World Cup-Balbo`s surprise call-up snubs Caniggia
BUENOS AIRES, May 30 - AS Roma striker Abel Balbo was flying to Buenos
Aires on Saturday after a surprise call-up by coach Daniel Passarella
as the 22nd and final player on Argentina`s World Cup squad.
Balbo`s inclusion left his rival Claudio Caniggia, one of the stars of
Argentina`s World Cup campaigns in 1990 and 1994, out in the cold.
Balbo, who will be 32 on Monday, is a prolific scorer who has netted
more than 100 goals in Serie A since moving to Italy nine years ago.
But his selection on Friday was a surprise, coming only two days after an
Italian court handed him an eight-month suspended sentence for tax
evasion. He had also been at odds with Passarella during the World Cup
qualifiers after telling the coach he was not happy about flying from
Europe to South America to sit on the substitutes` bench.
Balbo, who was also in Argentina`s last two World Cup finals squads,
has scored 11 times for his country in 35 appearances.

FRANKFURT, May 30 - Two first-half goals by Oliver Bierhoff and a strike
early in the second period from Andreas Moeller gave Germany a 3-0 win
over Colombia. Bierhoff hammered home a volley in the first minute after
the Colombian defence failed to clear a Thomas Haessler cross.
The AC Milan-bound striker added his second in the 16th minute,
pouncing on a loose ball after a Haessler shot hit the post.
Moeller completed Germany's scoring with a close-range shot in the

Na snimku se lepo vidi da ga je lopta pogodila, tj. on nije
bio ni svestan da je postigao gol. Shvatio je to
tek posle nekoliko sekundi.

* sporo delovao. Sve u svemu, za vezivanje pertli Miloševiću

kad se par puta izblamirao. A onda ga je onaj slučajni gol

Kakvo je to prepucavanje Crvena Zvezda - Partizan oko reprezentacije
Ono u redu je navijanje za svoj klub, ali reprezentacija je skup igraca
iz svih nasih klubova.
Ako se vec raspravlja o igri pojedinih igraca npr."Milosevic je debil zato
sto ima majmunsku facu i zato sto je igrao u Partizanu", moje misljenje je
da treba konkretno raspravljati o njegovoj IGRI a ne o izgledu, poreklu iz
kog je kluba itd.. Jer ce ova konferencija postati otprilike mesto za
prepucavanje navijaca, a vec ima konferencija navijaci te se tamo treba
obracunavati.
Mislim da treba sada podrzati ovu reprezentaciju kada ce u Francuskoj
mozda moci da uradi nesto vise !
Prepucavacemo se opet kada pocne prvenstvo...Trenutno je reprezentacija

LONDON, May 31 - England manager Glenn Hoddle has axed Paul Gascoigne
from his 22-man World Cup squad, Sky television reported on Sunday.
Sky News, referring to a media briefing held by F.A. spokesman David
Davies at the training camp in Spain, said the other players left out
were goalkeeper Ian Walker, Phil Neville, Andy Hinchcliffe, Nicky Butt
and striker Dion Dublin.
LONDON, May 31 - England manager Glenn Hoddle took a nation by surprise
and probably ended Paul Gascoigne's chequered international career on
Sunday by sensationally dropping the midfielder from his World Cup squad.
The Sun newspaper, in a Monday edition headlined "Gazza Axed", reported
that Gazza had burst into tears after Hoddle told him he was not going
to France. The 31-year-old Middlesbrough midfielder then left the team's
training camp in southern Spain.
The other five players omitted were less controversial -- goalkeeper Ian
Walker, Phil Neville, Andy Hinchcliffe, Nicky Butt and striker Dion Dublin.
British newspaper reporters at the La Manga country club said F.A.
spokesman David Davies held a media briefing earlier on Sunday and told
them the names of those dropped after The Sun had obtained the details.
Hoddle had not been due to announce the final 22-man squad until Monday,
but the news that a distraught Gascoigne was heading for home inevitably
leaked out. Gascoigne had experience on his side as the only current squad
member to have played in a World Cup finals.
He was famously booked in England's 1990 semifinal against eventual
winners Germany -- bursting into tears at a caution that would have
forced him to miss the final had England reached it.
Latterly, however, his fitness had become a real doubt and the pace and
touch of old seemed lacking. He was easily dispossessed of the ball and
just as easily left standing. He played two matches in the King Hassan II
Cup in Morocco last week without drawing any rave reviews.
More importantly, he had been warned by Hoddle last week after hitting
the tabloid headlines for a reported late night drinking bout in London
and cigarette smoking.
The Mirror had urged Hoddle to drop the maverick player after the night
on the town but former managers Bobby Robson and Terry Venables both
pleaded forgiveness.
"He can create chances for other people and stick it in the back of the
net and I don't think you can leave that kind of player out," 1990
manager Robson said. Hoddle, who has repeatedly wrong-footed the media
in the World Cup campaign, clearly thought otherwise.
He had given the player a final warning over his behaviour last week but
Gascoigne always appeared to be one of those world class players whose
exclusion was deemed unthinkable and whose name was regularly chanted
by the fans. London bookmakers William Hill said nobody had taken odds
of 10-1 offered on Gazza being dropped.
They decided his absence would be a blow for England and immediately
lengthened their title odds to 8-1 from 7-1. Hoddle had said repeatedly
that Gascoigne was not sure of a place but other comments had suggested
he was safe. Many of his colleagues past and present were as taken by
surprise as the player himself must have been.
"I can't believe it for one minute," former England team mate
Terry Butcher told BBC radio.
"It's a very, very brave decision by Glenn Hoddle. We all know what
he can do...I'm disappointed for Paul Gascoigne."
Gascoigne's former Glasgow Rangers team mate Trevor Steven said the
news was "breathtaking, really". "Knowing Paul, he will be devastated
by the news." Fans interviewed on radio and television expressed mixed
reactions, some accusing Hoddle of having "lost the plot" while others
said the manager had no choice.
The news hastened the footballing obituaries, with most considering
Gascoigne's international career over after a decade of genius on the
pitch and excess off it.
"The Gascoigne who huffed, puffed and looked as if he might peg out in
those two games in north Africa could have no place in the finals of the
World Cup. Not even as a kit man," declared the Sun's John Sadler.
"Hoddle has done what good managers sometimes have to do."
Teenage West Ham defender Rio Ferdinand's inclusion, along with cousin
Les, also went against most pundits' expectations with versatile Coventry
striker Dublin losing out. Walker had been fighting Leeds' Nigel Martyn
for a slot as third-choice goalkeeper but was not generally seen as being
in the reckoning and did not play in Morocco.
Manchester United duo Butt and Neville lost out to stronger claims by
Rio Ferdinand and the late return to fitness of Tottenham midfielder
Darren Anderton.

Croatia coach Miroslav Blazevic called up three new players to his
provisional World cup squad on Thursday to offset the last-minute
withdrawals of two strikers and a defender. Blazevic called Daniel Saric
of local champions Croatia Zagreb, Alen Peternac of Spanish side Valladolid
and little-known debutant Boris Zivkovic of Bayer Leverkusen.
Blazevic lost his 'trump card', Lazio striker Alen Boksic, on Tuesday after
a medical examination showed that his right knee needed urgent surgery
which will sideline him for a month.
Only the next day he eliminated a possible replacement, left-footed
Real Sociedad striker Igor Cvitanovic, for reportedly dodging training
and answering back, and on Thursday defender Stjepan Tomas dropped out
through injury. Peternac, who scored 13 goals in the Spanish championship
this season, might offer an alternative in the attack, which has been
considerably weakened by the loss of form of Real Madrid striker Davor Suker
and Valencia's Goran Vlaovic. Right full-back Saric has had two caps for
the A-side while Zivkovic, who joined Bayer this season, is uncapped.

World Cup-Yugoslavia name experienced 22-man squad

BELGRADE, June 1 - Yugoslav coach Slobodan Santrac relied heavily on
experience but also laid foundations for the future when he named
his 22-man squad for the World Cup finals on Monday.
Santrac caused a surprise by dropping two regular internationals,
defender Albert Nadj and forward Anto Drobnjak of French champions RC Lens.
He said he had taken into consideration the generation of players kept
out of the last World Cup by war-related sanctions imposed on Yugoslavia
between 1992 and 1995, and also the future of the game in his country.
"This is the best we can offer at the moment - there are no other reasons
for leaving anyone off the list," said Santrac. "We achieved our primary
aim, to reach the World Cup finals - I believe this was the last chance
to save Yugoslav soccer," he said, referring to the declining popularity
of local leagues caused by a massive flow of players to foreign clubs.
The team is headed by veteran playmaker Dragan Stojkovic who is expected
to retire after the tournament. Santrac is reported to have fallen out with
Nadj during eight days of training on Lake Palic, northern Yugoslavia,
and he said he was sorry to drop him "but rules are rules."
"Nadj and I have been working together for 12 years, but he simply could
not meet my requirements for the position I planned for him - there were
no disagreements of any kind between us," Santrac told a news conference.
"My programme required two players for every position in the team.
I had planned four strikers - there were six to begin with.
Zoran Rankovic dropped out due to injury and I had to leave out another."
Asked why he had chosen striker Darko Kovacevic over Drobnjak, Santrac
said Kovacevic was younger and had more internationals under his belt.
"He has been with the team since 1995, he is younger and he is the future
of Yugoslav soccer, and can certainly play for another five of six years
in this team." Santrac is banking on two outstanding talents to provide
flair - Crvena Zvezda Belgrade's teenager Dejan Stankovic, who has signed
a record deal with Lazio, and Stankovic's 21-year-old team mate
Perica Ognjenovic. Regular keeper Ivica Kralj sustained a nose injury
during last Friday's friendly with Nigeria and Yugoslavia will be taking
Dragoslav Jevric to Switzerland as cover in warm-up matches.
"We might have to spare Kralj in our matches with Japan on June 3 and
Switzerland three days later," he said. Yugoslavia play in Group F with
Germany, Iran and the United States. The opening match is against Iran
in St Etienne on June 14.
Asked about the toughest match in group F, Santrac said: "We treat all
opponents equally - our main objective is to pass the group stage.
It makes no difference whom we have to beat to do that".

World Cup-Blazevic puts off naming his squad
ZAGREB, June 1 - Croatian coach Miroslav Blazevic decided on Monday
to put off announcing his 22-man squad for the World Cup finals until
just before the FIFA deadline late on Tuesday as several key players
are recovering from injuries. Blazevic had been due to name the squad
for France on Monday but doubts about the fitness of wing-back Robert
Jarni, full-back Stjepan Tomas and midfielder Mario Stanic prompted him
to hold back. Young Croatia Zagreb defender Tomas appeared to be the most
doubtful of the three injured players. Jarni and Stanic are expected to be
included even if they are not fully fit as Blazevic is short of adequate
replacements. "The deadline is midnight Tuesday, there is no reason why
we shouldn't use all of the time at our disposal," said the secretary
general of the Croatian soccer association Zorislav Srebric.
"The final decision will be made after the training session on Tuesday

The left-footed striker-cum-winger would have come in handy in a situation
when the team had to fight its way back from a goal down against

pace on the flanks was the main reason for a lack of penetration in attack,

Two goals by midfielder Ilian Iliev sandwiched between an Oliver Schaefer

World Cup - Dropped Drobnjak slams Yugo coach
BELGRADE, June 2 - RC Lens forward Anto Drobnjak hit back at coach
Slobodan Santrac on Tuesday for the way in which he was dropped from
Yugoslavia's World Cup squad.
"I was told that I would not be going to France on Sunday evening by
goalkeeper Dragoje Lekovic," Drobnjak told the Belgrade daily Politika.
"Lekovic told me team technical secretary Dragoslav Pivic had called him
claiming that the federation did not have my mobile phone number," the
28-year-old said. "I cannot understand their attitude -- I am not 20 years
old so they can play games with me. I know what I am worth and if they
didn't need me they should not have invited me." Santrac, announcing his
final 22-man squad on Monday, preferred 24-year-old Darko Kovacevic to
Drobnjak on grounds that he was younger and had played more internationals.
That cut no ice with Drobnjak. "As far as Kovacevic's age is concerned,
it was known even before the start of the preparations that he is younger,"
he said. Drobnjak, who scored four goals in seven international appearances
for Yugoslavia, has been in excellent form and was instrumental in bringing
Lens the French league title this season, scoring twice in the match
against rivals Metz. Yugoslav fans were particularly looking forward
to his appearance against Germany in Lens on June 21.
Santrac's decision to leave out Real Betis defender Albert Nadj,
who played 10 of the team's 12 qualifying round matches, came as an even
bigger surprise. Nadj was reported to have opposed Santrac's decision to
play him as a left fullback in last Friday's friendly against Nigeria,
causing a storm among others on the team.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, June 2 - Italy's World Cup preparations suffered
a setback when they lost 1-0 in a warm-up match against Sweden on Tuesday.
But there was good news for Cesare Maldini's men when it was confirmed
that key Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero, who has been troubled
by a groin injury, will take his place in Italy's 22 for France '98.
"Alessandro Del Piero is among the 22, since our medical experts have
told us he has a good chance of recovering before the tournament
(begins)," Maldini said.
Bologna striker Kennet Andersson was Sweden's matchwinner on Tuesday
with a headed goal in the 90th minute. The game only really came alive
in the last quarter, when a sluggish Italy found themselves under increasing
pressure from the Swedes, who finished third at the last World Cup but
failed to qualify for France. Maldini refused to read too much into the
result, however. "We did not play badly. We missed a few opportunities,
which was a pity, but Sweden are a strong team," Maldini told a news
conference. Italy controlled the midfield in the first half, but struggled
to create many clearcut chances.
Andersson's Bologna team mate Roberto Baggio, starting his first game
for Italy since November 1994, was at the heart of most of Italy's best
moves. The 31-year-old set up Fabrizio Ravanelli for a run through on goal
which the Marseille striker wasted and then two minutes before the break
had the ball in the net himself only for the effort to be ruled out for
offside. It was a different story in the second half as the Swedes took
control and almost scored on several occasions before Andersson's decisive
late header. Maldini must have been concerned at how his side tired in the
second period and looked short of creative ideas.
Baggio was not too downhearted though.
"Unfortunately we lost, but I feel good and ready for the World Cup,"

dotični bio u Partizanu :)) Ono, jes' da smo mi imali Krupnikovića :),
ali mislim da je upravo trojac Pandur-Savo-Tumba, doneo Zvezdi titulu.

Bio je prvi strelac lige u vreme kada je Partizan davao preko
100 golova po sezoni. To je vreme kada je Zvezda prodala tim da ne
bi zadržavala mlade igrače u timu, zbog sankcija, dok je Partizan,
posle dosta "sušnih godina" zadržao igrače da bi konačno pobedio
Zvezdu. Tada je Partizan bio mnogo jači... Takođe, Savo jeste dao
nekoliko golova Zvezdi, ali ja ću mu biti večno zahvalan na većem
broju promašaja. ;)

Ta liga u kojoj je Savo bio najbolji strelac bila je umnogome jača od ove
protekle, ako se uzmu u obzir (poimence) sastavi timova kompletne A lige.
Prividna razlika je jedino u tome što su se ove godine za titulu borila
tri, a do prošle godine dva tima. Bez obzira, i Obilić i Zvezda i Partizan

PARIS, June 3 - Italian striker Christian Vieri could celebrate in
style on July 12 if Italy win the World Cup Final on his 25th birthday.
The Atletico Madrid striker is one of 62 players who celebrate their
birthdays during the World Cup finals between June 10 and July 12,
according to official squad lists published by FIFA on Wednesday.
However, Vieri is the only player whose birthday is on the same day as
the final. Ronnie Johnsen will celebrate his 29th birthday on the opening
day when his Norway team play Morocco.
As long as they are involved in the later stages of the finals, South
Africa, Belgium and the United States will celebrate most birthdays with
four each. No player from Yugoslavia, Mexico or British neighbours England
and Scotland will celebrate their birthday during the tournament.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 3 - A trademark free kick from sweeper
Sinisa Mihajlovic gave Yugoslavia a 1-0 win over fellow World Cup
finalists Japan in a friendly on Wednesday.
Italian-based Mihajlovic stepped up to blast home with his left foot
from 20 metres in the 70th minute after substitute Savo Milosevic
had been fouled. Japan, preparing for their first World Cup finals,
played some neat football but paid the penalty of failing to take two
clear chances early in the second half.
They also hit the bar in the first 45 minutes.
First playmaker Hidetoshi Nakata shot straight at the goalkeeper and
minutes later striker Masashi Nakayama blazed over when clean through.
The narrow win delighted the noisy expatriate Yugoslavs among the crowd
of 2,000 in the stadium overlooking the Lake of Geneva.
Yugoslavia are returning to the world stage after six years in
the wilderness following international sanctions against Belgrade.
Featuring a team packed with talent from leading European clubs they are
favourites to progress from group F along with Germany. The U.S. and Iran
complete the group. Japan, who co-host the World Cup in four years time,
appear to face a tough task in their group H where they must play Croatia,
former champions Argentina and fellow new boys Jamaica.
Yugoslavia dominated the first half but Japan came closest to scoring,
defender Akira Narahashi volleying against the bar after a quickly taken
free kick. For all their possession Yugoslavia created few geniune chances
and Real Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic endured a frustrating afternoon.

Stepanovic agrees deal to coach AEK Athens
ATHENS, June 3 - Serb Dragoslav Stepanovic has agreed a two-deal worth
260 million drachmas ($859,000) ($865,000) to coach Greek side AEK Athens.
The former Bayer Leverkusen coach will be officially unveiled on Thursday.
He replaces Romanian Dumitru Dumitriu who left AEK earlier this year
follow a disagreement over transfer policy. AEK have meanwhile rejected
a 1.25 billion drachma ($4.1 million) offer from Belgian side Anderlecht
for star striker Demis Nikolaidis, who scored 19 goals last season.
AEK are reported to want 1.7 billion drachmas for the player.
