F1: Volkswagen with Williams? The German Car Manufacturer Volkswagen comes back to racing making a deal with Williams. The announcement comes from a weekly German newspaper implying that the official agreement will be presented by the president of VW Ferdinand Piech and Frank Williams at the next Frankfurt Motorshow this month. The investment by Volkswagen, beating BMW eager to get their engine on the Williams, should be approximately US $75 million per year. The partnership should begin in 1999, when the contract with Renault will expire.

Hakkinen Disqualified Mika Hakkinen has been stripped of his 3rd plae finish in the Belgian Grand Prix last month, and the team fined, for using fuel which was found not to conform to the FIA rules. The FIA accepted that the both McLaren and Mobil had acted in good-faith, and a simple mistake had unfortunately been made. The new result of the Grand prix now means that Jacques Villeneuve moves a point closer in the World Championship table to Michael Schumacher. Schumacher has 66 points and Villenueve now has 55 with five races remaining. In 1995's Brazillian Grand Prix, Mika's current Team mate, David Coulthard, and Michael Schumacher has their points reinstated after fuel irregularities. Both their teams were still fined, and lost points from their Constructor's Championship Total.

Laguna Seca Preview September 3, 1997 Texaco/Havoline 300 Preview ZANARDI RETURNS TO SITE OF MOST FAMOUS WIN IN SEARCH OF PPG CUP By Nathan Siebens Contrary to ESPN advertisements, Alex Zanardi has not won the PPG Cup yet, but he comes to this weekend's Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey Featuring the Texaco/Havoline 300 at Laguna Seca Raceway needing only a sixth place finish to claim the 1997 PPG Cup. Zanardi is currently 37 points ahead of second place Gil de Ferran in the point standings and needs to score just eight points to take the championship outright, regardless of what de Ferran does in the race. De Ferran is the only other driver still with a mathematical chance to win the championship. In last year's event at Laguna Seca, Zanardi made a move that will be talked about and debated by race fans for years to come. Known as "The Pass," on the final lap Zanardi dove inside race leader Bryan Herta entering the left hander (Turn 8) at the entrance to the world famous corkscrew, slid off the track, then re-entered the circuit ahead of the stunned Herta and went on to win by 1.412 seconds. While some fans might believe that Zanardi's move put Herta in danger, Zanardi disagrees. "I thought what I did was something that had to be tried," said Zanardi in reflection of the move. "For sure there was some risk involved, but I didn't include Bryan in that risk. A lot of people don't understand that. To make that pass succeed, you need a lot of luck, but also talent, and also to be brave. Not because it is dangerous or a thrill, but the risk in such a maneuver is, if you fail, all the blame is on you. I did consider that and was prepared to take that if my race had ended against the wall." "Out of 100 drivers, five would try that pass," added team owner Chip Ganassi. "One would make it." Herta was devastated following the race, having his first career Indy car win stolen from him just four turns from the finish, but he returns to Laguna looking for revenge. "The Laguna race (last year) was tough to take, but I just have to forget about it and move on," Herta said. "I think it was a little dramatic for everyone because it was the last race of the year and we had all winter to think about it. But we'll be ready again this year and I'd really like to come back and win it. It would be a great way to avenge last year's finish." What might add more fuel to Herta's fire this weekend is the fact that Zanardi, who was trying to unlap himself after his second off-track excursion of the day, ran Herta, who was leading the race, into the tire barrier at last weekend's Molson Indy Vancouver. Zanardi was fined $25,000 and put on probation for two races when CART officials determined that Zanardi had been driving rough, not only in the situation with Herta but with several other drivers. Still, the fine and probation doesn't give the race back to Herta, who was very upset with Zanardi following the race. "I'm angry about getting stuffed in the tire barrier," said Herta. "He is trying to unlap himself and he uses the rest of the field as pinballs. He thinks he can just ram into people." This weekend's race could be very interesting for several reasons. First, Zanardi is on probation, so he'll have to mind his P's and Q's to keep from getting in more trouble with CART. Don't look for a repeat performance of "The Pass" from Zanardi this weekend. Second, Herta is hungrier than ever to win a race, so expect Herta to be very aggressive this weekend. Third, Herta's team owner and teammate, Bobby Rahal, who turned in his best qualifying effort in a long time by qualifying second at Vancouver is equally hungry. Rahal hasn't won a race in over five years, but has come close a couple of times this season. The fact that he has won four races at Laguna Seca in his career makes Rahal a favorite. Finally, don't forget about de Ferran. He needs to win a race if he is to have any chance at beating Zanardi to the PPG Cup and the Brazilian has had success at Laguna. De Ferran scored his first career Indy car victory at Laguna Seca two years ago in a very dominating performance. De Ferran and Walker Racing are overdue for a win and they know it. In addition to stealing the race win from Herta last year, Zanardi foreshadowed race day's events when he stole the pole position and new track record from Herta on the final lap of qualifying on Saturday. Zanardi led the first 27 laps until giving the lead to Herta for one lap and Zanardi's teammate Jimmy Vasser for one lap during his first pit stop. Zanardi regained the lead from Vasser on Lap 30 and led the next 13 circuits until Herta took the lead back in Turn 2 on Lap 43 when Zanardi's Firestone tires began to blister. Herta held the lead from that point on until the Zanardi made his fateful move on the last lap. Scott Pruett made a final lap pass of his own to steal third place from Jimmy Vasser, but Vasser's fourth place finish was still enough to give him the 1996 PPG Cup. Mauricio Gugelmin finished fifth. WHO'S HOT Mauricio Gugelmin - "Big Mo's" well-deserved first win at Vancouver has finally knocked the monkey off his back. Gugelmin has qualified well at every race this season, and this win might open the flood gates for the Brazilian. Look for his second win to come a lot sooner than the first one did. Jimmy Vasser - The reigning PPG Cup champion registered his best finish of the season with a second place finish at Vancouver. While brake problems cost him the win, Vasser proved that the fire still burns by holding on for a hard-earned second. Vasser could be tough in the final two races this season. Al Unser Jr. - Despite a dismal 22nd place qualifying effort, Unser Jr. proved once again the he knows how to race at Vancouver. He picked his way through the field to come home fifth. With this year's finish, Unser Jr. has finished in the top five in every race at Vancouver, including four wins at the Canadian circuit. WHO'S NOT Alex Zanardi - Sure he finished a respectable fourth at Vancouver, but there was nothing respectable about his performance in the race. Banging wheels with half the field and running the race leader into a tire barrier is not the way a champion should drive. CART's $25,000 fine and two race probation equates to little more that a slap on the wrist. Zanardi deserved a far more severe penalty. Paul Tracy - The point leader through the U.S. 500, Tracy has failed to complete more than one lap in the last three PPG Cup events and his championship hopes have gone out the window. It is possible that Tracy could fall out of the top five in points by season's end if he is not careful. Television - Once again the fans watching at home got gypped by television. While it was historic that Jeff Gordon became the second winner of NASCAR's "Winston Million," was it really necessary for ESPN to spend ten minutes interviewing "Wonder Boy", when the race had already run long and began cutting into the CART coverage? To throw more salt on the wounds, ESPN cut a good 30 laps out of the Vancouver broadcast without a word to anybody. What did take Bobby Rahal out of the race anyway? Laguna Saturday Results September 6, 1997 HERTA AND ZANARDI AGAIN By David Phillips Someone once said irony is proof that there is a God and that He has a sense of humor. If that be the case, then Bryan Herta and Alex Zanardi made a lot of believers at Laguna Seca Raceway today. A year ago here, Zanardi barged past Herta with all four wheels in the dirt to steal a last lap victory. A week ago at the Vancouver Molson Indy, Zanardi punted Herta out of the lead and into a tire wall, capping an incident-filled day for the Italian and adding one more chapter to what has become a frustrating CART career for Herta. Today it was Herta who took something away from Zanardi, in this case a PPG point for the pole position. Posting a new lap record of 1:07.895, Herta earned the third pole of his CART career and bumped Zanardi, yesterday's provisional pole sitter down to second on the grid. "I would say the irony is not lost on me," quipped Herta when asked if he gained a special satisfaction from his performance. However, Herta was quick to downplay any hard feelings that might be lingering from last week's encounter with Zanardi, however. "I would make two points," he said. "Number one, I think more than enough has been said about both incidents. Number two, this pole has nothing to do with it. It's the result of the crew giving me a great car. It has nothing to do with Vancouver or what happened here last year." In fact, Team Rahal gave Herta two good cars this weekend. It's just that the engine in the primary car blew-up shortly after Friday's qualifying session began, forcing Herta to take to the spare. A comedy of errors ensued, ranging from a failed air jack to a short tank of fuel and he wound-up eleventh on the overnight grid. Today was a completely different story, however. Overnight the team put the primary car's set-up on the spare and Herta responded by posting the second fastest time of the morning practice session at 1:08.853. Come the afternoon, and Herta clipped nearly a second off that time to earn his third pole. "We made a couple of small changes to the spare car, ones we'd made to the primary car before the engine blew yesterday," said Herta. "So we started this morning with the car the way the primary would have been yesterday. Then we made small adjustments during the session, but basically the team just gave me a great car." Zanardi had no complaints about his car, only about the traffic that prevented him from getting a clean run at Herta's time. "We encountered a lot of traffic today," he said. Sometimes you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's nobody's fault really, but it's a problem in our series - the traffic - and sometimes if you are unlucky it is difficult to put a good lap together." Like Herta, Zanardi also tried to downplay the fact that he will start next to Herta on the front row. "To me it doesn't change nothing," he said. "I think that enough has been said about last week. There is so much out there for me to gain tomorrow, I'm not even thinking about last week. It's over. What counts to me is the chance to carry something very important back to Italy." That something is, of course, the PPG Cup. Zanardi enjoys a comfortable 37 point lead over Gil de Ferran in the PPG Championship points race, and needs only to come out of the race tomorrow with a 22 point lead to clinch the title. De Ferran thus needs either to win or finish second and hope that Zanardi fails to score any points. As for Zanardi, he needs only finish seventh or better to clinch the title; thus he plans to take a conservative approach. "Yes, obviously I will try a different approach," he said. "That doesn't mean I gonna drive slow on purpose. I'm going to go as fast as I can and bring the car back to the end in a safe position. I'm in a comfortable position right now." Scott Pruett posted third fastest time on the day and thus earned a ringside seat for the start between Herta and Zanardi. "It's a great seat," he joked. "I feel like a voyeur." "Honestly, though, Bryan has so much to gain by winning a race; Alex has so much to lose by losing a race. I really think there's a lot more hype being generated over what could happen than what is really going to happen. They're both professionals. They both get a lot of money to do what they do and do it at the level they do. And with Bryan starting on the pole and looking for his first win, I think that's what he wants to do." PacWest twins Mark Blundell and Mauricio Gugelmin will start fourth and fifth, and had different outlooks on their performances. "We got held up like probably a lot of guys with a lot of traffic," said Blundell, "but overall we got another one in the bag and maintained a second row slot. I'm really confident for the race." "We made a lot of changes in the morning and got the car better but I still don't like the way it is," said Gugelmin. "I can't stop that well. Right now the car is driving me instead of me driving the car. I'm not that happy, but we're not that far back starting fifth." Sixth spot went to Zanardi's Target/Ganassi teammate Jimmy Vasser, who got dialed-out some of Friday's oversteer and moved up a notch on the grid as a result, while Greg Moore was seventh fastest at 1:08.992 after developing a misfire in the closing minutes of the session. Eighth quickest was the increasingly impressive Michel Jourdain, Jr. in what was not only the best qualifying performance of his budding CART career but the best ever for Payton-Coyne Racing. "In the morning the car was much better, but we didn't use new tires and with a few changes and the fresh tires the car was great for the last qualifying session," said Jourdain, who indulged in a harmless spin in the waning moments of the session. "Towards the end I couldn't do a clean lap with the traffic and in my last lap, when I was trying to improve my times I spun in Turn Three, but I didn't damage the car. I am grateful to the team because they gave me a very good car." At that Jourdain bested de Ferran, the only man with a chance of taking the PPG Cup from Zanardi. While Zanardi and others were bothered by slower traffic, de Ferran's main complaint came from the succession of red flags in the session that made evaluating his car's performance all the more difficult. "We had the same problem in qualifying we had in the morning," said de Ferran. "Mid-corner understeer and exit oversteer. The stop and go nature of these sessions definitely doesn't help. The tires never get clean and you throw changes at the car but can't do enough laps to properly evaluate the changes. You are trying to dial-in the car with less than complete information." De Ferran at least dialed-in his car one notch better than fellow Brazilian Andre Ribeiro who rounded out the top ten with a 1:09.062. Among the other notable performances were those turned-in by Paul Tracy and Michael Andretti. While Andretti grided 15th after crashing for the second day in a row, Tracy, who hasn't completed a lap in the past three races and who, along with Al Unser, Jr., has struggled with the Penske PC26 on the road courses, was a relatively upbeat 12th fastest, one spot behind Christian Fittipaldi. "We had a good qualifying session," said Tracy. We made some improvements on the car and it feels better than it has in a while. Unfortunately, I locked-up the brakes and made a mistake on my best lap. If that didn't happen we would have ended up in the top ten. "But we feel good about tomorrow. We've found that the Marlboro car is a good race car and we've done well here before, so hopefully with a little luck we'll have a strong finish." Tracy isn't the only one who feels good about tomorrow. Herta for one, is vastly more confident about his chances on Sunday than he was earlier this season when he edged Zanardi for the pole at Mid-Ohio. It all comes down to tires. Goodyear tires in Herta's case. "I'm much happier here than I was the last time I had the pole at Mid-Ohio," he said. "This tire is a lot more robust throughout the life of the tire than the ones were at Mid-Ohio. I did a lot of laps on the tires this morning and the balance seems good throughout. Hopefully, the tires won't be the story of the race." Herta doubtless hopes that the story of the race will be his first victory. For all the harsh words that have flown back and forth in recent days, Zanardi admitted he wouldn't be at all unhappy to see Herta win. "I'm confident," he said. "Firestone has given us a robust - I like that word - tire all year long. I think we are in good shape again tomorrow. The question is will Bryan's tires last the race. If they do I'll be happy to see Bryan win his first race - I'd much rather see Bryan win than Gil (de Ferran). Nevertheless, if luck presents me with the opportunity to win this race I will take it." * While the two drivers at the front of the grid downplayed their spirited rivalry, two drivers at the other end of the grid were initiating a new one. That would be P.J. Jones and Max Papis, who had an interesting set-to at the conclusion of qualifying. As Jones coasted down the hill from the Corkscrew with a blown engine, Papis turned into the side of the Castrol Reynard, whereupon the American came to a stop. Not content with whacking the Reynard on his first time past, Papis came to a stop beside Jones on his next lap - his "cool down" lap - and made a series of gestures towards the American. Jones responded by hurling his steering wheel at Papis, scoring a direct hit on the Italian's helmet. "The only thing I can figure out is that I must have held him up down there," said Jones. "If I did that I'm sorry but I didn't see him in my mirrors. We have enough problems to be doing that to each other." "When I was at the top of the hill my engine blew and I was just coasting down the hill. I was off on the side of the track and he took about two stabs at me. He hit me the second time and I don't think that was called for. He pulled up beside me and stopped. I didn't know what he wanted and I was ready for anything that might happen. When I was getting out I took the steering wheel off and tossed it his way because I thought he was coming out of the car. I'm sure we'll make up. These cars are too expensive to be doing things like this." "I was on a very, very fast lap and coming around Turn Eight PJ was going slow and I slid into him," said Papis. "On the next lap I slowed down to say I was sorry and he threw his steering wheel at me. I think it was just a bit of a misunderstanding." * Roberto Moreno was named to drive the Team Alumax Reynard/Mercedes for tomorrow's Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey after Patrick Carpentier opted to withdraw from the race. Carpentier suffered a broken collarbone while bicycle riding near his home in Indianapolis two weeks ago. Moreno subbed for the Canadian at Vancouver last week but Carpentier was back in the car on Friday and Saturday morning at Laguna Seca. However, after qualifying 22nd on Friday then practicing this morning, Carpentier decided he was suffering too much pain to drive in the race. * Mercedes-Benz has joined the Team USA Scholarship program, which will take aspiring Americans Buddy Rice and Matt Sielsky to Donnington Park, England for the EFDA Formula Opel European Union Series Nations Cup VIII, October 18-19. CART Online (September 7) -- Target/Chip Ganassi Racing won both the race and its second-straight $1 million PPG Cup Sunday at Laguna Seca Raceway as Jimmy Vasser won the Texaco/Havoline 300 and his teammate Alex Zanardi clinched the points championship at the Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey. Only an unintentional love tap between the teammates on the race's cool down lap tarnished an otherwise spectacular performance by Chip Ganassi's team. Vasser won his first race of the 1997 season while Zanardi's run to third place allowed the team to celebrate both a race win and the title at Laguna Seca Raceway for the second straight year. Last year at the Monterey track, Vasser wrapped up the PPG Cup while Zanardi won the race. This time, the tables were turned but the results were the same: A race win and the PPG Cup championship. But, as Vasser and Zanardi pulled alongside to congratulate each other on the cool down lap, they made light contact going into the course's downhill stretch. Zanardi continued to victory lane while Vasser unbuckled from his slightly damaged race car and hitched a ride to victory lane on the side pod of Max Papis MCI Reynard Toyota. Mark Blundell (Motorola Reynard Mercedes-Benz) finished second and set the races fastest lap of 1:10.960 seconds. He finished .543 seconds behind Vasser. Andre Ribeiro (LCI Reynard Honda HRR) and Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Reynard Honda HRR) rounded out the top five. Honda's placement of four race cars in the top five was a season-high mark. Pole-sitter Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford Cosworth) finished sixth after leading the opening laps of the race. The race was run caution free.

Laguna Seca Race Results September 7, 1997 MANY HAPPY RETURNS By David Phillips The ending wasn't QUITE the way Chip Ganassi might have scripted it. After all, Jimmy Vasser's Reynard-Honda finished the day sitting atop the Turn Nine curbing while Alex Zanardi rolled into Victory Lane to accept the plaudits as 1997 PPG CART World Series Champion. Then again, Vasser came to grief in a good cause: he collided with Target/Ganassi teammate Zanardi while taking a Victory Lap. It was the only time Vasser put a wheel wrong all day. He came from sixth on the grid to score his first CART victory since the 1996 U.S. 500, while Zanardi took an adventuresome third to clinch Target/Ganassi Racing's second straight PPG Cup. Last year, Zanardi won this race in spectacular fashion, taking to the dirt to pass Bryan Herta on the final lap, while Vasser clinched the PPG Cup with a fourth place finish. Herta would also play a key role in this year's race, as he used his third career pole to good advantage, bolting into the lead from Zanardi, Scott Pruett and Vasser at the green flag. Herta was in a confident frame of mind at Laguna Seca, much more so than when he won the pole at Mid-Ohio and led early only to fall out when one of his Goodyear tires failed. "I'm much happier here than I was the last time I had the pole," he said. "This tire is a lot more robust throughout than the ones were at Mid-Ohio. Hopefully, the tires won't be the story of the race." Although Herta's optimism initially seemed well founded, by Lap 15 Zanardi was all over the Shell Reynard. In light of the sanctions levied against him by CART officials for punting Herta out of the lead at Vancouver last week - not to mention the fact that he would win the championship merely by finishing seventh - Zanardi was loathe to take any risks. "At the beginning my goal was not to get in front of Bryan," he said. "I was happy to take second and if he won the race maybe he would be a little less mad. But at one point he was in big trouble and trying very hard to maintain his position. I think he went a little over the line driving to the left and then to the right trying to keep me behind him." Zanardi's conservatism enabled the Firestone-shod cars of Pruett, Vasser, Mauricio Gugelmin, Blundell and young Michel Jourdain, Jr. to close on the leaders. Come Lap 22 and Zanardi's patience was exhausted. He tried an outside move on Herta in Turn Three and got shoved into the dirt for his troubles. Pruett stormed by the two of them into first, with Zanardi dropping to fourth, which became third when Herta ran wide in Turn Six trying to keep Vasser at bay. "I thought the tires would be a little more durable," said Herta. "We really didn't have any indication during the weekend that they were going to go of like they did...It got so bad that I was just flying all over the place. I was trying to hold those guys off and keep the lead, thinking maybe if I could catch a yellow or something I could get into the pits and get another set of tires and be O.K. It wasn't to be." Pruett led four laps before pitting, while Vasser waited until Lap 27 to stop and maintained the lead on the strength of a quicker pit stop. Zanardi settled into third ahead of Gugelmin and Blundell while Andre Ribeiro leapt from eleventh to sixth after a blindingly fast stop by the Tasman team. Meanwhile, Gil de Ferran, who needed to win or finish second to prevent Zanardi clinching the championship, was a distant seventh just ahead of Greg Moore. Herta's off course-excursion dropped him to eighth spot where he ran ahead of an impressive Max Papis in the Reynard- Toyota while Jourdain was ninth after a slow pit stop ahead of Bobby Rahal, Christian Fittipaldi, Gualter Salles, Dario Franchitti, Richie Hearn, Al Unser, Jr., Raul Boesel and Adrian Fernandez. Missing already were Michael Andretti and Paul Tracy, who fell out with electrical and engine problems, respectively, while Hearn and Moore were destined to join them on the sidelines due to transmission and engine problems on the Della Penna and Players Forsythe entries. The order up front remained much the same until the second round of stops when Blundell beat Zanardi, Gugelmin and Pruett out of the pits to take second place on Lap 56. The next lap saw Zanardi take a stab at making it a Target/Ganassi 1-2 only to have Blundell firmly rebuff his overtaking attempt at 165 mph cresting the hill past the pits. Undeterred, the Italian went for the inside in Turn Two only to slither off into the dirt, regaining the track in fifth behind Vasser, Blundell, Gugelmin and Pruett with Ribeiro closing fast and de Ferran's dim title hopes growing fainter with each passing lap. Behind the Valvoline Reynard, Jourdain's fine run ended with a blown engine on Lap 69. Two laps later Fittipaldi pulled off with a broken rear suspension while Rahal crawled into the pits on Lap 76 with a blown transmission. With Vasser, Blundell and Gugelmin out of reach, Zanardi settled in behind Pruett for a tactical run to the finish, conceding fifth to Ribeiro on Lap 72. Wisely so. "When I saw Andre coming a million miles an hour I moved over," said Zanardi. "He knew I had lots to lose and he was smart to do that. He knew that I knew that any place ahead of de Ferran was good for me. So I let him go. I thought 'He won't be happy with fifth place; he's gonna try to pass Pruett and maybe he'll take him off." Zanardi's premonition was fulfilled on Lap 79 when Ribeiro clouted the Brahma Reynard in Turn Two, knocking Pruett out of the race and falling behind Zanardi in the process. Although Blundell shadowed Vasser to the finish, he was never quite able to make a move on the soon to be dethroned champion. "I think we might have had a little more for Vasser," said Blundell, "but to be honest, we didn't get that many breaks with the backmarkers. We certainly had the performance in the car but it would have been a tough move on him anyway." The PacWest team lost a likely two-three finish when Gugelmin's brakes failed approaching the Turn Two hairpin on the final lap and the Hollywood Reynard plunged into the tire wall, fortunately with no injury to its driver. "Something happened in the right rear corner," said the Vancouver winner. "It lost fluid so I lost the brakes completely." Zanardi thus was promoted to third place while Ribeiro held on for fourth ahead of de Ferran who clinched second place in the PPG Championship. "Trailing Alex by a fair margin we obviously needed the unexpected to happen," said de Ferran. Obviously it didn't happen, so we were fortunate to finish the race and clinch second-place in the championship. "The car was set-up very well, as usual. I had a small problem with the front tires wanting to go away which made the car difficult to handle at times. Now we can go to Fontana and concentrate on winning without worrying about points. I give tremendous praise to Derrick Walker and his team, they are absolutely top-notch and have given me a great opportunity for success." Herta soldiered home to sixth place ahead of Salles and Boesel, while Gugelmin was credited with ninth place ahead of Roberto Moreno, Unser and Parker Johnstone, the latter having spun off on Lap Five in a misunderstanding with Hearn. The day however, belonged to Target/Ganassi twins. And to emphasize that point, the two provided some post race hijinks by running into one another on the cool down lap. "Alex and I were joking earlier about what a great things his victory donuts have become," said Vasser. "And I was trying to think of something I could do to top it. I told I figured I'd just stuff my car into the fence on the cool-off lap and make the highlights on (ESPN) SportsCenter." "That was my fault," Zanardi conceded. "I was so happy (to clinch the title) that I was driving with my knees like I do back home in Italy so I can play with the radio. I thought I could do that and clap my hands...and I hit him." It may have not been the way it was scripted, but the pratfall put a memorable exclamation point on a season that saw Target/Ganassi become the first team to win back to back PPG Cups since TrueSports won the 1986 and '87 titles and the first to do it with different drivers since Penske Racing turned the trick in 1982 and 1984 with Al Unser and Rick Mears. The only question that remains is, what will they do for an encore? * The picture at Team KOOL Green for 1998 appears to be taking shape in the form of a one car CART team, more than likely with Dario Franchitti as the driver. "Dario is certainly on the short list," said team owner Barry Green at Laguna Seca. "He's impressed the hell out of everybody on pit lane this year; his style is certainly seems suited to Indy cars. But we've got to get approval from KOOL." * Franchitti's likely departure from Hogan Racing would seem to open-up another option for Adrian Fernandez who is also thought to be in negotiation to join Scott Pruett at Patrick Racing. * Christiano de Matta scored his third win of the 1997 PPG Firestone Indy Lights Championship at Laguna Seca, edging Tasman Motorsports teammates Tony Kanaan and Helio Castro-Neves for the win. By finishing second and third, Kanaan and Neves guaranteed Tasman Motorsports of third Indy Lights title since 1992. Kanaan now leads Neves in the points race 152 to 141 and the two will decide the championship in the final race of the season at California Speedway in three weeks' time. * Speaking of Tasman, the team is the first CART organization to feel the affect of the impending restrictions on tobacco advertising as Marlboro Latin America has decided not to renew its sponsorships of Tasman's CART and Indy Lights cars in 1998. Andre Ribeiro is certain to return to the team next season, likely with backing from Brahma Beer and with Kanaan as a teammate. De Matta is widely tipped to drive one of the team's Indy Lights cars but the second seat is wide open as of now. * Mark Blundell's second place at Laguna Seca clinched the Manufacturers Championship for Mercedes-Benz. * The Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey went flag to flag without a full course yellow, the first CART race to do so since Al Unser, Jr. won the Cleveland Grand Prix in 1994. * With his first win of the 1997 season at Laguna Seca, coupled with his second place in the Vancouver and the fact that he has led the most laps in both events has propelled Jimmy Vasser - the forgotten man through much of the year - into third place in the PPG Cup standings. With Alex Zanardi having clinched the PPG Cup and Gil de Ferran securing a lock on second place, third place will be up for grabs at the Marlboro 500 between Vasser (128), Paul Tracy (121), Mauricio Gugelmin (119), Greg Moore (111) and Michael Andretti (108). F1: Italian GP report When the race started Alesi made the most of his pole position, whilst Frentzen held 2nd and Coulthard made another of his charging starts and was up to third, with Fisichella, Villeneuve and Hakkinen trailing behind. For the first few laps Alesi pulled around 0.4 second a lap over Frentzen, whilst Coulthard was stuck behind and unable to make further progress. Schumacher by the end of lap 1 was already up to 7th place from his rather lowly grid position. On lap 4, Diniz had what appeared to be a relatively minor off - sideways - but was clearly damaged, pulling into the pits to retire. At the front Alesi kept his gap over Frentzen at around 2 seconds, whilst Coulthard was pushing hard for his place. On lap 8 the next accident occured, when Katayama somehow damaged his left front wheel (it was not clear if it was before or during the accident). The suspension was damaged badly and he retired. By lap 12, Alesi had a 2.9 second lead over Frentzen, and Coulthard continued to harry him for the place. In 5th place, Frentzen's team mate Villeneuve was being harried by Coulthard's team mate Hakkinen. Verstappen pitted on lap 12 and retired with a hydraulic problem, followed by Salo for a routine pit stop a couple of laps later (one of the few on a two stopper). By lap 20, the Frentzen-Coulthard train was pulling away well from the pack behind, and catching Alesi, bringing the gap down to 1.5 seconds. The order stayed the same in the top 6 for all the way to the first round of pit stops - this what not the most memorable of races for overtaking. Villeneuve was the first to pit, rather early on around lap 27. Frentzen was now up to Alesi and trying to find a way past, whilst Coulthard was looking to Frentzen making a mistake. Frentzen soon followed Villeneuve pitward. Coulthards car was now starting to look a little ragged in second place. Fisichella (now third) pitted on lap 31, making the order Alesi, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Berger and Irvine. Alesi and Coulthard both pitted together, and yet again it was down to the teams to decide who would take the lead. The McLaren team won, and so Coulthard found himself effectively in the lead rejoining in 4th place, with Hakkinen, Schumacher and Berger (who had yet to stop) ahead. Alesi rejoined in 5th place, with Irvine in 6th. Hakkinen was now preparing for his stop, but had a rather bad in lap with traffic. Schumacher now had the lead, as Hakkinen rejoined the race. Schumacher pitted on lap 35 with a very fast 7.2 second stop, whilst Hakkinen was pit bound again. He apparantly flat spotted his tyres down to the canvas on a 10" x 5" area and the tyre went down. Coulthard was now truly in the lead, with Alesi, Frentzen, Fisichella, Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher behind. Ralf Schumacher made an impact on the race on lap 39 when he took Johnny Herbert. The German was ahead of Herbert - just - and then pulled onto the line before he was fully clear of Herbert. Result? Both touched wheels, with the Sauber launched into a ferociously out of control slide down the track and into the wall. Herbert hopped out uninjured. Ralf's car for a little while looked OK, but he was into the pits for a check, went out for a lap and returned with the car pulling in to one side. Ralf was clear that Johnny should have moved out of the way by breaking earlier to let him by cleanly. The young German clearly has some things to learn still about motor racing. For the rest of the race little happened. Hill's Arrows Yamaha had a rather major engine blow up, but otherwise the race continued in something of a procession. The order was Coulthard, Alesi, Frentzen, Fisichella, Villeneuve and Schumacher, and so it continued to the flag. Coulthard a deserving victor in a rather boring race.

HOT!!!!

auto-moto.349 vpoznanovic,
F1: Italian GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, David, on your second victory of the season, and on that magnificent start which brought you through from 6th on the grid to 3rd place at the first corner ... DC: The start is always one of the most important things you do in a race, because it is possible to spend the whole of a race trying to get past another competitor. At the start, though, it is possible to pass two or three cars quite easily, and that is why I have always concentrated myself on making good starts. I don't always get it right, but today I did! Q. How well did things go in the rest of the race? DC: I just tried to keep calm and stay out of trouble until the pit stops. I knew we would have a quick stop because we were able to run quite a long time longer than the others and that meant we would not have to put in so much fuel [as they did]. It was the key to getting past Jean. Q. You said that part of your strategy was to be watching Benetton. What was the plan? DC: The team obviously had a better view of everything, so they called the stops. It was down to the boys, who did a fantastic job - and we just nipped into the pits ahead of Jean, then nipped out again ahead of him. Q. How did you feel to have beaten him in the pits? DC: It confirmed what I had expected, and then it was my real belief that I could win the race. That was the key moment. Overtaking here is so difficult, so to win here is a complete team effort. Q. Was there more pressure in the first half or the second? DC: The first half, because you are trying to judge at what pace other people are going to run, and how long they will keep going until they make their stop. The second half was really just cruising. The best way to drive a race is of course to be driving the car flat out, but neither do you want to make a mistake once you have established a lead. And it felt very comfortable. Q. Your team has had some reliability troubles this year Were you worried about that happening again today? DC: Not at all. This weekend we actually found something on the car which may have contributed to the unreliability. It was modified this morning, at the track, and the warm-up confirmed that the problem had been improved. So I had no doubts at all about any part of the machinery. I knew brakes would not be an issue either. And the engine just kept on pulling. It was a great day for everyone. Q. This has been a difficult weekend for British people. Have you been affected by recent events? DC: Yes, I was thinking about it in the last ten laps. I know that a driver should always be paying full attention to the next corner, but my thoughts did go out to what happened yesterday. I was also wondering whether we should spray the champagne if we managed to win the race. In the end I had a quick conversation [by radio] and we felt it was the right thing to do. I am sure that everyone was thinking about it, including me as I drove round at 200 mph. I was happy to hear our national anthem at the end ... Q. Jean, after leading from pole position, I am sure you are a little disappointed with second place ... JA: Obviously yes: after doing a good first part of the race I was looking for a win, and my car was working really well until the end. Q. There was a period after lap 16 when your lead started to come down. Was there something wrong with your car? JA: I had a little bit of oversteer in low speed corners. It made it quite difficult to judge how to use the throttle. I had a little accident this morning like that, maybe because I was not being careful enough, and I lost the rear. When I started to have this same feeling again in the race, I slowed down a little bit. Q. Very soon after that you had Coulthard and Frentzen closing up behind you. Was that a lot of pressure? JA: Not really, because it is impossible for anyone to overtake here unless you make a mistake. So I was really concentrating on using the car to the maximum without making a mistake. And that is what I did. Q. Heinz-Harald, in the early stages you were the meat in a sandwich with Alesi and Coulthard. Was that exciting? HHF: Yes, I suppose so. At the beginning I picked up a bit of understeer and didn't want to risk pushing the tyres too much. I had a comfortable gap behind Jean, then towards the end of that first run I started to close up on him. But as he says, it is very difficult to find a place to overtake here. Q. Did you make your pit stop a little too early? HHF: Yes, from this aspect. But in the heat of a race it is difficult to get your judgements 100 per cent right. Now, after the race, we are a bit more experienced. It was obviously a good move by David to make his pitstop late. He was setting good lap times all the way through his first run, and his team was very quick in the pits. I have to congratulate them on that.

Flash Interviews Nobuatsu AOKI: "The temperature was much cooler than during practice and we decided to fit a softer rear tyre," says Aoki. "Halfway through the race the bike really started to slide and I had to slow down. I'm a little disappointed because I love this racetrack and was determined to get a good result." Takuma AOKI: "It was a good race but I am not satisfied with the result. I want to finish higher. The bike was good but I wish I had two more cylinders. I would like to have pushed harder in the corners but the surface of this track is abrasive and this is not good for tyre wear. That's why I lost some grip." Juan BORJA: "After two or three laps the rear started sliding," explains the rider. " I wasn't able to accelerate hard out of the corners. I don't know whether my tyre was too soft or if the chassis setting was inadequate, but in these conditions the race was quite difficult. It's a pity because the engine was going extremely well today." Luca CADALORA: "That was good fun. Criville and I went around half the track on the last lap both sideways on with smoke coming from the rear tyre. That was the most satisfying race of the season for me as we were so close to the front. We were truly competitive today but unfortunately we just lacked that bit of extra acceleration which would have meant I could have got past and on to the podium. It was a shame not to be up there as I think we deserved it in this race! "I really enjoyed riding the bike today. The new cylinders and electric system that Yamaha brought this weekend made a difference and we were very close. The bike was very good and the tyres were excellent. I hope we can do this again in Indonesia and Australia now." Loris CAPIROSSI: "I am angry and disappointed. I put a lot of effort into the race but there was something wrong with the bike and I could not any better than fifth place. I think I could have won today, it is so frustrating that I can't do what I feel I am capable of doing. " Alex CRIVILLE: "My aim today was to finish in the top three , so I am satisfied with the result in only my second race since injuring my hand at Assen. I feel much better and now, after this race, I know that my hand is getting better. It was very hard to follow the other riders and during the latter part of the race I could not use the clutch properly and I was in a lot of pain." Mick DOOHAN: "It was a hard close race , rather like I thought it was going to be. The conditions were a lot different today to what they have been during practice but although the track temperature was a lot cooler I opted to race on the tyres that I used yesterday. There was not a lot of rear grip and there was a bit of front-end chatter. I thought that Alex might drop away a bit towards the end because of his injury, but he toughened it out and was right there at the end. Checa was a real threat but he was losing time going into the straight and I was able to pass him without too much trouble. On the one before last lap I thought my chance of victory might have gone when my foot slipped off the footrest but Checa did not come by and I put my head down again and carried on pushing. It was good to win a grand prix here at Barcelona for the first time, although it was a bit of a shame for the home town boys who tried so hard. I knew I had to be aggressive to win this race and make sure that I did not let Checa come through on the inside on the final lap." Tetsuya HARADA: "It always seem to be the same problem. When I open the throttle the rear of the bike starts to slide, I don't have enough traction ,and it runs wide on the corners. On some tracks I can control it but it was not possible to do so here. Over the weekend we have tried many changes and modifications but nothing worked and the problem remained. It is pity because the engine was so fast, it was fantastic! It was an exceptionally bad day for me because I also had tyre problems and lost the lead in the championship. We must work really hard on this problem because it is still possible for to win the championship." Olivier JACQUE: " After only a few laps my front tyre was gone," explains the Honda rider. " Owing to the track temperature when we started, we took the option of fitting a softer tyre. But it just didn't last. Anyway, even after improving the chassis set-up in the warm-up, we were still so far from the truth. It wasn't enough to hope for fighting with the leaders." Tadayuki OKADA: "The problem I had today was a lack of grip, in fact all during the weekend it has been the same situation. We tried different suspension, in fact, everything we could think of during the three days but without success. I was running a different engine this weekend, which is similar to the one Mick uses, and I think this could have been part of the problem when it came to setting up the machine. After the race as I went round the track to get back to the pits, I ran over something that punctured my rear tyre. I had to leave the bike and get a lift back to the pits. I will go back to the original engine I have been using this year, at Sentul." Stefano PERUGINI: "I made a bad start and this was probably caused by the fact that I used a first gear that was too high. At the end of the first lap I was back in 19th place . Then after just three or four laps I started to lose grip and the bike started to slide. As I had crashed twice during practice I decided to retire, I am very disappointed. Doriano ROMBONI: "This morning I did not fell well and I developed a fever with a high temperature. I went to the Clinica but I still did not feel fit for the race, I should have been in bed not riding a motorcycle. I made a bad start and then caught Abe and I tried to pass him and pull away. But every time he came back and overtook me on the straight. Finally I got ahead of him three laps from the finish, but I am not satisfied with tenth place after the bike went so well in qualifying and I made the front row of the grid." Valentino ROSSI: "I did not make a very good start because the carburation was not correct and the engine was flat. When I put the machine in gear it was slow to pick-up and a lot of riders went by me. However the chassis and tyres were perfect and I was able to ride very fast in the turns and it was not so difficult to catch Sakata. When I caught him it was easy to go to the front. I am really happy to have won here at Barcelona because last year I crashed at the first corner." Tohru UKAWA: "That was a hard race and I'm very happy to be on the podium even though I would like to have been on the top step... The beginning of the race was not so fast, there were five of us fighting and that was great. On the last lap, Harada passed me on the straight because he has a really powerful engine. Then I passed him in the hairpin and when we crossed the line I did not know if I was third or fourth because we were so close!"

Doohan's twelfth breaks the record Circuit de Catalunya - September 14, 1997: Repsol Honda rider Michael Doohan won his 12th race of the season here today, after one of the closest contests all season. And it was another record for the Repsol Honda rider, who had already tied up his fourth championships in succession. Twelve wins in a season breaks the record set in 1972 by racing star Giacomo Agostini. With five riders battling for the lead for most of the race, the Catalunyan GP circuit outside Barcelona gave the 54,000 strong crowd one of the best 500-class races of the year. Japanese stars Nobuatsu Aoki (FCC Honda) and Tadayuki Okada (Repsol Honda) both had a turn up front, then home hero Alex Criville (Repsol Honda) led for a spell, in only his second race back after missing five through injury. In the end, the battle was between another local hero Carlos Checa (Movistar Honda), bidding to repeat his win here last year. He was less than half a second behind Doohan at the finish, with Criville third, only just more than a second behind him. Luca Cadalora (Red Bull Yamaha) was also in the thick of the battle, finishing a close fourth, with Aoki losing touch only in the closing stages. Another 15 seconds back, Okada finally prevailed in his battle with V-twin Repsol Honda rider Takuma Aoki, after slipping back from the front. The battling carried on down the field. Eighth place was hotly disputed between Kenny Roberts Junior (Marlboro Modenas), Juan Borja (Elf 500) and Alex Barros (Honda V-twin). Barros crashed out with seven laps remaining; Roberts just headed Borja over the line. Doriano Romboni (Aprilia V-twin) won another close battle from Honda V-twin mounted privateer Regis Laconi and Norifumi Abe's works Rainey Yamaha. Doohan was already champion, and now has 320 points. Nobuatsu Aoki made progress in his quest for second overall, with 166 to Okada's 159. Criville has 131 and Cadalora 129. 250cc Race - 23 laps, 108.721km Ralf Waldmann rode the race of his life to take over the World Championship lead today. The Marlboro Honda rider had been leading early on, but ran off the track and over the gravel, only staying on board by a miracle. He rejoined in ninth place, but carved his way through to rejoin the leading battle, then to cross the line a crucial half-second ahead of championship rival Max Biaggi (Marlboro Honda). A couple of seconds behind Tohru Ukawa (Benetton Honda) pipped erstwhile points leader Tetsuya Harada (Aprilia) by two hundredths of a second. The four had been in front for most of race distance, with fifth and sixth-placed Loris Capirossi (Aprilia) and Olivier Jacque (Chesterfield Honda) dropping out of the group in the closing stages. Takeshi Tsujimura was a strong seventh on the private FCC Honda, comfortably clear of Haruchika Aoki's works Honda. A little way back, Noriyasu Numata (Suzuki) prevailed over Osamu Miyazaki (Edo Yamaha), Jeremy McWilliams (QUB Honda) and Emilio Alzamora (Fortuna Honda), finishing in a tight group. The championship is now even closer. Waldmann Harada by three points - 214 to 211; while Biaggi has also closed in, now on 205. Jacque is fourth on 169; then Ukawa has 145. 125cc Race - 22 laps, New World Champion Valentino Rossi (Nastro Azzurro Aprilia) came through from the pack to peg back fast starter Kazuto Sakata (UGT Aprilia) and win for the tenth time this season. Sakata had built up a lead of more than four seconds before running into engine problems on the tenth lap. It took Rossi six more laps to catch up, the pair well ahead of their pursuers. Noboru Ueda (Pileri Honda) moved ahead of a big pack in the closing stages to claim third, keeping alive his hopes of second position overall. Only Tomomi Manako (UGT Honda) can catch him - he was fifth today. Mirko Giansanto (Matteoni Honda) was fourth, narrowly ahead of Manako, Lucio Cecchinello (Spidi Honda) and first-lap leader Roberto Locatelli (Axo Honda). Gianluigi Scalvini (Axo Honda) dropped out of this group to lead the next pack across the line, less than a tenth ahead of Garry McCoy (Marlboro Aprilia), Fred Petit (RMS Honda), Masaki Tokudome (Docshop Aprilia) and Jorge Martinez (Airtel Aprilia). Rossi's points lead, already unassailable, grew further - 286 points to Ueda's 200. Manako has 163, Sakata 138 and Tokudome 102.

:) --) Oh, and btw - Alezi stvarno prelazi u Sauber. Benetton wins battle for Fisichella LONDON (Sep 15, 1997 - 13:04 EDT) - Formula One racing team Benetton won the race for the services of rising star driver Giancarlo Fisichella after a High Court ruling Monday. Justice Jacob ordered the Jordan team, currently employing the Italian driver, to write to FIA's Contract Recognition Board saying he will be driving for Benetton next season. The judge ordered a three-day stay on the order to give Jordan the chance to appeal. Ian Phillips, the team's commercial manager, said after the hearing that team owner Eddie Jordan would make his decision on whether to continue the court battle by Tuesday morning. Phillips refused to comment on whether the loss of Fisichella would open the door to British world champion Damon Hill who is seeking a more competitive car for next season.

Alesi-Sauber official Jean Alesi has signed a two-year deal with the Sauber team. He will team-up with Johnny Herbert. It was first thought that Alesi could stay with Benetton if Fisichella stayed with Jordan, but Alesi didn't want to wait for that decision. Alesi said: "I am very much looking forward to working with Peter Sauber and his team. I was very surprised by them this season and I think they have the potential to be a top team in the near future. I hope my experience from driving for Ferrari and Benetton will be good to them."

Emmo back on his feet after successful surgery CART Online (September 13) -- Following successful reconstructive spinal surgery last week at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, 1989 PPG Cup champion Emerson Fittipaldi was able to take a few steps earlier in the weekend with the aid of a special frame. Fittipaldi, 50, shattered a vertebra in his lower back last Sunday in an ultralight airplane crash near his home in Brazil. The injury came less than 14 months after the driving legend suffered a fractured neck vertebra and other injuries in a racing accident at Michigan Speedway in late July of 1996. This earlier injury was also treated at the Miami hospital. The recent injury had reportedly left Fittipaldi with paralysis in his left leg prior to last week's surgery, but doctors expect Fittipaldi to walk again. He could leave the hospital in a week, but Fittipaldi will have to wear a brace for half a year. The plane dropped 300 feet into the swamp when its motor stalled. Fittipaldi's six-year-old son Luca, the only passenger, suffered only scratches. No announcements about Fittipaldi's future racing career have been made.

Hill, sacked by Arrows on Wednesday, where be is replaced at Arrows by Finland's Miko Salo of Tyrrell, is now believed to have been lined up to replace rising Italian star Giancarlo Fisichella, who is headed for Benetton. Jordan, owned by Irishman Eddie Jordan, will hold a press conference at 0930 (0730 GMT) at Zeltweg on Friday morning where they were expected to reveal that they had brought Hill on board alongside Ralf Schumacher, brother of double world champion and championship leader Michael. The presence of Hill would undoubtedly boost the ambitious outfit's profile while his undisputed expertise in technical feed-back could be an important factor as they link-up with new engine partners Mugen-Honda next year. Hill, fastest in early practice for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, reportedly wanted some 5-million pounds ($7.50-million) to sign up but Jordan backers Benson and Hedges are understood to ready to help meet his demands.

Petak, 19. "Ovo nam daje dantastičnu kombinaciju mladosti i iskustva.

Berger drops few hints about racing future ZELTWEG, Austria (Sep 20, 1997 - 13:21 EDT) - Gerhard Berger, the oldest man in Formula One, is giving nothing away about his plans for the future. The 38-year-old Austrian veteran, considered by many to be the last of the F1 playboys, made his Grand Prix debut in Austria in 1984 on the old Oesterreichring track in the Styrian Alps. Sunday's race on the now renamed A1-Ring, which has undergone a transformation and is staging a race for the first time in 10 years, is likely to be his last before his home fans. What comes next remains a mystery. Berger has dropped many hints that he knows exactly what he will be doing next year. "I can't think up any intelligent answers for that question anymore," said Berger. "I see a lot of beaches and sun in my future." He may even consider going into acting. When asked if he could imagine taking part in a movie about the sport, which Sylvester Stallone is planning to produce and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is supporting, Berger jokingly replied: "Maybe, if it is a sex movie." On a more serious note, the Austrian said he had several "really good options for next year." It is unlikely to be in Formula One since virtually all top teams have announced their lineups for next season and Berger is leaving Benetton. He won the German Grand Prix this season, his 10th career victory in 206 races. "I have a few possibilities outside of motor racing," he said. "But I find it difficult to imagine a life without Formula One." The Austrian media have linked Berger with BMW, who will be making a comeback to the sport in 2000 by providing engines for Williams. Berger, whose first F1 car was an ATS BMW-Turbo, said he still had a "close relationship" with the German automobile manufacturers. Close observers believe Berger will be helping BMW create an F1 engine for Williams and that he would serve as their test driver. Some even say Berger may then return to sport with the Williams-BMW outfit in two year's time. However, Williams technical director Patrick Head insisted on Friday: "We don't know anything about Berger becoming our test driver."

BTW, zna li neko zašto je Šumaher drugi put otišao u box? Na RTLu su bile reklame ...

> Zasto je M.Schumacher dobio stop-go kaznu?
