Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com>) Subject: [BitBucket] Companies who bought AEA Hi All Just to clarify another msg on the reflectors, Here are the 2 companies who bought AEA. 1. For AEA antennas and antenna related products, the new company is: Tempo Research Vista, Ca. 619-598-9677 2. For all other AEA type products: Timewave Technology 612-452-5939 E-Mail dsp@timewave.com Website: www.timewave.com The recording at the AEA number sort of garbles the second company info so I had to throw in the narrow filter and offtune a bit. 73, John K1RC -- CQ-Contest on WWW: http://www.contesting.com/_cq-contest/ Administrative requests: cq-contest-REQUEST@contesting.com

From: "JAMES MCEWEN" <mcewenjv@songs.sce.com> Subject: [BitBucket] ARRL Publications Bill Chambers, n0mbw wrote: The ARRL HANDBOOK is one book that you can judge by it's cover. You can bet that the 1997 issue to be the same as the 1977. Someone needs to publish a HANDBOOK with fresh ideas. ********************************************************* I have to agree with Bill about 20%. I do think the handbook has changed a lot, my last copy was 1987, too, and I just bought a 1993 hardbound copy at a used book store for $8.00. FYI I did see a copy of the Handbook on CD offered for sale a few weeks ago by Bill Sabin, W0IYH, for about $10 less then the list price. (rec.radio.swap). It was gone in a heartbeat. Now FLAME ON: I think n0mbw is correct that much of each year is boiler plate that costs the league nothing, they only pay for new chapters. If my understanding is correct they use (where possible) Hams with a good track record as writers to produce new material for the handbook, or revise old chapters. Many of the how-to parts are reprints from QST, so that material is already paid for. Now to the meat of my flame. IMNHO, The ARRL is supposed to encourage HAM Radio. I think they could do that better by selling their pubs at cost to libraries and schools. Even better would be a program encouraged by the league where local Ham Clubs could buy ARRL Pubs at cost specifically for donation to libraries and schools. I also think the Handbook should have been published as a loose leaf format with a big binder. Want to update?, buy a $5.00 update packet with new material, not a $40.00 book that changes with glacial slowness. The cost of a CD Rom is in the computer ready text. All publishing uses computer text anymore. It costs them very little more to produce the CD version of the Handbook, and it is a lot cheaper then the printing costs of the paper version. They are really guilty of price gouging on this one. Flame off. Just my opinion Now what I'd like to see is some CD's with back issues of Ham Radio on them, or a Ham Radio Antenna Compendium 1975-1985. How about that CQ publishing? 73's Jim KA6TPR

Of necessity there are a variety of ways of assessing the talents, skills and abilities of personnel. Much depends on the view of the unit leadership as well as the assigning officer. In general, good units have a thorough knowledge of their personnel and have them listed in appropriate categories. Depending on the depth of a unit, and its likely assignments, personnel may be categorized in these GENERAL areas: Operations, Administration, Management and Technical. Training can be placed in either Operations or Management. Experienced emergency coordinators and radio officers soon become aware of the level of abilities required for specific OPERATIONS assignments of their communications unit participants. Here is one way to consider it, focused around the ICS field application: EOC level 3 (Emergency Operations Center IC level 2 (Incident Command) Staging level 2 (ICS Staging or marshalling area) Aides level 1 (Formerly called "Shadows". They who accompany the person to whom assigned, such as the Incident Commander, Operations Chief, etc.) NCS level 3 (net control station) The abilities required for the Aide ("Shadow") operator are the most demanding because the physical exposure to hazards of the incident by literally accompanying the person everywhere he/she goes. For Amateur Radio Service licensees, it helps to expand your expectations of where you will be assigned. If you expect to "only operate your own equipment or only on Amateur frequencies" you may be missing out on some of the most rewarding opportunities you will ever face. (Automatic Packet Reporting System) What is GPS (Global Positioning System) Where am I? Where are you? Where is the Hurricane? What is the weather like? Where are the emergency vehicles? APRS is a system used for tracking people, weather, objects, weather balloons, and many other aspects of Amateur Radio. APRS was developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, and was first introduced to the Amateur Radio community at the ARRL Computer Networking Conference in 1992 in New Jersey. Over the last couple of years, APRS usage has grown and expended all across the country, and many new features have been added to this system. Keith Sproul, WU2Z, introduced the Macintosh version of APRS at the 1994 Dayton Hamfest, and released the Macintosh version of the APRS software at the 1994 ARRL Digital Communications Conference in Minnesota. This goal of this Special Interest Group is to create a forum for people interested in this type of activity so that they can ask questions and compare notes and exchanged ideas. We will discuss things pertaining to APRS itself, GPS, GPS units applications of this type of technology, automatic weather reporting, uses of APRS in public events such as bike-a-thones, and uses of APRS in emergencies. Suitable topics include: - New SS chipsets and modem products, and their applicability to the amateur service - Performance reports on existing products (e.g., Part 15 WLAN devices) - Relative merits of direct sequence, frequency hopping and hybrid approaches in amateur SS applications - Use of CDMA and other multiple access techniques to build packet radio LANs/MANs - Dealing with shared allocations and interference in the UHF and higher amateur bands - Proposals for development projects in amateur packet SS - Sources of SS information on the Internet and elsewhere: books, articles, web pages, FAQ files, etc The TAPR SS SIG is unmoderated. We would like to keep it that way, to encourage the open exchange of ideas and minimize the turnaround time. This will only be possible if the participants exercise some restraint. Seems some smaller of the resellers do discount the books and CDROMs. I am also in contact with a book collector who is sending me a list of his duplicates. AA6EE Duane Heise at his callbook address was recommended as a source of new books. He may discount some materials ~18%. Pro or con, ARRL or other political body, it is unlikely that posting here will help with local problems as most folks here are technically oriented and have strong feeling against reading this sort of political commentary. Not that anyone or any group may not have a valid gripe, but it is likely that posting here will only cause feelings of hostility. From: Pete Thompson <pthompso@taratec.com> Subject: [BitBucket] ARRL Handbook vs Others Hi all, following the discussion on ARRL publications and the handbook in particular, I tend to agree that although the hb contains much static ref material, it comes across as a little 'fuddy-duddy'. I was wondering if anyone has seen recent publications of a similar nature from other countries' ham radio organizations such as RSGB. How do there efforts compare ? Maybe the ARRL could learn something ? My personal belief is that the ARRL could do a much better job of presenting 'state-of-the-art' material such as construction projects that will pave the way towards better band utilization eg get us all onto microwave, high data transmission etc etc cheaply in droves ! From: cape.net@surfergirl.spacey.net (by way of "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com>) Subject: [BitBucket] FWD: Preliminary Design I have come up with a preliminary design of the SS box. I have tried to make it as generic as possible, without including un-necessary details. My idea is to get an idea of the overall design and how the pieces of the puzzle will fit together. I don't won't to lose sight of the forest for the trees, if you know what I mean. \/ | | +---------+ +---------+ +-----------+ | | | | | | |<---- Voice +-----| RF |<-->| SS |<-->| DATA |<>--- Ethernet | Section | | Section | | Interface |<>--- RS-232/RS-422 | | | | | | +---------+ +---------+ +-----------+ Obviously, there is more to the system than this, but it is a start. I feel that with a system such as this, all persons interested in the design can be happy. The only 'grey' area is the interfacing between the SS and DATA Interface sections. How is the data transfer going to handled? I feel that the SS section should have a constant data rate. Only the data rates to and from the DATA Interface section should be varied. The RF section could have all circuitry for translating the data into the RF spectrum and would also contain the interfacing to the antennae. It would also have the IF circuitry, automatic power control interfacing (to the SS section), AGC, and other stuff I can't think of right now. The SS section would do spreading/de-spreading, modulation/demodulation, FEC, PN generation, DS-FH-hybrid control (to RF section?). The DATA Interface would contain rate buffers (FIFOs) for data transfer (for slow mode interfaces such as rs-232), ADCs for voice, interfacing for a front panel (if desired). There is a great deal of planning that would need to go into a project of this magnitude. The above is a starting point. The only thing left to do is decide on how the major blocks are going to connect to each other. Tony KE4ATO

From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] Misc Subjective HF Rig Ramblings (longish) Cc: BitBucket@primenet.com Well I may have to work hard to get my obligatory 3 posts "on the air" today, but I'll try... The Brown Truck (UPS) arrived at the door yesterday with a COD package: the used QRP+ (it was a very good deal). My first impressions in opening the box were: too big, too heavy (for a "QRP" rig). I was merely comparing to my 38s, though as it is my first and only QRP rig (per se). The size/weight are not too unlike those of previous "small" rigs that I have owned and used (and later sold). Of course, the power consumption of the QRP+ (while no Sierra) is more battery friendly than the TS-50 or FT-890 or IC-706. The TS-50 was a fun rig (bought used with matching automatic tuner), but the combination had significant battery demands and counting the size/weight of the tuner, was not that small. Mine had the CW filter. It was later replaced by an FT-890/AT which I loved. The size and weight were not bad since the automatic tuner was built in, but the current demands (even at QRP output) were significant. I posted current measurements on QRP-L a couple years ago around the time of a personal field day effort (~500 CW QSOs @100w). It had the optional CW filter. It would not operate FSK and it was not possible to use the 500Hz filter AFSK. Since I also enjoy operating VHF from remote places, the IC-706 caught my attention since it covers HF, as well as 6m and 2m in a small package, but there is no builtin tuner. This one has BIG current demands for such a small radio (~1.5a RX with backlight on high and ~5.5a to get 5w out). It is still a fun radio, working Es on 6m with a dipole during summer camping trips. The receiver filtering and noise blanker may be weak (even with the CW filter), but for me it is a keeper. I use it with an MFJ-949E tuner on HF. The QRP+ just arrived as I said, but I have tried it on 30m CW with my sloper and worked a submarine (USS Pampanito, NJ6VT) in SF Bay at Fisherman's Wharf. We had a fairly long rag chew and I received a 599 report running the full 5w output. I am quite aware that others have commented on the current consumption of the QRP+, but compared to the "small" rigs above! It is no Sierra, though (I guess). 1.5a on TX compared to the same on RX though? Anyway, this rig seems to have absolutely NO provisions for digital modes on 20m/30m etc that I can tell despite including SSB. It has a nice digital frequency display and builtin keyer. Having both a paddle and key input is something ALL of the above rigs lacked! The variable bandwidth filtering is sweet! From previous comments, I was worried about RX sensitivity and became especially worried when connecting the antenna made no difference! I soon discovered that the 20db attenuator was engaged from shipment! Seems sensitive enough to me, but I have not tried 12m or 10m etc... I still think it is big and heavy for a QRP rig, but for the type of camping I do (not a backpacker) maybe that and the slightly larger power appetite are acceptable. Strictly on the basis of weight, I think the IC-706 is the winner considering all of the capabilities which include VHF (all mode) and FSK (with narrow filtering) and RX coverage 1-200Mhz. With the ~1.5a RX demand, it is a power pig, though. Since I have the '706 if I really need to "talk" to someone, the QRP+ MAY be replaced by the NorCal Sierra in the future. I doubt it will ever be used on SSB by this OB... Don't get me wrong, it seems at first blush a VERY nice rig, but it is not "homebrew." (FT-757 and FT-990DC were/are good rigs, too, but this is already long.) All this must make me a "Low Power 'Appliance' Operator." What do you think? Subject: Re: [BitBucket] HQ Modes ! Date: Fri, 14 Mar 97 16:49:14 -0500 From: Bill Coleman AA4LR <aa4lr@radio.org> As far as I can see, no one has ripped anything off. Martin can apply for patent and copyright protection for his inventions, and he can deliver them as he sees fit. Totally within his rights. However, other than the patent and copyright protections mentioned, there's nothing to stop anyone from analysing the nature of an invention and attempting to produce a workable copy of it. In that case, I don't see how the original inventor is in any position to complain about the quality of the copy. If the goal is to produce interoperable inventions, then public specifications are necessary. Your Windows example is exceedingly poor. Windows is nothing more than a poor copy of the MacOS, and Apple defended that duplication vigorously. Apple lost that battle in court ONLY because of a poorly-worded license agreement between Apple and Microsoft that was established for Windows 1.0 in 1985. Bill Gates doesn't have to worry about someone producing reverse engineered products because his stringent license agreements prohibit it. He's a schrewd business man. There have been cases in amatuer radio where inventions have been ripped off. The most glaring example is the NETROM / TheNET fiasco of a decade ago. Randy Gawtry is a friend and we have spoken about how he might handle the DSP-2232 product going forward. I have encouraged him to think about making the "internals" information of the DSP-2232 available to anyone who wishes to create new firmware and programs for the DSP-2232. I pointed out that Timewave does not have the staff to do such work. I suggested that if outside persons create desirable modifications and improvements he consider a marketing agreement with them. In any event, since Timewave cannot expand the product themselves, I told him that I believe he could sell his remaining stock of DSP-2232's if there was a feeling in the amateur community that there was some way in which the product could receive updates and improvements. I have no idea if anyone wants to try and improve or develop things for the DSP-2232, but if they do I would be willing to assist in making contact with Randy (Timewave) and finding out what can be done. From: "Brian K. Short" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Reply-To: ke7gh@primenet.com Organization: ke7gh Subject: [BitBucket] Timewave and AEA Subject: Timewave and AEA Date: Sun, 16 Mar 1997 13:47:32 GMT From: jdreed@mindspring.com (Joe D. Reed) Organization: MindSpring Enterprises Newsgroups: rec.radio.amateur.digital.misc The following courtsey of Ray W3HUV I attended the Radio City seminar at Moundsview MN today and at 2PM Mr. Randy Gawtry K0CBH, Pres. of Timewave Corp. spoke on the integration of AEA product line into Timewave. This is the flyer: AEA INKS DEALS TO SELL PRODUCT LINES Advanced Electronic Applications (AEA) has closed deals to sell its product lines to two other companies, but the AEA name will live on. Former Chairman Mike Lamb, N7ML, says AEA's line of antennas, antenna analyzers and cable-testing equipment was sold, effective March 7, to Tempo Research of Vista, California. Tempo will handle all technical support, warranty and after-warranty service and plans to produce the products in the antenna, antenna analyzer and cable-testing line that AEA had been producing before it ceased operation late last year. Tempo will continue the AEA name under a separate division. Lamb says he will assume a primary marketing position with the new division. Lamb said he's excited about the prospect of continuing a role with a portion of the AEA product line that he had a particular interest in. He said he hopes to work on new product development as well. Timewave Technology of St. Paul, Minnestoa- already a major name in ham radio gear -- is buying the rights to all other AEA products, including its digital line. But Timewave president Randy Gawtry, K0CBH, asked the amateur community to give the company a few weeks to set up the new product line before calling. "Watch our Web page," he said (its at http://www.timewave.com). Gawtry says a purchase agreement is in place, and Timewave is in the process of making the product line transition from AEA to Timewave and hopes to be manufacturing products soon. Timewave will have the right to use the AEA name for one year (AEA model numbers will be continued, however). Gawtry said Timewave also will handle technical support and warranty and after-warranty service fo the new product line, which includes AEA's DSP-232 multimode TNC, introduced last year. Callers to the former AEA number are now being directed to either Tempo or Timewave, as appropriate. Tempo Research is at 619-598-9677. Timewave's number is 612-452-5939. following de W3HUV personal notes: After snooping around Radio City's retail shop and purchasing an MFJ-1701 6-position Antenna Swtich I carefully navigated the steps to the lower level where I found only 12 people attending the seminar. It was in close quarters so everyone was close the the podium. Here are the notes I jotted down: The first PK232 was manufactured in 1985. They manufactured approximately 75,000 of them. Timewave expects to be 70-80% running with AEA product line in 3 to 4 months. 100% in one year. some history: Timewave had 2 partners. Mike Lamb and "George". George passed away. Mike got a man to run the business. Mike went to Montana and found he couldn't run it remote from there. Mike came back in 95/96s, let the management go, looked at the downturn in the market, decided not to continue. 1995 market drop and Internet competition. Timewave sold around 30,000 DSP's The PK232 was manufactured in Taiwan and the company there folded so manufacturing was brought back to U.S.A. Start up too costly so PK232 discontued. Timewave will support PK232 hardware and software. They will not, however, manufacture anymore PK232's and no new hardware or software upgrades planned. However, they are open to suggestions on how to improve hw and sw. Timewave will repair and upgrade returned PK232's. Timewave/AEA started negotiations Oct/Nov 96 after AEA declared bankruptcy. At a peak AEA had around 25 people. All Timewave product manuals are on the WEB Site and they "may" or "may not" put AEA product line manuals in there too. As an aside Randy said "All Radio Shack product manuals including schematics are on the Radio Shack Web site." Timewave is not a big operation: 8 people now and may grow to 12 people within a year depending on business. Hope this has helped y'all ! 73 Ray W3HUV Cooooooooon Rapids MN

It is NOT a conspiracy to censor, or a plot for political overthrow of the constabulary... But, I recently saw a statistic about how frequently email addresses change and those that SEEM to be cancelled must be deleted. Imagine my situation: for every message on BitBucket, I sometimes get 25 bounce messages (if the chores have been neglected very long). I don't mind though as my automatic "filters" put them aside for me, but eventually I have to deal with them. Anyway, if ANYBODY ever gets "dumped" it is because your address SEEMED to be "dead." I will NOT "dump" folks for other reasons (unless there is an awfully good reason, and it wouldn't be because you have any opinions different than mine, obviously, and I hope you do have some). IF you get dumped, just resubscribe please and possibly send a note about your service. Sometimes there will be "transient failures" that persist and I can't tell. 73, Brian ke7gh@primenet.com

From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] Amateur Book Publishers? First, hate to see folks leave, angry or otherwise and I feel badly if something I do causes it in any way... Moving on, I am interested in compiling a comprehensive list of amateur radio book and/or CDROM publishers, etc. Please share with me and others any publishers you are aware of, especially the obscure and esoteric. I just love the esoteric. Anyway, most of us are aware of the two larger publishers: CQ Publishing and ARRL. Still, supplying the contact information or specific literature recommendations are probably valuable. I think a guy in NH may publish some stuff, too... What I would like is the name of the publisher, mailing address, phone number(s), email address, www site(s), names of books/CDs of interest or description of general categories. At some point, I'll try to put all of the information on WWW and make it available by email (here likely unless I'm crucified). Or someone else can volunteer? "Reviews" or other critical assessments of specific works might be interesting, too? "Newsletters" or other specialized "periodicals" are also of interest (to me at least), e.g. "Pactor News", etc... I suppose URLs of those publishing electronically should be included also, e.g. "Jim's Gazette", etc. It should be International, too, not just U.S. as is usually the case... Why, you ask? Because I like publications relating to amateur radio for my own enjoyment and no doubt the group together can read more than I can alone and I value other's opinions about such things. Everyone can benefit from the collective insights. Post your info to the mailing list (preferably). Protection of the guilty/innocent in the FINAL version may be desirable, or not. Some initial suggestions: CQ Publishing, Tiare, the NH guy, TAPR, etc. We have quite a bit of ARRL Publishing information now, but specific critiques may be of interest? Let's try to stay positive (i.e. saying that 73 Magazine sucks -except for the editorials- etc may not be too helpful to me, but...). How about the really small publishers? Hopefully, it will get much more esoteric than this... Just an idea (ignore if so inclined, obviously). 73, Brian

It's whether or not the amplifier is linear (Class A or AB) or non-linear (Classes C through F). Amplifier classes are discussed in all the usual references. Some amplifiers will time their T/R switching differently, dropping out of transmit immediately on FM, while hanging on a few milliseconds on SSB. But that's not the difference that really matters... Here is my never finished list: 1. Homebrew tuning scope using LCD graphics display and new 320C203 DSP. I have the spectrum display working and it's pretty slick. Wish I could find a source for inexpensive (<$50) graphics LCD modules. 2. Homebrew amp with a pair of 3-500Zs. Actually I'm converting an old homebrew amp from 4-400s to 3-500s, beefing up the power supply, and adding QSK. 3. Also adding QSK to my old SB-200 (not as hard as I thought it would be, and Fair radio has vacuum relays at a pretty good price.) 4. Playing with RITTY (from K6STI) pre-release that provides pactor as well as RTTY using only a Sound Blaster 16 as the modem. Fun software. 5. Finished repairing an old HW-16 and HG-10B (always wanted one when I was a novice and couldn't afford even that...) Been working people on 40m with it. 6. Helping my 10 year old son get ready for his CW test. 7. Waiting for the weather to get warm enough to take the 30m rig mobile on my Gold Wing. 73, Doug Hall, KF4KL

Many amps have a switch that changes the way the amp is biased, and thus its mode of operation. 73, Doug Hall, KF4KL

Any > other neat cutting edge stuff going on in your town? Just wondering. > Need some ideas for the next meeting. Not yet but soon maybe. :-) My personal philosophy is that all packet systems (even the users) should be thought of as cell sites. I don't think the repeater concept necessarily works that well; if you can get a good mountaintop site (or high tower) it should have a full-fledged "hub" system, not just a simple repeater. That way you're not obligated to use it. If you operate the repeater full-duplex, then everybody must talk on one frequency and listen on another, and that precludes them from talking to each other; they'd have to always use the repeater for all traffic. That may work if you think of a star-topology network (multiple stars connected by a backbone), but then if the service areas of the multiple stars overlap, you have to tie up yet more frequencies so that they can be unique. So while full-duplex sounds like an improvement over simplex, I think it may be less efficient than a sort of random-access collective where you can directly reach anyone that you can hear, and if you want to talk to a more remote system you route through other systems in the most direct fashion. Total bandwidth that the collective can move is greater than for a star. It is also easier to get started this way; all you have to do is find a buddy who can get the same equipment as you, start using it, and then others can join in as they get around to it. No repeater to maintain. But whoever has the best location is just liable to end up routing more traffic simply because he can be heard farther and wider. As for hardware 56K seems much more common in the US than other baud rates between. Microwave could be very fast but is a serious hack to pull off. And spread-spectrum may well become most prevalent in a couple years, especially now that the FCC seems to be making it easier for us. -- _______ KB7PWD @ KC7Y.AZ.US.NOAM ecloud@goodnet.com (_ | |_) Shawn T. FM will work on relatively simple (read "cheap") amplifiers which can be compared with Class C vaccuum tube amplifiers used for CW and, in the old days, AM phone. SSB amplifiers must be reasonably linear in their input/output capability in order to avoid excessive distortion of the SSB signal. You are right about the bypass timing, etc. but I have found that linearity is the dividing line between FM and SSB amplifiers. FM amps are usually simply keyed on with the PTT circuit of the mic/transmitter. While SSB amps can be run that way, most usually have a "carrier" detect logic that operates the transfer relays. This circuit must have a sufficiently long time constant that the relays do not change during speech, like a VOX system. BTW, SSB amplifiers work fine with FM signals, but usually not vice versa. -- 73, George W5YR (original, not vanity) Fairview, TX

THE QUADRANTS ARE DEFINED AS: QUADRANT I ' ZERO TO 90 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE QUADRANT II ' 90 DEGREES WEST TO 180 DEGREES LONGITUDE QUADRANT III ' 180 DEGREES TO 90 DEGREES EAST LONGITUDE QUADRANT IV ' 90 DEGREES EAST TO ZERO DEGREES LONGITUDE THE LATITUDE REGIONS ARE DEFINED AS: POLAR ' GREATER THAN 70 DEGREES LATITUDE AURORAL ' 55 TO 70 DEGREES LATITUDE MIDDLE ' 30 TO 55 DEGREES LATITUDE LOW ' 10 TO 30 DEGREES LATITUDE EQUATORIAL ' 0 TO 10 DEGREES LATITUDE ALL COORDINATES REFER TO GEOGRAPHIC LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE. HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS FOR THE PRECEDING SIX HOURS ARE DESCRIBED FOR EACH REGION AND QUADRANT BY A LETTER. THE LETTER DESIGNATORS ARE: N ' NORMAL U ' FAIR OR USABLE W ' POOR OR UNUSABLE THE LETTER N (NORMAL) DESCRIBES CONDITIONS COMPARABLE TO WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED FOR THE LATITUDE, LOCAL TIME, SEASON, STAGE OF THE SOLAR ACTIVITY CYCLE, AND CURRENT GEOMAGNETIC CONDITIONS. THE LETTERS U (FAIR) AND W (POOR) REPRESENT THE DEVIATION FROM NORMAL COMMUNICATION QUALITY. HF PROPAGATION FORECAST CONDITIONS FOR THE NEXT SIX HOURS ARE DEPSCRIBED BY THE FOLLOWING NUMERICAL CODE: 1 ' USELESS 4 ' POOR TO FAIR 7 ' GOOD 2 ' VERY POOR 5 ' FAIR 8 ' VERY GOOD 3 ' POOR 6 ' FAIR TO GOOD 9 ' EXCELLENT THE NUMERICAL DESIGNATOR HAS THE SAME ABSOLUTE MEANING REGARDLESS OF THE BLOCK IN WHICH IT OCCURS. A SIX HOUR FORECAST FOR MAXIMUM USABLE FREQUENCY (MUF) DEVIATIONS IS LISTED AFTER THE OBSERVED AND FORECAST PROPAGATION QUALITY WITHIN EACH GRID BLOCK, IF DEVIATIONS ARE GREATER THAN PLUS OR MINUS 20 PERCENT FROM THE MONTHLY MEAN. THE FORECAST DEVIATIONS APPLY TO SINGLE HOP, 4000 KM PATHS WITH CONTROL POINTS LOCATED WITHIN THE GRID BLOCK. NOTE FOR AWN TRAFFIC: PLUS AND MINUS SIGNS ARE INDICATED BY P AND M, RESPECTIVELY PART 2. A PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY OF GEOMAGNETIC AND IONOSPHERIC CONDITIONS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON PROPAGATION FOR THE PREVIOUS ZULU DAY AND A BRIEF FORECAST OF EXPECTED CONDITIONS FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS IS INCLUDED ON THE PRIMARY REPORT. WHEN PROPAGATION QUALITY HAS BEEN DEGRADED WITHIN THE PAST SIX HOURS OR IS EXPECTED TO BE DEGRADED WITHIN THE NEXT SIX HOURS THIS INFORMATION IS INCLUDED ON THE SECONDARY REPORTS. PART 3: REPORTS OF IONOSPHERIC DISTURBANCES DURING THE PREVIOUS ZULU DAY THAT WERE CAUSED BY SOLAR FLARE ACTIVITY. THE REPORT INCLUDES START/END TIMES AND CONFIRMATION OF DEGRADATION ON HF SYSTEMS, TO INCLUDE THE FREQUENCY RANGES AFFECTED. IN ADDITION, A FORECAST PROBABILITY OF SOLAR FLARE INDUCED SHORT WAVE FADES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE CURRENT ZULU DAY IS PROVIDED USING THE FOLLOWING CONVENTION: NIL ' LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 1 PERCENT CHANCE OF OCCURRENCE SLIGHT ' 2 TO 19 PERCENT CHANCE OF OCCURRENCE MODERATE ' 20 TO 49 PERCENT CHANCE OF OCCURRENCE STRONG ' 50 PERCENT OR GREATER CHANCE OF OCCURRENCE PART 4: CONTAINS THE OBSERVED AND THREE DAY FORECAST FOR 10.7 CM RADIO FLUX AND K AND AP INDICES. THE 10.7 CM SOLAR RADIO FLUX IS USED AS AN INDICATOR OF THE GENERAL LEVEL OF SOLAR ACTIVITY. THE K AND AP INDICES ARE MEASURES OF GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY. THE K INDEX RANGES FROM 0 (VERY QUIET) TO 9 (SEVERELY DISTURBED). K VALUES OF 5 OR GREATER CORRESPOND TO GEOMAGNETIC STORM CONDITIONS THAT CAN RELATE TO POOR PROPAGATION CONDITIONS. THE AP INDEX RANGES FROM 0 TO 400. AN AP OF 30 IS THE THRESHOLD FOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM CONDITIONS. **** Help for majordomo@proton.sel.noaa.gov: This is Brent Chapman's "Majordomo" mailing list manager, version 1.92. From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] Receiving HF? (long question) Living on a small lot in a city with height restrictions, my antennas are limited and especially so for the lower HF amateur bands (160/80m). While 160m DXCC may be out of my current reach, I do enjoy the band on CW during the winter. One of my current goals, however, is the 5BDXCC lacking only completion of 10m and 80m (only 37). On the lower bands (IMHO) DSP (AF/IF) filters are helpful. Still, last winter, my problem was not being heard (running ~1.5kw), but rather hearing on my 55' shortened half-sloper. A receive antenna was employed (160' center fed inv vee) and did have lower noise and provide better copy for many stateside QTHs. The half-sloper did seem to receive better for the far distant states on the east coast (also JA). Many told me that they heard me, but I could not pull them out of the noise. In a series of skeds with N1RJ in ME on 160m, he heard me every night, but I copied him only the third time (he gave me a 589 and I was struggling during fades). The same sloper works on 80m, but generally the inverted vee is used for both tx and rx despite being low. I have modelled the low 160' dipole with ELNEC and most RF goes into outer space. Still, QRO, the problem remains primarily rx (as far as I can tell). For 80m a vertical was suggested, but I lack the area for radials, hence the sloper. Sloper or vertical, many say noise is a more troublesome with vertically polarized antennas especially for those of us who live in urban areas. Recently, it was pointed out that my rig with the RX-ANT IN and OUT jacks can be easily interconnected with a "noise canceller" which is then placed in and out of line by merely pressing the RX-ANT switch. These devices rely on a good "noise antenna" to provide signal which is combined with the "receive antenna" out of phase to cancel noise. Unfortunately, the author of that post was using an antenna better than mine just for the "noise antenna." Anyone have experiences with the JPS ANC-4 (I think) or other devices? Some reported disappointment, but it ALWAYS seemed to be a poor "noise antenna." Anyone have technical, anecdotal, or other performance data under similar circumstances? What is a good noise antenna? What is else practical with poor soil, 35' height limit, and limited space? Obviously, I can't put out a beverage, but some have mentioned the use of small (coiled) loops? Any other ideas? There is likely already sufficient IF/AF DSP filtering. (FT-1000mp both 500hz and both 250hz filters/EDSP and outboard audio DSP) Gotta hear 'em to work 'em! 73, Brian

Other overviews? Well, if you include electronics in general, not just ham-only pubs, there's Electronics Now (Don Lancaster's monthly column will point you to lots of other resources too), Circuit Cellar Ink, Midnight Engineering, EE Times and EDN (the big EE zines, both free if you prove yourself "worthy"). I have subscribed to most of these at one time or another and they all have useful bits that can be applied to ham radio. I also get Popular Communcations, which isn't that useful to me (it's oriented more towards SWLers and CBers but has some cursory ham coverage too). There's Popular Electronics which is a bit more likely than the rest to have ham projects in it, but it usually isn't "meaty" enough for my taste. -- _______ KB7PWD @ KC7Y.AZ.US.NOAM ecloud@goodnet.com

I tried one antenna on 2 different cars, and while the VSWR meter appeared to show the antenna was working correctly (that is, it had a good match)... when I removed the whip from the outside, the VSWR meter still showed a good match! It makes you wonder how much of the energy is reaching the antenna itself! From what I have seen and heard, I wouldn't recommend them for VHF/UHF. I antenna I tried was a thru-the-glass dual bander... from a well known company... John N2KBE

From: SEAB&SHARON LYON <SSLYON@worldnet.att.net> Subject: [BitBucket] HORIZ. LOOP: ONE MAN'S VERSION In response to more queries than I can handle individually, here is my approach to Horizontal Loop construction. VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV For a horizontal loop, make it as big, "round" and high as you can get it. Round is the ideal shape, but even a triangle will work satisfactorily. It won't take any more time to put up than other wires, provides multi- band, omni-directional coverage with favorable take-off angles for DX and domestics. It's also quieter than open-ended wires like dipoles, long wires and zepps. I use use a sling-shot and bottom half of a spin-cast pole, 15 lb. monofiliment and 2oz. sinker to get up a sturdy pull string to pull strong support lines. I go right over the tops of the trees, where the small branches provide a natural spring. If you can, get the line over TWO or three crotches that are strong enough to support the line. That will reduce the stress of downward pull on the first one. Winter is a great time to select ideal branches; -no leaves. Support lines terminate w/2" NYLON clothesline pulleys, thus the whole antenna "floats" in the pulleys, providing distributed stress. Feed it with 450-ohm ladder line or GOOD 300-ohm to your tuner, or as far as you can, then a 4:1 balun to 50-ohm coax to your tuner. You'll need a tether to keep the feed point where you want it and you can use it to pull the ant. around to "steer" lobes. Leave enough slack in supports for for tolerable tension but not a great deal of sag. I loosen it for hi winds. No counter-weights, or complicated suspensions. If/when it breaks, I loosen the support ropes, pull the wire back together and solder it with a Bernz-O-Matic; -it's back up in less than 1/2 hour even if I have to re-shoot a line to re-thread the wire. Home Depot sells the pulleys, and 500' rolls of black (inconspicuous), THHN stranded (flexible), for ~ $20 locally. I also use the black/orange 3/8" "California Truckers Line", (~$55/500') instead of the usual black "parachute" style stuff. The latter doesn't take chafing on branches well. I've got a 1400' hexagon up now and LOVE IT!!! A loop has been a great "Weekender" / vacation ant. too. 72 =s= p.s.
