Nije lose za pocetak, Barros je drugi na kvalifikacijama, Doohan je ponovo
u formi - oko 0.5 sekundi ispred Barrosa, Biaggi u totalnoj nemoci, tek 3.

Strašna trka.
2 starta, 2x pace car, 2x riknuo Mclaren. I još uz sve, Šumaher
pobedio. Ima li lepšeg scenarija? ;)
podijum, završio tamo gde i spada - na njivi .. no, dobro, vratio
se na stazu sa 7 (SEDAM) i po minuta zakašnjenja.
I to je to .. Šumi, startovao treći, išao u 2 boxa, dobio stop & go

Canadian GP, Post Race press conference
Questioner: Congratulations, Michael, on a victory which has opened up
the world championship. After the second start, when Mika had retired
and you were close to David Coulthard, did you think you might have been
able to challenge for the lead?
Michael Schumacher: I had a good race with him until the moment he
retired. I don't know what strategy he was on, but I was definitely
faster. Unfortunately there was no way for me to get by, and the moment
his car broke down it was obviously a good situation for me, to score
points and to catch up with him in the championship. Now my situation in
the championship looks much better than it did before this race.
Questioner: Coming out of the pits after your first refuelling stop, you
almost touched Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who went off the road at the first
corner. That moment eventually cost you a 10-second penalty: do have any
reflections on it now?
Michael Schumacher: I haven't seen it [on video yet] and I can only
imagine what happened. If [what you say] is what happened, then I really
will have to make my excuses to him. I looked to my right when I came
out of the pit lane, to see if there was anyone [on the track], and I
didn't see anyone. So I pulled over to get on to the line. In the
mirrors it is almost impossible to see things, and I really don't know
what happened, I will have to look at the video. But if I have done
anything wrong I want to excuse myself.
Questioner: You also had a difficult few moments trying to lap Damon Hill...
Michael Schumacher: Yes. You wouldn't want to hear the words that I was
thinking at that moment, because that was purely dangerous driving]. If
someone wants to kill you, he should do it in a different way. We are
doing 320 km/h down there, and for someone to move off the line three
times is simply [unacceptable]. You can do it once, moving from one side
to the other, that is OK, it's what we usually do. But to do it three
times is impossible, you cannot have a situation where [you come so
close] to touching each other. I was so angry with that situation and I
wonder why he didn't get a penalty for what he did. I know I cut the
chicane, but I had almost lost my car avoiding that circumstance and I
was lucky even to get through the chicane anyway. It is impossible for
such an experienced man to do such things. I can't handle that and I
will be having big words with him.
Questioner: Giancarlo, congratulations on your second 2nd place in two
weeks. How hard was Michael pushing you when you were ahead of him?
Giancarlo Fisichella: From the beginning the race for me was very
difficult because our strategy was to do just one pitstop, which made it
too difficult. When Michael was behind me, about 20 laps after the
start, the behaviour of the car was much better. Also my lap times were
quite good, even though I had been having a problem with third gear from
the beginning of the race.
Questioner: Did you think at one time you might have been able to win?
Giancarlo Fisichella: Hmmmm ... we are getting better and better, race
after race. Today the victory was very close. Anyway, it's important to
be in front, it's important to be quick and I hope soon I will have a
victory.
Questioner: What happened when Villeneuve tried to pass you after the
safety car was withdrawn?
Giancarlo Fisichella: I made a mistake in the last corner, and he was
quicker than me as the start line. In the end I went on the inside: I
saw him brake too late and he spun.
Questioner: Eddie, this is your fourth third place of the season. Are
you getting a bit fed up with third?
Eddie Irvine: It's better than fourth, or fifth, or sixth. At one stage
I was 17th so I can't exactly complain, can I? I was stuck behind a
Minardi for 20 or 30 laps, so that wasn't particularly impressive. To
end up here [on the podium] is a bit of a surprise.
Questioner: After going nearly a whole lap on a flat tyre after the
first start, was your car's handling still okay?
Eddie Irvine: I thought I had damaged the suspension because immediately
after I was tapped up the rear the car felt strange to drive. But
something had sliced the tyre, it was probably someone's front wing end
plate. The tyre went flat immediately and I thought it was the
suspension which was damaged. I was thinking 'should I keep going?'
because there was [bits of] tyre flying all over the place and I thought
I might get in trouble for putting so much rubber on the track. But I
just kept going, [my crew] put a set of fresh tyres on and there was no
problem. The most important thing was that I had not lost a lap.
Questioner: You were behind Wurz for several laps. Was his car slower
than yours?
Eddie Irvine: I felt that I was quicker than him, but the two of us
would sometimes drop back from whoever it was in the Minardi ahead of
us. Whenever I was able to trouble him, the two of us would catch up
with the Minardi and [Wurz] would then get a tow from the Minardi. That
meant I had no chance, because he was quick on the exit of corners and I
wasn't. It was a stalemate. Also, during the safety car periods we
didn't know what to do about our strategy. But it worked out well and we
did the two short stints at the end.

Sauber GP - Canada quotes
Jean Alesi:
The trick at starts is to know when you have achieved enough, not to be
greedy and try to pass too many people. There are some youger drivers
who do not seem to understand this ! I made a good first start, but then
the next thing I knew was Wurz's Benetton rolling across the top of me.
I made another good start the second time, but then Irvine moved accross
and his wheel hit my nose and took it off. Then I felt another bump and
suddenly I had Trulli sitting on top of me. Each time there was nothing
that I could do, and that makes it all the more frustating because this
was the sort of race to have taken points from.
Johnny Herbert:
After I bent a trackrod in the accident with Jean and Wurz, I thought
for a while I would'nt be racing at all today ! I began the restart from
the pits, and it says everything that I was up to 13th at the end of the
lap. But my car was slow on the straight and I really struggled to pass
Rosset and Nakano. Magnussen was also very quick on the straight, but
slow on the corners. I could have stayed behind him, but it's my job to
try and pass. When I did, I spun at the hairpins as the vack just slid
round on me. I'd been unhappy with the quality of the downchanges, and
maybe that was a contributory factor. Though I didn't stall I couldn't
get a gear to restart, so that was it, race over.
Peter Sauber:
I'm sure you will pardon me, but I don't want to say anything about our
race today.

THE RACE
Much needed points and a podium finish were so nearly within the grasp
of Damon Hill and the Benson and Hedges Jordan team today, in a
spectacular Canadian Grand Prix. An electrical problem, however, meant
success eluded the team, leaving a sea of disappointed faces in the
Jordan garage.
Damon Hill was able to capitalise on the unusually high number of racing
incidents to run competitively at the top end of the field for much of
the race. Running in third place, on a one stop strategy, he was well
placed for a podium finish, but suffered electrical problems after his
pit stop. He came back to the pits in the hope that the problem could be
rectified, and continued to race again, but was eventually forced to
abandon his race on lap 43
Ralf Schumacher, after qualifying so strongly in fifth place, had a
disappointing day. He stalled at the first start, and then suffered from
loss of drive on the first corner of the second start. Post race
analysis found this to be caused by a faulty clutch actuator.
DAMON HILL CHASSIS 03 Did not finish - electrical problem "I feel so
disappointed so I can't imagine how Eddie and the team feels. We really
needed to get points, and we were looking not only to do that but to be
on to the podium, only then to be caught out by what seems to be an
electrical problem. We can take some comfort from the fact that we were
not only up with the front runners, but were making fairly respectable
times and were competitive. I was running beautifully on a one stop
strategy and then I got a misfire. It felt so fantastic to be up at the
front again. This was the first time this year that I have been able to
race for the top three positions and I was not going to let second or
third place go that easily, so I enjoyed some racing with Michael!"
RALF SCHUMACHER CHASSIS 04 Did not finish - Loss of drive caused by a
faulty clutch actuator "On the first start I stalled the engine; the
clutch came in quite harshly and the engine stopped. At the second start
I put the revs higher and that was too much for the clutch and I lost
the rear drive. There was a little drive to begin with but at the first
corner when I shifted down there was no more drive on the wheel and no
engine brake so I spun."
EDDIE JORDAN, TEAM OWNER
"What I feel cannot be printed! All I can say is that at least it was
fantastic to see Damon running in points and podium positions. We have
to keep the faith."

Ferrari press release - Canadian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher made a good first start into second, while Eddie
Irvine was seventh, before an accident saw the race red flagged. Another
accident brought out the safety-car at the second start. Irvine had a
puncture to the left rear wheel and came in under the safety-car and
came out in 17th place. On lap 5 when the race re-started, Schumacher
was second. The safety-car reappeared on lap 13 and again on lap 20,
when Michael made a pit-stop, rejoining in third place. He moved up to
second on lap 23. He had to pit for a stop-and-go penalty on lap 35,
which dropped him to third, but again went second on lap 38, the same
lap on which Irvine made his first stop, dropping from sixth to eighth.
When Fisichella pitted on lap 44, Schumacher took the lead, pitting
again on lap 50 and maintaining his lead to the end. Eddie made his
final stop on lap 55, when third and maintained that position to the
flag. After the press conference, Schumacher went to see Frentzen and
after listening to what he had to say, Michael apologised for the
incident, explaining he had simply not seen the Williams.
Jean Todt: "It was an incredible race. I cannot recall when I last saw
one like it having the safety-car appear three times complicated our
planned two stop strategy for both our cars. Michael made a great first
start until the red flag stopped the race. Michael's 10 second penalty
also cost us twenty seconds. Eddie had a puncture at the second start,
which relegated him to 17th. Despite all this we got both our cars onto
the podium and the team made an exceptional contribution to this result.
Michael drove an unbelievable race and Eddie managed to claim third. We
must thank Goodyear, who provided us with very good tyres. We must now
look to the rest of the Championship and to our forthcoming test
sessions. Our feet must stay on the ground and we must continue to work
with determination, just as we have done so far."
Michael Schumacher: "We have closed the gap to McLaren this weekend and
I am very happy about this. I am also optimistic about the future as we
have some more developments to come for the next few races and I hope we
can reach the same level as McLaren or even get ahead of them. My
special thanks to Goodyear, who gave us a competitive tyre here and I am
sure that will continue. For the Championship, this is the best possible
situation, as I have maximum points and McLaren has none.
Fantastic team work and the quick pit stops won the race today. As for
the incident with Frentzen, I do not know what happened. If it was my
fault the I want to apologise him. I looked in my mirrors and saw
nothing, then I looked to my right and still saw nothing. So when I was
called in for my penalty, I did not understand, as I knew I had not
speeded in the pit-lane. I want to have a strong word with Hill. What he
did was unacceptable. To change line once is normal, but to do it three
times at 320 km/h down the straight is very dangerous. He braked early
for the first chicane and I had to cut the chicane to stop hitting him.
I am very angry."
Eddie Irvine: "I was very fortunate today. I was in the middle of the
first accident and did not get hit and again, I was in the middle of the
second and just had my rear tyre sliced by someone's front wing. At
first I thought I had broken my suspension but when the team changed the
tyres everything was fine. As the safety-car was out I did not lose a
lap, but myself and Wurz spent many laps trying to get past a Minardi. I
made my job difficult this weekend by spinning off a couple of times in
practice so I am very happy with my fourth podium of the season. Michael
showed today what can happened when we put the McLarens under pressure.
As usual my mechanics did a great job to get me out of the pits so
quickly and our strategy was just right, the team telling me to push so
I came out of the pits 2 seconds ahead of Wurz."
auto-moto.27obren,
Benetton press release - Canadian Grand Prix
Giancarlo Fisichella finished in second place in the Canadian Grand
Prix, while Alexander Wurz used the spare car to finish in fourth.
Giancarlo Fisichella: "Two second positions in two races is an
incredible result. I can't quite believe it! I would like to say a big
thank you to the Mild Seven Benetton Playlife team and particularly to
my mechanics. I had a big problem at the beginning of the race because I
was only doing one pit stop, so I had a lot of fuel in the car. For the
first ten to 15 laps there was a lot of understeer. I also had a problem
with third gear. The gears got stuck when I changed up and this got
worse as the race went on. But I am delighted with second place. It is a
fantastic result."
Alexander Wurz: "This has to be the craziest race of my career. On the
first start Damon Hill pushed me to the left and I touched Alesi's car.
It wasn't very hard, but it was enough to make me fly over into the
gravel. I immediately went on the radio to say I was OK and asked if I
could use the T-car for the restart. The race was hard because with the
Safety Car coming out so many times it was difficult to keep the tyres
at the right temperature. My brakes were also fading, so I needed to
concentrate on finishing the race and I could not push Irvine too hard.
I am delighted with three world championship points. Giancarlo did very
well to get second place. It is a great result for the team."
David Richards (Chief Executive): "The afternoon did not start very well
with Alexander's big accident at the first corner. Thankfully he was
unhurt. The restart and all the circumstances of the race played into
our hands very well. Giancarlo took all the opportunities there for him,
while Alexander worked extremely hard. They are two young drivers who
really are doing a fantastic job."

Hajnc Heralf Frencen se juče (petak) žestoko slupao prilikom testiranja u
Manjikuru u Francuskoj! :(
ustanovilo njegovo zdravstveno stanje.

Vasser's Record Run Earns Him Provisional Pole
CART Online (July 10, 1998) -- Jimmy Vasser set a qualifying record for
the temporary road course at Burke Lakefront Airport Friday and earned the
provisional pole for the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by
Star Bank.
Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) averaged 134.385 miles per hour (56.417
seconds) on the 2.106-mile circuit, which is laid out on the airport
runways. He improved nearly four seconds from his best morning practice
lap of 60.383 seconds to put himself in position to collect his third pole
of the year and the seventh of his FedEx Championship Series career.
Final qualifying begins at 1:30 p.m. ET Saturday. The winner earns the
$10,000 Marlboro Pole Award, with the opportunity to pick up an additional
$255,000 in rollover bonus money with a victory Sunday. Including the
$100,000 winner's purse, the potential payout for a victory from the pole
this weekend is $365,000.
The Marlboro Pole Award rollover bonus has been accumulating at a rate of
$15,000 per event since defending series champion Alex Zanardi (Target
Reynard Honda) became the last driver to win from the pole, at Cleveland a
year ago.
Vasser is attempting to earn his first road-course pole position since
1996 at Cleveland. He topped Zanardi's track record speed of 133.048 mph
(56.984 seconds) by more than half a second.
Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) was second at 133.181 mph (56.927
seconds) followed by Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda) at 132.990 mph
(57.009 seconds). Zanardi qualified fourth at 132.936 mph (57.032 seconds)
followed by Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) at 132.920 mph
(57.039 seconds).
What They're Saying:
JIMMY VASSER, Target Reynard Honda: "We had some major problems in the
morning. We came with a setup that wasn't conducive to the circuit. You
could only get a few laps out of your tires before they started to go
away, but it wasn't so much the tires as it was the setup. Alex [Zanardi]
seemed to have a pretty good setup, so going into qualifying, we took most
of what Alex was doing and a little bit of what we were doing and threw
something at the car, and it worked fantastic. The cones were in some
tough places out there, but on my last lap, I really put one together, and
lo and behold, one of the cones was gone in an area where you could make
up a lot of speed. I was able to carry a lot of speed through there and
that made a difference. This is probably one of the more physical races
that we run. It's certainly fun, but it's one of the more difficult races
of the year."
BRYAN HERTA, Shell Reynard Ford: "I got a front row seat for that
[Vasser's provisional pole-winning lap]. I was following him, and my car
was still on a pretty good lap, but I could see that he was inching away
from me. I thought, 'Oh, he's gonna get me on that one,' and he did. Jimmy
really put a good one together. I think the car was pretty good this
morning, the track just got a little 'grippier' this afternoon. We're
gonna have to chase it down a little bit tomorrow."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, KOOL Reynard Honda: "It [the track] feels a little less
bumpy than last year, but because of that, what bumps there are are a lot
more important. We spent a lot of the afternoon trying to find a balance
over the bumps. The track got better as more rubber went down. Qualifying
was a bit frustrating because I felt that there was more time in the whole
package. But we're in a good group for tomorrow and we'll go back after it
then."
What's Noteworthy:
- Jimmy Vasser is chasing the seventh pole position of his FedEx
Championship Series career and his third of this season. Vasser's previous
poles this year came at Japan, where he was awarded the pole based on
having the best practice time following a rainout of qualifying, and at
Milwaukee. Vasser won four pole positions en route to the series
championship in 1996, but has not won one on a road or street circuit
since 1996 at Burke Lakefront Airport.
- Bryan Herta and Dario Franchitti continued their recent road course
qualifying success posting the second and third fastest times,
respectively, during Friday's provisional qualifying. Herta and Franchitti
qualified first and second, respectively, for the most recent FedEx
Championship Series event at Portland International Raceway last month.
- Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) qualified 12th provisionally
Friday with a best lap of 131.331 mph (57.729 sec). Three-time (1986, '87
and '92) series champion Rahal, whose first CART career victory came in
the series' inaugural event at Cleveland in 1982, is in his final season
as a FedEx Championship Series driver, dubbed "Rahal's Last Ride."

Zanardi ponovo pobedio! :> Druga titula je vec osigurana..
auto-moto.73.dag.,
During the mid-season break of the World Rally Championship, much
has happened that will decide the future of rallying in 1998 and 1999.
It's about this time of the year teams start to make moves of either
retaining the services of their current drivers, releasing one or both
and procuring new blood. The big talk leading up to Rally of New
Zealand is Colin McRae's move to Ford.
According to reliable sources Colin will drive the new Ford Focus in
the 1999 WRC. If he does leave, he will most certainly take his current
co-driver Nicky Grist with him to Ford. No one is quite sure what sort
of money tempted Colin away from Subaru, but it certainly must have been
substantial for the Scot. With Colin's exit and no word on Pierro Liatti's
future, the feeling is the spare seat at Subaru will be offered to
Richard Burns, who left the team for Mitsubishi at the end of 1995.
Following this, the spare seat at Mitsubishi is most likely to be
filled by Freddy Loix. Harry Rovanpera has been tipped for a WRC
drive, but with Seat in the development stages of their own WRC car
it's unlikely he'll leave without testing the new vehicle.
With Kankkunen contracted to the end of 1999 it's clear who will move
aside for Colin at Ford. Even on results alone, you would have to
pick Thiry. It has also been confirmed that Ari Vatanen will be
competing on this year's Neste Rally Finland in an M-Sport-prepared
Escort World Rally car. The ex-world champion replaced Bruno Thiry
earlier this year in the FIA World Rally Championship when the Belgian
driver was injured. Vatanen, from Finland has competed on his home
rally 19 times and won it twice.
TTE looks to be unchanged for 1999 with Sainz and Auriol both with
safe seats. Indeed Sainz has a vested interest in TTE and is tipped
to eventually take over from Ove Andersson once he believes his WRC
driving days are over.

ZANARDI WINS FOURTH IN-A-ROW
By Jim Murphy
Alex Zanardi overcame a spin, stopped cars blocking the track in front of him,
an pre-race engine change, and an ill-handling car to battle forward before
the final obstacle in the person of Michael Andretti stood between him and
victory. Approaching Turn 3 with just over 3 laps to go, Zanardi dove to the
inside of Michael Andretti and move into the lead of the Molson Indy Toronto
amidst a flurry of tire smoke and dust.
"I did everything today," Alex observed. "I spun, I got stuck into an
accident. I had problems with the tires first and with the brakes, and
everything. Yet here I am in between these two guys [on the podium], it's just
simply unbelievable. I had no brakes left at the front and I kept locking the
rears."
"It looked like Michael, who was the guy in front of me, had nothing left. It
wasn't me going super fast at the end but it was that he had nothing left to
compete with me."
"I made it pretty narrow," Andretti recalled. "There was maybe three inches on
each side of his tire going through there. I was throwing up a lot of dust
when he went there. He was all locked up and I was all locked up. He had the
advantage because I was on the inside. If I would have went any more over, I
think, because he was already committed there, we probably would have crashed
and I wasn't going to do that."
The race began in a much gentler fashion with polesitter Dario Franchitti
pacing the field for 76 of the first 79 laps before his brakes locked,
spinning him sideways across the exit of Turn Three. Sitting broadside in the
course, it was only a matter of time before he got collected by someone.
"What can I say? I just can't believe it," a stunned Franchitti said. "The
brakes were a worry all day. We had a similar problem in qualifying
yesterday."
Arnd Meier was the first car through the accident scene, and he dodged to
the right and passed cleanly. Michael Andretti was the next car through and he
went to the left. Although he was able to pass the stalled Franchitti for the
lead, his right rear tire contacted Franchitti's car fueling concerns that the
tire may have been punctured.
Zanardi's Target Chip Ganassi Teammate Jimmy Vasser came through next, only to
find the nose of Franchitti's car in his path.
"Tom Anderson [team manager] told me it was in Turn Three and I saw the
yellows. I just carried a little too much speed into there when I was rolling
across the concrete and I was on the concrete patch when we saw Dario."
Chip Ganassi came onto the radio for Zanardi and screamed "Go Right, Go
Right!", sending Zanardi cleanly past the accident scene and into second
place.
"Chip really won the race for me today, Alex said. "He came on the radio and
said 'Go Right, Go Right', so I braked a little early and stayed to the right
side and made it through."
Greeting Zanardi in Victory Lane after the race, Ganassi congratulated his
driver with only two words: "Go Right."
Paul Tracy wasn't as fortunate as Vasser and Andretti as he followed Zanardi
through, planting the nose of his Team KOOL Green Reynard firmly into the side
of his teammate's car.
"The marshal's weren't waving the flags very urgently, and they weren't
motioning me to move to the right," Tracy said after the race.
Finishing fourth in his final run was Bobby Rahal. Always a force on the
streets of Toronto, Rahal did little to disappoint the crowd that greeted him
enthusiastically before the race.
"It is a little sad to leave this place," Rahal said. "It's been good to me
over the years." In 13 starts, Rahal has 10 top-five finishes including a
victory in 1986.
Following his employer across the line in 5th was Bryan Herta. Qualifying
poorly, Herta moved through the field in a spirited charge from right from the
beginning of the race.
"The car was much better this morning in warm-up so I though we could move up
from 17th," Herta said. "The marbles were horrible today. It was so easy to
slide off the groove and lose a bunch of positions. We were able to run a
smart race by getting good restarts and good pit stops."
One driver that did not have a good pit stop was Tasman's Tony Kanaan.
Pitting on lap 62 while running 5th, Kanaan started to exit the pits while
the crew was still fighting to disconnect the fueling rig.
"The refueling equipment jammed and I was told to go before we were ready,"
Kanaan recalled. A fire erupted when fuel began to flow from the damaged fuel
hose, sending crew and firefighters into action. Kanaan was extracted from the
car and sprayed with water as he danced beside the car, apparently on fire.
"It is a shame this happened but the main thing is that everyone is okay," he
said.
Robby Gordon made his presence felt by passing 10 cars on the opening lap.
"We kind of caught some folks sleeping," Gordon remarked, "but with the
package we have we need to do things like that."
His Arciero-Wells stablemate Max Papis finished 8th. The result marks his
third straight points-paying finish and the best Toyota-powered finish on a
road course.
Two other front-runner that departed early from the race were Gil de Ferran
and Christian Fittipaldi. Exiting the pits on lap 25, de Ferran struck a tire
from the pitting car of Fittipaldi just ahead.
"We had a good stop and as I pulled out, the car kind of swung out and touched
Christian's left rear. I don't know if it was the wheel on the car or the one
they were going to put on."
The contact damaged the right-rear wishbone on de Ferran's car, ending his
day.
"I had no idea that de Ferran had run into my left rear tire," Fittipaldi
said. "The jacks went down and I took off and noticed a small vibration
immediately in the rear of the car. Then I noticed my crew waving at me which
is when I stopped and they pulled me back into my stall."
With the win, the fourth in a row which ties the CART record set in 1990 by
Al Unser Jr., Zanardi extends his PPG Cup points lead to 69 points over his
teammate Vasser who moves into second.
"I'm not going to apologize for the luck I'm having," Zanardi said. "I mean,
we're not up here playing cards, we're trying to win races. Things are just
going my way."
"Jimmy said he's going to follow me into the restroom to see if he can find
gold coins and diamonds in the place where I just sat."

Fisichella takes pole in the wet
[Austrian Grand Prix - Qualifying - 25 July 98-14h00 CET] Today's
single Qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix turned out to be
one of the most exciting sessions for a long time. After two Free
Practice sessions in the dry, one hour before Qualifying the heavens
opened, it rained and rained and rained. Despite rumours that the
session would be delayed, it got under way on time at 13h00 CET. Well
the session started, but nothing else did. For 27 minutes the teams
waited. Most drivers were kitted up and sitting in their cars - most
had no wheels on. Some were taking the opportunity to be interviewed.
The rain continued to pour.
First out on track was Takagi, followed closely by Hill. Half way
around the flooded track Takagi spins, Hill passes and continues on to
set the first lap of the session, 1m 35.618s. Takagi came in 6s slower
and then spun off into the gravel. They returned to the pits as
Verstappen came out. He also took a trip over the gravel, but returned
to the track.
40 minutes into the session Alesi had just crossed the line and became
only the 10th driver to record a time so far. At this moment the pole
was at 1m 34.457s and the top ten were: (1) M.Schumacher, (2)
Frentzen, (3) R.Schumacher, (4) Hill, (5) Alesi, (6) Verstappen, (7)
Takagi, (8) Diniz, (9) Irvine, (10) Tuero.
M.Schumacher had set his pole in the 39th minute. Here's what happend
to it next:
41m - 1m 33.843s - J. Alesi
42m - 1m 33.088s - E. Irvine
42m - 1m 31.697s - M. Schumacher
44m - 1m 30.630s - M. Schumacher
59m - 1m 30.317s - J. Alesi
61m - 1m 29.598s - G. Fisichella
As a dry line started to appear, positions were changing with every
lap. In the next 5 minutes Villeneuve moved into 6th, Alesi took pole,
Irvine took pole, M.Schumacher took pole, Villeneuve took 4th,
R.Schumacher took 4th, Coulthard took 3rd, Hakkinen took 3rd, then
Villeneuve spun off into the gravel and took a bike back to the pits.
In the next 10 minutes Coulthard took 2nd, Herbert took 5th, only 16
cars were within the 107%, Fisichella took 3rd, Nakano retires on the
grass, Villeneuve returns with the spare car, Fisichella crosses the
gravel, Frentzen takes 2nd, Hill takes 5th, R.Schumacher takes 2nd,
and Panis crosses the gravel.
With 5 minutes of the session left the top ten were: (1) M.Schumacher,
(2) R.Schumacher, (3) Frentzen, (4) Coulthard, (5) Fisichella, (6)
Hill, (7) Irvine, (8) Hakkinen, (9) Herbert, (10) Alesi.
In the last 5 minutes M.Schumacher runs over the grass, Barrichello
takes 3rd, Verstappen takes 3rd, Diniz takes 5th, Alesi takes 2nd,
Fisichella takes 3rd, Barrichello takes 2nd, Hakkinen takes 4th and
Alesi takes pole.
At 14h00 the flag comes out to signal the end of the session. The cars
left on track complete their final lap. Frentzen takes 5th, Hakkinen
takes 3rd, Fisichello takes pole and Salo takes 6th.
The final top ten are: (1) Fisichella, (2) Alesi, (3) Hakkinen, (4)
M.Schumacher, (5) Barrichello, (6) Salo, (7) Frentzen, (8) Irvine, (9)
R.Schumacher, (10) Panis. Poor David Coulthard ended up 14th on the
grid behind Diniz and in front of Hill. World Champion Jacques
Villeneuve is 11th.
Performance around the track was very varied: Alesi was quickest
through the first section, but R.Schumacher had the fastest exit speed
(254kph). For the second section it was Fisichella and Hakkinen
(249kph) and for the third it was M.Schumacher and Hakkinen (253kph).
One second covers the first 4 places and two seconds covers the first
7.
In the interview afterwards a glowing Fisichella discussed his first
F1 pole. He said that he had been happy with his dry setup and not
very confident about a good position when he saw the rain in
qualifying. He said that he likes the rain and is hoping for the same
conditions in the race. When asked about having Hakkinen and
Schumacher behind him, he said he was not worried as he had the pole.
He was very happy for Alesi to also be on the front row and after some
jovial prompting from Mika, he said he was also happy for Hakkinen's
third.
Alesi said he was very happy to have scored the best ever grid
position for Sauber, especially after the problems they had had in the
British Grand Prix.
When Hakkinen was asked if he was glad to be third with M.Schumacher
and Coulthard behind him, he said no, he always wants to be first. He
said that the conditions had been much worse than he had expected and
he found it difficult to find the confidence for hard braking in the
corners. When asked if he felt he could overtake the two in front, he
said overtaking was always difficult in Formula 1 and against the
experienced Alesi and Fisichella on a high from his pole position, he
felt it would be very difficult tomorrow.

Tragedy Strikes At Michigan
THREE KILLED, SIX INJURED
AS TIRE FLIES INTO TURN FOUR GRANDSTAND AT MICHIGAN
What might be described as the best Champ car race in the history of the
Michigan Speedway will also be remembered for a tragic accident, which
claimed the lives of three race fans and injured six others.
On Lap 175, Paul Tracy passed Adrian Fernandez on the inside, between
Turns three and four. When Tracy got around, the pass took away the air on
the front of the Fernandez's car, causing him to move up into the marbles
on the race track and hit the wall.
The contact caused the right front tire to fly straight up into the air,
along with debris. The tire and debris flew over the 15 feet of wall and
debris fencing, some 10 to 12 rows deep into the grandstand.
Michigan Speedway Medical Director Dr. Greg Baumann reported three
fatalities and six other spectator injuries in the Turn 4 grandstands from
the airborne wheel and other debris.
Dr. Baumann noted that two of the victims died instantly from their
injuries, while the third was transported to the Michigan Speedway care
center, located behind the grandstands, and died after resucitation
efforts.
It was the first fan fatalities at the track since 1969, but the first
since Penske Speedways purchased the facility in the eearly 1970s.
Fernandez sustained bruises to the insides of both knees. He was treated
with ice and released.
"Paul (Tracy) came to the inside and took my air in Turn Three," Fernandez
explained. "The whole car lost downforce and I just went up into the gray
and hit the wall."
The tragedy dampened the spirits of the drivers and participants.
"I can only express the deep sorrow felt by everyone within the CART
community," said CART Chairman and CEO Andrew Craig. "There is, of course,
nothing that we can say or do that in any way will reduce the deep sadness
felt by the families and friends of the victims, but, on behalf of all of
us at CART, I extend my heartfelt sympathies."
