F1: Australian GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Mika, on a fantastic drive to win the Australian GP. It didn't go quite as you expected, though ... MH: No, it didn't go like we planned. The overall result was what I wanted it to be, but during the race there was some confusion which forced me to make an extra stop. It was purely a misunderstanding in the radio communication which cost me the lead at that time. Q. Later you caught up with David and right at the end it looked as though David allowed you to overtake. What happened there? MH: I just want to say thank you to David. It was very fair racing and excellent team work. I am not just saying that because I won, but because we have an excellent relationship with David. What he did today was remarkable. Looking back through history I haven't seen many drivers who would have done this. Q. The two of you virtually lapped the entire field today. Why is the McLaren so good this year? MH: (laughs) Well, this is something for us both to answer. But there is probably one very simple reason, which is that we have the people, the package and the sponsors who can work together in all the areas. This is the result. It is only with that combination that you can achieve something like this ... including of course having excellent drivers like me and David ... Q. David, everyone was surprised to see you let Mika go through. Was this something that you had discussed beforehand? DC: Since the Jerez situation last October, Mika and I have learned a lot during the winter and got a lot closer. In this situation we knew we had to be very careful about reliability, because there were a lot of question marks over brakes and other issues at this type of track. So we had an agreement here that whoever got to the first corner first would not be challenged by the other person, because that was a vital moment in the race. I was pretty confident with the agreement and that I would be able to beat Mika to the first corner, but unfortunately he made a good start. Then when the team explained to me what had happened during his pit stop I had some time to think about it. It came clear to me and I felt it would be in keeping with the agreement for us to change places. Q. Heinz-Harald, in spite of finishing third you must still be shocked by the speed of the guys sitting next to you... HHF:Actually I wasn't looking around me very much, and I couldn't see how far these guys were ahead of me. I didn't realise how much quicker they were until they lapped me. I was doing my own race: I was concerned about my brakes, just like last year, and I had to take a very easy pace at the beginning. I just wanted to avoid getting into the same situation as last year when I got to within two laps of the finish and didn't see the chequered flag. I just concentrated on being quick at the end, when I did my quickest lap time and was able to outbrake my competitors. My strategy was to save my tyres and brakes. Q. Do you think that you and Goodyear will be able to challenge McLaren and Bridgestone in the next races? HHF:It is going to be a big challenge for us to catch up. McLaren has a good car and a good package, but we are convinced that we will make a good step forward in time for Brazil and Argentina, at least in the tyres, and we will try to improve the car as well. Q. Mika, you must now be looking forward to Brazil! MH: Yes ... certainly. But at the moment we are feeling happy and we just intend to relax tonight. Before Brazil we will go testing, concentrating again on the development of the engine and the car. I am really looking forward to Brazil.

--------------------------------------------- French Grand Prix Reinstated PARIS (March 19, 1998) -- French radio has reported that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has given the green light for the French Grand Prix to take place this season. The race, scheduled for June 28 at Magny Cours, was missing from the schedule released Dec. 14 after an FIA meeting in Monaco. It was deleted because of a television rights feud. It becomes the eighth race on a 17-event schedule. ---------------------------------------------- Skinuto sa: www.iRACE.com pecapop

auto-moto.756 vpoznanovic,
F1: Brazilian GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Mika, on your third consecutive GP victory and the second of the year. Does it feel any different to have won here? MH: No, it is just as good. Obviously this Brazilian circuit is tougher than Melbourne, because of the bumps and because the cars are sliding more here. It is harder work than in Melbourne. Q. You made a good start and rapidly pulled out a useful lead. Were you at all worried about David challenging you? MH: No, not too much, because it is quite difficult here to follow anybody really closely. That is why I was not too worried: I knew he would not be able to get too close, because he would have lost downforce. Q. You made one pit stop only, and you made it late. Was that as you had planned? MH: That was planned and it worked really well. The thing I'm most happy about is the start. It really worked out well. It is very difficult here because it is uphill on the startline, so the car tends roll backwards. But it worked out really well, and that probably gave me the result that I had today. Q. This is bumpy, tiring track. You said yesterday that it was one of your favourites. Is it still? MH: It certainly is a very challenging circuit, and very hard to drive. You have to find the optimum line to get the best possible lap time. I really like it a lot. Q. You won by 1.1 seconds. Did you ease up at the end? MH: The rain started spitting a little bit at the end of the race ... the last three laps. I was really taking it easy and not using any kerbs or anything because I was just worried because you can lose the back end very quickly. I had it all under control. Q. David, another second place. Are you pleased with this result? DC: Yes, although obviously I would have been happier to have finished first. But Mika has had an edge all weekend, and under the circumstances six points is quite good. Q. You are legendary for fast starts, but you didn't manage to get a particularly good one today ... DC: No, I didn't get away quite as well as I would have liked. Drivers always have a book full of excuses, and my excuse today is that it is a hill start here, and using the foot clutch instead of the hand clutch meant that I had to brake and use the throttle at the same time with my right foot. Maybe that is more difficult than using the hand clutch, like Mika does. I am hoping to get it right in Argentina. Q. There were a couple of occasions when you got close to Mika. Did you hope to be able to challenge him at any stage? DC: I didn't expect to have any chances less he had a mechanical problem or made a mistake. At best I would only be able to run at the same pace as him, but I was mostly a little bit slower. In the last section I was having a lot of traction difficulties out of the last corner. It would have taken an incident for me to have got past him. Q. Michael, after losing an engine in Australia you must be pleased to have some points on the board here ... MS: Yes. Third place was the most we could have hoped for, and we achieved that. There was a good competition between me and Eddie at the beginning, then with Wurz and Frentzen. I am very pleased, because this is the first time we have run the new engine. It ran quite well: it is a great compliment to the team. Q. What went wrong at your second pit stop? MS: Yes, the problem was that the engine stopped for some reason, I don't know why. Usually we have an idle strategy to prevent this, but it died. The mechanics did a very good job to get it running again so quickly. Q. Was there a possible one stop strategy for Ferrari and the Goodyear tyres? MS: Sure, it would have been an option. But we chose to make two stops. Q. You were almost a lap behind the McLarens here. Do you have any chance of being able to catch up some of the gap in Argentina? MS: Yes, definitely. Argentina is sure to offer some closer competition. How much closer, though, I don't know. But we expect to make one step forward there, and then another in time for Imola. Q. Mika, how will it be to go to Argentina with a maximum 20 points in the bag? MH: It will give me great confidence. And although Buenos Aires is an extremely difficult track, I am really looking forward to going there. I expect the cars to be very close in terms of lap times, which will make things tough. But it is still nice to have these points in my pocket.

auto-moto.777 vpoznanovic,
F1: Argentinian GP winners' press conference Q. Congratulations, Michael, on your first victory of the season. Your start was a disappointment, though: what went wrong? MS: We just had too much wheelspin. I thought I had a good way of approaching my start, but it proved to be not that good. I don't know why and I shall be studying it: maybe it was similar to the problem I had in Brazil. But maybe it was my fault, I don't know yet. Q. Your suspension was slightly damaged in the clash of wheels with David Coulthard. What effect did the damage have on the handling of your Ferrari? MS: There was quite a lot of understeer in right hand corners which made it feel loose and difficult to handle. But it didn't feel too bad. And no, it didn't feel any better in left handers ... Q. With just over ten laps to go it started to rain. How difficult did that make it for you? MS: At one stage, particularly at the first corner, the rain was coming down quite heavily. It was also raining at at the second, third and fifth corners, and a little bit at the final corner, too. That is where it became just slippery enough for me to lose control. Q. Was it to your advantage that the temperature today was comparatively low? MS: I don't think it was either a help, or a disadvantage. Our tyre temperatures were quite low all weekend, in fact we felt the compound was too hard. Maybe it was even softer than what Bridgestone brought, but it was still too hard for us. As we expected, the new Goodyear was very consistent all through the race. But Goodyear already has a new 'family' of compounds on the way which is even more consistent. Q. How well do you expect the Ferrari to perform at Imola? MS: It is a different type of circuit and I am sure we will improve the car. After Brazil, which was very bad for us, the tyre situation is now closer to what we would normally expect. But I cannot say yet what Imola will be like from the point of view of the tyres. I believe we will have an opportunity to do a good job and to be up there again. Q. Mika, has Ferrari got you worried? MH: I have to admit that the performance they had this weekend was excellent ... particularly compared to me! David was also performing extremely well, so it is unfortunate what happened to him in the race. If I had chosen a two stop strategy I would have been able to push harder, and if I had been able to go quicker at the time of Michael's second pit stop I suppose I might have been able to stay ahead of him, although I believe he would still have overtaken me, probably quite easily. Considering that I had to start from third place on the grid, the one stop strategy was the right choice, and I don't think two stops would have made a big difference in the end. Q. Around the time of your second pit stop you suddenly lost about four seconds in one lap. Were you in trouble? MH: Only with the traffic, there was a lot of it in front of me and I was not able to overtake it comfortably. That is where I lost a lot of time. Four laps from the end, when it started raining again and the circuit got really slippery in certain places, I was in a situation where I knew I wouldn't be able to catch Michael by driving any faster. I didn't want to take any risks at all, so I just backed off. Q. But Michael didn't seem to back off then, did he? MH: I am sure he did some! (Schumacher nods in agreement) Q. Eddie, it was around that point in the race when you and Alexander Wurz touched wheels. Was that because of the rain? EI: Yes, when he got past me there were only a few spots of rain on my visor and I didn't think there was going to be any problem. Then I braked, immediately locked up my wheels and ran wide which allowed him to slip through. But then it rained a little more heavily and things evened themselves out again because he spun and I was able to re pass. At the end it was just a matter of stay6ing on the track and not pushing too hard. I still had this [leg brace which had come loose] between my legs. It was coming away from the bottom of the cockpit and I had to keep knocking it back into position with my knee. It had already caused me an incident at the hairpin, where I lost five seconds because it was just about to come undone and fall into the foot well among the pedals. I had to bang it with my knee, which caused me to miss my braking point and slide wide. Q. Wurz passed you easily, it seemed. Was there any contact between you? EI: Yes, he was a lot faster than me and he caught me very quickly. Coming into the chicane at first I half closed the door, which allowed him to get his nose half inside me. He touched my rear, but it didn't seem to have caused any damage to either car, so we set off again, back into battle. Q. Michael, in two weeks you'll be back in Europe for the San Marino GP, on Ferrari's home ground at Imola. What are your thoughts about that? MS: We have an extensive test programme next week, with a lot of work still to do. I am hoping this will put us another step up, if possible on the same level as this Finnish guy sitting next to me! I am pretty optimistic about this, because I know we can go faster. After that, from circuit to circuit it will depend on the tyres, and there will probably be variations when one or another is faster. It should make for an exciting championship.

Formula 1 - Najnovije vijesti i tračevi... Mecachrome under pressure Williams and Benetton are increasing the pressure on Mecachrome to develop the ex-Renault V10 engine. Both teams have expressed concern at the lack of development. Williams believes that some of its problems come from being unable to put enough downforce on the car, as it would hamper straightline speed too much. X-Wings are gone! The FIA has banned X-wings on safety grounds with immediate effect. It said that there was a risk of them flying off and hitting drivers, and that they hampered the safety of fuel stops. As a safety rule the ban comes in without teams approval and with immediate effect New Mugen The new Mugen-Honda engine is now ahead of schedule and may well be ready for the Canadian Grand Prix. Barnard to stay John Barnard has denied stories that he is to leave Arrows for Prost. Jenkins under pressure? Stories are circulating that Stewart designer Alan Jenkins is under pressure for the lack of competitiveness of the F1 car, and may be used as a scapegoat. Bar no engine? BARs engine deal is rumoured to be in trouble. Stories have recently suggested an Audi deal, but there is reported to be unwillingness from Audi to be involved in a brand new team. The team is now understood to be waiting on Benettons future engine deal to pick up a Mecachrome unit. Rosset safe Tyrrell are playing down stories that Ricardo Rosset's position in the team is under review. It was BARs employment of him in place of Verstappen which lead to Ken Tyrrell quitting the team early. Customer Hondas in 2000 It is emerging that as well as a factory Honda team there may well also be a customer deal to compare the team with. This expected to be Jordan, whose deal runs out at the end of 1999. Verstappen for Benetton test Jos Verstappen is to test the Benetton-Playlife this week after failing to come to terms with Stewart. Improved McLaren ahead McLaren is to test a range of new aerodynamic and chassis tweaks to improve its current performance. Lights tested At Imola the in-car flag-lights were tested for the first time. It is reported that they suffered from interference. Magnussen faces axe After his performace so far this year, stories continue to do the rounds that Stewart is ready to get rid of Jan Magnussen. The team is reported to be in discussions with Jos Verstappen Jordan makes progress Damon Hill was upbeat after last weekends race, as he felt the Jordan team had made major progress in the last race. Despite an early pit stop for damage, Hill was 7th before retiring. Audi threatens Ford VW-Audi have increased their bid for Rolls Royce AND Cosworth. Ford have responded saying that if the deal comes of, they will pull the engine in house as the engine is theirs, not Cosworths. An insider said "The trucks would be backed up to the door and we would be loaded up". Audi to replace Ford One of the more fancifull rumours doing the rounds is that Audi is set to replace Ford at Stewart. Mercedes says "no" Mercedes have put water on a story of their own creating, by saying that it is not going to set up a Merc Jr team (like in GTs and ITC). Ferrari bids to keep "team" Luca di Montezemolo has said that he is in discussions with Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher to keep them at the Ferrari team into the next millenium. Jacques Villeneuve also went on record saying that he was not in meaningful discussions with the team. Williams admits changes The Williams team have admitted that they are to make fundamental changes to the rear of this years FW20. These revolve around a rear end based on last years car, which co-incidentally was designed by Adrian Newey.... Engine stability BCE is aiming to keep the current 3l engine formula "open ended" to cut costs, as well as further restrictions on exotic materials and regenerative power in the engines. New Arrows Engine The Arrows concern were pleased with progress with their new F1 engine, which added 20-30 bhp to the top end of the unit. Tuero fastest Either due to a glitch or a major change in form, the Minardi of Tuero was credited with the fastest start/finish line speed during the race. Even the team said it was likely to be an error.... Arrows linked to Embassy Rumours are abound that Arrows are set to be sponsored by Embassy next season.

Jordan Spanish GP race press release The Benson and Hedges Jordan Formula One team said that the Spanish Grand Prix proved to be disappointing for them. The team's hopes that the car and drivers in race trim would earn them their first points of the 1998 season were dashed with Damon Hill retiring from the race on the lap 46 and Ralf Schumacher slipping down five places at the start. DAMON HILL - CHASSIS 03 - Did not finish - engine failure on lap 46. "It was quite definitely the engine - it went bang right in front of the pits. I made a reasonable start but then was pushed out by Villeneuve who squeezed his way through, so by the first corner I had lost the few places I had made up at the start. Then I was having a good race with Johnny (Herbert) who was a bit faster, but I was pushing and trying to keep the pressure on him. Then things went wrong when I lost eight seconds running wide on the lap before my pit stop. After the stop, I was going down to turn one and Frentzen came out of the pits and pushed me off the track! That was annoying because I was up there possibly fighting for points and he was well behind, but in the end of course, it did not matter." RALF SCHUMACHER - CHASSIS 04 - 11th "I must say that the car felt really very good and when I was alone on the circuit I was able to put in some good times. The tyres also felt ok, but to be honest we do need a little more power to help us in overtaking. I had thought that it would have been easier to overtake as the car felt really good and I was often in the right position to overtake, especially after the last turn, but I was not able to. Basically the car is good and with a little more improvement in all areas and we could be up there. I did not think the start itself was too bad, although I did have wheel spin and lost a few positions. Where I really lost places was in the first two corners where there was a lot of confusion and I had to go onto the grass. But I am conscious now that when the cars are so close together I would prefer to avoid the situation by going off onto the grass rather than staying on. I felt that if I had tried to stay on the track in this situation today I would not have finished the first lap." EDDIE JORDAN, TEAM OWNER "There is absolutely nothing I want to say about today's race, except 'let's forget it and move on to Monaco'".

Minardi Spanish GP race press release The Minardi Formula One team said that they feel quite confident, as Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix was the first race of the 1998 season where both their cars saw the chequered flag. Shinji Nakano, driving chassis 03, finished in 14th position Nakano said after Sunday's race that he struggled with oversteer the whole day, starting at Sunday morning's warm-up session, and for this reason, he couldn't push more. "I want to thank the guys of the Team because they did a very good job during the two pit-stop that were scheduled for me," he added. Teammate Esteban Tuero, driving chassis 04, finished in 15th position Tuero afterwards said that he finished his second Grand Prix of the season on Sunday, and that it is very important for him, mostly because he feel in good physical condition. "Unfortunately, in the second part of the race I had a 10 seconds penalty for a driving infringement," he said. "In fact, on 21st lap, when I went into the box for my first pit-stop, I think I obstructed Frentzen who was behind me." Gian Carlo Minardi said: "For the first time from the beginning of the Championship, both our cars saw the chequered flag, and this makes us feel quite good, even if, for sure, we could have done something more. "Anyway, except the 10 second stop, that further penalized Tuero, the result was not far from what we were expecting." Ford's race support engineer Trevor Knowles said: "We are very pleased that both our engines - with new specification - finished the race. In fact we had no problem at all during the race with them."

Arrows Spanish GP race press release The Danka Zepter Arrows Formula One team said that the Spanish Grand Prix proved to be disappointing for them with both cars stopping on the track at the same time with engine failures. At the start of the race, Pedro Diniz's car stalled with a battery problem and had to be attended to in the pitlane, where he was able to join the race one lap down. Although there were no indications over the weekend on engine unreliability, the unexpected failures will be investigated at the team's headquarters. Pedro Diniz retired from Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix on lap 21 and said afterwards that he had a problem with his battery at the start of the race, which needed to be exchanged in the pitlane. "When I joined the race I was one lap down already, but the balance of the car felt good and I hoped to make up some places," he said. "I noticed Mika's car in front of me stopping with smoke coming out of the engine, I suppose it was then that my engine decided to stop as well. "All I can say now is that I am looking forward to our test next week, which will hopefully help us find more reliability in the future." Teammate Mika Salo retired from Sunday's race on lap 22 and said afterwards that he had a good start to the race and was able to run in 14th place until his untimely exit due to an engine failure. "It's a real shame that this should happen to both of our cars, especially because the improvements to the gearbox were evident over the weekend," Salo said. "However, like Pedro, I also look forward to our extensive test schedule next week and hope that we will have better luck next time."

Benetton Playlife press release Betton new comer, Alexander Wurz impressed everyone again on Sunday by finishing fourth in Spanish grand prix. He is now fifth in the championship. Things did not go well for the team's other driver Giancarlo Fisichella. He retired after an incident with Ferrari's Eddie Irvine forced him into the gravel trap. Giancarlo Fisichella: "I am very disappointed. I had already passed Irvine with most of the car and he should have let me through, but he kept on going and it resulted in a collision. At the beginning of the race the same thing occurred, but I was on the inside and I pulled back to let Eddie through, as I knew it would end in an accident. Apart from the collision, after a few laps, the car became difficult to drive with both understeer and oversteer, but I was in a strong position for third place." Alexander Wurz: "I had some difficulty in pushing with the car so I couldn't really battle with Michael. I am delighted with fourth place as it now puts me fifth in the World Championship. In testing next week the team will work some more on suspension and aerodynamics and then in a race or two we can really expect to challenge the Ferraris. Looking ahead to Monaco, whilst I don't know the circuit very well, it is my home and I do like street circuits. I plan to get some points there." David Richards (Chief Officer): "This weekend had a lot to offer. It didn't quite meet our expectations, but we are reasonably satisfied. Fisichella has every reason to feel unhappy about the situation with Irvine and Alex drove a very solid race into fourth place."

Sauber Spanish GP race press release Sauber's Jean Alesi finished Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in 10th position, whle teammate Johnny Herbert finished in 7th position. Alesi, driving chassis C17-01, set a best lap time of 1:26.698s in Sunday's race and said afterwards that the incident with Williams' Heinz-Harald Frentzen ruined his race. "He tried to come round the outside and we touched, but when you are in the pack like that everyone is trying everything that they can," Alesi explained. "The car was understeering as it did in qualifying, though the fuel load made it slightly better, and after that first lap delay and then my refuelling problem on the first pit stop, it became very tough for me," he said. Teammate Johnny Herbert, driving chassis C17-04, managed a best lap time of 1:25.630s and said afterwards that he lost the chance of fifth place right at the start of the race, and said that he is bitterly disappointed about it. "I was always one of the best at starts last year, but despite practicing a lot this season I still haven't got them right," he said. "It just hasn't clicked. "Besides the start, my race wasn't bad. I was pleased with the way I kept the tyres at their best, although I couldn't really lean on them when the fuel load was at its lowest," Herbert explained. "I was worried they wouldn't stand much treatment at that stage. "The other thing was that I just couldn't slipstream anyone. I could get close to Jacques, but there was no chance to pass," he said. "The only time I did get right with him, in the third corner at the start, he just accelerated away. "I also had an exhaust problem 10 or so laps into the race, though it didn't really affect the performance. "The team did a great job on the pit stops, and the car was reliable, but it all came down to the start," Herbert added. "I'm the most disappointed man on the team today." Sauber's team boss Peter Sauber said: "Unfortunately Johnny couldn't make best use of his excellent grid position at the start and lost a possible two points even before the first corner. After that, as we have seen already this season, he was bottled up behind World Champion Jacques Villeneuve and was unable to pass him despite an inspired drive. "For Jean it was difficult to make anything from his grid position," Sauber said. "After the collision with Frentzen on the first lap he tried to move up the field, and was doing good lap times. "But at the first pit stop there was a problem with the refuelling rig so that insufficient fuel went into the tank," Sauber added. "This obliged us to call him in prematurely for his second stop and after that he, like Johnny, was stuck hopelessly behind a slower car."

Ferrari Spanish GP race press release Ferrari's Michael Schumacher finished Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in third position, while teammate Eddie Irvine retired after a collision with Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella. The team's sporting director Jean Todt said after Sunday's race that they knew from the start that third place would be the most they could do unless those in front hit trouble and that is what happened. "The championship is still open, but along with our technical partners we must improve our performance," Todt said. "I feel sorry for Irvine who could have finished fourth. "Once again we have proved the reliability of our cars," he said. "The team did a great job in the pits, helping our cars to move up the order. "Looking at the results it is evident that four of the top six used one make of tyre and two the other make," Todt added. "Of those two, only Michael was not lapped." Schumacher afterwards said that he made a bad start as he got too much wheelspin and could not recover the situation. "I lost two places, but thanks to the team doing a fantastic job I moved up to third after the first pit stop," he said. "Maybe the pit lane speed limiter was not working properly and I saw my speed go over the limit for a moment," Schumacher said. "I came in for the penalty and was fourth behind Wurz. "I pushed hard to close the gap to him and again the team called me at just the right moment and that enabled me to get past Wurz. I don't think I could have passed him on the track. "Third was the best we could do today, but I think it will be closer in Monaco," the German said. "We have a big development program coming and now we must continue to work, work, work. Some of the next few races should suit us better than this one." Teammate Eddie Irvine said that he made a very good start. "I have gone back to my old starting technique and it seems to work," he said. "As for the accident, I do not want to blame anyone, but I will say it was not my fault. After the pit stop I had a lot of fuel on board as we had planned a long second stint and Fisichella came out of the last corner very well and came alongside me," Irvine explained. "We braked at the same time and he turned in on me. "In these situations there is nowhere to go," he added. "It was a great shame as I was having a really good race."

Tyrrell Spanish GP race press release Tyrrell's Toranosuke Takagi had an excellent start to the Spanish Grand Prix when the Japanese driver climbed from 21st to 15th position in the first lap. The Tyrrell Formula One team decided to adopt a two-stop strategy for fuel and tyres in Sunday's 65-lap race, and said that they were particularly impressed with Takagi's first stop, when he kept the Sauber of Jean Alesi and Ralf Schumacher's Jordan at bay. The team said that they are impressed with the car's performance as Williams' driver, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, found he didn't have the necessary pace to overtake the Tyrrell-Ford on the track. Takagi finished Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in 13th position and set a best lap time of 1:28.066s. Following the race, Takagi said that he think it helped to be racing on a circuit that he know well from testing, but said that he enjoyed himself on Sunday. "I made a good start and got by several cars on the first lap," he said. "Once I settled down, I found I was able to run at the pace I wanted to and still maintain my position. The car seemed particularly quick on the straights and that really helped. "I was surprised, for instance, that Frentzen's Williams was behind me for most of the second stint and just didn't have the performance to overtake. "The team also did a great job with both pit stops. The second one, in particular, was very fast. All in all, I feel it was a good day. "Now I am looking forward to the challenge of Monaco in two weeks," Takagi added. Tyrrell's managing director Dr Harvey Postlethwaite said afterwards that Takagi continued his education on Sunday with a gritty race fighting for position in good company. "His pit stops were exemplary and he showed good consistency in his race pace," he said. "The difficult tyre situation and high number of finishers gives scant reward in terms of placing for what was an excellent drive," Postlethwaite added.

McLaren Spanish GP race press release The West McLaren Mercedes team managed to complete the Spanish Grand Prix in a one-two finishing position. This is the team's third one-two finish so far for the 1998 season. Mika Hakkinen, driving chassis MP 4-13 04, won the Spanish Grand Prix in a time of 1h33: 37.621s and a best lap time of 1:24.275s. Hakkinen afterwards said that it was a great race. "Starting from pole and leading the majority of the race was a fantastic feeling," he said. "I pushed hard in the early part of the race and then towards the end I backed off a bit," he said. "Today wouldn't have been possible without the team doing a perfect job and I would like to thank them all." Teammate David Coulthard, driving chassis MP4-13 03, finished second in Sunday's race, 9.439s behind Hakkinen. Coulthard's fastest lap time during Sunday Spanish Grand Prix was a 1:24.778s. Colthard afterwards said: "Mika was really at one with his car this weekend and I wasn't able to keep pace with him, so congratulations to Mika. "I had a really difficult time in the first part of the race, this improved on subsequent sets of tyres, but I wasn't in a position to challenge him," Coulthard said. "All weekend I focused on getting the balance right for this circuit but didn't quite achieve it. "Monaco is a totally different track and I am looking forward to that new challenge," the Scot added. McLaren team chief Ron Dennis said that above all, he is extremely happy for everybody who works within the companies that support them and especially for the people at McLaren and Mercedes-Benz. "The team did a great job over the weekend. The drivers had the equipment to do the job and this was the result of the efforts of everyone within the group," he said. "A great weekend and I am looking forward to Monte Carlo." Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug said that Sunday's victory is a great 1-2 victory and their best team achievement so far. "Congratulations to the whole team especially Mika and David - they have demonstrated perfection at race speed," he said.

Sunday's post race press conference Question: Congratulations, Mika, on your third victory of the season. After only ten laps of the race you already had an advantage of almost ten seconds. How hard were you pushing then? Mika Hakkinen: With a lead like that you might imagine that it is easy, but it never is. You have to make sure that you are concentrating hard, you have to be careful overtaking and although it is enjoyable to be passing other drivers it is also demanding because the situation and the timing are not always exactly ideal." At the beginning I was pushing quite hard. I guess there is always a little room for improvement in your lap time during a race, especially when you are leading, but certainly there was no point in taking any risks at that early stage and damaging your tyres, because you could easily destroy the rest of the run. But there was maybe half a tenth left. Question: Both of you seemed to make good pit stops, but David closed up on you quite dramatically after the second stops. Did you have any problems then? Mika Hakkinen: I now realise that David's pit stops were very good and he got close to me. But the way I was coming into the pits was to make sure I didn't take any risks, and the difference between us fell to four seconds after the second stop, so maybe I was taking it a bit too easy. Question: David, congratulations on another six points for second place. Was Mika simply too quick for you today? David Coulthard: Obviously, yes! I couldn't keep up with him at the start. I had a really difficult time on my first set of tyres and although I got more comfortable on the next two sets Mika was really at one with his car this weekend. I wasn't able to keep pace, so congratulations to him. Question: Did you feel at any stage that you might have been able to catch him and pass? David Coulthard: You always have to push, and I pushed as hard as I could through the whole race because 1) you never know what the strategy is of the people behind you, and 2) if anything were to have happened to Mika, in traffic or at a pit stop, then there was always a chance of me being able to sneak through. I tried hard but I just wasn't quick enough this weekend. Question: Michael, you obviously had to fight even for third place. It would appear to have been a difficult day for you and for Ferrari ... Michael Schumacher: Yes, it all began at the start, which didn't work out at all and where I lost two places. Luckily, after the first pit stop I regained them. But at the same time I collected a ten-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. I don't know why, but for some reason the limiter wouldn't engage, and that meant I had to come in for an extra pit stop. Luckily the crew did a great job and they managed to get me back into the race at exact the right moment, just in front of Wurz, which enabled me to recover my third position. Question: If you had not got back into the race ahead of Wurz, do you think you would have been able to take him? Michael Schumacher: I was even having difficulty overtaking Minardis today, so I don't know what it would have taken to pass Wurz, to be honest! In the early stages of the race I was behind Fisichella and there was no way to pass anyone. So I guess that passing Wurz would have been impossible.
