all driver options and placed
commitment to winning as the principle criteria for the selection process. The
speed and pace of Mika and David is apparent to any observer, and the team is
convinced that both of these young and exciting drivers have developed the
focus and commitment necessary to support a World Championship campaign.
Ron Dennis announced the 1998 driver line-up at Spa with the following
statement: "Both drivers have contributed to the building and re-shaping of
our team and I believe that they should and will benefit from the fruits of
these efforts next year."
Norbert Haug commented: "The Mercedes-Benz management has taken the decision
together with Ron Dennis with the intention to ensure continuity. With David
Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen we have continuously improved our performance
since the beginning of the 1996 season, though the desired wins have not yet
come which in most cases was not the fault of our drivers. We think that all
the prerequisites are present for further improvement to the team's
competitiveness so that David and Mika will achieve their well deserved Grand
Prix wins soon."
David Coulthard said: "I am delighted to be extending my contract with West
McLaren Mercedes, and I am looking forward to continuing the healthy and
productive competition with Mika."
Mika explained that: "West McLaren Mercedes is in the most exciting phase of
my time with the team. The confident expectations for next year are shared by
everyone involved."
Dieter Weng the Marketing Director of West stated that, "The image and
approach of David and Mika have complemented our style and marketing
objectives. We obviously look forward to some interesting and exciting times
with them in 1998."
Whilst all elements appear to be in position to produce a successful year in
1998, all parties agree that the team will show its race winning potential in
the remaining events of 1997.
F1: Belgian Grand Prix Report
Just 20 minutes before the start of the race it started to rain. And rain
it did, with much of the track awash with water, the worst place being at
the bus stop chicane where huge lakes had gathered. Ralf Schumacher went
off the circuit on his way to the grid and had to run back for the spare,
whilst Damon Hill was gambling on it drying and setting up the car for dry
conditions. With 2 wet compounds and 3 tread patterns available the race
looked set to be governed even more so than usual by tyres. With the track
sodden it was decided that the race would be started behind the safety car
so that the drivers could get used to the new conditions. This was a very
sensible decision.
For 3 laps the cars circulated behind Oliver Gavin in the safety car, and
the truly treacherous conditions could be seen. The highlight of these
laps? Fastest lap Ukyo Katayama who set a 3m13s lap on lap 2. The safety
car peeled into the pits at the end of lap 3, and the race began, with
Schumacher having a good go at Alesi. By the end of lap 4 Villeneuve had
1.5 seconds over Alesi, only to see Alesi taken by Schumacher shortly
after. Schumacher was not standing still, and soon had Villeneuve in his
sights as well, and proceeded to take both of them within one lap. His
brother was not so fortunate, taking another journey across the Ardenne
countryside. Schumacher (on Intermediates, against the others wets) was
pulling away, and by the end of lap 5 had a 5.8 second lead over
Villeneuve, with Alesi, Fisichella, Hakkinen and Frentzen behind. The
battle of the race was the one for 3rd between Alesi and Fisichella, with
Fisichella taking Alesi, and then up to 2nd when Villeneuve made a very
early pit stop for intermediate tyres. Schumacher on these tyres was
pulling away at 10s a lap....
Further down the field Nakano was already out, whilst the battle for 5th
was governed by the very tardy Williams of Frentzen (on the wrong set up)
who held up the queue of Diniz, Hill and Herbert. The surprise of the race
at this stage was Alesi pitting for slicks at the end of lap 7. Diniz and
Herbert made short work of Frentzen, whilst Hill also got by almost forcing
the German off the track in the process. The Stewarts followed through as
well. This was not going to be Williams' weekend. Berger was the next of
the front runners to pit for slicks, and set about the track, making a list
of the two Benettons, Irvine and Frentzen on slicks. Fisichella soon joined
them, whilst Hill made the odd move of Intermediates, almost colliding with
Fisichella who was exiting the pits - the Jordan team failing to keep their
driver in till it was clear to exit. Herbert and Diniz made very short work
of Coulthard (whose tyres were well and truly shot), taking Herbert to 4th,
Diniz 5th and Hill now 6th. Coulthard was now in for slicks also. His team
mate was also having problems and going off the track. Hakkinen was also
soon in for slicks.
A huge slew of pit stops ensued over the following laps making it nigh on
impossible to keep a good track of what was happening on the track. This
was one confusing race in the early stages. Schumacher became the only
runner to run his expected pit strategy, pitting on lap 14 for his first
stop (many of the others were already on their second stops) and onto
slicks. His 67 second lead only dropped to 60 seconds over Alesi after pit
stops. The German was simply in a class of his own. The order at the end of
lap 14 was Schumacher, Alesi, Fisichella, Hakkinen, Herbert, Coulthard,
Frentzen, Berger, Verstappen, Villeneuve, Hill, Diniz, Salo, Irvine,
Morbidelli, Magnussen, Marques and Katayama. Things at the front were
getting a little closer - the gap from Schuey to Alesi was now only 41
seconds..... Hill had to make another stop to get rid of his intermediates,
and so went out onto the track with slicks, just as it started to rain
again on some parts of the circuit. So with 19 laps gone the order was now
Schumacher, Alesi, Fisichella, Hakkinen, Herbert, Frentzen, Coulthard,
Berger, Verstappen, Villeneuve, Diniz, Hill, Salo, Morbidelli, Magnussen,
Ralf, Marques, and Katayama. Marques was then the next to retire.
The Williams started to get better as the track dried, with Frentzen having
a very good go at Herbert in the Sauber. Herbert was able to brake a lot
later than Frentzen, and so kept him at bay for quite some time. Frentzen
had a daring go at the entrance to the bus stop, but gave up at the last
possible second, Frentzen finally managaing to get through at the start of
the next lap. Frentzen was now up to 5th, with Hakkinen ahead. Schumacher
was an untroubled 38 seconds ahead of Alesi at the end of lap 21, and
further still the next lap when Alesi pitted for more slicks. The drivers
seemingly at random pitted and so the leaderboard made very difficult
readings of who was really where - other than that Schumacher was in a race
of his own.
Ferrari were now preparing for their second (and scheduled) stop, being
turned around in 7.3 seconds. The sun was now breaking out wonderfully on
some parts of the circuit, on other parts it started to rain again (though
not enough to send everyone pitwards). From laps 31-33 most of the front
runners pitted, and by the end of lap 33 Schumacher had 43 seconds over
Fisichella, who in turn had 7 seconds over Hakkinenn, Frentzen, Herbert and
Alesi. Villeneuve was not a contender today. After a few laps Villeneuve
won (and lucked) himself up to 7th place, and then found himself battling
Alesi for 6th place, finally managing at Le Combe. Alesi just gave in.
And so the race continued, and finished with a bit of excitement when
Irvine and Diniz collided on the last lap, and Hill pitted at the end of
the penultimate lap with a wheel that felt loose. Schumacher showed what
makes him worth the money Ferrari pay him today.
Odlična trka.
Šumaher je zavladao, napravivši u samo 4 kruga 30 sekundi razlike između sebe
i Alezija. Vilnev je nešto petljao sa pneumaticima, pa je u prvih 10 krugova
2x išao u box (?). Nikako mi nije jasno kako je Alezi koji je pravio odlične
krugove pri sredini staze (negde oko 30 kruga) na kraju bio onako loše
plasiran. Čak i sa boxom viška, imao je ogromnu prednost nad ostalima, a
dopustio je i da ga Vilnev obiđe na stazi.
Mladi Fizikela je stvarno odlično odvozao, a izdvojio bih još i Herberta koji
se maestralno držao pred Kultardom, čak je i pokušao da ga obiđe par puta, što
ipak nije bilo potrebno (Kultard je sam sebi dovoljan :). Hill je uspeo da uđe
u box u poslednjem krugu ;), verovatno mu je motor otkazao.
PS. Što se mesta gledanja tiče, moram da pohvalim Sport Caffe - veoma prijatno
mesto, sa lepim enterijerom ;) i nekih 20-ak televizora na kojima se vrtio
prenos formule. Čak je i jedna riba iz Modelsa došla da gleda formulu O:)
Razlog što je Šumaher toliko bolje vozio je taj što je on vozio rezervni
bolid, skroz podešen za trku po kiši. Svi ostali su menjali svoje "suve"
setup-ove i nisu, normalno, mogli da za 30 min podese najbolje svoje bolide.
To još jednom dokazuje koliko Šumaher bolje taktizira od ostalih vozača.
Naravno, uz intermediate gume, sigurna pobeda. Svaka čast!
Što se tiče Vilneva, to je vezista bez premca. Vidi se da dečko nikad
nije vozio po kiši, pa je njegova "uboga" taktika upropastila njegovu
šansu da pobedi :). Dobro je te je uzeo i ovaj jedan poen...
Bi mi žao Alezija, zbog onih ulazaka u box. I on je imao sličnu taktiku
sa gumama kao i Šumaher, ali se izgleda izradio sa gorivom (kao što se
uvek izradi).
Mercedes-Benz Report: All Engines Are Created Equal
CART Online (August 23) -- All Mercedes-Benz race engines are created equal,
and none is more equal than any other.
In all but one of the seven instances when the three-pointed star visited a
CART PPG World Series victory lane this season, and each of the five times
that a Mercedes-powered car qualified on the pole, a different IC108D engine
provided the power.
"Sixty-five Mercedes-Benz Indy car engines have been produced this season,"
said Paul Ray, vice president of Ilmor Engineering, the race engine-building
arm of Mercedes-Benz. "And some of those engines have been re-built as many as
seven or eight times by this point in the year. But all of the parts are
manufactured -- and each of the engines built and re-built -- to very precise
specifications and very stringent quality control measures. That's why we
know, whenever a Mercedes-Benz is bolted into a race car, it's a potential
winner."
The 4000-plus parts that make up each Mercedes-Benz IC108D engine are
manufactured by Ilmor at its state-of-the-art facility in Brixworth, England
-- about an hour's drive north of London -- and by a select group of suppliers
from around the world. These parts are then shipped in kit form to the two
shops which assemble Mercedes-Benz Indy car engines: VDS Racing in Midland,
Texas, and Penske Racing in Reading, Pa.
Despite the thousands of miles that separate each of these locations and the
fact that different personnel assemble and re-build engines for each of the
Mercedes-powered teams, remarkable consistency and performance parity is
maintained from engine to engine and re-build to re-build.
The One Percent Rule requires that each Mercedes engine, when it is tested on
the dynamometer after assembly, produce performance numbers that vary by no
more than one percent from every other IC108D engine.
"Large performance variations are unacceptable," explained Ray. "Each of our
teams is a partner and, as such, has a right to expect the same level of
performance that all of our other partners have. If an engine fails to supply
the appropriate power when it's tested -- which does occasionally happen --
then we know something is wrong. We tear it apart, find the problem and build
it up again. It is the sophistication of the machinery and skill of the staff
in Brixworth, as well as the dedication and care of the engine builders here
in the States, that allow us to maintain such exceptionally high standards and
give our partners the assurances of parity they need."
With seven wins and five pole positions, Mercedes-powered cars have finished
second or better in 16 of the last 17 races. Consistency among hardware is
only one of the reasons Mercedes-Benz has led the CART manufacturer's
championship since May. The depth of each race team combined with exceptional
driving talent on the seven-man squad is another.
With 14 (of 17) races of the PPG CART World Series season complete, three
Mercedes-Benz drivers have won multiple races (Paul Tracy, Marlboro Team
Penske, 3 wins; Greg Moore, Player's Forsythe Racing, 2 wins; Mark Blundell,
PacWest Racing, 2 wins), six of the seven have posted top-three finishes
(Mauricio Gugelmin, PacWest Racing; Al Unser Jr., Marlboro Team Penske;
Patrick Carpentier, Team Alumax/Bettenhausen; Tracy; Moore and Blundell), and
three have qualified on pole (Tracy, Gugelmin and Dario Franchitti, Hogan
Racing). The Mercedes six-race win streak in mid-season is also the longest
engine victory string in the ultra-competitive CART series since 1991.
Whether they be racing drivers, engine builders or any other member of the
team, the strength of the Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Team, like any democracy,
lies with its people. Great people have been building, racing and winning with
Mercedes-Benz engines around the globe since the first auto race was held in
1894.
In all but one of Mercedes-Benz's seven PPG Cup victories this season, a
different IC108D engine powered the winning car, and in each of the five
instances that a Mercedes-powered car qualified on the pole, a different
engine provided the motivation.
Vasser Ready To Race And Rock & Roll In Vancouver
CART Online (August 24) -- Jimmy Vasser, driver of the No. 1 Reynard Honda
HRR for the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing team, will practice and qualify for the
Molson Indy Vancouver race on Friday, August 29. After he completes his work
at the racetrack, Vasser will have a chance to see how a new work project of
his is developing.
During the past year, Vasser started his own record label, V12 Records. The
first band signed to the label, Groovebender, will be performing Friday
(August 29) evening in Vancouver at 'The Gate,' a local music club.
Groovebender, a five-piece original band from Tacoma, Washington, has been
together for just over a year. The self-titled debut CD release from V12
Records features nine songs from Groovebender. Five experienced musicians from
Tacoma and Seattle, including Jimmy's brother Pat, make up the band.
"Obviously, racing is my career, but music is an interest of mine," said Jimmy
Vasser. "At the track, I'm always listening to music -- except when I'm in the
race car. Forming V12 Records let me help Pat and the band, but it's also
giving me a chance to pursue my interests. Right now, the band is helping me
learn about the music business. That way, I can decide if I want to pursue my
interests, expand the label and sign other bands."
Vasser, the 1996 PPG Cup champion, won four races and four pole positions en
route to last year's title. This season, Vasser is eighth in the PPG Cup
championship standings after finishing eighth one race ago at the
Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America.
"Jimmy has been great in helping the band put out the CD," Pat Vasser said.
"We thought performing for him and his fellow CART drivers and teams at
Vancouver would be a chance for us to thank him for his help. We have played a
few times around the Tacoma-area, but this will be our first major show in
conjunction with the release of the CD."
The Gate is located at 1176 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, next to
the Hotel California. Groovebender will take the stage at 11:00 PM. Maxidadd,
a local Vancouver band will follow Groovebender on stage.
F1: Belgian GP winners' press conference
Q. Congratulations, Michael, on your fourth official
victory at Spa. What were your thoughts today?
MS: I was standing on the podium and I just emptied my
mind, celebrating that moment, because after the
practice and qualifying sessions I hadn't been too
satisfied and I certainly hadn't been optimistic about
the race. In straightforward dry circumstances we would
have been struggling. But obviously with the weather -
and also making the right choice of tyres - everything
went perfectly. I am really delighted for everyone, not
just for me, but for the team and the sponsors, too. We
have a great combination on our team.
Q. You must be pleased that this makes four wins, which
was the target set by Ferrari at the press conference
in January ...
MS: Not for me! It may have been a target for some other
people, yes, and obviously we have fulfilled it. But I
hope I have not finished yet. There are still five
races to go and I hope I have some more victories to
enjoy. But this was certainly a very nice one.
Q. You had some thrilling moments in the first few laps,
first when you passed Jean Alesi and then when you took
Jacques Villeneuve. Tell us how you tackled them.
MS: With Jean it was fairly tight, but I had decided myself
that was the point [on the circuit] to pass him and I
had decided to take the line. If he hadn't moved over
then I would have touched him. On the other hand, it
was still very slippery and it probably wouldn't have
damaged anything if I had just leaned against him. But
he saw the situation and then he moved over because
there was no other choice for him. Jacques was quite
fair: he stayed on his line without zig-zagging or
trying to resist. He must have known that with his
full-wet tyres he didn't have a chance [of resisting],
so he just stayed where he was - and it was fairly
easy.
Q. What tyres had you - and they - chosen?
MS: I was on intermediates and they were on full wets.
Q. So even in those flooded conditions you think that
intermediates were the right choice?
MS: Obviously, yes! I guess most people were running on
intermediates, but it was certainly a very difficult
decision because none of us knew how long it would rain
as hard as it was raining during my last installation
lap before I went to the grid. The full-wet tyres
looked like the best choice at that moment, but as it
had stopped raining by then, I decided to gamble that
it was just a shower, the rain would stop and I could
take a chance. It was obviously the right decision and
fortunately Race Control decided that it was too
dangerous to start the race in those circumstances.
Q. Once you started to get away in front you must have
been laughing in your helmet!
MS: I was fairly busy and I didn't have time to laugh in my
helmet. But I have to say that when it stopped raining
while I was sitting on the grid and I saw the sun
coming out I started to smile. My first thought was,
'great, these are just the right circumstances for me
now.' But from that moment to the chequered flag was
quite a long time ...
Q. How did you have the car set up for the wet?
MS: It was the usual procedure of changing the wings. In
the wet you need a bit more downforce in order to
survive, and that's what we did. I don't want to say
too much because these guys beside me are listening.
But it was the right circumstances for me and the car.
Everything fitted together, including choosing the
right tyres, and obviously I like this circuit. As far
as I am concerned, nothing compares with this place.
Q. Giancarlo, how did you have your car set up?
GF: I made the right choice of tyres for the start - the
same as Michael in fact - and this meant that I was
able to overtake Jacques and then get away on my own.
Q. Were you worried about the speed at which Michael was
getting away from you?
GF: Michael was very fast and I couldn't actually see how
fast he was getting away from me. But I was able to
keep up to some extent and I have to thank the team for
their support. The car was running well and it stayed
fairly consistent. The pit stop went well, too: I came
in at exactly the right time and we restarted with
heavy fuel, so I was able to do the rest of the race
with only one more pit stop after that first change of
tyres.
Q. Mika, during the pace lap we saw you off the road, and
Frentzen then changed places with you. What happened?
MH: I actually went off at the top of the hill ... just
because there was so much water on the track. I
couldn't steer the car anymore and went on the grass
and lost two places. But I also had a technical problem
with the car, for the last 15 laps, so it was very
difficult to keep the car 100 per cent in the corners:
I was losing time on every lap. It was difficult to
push to the maximum. On every lap I was losing roughly
two or three tenths because of that.
Q. Michael, how do you feel about the championship now?
MS: It couldn't have gone better. Maybe it's paying me back
for the bad luck we had at Silverstone and Hungary. But
nothing is decided yet. Twelve points is a nice margin,
but with five races to go it's still not a definite
situation. Things are improving for us and now I hope
that Monza will be as good as it was last year. Even
so, it is going to be very difficult because from what
I saw in the test last week the two guys next to me are
going to be very fast. It's going to be a struggle, but
on the other side I'd rather have them in front of me
than Villeneuve.
Pole sitter, Dane Tom Kristensen had a wild crash in second lap at
"Blanchimont", the fastest curve at Spa. His Lola suddenly broke out
and was catapulted into the guardrails several times left and right.
Argentine Emiliano Spataro while trying to avoid hitting the wreck,
pushed Biagi's car into a collision with Davis Cook's Lola who got
airborne and hit Biagi's helmet with a wheel. Both drivers sustained
unhurt. Tom Kristensen broke down after climbing out of his wreck.
Doctors later diagnosed several hard bruises only.
The race was red flagged and the restart was stopped again because of
F1: Silly Season Status - August 28th, 1997
Williams: All parties confirmed: Mecachrome, Jacques Villeneuve, and
Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Williams has made no formal announcement on Frentzen,
but he confirmed at Hungary that he will finish out his two-year contract
with Williams. Jean-Christophe Boullion will remain as test driver.
McLaren: All parties confirmed: Mercedes, Mika Hakkinen, and David
Coulthard. Nick Heidfeld will also continue his testing duties next season,
and may move up to F3000 next year from German Formula 3.
Ferrari: All parties confirmed: Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine, along
with Nicola Larini back as tester.
Benetton: Still under agreement with Mecachrome, and yet to finalize the
money part of it. Alexander Wurz also has a tentative agreement with
Benetton to drive, and a deal could be announced at any time. Giancarlo
Fisichella is very likely to go to Benetton, as it does not seem that Eddie
Jordan has a solid claim on him. If not, expect Jarno Trulli to be promoted.
Jordan: Confirmed are Mugen-Honda, who will be building an entirely new
engine next year, and Ralf Schumacher. As noted, Fisichella is not likely to
return, and Jordan has confirmed they have no interest in Damon Hill. Jean
Alesi has now made it clear that he is willing to take a significant paycut
in order secure a competitive drive for next year, so he seems the likeliest
candidate now for the job.
Prost: Peugeot will support the team and Olivier Panis, with the second
driver now said by Alain Prost to be either Jarno Trulli or Damon Hill. The
offer to Hill, as stands, is rumored to be in the area of $4 million dollars,
with most of that money coming from Peugeot. However, Hill's agents are
biting, and there appears to be less and less interest on Prost's side.
Sauber: Johnny Herbert will return along with the Petronas-backed
powerplants. The second seat has been turned away from Damon Hill when he
asked for a bit too much money, but now it appears that he may be willing to
talk lower numbers. It was recently rumored that Petronas was backing a $20
million deal over two years for Hill, but that has been denied and even
laughed at by involved parties. Ferrari still have an interest in their
team, and are still insisting they keep Gianni Morbidelli -- but Petronas may
well buy them off.
Arrows: TWR has confirmed they are looking for sources to develop their own
engine next year. Among people they've talked to are both Brian Hart, and
Yamaha. It is thought that one of those two will likely sell off their
engines to TWR. On the driver side, Jorg Muller will be partnered by Pedro
Diniz if Damon Hill does infact decide to leave.
Tyrrell: They will use Ford-Cosworth V10s, and will likely return Jos
Verstappen to the lineup. The second driver may very well not be Mika Salo,
and could be Formula Nippon star Toranosuke Takagi.
Minardi: An engine has yet to be negotiated, and could be either Yamaha or
Hart again -- whichever one does not committ to Arrows. Tarso Marques will
fill one seat next year, and the second is up for grabs. Ukyo Katayama,
Pedro Diniz, or test driver Esteban Tuero will likely fill the seat. Tuero
has been promised that he will drive at Jerez this year for Minardi, to get
some F1 experience.
Stewart: Ford and Barrichello will be back, and it is now expected that Jan
Magnussen will return as well. CART rookie Dario Franchitti still remains
Ubedljivo najbolja trka ove sezone. Alex Zanardi je startovao sa pol
pozicije ispred Rahala i Vassera. Za nekih 15tak krugova napravio je oko
3,5 sekunde prednosti u odnosu na Rahala, a onda uprskao stvar kasno
zakocivsi u jednoj krivini. Na stazu se vratio kao poslednji. Sta reci?
Uspeo je da se dokopa treceg mesta (!), a onda je, posle _vrlo sporog_
pitstopa, napravio identicnu gresku u istoj krivini - vratio se na 10.
mesto (jel` bese 10.?), da bi zatim prokrcio svoj put do cetvrtog (!)
mesta (izbacivsi Hertu iz trke, doduse;).
Jimmy Vasser je vodio dobar deo trke, medjutim, zbog sporog pitstopa
morao je da 'preda vodjstvo' ;) Gugelminu, koji je na kraju i pobedio.
Gil de Ferran je zavrsio treci. Da ima pravde, Zanardi bi juce pobedio. ;)
Naravno, zvezda trke nije bio Gugelmin, vec Zanardi. O;) Steta sto nije
pobedio i osvojio titulu... ;)
PPG Cup News - Molson Indy -- Zanardi Fined $25,000 For Rough Driving!
CART Online (August 31) -- CART Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach has levied a
$25,000 fine against Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda HRR) and placed him on
probation for the remainder of the 1997 PPG CART World Series season for rough
driving in Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver.
The penalties were brought against Zanardi for his late-race incident with
Bryan Herta that resulted in contact that sent Herta into the tire barrier
while Zanardi continued on. Dallenbach reviewed the tape of the incident
following the race and found Zanardi in violation of sections 6.1 and 8.13 of
the 1997 CART Official Rule Book. Section 6.1 refers to general terms in
regard to conduct at CART events and 8.13 refers to unjustifiable risk, which
are not subject to protest.
"It was a great race and this kind of race can provoke some of this action,
but as far as the Stewards were concerned it was unnecessarily rough action
that will not be tolerated," Dallenbach said. "It was unfortunate that he took
out the race leader, but we would have taken the same type action if this
occurred with anybody in the field."
Zanardi will be on probation for next weekend's Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey
and the season-ending Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota on Sept. 28. The terms
and conditions of the probation and the consequences imposed if the conditions
of the probation are violated are at the discretion of the Stewards.
A FITTING FAREWELL
By David Phillips
Championship Auto Racing Teams bid adieu to Vancouver's Concord Pacific
Place street circuit in fitting style, with a slam, bang race featuring many
an act of overly aggressive driving and at least one act of belated
officiating. But an otherwise ugly day was saved by the fact that one of
CART's classiest drivers - and finest human beings - scored a long overdue
first victory in PPG Cup competition.
That would be Mauricio Gugelmin, who took the lead on the final pit stop
exchange and cruised home ahead of a hamstrung Jimmy Vasser, Gil de Ferran and
Alex Zanardi to score PacWest Racing's third victory of the season. By
finishing ahead of Zanardi, de Ferran narrowed the Italian's PPG Cup lead to
37 points and kept the championship race alive for another week.
Early-on it looked like Zanardi might clinch the title at Vancouver. The
Italian bolted to an early lead from evergreen Bobby Rahal and Vasser with
Gugelmin triggering past Michael Andretti on the hair-raising run to the Turn
Three hairpin.
"I just timed it perfectly exiting the last turn onto the pit straight," said
Gugelmin. "I got into Turn One faster than Michael and went around him in Turn
Two. That was a relief; I knew Michael was going to be a tough customer."
Although Zanardi edged out to a useful advantage over the tire-conserving
Rahal, all was not well with the lead Reynard/Honda. Zanardi arrived at Turn
Three on Lap 16 fresh out of brakes, took to the escape road, stalled and
dropped to 23rd before rejoining the field.
"I don't know why, but we had a problem with the brakes," said Zanardi.
"Sometimes the pedal would just go down completely and I would have to pump
it."
Under increasing pressure from Vasser, Rahal yielded the lead on Lap 26 and
was soon demoted to fourth by Gugelmin and Andretti. Lap 31 saw Rahal pit for
new rubber only to retire with a massive engine failure on Lap 34.
The first round of pit stops came and went with Vasser continuing to lead from
Gugelmin and Andretti with de Ferran a circumspect fourth ahead of Greg Moore
and the charging Zanardi, who was regularly lapping 1/2 a second quicker than
the leaders.
But then again, all was not well with Vasser. First he flat spotted his tires
in an ill-fated bid to lap Al Unser, Jr. Then he clipped a wall exiting the
Turn Five chicane and, later, a small fire at the back of the Target/Ganassi
Reynard did a power of no good to his right rear damper and gear linkage.
"My car was great when I was behind Bobby," said Vasser, "but then I flat
spotted the tires, clipped the wall and started having trouble with the
gearbox and I just couldn't attack."
Nevertheless Vasser maintained his advantage over Gugelmin until the
Brazilian beat him out of the pits on the final round of scheduled stops. At
that stage, however, Bryan Herta was actually leading the race, having made an
early pit stop for fresh rubber and subsequently running out of sequence with
the lead pack consisting of Gugelmin, Vasser and Zanardi, the latter having
bulled his way past Moore, de Ferran and Andretti.
Moore and Andretti took themselves out of the reckoning by tangling with
Vancouver's unyielding walls, then Zanardi sailed down the escape road in Turn
Three again, stalled (again) and resumed his charge, albeit a lap down.
Although he was slated for a splash of fuel ten laps from the finish, Herta
was well ensconced in the lead when Zanardi's charge carried him into the side
of the Shell Reynard on Lap 86, with Herta plunging into the tire wall and
Zanardi continuing on his merry way.
That left Gugelmin leading from the hobbled Vasser with de Ferran in third,
suffering braking problems of his own. Having managed to fend-off Vasser's
early attempts to lap him, Unser had worked his way up to fourth ahead of Raul
Boesel, Dario Franchitti, Christian Fittipaldi, Mark Blundell and the unfazed
Zanardi.
Gugelmin subsequently rattled off the final ten laps to take an immensely
popular first win in CART competition, while Vasser matched his best finish of
the season with a second place ahead of de Ferran.
Fourth? That would be Zanardi, who barged his way past Blundell, Fittipaldi,
Franchitti, Boesel and finally Unser in the final laps to earn a dozen PPG
points on the day to compliment the $25,000 fine and two race probation later
assessed him by CART chief steward Wally Dallenbach.
As for the rest, Unser earned some much needed points with a heads-up drive
to fifth while Franchitti threw another bunch of points away by slamming a
wall five laps shy of the finish, while Fittipaldi clobbered Boesel under
braking for the final corner of the race. Boesel limped across the line in
sixth ahead of Blundell while Herta recovered from his latest run-in with
Zanardi to take eighth.
GUGELMIN'S BREAKTHROUGH WIN
It took 67 tries and more than a few heartbreaks, but Mauricio Gugelmin
finally scored his first win in CART competition at the Vancouver Molson Indy.
The man who has come so close to victory on any number of occasions, who has
been the foundation of PacWest Racing only to see teammate Mark Blundell win
twice this year, and who had four second places to his credit since first
coming to CART in 1993, was only too happy to shed the bridesmaid mantle.
"I feel like I shook a 40 pound monkey off my back," said Gugelmin. "It's
hard to describe. Of course I feel great. We've been working for a long time
for this. We knew it was coming. We've been so close so many times, but that's
all over now. The hardest thing has been all the people asking when you're
going to win the first one, but that's not going to happen anymore."
GUGELMIN/BLUNDELL RE-UP WITH PACWEST
Mauricio Gugelmin, Mark Blundell and PacWest Racing celebrated the former's
first win in CART competition by announcing that the two drivers have signed
two year contracts that will see them drive for Bruce McCaw's organization
through the end of the 1999 season.
BRAHMA ON THE MOVE?
Rumors at Vancouver have Brahma Beer moving from Patrick Racing to Tasman
Motorsports in 1998. Brahma has long coveted an association with Tasman's
Brazilian driver Andre Ribeiro, and it is thought that the team's Indy Lights
driver - Tony Kanaan (who took over the Indy Lights points race lead from
teammate Helio Castro-Neves with a second place at Vancouver) - will partner
Ribeiro next year.
As for Patrick, Scott Pruett looks secure in the lead seat but Raul Boesel's
future would seem to be in doubt. Early speculation suggests that Adrian
Fernandez, who is on the way out at Tasman, may take his sponsorship from
Tecate Beer and Quaker State to Patrick.
ZANARDI FINED
Following a rambunctious performance at the Vancouver Molson Indy Alex
Zanardi was hit with a $25,000 fine and a two race probation by CART chief
steward Wally Dallenbach. Although Zanardi hit or nearly hit just about
everything that moved during the course of the afternoon, it was his barging
match with leader Bryan Herta that drew Dallenbach's ire.
"It was a great race and this kind of race can provoke some of this action,"
said Dallenbach. "But as far as the Stewards were concerned it was an
unnecessarily rough action that will not be tolerated. It was unfortunate that
he took out the race leader, but we would have taken the same type of action
if his occurred with anybody in the field."
This is not the first time this season that Zanardi has charged from well
down the order. At Surfers Paradise he stormed back from seventeenth to fourth
in the closing laps and, of course, at Cleveland he came from last place to
win the race. Although his drive on the wide open spaces of Burke Lakefront
Airport was rightly hailed as one of the most brilliant victories in years,
many thought his fiercely aggressive comeback in Australia went well over the
line of acceptable conduct.
Those sentiments were widespread at Vancouver.
"Alex actually passed me two times today, and I was able to repass him once,"
said race winner Mauricio Gugelmin. "He made a very optimistic pass on Turn
Three, which I felt if I turned we're both gonna go home soon so I left the
door open but then I repassed him coming out of the corner. After that he
suddenly came back. I don't know where he came from, probably from the sky,
but he was coming flat-out. He passed me, then the next lap he pushed Bryan
off.
"I didn't know what was going on. I knew he has been running a slightly longer
track than we had today, because he was making mistakes and kept coming
back... He didn't actually hit me but I saw some of his actions and it was
pretty impressive."
Third placed Gil de Ferran had a similar view and similar sentiments.
"Alex passed me once today into Turn Three which seems to be pretty much a
similar story to what happened to Mauricio," said de Ferran. "I looked in the
mirror before Turn Two and thought 'He's far enough away.' So I braked by
myself into Three and kind of peaked in the mirror and saw this red thing
coming at a million miles per hour and thought 'This is not going to happen
today.'
"That was that. I simply couldn't turn into the corner otherwise we were all
going to go home early. So I had to wait, wait, wait and he almost took me to
the tires, but I couldn't get back around him on the exit."
His banzai moves on Gugelmin and de Ferran aside, Zanardi's most
controversial effort of the day came when he thrust his Target/Ganassi Reynard
into the Turn Five chicane as Bryan Herta turned into the corner. While
Zanardi was clearly the fastest car on the track, Herta was even more clearly
the leader of the race.
"I went for the position and he (Herta) turned into me," said Zanardi. "I was
completely alongside of him... He was leading the race, not fighting for
position with me, so why did he turn in?"
As might be expected, Herta took a rather different view of matters.
"In my view Zanardi's an idiot," he said. "He thinks he can just barge
through everybody and everybody will give him room. I think some people showed
him that we're not going to put up with that bullshit anymore. It's a bunch of
crap, and not what a champion should be exhibiting."
VANCOUVER MOLSON INDY ON THE MOVE
The 1998 Vancouver Molson Indy is expected to be contested on a new track
adjacent to the location that has hosted the race since its inception in 1990.
The new track will feature a 2 mile, 15 turn circuit running around the
perimeter of False Creek just to the east and south of the current track.
