From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] High(er) Speed Packet? I'm just a basement (Arizona room) experimenter. Recently, there was a new kit-form PI card available and if my check was not lost in the mail at my hotel in Florida, I should receive a partial kit soon. For $60 the PI2 provides 2 interfaces to my computer: 1) low speed interrupt 2) high speed DMA To begin, a G3RUH modem can be connected to the low speed (9k6) port. Later, however, I would like to experiment with a higher speed data link and another ham only a couple miles away (KB7PWD) has also shown interest. I have read a little about the NEW 56k GRAPES modems, but possibly there are some _newer_ alternatives? TAPR is working toward promoting Spread Spectrum and may provide 900Mhz SS equipment (115k) at some time in the future? Can anyone summarize the current status of amateur radio SS? What are the opinions out there regarding experimentation with higher speed data links at the present time? What are the present/future options for the experimenter on a budget? 73, Brian ke7gh@primenet.com

From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] *New* HF Radio Kit You may recall the announcement of the "38 Special" a few weeks ago? Mine (with builtin TiCK keyer and 4w final mods) is *almost* set for testing. The timing seems about right for another QRP project for a different band, but would 40m or 20m be the better choice? Decisions, decisions... Anyway, below is forwarded from QRP-L@Lehigh.Edu as posted today. Check with the referenced sources for additional information. 73, Brian ----- Date: Sun, 23 Feb 1997 19:55:28 -0800 From: svecbrdk@well.com (L.Svec,W.Burdick) Subject: [12902] SST INFO: Kitted by Wilderness, Not NorCal Me again. I apparently caused some extra work for Doug and Jim with that last posting on the SST. (Isn't the Internet great? You can make thousands of mistakes at once! No waiting!) ****** Here's the scoop: Because of the timing of the SST, it WILL NOT be kitted by Doug Hendricks and Jim Cates. Please do not send them any SST questions. Instead, send your questions to me, here at my home e-mail address: svecbrdk@well.com Why? Doug and Jim have worked (if not Frozen) their butts off doing 38-specials, and 40-9ers before that. I asked them if they thought the SST should be kitted by NorCal, and the answer was a worn-out "We'd like to, but...." They deserve a break! In lieu of NorCal, Bob Dyer of Wilderness Radio has taken on the task of kitting the SST. He will take all the orders, too. So, while the SST is a NorCal/QRP-L field test, and will appear in QRPp, it is not a NorCal kit. The club price (see below) is good until May 1st, 1997. By the way, Bob is not new to field-test kit runs: he did all of the band module kits for the original NorCal Sierra. PRICE AND KIT INFO The SST is going to be supplied only as a complete kit -- no partials. It includes a high-quality double-sided and silkscreened PC board; a custom, unfinished .050 aluminum enclosure with hardware; all controls, connectors, knobs, rubber feet, etc.; detailed manual; and all parts for your choice of bands. The club price for each SST is $69. TO GET THIS PRICE, orders must be received by May 1st. All kits ordered at the club price will be shipped after May 1st, probably in late May. After May 1st, the SST will be available as a Wilderness Radio kit for $85. I will be updating the design at that time based on results from the field test. Bob will accept orders beginning now, but none will shipped until May. ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Please enclose $69 per kit ordered before May 1st, and $85 thereafter. 2. For each kit ordered, you must specify the band: 40m, 40m/novice, 30m, or 20m. (Remember, this is a VXO-based transceiver, so the rig does not cover the entire CW band. Approximate coverage is: 40m, 7.032-7.042; 40m/novice: 7.105 - 7.115; 30m, 10.105-10.120; 20m, 14.046-14.064. Other ranges are possible with small modifications.) 3. California residents must add 7.75% sales tax. 4. Shipping charges are extra: $3 U.S., $5 Canada/Mexico, $15 DX (other). This is a per-kit shipping charge. 5. Please make out checks to Wilderness Radio, NOT NORCAL. We'll also need your name, call, address, phone number, e-mail address. 6. Send U.S. funds only (checks drawn on US banks, or an international money order) to: Wilderness Radio, P.O. Box 734 Los Altos, California 94023-0734, USA If you have questions send e-mail to me (Wayne Burdick, N6KR), or call Bob Dyer at (415) 494-3806 (9AM to 6PM Pacific time, M-F). From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] APRS Comments/Summary Below comments were received about APRS. Need to find some time to download and set it up here. I'm mostly interested in the 30m freq and operation under Win95 at this time. Anyone have further specific information? 73, Brian ----- Please, let us all know what you find out. ----- Brian, I have just started with APRS but find it very interesting. I am using APRS77f for my program and it works FB. As to what you can use it for, I am setting up mine to use for making maps of my "First Due" area in the Fire Dept. You set up the aprs for tracking and the drive the roads making maps as you go. It is also used for storm chasers to keep track of each other..basically it is used to keep track of each others location whether or not mobile or stationary. It is a lot of fun. There is a good book available thru the ARRL that explains it and the program. ----- I am just getting started in APRS. Software is available in a number of places for both the Mac and PC. For information and software check out CLARC's web site at www.clarc.org . As I too am new at this I can not give you a lot of details at this time but the sit should help you out. There are links to other APRS site as well. ----- > Anyone here using it regularly? Not yet, the closest users are Spokane and Yakima. > How does one experiment with it? Monitoring is a good way to get started. > Where is the software available? ftp://ftp.tapr.org/tapr/SIG/aprssig/files/dosstuff/APRSdos/ for DOS version, file is named aprs784.zip ftp://ftp.tapr.org/tapr/SIG/aprssig/files/winstuff/WinAPRS/ for win95 or 3.1x with 32bit drivers. File is WAPRS130.ZIP > What are the frequencies on HF? VHF? 10.151 lsb 300baud packet; 145.79 in most areas but can vary. > What sort of things can it be used for? > Any other general information? See the TAPR website http://www.tapr.org for info on it. You can also search the mailing list archives at: http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/taprmailsearch.html A search on Alta Vista will get you lots of info too! ----- There is a considerable amount of APRS activity in San Diego County. The two biggest proponents are Pat Bunsold, WA6MHZ the ARRL Section Manager and Del Radant, N6JZE, the Technical Coordinator and Official Observer Coordinator (ARRL). Both have mobile units in their vehicles using excess stuff from Qualcom (they produce Omnitrack). The national frequency as I understand is 145.790 MHz. I am sure that if you send either Pat or Del a 3.5 disk, they'll send you a copy of the program (which includes an extensive manual which you can print out). Both Pat and Del are good in any call book. As to what it can be used for? I suppose the list is endless but probably the greatest value is being able to look on your screen and find the location of anyone using the system. In an emergency you would know who is the closest to the action and be able to dispatch them. On a lighter note you could put one in your XYL's car and track her as she visits the various malls around town. Hi Hi. Lastly, ARRL has a new publication which pretty well covers APRS and all its facets. I think it's listed in the latest QST and if you don't have a HRO nearby you could call ARRL and order one over the phone. The equipment you need at home you already have I'm sure: A computer, TNC, and a 2 meter radio with directional antenna. I live in north county and the APRS node is in the souther part. I have no difficulty hitting it and my QTH pops on to the map on the screen and I can watch all the other activity as folks who have mobile equipment move around the county and the equipment updates position every five minutes. A real boon to ARES, RACES, and watching your wife spend your money. ----- I thought i would let you know that Civil Air Patrol Uses APRS in Arizona All the time. Our systen runs 24 hrs a day. I have a dedicated Computer for APRS. I have a system in my Pick-up and all of the CAP airplanes have systems in them. We know where our Aircraft are at all times. We have one wx station in Phx. We feal APRS is a great tool for our missions. It is used on the ham side a lot but I do not have enough radios and computers to do that too. ----- > Anyone here using it regularly? > How does one experiment with it? > Where is the software available? > What are the frequencies on HF? How much expense is involved in putting one up on 2 meters? [John D. Hays] Depends on what you want, from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Are all frequencies taken up? As I have heard. [John D. Hays] Depends on where you want to set it up, this is true in most metropolitan areas, though with Sub-Audible Tone and better RF studies more repeaters would be possible in some areas. Some areas have "shared non-protected pairs" for repeaters, a repeater can be put on these frequencies but are not protected. From: "Brian K. Short" <ke7gh@primenet.com> (by way of "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com>) Subject: Pactor-II vs HAL From: Tobias Port <tport@vector.wantree.com.au> I was slightly annoyed when I discovered the official statement in the packet radio network written by Bill Henry, the president of HAL Communications Corp. (manufacturer of the CLOVER system) putting down PACTOR-II, which is a competitive product manufactured by SCS in Germany. Is HAL so concerned about their market share that they need to initiate a "battle" in the amateur radio world and spread such a bunch of accusations? In the last couple of months, several comparisons between CLOVER and PACTOR-II have been published. Whatever the source was, all serious tests showed that PACTOR-II actually performs better. This may appear somewhat embarrassing, but it is the truth. For example, just see the July 96 issue of the QST magazine which includes a comparison from the National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA) in the US. There should be no doubt that these results are unbiased, especially since the authors claim that the findings were used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to determine which protocol could be used in case of an emergency. Another comparison with similar results was published in the November issue of the QST. I also talked to several people, and everybody who really compared both modes considered PACTOR-II to perform better, and that is also my own experience. A friend of mine mentioned a test setup which he used to check the performance of both systems: He used two transceivers with ten watts HF output each that were connected to two dummy loads and two modems. A third transceiver, which was connected to an antenna, was used to transmit white noise. When using two CLOVER boards, which were linked over the residual HF radiation of the dummy loads, it required 8 Watts of the noise transceiver to break the link. When using CLOVER-2000 (the commercial 2 kHz 8-tone wide band version which is also mentioned in the HAL file), only 4 Watts were required to break the link. When he used two PTC-II units instead of the CLOVER hardware, he was not even able to break the link with the maximum noise power of 150 Watts, and traffic was still going through! This is of course no standardized test, but it is easy to reproduce and clearly shows the relation of the robustness of both systems. Due to such personal tests and especially due to the comparison of the performance of both systems in real band conditions, more and more people change from CLOVER to PACTOR-II. For example, the entire store&forward traffic of the world-wide WinLink BBS system, which used to be done in CLOVER, is currently switched to PACTOR-II. A similar development can also be observed in the commercial field. So that's what the customers REALLY say, and that's what performance REALLY speaks. One day, everybody will realize which of both units performs better, especially since there is no relevant improvement of the HAL software. For example, the CLOVER hardware is still only able to operate the same few modes, to say nothing of the simple construction which hardly allows any significant improvement of the performance due to the limited processing power. The latest firmware for the PTC-II however, which was released just a few weeks ago, provides another two new modes (FAX and SSTV). Therefore, why not REALLY let the customers decide instead of putting down a competitor's product? If you also want to hear the other side after reading Bill Henry's statement in packet, just check the Internet pages "http://www.scs-ptc.com". The latest PTC-II firmware can also be downloaded there for free. Many items in Bill's proclamation represent his personal point of view or just contain speculations, and have thus nothing to do with objectivity. Although it is entitled "SCS claims vs reality", there are several items that can be proved to be wrong, in addition to its disreputable note. Here are just two examples: Obviously, Bill Henry is not aware of the details on how PACTOR and PACTOR-II really work (although HAL has implemented PACTOR-I in their own units; maybe that's why the performance of their implementation is so poor): The data compression can NEVER lead to an expansion of a file, as a full PACTOR implementation always compares the original file size with the compressed one, and if the "compressed" one is larger, as in case of rare characters when using the Huffman encoding, the original data is automatically being sent. This means that the advantages of utilizing any other, more powerful compression can be used in the same way as with CLOVER, but CLOVER does not include ANY automatic data compression whereas PACTOR does. How do you want to apply an individual data compression when you are connected with a mailbox? And how will you make sure that the traffic can be monitored by a third party - which is not only a requirement of the amateur radio regulations but also most desirable when looking for a QSO partner - when utilizing an individual coding? Virtually all modems (including phone modems, etc.) nowadays include an on-line data compression, it is thus a "must" for any up-to-date technology. How can it be an advantage not to offer this feature? The on-line compression mode provided in PACTOR-I is matched to plain text, which is transferred most frequently. It hence already represents a basic standard for all systems. PACTOR-II even includes six different on-line compression methods in addition to the run-length encoding, and automatically applies the most effective one. A still more important item is the comparison of the simulator tests. To justify their assertion that CLOVER provided a similar robustness as PACTOR-II, HAL supposed that SCS had used 500 Hz bandwidth instead of 3000 Hz as they did, which would - according to HAL - lead to a better result for the SCS units. This shows that they have not even understood the very basics, as in this case the results for PACTOR-II must have been much worse! If you spread the noise over 3000 Hz to disturb a signal with a bandwidth of 500 Hz, the effect will of course be much less than if you concentrate the same noise power in the small bandwidth of the "target" signal. This means that, if SCS had actually done the tests in the way as Bill Henry claims, PACTOR-II would still work in conditions with an SNR down to minus 26 dB when using 3000 Hz noise bandwidth rather than only down to minus 5 dB, as HAL concluded. This is a nice example of their "know how". How can these guys seriously talk about any simulator measurements? As you can see in their publications, SCS of course also did their simulator tests according to the CCIR standard. This means that you do can compare both measurements, and that PACTOR-II is really able to keep a link and transfer information in conditions with an SNR down to minus 18 dB, whereas a CLOVER link already breaks if the SNR falls behind minus 5 dB. This message is not considered to be an assault on HAL. The intention was just to correct some of their "facts". I have known this company for a long time. They developed nice equipment already many years ago, and I still consider them to be honest. Nevertheless, each digital operator has to decide for himself which mode he prefers (and should be able to do so). On the other hand, it is not my intention to prevent people (like me) from telling their personal opinion. However, it is surely no good policy of a company to put an affront upon a competitor in the international packet radio network. Therefore, I hope that such "statements" will not happen again. Here is a selection of SSTV stations worked in the past weeks: *YO7CJF was the first to transmit color SSTV from Romania. In the meantime several other stations have followed: look also for YO7CGS, YO8RBU . *Some good openings to Japan over the longpath resulted in nice pictures from JA2BWH/1 and JA4HM. *Starting April 1st (not a joke) 1997 Japanese stations are also allowed to do SSTV on ALL phone frequencies ! *D68ZJ, Jean Pierre, from the Comores Archipel hes been active on the 20M SSTV frequencies. QSL via the CBA. Surely a rare one in SSTV ! *Again good signals from Reunion Island : FR5SD and FR5AB are very active in SSTV ! *The Indian Ocean area is discovering SSTV : in two days time I worked 5R8DG, 5R8EW and 5R8KH ! The SSTV virus spreads very quickly, but fortunatly it's very good and friendly one ! HI! *After CN8LI now also CN8NK is transmitting SSTV from Morrocco! *In a good opening to Australia following stations where seen in Europe with good pictures: VK4ZG, VK4ARA, VK6SW, VK6HT, VK6NB and VK3BZA. Where were the ZL SSTV stations ??? *Exotic SSTV DX worked in Japan: XX9KC, KC6VW, BY4BZB, BY7WGI, etc . (This really makes me crazy .... hi hi) *Several stations are already experimenting with the new HQ2 mode. This mode seems to be more contrasfull and less sensitive for QRM. Look for SM5EEP, WB9VCL, W8FBI. A story to follow ! *Myself I'm getting very good results now with the MULTISCAN modem and the MSCAN 2.11 software! Great job MIKE (PA3GPY) !! *The Website of this month is the JASTA (Japan Amateur SSTV Ass.). Take a look at http://www.ask.or.jp/~jasta/ JASTA started "SSTVer Web callsign server" there and are welcoming your registration. By editing registerd datas from now to the end of May,they will publish "JASTA '97 International SSTVer callbook"in July and present a book to everyone who made registration without charge. *I'm receiving a lot of flowers for this bulletin. Unfortunatly the usefull DX info I get for this bulletin is very less ! Please if you see or work a special SSTV station , drop me a few lines! You can also accomplish the same thing with a hard reset -- this is perfomed by turning off the power, placed the jumper of J7 across both pins and then turning on the power. The 2 pin jumper, J7, is appropriately labeled on the KPC-3 PC board. Remember to power off and replace J7 in its original position across 1 pin only. Now, if you want to exit KISS without losing your stored values do the following: With a computer attached to the serial output of the KPC-3, Press and HOLD the ALT key while typing in the numbers 1 9 2 from the NUMERIC KEYPAD (will not work from regular number row at top of keyboard). Then press and HOLD the ALT key and type in numbers 2 5 5 again from the numeric keyboard. And finally repeat the first step, i.e. press and hold the ALT key while typing in the numbers 1 9 2 from the numeric keypad. Best of luck, Dan, W5DF

If this doesn't change the mode of the tnc you can try a hard reset. Open the tnc and locate the reset jumper J7. Place the jumper accross both pins. Apply power to tnc and if the terminal program is set at 1200 baud the display will read: CHECKSUM OK RAM OK xxxK BYTES CLOCK NOT PRESENT REPLACE TEST JUMPER Turn off the powner to the tnc. Put the jmper J7 back to the original position and close up the tnc. I don't know if you did the 192 255 192 code right but I have done it and it works ok. From: lhalliday@creo.bc.ca (laura halliday) Subject: [BitBucket] Too much fun on 10 GHz I've been having way too much fun with this lately, and thought the list might like an update... A while ago I bought a couple of ex-intruder alarm X band Gunn oscillators at a flea market. They work; with detector diodes in the feedhorn they make fine WBFM transceivers - tune one to 10.1 GHz, the other to 10.2 GHz and use a 100 MHz IF, Gunnplexer style. My IF radios are a couple of cheapie AM/FM transistor radios I bought at Radio Shack. The modulator for the Gunn diodes is a regulated DC supply with provision to put a few millivolts of audio on the DC, frequency modulating the oscillator. Fun! Of late I've added to the setup. There was an ad in the 4/1996 issue of VHF Communications that offered Ku band satellite TV LNBs, already converted to 10 GHz. So I bought a pair. Their LO is a 9.0 GHz DRO, so I needed some way of converting the 1.2 GHz IF (I've been using frequencies around 10.2 GHz) to 100 MHz. The result was a junkbox converter consisting of a MAR-6 preamp, a TUF-5SM mixer and a POS-535 oscillator for the LO (the local Mini-Circuits representatives know me :-). Plus supporting DC stuff, including a voltage divider and trimmer pot for the VCO. For good measure I added a low-pass filter on the IF output. I laid the board out with scotch tape and guesswork. It works fine. I don't actually have anything in my junkbox that will make 1100 MHz noises, so I tuned the VCO to 366.666 MHz, knowing that diode mixers respond on odd harmonics, albeit with higher conversion loss. Again, it works fine. One nice data point is that my original frequency measurements, done with a ruler, a piece of PC board and a multimeter said 10.2 GHz. With the well-calibrated DRO (9.0 GHz +/- 0.01% according to the label), I now make it 10.216 GHz, +/- 900 kHz. Signals from one end of my shack to the other are full quieting on both systems, but I have several LOS paths (10-100 km - I live on a hill) from my apartment parking lot. We'll see. :-) I note that wideband seems terribly unfashionable among hard-core microwave types. Could it be that the emphasis on weak signal narrowband DX operation has discouraged the development of around town utility microwave operation? References: Microwave Handbook (RSGB). Many of you may be familiar with APRS especially since the recent articles in QST and other publications. This software is available for DOS, MAC, and Win 3.1/95. Personally, I just started using it last week and it is fun! First I tried VHF (2m, 145.79 1200 baud AFSK packet) and then HF (30m, 10.151 lsb 300 baud packet). It is neat to see the stations pop up on the map around the US and even DX (on HF)... The way it works is that you mostly monitor for packets which contain position (location) or WX information, but occasionally you transmit packets of your own containing information about your own station. When you do, the information pops up on the screen/map of all the other monitoring stations. Some stations connect GPS units to show position changes in motion... What does this have to do with QRP? Well, first of all the power and antenna gain are ALREADY a part of the beacon information... Second, folks are interested in portable/mobile configurations that can be devoted to APRS operation: palm-/lap-top computer, HF packet TNC, radio (and possibly GPS). A recent post on the TAPR APRS mailing list lamented the *possibility* of a $199 30m rig just for this one application/frequency. I immediately thought of a "QRP" rig... So far, I have used my FT-990DC/PK-232/half-sloper at 50w and have shown up on maps around the US. My plan is to reduce power to 5w and test the concept at QRP levels with existing equipment, but a dedicated "APRS QRP Radio" and a less power hungry TNC would be the ultimate for portability... Watch for my "QRP APRS" operation on 30m (10.151 lsb) starting today. (If this works out AND interest warrants, test 2 will be IC-706, OutBacker, PK-232, and laptop all powered by battery and at QRP power levels, but the the battery won't last too long with that equipment!) Maybe all of this has been done? Maybe I'm mixing apples and oranges? What do you think? Brian ke7gh@primenet.com >or< http://www.primenet.com/~ke7gh

From: lhalliday@creo.bc.ca Subject: [BitBucket] Getting started on 10 GHz A number of people have asked about more information on 10 GHz, so here's a reading list to start with. If you've already seen a version of this list on AMSAT-BB, please accept my apologies for the duplication. The LNBs are indeed ex-satellite TV stuff, and I *do* plan on playing with 10 GHz ATV - transmitting voice with such equipment is ridiculous overkill. I got them through KM Publications, the folks who publish VHF Communications. They're on the web. Books books books...from the RSGB, buy the Microwave Handbook. All three volumes. It's not cheap, but it's money well spent. From the ARRL, buy the UHF/Microwave Experimenter's Handbook and the UHF/Microwave Projects Manual. A non-obvious (and inexpensive) choice from the RSGB is Practical Transmitters for Novices, which has a very good chapter on 10 GHz. This was my primary reference on the subject, BTW. The RSGB VHF/UHF Manual is due for an update but still worth a look. Magazines? DUBUS, UKW-Berichte/VHF Communications. The Above and Beyond column in 73. The RSGB Microwave Newsletter. Microwaves and RF is a professional journal, both fascinating and heartbreaking (especially the test equipment ads - sigh). Conference proceedings are nice to have, but the ARRL's always seem to go out of print immediately. Look for collections like DUBUS Teknik and the UHF Compendium. You can find pointers to all this stuff on the Web. From: Stan Wilson <microres@crl.com> (by way of "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com>) Subject: [BitBucket] QRP Inflection Point ? -- QRP Inflection Point ? I have enjoyed the hobby of amateur radio for over 45 years. During that period I have had the privilege of being in the grand stands when major changes (inflection points) occured in our hobby. I seen SSB go from home brew 5 and 10 watt amplifiers with monster capacitor banks to the sophisticated solid state rigs featuring DSP of today. Packet grow from 25 users to thousands and FM from converted taxi cab radios to pocket size units communicating through satallites. Each of those were but a ripple at the start and hardly noticed by the amateur community. Today, I believe we are standing at the next major Inflection Point in our hobby. No, it is not QRP operation. It is the ability to communicateat QRP levels with high reliability. The technology has been available for the past several years. However, only now have a few (less than half dozen) reduced it to amateur use. The real hero of a QRP QSO is the operator that can pull a signal out of the noise level. Anyone can run microwatts. Very few have the ability to build a world class station that can receive a -20 db signal in the. noise and QRN of today's amateur bands. Today experiments are being conducted on 3591 khz with BPSK for both CW and ASCII text messages. Those experiments are being done at low power levels (1 watt). The amateur experiments grew out of efforts by the Lowfers running similiar tests on 175 khz. In both areas there has been success. What do you need to get into on this next major development in our hobby ? 1) A stable transmitter and receiver (xtal control will work) (a simple modification to a NorCal 40A) 2) A watt or so of power (you know how to do that) 3) A computer, an old 286 or 386 running 20mhz to 40 mhz (cheap today) 4) Software (available for downloading from longwave web page and or ve2iq's web page on the internet) 5) A simple circuit from Jan 92 QST for receiving.(I think kits are are still available) I used a radio shack board and a little wire. 6) A simple Ex-Or driver for keying your xmitter So we are standing at a major Inflection Point in low power amateur communications. You can look backward and build a old TNT xmitter and regen receiver, OR look forward and modify your station for the next decade of communications. The choice is yours. de Stan AK0B microres@crl.com ----- In response to some of the questions: References: Longwave web page http://members.aol.com/lwcanews/index.html ve2iq web page http://w3.ietc.ca/home/bill/bbs.htm The present amateur BPSK orgin was Coherent CW. The orginial petit filter was not an easy construction project. However, the DSP board (without a DSP chip - just logic chips) from January 92 QST is an easy project and only cost about $20 for the parts. I think the kit was or is around $65 (check with ve2iq). Complete circuit is in the QST article so can homebrew the DSP circuit. Computer: You need something a little faster than a XT, but do not need a 486 or MS Windows. Program is called Coherent.zip Version 5.6 available on the Longwave page. Anyway that is the zip file you need. Lots of backgroung stuff on both pages. Look around. BPSK is a few db better than coherent CW. The program will allow bits of up to 5 msec. The old CCW was 100 msec. The program allows change from the keyboard. de Stan AK0B ----- QST January 1992 page 23 "A Receiver Spectral Display Using DSP" by Bill de Carle VE2IQ QEX February 1994 page 25 A DSP Version of Coherent-CW (CCW) by by Bill de Carle VE2IQ Also in the ARRL Handbook 1993 or 1994 issue. de Stan AK0B

Most of the content in the Handbook doesn't need to change year to year because the laws of the universe don't change that often. You buy a copy if you need some of the newer articles, or you dropped so much hot solder on the old copy that it looks like swiss cheese. Your annual, even monthly, updates are the other other publications such as QST... A good hard bound book costs a little bit to produce, the Handbook's price is still a bargain if you look at other similar technical books. Now, I agree that there is a bit of a price gouge when it comes to ARRL CD-ROMs -- If one pays the annual subscription rate for QST, er dues to ARRL, why should they have to pay $40.00 to get an electronic copy of the magazines (which costs a couple of bucks to 'print') ... Your membership renewal should have a check box where you can get QST or the CD-ROM with your annual renewal and for an extra $5 bucks you get both. Many of the other printed books the ARRL puts out are real bargains compared to similar technical texts. My $0.02 worth. I have been reading it for many years and referring to it often both as amateur and engineer. I've bought it many years and when I couldn't afford to buy it I borrowed it from the public library. I have found that it does change and keep up with the state of the art. The older issues had data on many vacuum tubes that are all but obsolete today. The newest issues have information about computer interfacing standards. What more can we expect? Sure the basic theory hasn't changed of the behavior code for hams but the technical construction information has surely kept up with what new components are being used and available to hams. I knew some engineers who referred to us hams as half a pigs rear but they kept a copy of the ARRL handbook on their book shelf too. If you ever did any technical writing you would understand how difficult it is to assemble such a publication. Sure there have been some errors - but they do get corrected in subsequent years. If you find any I am sure that ARRL will consider your correction. If you think the book isnt worth it dont buy it. Most hams think it is a bargain and those that don' borrow it. But please don't knock it because it is not just a reference of how to construction data - it is the definition of what many of us think ham radio is all about. 73 Bob W2ILP ----- Submissions: bitbucket@primenet.com Administrative requests: majordomo@primenet.com WWW: http://www.primenet.com/~ke7gh Questions: owner-bitbucket@primenet.com

The point that I was trying to make is that the HANDBOOK has failed to keep up with the times. If you look at the latest issue of the HANDBOOK you will find that all the high output VHF and UHF RF amplifiers in the construction section are tube type. I have looked high and low for a publication that has good RF amp projects for above 50 mhz and I haven't found any. You are right in the fact that a dictionary doesn't change, But as words are added to the english language the are added to the dictionary. I have found that construction projects for the VHF and UHF bands have been ignored. I would much rather build a 500 watt solid state amp than the furnaces that are currently featured in the HANDBOOK. I have been in amateure radio for more than 35 years and have built a lot of equipment over the years. My first SSB XMTR was homebuilt 20 watt double sideband on 160 meters. The point that I am trying to make is that there places that the HANDBOOK need to be modernize. I agree with the idea of making the handbook looseleaf and purchasing updates, this would reduce publishing costs and the league would make more off of the sale of updates. And the more they make in profit off publications lower dues would be. I hope someone in ARRL subscribes to bitbucket and passes on the info. Bill Chambers, n0mbw Springfield, Mo. -----

Date: Wed, 12 Mar 1997 00:06:07 -0500 (EST) Cc: steve@grex.cyberspace.org (STeve Andre') Bill, the ARRL handbook has absolutely changed significantly in the last 20 years; its changed even in the last five. Being a reference book, I would expect that large sections of it to be stable from year to year. Being a technological reference, I would expect it to change in part over time, which it has. I am *hardly* an apologist for the ARRL: I have let my membership in that organization drop many times as I am tired of their generally too conservative approach to the political, and their backward looking attitudes. *However*, the ARRL has truely changed their publications, such that they are among the best in the field. Not only does it take time to find good authors to create technical articles, but it also takes effort to create reasonable projects that an enthuiastic ham can build. There is a balance between neat projects that nearly no can build (becuase of the cost) vs. simple projects that anyone could build (but wouldn't want to). For every state-of-the-art article there will be grousing about component availability, yet simplistic things garner the interest of the newcomers only. Thats a fine line to walk. So the ARRL does what it can, and overall, their publications are amazingly well done. Is there room for improvement? Sure. But I would rather see other parts of the oganization changed first. The handbook trys very hard to satisfy the needs of all but the state of the art takes off in many directions. I am a VE and so realize the needs of new hams. I also relize that the number of new RF transistors and MMICs developed for VHF use grows yearly. The handbook trys to keep an even balance but should get more input from hams in regard to such things as recent VHF/UHF solid-state development. If the handbook suceeds in helping hams be more than appliance operators it is serving its purpose. Hams who have built their own unique gear have and can continue to share it with others via QST and Handbook construction articles. Far-Circuits has PC boards that are being sold at near cost that can enable us to duplicate some projects. Hams that are professionals have and should continue to provide updated information. MODE: RTTY only BANDS: 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10M CATEGORIES: 1) Single op, all band 3) Multi-op, all band 2) Single op, single band 4) Multi-op, Multi-transmitter 5) Short Wave Listener NOTE: Categories 1, 2, and 3 may not transmit on two or more bands at the same time. No station may enter more than one category. EXCHANGE: Send: RST + QSO number + Time in UTC. MULTIPLIERS: "NOTE:" ((( Starting in '97, JA 0 thru 9 call areas are now included as additional multipliers.))) Each DXCC country, including first QSO with W, VE, VK and JA will counts as a multiplier on each band. Each call district in W, VE, VK and JA will count as an additional multliplier on each band. Also, each continent (6) will count once, not once per band. QSO POINTS: Count 1 point per QSO. Same station may be worked on other bands. Duplicate contacts on same band receive zero points and must be clearly marked in the log. FINAL SCORE: Total QSOs x total multipliers x number of continents (max 6) LOGS: Use separate logsheets for each band. Logs must show: BAND, DATE and TIME (UTC), CALLSIGN, MESSAGE Sent and Received, COUNTRIES and POINTS claimed. Summary sheet must show full scoring, times of operation, and address for correspondence. Include names and callsigns of all multi-op station operators. Computer generated logs containing all specified info are welcome. DEADLINE: Logs must be received by May 31 to qualify. Mail logs to: JOHN BARBER G4SKA PO BOX 8 TIVERTON, DEVON EX16 5YU, ENGLAND AWARDS: Certificates will be awarded to the top 3 stations in each category, the top 5 single operators in each continent, and to the top single operator in each W/VE/VK call area. Your comments would be much appreciated. Please include them with your log. COMMENTS: By Rich N6GG, This is a 48 hour contest, but only 30 hours operating time allowed for single ops. The time off periods must be 3 hours minimum length and listed in the summary sheet. This contest gets great activity from all over the world. Try to plan your off times to be during the least productive time of day, such as when propagation does not favor your area. The fact that W/VE/VK/JA call areas count as separate countries on each band means that CQing should be the most productive way to make a good score for the W/VE/VK/JA ops. Also, band multipliers helps to alleviate the QRM on the high bands, by spreading out the CQers to other bands. Don't forget the WAC bonus of six multipliers. _ __________________________________________________ _ / ) | Ron Stailey, K5DJ (ex:ab5kd) | ( \ / / | 504 Dove Haven Drive | \ \ __( (_ | Round Rock, Texas 78664-5926 | _) )__ (((\ \> |/-) (512) 255-5000-(Shack Phone) (-\ < / /))) (\\\\ \_/ / E-Mail- k5dj@easy.com \ \_/ ////) \ / Remember: \ / \ _/ Big antennas high in the sky work better |\_ / ) / | than little ones close to the ground.... | \ ( / / |_________________________________________________| \ \

From: "Emmerson, Martin" <memmer@gre.stcssl.co.uk> (by way of "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com>) Subject: [BitBucket] HQ Modes ! Dear Brian, Below is a copy of a 'News Letter' which I have prepared describing the current situation regarding the HQ mode and the "unofficial/pirate" implementations that have appeared ! If you could make this information available to other SSTV'ers, so they know what is going on ! It is really up to others if they want to prevent the HQ mode having the same fate as has unfortunately happened to the Martin 1/Scottie 1 modes with all the various implementations being slightly different. Brian, any comments or feedback, is most welcome, as always..... Best 73's Martin G3OQD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- HQ MODES NEWS UPDATE 2 March 1997 Dear Robot 1200c/SuperScan 2001 user, The HQ mode was introduced at the end of October 1996, to provide improved picture quality and reduced transmission times compared to the currently popular 'Martin 1' and 'Scottie 1' modes. At least part of this improvement in quality, is made possible by the precision and accuracy of the crystal oscillators in the Robot 1200C and SuperScan 2001, originally added to work with the synchronous modes like Martin and Scottie. The HQ mode has been specifically designed to work with these dedicated scan converters and takes advantage of their particular characteristics. To avoid a repetition of the Martin 1/Scottie 1 'sloping picture' phenomenon on PC based software systems, and errors in colour registration, other SSTV software developers, have been asked to satisfy the precise timing parameters of the HQ mode and verify the performance of their systems with the HQ mode designer before releasing this mode on their software. However, despite this request, one company, G. V Associates, who produce WinPix Pro, have secretly reverse engineered the HQ mode, presumably from signals received from the 1200/2001, and now have HQ mode on their system, which was released around the beginning of February 1997. As a user of the V4.6/V1.6 EPROM you should be aware that this implementation of the HQ mode does not conform to the original specifications, as might be expected from the way the parameters were obtained. You can recognize these transmissions as they do not have the yellow writing on blue background callsign identification which you will be familiar with from your own transmissions. Due to timing inaccuracies you will observe more ragged verticals from these transmissions. There is also a problem with picture starting, as it is almost impossible to start the Robot/Superscan on these transmissions if the VIS start-up code is missed. This system is ruining the HQ mode and spoiling the hobby for ALL slowscanners. To make matters even worse there is now a 'Freeware' version of this software called "WindowSSTV" which may be downloaded from the Internet, so you can try it and verify the problems, I mention, for yourself. If you have any comments or suggestions please write and tell me:- E-Mail -> memmer@stcssl.co.uk.

From: "Brian K. Short KE7GH" <ke7gh@primenet.com> Subject: [BitBucket] ARRL Publications? I received an advertisement from ARRL today (and I love to receive junk mail, really) and realized that one can spend too much time staring at a tube (monitor). There are many books in the Publcation Catalog that I had never even heard about! Not counting getting the back issues of QST on CDROM (had to purge/recycle the hard copies some time ago) and the 1997 Handbook (either CD or hard copy as my copies go from 1974 to 1981 to 1987 and a *lot* does happen in the world of ham radio in 10 years), I came up with the following list of interesting offerings: #5714 Personal Computers in the Ham Shack $15.95 #5854 Getting on Track With APRS $14.95 #3207 W1FB Design Notebook $10 #3851 Hints & Kinks $10 #5617 QRP Power $12 #3657 W1FB QRP Notebook $10 #4319 NOS Intro $23 #4955 Packet SPEED $15 Some seem like remarkable buys, others... Can't judge a book by the cover either (you can quote me). Anyone have specific comments on any of these books? Where is the least expensive place to order these as the total (if I were to get all of them) is over $110? Anyone have "used" copies of any of these books for sale? Anyone want to get rid of the QST or ARRL Handbook CDROMs? Not that ARRL Publications are such a bad buy, I'm just miserly! Besides, I'm still digesting the TAPR book in small bites, but just need a little lighter reading to wash it down. What do you think? 73, Brian ke7gh@primenet.com
