Subject: 425DXNEWS: Recent Elevated Solar Flux Readings
To fellow Propagation nerds, like myself:
My commentary....
"These recent elevated levels of Solar Flux (SF) values of 100+, I believe
signals the finale of Cycle 22. This recent activity has occurred at the low
latitudes. So, its one last gasp of end of cycle activity. When the solar
active areas grow away from the Sun's equatorial area and spread out farther
and farther from the center of the solar disk into the north and southern
hemispheres respectively, then our closest star, our Sun, will signal the
begining of Solar Cycle 23. But until then, enjoy what we had! It was nice
to have SF levels we experienced back in 1994. It was nice to have these
higher SF levels during thew CQ WW CW Contest. These levels over SF=100+ were
a joy and cause for some excitement to us all. Why not. It been a long
drought!
But, stay tuned! What are your views?

Subject: 425DXNEWS: US Islands NJ Activations
I have reviewd with John WD8MGQ some of the Islands designations in
the New Jersey area. Several of them have not yet been activated. I
will try to visit most of these Islands during this week between the
hours of 1500Z - 1900Z but cannot pinpoint exact time or day.
The first day will include all of the Islands associated with the
Atlantic City resort area. While Brigantine and Absecon Islands have
already been activated I will visit them in addition to new
activations for Kiahs, Whirlpool, Great and Pork Islands.
I have also identified the airport area south of Great Island to be a
seperate Island from Absecon Island. I will ask John for a NJ
identification for this island also.
These islands will be on the air either Monday or Tuesday as my
schedule permits. I will have business on Great Island for the
upcoming few days.
There are 3 additional new activations of Island further south along
the NJ shore which I hope to activate later in the week.
Please note the timeframe as there will be at least 8 new activations
during this week from the NJ shore area.
Following activation and confirmation of NJ Island numbers weekend
lengthy activations will be done between now and the end of the year.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: HS50A "Koh Chang" First Time Operation - Update
IOTA FIRST TIME OPERATION FROM GULF OF THAILAND NORTH EAST
GROUP - HS50A
WHEN: It is now highly probable that the operation will start earlier than
planned. If all goes well with the weather etc, some operators could be QRV
by 1100Z on Wednesday 11th December 1996. However the main party will be
active by 0500z on the 12th December and will continue until Sunday 15th
December..
WHERE. Koh Chang is Thailand's second biggest Island, located at 102 deg
22' East, 12 deg 00' North. It is 5km from the coast of Thailand at its
nearest point. It is 300km South East of Bangkok, 45km South West of the
city of Trat in South East Thailand, and 45km West of the Cambodian border.
The DX Pedition will be located on the West side of the Island. It is
approximately 2 hours by boat from the mainland. The island is 70% covered
by virgin forest and mountains reaching 744 metres high. The population is
approximately 5000 people.
WHO The DX Pedition is being organised by Chamlong HS1AAM on behalf of the
Radio Amateur Society of Thailand (RAST) to celebrate the 50th year of reign
of His Majesty King Bumipol of Thailand (HS1A). The special call sign HS50A
will be used. Chamlong can be reached on +66 2 275 7288, and Fax +66 2 278 =
5664.
The operator list has now grown and in addition to: HS1AAM, HS1CDX, HS2NS,
HS2FDX, HS7ECI and HS0/SM3DYU, will be E21EJC, E21CJN, HS1EUD, HS2AT,
HS2GUW, HS6CMTand HS0EHF.
International Liaison - Ray 9M2/G3NOM Internet: <tayno@ibm.net> Tel/Fax
+60 3 406 7240.
FREQUENCIES: The usual IOTA frequencies on all bands 1.8 MHz to 30 MHz
excluding WARC bands (these are not normally permitted in Thailand). Modes
to be used: CW, SSB, RTTY, Packet, and possibly Satellite. Note that a
special licence will allow 80 and 160 metre operation (not normally permitted).
QSL MANAGER'S for direct and bureaux routes have been appointed as follows:
For Japan only - JA9IFF (Jim)
For Europe and the Rest of the World - I1JQJ Mauro (subject to his
confirmation).
It is espected that Mauro will set up a "mirror" site on 425 DX Web Site
for QSL checking, and for updates during the expedition. The QSL cards will
depict the First Time Operation in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of
the Reign of His Majesty King Bumipol of Thailand (HS1A).
HARDWARE: At least three transceivers, and two linears will be taken. An 18
metre tower, and rotator will support a Cushcraft A3S 3 element HF beam.
For LF bands, inverted vee dipoles will be used. 80 and 160m operation will
commence around 2300z on Thursday 12th December. It is not clear at this
stage whether mains electricity is available, and if this is not confirmed,
generators will be taken.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: HS50A IOTA "Koh Chang" First Time Operation - UPDATE
1. Everything is going very well with the preparations, and the main party
is already on it's way to the Island. The weather is calm, and dry in the
area. Most members will sail tomorrow morning, Thailand Time, ie 2300z (12
December 1996)
2. Already HS0EHF and HS2AT have landed on the Island, and have confirmed
that suitable electricity supplies are available. Therefore it will not be
necessary to take generators.
3. Unfortunately it was not possible to transport the 18m tower across to
the Island today, and therefore the activity has not started early as was
hoped for. However, arrangements have
been made to transport the tower in the morning with the main party, and it
is expected they will start up during mid-afternoon Thai Time, around 0800z,
and should be ready for registration
around 1100Z as planned.
4. In response to requests from North America E21CJN, HS1EUD, and SM3DYU
will concentrate on CW 7MHz between 1300z and 2000z looking for North
American stations, this band is thought to be the best band for the
purpose. The following periods will be checked for North America on- 14 MHZ
CW 1630z - 1830z, 3.5 MHz CW 1100z - 1200z, 2030z-2330z. Any advice on
times and propagation from North American experts will be welcomed. The
above is based on experience from Thailand, and a study of propagation
computer programs.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: HS50AKoh Chang AS125 - First Time Operation - Progress
The IOTA number AS125 was allocated at 1124z today 12Dec96.
For the next 24 hours, two bands, will be worked simultaneously.
The two running stations have been temporarily set up in the same room,
and there is some mutual interference. Tomorrow one station will be set
up in a separate room.
Only two antennas are available today a 40m inverted vee dipole, and
the A3S beam.
Therefore the combination over the next 24 hours will be either:
7/cw + 14/ssb
or 14/cw + 7/ssb
Tomorrow more equipment and operators will arrive. 80 + 160m
antennas will be erected.
RTTY is going to be used, but details will be given later.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: HS50A IOTA Koh Chang First Time Operation
At the time of writing (0200z on Sunday 15th December 1996) HS50A has just
finished working
North America on 14003 CW, and has moved to 14260 SSB.
The expedition will finish in about 3 hours time ie. 0500z.
The operators apologize for the slow rate of QSOs over the weekend , which
has been due
to problems. Details later.
For information, the QSLs will be released after 1st Febuary 1997, in other
words, it will
qualify for the 1997 IO'TA list.
It is hoped to persuade the operators to return during 1997 to give more
stations a chance
to work this new one.
Thanks for your patience, especially the operators in North America, who
have tried to
get through.

Comments on the TOP #10--->
P5, North Korea: As expected, all Portuguese DX'ers need North Korea for a
New-one on DXCC. The only credited operation from P5 was the demonstration
P5/OH2AM and the following stations are on the LOG:
DU3YL, ES1AR, JA1BK, JA1UQP, JA1SNF, JA2VPO, JA8EAT, JA8GQZ, JF3PEA,
JH1ORA,
JL1GZH, JR2SHA, OH3YI, 7L2STQ.
--- NO CT1s, CT3s or CUs MADE IT INTO THE P5 LOG ---
We remember you that the P5RS7 is not credited for DXCC purposes, indeed
this station wasn't authorized and wasn't even located in North Korean
Territory.
In July 1996 Laci, HA0HW, that is working in the Capital Pyongyang at the
present time, tryed to apply for a Radio-amateur permit but the answer was
negative.
In October 1996 Zorro, JH1AJT, and Jun, JH4RHF, have been in Pyongyang where
they have installed an HAM station and made several lectures about the Hobbie.
As Laci, they didn't had permit to operate (at least with the Radios ON).
VK0/h, Heard Island: Everything has been said about Heard Island !
The big DX'pedition VK0IR will start on the 15th January 1997, and if
all goes well, we expect that Heard will drop and fall off the 20# most wanted.
KH5, Palmyra: There are no rumors about future activities from Palmyra.
All that is known is that the Island has been sold and that the new owners
or either pretend to build Hotels in there or some facilities to keep
Industrial waiste !
VK9W, Willis Island: There are also no rumors about future activities from
Willis. It is known that the Island has a Meteo station and that theres
some staff living there. From May to December 1996 there was a resident
HAM on Willis, VK9WG, but no activity was heard from this station at this
side !
VK0/m, MacQuarie Island: 1996 has seen some activity out from MacQuarie,
Warren, VK0WH, was on tour of duty on the Island during 1996, nevertheless
1200 QSOs in a year time and a deft Radio does not helps lowering this
spot off the Portuguese TOP #10 ! Rumors say that Graeme VK0GW will be active
from VK0m during 1997, lets hope he will be more active than Warren !
ZL9, Auckland & Campbell: Graham ZL9GD has been active from Auckland during
February 1996 and this time he was LAND-BASED.
--- This operation is credited by the DXCC---
There are also some news saying that the same TEAM of the Kermadecs 1996,
ZL8RI, will be active from ZL9 on 1999.
T33, Banaba Island: Since 1994 there is no activity from Banaba (T33CS & T33KK)
and nothing is scheduled for the coming times.
3Y/b, Bouvet Island: News say that both Barry, ZS1FJ, and members of the
"South Sandwich DX Group" plan activities from Bouvet during 1997/1998.
KH5k, Kingman Reef: After the N9NS/KH5K operation in 1993 there has been no
activity from Kingman Reef.
VU4, Andaman & Nicobar: Theres a Radio-amateur active from the Andamans,
Mani VU2JPS, but he is not credited for DXCC purposes.
Jim Smith, VK9NS, has been trying to send Mani new Radios and equipment, but
without success, all gear is stalled at New delhi at the moment.
TOP #11 to TOP #20:
T31---> Yearly (by Xmas) Norbert, T31BB, is active from Kanton Island.
KH9---> Theres no predicted activity in the coming times.
A5---> Be optimistic !!!
3B6---> Barry, ZS1FJ, has planned some activity from Agalega Island.
KH1---> Theres no predicted activity in the coming times.
ZK3---> Nerio, IK4MRH/HS0, has plans to be active from Tokelau from
15 to 22 of March 1997.
KH4---> Our sincere thanks to Bill, NH6D/KH4, and Frank+CADXA, AH0W/AH4, for
helping us lowering Midway from TOP# 1 Most-wanted Country in
Portugal during 1995 to the 17th position on the 1996 survey.
Yes, indeed Midway dropped 17 position on the 1996 list !
FT/z---> FT5ZG will be active from Amsterdam beggining in February 1997.
ZL8---> Theres nothing to add since the activity of ZL8RI in May 1996.
3C0---> Theres no predicted activity in the coming times.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: Email confirmations
Please take note that the US.Island program will accept email confirmations.
This concept will hopefully reduce the costs involved in sending QSL cards
back and forth. It goes without saying of course that if you require cards
for DXCC, IOTA, WAS, or Counties programs, that you should still submit via
snail mail, as they have not yet bought into this system. The following is
the new rule that will be added to the rules & regulations for the
US.Islands program.
***************************
Email confirmations (QSLs) are acceptable for credit towards all US I
Program awards. Email confirmations submitted for credit shall be
identified as such on award submissions. Copies of Email
confirmations submitted for credit shall be available to awards
manager upon request.
****************************
I hope that this will make it easier for stations outside of North America
to join in the program, with out the extra costs of mailing.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: Join the Heard Island Team
WE INVITE ALL TO JOIN THE HEARD EXPEDITION TEAM!
As we began planning this DXpedition several years ago, we always
intended it
to be an event for you, our DX audience. Our objective was to satisfy
your need for contacts and make sure that our operation was enjoyable
for all concerned. In that spirit, we invite you to join the Heard
expedition team on the internet:
----> The Heard reflector is now online!
The Heard expedition's reflector will be the main forum in which you,
our audience, can participate in our expedition. Through the
reflector, you will be able to pass us your feedback. It will be the
focal point for all updates and feedback coming from the expedition
team on the island. And.. our pilot stations will broadcast general
info on the island, the environment, our setup, the team, the
challenges we are encountering, and other information of interest.
In addition, the reflector will cater to free flow discussions between
yourselves and the expedition's pilots. Tips, recommendations,
questions and answers, anything related to the Heard expedition are
proper topics for the Heard reflector!
Due to the limited time and bandwidth available, the expedition
members on the island will not be on the reflector. All information to
and from the island will be channeled through the pilot stations. It
will be the ONLY reflector on which our pilot stations will be engaged
in discussions concerning the operation.
With only a few days to go before the first team leaves for Reunion
Island, we urge you to join the expedition team today. Come on, do it
now, make this YOUR event!
Here's how to do it!
----> Subscribe to the Heard reflector in 2 steps:
1. send an Email to:
heard-request@ve7tcp.ampr.org
put in the body: subscribe
2. Just to make sure that it is YOU who are subscribing, you
will get a
verification
reply, asking for a confirmation. As specified in that
reply,
send an email to:
listserv@ve7tcp.ampr.org
and put in the body the exact key sentence as you found it
in the
reply,
which looks like:
auth cefd73bb subscribe heard your_name <your email
address>
reproduce that sentence EXACTLY as found in the verification
reply.
It is as simple as that! We hope to see you all on the Heard
reflector very
soon!
By the way, gracious thanks to Lyndon, VE7TCP for his technical
support.

Subject: 425DXNEWS: VK0IR Radio Operator's Manual !
Hello,
Just read Peters, ON6TT, Heard Island Expedition Radio Operator's
Manual, 30 pages, HI !
For those that didn't read it yet, this document explains all operating
procedures: pile-ups, splits and mainly a nice and kind way of dealing
with the dreadful breakers, QRM makers and frequency policemen !
It looks like that this time if they call a specific area, call-area or
call-sign (even if it is only 2 letters) it will really be it and not
something completelly diferent. Its great to hear this as some operations
during 1996 got us used to something completelly diferent ! I remember
once a low-power "NQ" was called by one of the DX stations (in split) and
even thought many station heard the DX saying -"NQ 59"-, hundreds of
stations jump on his frequency yelling their calls without giving the
poor fellow a chance to complete his QSO... I can't find any decent words
to define this situation.
On Heard Isl. if everybody goes by Peter's book (I mean document) this
can't happen, but lets see how things will happen at this side, in any
case Iam already praying for bunches of good sense and tolerance and
thats what we all need, HI !
ON6TT Radio Operator's Manual is in the WEB at:
http://www.ccnet.com/~cordell/HI/planning/Czar_radio.html#operating
Its worth reading it, it will surelly help us a lot !
By the way to check if you are OK in the VK0IR LOG the WEB sites are:
http://www.aurumtel.com/heard-log.html
http://heard.eunet.be
--> The operators ask you to look at the site closer to your location.
CUL on the pile-ups.
A nice New-Years to everybody.
