F1: Austrian Grand Prix Report On the formation lap Berger pulled into the pits - not the best start to his home Grand Prix - with a warning light on. The team sent him by without even stopping at the pits. He would have to now start from the pit lane and fight his way through. At the front, Villeneuve led away, but Hakkinen was soon in the lead with Trulli in second place. Villeneuve was already down to third and falling back further as Barrichello also got by. Not the start the Canadian wanted, especially as Magnussen was also harrying him for fourth place now. By the end of the first lap Hakkinen was out, slowing as he reached the pit straight. The engine apparantly gave up the ghost, so now Trulli was in the lead. And he made the most of it. For lap after lap Trulli commanded the race, setting fastest lap after fastest lap. By the end of lap 6 he had a 2.1 second lead over Barrichello, who had Villeneuve another second behind. The top six settled on Trulli, Barrichello, Villeneuve, Magnussen, Frentzen and Michael Schumacher. On lap 13, Alesi took Irvine with Ralf Schumacher following on. A change occured on lap 20 when Fisichella set the fastest lap, clearly hurt Trulli set the record straight again the following lap. On lap 24, Villeneuve got by Barrichello on the inside of turn 2 and set to work on Trulli's 10 second lead. The order was now Trulli, Villeneuve, Barrichello, Frentzen, Magnussen and Schumacher. It was a rather unusual sight to see the Williams' being pushed by the Stewarts. It soon became clear that they were on a different race to the rest, stopping for the first of two stops on lap 27 & 28. The order was now Trulli, Villeneuve, Frentzen, Schumacher, Coulthard and Hill. It then settled again until the main pit stops started. It started with Berger on lap 32, who had a problem with the fuel nozzle going on first time (this really wasn't Bergers race). Diniz was also soon in, followed by Nakano. The Williams team were ready for Frentzen, then the refueller was ready for Villeneuve, then everyone was ready for Villeneuve, then everyone put their stuff away. Trulli now pitted from the lead, and this was to be the deciding moment of the race, as Trulli rejoined the race straight into traffic. Villeneuve now had the lead from Frentzen. Alesi and Irvine collided, the Irishman gave the French-Sicillian enough room, but Alesi wanted more. Result? One launched Benetton out on the spot, and the Ferrari limping its way back to the pits, only to retire. Morbidelli in the Sauber was lucky to avoid being involved, actually stopping on the track before resuming his race. At Williams they were ready for a stop again. Schumacher made easy work of getting by Frentzen (though this would have repercussions later, as he did this under waved yellows.....). Villeneuve made his stop, and got out ahead of Trulli. Villeneuve had the advantage now. The order was now Schumacher, Frentzen, Coulthard, Villeneuve, Trulli and Ralf Schumacher. Schumacher and Frentzen pitted together, along with Ralf. The order was now Coulthard, Villeneuve, Trulli, Ralf, Fisichella and Michael. Coulthard pitted the next lap, and got ahead of Frentzen on the track. Fisichella then made a move on Trulli, but he had still to stop. It was now that Schumacher was awarded a 10 second stop/go penalty for passing under waved yellows. It would drop him way down the field. Barrichello now made his second stop, and rejoined in front of Schumacher in the pit lane, and further hinder Schumachers championship challenge. On lap 52, word came that Trulli didn't get enough fuel and may have to come in again to get some more, or else lean-off the engine. Coulthard was now very close on Trulli's tail, who was backing off somewhat. Suddenly a Prost had it's engine let go in a very big way, and dropped it all over turn 2. Luckily it was not Trulli, but Nakano. Unfortunately on the same lap Trulli's Prost did exactly the same thing, dumping its sump over the following Coulthard. Coulthard was now up to second. Word later came the problem was due to the Prost's losing contact with the ground over bumps, and so over-revving the engines. Schumacher was now pushing very hard to get into the points, and fought tooth and nail with Barrichello and Hill. Coulthard was now catching Villeneuve, but it soon became clear that the Canadian was mearly backing off a little. Who needs to win by a country mile? Schumacher pushed Barrichello very hard, and soon the Stewart was off the track and out of the race. A few laps later Schumacher made a rather bullying move on Hill to take the sixth place. The race ended with Villeneuve the victor from Coulthard, Frentzen, Fisichella, Ralf Schumacher and Michael. The star of the show, however, had to be Trulli. It will be a crying shame that he probably will not be racing next week (as Panis is due to return to Prost), but Nakano who made no impression in the same car in this race will.

Intervju sa menadžerom Mihaela Šumahera, Vilijem Veberom (Willi Weber) Celtveg, 22. Septembar 1997. Veber: Mi smo osvojili dva Svetska šampionata i pod mnogo većim pritiskom. Veber: Da i dalje vozi trke bez incidenata. Da li ste organizovali nešto specijalno povodom Mihaelovog jubileja sledeće nedelje u Nirburgringu. Veber: Naravno!

Fontana Preview September 24, 1997 GUGELMIN, PRUETT AMONG FAVORITES AT SEASON FINALE By Nathan Siebens Mauricio Gugelmin and Scott Pruett will be looking to earn one more piece of hardware this weekend as the PPG CART World Series wraps up its 1997 campaign at the new California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. with the Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota. Gugelmin, who scored his first career Indy car win two races ago was quickest in a two-day test earlier this month with a lap of 234.6 mph on the new 2-mile superspeedway. The PacWest Racing pilot was two miles an hour quicker than his next closest competitor, Jimmy Vasser, during the test. The Brazilian started on the front row for the U.S. 500 earlier this year at Michigan Speedway and ran up front in the race until electrical problems cost him five laps and he finished sixth. Gugelmin's speed during the test at Fontana coupled with his Michigan performance, a track that is very similar to Fontana, makes Gugelmin optimistic about his chances this weekend. "I was happy with the car in general," said Gugelmin following the test. "Everything worked fine. We were quick out of the box, but I expected that after our Michigan performance. "I hope it will be a great race. It's unusual to end the year with a 500 miler. We'll be racing hard to go after third in the PPG Cup standings. That's what I'll be going for, but in a 500 mile race there are so many 'ifs' and 'buts.' Still, I think we've got the car." PacWest Racing Group has been impressive in 500 milers over the last two years, as Gugelmin and teammate Mark Blundell have combined to score 72 points for PacWest over the last three 500 mile events. Target/Chip Ganassi Racing is the next closest, having scored 44 points in the last three 500s. However, the team has yet to win a 500 mile race and looks forward to scoring that elusive first win this weekend. "Our record in 500 milers is something we take pride in," said PacWest vice president of racing operations John Anderson. "The team and the drivers have a good idea of what it takes to go quickly, and we have a good basic setup. We've had several podium finishes on the superspeedways, but we still need to take that next step and actually win one. We rate our chances at Fontana highly." Another driver whose chances for winning are high is Brahma Sports Team driver Scott Pruett. Pruett claimed the pole at the U.S. 500 and led 32 laps before crashing in Turn 2 after 350 miles in fourth place. Pruett's exciting victory in the 1995 Marlboro 500 at Michigan Speedway proves that he knows what it takes to win a 500 miler, and he too likes his chances this weekend. "I am looking forward to Fontana," said Pruett. "This will be the first time in my career I have ended the season on a superspeedway oval. The Firestone tires have been outstanding on the speedway ovals and this year Ford has really stepped-up and improved both the power and reliability of the engine. We tested in Fontana earlier this year and ran great. That coupled with our performance at Michigan indicates to me that we should be in great shape for the race."

FRANCHITTI OUT, ROBBY'S BACK One driver that probably will not have a chance to win is rookie Dario Franchitti. In the aftermath of the persistent rumors that the Scot is headed to Team KOOL Green in 1998 with Honda power, Hogan Racing has announced that Robby Gordon will take Franchitti's seat in the #9 Reynard/Mercedes-Benz this weekend. Team owner Carl Hogan and Mercedes-Benz, who brought Franchitti to the PPG CART World Series, are said to be very upset with Franchitti for turning his back on what has become a competitive program in a very short period of time. That said, Gordon is happy to be back in the cockpit of a PPG Cup car for the season finale. "I look forward to being a part of the Hogan Racing team and hope to contribute to a successful weekend," said Gordon. "In preparation for 1998, and so that we are completely focused on our performance on our performance at Fontana, we have entered into an agreement with Robby for the Marlboro 500," added Hogan. "His 1998 status will be discussed after this weekend's race." The move apparently takes Franchitti out of the chase for Rookie of the Year honors unless a team (like Team KOOL Green?) decides to field a second car for Franchitti. Ironically, it is not out of the realm of possibility that Team KOOL Green would field a two car effort in 1998 with Franchitti and Gordon as the drivers. The Silly Season is in full swing.

WHO'S HOT Target/Chip Ganassi Racing - Jimmy Vasser's win and Alex Zanardi's third place finish at Laguna Seca wrapped up the second consecutive championship for the Team Target. In a sport that is as highly competitive as the PPG CART World Series, any team that wins two consecutive championships is something special. Mercedes-Benz - While a Honda powered driver won the PPG Cup, Mercedes had a highly successful 1997 campaign, winning eight races, five pole positions and scoring 17 podium finishes. Mark Blundell's second place finish at Laguna locked up the Manufacturer's Championship for Mercedes, which hadn't won a race since the 1995 season finale until Paul Tracy opened the flood gates with a win at Nazareth. Firestone - The tire manufacturer has won every CART and IRL event it has entered since Indianapolis in May, and was one of the major reasons that Zanardi won the championship. In addition, Bridgestone, Firestone's sister company, has been sneaking up on the competition in Formula One, and may score a breakthrough victory before the year is out. WHO'S NOT Swift - While the new chassis has been competitive this season, it hasn't won since its first time out at Homestead. The chassis manufacturer should benefit from Della Penna Motorsports and possibly one or two more teams running the Swift in '98. Ford-Cosworth - Like the Swift chassis, the Ford-Cosworth engine has also been competitive this season, but hasn't won a race since Scott Pruett won in Australia. A little bit of luck here or there would have certainly put the Cosworth in victory circle more times, but that's racing. Goodyear - Both Swift and Ford-Cosworth could place some of the blame for not winning on Goodyear, as Firestone has completely dominated the long-time Indy car tire manufacturer this season. Firestone's dominance has many established Goodyear teams taking a long, hard look at jumping ship.

F1: Austrian GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Jacques, you must take particular pleasure in winning this race today! JV: The pleasure is purely the nine points that I have taken back from Michael. It's too bad he got the one point at the end there, but the championship is looking much better for me now. Q. What happened at the start? JV: I let the clutch go too fast and got a lot of wheelspin, so I lifted the throttle for a moment. But by that time Hakkinen had got past me and Trulli was next to me under braking. I was also sliding a little too much, and when Barrichello came alongside me in the hairpin I couldn't get out of the corner ahead of him. For two or three laps the car was sliding a lot and I really had to push to keep Magnussen behind me. Once the heat got into the tyres the car was easy to drive. Q. Did you think the Stewart cars could challenge you? JV: Not so much: I was more worried about Trulli's Prost, because I thought it would be a stronger car through the whole race. We had seen the Stewart drivers having problems with their tyres in qualifying, so I knew that they would start slowing towards the end of their stint. I made my move when I saw Barrichello start sliding. I could have taken a couple of risks with him a couple of laps earlier, but I didn't want to bang wheels with him and go off the track. Once I got in front of him it was just a question of pushing as hard as I could, to get close to Trulli. Q. Did you stay out a little longer than planned before making your pit stop? JV: We had planned to stay out as long as possible, for as long as we had the fuel, and that's what we did today. It worked out really well today, because that is how we got Trulli. Q. Were you worried about David Coulthard catching you in those final laps? JV: Yes, because I was stuck in traffic behind Gerhard for a while. I was taking it very easy then because I know from a recent experience how difficult he is to lap. I didn't want to take any risks. Once I knew that David was running fast I started pushing. But I knew I could lap in the elevens, so I was pacing myself on David's lap times. Q. David, after qualifying 10th you must be happy to have finished 2nd. DC: Yes, I am very happy. I thought before the start that it would be a good result for me today if I could get two points. But with the yellow flag situation for Michael, and again with a very good pit stop, it was just a question of trying to hang on to the end. Q. Did you enjoy the close racing that you were involved in? DC: I had a lot of fun from the start. I managed to pass Michael before the first corner, then he passed me and I repassed him before the second corner. It was fun to be battling and not to use [the downforce from] your wing, which is what normally happens when you try to fight someone through a corner. I gained a place during a pit stop, which was thanks to the mechanics. These good six points fit nicely with the win I got at Monza. Q. You seemed faster in the second part of the race ... DC: I was certainly in better shape on the second set of tyres than on the first. In terms of traffic, this has been one of the worst races I have ever had. There were two Benettons in front of me, and then a Prost which blew up in front of me, and there were not many blue flags being waved out there. Q. HeinzHarald, you lost places to David, and also to Michael Schumacher ... HHF: Yes, under the yellow flag. Maybe you didn't notice, but it was a situation when I was behind Gerhard and the group included Michael and David behind me. There was an accident at the second hairpin when somebody spun off, leaving us with nowhere to go. That's where Michael lost his points ... Q. After this string of third places, what can you do to improve for the Nurburgring? HHF: Go faster! Q. Jacques, now that you're back in contention for the championship, how do you feel about next week's Luxembourg GP? JV: I feel great about Nurburgring because we beat Michael there last year. That is the best way to go into this next race. There is only one point between us, so the result could go either way. I think we will have a stronger package there, unless it is very cold which would be to Michael's advantage. Overall, though, we should have a better package than him and I feel confident.

F1: Luxemburg GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Jacques, on your seventh victory of the season. The McLarens looked very fast today, but you managed to hold the gap to David Coulthard right past the first pit stops. Was that difficult? JV: I managed to hold the gap, but I was surprised because we had a good pit stop and even though he had to put in a lot more fuel than we did, somehow he still had a big gap after the stops. I don't know what happened there. We are going to have to figure out why they are so quick. Their car seemed to be flying on this track with its long corners: this is a track where you normally have a lot of understeer, and their car seemed to be handling very well. We are going to have to figure something out. Q. Tell us more about what happened at the start. JV: It is very wide going into Turn 1 and I think we were just too many cars running abreast. My start was average and I was very surprised to see David coming through next to me even before I got into second gear. Even with extra fuel on board, both he and Mika seem to be taking amazing starts lately: we have to find something on our car to make sure we have good starts also. Going into Turn 1 there were at least three of us abreast, maybe more, and I was a little behind Heinz and David. But I hit the brakes later than they did, and it was OK until I banged wheels. I ended up running wide and because of that I could not stay in front of David. But if the two McLarens had finished today they would have beaten us anyway. Q. Any problems passing back markers? JV: I spent a lot of time behind Damon, But even when I was close to him, nobody showed him the blue flag. I don't why, because there were several times when I was close enough to him to make [the marshals] show blue flags and they never came out. Damon's team must have told him to move out of the way, because there wasn't one blue flag. Q. You were losing time in the closing laps, but then you got a radio message from your crew? JV: Yes, they woke me up! So I started pushing and on the next lap my engineer Jock Clear came on the radio and said, 'OK, point taken, you can relax again now.' I had a huge gap, but when you start slowing down there is a danger of losing concentration and falling asleep. I started pushing again when I got bored: the faster you go, the sooner the race will be over. Q. Jean, you were behind Barrichello for more than 40 laps today. Could you have been much quicker than him? JA: I think I was quicker than him, but it was really impossible to overtake him without taking a risk. He had already been nice to me by being 5th on the first lap, so I was waiting for the pit stops. But the first one wasn't really quick and I started losing position. Q. Were you under a lot of pressure from Heinz Harald in the closing stages? JA: Yes, of course. But I had already spent so much time behind slower cars that I knew it would be impossible for him to overtake. I just tried not to make any mistakes or to destroy my front tyres which has been our problem here this weekend and everything finished well. But I was still driving flat out. Q. You must be encouraged with this unexpected 2nd place. JA: It is very good, especially because at the moment the team has been giving up a little. And it is nice to remind everybody that the championship is not finished. Q. Heinz, what happened at the first corner? HHF: It was pretty tight. I had a better start than Jacques and I was alongside him and a nose ahead. But I was on the outside line and I didn't want to take any risks going into that corner, and take somebody off, especially Jacques. I had a lot of pressure around me and I tried to be tight on the inside but I touched with my front wheel his rear wheel, but only side by side, and in that maneouver my hand banged into the dashboard and I switched the ignition off. I didn't know what had happened. I was slowing down and was looking quickly at my instruments (to see) what happened. I saw the ignition was switched off and I managed to switch it on again. Then I had to wait for a second until everything was running, and then found myself in 15th place. Q. Was there damage to your car from the collision? HHF: No, the wheels were side by side. It was alright. I was only worried that my inboard camera would be broken. Q. How did Gerhard overtook you? HHF: It was a manoeuvre with Eddie Irvine. I was on the inside of Eddie and I was hoping and praying to God that he wouldn't make any mistake at that moment. He tried to close the door and put me on the dirt because there was one car a lap before putting a lot of dirt there and I had no grip at all. I had to go straight. At least I had Eddie next to me. I was opening the gap, but then Gerhard went to the inside. Q. Later on you overtook Diniz. HHF: Yes. I think they were on one stop. And they were in a little bit of trouble on the uphill, and I could manage to overtake him through the slow speed chicane.

Zar niko nije gledao odlicnu 250cc trku u Indoneziji?

Nigel to Return? If Nigel Mansell comes roaring out of retirement in 1998, Jim McGee would be the man responsible. McGee, general manager for Patrick Racing, is among the most respected strategists inside Indy competition. He was making the calls for Newman/Haas when Mansell was a winner there, and it's on his recommendation that Patrick try to sign him now. "We're going over to see him at the end of October," McGee said Saturday. "I've stayed in contact with Nigel and he's really interested in doing something now." Mansell, the 1992 Formula One world champion and 1993 Indy car champion, suggested a test drive in a Patrick Reynard Ford-Cosworth as a first step. McGee is prepared to book Portland International Raceway "and a short oval as well" in order for the Englishman to satisfy his appetite. "His ability is not in question, he just wants to see if the fire is still there," McGee said. "I think it is. I know it is." McGee acknowledges the criticism of Mansell throwing in the towel in his second year with Newman-Haas. Mansell's Lola was incapable of handling consistently through a race in 1994, although Mansell was able to take the pole three times and start among the top three on another eight occasions. "Nigel lost interest as the car had its problems and talk started up of a return to Formula One," McGee said. "But the situation with this team would be very good for him. Mr. Patrick is the type of guy Nigel would really be able to communicate with. You know, Nigel requires a lot of love and care, and he'd get it here." The question of affording Mansell's rates could block his return. Patrick is gaining Pennzoil as a primary sponsor for Scott Pruett's car, while Brahma, the Brazilian beer company, moves its money to Tasman Motorsport and driver Tony Kanaan. Firestone remains an important backer for Patrick, but Mansell could command $6 million or so. "Nigel is not an inexpensive commodity," McGee said. "But he brings a lot to the table, internationally, in places like Brazil and Australia, so that opens some possibilities." While Patrick captured two poles and a single race with Pruett this year, there's a sense Mansell would raise the game. "Nigel's long suit was he could drive with a more delicate touch than anyone," McGee said. "He can sense signals from a car other drivers wouldn't get." TROOP MOVEMENTS No other switches in driver/team alignments could rival that of a Mansell return, but Dario Franchitti's likely move to Team Green could produce sensational results. Adrian Fernandez will hook up with either Forsythe Racing or Walker Racing, as those teams move to two-car operations, while Steve Horne's Tasman Motorsport goes all-Brazilian with Lights champion Tony Kanaan joining Andre Ribeiro under the Brahma banner. Robby Gordon appears to have found a home with Hogan Racing, having given Carl Hogan his best finish of the year, eighth, in Sunday's Marlboro 500. Franchitti ran strong for Hogan, but crashed frequently before burning his bridges with manager Craig Pollock steering him away from Hogan's uncertainty. Parker Johnstone appears homeless after showing so little speed with Team Kool Green, but remains a favorite of Honda, which could secure him a spot in a backup car. It might even be a Green car, if Kool decides to up the ante in its final year of displaying its brand on racing cars. If all else fails, the amiable Johnstone could have a future as a television commentator. --------------------------------------------- (C)1997 SpeedCenter Internet Publishing, Inc. ---------------------------------------------

Phillip Island - October 4, 1997 Four times World Champion Mick Doohan (Repsol Honda) continued his domination of his home Grand Prix - and of the 1997 season - by claiming his 50th pole position, his 12th in a row. But the favourite to win the Australian GP broke another record today - with his first crash of the year. Doohan slipped off after being forced to take to the grass when an overtaking attempt went wrong in the final practice session. He was not hurt and his bike was hardly damaged, and he resumed almost at once. Team-mate Alex Criville was second-fastest by just over eight tenths of a second, with Takuma Aoki (V-twin) third and last weekend's winner Tadayuki Okada fourth it was an all-Repsol front row for the last race of the year. Yamahas occupied the next two positions, with Norifumi Abe continuing his good weekend on the Team Rainey machine to lead the second row from Luca Cadalora. Then came Doriano Romboni (IP Aprilia V-twin) and Carlos Checa (MoviStar Honda) - the whole second row covered by a quarter of a second. Alex Barros (Honda V-twin) led the third row from the similarly mounted Regis Laconi, with a pair of Lucky Strike Suzukis alongside. The first was ridden by team regular Daryl Beattie, the second by 500-class first-timer Yukio Kagayama, who usually races a 250cc Suzuki in Japan. 250cc - MAX SNEAKS IN The hyper-tense 250cc championship came one step closer to resolution in the closing minutes of the final practice session. Firstly Tetsuya Harada (Aprilia), one of three candidates for the crown had a heavy crash. Flicked over the high side on the fast Turn One, he was removed by ambulance, and though he had no serious injuries and may be passed fit to race, he is unlikely to produce a full-strength performance. Seconds later, points leader Max Biaggi (Marlboro Aprilia) put in a flyer to vault into pole position. Until then the position had been firmly occupied by Ralf Waldmann (Marlboro Honda), with an advantage of almost three-quarters of a second. Waldie ended up second, with Harada third and Stefano Perugini (Nastro Azzurro Aprilia) pushing through in the closing stages to claim his first-ever front row starting position in his first 250-class year. The second row was led by Olivier Jacque (Chesterfield Honda), with a remarkable performance putting an Australian one-race rider alongside in sixth position. He was Troy Bayliss, who had never ridden a racing two-stroke before, but modestly put his success down only to home-track knowledge. 125cc - SAKATA TAKES LAST POLE Former champion Kazuto Sakata (UGT Aprilia) claimed the last pole of the year by less than a tenth of a second from Youichi Ui (Kurz Yamaha), yesterday's fastest rider. New World Champion Valentino Rossi (Nastro Azzurro Aprilia) moved into third in the closing minutes, ahead of championship runner-up Noboru Ueda (Pileri Honda). This was bad news for Australian hero Garry McCoy (Marlboro Aprilia), who moved up to fourth and the front row momentarily in the closing minutes, only to be pushed back to fifth, leading the second row, by Rossi. Jorge Martinez (Airtel Aprilia) is alongside, the veteran multi-champion in his last GP in a career spanning almost 20 years. There were several fallers in spite of better conditions today, including Manfred Geissler, Mirko Giansanti and Josef Sarda. None was seriously injured.

Doohan Tumbles To Give Criville Second Win Of The Year Phillip Island - October 5, 1997 Spanish come-back man Alex Criville completed his successful return from injury with victory in today's Australian GP, round 27 laps of the 4.448km Phillip Island circuit. The Repsol Honda rider fended off a persistent team-mate Takuma Aoki, riding a V-twin Honda, to cross the line more than two seconds ahead. But victory came at the expense of home hero Mick Doohan. Doohan had already won his fourth consecutive World Title, and qualified his Repsol Honda on pole position. He was building on an already substantial lead with 11 laps remaining when he fell at the high-speed first corner. He blamed running too fast over the bumps, and could count himself lucky to escape without injury from his first race crash of a season in which he has been completely dominant. Norick Abe (Rainey Yamaha) was third, after a fast start that saw him lead the first half-lap, before Doohan pushed firmly past. Then came a huge group, which had number nine bikes swopping back and forth as they disputed fourth place. It was led across the line by Tadayuki Okada (Repsol Honda), from V-twin privateer Regis Laconi, Sete Gibernau (Rainey Yamaha) and Yukio Kagayama, who was having his first-ever 500 GP on the Lucky Strike Suzuki. Alex Barros's V-twin Honda was on his tail, then Peter Goddard (Lucky Strike Suzuki), Carlos Checa (MoviStar Honda) and Doriano Romboni (V-Twin IP Aprilia). Less than three seconds covered all eight riders - the ninth, Nobuatsu Aoki (FCC Honda) crashed out with two laps remaining. Luca Cadalora (Red Bull Yamaha) retired with mechanical trouble after a strong start. Factory Suzuki rider Daryl Beattie did not start, after coming down with influenza on race morning. Doohan's first no-score of the year did not affect his huge overall victory or his total of 340 points. Okada made sure of second on 197, with Nobu Aoki third on 179. Alex Criville was fourth on 172, and Takuma Aoki took fifth away from Cadalora, 134 points to 129. Nobu Aoki won the Rookie of the Year prize from his brother Takuma, 179 points to 134; Alex Barros comfortable won the IRTA Cup for top privateer. 250CC: MAX MAKES IT FOUR IN A ROW Italian Marlboro Honda rider Max Biaggi claimed his fourth World Championship in a row today. Max, who sensationally switched from Aprilia to Honda after his first three wins, rode carefully to second place behind Ralf Waldmann's Marlboro Honda - but it was enough for him to claim a two-points margin over the German race-winner. The other title contender, Tetsuya Harada (Aprilia), rode to a brave fifth in the race after crashing heavily in practice yesterday. He was third overall. With the two Honda riders pulling clear up front, the excitement came from a fearsome six-bike battle for third, raging almost from start to finish. It was won by Olivier Jacque (Chesterfield Honda), with top privateer Takeshi Tsujimura (FCC Honda) next, then Harada, Aussie sensation Troy Bayliss (Molenaar Suzuki), and Stefano Perugini (Nastro Azzurro Aprilia). Tohru Ukawa was eighth after leading this group frequently, only to run his Benetton Honda onto the grass and lose touch with only two laps left. Bayliss's performance had the Australian crowd in ecstasy. It was not only the Superbike rider's first GP, but his first-ever ride on a racing two-stroke, and he fought with the cream of the 250 class with no fear or favour. His debut result of sixth equalled the best performance of the Suzuki this year. Biaggi finished a classic year with 250 points, and Waldmann on 248. Harada has 235, then Jacque secured fourth on 201 points, with Ukawa fifth on 173. Haruchika Aoki (Matteoni Honda) was eighth overall, but won the Rookie of the 'Year classification ahead of Stefano Perugini; Tsujimura was seventh overall and won the IRTA cup for privateers ahead of Jeremy McWilliams. 125cc - SWEET REVENGE FOR NOBBIE Noboru Ueda (Pileri Honda) got his revenge on World Champion Valentino Rossi in the last race today, surging ahead of a close pack for his fourth win of the season as the Italian rider's Nastro Azzurro Aprilia faltered at the mid-point of the 23-lap race. Ueda came through from a mediocre start to lead for the first time o lap 11, and broke the lap record with two laps to go to break narrowly free of a gang which had earlier numbered six. At the finish, only three remained, finishing with pole qualifier Kazuto Sakata (UGT Aprilia) ahead of Tomomi Manako (UGT Honda) and Roberto Locatelli (Axo Honda), the last-named losing a rostrum finish only over the line. Gianluigi Scalvini (Axo Honda) was fifth, after fading from this group, with the troubled Rossi hanging on to sixth place, ahead of Lucio Cecchinello (Spidi Honda). Masaki Tokudome (Docshop Aprilia) led the next group home, ahead of Australian star Garry McCoy (Marlboro Aprilia). Rossi ended up with 321 points to second-placed Ueda's 238. Manako (190) held on to third from Sakata (179); Tokudome passed Jorge Martinez (Airtel Aprilia) by one point, 120 to 119. It was veteran former multi-champion Martinez's last race. Roberto Locatelli was Rookie of the year; Frenchman Fred Petit, who did not finish today, won the privateers' IRTA Cup by two points from Scalvini.

Flash Interviews Takuma AOKI: "The race was bad for me because I did not know that Mick had crashed until it was over. I thought I was racing for second place with Criville and if I had known it was for victory I would have made more effort and pushed harder. I am angry with myself because I made a tactical mistake. I am also angry with the spectator who threw an apple, with a firework inside it, on to the rostrum. It deafened me." Luca CADALORA: "I just don't know what happened. I got a good start and I felt we good do well today but then I just didn't have any grip from the front. I don't know why but then I started losing places and I went off the track. There was nothing I could do so I pulled in. It's a shame to finish the season like that. This year we've had some podiums and lost a couple of podiums with problems. We've had some good times but we could have done better." Alex CRIVILLE: "I made a bad start and lost two seconds on the first lap, so it was always going to be hard to catch Mick. But I just kept going as fast as I could because in racing you never know what is going to happen. It was a close race with Takuma, and we touched machines more than once. When I got the signal that Mick was out I knew that I was in with a good chance to win and three laps to go I pushed hard to try and make a brake, even though the bike was sliding. I had no trouble with the bike and if I had got a quick start I think I could have raced with Mick. To finish the season like this is better than I dared to expect." Mick DOOHAN: "I just can't believe it. I was trying to conserve the tyres. Although I was pushing quite hard, I was taking it easy on the tyres as I went into turn one, I was on my own with a seven second lead or something like that. But when I hit the bumps the front just folded. I fought hard to get it back because I thought it was possible to do so. I was controlling the throttle to stop the bike sliding, and I was using the same rubber as I used last week. No, I simply can't believe that I crashed." Tetsuya HARADA: "My left foot was tapped up before the race, and without this it would have been very difficult for me to ride. At the start of the race there was only a little pain from the injury I received in the crash yesterday, but it got worse as the race wore on. Because I use my left foot to change , it became harder and harder to keep up the pace. Now that the season is over, the tension of the recent months has eased and I feel I can relax a little. I have been concentrating very hard with the bike at every race because it was built for a rider with a completely different riding style to mine. Now we have lots of data from every track we have raced on this year, and that is going to be very important as we prepare for next season. I would like to have won the championship for the Aprilia team, but next season things will be much different. Now my girlfriend Meyuki and I will go back to Japan for a short holiday before I start testing again in November. The good thing will be that right from the start we will know what to do with the bike: we have to work on the frame and in order to get some more acceleration" Tadayuki OKADA: "By my standards I did not make a good start, and for the first four laps I did not feel confident on the bike. Because of this I lost touch with the leaders and got involved in a fifth place battle with eight other riders. There was a lot of bumping and barging going on, so it was impossible to get in a good lap. Towards the end I managed to pull up to the front of the group and, after Mick had crashed, get fourth place. I am not happy with the result today, but I am satisfied with finishing second in the championship and with the season as a whole." Stefano PERUGINI: "I am pleased with my race today because I stayed up with the leaders quite easily. It was satisfying to be able to overtake other riders and although I was only seventh, I was close to the third finisher and not way back seconds behind them on my own. The bike was performing well today, I think the result proved that. I could have pushed harder, but I didn't want to take any risks. The team and I have done a good job this weekend and I wanted to make sure that I finished the race. Besides that Harada was in front of me and I didn't want to put him into any difficulties by attempting to overtake him. Now I want to prove, next season, that I am one of the fastest riders in the 250 class." Doriano ROMBONI: "I am very disappointed with the result. I made a good race and the bike was going well right up to the final corner when the engine broke. At the time I was fighting for 5th place with Lanconi and then I was left to cruise over the line in 11th place." Valentino ROSSI: "I am disappointed to leave the 125 class with this result. I wanted to celebrate in my normal way by winning or ending with a podium position. Both of these were possible today because the machine setting was okay and the gearbox and engine were perfect. But on the 14th lap the engine seized momentarily and I lost too much time to be in with chance of getting back with the leaders. This has been a fantastic year for me, I have learnt a lot and won a lot. Now I hope that I will be just as successful in the 250cc grands prix next year." Tohru UKAWA: "I was quite confident at the beginning of the race and I thought I could finish third, on the podium. My shoulder did not trouble me and the bike was almost perfect. But one lap before the end of the race I tried to brake very hard in the hairpin, I passed Jacque but Harada closed the door and I touched him a little bit. Then I went straight in the grass but hopefully I could come back on the track and finish eight. This season, I did better than last year. I've been five times on the podium, finished twice in second place and three times in third. I hope that next year I will be on the podium at every race and also that I will be able to fight for the tittle. "

On je trenutno šampion u evropskoj Formuli Opel.

The Quotes ------------- * M. Schumacher: "It is a long time since I had so much satisfaction from a win, mainly because it brings me closer to the Championship. We knew Jacques would try and make my life difficult and try to get other cars to pass me. Initially I made a good start but then I had too much wheelspin. Jacques did brake a bit harder than usual a few times and I nearly touched him. Before the race, Eddie told me he might try and pass me at that point and it was quite funny when it happened. It was a very good manoeuvre. After the pitstops, when Jacques came out of the pits he moved right across but I managed to dive inside him. Thanks to Eddie we were in a good situation and he took care when he let me pass. It is thanks to him that I have this victory. I have always said he is a great driver and a great team-mate. Hill made life very difficult for me. There were a lot of blue flags and he should have let me through. In Jerez the situation is open. Whoever is in front will be the Champion. I am looking forward to it. I hope to perform in the same way and win the Championship." * Irvine: "We knew Jacques would try and hold Michael up and I had ideas how to pass him and had spoken to Michael about it before the race. Then the opportunity to pass presented itself and although Jacques tried to block me, I went round the outside of him. Then I was off and it was a great feeling to be leading by such a distance. Then I just waited for the phone call. I had to wait a long time but then I was told to let Michael through and try and slow Villeneuve. It was not very difficult to do as I have three years of F 3000 experience here. It all went to plan, except Heinz getting past at the pit stop. He moved over onto the racing line, which you should not do when you came out of the pits. On my last set of tyres I kept locking the front brakes but I did not have a problem to keep Hakkinen behind me. I just had to make sure I was fast onto the straight." * Villeneuve: "The start went well for and then it was just a question of racing knowing that there is a good chance the result will be void in a week's time -- but I just got on with it. I was racing against Michael and my only objective was to try and slow him but I was surprised that nobody tried to overtake him. Then we lost the battle in the pitstops. We came out a little ahead of him but he was on the track and his momentum carried him past me. Then, of course, Irvine let him go by and into the lead and the rest of the race was very difficult and very frustrating for me." * Herbert: "I made probably my worst start of the season, with too much wheelspin, but I was fortunate not to lose any places. In the early stages the balance of the car was not very good and I was struggling, but it got better on my second and third set of tyres. This was a very tough race, where I just had to concentrate on being as steady and consistent as possible. I couldn't really run close with anyone, and though I could catch people through the esses, I was losing a lot down the straights. Right at the end I was pushing as hard as I could after Villeneuve and Alesi, but I just couldn't get close enough to challenge either of them. It's a shame that I lost that momentum at the start, and then lost more during my in lap for my second stop, but the best thing was our strategy, which was absolutely right." * Katayama: "During this morning's warm-up I noticed that the engine on my spare car was faster than on my race car. We decided not to change engines and unfortunately it didn't last the distance. I'm very disappointed because I really wanted to finish my last F1 race in front of my fans." * Marques: "I had a really good start, moving up the grid from 20th to 16th on my first lap. Unfortunately I had problems with my gearbox and I lost second gear after my first pit-stop. Even though I drove carefully, the problem got gradually worse until I was forced to stop." * Morbidelli: "I'm really disappointed that I had to watch this race on the television, following advice from the doctors. I feel much better seeing it from the cockpit of a race car!" * R. Schumacher: "The car ran well for me today. In the first part of the race I was held up in traffic, and in the second stint I was stuck behind Hill for a while until I was able to overtake him in the chicane. The third stint was the best as I had a clear run, and you can see from my lap times what the car was capable of. I was lucky not to spin at the end because there was oil on the track." * Berger: "This was a frustrating race. I made the wrong choice of tyres and had to go for a three-stop strategy. But even that did not help as I did not manage to get a good performance out of the tyres and I was left behind. It was a gamble which unfortunately did not work!" * Alesi: "It was a difficult race. We went for a brave three-stop strategy which turned out to be very close to the two-stops, so it's hard to say if we really got an advantage from it. The car was going reasonably, except for a slight understeer. I got stuck behind Villeneuve and, although I was quicker, I could not overtake him. At least, we got one point today and there is still one more race - so, I have another chance to get my third place in the drivers' championship." * Verstappen: "I made a good start, passing Nakano and Katayama before the first corner, and the car handled well throughout the race. Mika and I were really closely matched all day, but I was disappointed to lose time at the second pit stops. New tyres were worth over two seconds a lap here and when they brought Mika's stop forward I felt that it should have been me to come in early as I was ahead on the track. In the end, however, it didn't matter." * Salo: "Jos and I were able to keep each other on the pace all afternoon, which is good for the concentration, but it is frustrating when you push yourself as hard as you can for most of the race and then don't make it to the finish. Just before braking for the Triangle chicane, I felt the engine let go. There was no warning at all and I just drove off the track." * Fisichella: "This was a difficult one. The car did not feel very well balanced at the start and the grip was not very good. Although the handling improved during the race and my lap times became faster, I was not able to find enough speed to make up any places. At least I finished the race, although it would have been better to have won more points in the championship." * Barrichello: "The wind was quite strong today and it just caught me." * Frentzen: "I ran very little downforce, and in the beginning it didn't work out behind the other guys. I had a bit of understeer. My target was to keep on going. We would have appreciated being in front of Michael taking any points away. Jacques was really fair to Michael. Many people said Villeneuve would go into the race to push out Michael, but that was not his target."

Konferencija za štampu... Questioner: Congratulations, Michael, on your fifth victory of the season. This must have been one of your most satisfying races ever! Micheal Schumacher: Yes, you can believe that! Questioner: What were the team tactics at the start? Micheal Schumacher: Obviously the plan was to see what Villeneuve was planning. And at the beginning he wanted to hold everyone up and to make life difficult, particularly for me. He probably knows he's not going to score any points from this race, so he wanted to make sure I would lose as many points as he could do. That meant slowing me down and arranging for other cars to get in front of me. It didn't work in the end, because Eddie took an opportunity to pass us both in a very good manoeuvre. So then we threw away the first plan and switched to another. Questioner: You got a big advantage in the first pit stop when you returned to the track just in front of Jacques. To what extent were you able to plan that? Micheal Schumacher: Yes, it's true I got an advantage there. For a while we thought [the Williams drivers] would be going for one stop only. It was then a surprise [when they went for two] and it was quite critical, because Jacques came across the road [in front of me] and tried to close the door. I am not sure whether it was the correct thing to do, to come across the road and try to push someone. I was able to correct my own situation and took him on the inside, but it could have been very dangerous. Questioner: When you and Eddie changed positions, it seemed that Eddie slowed down deliberately. Were you talking to the pits at that stage? Micheal Schumacher: We had obviously talked through the various procedures, and one reason that Eddie was able to disappear was that Villeneuve was still slowing me down. Once I had got past Villeneuve too, I talked it through with the team how he would then let me by, to allow me to get a victory and take maximum points. Questioner: Did you enjoy being able to plan this sort of thing? We don't see much teamwork in F1 these days. Micheal Schumacher: That's true! But I have said many times that Eddie is a great driver and a fine team mate. I really have to thank him for this victory. And if any question marks have been raised about his future, I think they should be forgotten now. Questioner: Heinz Harald, well done on finishing second. You seemed to be much faster in the second part of the race than in the first. Was there a particular reason for that? Heinz-Harald Frentzen: Basically I tried to be quick on the straights, so I was running very little downforce. At the beginning when I was behind the other guys that didn't work out. I had a bit of understeer from the beginning, too, and my plan was just to keep on going. But I also had quite a lot of fuel on board and it was difficult to keep up with the other guys. Questioner: Did you have team orders? Were you kept aware of Jacques' position? Heinz-Harald Frentzen: I was trying to be as quick as possible, and to get the best possible result. For sure we would have appreciated being in front of Michael and being able to take any points away from him. But I have to say that Jacques behaved very fairly towards Michael. Many people believed that Jacques was going into this race with the intention of pushing Michael off, but I don't think that was his target at all. Questioner: Towards the end, when you were catching up with Michael, did you believe you had any chance of passing him? Heinz-Harald Frentzen: Catching up with someone on this track is one thing, but overtaking is a completely different challenge. I think it would have been a bit difficult, even though I knew that Michael wouldn't be taking too many risks. Questioner: Eddie, this has been an enjoyable race for you today. Did it go as you expected? Eddie Irvine: We had an idea that Jacques would be trying to hold up Jacques. I also had a few ideas about how to pass him and it went pretty much to plan. Then I started to pull away and I was just waiting for the phone call. As soon as Michael had got past Jacques in the pit stop it was obvious that I would have to slow down and allow Michael to build up a gap on Villeneuve. It was disappointing [to lose the lead], but if Michael hadn't been challenging for the championship I would not have been in that position. Questioner: It looked exciting on the TV when you and Michael swapped positions. Was that all planned? Eddie Irvine: We had it sort of planned where we were going to do it and it worked out well. Apart from Heinz getting past me at the pit stop, the whole race worked out pretty well. Questioner: You seemed a bit slower at the end, which allowed Mika Hakkinen to close up. Was there a reason for that? Eddie Irvine: For some reason the car was understeering very badly on the last set of tyres. I was also locking the front brakes, so I had obviously lost a lot of front end grip on that set. Nothing seemed to be working right and I was having to move the brake balance more and more to the rear. So I just concentrated on being fast through the last corner and getting on to the straight as quickly as possible. There was no point in pushing any harder because Hakkinen was quicker than me everywhere. I just had to make sure that I was as quick as possible through the important sections of the circuit.

I četvrto, o ponašanju Hila, stvarno nemam reči. PS. > * Villeneuve: "... I was racing against Michael and my only objective was > to try and slow him but I was surprised that nobody tried to overtake > him." > Eddie Irvine: It was disappointing [to lose the lead], but if Michael > hadn't been challenging for the championship I would not have been in that > position.

> I cetvrto, o ponasanju Hila, stvarno nemam reci.

Toliko. He, he, nemoj da se nerviraÜ ;) > Al' neka.
