Hajduk Split, Osijek seal UEFA Cup berths in Croatia
FC Croatia to reach double
ZAGREB, May 10 (Reuters) - Hajduk Split and Osijek clinched places
in next season's UEFA Cup after Sunday's action in the Croatian premier
league playoffs. Hajduk beat fourth-placed Hrvatski Dragovoljac 1-0 at
home to finish second while Osijek held onto third place ahead of Hrvatski
on goal difference despite losing 4-2 at champions Croatia Zagreb.
In the relegation battle, Mladost 127 Suhopolje will have to play-off
against the second-placed team from the second division after losing 1-0 at
Varteks Varazdin to finish second from bottom above already doomed Samobor.
Croatia's victory meant they finished 13 points clear at the top,
and remained well on course for a third consecutive league and cup double.
They lead Varteks 1-0 after the first leg of the Croatian Cup final earlier
this week. Varteks will compete in the European Cup Winners' Cup next season
even if they fail to overturn the deficit this coming Wednesday because
Croatia have qualified for the European Cup as champions.
VARAZDIN, Croatia, May 6 (Reuters) - Croatia Zagreb moved one step closer
to a third consecutive league and cup double when they beat struggling
Varteks 1-0 in the first leg of the Croatian Cup final on Wednesday.
Ten days after securing their third league title in as many years,
Croatia had little trouble defeating Varteks Varazdin and look set
to lift the cup after the second leg in Zagreb on May 14.
Croatia's goal came eight minutes from time through teenaged attacker
Mihajlo Mihic, a second-half substitute. Mihic received a perfect pass
on the right from Australian international Mark Viduka and put the ball
away from a sharp angle with all the poise of an experienced striker.
Croatia had more possession than injury-ridden Varteks, whose survival
in the top flight depends on their result in Sunday's final league round,
but their forwards missed several good chances.
Silvio Maric, one of Zagreb's seven prospective World Cup squad members,
came close twice -- with one shot brushing the post -- but was substituted
in the second half. Midfielder Robert Prosinecki, back in the team after
two months out with a calf injury, had a clear shot on the goal from 20
metres in the 28th minute but saw it saved. Zagreb had to do without
libero Goran Juric and full-back Dario Simic and Varteks were unlucky
not to score after some messy defending by Croatia. Tomislav Rukavina,
who replaced Juric, made an important save in the 23rd minute when he
stopped the ball on the line with goalkeeper Drazen Ladic already beaten.

Atletico sign midfielder Njegus from Red Star
MADRID, May 8 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid have signed Crvena Zvezda
(Red Star) Belgrade midfielder Zoran Njegus, one of the players requested
by new coach Arrigo Sacchi, the Spanish sports daily Marca said on Friday.
"We've made a great signing...Njegus is a new Atletico player," Atletico
Secretary General Miguel Angel Gil Marin was quoted as telling Marca.
No one at Atletico was available to confirm the report.
Sacchi, former AC Milan and Italy coach, looks set to revolutionise the
Atletico squad left behind by Radomir Antic, who will leave the club at
the end of the season. One of the players likely to be affected by the
changes is Jose Luis Caminero, who led Spain in the 1994 World Cup.
Reports on Friday suggested that the midfielder would try to see out
the year remaining on his contract with Atletico.
Atletico are also understood to have offered Cup finalists Mallorca
1.2 billion pesetas ($8 million) for midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron.
Atletico took a preferential option on Valeron when they loaned
Santi Ezquerro to Mallorca earlier this season.

BUCHAREST, May 11 (Reuters) - Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu called up
23 players for a nine-day training camp in Poiana Brasov, 180 km (120 miles)
north of Bucharest on Monday.
Iordanescu will name his final 22-man World Cup squad on June 2 -- deadline
day. After the training camp, Romania's preparations continue with Bucharest
friendlies against Paraguay on June 3 and Moldova on June 6. The Romanian
Soccer Federation is trying to arrange another warm up match against
Algeria, on May 30.

Bosnian striker Elvir Balic from fellow Turkish side Bursaspor for nine
million dollars, local media said on Tuesday.
The Milliyet newspaper said the highly-rated Balic, who scored 12 goals
in the Turkish championship this season, wanted to join Fenerbahce so he

Frustrated Bilic attacks Everton

LIVERPOOL, England, May 12 (Reuters) - Everton defender Slaven Bilic on
Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the club just days after they avoided
relegation from the English premier league.
The frustrated Croatian international claimed promises he was made by club
officials had not been kept and said he felt let down by the Merseysiders'
failure to attract big-name signings over the last 12 months.
Bilic moved to Goodison Park last summer from then-struggling West Ham
in a 4.5 million pound ($7.4 million) deal, believing his days of battling
against the drop were over. But Everton spent most of the season fighting
relegation and 29-year-old Bilic even suffered the indignity of being left
on the bench for the crunch game against Coventry on Sunday, which Everton
drew 1-1 to preserve their top flight status.
"I was made promises before I joined the club," Bilic told the Liverpool
Echo newspaper. "(Former manager) Joe Royle told me he was going to buy
(Italian internationals) Dino Baggio and Pierluigi Casiraghi.
He wanted me to be the leader on the field with the three of us
as the spine of the team.
"He said he was very close to completing the deals and I said 'fine' and
shook hands on joining Everton. "I could have pulled out of the transfer
when he left the club but the chairman told me even though Joe had gone
it would be the same story. That was what I wanted to hear and the deal
was done. "I was told many things but I could see straight away at the
start of the season it wasn't going to be like that. I thought to myself
it is not happening here the way I was told. "Instead of moaning about
it I set my mind on doing my best and leaving it until it was all over
before saying what I felt." Bilic said he was also shocked to see the club
sell internationals Gary Speed and Andy Hinchcliffe this season without
bringing in replacements. He added: "It is not my job to buy and sell
players, but why sell your best players when you most need them most?
It was unbelievable we didn't sign anyone before the transfer deadline
to replace them. "One reason it went wrong was because our squad was not
big enough, especially when Duncan Ferguson, myself or someone else was
suspended." Bilic's outburst could bring about an abrupt end to his short
Everton career. He is expected to be the target of several Spanish and
Italian clubs in the summer and manager Howard Kendall may be ready to
let the combative defender go. The pair have had several run-ins during
the season over tactics and are said not to agree on footballing issues.

LONDON, May 12 (Reuters) - Striker Andy Cole, who scored 25 goals for
Manchester United this season, was left out of the England squad of 30
named by coach Glenn Hoddle on Tuesday for the final pre-World Cup warm-ups
against Saudi Arabia (May 23), Morocco (May 27) and Belgium (May 29).
His omission realistically means he has no chance of making the final
World Cup squad of 22 to be named by Hoddle on June 2.
There was also no place for Matt Le Tissier of Southampton, or Chris Sutton
of Blackburn, who lost his chance of a place in the World Cup plans after
refusing to play for England in a B international two months ago.
Hoddle also overlooked the claims of Arsenal's much improved Ray Parlour,
who was included among the substitutes for England's last match against
Portugal, but did not play in the team.
But there was a recall for Tottenham's Darren Anderton who has only just
regained fitness after missing most of the season.
Jamie Redknapp of Liverpool is included in the 30-man party but his place
depends on him being fully fit after being injured two weeks ago.

World Cup-Hoddle helpless to stop Gazza smoking

LONDON, May 12 (Reuters) - England coach Glenn Hoddle admitted on Tuesday
he is helpless to prevent maverick midfielder Paul Gascoigne smoking during
the World Cup. Speaking about the Middlesbrough player's cigarette habit
for the first time, Hoddle told a news conference: "I'm certainly not going
to tell him to give up in the middle of the World Cup. That could do more
harm than good. "Paul has been smoking since his time in Rome (1992-95).
All that concerns me is his performance.
"All I've ever asked him is to meet me halfway, which he has done while
I've been in charge of the team. "Ossie Ardiles was on 40 cigarettes a day
when Argentina won the World Cup in 1978. "I will say that you won't see
any England players smoking in public during the World Cup," added Hoddle,
who on Tuesday named Gascoigne in a 30-man squad for England's final three
World Cup warm-up matches.
Hoddle also revealed that he recently witnessed Italian Gianluca Vialli
smoking in a top restaurant despite the Chelsea player-manager's highly
publicised decision to kick the habit. Tottenham's French winger David
Ginola and former Brazilian captain Socrates are other high-profile
footballers who enjoy a cigarette. Since he burst onto the international
scene during the 1990 World Cup, Gazza has been accused of drunkenness
and admitted hitting his wife Sheryl during a marital row. Hoddle's stance
is the latest example of the England coach publicly defending Gascoigne,
whom he sees as central to his side's chances of success in France.
He picked Gazza and sent him to see a faith healer after the player
admitted hitting his wife, despite the protests of womens' groups.

Petkovic to coach J-League's Avispa Fukuoka
TOKYO, May 12 (Reuters) - Avispa Fukuoka, bottom of Japan's J-League,
on Tuesday named Yugoslav national assistant coach Ilija Petkovic
as their new head coach. Petkovic, 52, was capped 46 times as a player
and is now one of two assistant coaches for Yugoslavia, who contest the
World Cup finals in France next month.
Avispa's previous head coach Ryohei Suzuki will stay on as a coach.
Avispa, in their second year in the J-League, have won only once in
12 league games this season.

The Wearsiders are at Wembley after a tense but very open game at
The Stadium Of Light tonight. The first half saw Sunderland turn a deficit
into a lead in 45 one sided minutes. Johnston had a header & a shot over,
Kevin Phillips could have had a hat trick, striking three efforts wide,
the same could be said for Niall Quinn who saw a shot loop into Tracey`s
hand, the keeper then produced a brilliant save from the Irishman`s header
before saving a somewhat easier effort. Johnston also walloped the post.
In amonst all that were two goals. Midway through the half Johnston fired
in a cross that Nicky Marker could only deflected in off the post for an
own goal and on 38 minutes following a desperate scramble Nick Summerbee
smashed a shot goalwards and leading scorer Kevin Phillips deflected the
ball home to equal Brian Clough`s club record of 34 goals in a season.
United had to improve in the second half and eventually they did but only
after sub Greame Stuart made an appearance and it was the ex Everton man
who produced a fine save from Peres, although the Sunderland keeper did
better still minutes later when he somehow pulled off a double save
from Paul Devlin`s piledriver and Dean Saunders rebounded effort.
Late on the game lost all shape as both sides broke forward but after
two minutes of injury time the whistle went and Sunderland are a game
away from the Premiership.

Soccer-World Cup-Brazil drop injured Marcio Santos from squad
TERESOPOLIS, Brazil, May 13 (Reuters) - Defender Marcio Santos was
dropped from the Brazil World Cup squad on Wednesday because of a pulled
thigh muscle, team doctor Lidio Toledo said.
``It's not a serious injury but he will not be able to train with the
ball for two or three weeks,'' Toledo said.
``We need all our players to be match fit so we can train the team as a
whole and for this reason we had to drop him.''
Marcio Santos, 28, suffered the injury early in Sunday's Paulista
championship final, in which he was playing for Sao Paulo against
Corinthians. He pulled up as he chased Corinthians striker Mirandinha
and limped off injured. Santos, a regular in Brazil's 1994 World Cup
winning team, had been one of the major surprises when coach Mario Zagallo
named Brazil's squad was named last week.
He had not played for Brazil since an unhappy performance in a 4-2
defeat by Norway in May last year. But although Zagallo had not picked
him after that, he said Santos had been recalled thanks to his excellent
form with Sao Paulo. A replacement for Santos, who has 38 full caps,
was due to be named later on Wednesday.
Andre Cruz of AC Milan, Cleber of Palmeiras and Santos's Sao Paulo team
mate Bordon were among the favourites to cash in on his bad luck.

Vialli takes Chelsea into the big time

STOCKHOLM, May 14 (Reuter) - Gianluca Vialli is not satisfied with Chelsea
winning the European Cup Winners' Cup. He wants more and better things.
"What we are trying do at the club is to improve year after year,"
the Italian player-manager said after Chelsea beat VfB Stuttgart 1-0 at the
Rasunda stadium on Wednesday night. "Next season we will try to do better.
We want to win the premier league. This is our target."
A premier league win would be followed by a coveted European Cup place
and Vialli knows how good it feels to win that competition.
The former Italy striker lifted the European Cup with Juventus before
joining Chelsea under Ruud Gullit in 1996. Before that he had won the
Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup with Sampdoria and Juventus.
For Chelsea fans, such riches were beyond their wildest dreams a year ago.
Since then they have seen their multinational side pick up the F.A Cup,
the League Cup and now the Cup Winners' Cup.
For a club which has always promised much and delivered little, success
is heady stuff. Chelsea, used to playing second fiddle to the big names
in the English league such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal,
had not won a major trophy since they beat Real Madrid to claim the same
cup 27 years ago. Vialli, a manager for just three months, is determined
to change the 'second-rate' mentality. "It will be a great challenge,
but we will be ready for that. We've proved in Europe we are a great team."
Vialli was thrust into management after the shock sacking of Gullit, who
had pulled Chelsea from obscurity to a win in the F.A.Cup. When he went
after failing to agree a new contract, Chelsea were already in the quarter-
finals of the Cup Winners' Cup and the semifinals of the League Cup.
His successor, a complete novice, had to keep his head and the team on
course. "I'm a beginner. I know that," says Vialli. "I'm not kidding when
I say I learn something new about managing every day. I talk to the staff
all the time and I take their advice," he said. With Vialli on the pitch
against Stuttgart it was his assistant Graham Rix who made the crucial
substitution that brought Gianfranco Zola on to score the winning goal
just 30 seconds later. "Rix wanted to bring Gianfranco on and I said don't
even think about taking me off so he put him on for (Tore Andre) Flo,"
Vialli said. Choosing who to leave out in a large squad of enthusiastic
players who all feel they deserve a place is one of the difficulties of
management. "It is never easy when you have got four or five good strikers,
but you have to follow your feelings and make the decision."
"I don't enjoy the pressure all the time but I try to use my experience
to cope with it. The secret is never to be satisfied. If you are satisfied
you never win. "When I am satisfied I will hang up my boots and my whistle."
Liverpool striker Fowler "out until Christmas"
LONDON, May 14 - Liverpool's England international striker Robbie Fowler
has been ruled out of action until the end of the year, the club said
on Thursday. Fowler damaged knee cartilage in a collision with Everton's
Norwegian goalkeeper Thomas Myhre during the Merseyside derby in February.
He did not play again all season and hopes of an August return have now
been dashed. "There were reports that he had visions of playing pre-season,
but he certainly won't be playing before Christmas. That is the estimation
at the moment," said Liverpool physio Mark Leather.
BROLIN RELEASED BY PALACE

Crystal Palace have released Swedish international Tomas Brolin
in the first stage of a summer clear out at Selhurst Park.
The former Leeds and Parma star joined Palace in January on a short-term
contract in an attempt to revive his flagging career in the Premiership.
But he was unable to recapture his form or fitness and failed to score
in 15 appearances for the Eagles and did not figure in the last three
games of the season when relegation was confirmed.
Palace have also released four other players, Patricio Billio who joined
on a non-contract basis and youngsters Rory Ginty, Richard Kennedy and
David Stevens. Former England coach Terry Venables has already confirmed
he will be Palace's manager in the First Division next season if Mark
Goldberg completes his takeover.

CORDOBA, Argentina, May 14 - Gabriel Batistuta, ignored by Argentina
for most of last year, scored a hat-trick as his country blasted
Bosnia 5-0 in a World Cup warm-up match on Thursday.
Batistuta and midfielder Ariel Ortega put on an awesome display which
Argentina's World Cup opponents would be wise not to ignore. Ortega,
who has astonishingly been left on the substitute's bench for most
of this season at Spanish club Valencia, set up Batitusta's first
two goals and also grabbed one for himself.
Batistuta's took his national team goal tally to 41, an Argentine record.
He opened his account after just four minutes, with a left-foot shot from
a chance created by Ortega, and fired home his second from 12 metres
after once again being set up by Ortega in the 23rd minute.
Ten minutes into the second half, Claudio Lopez, who scored the winner
as Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro last month, crossed from
the left for Javier Zanetti to blast home the third. Ortega's invention
was rewarded on the hour with his goal before Batistuta completed his
hat-trick with a 79th minute header. Batitusta had been left out of the
team for most of last year for what coach Daniel Passarella described as
tactical reasons, although many felt personal differences were at work.
Argentina, who have two more home friendlies to come before leaving for
France, have won their last three games without conceding a goal.
Bosnia, who have not qualified for the World Cup, caused their defence a
few problems on Thursday but were otherwise out of their depth on their
third visit to South America since they began playing international soccer.
They have yet to score a goal on the continent.

i tehnički doteraniji fudbal mogu da odgovaraju Savi.. naravno,
samo ako on sam sa sobom bude načisto pa počne da igra ko čovek.

PARMA, Italy, May 14 (Reuters) - Italian first division side Parma sacked
coach Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday for failing to improve on last season.
``I'm upset about this decision by the management but I have always said
the company has the right to judge the coach's performance,'' Ancelotti
told his players. ``Evidently it was decided that the results were not
good enough. It's right for Parma to make this choice. I take note.''
Five months ago, club owner Calisto Tanzi said publicly Ancelotti had the
management's ``unconditional support and should feel very much at ease.''
Parma were on the brink of qualifying for the Italian Cup final but were
eliminated after conceding a late goal in their second-leg match against
AC Milan. They are now lying fourth in Serie A with one match left to play.
Last year, they finished second and qualified for the European Cup,
which they have failed to do this year.
Ancelotti, who has been tipped to go to Udinese next season or join Milan
if Fabio Capello leaves the San Siro, said: ``I could have offers from

Last chance for AC Milan to salvage sad season

ROME, May 15 (Reuters) - AC Milan's dismal year could be rekindled on
Saturday's final afternoon of the serie A season if they can overcome
Fiorentina in Florence. At the same time, the three-way battle between
Atalanta Bergamo, Piacenza and Brescia to avoid the drop will be decided.
Lecce and Napoli are already down to serie B. A victory for Milan could keep
open the back door to Europe in the shape of a place in the InterToto Cup,
which could in turn lead to a UEFA Cup berth this summer.
With all the major issues at the top end of Serie A already settled,
the only suspense concerns the relegation scrap and the allocation of the
second of two InterToto places, with only Milan and Bologna in the running.
Juventus, the champions, and runners-up Internazionale Milan will play in
next season's European Cup competition while Lazio will be in the
Cup Winners' Cup. Udinese, Parma, AS Roma and Fiorentina have all qualified
directly for the UEFA Cup. Eighth placed Sampdoria have already made sure of
one of the InterToto places. Bologna are on 45 points and 10th-placed Milan,
who failed to qualify for Europe last season, on 44.
Bologna are at home to Lazio and fancied against a team short of motivation
at the end of a season which saw them win the Italian Cup and lose the UEFA
Cup final to Inter. But if Bologna come unstuck, Milan could sneak in.
For Milan coach Fabio Capello and for several players, Saturday's game could
be their last for a club that has dominated in Italy and Europe for much of
the last decade but which is currently deep in crisis.
Widespread media speculation has suggested that Udinese coach Alberto
Zaccheroni will be appointed coach of Milan early next week.
Udinese's German striker Oliver Bierhoff has confirmed that he will be
joining Milan next season, becoming the first of a new wave that may sweep
away Brazilian Leonardo, Frenchman Ibrahim Ba, German Christian Ziege and
Dutchman Patrick Kluivert. Milan will be close to full strength with
Liberian George Weah partnered by Maurizio Ganz in attack and with Leonardo,
Ba, Demetrio Albertini and Croat Zvonimir Boban in midfield.
Fiorentina, with nothing to gain or lose from the match, will be without
their inspirational Argentine captain, Gabriel Batistuta who is in World Cup
training. In the absence of Batistuta, who scored a hat-trick against Bosnia
in a friendly in Argentina on Thursday, Brazilian Edmundo, Belgian Luis
Oliveira and Domenico Morfeo lead the Fiorentina attack.
When the sides last met in January, Fiorentina ran out easy 2-0 winners
at the San Siro in Milan. The Serie A programme for the final day has been
brought forward to Saturday because Juventus asked for an extra day to
prepare for next week's Champions Cup final clash with Spanish side Real
Madrid. Juventus are away to Atalanta, who are on 31 points and look likely
to go down. Brescia, who travel to Parma, have 32 and Piacenza, away to
Lecce, 34. The three strugglers have asked for all the final games to be
played at the same hour on the same day.

World Cup-bound Americans held by Macedonia

SAN JOSE, California, May 16 - The United States was held to a
disappointing goalless draw by Macedonia Saturday in a friendly
the Americans hoped would help them prepare for their clash with
Yugoslavia next month in the World Cup finals.
Playing without several key players -- injured midfielders Claudio Reyna,
Ernie Stewart and Frankie Hejduk, as well as striker Eric Wynalda --
the U.S. was thwarted by a tough Macedonian team that had failed to reach
the finals in France.
Striker Brian McBride had four clear chances to score and missed them
all, while Cobi Jones twice narrowly missed with a flick over the bar
and a shot cleared off the line by midfielder Toni Micevski.
And Joe-Max Moore nearly scored in the final minute when he lunged at a
loose ball to push it past Macedonian goalkeeper Petar Milosevski and Roy
Wegerle failed to make contact as it rolled along the goalline and past
the post. Coach Steve Sampson had scheduled the friendly against the former
Yugoslav republic in an effort to give his players a look at the style of
play they are likely to face in their first- round World Cup match against
Yugoslavia on June 25 in Nantes.
But what he may have learned is that the Americans will have to penetrate
a solid defense more than they did Saturday at Spartan Stadium.
In the final warm-up matches before leaving for France, where they will
face Germany, Iran and Yugoslavia in the first round, the Americans will
play Kuwait in Portland, Oregon next week and then face fellow World Cup
finalists Scotland in Washington, D.C. on May 30.
Last month, the Americans beat Austria in a match against opponents
Sampson felt would play like Germany, while he feels Kuwait will play
like Iran. On a chilly night, the Americans looked disorganized in the
first half and it took a diving save by goalkeeper Kasey Keller in the
15th minute to keep out a low left-foot shot from Georgi Hristov,
who played this season for Barnsley in the English Premier League.
Three times in the half the ever-dangerous McBride had chances to put the
Americans ahead, but he shot over the bar from less than 10 yards in the
14th minute, and had two flying headers flash wide.
A third header in the second half was inches off target but the tall blond
striker came off in the 63rd minute after being injured in a clash of heads
with Macedonian defender Ljupco Milosevic, who also was injured.
The match was the second part of a double-header in which the home
team San Jose Clash earlier beat the Miami Fusion 2-0 in a Major League
Soccer match.

Ajax crush PSV 5-0 for sixth Dutch double
ROTTERDAM, May 17 - Ajax Amsterdam won the Dutch Cup and their sixth
league and cup double by demolishing PSV Eindhoven 5-0 in Sunday's final.
Ajax scored through Nigerian Tijjani Babangida, Georgian Shota Arveladze
and a hat-trick from Finn Jari Litmanen to lay to rest the ghost of PSV
who Ajax had not beaten for three years.
A thin cup final crowd had to wait until the 28th minute for the deadlock
to be broken when Babangida dispossessed PSV defender Andre Ooijer deep
in the PSV half to shoot into the corner past a diving Ronald Wattereus.
Litmanen made it 2-0 in the 38th minute and the last half hour turned
into a rout. The Finn found the net again in the 61st and 84th while
Arveladze scored in the 79th. Right back Ooijer had a nightmare day,
getting sent off for a tackle from behind in the 75th minute which
earned him his second yellow card.
Arveladze's goal was perhaps the finest of the Ajax batch. The Georgian
shot from some distance after he had spotted the PSV keeper off his line.
Ajax were rarely bothered by PSV attacks, except for a brief spell towards
the end of the first half, but their keeper Edwin van der Sar parried two
fine Luc Nilis drives effectively.
"We had the match more under control... PSV came back, but we held off
an equaliser," said Ajax defender Danny Blind of the early stages, mindful
of the team's 4-3 loss to PSV in December.
By contrast, PSV's defence struggled throughout to contain Ajax's varied
attack with Jaap Stam clearly missing a settled centre back partner.
PSV's problems deepened after Ooijer's dismissal. The departure of both
Stam, to Manchester United, and Arthur Numan, to Glasgow Rangers, at the
end of the season does not bode well for PSV's future at the back.
The match also marked the farewell of PSV's Phillip Cocu and coach Dick
Advocaat. Advocaat, who becomes Glasgow Rangers boss in July, had coveted
the trophy as a parting shot and was disappointed that his charges
converted none of their first half chances.
"We created eight 100 percent chances. It could have been 3-1 or 3-2
(at half-time)... I don't want to name names, but our defence did not
function well," he said. Ajax were crowned champions a month ago and
the double is their first since 1983.
Their future appears brighter. Dane Michael Laudrup played his last club
game and a question mark remains over the future of midfielder Ronald de
Boer, but, in Georgi Kinkladze, Ajax have at least one replacement.
Rotterdam's De Kuip stadium may have also have said a farewell to top
football for some time. The city mayor moved the kickoff from early
evening to afternoon because of security fears, angering the Dutch F.A.
who said they are looking at Amsterdam or Eindhoven for next season's
final. The stadium was less than half full partly because of the time
change. "Terrible" was the verdict of Ajax coach Morten Olsen.
However, in part vindication of the mayor's decision, police had to
intervene in a number of skirmishes, charging some 250 Feyenoord fans
near the ground and making 13 arrests before the match.

Jeste. A Berlusconi je čim je to čuo zvao i nudio mu duplo. ;))) Kao kad
je meni neki tip nudio ('93) da mu prodam 100 DEM upravo pošto sam prodao

Ti čobani su jedan od retkih klubova u Španiji koji u poslednje 3
godine mogu da zasmetaju Realu i Barseloni, gde god se utakmica
igrala.
Problem Betisa nisu derbiji, već mali mečevi, jer koliko mogu da
dobiju Barselonu na strani, isto tako mogu da puknu od Logronjesa
kod kuće.

SARAJEVO, May 16 (Reuters) - An extra-time goal from striker Emir Granov
secured Sarajevo a 1-0 victory over Sloboda Tuzla in the Bosnian Cup final
on Saturday. The deadlock was broken by a 113th minute header after an
evenly-fought match. But the winners will not qualify for next season's
European Cup Winners' Cup as UEFA has refused Bosnian teams entry to the
competition because of the faliure of the country's three regional soccer
associations -- Moslem, Croat and Serb -- to agree on a play-off.
However, four teams from the Moslem and two from the Croat league will
play-off for one place in each of the preliminary rounds of the European
and UEFA Cups.
Croatia Zagreb complete double again
ZAGREB, May 14 (Reuters) - Croatia Zagreb won the Croatian Cup and secured
their third consecutive league and cup double on Thursday with a 2-1 second
leg victory over Varteks Varazdin. Croatia had won the first leg 1-0.
Marko Topic surprised Croatia by scoring in 38th minute but the home team,
playing only occasionally at full steam, levelled through Australian-born
Marko Viduka in 54th. Varteks, who only narrowly avoided relegation this
season, missed several good opportunities and Croatia's highly talented
midfielder Silvio Maric dashed their hopes with a well taken goal seven
minutes from time. Croatia go for the European Cup next season while
Varteks will compete in the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Partizan beat Obilic to take Yugoslav Cup
BELGRADE, May 13 (Reuters) - Partizan Belgrade, last season's league
champions, won the Yugoslav Cup for the eighth time by beating city
rivals Obilic 2-0 in the second leg of the final on Wednesday. Obilic,
who could wrap up the league title on Saturday, fielded a weakened line-up
against a Partizan side eager to gain a place in next season's European Cup
Winners' Cup having had to settle for third place in the league. Obilic were
without eight first-choice players due to injuries and suspension after a
goalless draw in the first leg of the final last week. The first goal came
in the 23rd minute when midfielder Goran Trobok provided a fine cross
from the left from which Macedonian international Viktor Trenevski
headed over Obilic goalkeeper Nenad Lukic.
Minutes later police intervened to stop a fight between rival Partizan
fan groups in the southern section of the stadium. Ten minutes into the
second half Trenevski provided the pass from which striker Goran
Obradovic made it 2-0 from close range. With nothing to lose, Obilic opened
up the game and fielded three teeenage substitutes, forcing Partizan's
international goalkeeper Ivica Kralj to make several fine saves.
League newcomers Obilic now look forward to the last round of the Yugoslav

Yugoslav soccer history. They lead Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) Belgrade

Obilic Belgrade are surprise league winners
BELGRADE, May 16 (Reuters) - League newcomers Obilic Belgrade completed
the biggest surprise in the history of Yugoslav soccer by beating former
European champions Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) Belgrade to the league title

by two points as Zvezda lost 2-1 to city rivals Zeleznik.
The two clubs had been neck-and-neck in this season's league race since
December 17, when Obilic beat Zvezda 1-0 away to take a lead they kept
right to the end. Their only league loss this season was at the hands
of 1997 champions Partizan Belgrade, who beat them 2-1 on November 2.
Since then Obilic have won 19 matches and drawn just three.
On Wednesday Partizan beat Obilic 2-0 to take the Yugoslav Cup.
Obilic, formed in 1924 and named after a Serbian mediaeval knight,
had achieved their biggest previous success in 1995, when they reached
the Cup final where they lost to Zvezda. Obilic's tiny 2,500-seat ground
is currently being expanded, but the club plans to play in the European
Cup in one of the bigger stadiums in Belgrade. Both Proleter and Zeleznik
survived in the top division.

World Cup-Gascoigne not sure of place, says Hoddle
LONDON, May 17 (Reuters) - Paul Gascoigne is not guaranteed a place in
England's squad for the World Cup finals, coach Glenn Hoddle said on
Sunday. "He's not 100 percent fit so I can't say at this time he's 100
percent in the squad," Hoddle told BBC Radio.
"At the moment there are 30 players in the squad and I've got to whittle
them down." Gascoigne, who recently joined English first division club
Middlesbrough from Rangers, has struggled with injury for much of the
season and Hoddle is clearly concerned about his fitness with the finals
in France less than a month away. "I think he is falling back a little bit
now," said Hoddle. "He's got to come 50-50 with me and I'm sure if he can

After the unification of Germany, and the dismemberment
of Yugoslavia, it could seem the yugos have become weaker.

nationalities. I think it will be very difficult for Vogts' veterans
to beat the "new" yugoslavian team. And, BTW, very difficult for Argentina

Yugoslav coach sticks to proven players
BELGRADE, May 18 - Yugoslavia coach Slobodan Santrac
kept faith with proven players from the World Cup qualifying campaign
when he named a 26-man provisional squad for the finals on Monday.
"I decided to place my trust in players who have confirmed their form and
their value over a longer period," Santrac said at a news conference in
Belgrade. He said he had trimmed his list from 30 to 26 the previous night.
"Of course there were pressures on me to include this or that player,
but I stress that this list is 100 per cent mine," Santrac said.
He said he regretted having to exclude many younger players, but that they
would be the future of Yugoslav soccer and front line prospects for the
Euro 2000 qualifiers which begin later this year.
But he will give a chance to teenager Dejan Stankovic, who has signed a
record deal with Lazio and who crowned his national debut last month by
scoring twice in a friendly against fellow-qualifiers South Korea.
Although Santrac said earlier he might consider three players from surprise
Yugoslav champions Obilic Belgrade, he has selected only their top scorer,
Zoran Rankovic.
The local talent is completed by goalkeeper Ivica Kralj of Partizan
Belgrade and left winger Perica Ognjenovic of Crvena Zvezda.
The rest are all overseas-based and the only regular to miss out is
injury-plagued defender Risto Vidakovic of Real Betis. But Santrac
said Vidakovic would join the squad in France to boost morale.
"The final 22-man squad will be announced on June 2, but the leeway given
by FIFA will allow us to take all 26 players to the final preparations in
Switzerland and make adjustments as late as June 9," Santrac said.
He said he would decide in Switzerland whether to field two or three
goalkeepers. Asked why the squad appeared to be overly-defensive,
Santrac said he had also been criticised for exactly the opposite.
"As a man who spent his entire career as a striker, my strategy has always
been that attack is the best defence. A team capable of attacking a lot
will not concede many goals -- in contrast to defence-oriented teams,"
said Santrac, the all-time leading goalscorer in the Yugoslav league.
"But a great deal has also been done in 1997 and particularly this year
to consolidate the defensive line," he added.
Santrac said a training camp would be organised on Lake Palic, northern
Yugoslavia, from May 22 until the May 29 Belgrade friendly with Nigeria.
Striker Predrag Mijatovic will join the squad on Sunday following his
appearance for Real Madrid in the European Cup final on Wednesday.
Likewise midfielder Ljubinko Drulovic after the Portuguese Cup final
on Saturday. "Dejan Savicevic's injury seems to have healed completely,
he is training normally," said Santrac.
Referring to media criticism to which he was exposed in the initial stages
of the qualifications, Santrac asked all local reporters to support the
team throughout the final stage.
"Our success is our joint interest, and after the finals are over,
then we can sit down and settle all accounts, especially as regards
my own performance," he said. "The atmosphere in the team is exceptional,
and we should not spoil it in any way," he added.

Prohaska stays loyal to established players

VIENNA, May 18 - Coach Herbert Prohaska stuck by the players who helped
Austria qualify for France '98 when he named his provisional 22-man
World Cup squad on Monday. Prohaska resisted the temptation to include
SV Salzburg midfielder Martin Amerhauser, who appeared in the two recent
friendly defeats against Hungary and the United States. He scored in the
3-2 Hungary defeat but is listed only on the coach's reserve list --
as are Adi Huetter, Herfried Sabitzer, and Dieter Ramusch.
Sabitzer, a forward with first division club Graz AK, lost his place
to twice-capped Mario Haas from city rivals and Austrian league champions
Sturm Graz -- one of six Sturm Graz players in the squad.
Also on the reserve list is Arsenal's number two goalkeeper Alexander
Manninger, who did well for the English double-winners when David
Seaman was injured for two months earlier this year.
AS Roma's Michael Konsel and Franz Wohlfahrt form Germany's VfB Stuttgart
are fighting it out for the first choice goalkeeper spot while Austria
Vienna veteran Wolfgang Knaller is the number three.

Feiersinger was unable to complete the season for his German club due to

"They (Feiersinger and Pfeifenberger) are fit again but they have obviously
have to get back into shape again," Prohaska said. "They may have to train
a bit more than the others." The squad will meet for a training camp in
Lindabrunn on Wednesday and will play friendlies against Tunisia on May 27
and Liechtenstein on June 2, before Prohaska names his final squad.

Bierhoff signs for AC Milan
MILAN, May 18 (Reuters) - Germany striker Oliver Bierhoff will join AC
Milan next season on a four-year contract, the club confirmed on Monday.
Bierhoff leaves Serie A rivals Udinese, where he has spent the last three
years. He ended the 1997-98 season as top scorer in the Italian first
division with 27 league goals. He joins a Milan side in desperate need
of firepower after finishing 10th in the league and missing out on a place
in Europe for the second successive season. The five-times European champions
are likely to shuffle their squad over the summer but Bierhoff could well
team up with their Liberian striker George Weah. Weah's current first-choice
striking partner Patrick Kluivert has had a disappointing first season in
Italy and is reportedly set to leave the San Siro.
Bierhoff played at Hamburg SV and Borussia Moenchengladbach in the
Bundesliga before moving to Italy in 1991 to join Ascoli -- then in Serie A.
He moved to Udinese in 1995 and shot to fame a year later by scoring Germany's

Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas of Real Madrid share the record for
most goals scored in the final -- with a total of seven each. But Puskas
remains the only man to have scored four goals in one final, which he
achieved in 1960 when Real beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3. Di Stefano scored
Madrid's three other goals that night. De Stefano, Puskas (3 goals vs
Benfica in 1962) and Pierino Prati of AC Milan (3 v Ajax in 1969) are
the only players to have scored hat-tricks in the final.

Clarence Seedorf of Real Madrid or Edgar Davids of Juventus will join an
elite band of only eight players to have won the European Cup with two
different clubs if their team triumphs on Wednesday. They played together
in the Ajax team which won the trophy in 1995. Among the eight players
to have achieved the feat is Didier Deschamps of Juventus, who won with
Marseille in 1993 and Juventus in 1996.

Although Real won the first five European Cup finals from 1956 to 1960,
they did not score the first final goal in the competition's history.
That honour fell to Michel Leblond who scored for Stade de Reims who
narrowly lost the first final 4-3 to Real. The first tally in
Wednesday's final will be the 115th goal.

World Cup-Gascoigne launches counter-attack

LONDON, May 19 - England's troubled midfielder Paul Gascoigne launched
a counter-attack on Tuesday against his most bitter enemy --
the headline-hungry English tabloids.
Attacked from all sides for staying up late, drinking, smoking and being
overweight, Gascoigne fought back at an aggressive news conference at
the England training ground. "My health's perfect, mate -- probably a lot
better than yours," the 30-year-old midfielder said at the Bisham Abbey
training ground. But England manager Glenn Hoddle kept up the pressure
on Gascoigne to concentrate on getting fit in time for next month's World
Cup, saying some of his past antics would have earned him the sack if they
had been carried out under Hoddle's regime.
"He knows that if he steps out of line when he is on England duty then there
will be decisions to take. If he had done some of the things with me that he
has done in the past he wouldn't be here now," Hoddle said. "I have told him
forcefully that he must meet me halfway. He needs to be fitter, I would say
he is still 40 per cent away from being match fit."
"While players are with their clubs no England manager can control them.
But if he steps out of line again in the next few weeks he will face some
harsh consequences.
"I don't expect to be seeing him on the front pages between now and the
World Cup. The players will be allowed home for five days after the next
three games and I will be most disappointed to see him in trouble."
Gascoigne is a target for the voracious English tabloids and he frequently
appears to be trying his best to help them out.
The northeasterner was unrepentant on Tuesday after a big night out at the
weekend, saying his only duty was to Hoddle. He said the English media
tried regularly to bring him down. "They did it in 1990, in 1996 (before
the European Championship) and I've no doubt they will do it again this
year. I'm not bothered."
Asked how much he smoked, he snapped back: "It's got nothing to do with
you. I haven't got to prove anyone's wrong. The only person I have to
prove anything to is the coach," Gascoigne added.
On a boiling hot day when England teammates wore tee-shorts,
Gascoigne wrapped himself in a heavy track suit for a training session.
He appeared in good spirits, joking with Liverpool's Steve Macmanaman.
Hoddle defended his decision to stick by his problem midfielder despite
the outcry following Gascoigne's night out with rock legend Rod Stewart
and radio personality Chris Evans, which featured on front pages this week.
The England coach said: "Since he has been with me, I have never had
any problems. He has never let me down while wearing an England shirt
and all of these problems have come while he has been with his club.
"My attitude is that I want him to get fit for the World Cup. He will not
be in certain company while we are in France - unless Rod comes over to
do a little concert."

World Cup-Iran sack coach after 7-1 defeat

TEHRAN, May 20 - Iran sacked Croatian coach Tomislav Ivic on Wednesday
just three weeks before the start of the World Cup finals after the
national team lost 7-1 to Italian club AS Roma.
"Following the crushing defeat of the Iranian national soccer team in
the friendly match against AS Roma on Tuesday night, the Croat head coach
of the team Tomislav Ivic was dismissed and replaced by Jalal Talebi,"
the official news agency IRNA said.
Talebi was a member of the Iranian team in the early 1960s and coached
Indonesia's Olympic team in 1996. He was appointed technical adviser
to the World Cup squad earlier this month, IRNA said.
Ivic, 64, was appointed in January on a six-month contract to succeed
Brazilian Valdeir Vieira, who took Iran to only their second finals by
winning the final World Cup qualifier against Australia in November.
Vieira was only in charge for two months after the previous coach had
been sacked. Ivic coached Paris St Germain, Olympique Marseille and
Ajax Amsterdam in a career which saw him serve as vice-president of
Hajduk Split, the club with which he achieved his first major success
in the 1970s. But Iran were jeered off the field in Tehran after Ivic's
first match -- a 2-0 loss to Hungary -- and the Croatian increasingly
failed to satisfy Iran's soccer-mad fans and its politically charged
soccer federation. Subsequent lacklustre performances by the team in a
tour of France -- they lost their first match 1-0 to first division En
Avant Guingamp -- raised hackles in the media and Ivic found himself
defending his record and tactics on national television.
Last week he predicted Iran would beat either Yugoslavia or Germany in
group F at the finals and said Iran were like a diamond that just needed
to be polished. But Tuesday's defeat was too much for his federation even
though Iran were without midfielder Karim Bagheri and striker Khodadad
Azizi, who play in the Bundesliga. Roma were missing Brazilians Cafu and
Aldair but still led 5-1 at halftime.
Francesco Totti scored twice and Carmine Gautieri a hattrick in the first
45 minutes. Gautieri added a fourth in the 57th minute. Ali Daei of Arminia
Bielefeld scored Iran's only goal, a penalty in the 24th minute.
Federation head Mohsen Safaei Farahani said it decided that, despite Ivic
being an experienced and highly competent coach, he could not show the
necessary "efficiency" in the time available.
"Therefore, we came to the conclusion that in the World Cup he cannot
coach the Iranian team in a satisfactory manner," IRNA quoted Farahani
as saying. It had been decided the national team should be coached by
an Iranian who was more familiar with the players and their morale.
Farahani apologised for Iran's crushing defeat by Roma and said:
"People must rest assured that we will not spare any effort to back up
the national soccer team, a sign of which is replacing the head coach."
Iran's next pre-Cup match is against Inter Milan in Milan on Saturday.
One person who will not be disappointed by Wednesday's news is Ivic's
wife. She was told in January she might as well stay home in Croatia
as he expected to work "like a miner" until after the World Cup.

Casiraghi Ready For Chelsea
Pierluigi Casiraghi's desired switch to Chelsea moved a step closer
when he announced he was leaving Italian Cup winners Lazio.
The 29-year-old, who has been with the Serie A club for five years,
has had enough of keeping the substitutes' bench warm and is now ready
to join the Italian contingent at Stamford Bridge.
Lazio are asking around f6million for the Italy striker,
but Chelsea are thought to have offered less.
"I haven't signed the contract yet and I don't think the two clubs have
reached an agreement yet," said Casiraghi. "It's not 100% sure that I'll
be playing in England, but I think that is how it's going to finish.
I don't fit in with Lazio's plans for the future, so it's only right
that I should make my choice."
Asked what he expects to find at Chelsea, he said: "A friend, Gianluca
Vialli. I've played with him at Juventus and he's a true friend."
He stands to become the fourth Italian at Stamford Bridge, alongside
player-coach Vialli, Roberto Di Matteo and Gianfranco Zola.
