Microsoft i CreativeLabs će sarađivati u razvoju MS-ovog mrežnog konferencijskog sistema NetMeeting, a direktna posledica saradnje biće dodata mogućnost video-konferensinga.

Without ConfigIt, changes to configuration files have to made either one computer at a time(very time consuming) or by replacing a current configuration file with another(not practical if the configuration file requires unique settings for each workstation, which is often the case). With ConfigIt, you can specify the changes that you would like to make and leave all other settings in the configuration file intact. Also you can have Configit log each update to keep track of which workstations have been updated. You can also create Configit Job files that can be used to entirely automate file updates when several changes are needed simultaneously. Izjava je glasila: "It can't be done." ;)

Izvor: PC Week Corporate Buyers' Advisory: Enterprise Network-Operating Systems Warp Server 4 IBM Armonk, N.Y. (800) 342-6672 http://www.software.ibm.com STRENGTHS: The fastest file and print server we tested. Easier to install than LAN Server; DHCP and DNS hosts ease TCP/IP management; new graphical backup tool offers robust features; includes utilities for remote console access, hardware/ software inventorying, system monitoring, and remote network access. WEAKNESSES: Sparse hardware support can make installation messy; some hardware reconfiguration may necessitate editing INI files from the command line; add-on network utilities are not tightly integrated; current domain-centric directory structure doesn't work well in enterprise environments. Windows NT 3.51 Server Microsoft Corp. Redmond, Wash. (800) 936-3500 http://www.microsoft.com STRENGTHS: Extensive hardware support and graphical management tools; easy installation and management; support for multiple processors, plus a RISC version, enhances scalability; extensive TCP/IP support; provides standards-based remote-access service for dial-up access. WEAKNESSES: Domain architecture is not complete enough for enterprise use and is difficult to adjust; demands top-notch hardware for good performance. NetWare 4.1 SMP Novell Inc. Provo, Utah (800) 638-9273 http://www.novell.com STRENGTHS: With its highly flexible network user and resource structuring, NDS eases enterprise network management; custom tuning tools and lean code exploit hardware for best performance; optional SMP version proves suitable for deployment as an applications server. WEAKNESSES: Lacks remote-access abilities; support for multiple processors is not standard; only runs on Intel platforms. BOTTOM LINE: Each of these three NOSes perform basic file and print services well, though Warp Server 4 took the performance lead in high-capacity tests. Enterprises already implementing LAN Server should certainly upgrade to Warp Server 4, but the NOS itself hasn't changed significantly; its numerous bundled features also need tighter integration and client support. Windows NT 3.51 Server supports the most back-end groupware and database software, and its ability to run on various RISC platforms is a good way to achieve performance improvements.

A i onda zaista izuzetno retko. Cesto i bezuspesno.

Novell ripe for a takeover? By Dawn Yoshitake August 30, 1996, 6:15 p.m. PST Novell, with its declining revenues and stock price, is viewed by technology researchers as a good takeover target by Netscape Communications and other technology companies. A Forrester report released this week said Netscape (NSCP) would do well by purchasing Novell (NOVL). The Internet software maker would benefit from Novell's installed base of more than 60 million users and a team of skilled service technicians, according to a Bloomberg report. Analysts expect Novell, which is losing market share to Microsoft and a host of other competitors that are luring corporate customers from the aging NetWare 3.0 software, will see its revenues drop this year by 25 percent to $1.5 billion. Novell's stock, meanwhile, has plummeted 47 percent in the past year to fall below $11 a share. A cheap stock could bring takeover candidates. Novell and Netscape officials disputed any merger or takeover deal, according to Bloomberg. Copyright ę 1996 CNET Inc. All rights reserved

- Press Release - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Novell Introduces IntranetWare Networking Leader Evolves NetWare Network Operating System into Full-Service Platform for Intranets and Internet Access BURLINGAME, Calif. -- August 20, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced IntranetWareÖ, a new product that continues the evolution of NetWare«, the world's leading network operating system (NOS), into a full-service intranet and Internet access platform for businesses of all sizes. IntranetWare builds on the distributed services found in NetWare 4.11 (code-named Green River) and integrates new intranet and Internet technologies, including a high-performance Web server and browser; a gateway between industry-standard TCP/IP and IPXÖ/SPX networking protocols; and a multiprotocol router for wide-area network and Internet connections. IntranetWare will ship in the fall of 1996 in the same time frame as the separately available NetWare 4.11. IntranetWare, along with network applications such as Novell's GroupWiseÖ E-mail and collaboration solution and ManageWiseÖ network management software, provides businesses with the most scalable, secure and reliable full-service intranet solution. IntranetWare will enable NetWare customers to preserve their existing network investment while evolving their business networks to embrace Internet technology and the benefits of intranets. IntranetWare enables customers to choose how and when they transition their corporate networks to intranets, by allowing them to selectively install those networking components that meet their immediate requirements. IntranetWare is fully compatible with NetWare 4 servers, applications and hardware, enabling users to upgrade their existing networks to networks that embrace Internet technology. Novell will focus on the IntranetWare platform and distributed network services in the future, but continue to sell and provide full support for NetWare 4 and NetWare 3. "With IntranetWare, Novell opens our product line and 55 million customers to the future of networking," said Robert J. Frankenberg, Novell chairman and CEO. "It was only a decade ago that Novell revolutionized networking with NetWare. Now we have again reached one of those watershed points in the development of our industry as customers evolve their networks into intranets based on distributed network services and open standards. Once again, Novell is driving the evolution of networking to give our customers' businesses an enduring competitive edge." "Novell defines a full-service intranet as a corporate network that supports Internet technologies and open standards, while also providing the distributed network services required for mission-critical business," said Steve Markman, executive vice president and general manager for the Novell Products Group. "With IntranetWare, we're giving organizations an intranet platform upon which they can add ManageWise and GroupWise to create full-service intranets that include directory, Web, security, file, print, management and messaging. We believe this evolution of our core technologies will help protect our customers' investments by smoothly migrating them to intranets, and provide new customers with the best price/performance intranet solution." "IntranetWare will help NetWare users extend their existing network infrastructure to the Internet and corporate intranets as they transition from IPX-only network environments," added Lee Doyle, vice president of local area networks and data communications at International Data Corporation, a leading market analysis organization. "As more NetWare customers take advantage of new Internet and intranet resources, they can add capabilities without having to sacrifice their existing investment in network access and management." High-performance Web Server and Browser IntranetWare enables businesses to access and publish information on intranets and the Internet with a high-performance Web server, browser and Web-site authoring tools. These include: * Novell's NetWare Web ServerÖ 2.5, the fastest and most powerful Web server in its class, and the only Web server integrated with Novell Directory ServicesÖ (NDSÖ) for fast and easy management of intranet-based information and resources; * Netscape Navigator, the world's most popular browser for accessing the World Wide Web and HTML-based applications and services, with Web-site authoring tools included. Simplified Administration of Internet Access IntranetWare's integrated IP/IPX gateway greatly simplifies the process of deploying an intranet Web server by freeing customers of the need to retrofit their business networks with IP addresses. To access the intranet or Internet, users simply launch the Netscape Navigator browser (or other WinSock 1.1-compliant application) from any desktop workstation and pass network traffic to the server for IPX-to-IP translation. Traditionally, network administrators had to install and maintain a separate IP stack on each desktop to provide NetWare clients with access to IP-based intranet or Internet services. Because IP is only deployed on the IntranetWare server, administrators save time and money by tracking and maintaining only one IP address per group of users. When organizations are ready to move to IP, IntranetWare supports TCP/IP with dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) and BootP to ease IP address management. Secure Access to Internet/Intranet Resources IntranetWare is a uniquely secure platform that acts as a natural level-one security firewall because only the server has an IP address, rendering IPX-based servers and workstations invisible to potential intruders from the Internet. With IntranetWare, network administrators can leverage both packet-level and user-level control to provide secure Internet access and manage the flow of information. IntranetWare also features the first Internet access solution that supports user- and group-level security tied to NDS, enabling administrators to manage, limit or block connections to specific Internet services and sites. Future enhancements to IntranetWare will feature full firewall and proxy cache capabilities. Create Wide-Area Intranets IntranetWare incorporates wide-area networking capabilities to support a high-speed wide-area network connection to an Internet service provider or a corporate intranet without requiring an external router, enabling companies to minimize their network implementation and management expenses. Its software routing technology provides wide-area networking services over ISDN lines, leased lines, frame relay and even ATM links, enabling organizations to easily upgrade to high-bandwidth technologies and maximize investment in their existing hardware and infrastructure. IntranetWare also provides businesses with server access to AT&T Worldnet Intranet Connect Services and other telecommunications carriers worldwide providing secure, managed wide-area intranet services based on Novell Connect Services (NCS) technology. Build and Run Applications on IntranetWare IntranetWare provides a proven, reliable foundation for running network applications and applications that leverage NDS, including the upcoming GroupWise 5, Novell's messaging and collaboration application; ManageWise 2.1, the end-to-end PC LAN and intranet management solution; and numerous third-party database and management applications. All applications developed to work with NetWare 4 or NDS will automatically run on IntranetWare upon its release this fall. IntranetWare also features the NetBasic scripting engine, a Visual Basic-compatible scripting interpreter that enables developers and administrators familiar with Visual Basic to easily build, manage and deploy advanced intranet applications (including dynamic HTML pages and sites) on IntranetWare. To build and deploy intranet solutions based on IntranetWare, developers will also be able to leverage all of the common World Wide Web services, including Java applets, JavaScript, the Remote Common Gateway Interface (R-CGI), the Local Common Gateway Interface (L-CGI), access controls and logging, and PERL script interpreters. Development partners will also be able to use an upcoming version of the Java Virtual Machine, an execution environment that will enable organizations to run Java applications on IntranetWare.

I nikom ništa.

Evo nešto više o tome: Apple Unveils Fast Servers at Seybold ------------------------------------- by Mark H. Anbinder <mha@tidbits.com> Last week, Apple took advantage of its continued prominence in the desktop publishing and design markets to push its latest network server technology at the Seybold Conference in San Francisco. The company introduced its latest server model and several enhancements to the Network Server and Workgroup Server lines, focusing on the Network Server 700/200, which now supports up to 65 GB of internal disk storage. This latest Network Server model sports a 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor and 48 MB of parity memory. Key to its data-handling and throughput capabilities are its two internal fast/wide SCSI-2 buses and an additional external SCSI channel. The system can handle up to seven 9 GB disks and one 2 GB disk internally using hot-swappable drives on removable trays, and can support up to a terabyte of total disk capacity using external disk arrays. The Network Server 700/200 has an Apple Price of $16,129 and should be available in early October of 1996. New options for the Network Server line include 9 GB fast/wide SCSI-2 hard drives and 8mm tape drives (which can back up as much as 22 GB per hour) preconfigured with removable trays, and an unlimited user license upgrade for AIX to replace the two- concurrent-login license that comes with the AIX accessory kit for the Network Servers. AIX 4.1 for Apple Network Servers, developed in conjunction with IBM, offers AppleTalk, Apple Events, and AppleScript capabilities familiar to Macintosh system administrators. At the same time, Apple has enhanced its Workgroup Server line by giving the 7250 and 8550 models larger hard disks, faster (8X) CD-ROM drives, more memory, and/or a processor speed bump. The company continues to offer configurations without software, with AppleShare printing and file server software, or with an Internet server software bundle including WebSTAR. Prices range from $2,689 to $7,399, depending on the model and configuration, and availability is expected to start in October. <http://product.info.apple.com/pr/press.releases/1996/q4/960909.pr.rel.servers. h tml>

Prvo je "u trendu" bio Internet, sada je to intranet, a sledece je... naravno, extranet: Andreessen foresees the extranet By Nick Wingfield September 20, 1996, 3:15 p.m. PT SAN FRANCISCO--Extranets, or intranets linked together via a wide area network, may very well be the next big thing in corporate use of Internet technology, according to Marc Andreessen, Netscape Communications' (NSCP) senior vice president of technology. "In most cases, [an extranet] is a secure IP connection over a leased line," Andreessen said in his keynote remarks at the Online Developers III conference here. "In some cases, it's a secure connection over the Internet itself." However, there is an obstacle standing before the development of extranets, he said. As more and more sensitive business data travels over the Net, U.S. export restrictions on strong cryptography technology may prove an impediment. "This brings the issue of exportable cryptography to a head." He added that a future version of Navigator will also boost the security of Net phone calls by encrypting voice packets as they stream across the Internet, a feature that might cause concern among governmental security agencies. "If anything is going to get anyone's underwear in a bunch over cryptography, this is it." Andreessen said. Like other companies, Netscape has found that profits in the consumer market are elusive and has turned increasingly to the corporate market, which is using Net technology to build intranets, and maybe soon extranets, Andreessen noted. Analysts at the conference said today that Netscape's recent, intense focus on the corporate marketplace represented by intranets and extranets has been prompted in part by Microsoft's entry into the Internet market. "Netscape has been forced into nonconsumer markets and now noncomputer devices by the overwhelming onslaught of Microsoft," said Adam Schoenfeld, vice president of Jupiter Communications, a market research firm that's hosting the conference. "Microsoft has ensured that there will be very little revenue in the consumer market by giving their browser away for free." Netscape wants to reach consumers through nonPC devices, a category in which Microsoft has shown limited interest. Netscape has high hopes that consumer dollars will eventually augment its bread-and-butter corporate revenue. Last month, the company created Navio Communications, a spin-off business that will develop browser software for video game machines, network computers (NCs), and other low-cost consumer devices. That's why after talking about the spread of extranets, Andreessen also took the time to remind the audience that Netscape has not forgotten its consumer base. He highlighted a number of emerging technologies, including NCs, Internet telephones, and the increasing bandwidth that will lure more consumers and innovation onto the Internet in the coming years.

Netscape embraces the intranet with new servers, groupware bundles NEW YORK -- Netscape Communications Corp. on Tuesday unveiled its intranet strategy for the corporate intranet market here with an expanded version of its Navigator browser, an upgraded server suite, and new client software that focuses on email, groupware, and calendaring. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company's new client and server packages, due to hit the market during the first quarter of 1997, add a number of Internet-friendly groupware functions to its existing browser and Web server products. These new functions broaden Netscape's offerings to include alternatives to Lotus Development Corp.'s Notes and Microsoft Corp.'s Exchange lines. New Netscape servers included in the SuiteSpot 3.0 integrated server suite will be Messaging Server 3.0, Collabra Server 3.0, Enterprise Server 3.0, Proxy Server 2.5, Calendar Server 1.0, and Media Server 1.0. Also in the SuiteSpot 3.0 package are the recently released Directory 1.0, Certificate 1.0, Catalog 1.0, and LiveWire Pro 1.0. On the client side, Netscape unveiled Communicator, integrating five component applications including the Navigator 4.0 browser, Composer HTML authoring tool, Messenger email, Collabra group discussion software, and Conference real-time collaboration software. Netscape also unveiled Communicator Professional Edition, which includes a calendar scheduling package, and AutoAdmin, a centralized user management package for IS administrators. By heavily increasing the functionality of its client software, Netscape hopes that users will no longer have to leave its programs to get their jobs done. "This is a full suite of products that will lead and define the third generation of the Internet," said Jim Barksdale, Netscape's president and CEO who joined the press conference here via satellite from London. "The browser is just the beginning." Enhancing its client software to do much more than just browsing better arms Netscape to compete head-to-head with the likes of Lotus's Notes, said an analyst. "It was said that Netscape has been competing with Notes since the opening day; people have been predicting the death of Notes," said Eric Brown, senior analyst of Forrester Research Inc.'s software strategy service in Cambridge, Mass. "Netscape is staying that strategy of connecting people with people. They will do very very well against Notes, but this is not the end of the Lotus division at IBM." Central to Netscape's 1997 strategy is Communicator, the company's new client offering that will include Navigator 4.0 -- and also replace it. A common tool bar appears in each module, as does a unified Web-like interface, so that users can move between the programs without necessarily realizing it, said Marc Andreessen, Netscape's senior vice president of technology. This offering, called Communicator Standard Edition, will be priced at $49 per user. A Professional Edition will also be offered, which will include all the elements of the Standard Edition plus Netscape Calendar group scheduling software and an administration pack for $79 per user. Communicator will run on Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, MacOS, and Unix. At the backend, Netscape will release SuiteSpot 3.0 during the same time frame of early 1997. This collection of ten Web servers corresponds to features in Communicator. SuiteSpot 3.0 will be available for Unix implementations and Windows NT. Any five of the nine servers plus Netscape's LiveWire Pro development environment will cost $3,995; each server can be purchased individually at $995. While Netscape is pitching its new client and server offerings together as a low-cost alternative to Notes and Microsoft's BackOffice suite of server applications, the company also said that all of its technology is based on Internet standards and therefore can work with other client or server software that implements the same standards. Netscape on Tuesday also unveiled an interoperability strategy dubbed "embrace and integrate," which intentionally or not pokes fun at competitor Microsoft's "embrace and extend" Internet strategy revealed last year. The new strategy is based on the principle of integrating with Microsoft products and technologies, including the Windows platform, Windows NT System Services, SQL Server and OLE, COM, ActiveX, Office, and BackOffice. Specifically, Andreessen said that Navigator 4.0 will work with OLE and COM, and will support certain aspects of ActiveX, such as components built in Visual Basic. Future versions of the software will work completely with Microsoft's component integration technology, he said.

Tivoli's TME 10 to enter prime time in December Tivoli Systems Inc.'s solution for managing the mainframe down to the desktop, TME 10 Global Enterprise Manager (GEM), will be available in December. The open standards-based product is designed to break previous platform barriers and provide a unified distributed management solution. Prior to its merger with IBM, Tivoli had focused on managing distributed systems. Its parent company was primarily focused on the mainframe. GEM has two key functional components, an Applications Policy Manager and Management Integration Services. The policy manager enables management at the business application level, and recognizes the relationships between applications across various platforms. The Management Integration Services provide the ability to manage S/390 and distributed environments as one system by enabling the sharing of data and integration of key management processes. Pricing and licensing will either be a one time charge for customers or an extension to existing S/390 enterprise software agreements. The GEM console runs on Unix, Windows NT, or OS/2.

Big Blue negotiates with Novell to offer NDS for AIX IBM, in a major coup for Novell Inc., has confirmed plans to offer Novell Directory Services (NDS) on the AIX Unix platform by June 1997. IBM is negotiating a license for Novell's Cross-Platform Services technology, the first step in porting NDS and other NetWare services such as file, print, and security to AIX. A formal agreement is expected this fall, said Barry Hutt, IBM product manager for network services and collaboration in the RISC System/6000 AIX group in Austin, Texas. NDS support on AIX would provide a unified network directory, offering a single point of administration and log-in for users in mixed AIX and NetWare environments, Hutt said. Both the IPX and IP network packet protocols and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol are expected to be supported by the product, Hutt said. The revelation comes at a time when Novell is boosting efforts to get its NDS technology adopted by other companies to create a de facto standard for enterprise network directories. Caldera Inc. has announced support of NDS and Novell networking services for its Linux platform in 1997. Oracle Corp. will support NDS in its object-computing framework, called the Network Computing Architecture, enabling NDS to be used for storing object references. Novell officials also hinted at an upcoming announcement to make NDS a "universal directory." Novell previously discussed plans to make NDS a nonplatform-specific "meta directory" that could manage multiple messaging systems and databases, as well as other directories. An administrator at an AIX and NetWare user site said it will be beneficial to get NDS on as many platforms as possible. "Right now, we know we've got 12 log-ins for the average administrator on campus," said Steve Berry, director of information services at the University of California, in San Francisco. Porting NDS to the various platforms on campus would reduce the number to a single network log-in, Berry said. The porting of NDS to other platforms, such as SunSoft Inc.'s Solaris and Digital Equipment Corp.'s Unix and VMS, has yet to be realized. The Santa Cruz Operation Inc., which markets a version of Unix for Intel-based platforms, already supports NDS. Hewlett-Packard Co. plans to do so in January with its NetWare/9000. Novell is also planning to develop a Windows NT version of NDS, which is expected to ship in 1997.

Netscape's groupware offering threatens Lotus, Microsoft NEW YORK -- Because it will be cross-platform, based on accepted Internet standards, and relatively cheap, Netscape Communications Corp.'s client/server groupware offering announced Tuesday stands a good chance of snatching market share away from Lotus Development Corp. and Microsoft Corp., industry analysts said. Netscape's Communicator groupware client software and corresponding SuiteSpot 3.0 server modules will offer a less complicated -- albeit less functional -- alternative to Lotus Notes, analysts said. See Netscape embraces the intranet with new servers, groupware bundles. Corporations looking for groupware functions but hesitant to go with Notes because of its proprietary nature, high level of complexity, and steep costs most likely will be attracted to the Netscape alternative, analysts said. "This is Notes for the rest of the world," said Timothy Sloane, director of Aberdeen Group's messaging applications research, in Boston. "Positioning it as a Notes killer is inappropriate; this is not a tightly integrated, rolled-out solution. ... It can't do the high-end groupware. But from the departmental level, this is much more compelling than Notes could ever be." Netscape's Tuesday demonstration of Communicator -- its forthcoming integrated client package that will include Navigator 4.0, Composer HTML authoring software, Messenger Web-enriched e-mail, Collabra group discussion, and Conference real-time collaboration software -- did not show great technology breakthroughs in the groupware arena. What it will do, however, is replace the Navigator software used by about 80 percent of browser users with a whole lot more functionality. "They're not really forging any new ground," said Ian Campbell, an analyst with International Data Corp. [IDC], based in Framingham, Mass., adding that it will, nonetheless, help Netscape catch up with Lotus in the groupware market. IDC on Tuesday released a study claiming that Netscape's customers who have intranets are realizing a return on their investment of more than 1,000 percent. Attempting to demonstrate the savings that Netscape's products will offer, company Vice President of Technology Marc Andreessen said that an installation of SuiteSpot 3.0 for a company with 500 users will cost $28,950, whereas a similar installation of Notes would cost $139,795. Communicator and SuiteSpot 3.0 will be available during the first quarter of 1997. The tight integration between Netscape's products and the Internet will also give it a leg up over the competition, analysts said. "In groupware, Lotus is more functional, but Netscape is more integrated with the Internet," said David Smith, research director with Gartner Group Inc.'s Internet strategies, in Stamford, Conn. "There will be more and more integration with the Internet, and Netscape is leading the way there." With an announcement of Netscape's intention to "embrace and integrate" competitor Microsoft's technologies, Netscape's groupware offering may fare better than Microsoft's Exchange and BackOffice products with customers that have cross-platform strategies, analysts said. Since the company's inception, Netscape's strategy has been to base its products on accepted Internet standards and to enable them to work with as many operating systems, networks, and databases as possible. Tuesday's announcement that it will also integrate tightly with Microsoft technologies such as Windows NT, Component Object Model (COM), Distributed COM, and ActiveX could mean that customers wanting the best Windows products that also go cross-platform will look to Netscape, Aberdeen's Sloane said. "[Netscape's groupware offering] offers similar functionality [to BackOffice] and will embrace Windows NT, but also other platforms," Sloane said. "It is highly differentiated from Microsoft's product because it [will be] open and available on different platforms."

(dv)
