fudbal.1804 kum.djole, -> #1765, mango

The Surinam-born player told the London Evening Standard: "The storm hasn't died yet." Seedorf is one of five black players left in the Euro 96 squad believed to be suffering a clash of cultures with coach Guus Hiddink. Dutch journalists have spoken of the squad being divided, with two major camps disputing the controversial departure of Davids. Davids, who joins AC Milan next season, was sent home after openly criticizing Hiddink following his omission for the Swiss game at Villa Park last Thursday. According to reports, Seedorf's comments suggest a wider agenda may be aired during talks with the management, with rumors of racial allegations circulating. "I am glad the conflict has come out into the open because it has become a major issue," he said. Seedorf refused to comment on whether he would return home himself in support of Davids. But he warned: "The whole thing is not over yet." He added both sides were now taking the opportunity of putting their opposing views to each other. "It is on the table. We are discussing it," he explained. In the wake of the dispute, captain Danny Blind has urged his side not to let it distract them from their match against England on Tuesday night. He said: "England always play 100 percent with their hearts. It can be a big problem when you don't play to 100 percent with your heart yourselves."

Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 23:18:33 -0400 From: Eugene <yshtutin@STERN.NYU.EDU> Subject: Euro'96 game reports from ESPNet (06.18/19.96) SCOTLAND FALLS DESPITE WIN By Brian Homewood Reuter _________________________________________________________________ BIRMINGHAM, England -- Scotland extended their sad record of falling at the first hurdle in every major tournament they have taken part in despite beating Switzerland 1-0 in their final Euro 96 group A match on Tuesday. The Scots finished level on points and goal difference with second-placed Netherlands, who lost 4-1 to England, but were eliminated because they scored only one goal in the tournament to three by the Dutch. Veteran striker Ally McCoist scored the winner with a superbly struck shot from outside the penalty area in the 36th minute but it was not enough. Scotland have now taken part in five World Cups and two European championships without going beyond the first round. As in many of their previous failures, Scotland were agonisingly close to glory. Scotland pressed forward desperately for much of the second half but that precious second goal stubbornly refused to materialise. The final whistle brought the familiar sight of the Scottish players disconsolate on the turf and their fanatical fans applauding their gallant but vain efforts. Each goal by arch-rivals England was greeted with wild cheering by the Scottish fans, which provided an almost surreal scenario, and a deathly hush briefly descended when the Dutch scored. "It was great credit to England and I thank (England coach) Terry Venables and his players for doing their best for Scotland. Unfortunately, we couldn't do what was necessary," said Scotland coach Craig Brown. Scotland dominated the match against dispirited opponents, who would have qualified only if both they and the Dutch had won. The Swiss fans' cowbells were silent for almost the entire game. McCoist, 33, was recalled to the starting line-up at the expense of John Spencer and missed two golden chances in the first seven minutes. Each time he had a free shot at goal from the edge of the six-metre area but both efforts were brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Marco Pascolo. The Scots were inspired by some fine play by captain Gary McAllister, who shook off his traumatic experience against England when he missed a crucial penalty in the 2-0 defeat. McAllister provided the pass for the goal when he fed McCoist who thumped a shot into the top corner of the Swiss goal from 25 metres. The Scots continued to create most of the chances in the second half. Gordon Durie had a powerful shot saved by Pascolo, while the Swiss goalkeeper also did well to parry a volley from a narrow angle by substitute Scott Booth. As the minutes ticked away, Scotland threw everyone, including central defender Colin Hendry, into attack. They were nearly caught out in the 86th minute when previously untroubled goalkeeper Andy Goram touched Kubilay Turkyilmaz's header on to the crossbar. Scotland -- 12-Andy Goram, 4-Colin Calderwood, 5-Colin Hendry, 3-Tommy Boyd, 16-Craig Burley, 8-Stuart McCall, 10-Gary McAllister, 13-Tosh McKinlay (20-Scott Booth 61), 11-John Collins, 14-Gordon Durie, 9-Ally McCoist (7-John Spencer 83). Switzerland -- 1-Marco Pascolo, 2-Marc Hottiger, 15-Ramon Vega, 4-Stephane Henchoz, 3-Yvan Quentin (20-Alexandre Comisetti 80), 16-Marcel Koller (6-Raphael Wicky 46), 10-Ciriaco Sforza, 21-Christophe Bonvin, 17-Johann Vogel, 14- Kubilay Turkyilmaz, 11-Stephane Chapuisat (7-Sebastien Fournier 46) Referee - Vaclav Krondl (Czech Republic). ***************************************************************************** FRANCE GAINS SWEET REVENGE OVER BULGARIANS By Timothy Collings Reuters _________________________________________________________________ NEWCASTLE, England -- France gained long-awaited and sweet revenge on Tuesday when they beat Bulgaria 3-1 to march into the quarter-finals of the European championship. France's intoxicating mixture of passion, flair and technique proved too much for the Bulgarians, earning them a last eight meeting with the group A winners on Saturday. The win extended their long unbeaten run to 26 games dating back to November 1993 when, in injury time in Paris, Bulgaria scored the late goal which took them, instead of France, to the 1994 World Cup finals. This time France were left celebrating at the end of a riveting spectacle. Goals by sweeper Laurent Blanc, after 21 minutes, and luckless Bulgarian striker Luboslav Penev, in his own net, after 63 minutes, put the French in command. Hristo Stoichkov, with his third strike in three Euro 96 appearances, from a perfectly-placed 69th minute free-kick, gave Bulgaria late hope of salvaging a draw. But their hopes of some reward were ended in the final minute when substitute striker Patrice Loko skipped around goalkeeper Borislav Mihailov, making a record 97th appearance for his country, to hit the third. With Spain beating Romania 2-1 in the other final group B fixture in Leeds, Bulgaria were eliminated from the tournament despite their vigourous and colourful display. For Stoichkov, in particular, this was a great pity because his mixture of artistry, anger and danger made him one of the most watchable strikers in the tournament. Two players were cautioned in the opening eight minutes -- French stopper Marcel Desailly, for a foul on Stoichkov after the Bulgarian had played the ball through his legs to beat him, and the heavy-eyed Trifon Ivanov, for a late tackle on Bixente Lizarazu. These early yellow cards were expected to prompt even more indiscipline but the game settled down into a intriguing battle of thrust and counter-attack with Yordan Lechkov and Stoickhov playing splendidly for Bulgaria without much luck. After 11 minutes a low cross from Lechkov tempted half the French defence and left Penev, at the far post, with an inviting chance but he volleyed wide. At the other end, as if to match their opponents blow for blow, the elusive and skilful Yuri Djorkaeff curled a low free kick past the defensive wall to force a one-handed, diving save by Mihailov. The pace was too much even for the referee, Englishman Dermot Gallagher, who limped off in the first half to be replaced by reserve official Paul Durkin. Blanc's opening goal, headed home after he had risen above two defenders to meet a Djorkaeff corner, invigorated France and deflated Bulgaria, for whom Stoichkov was lucky to escape being sent off after a jump and then a kick at his marker Desailly. French striker Christophe Dugarry, showing all the power and touch which has earned him a transfer to AC Milan, became the third man to be booked for a foul on Tzanko Tsvetanov shortly before the interval when he also almost scored with a solo break. The second half was just as closely-fought but once Penev, under pressure from Blanc, had glanced a header from a Djorkaeff free-kick past his own goalkeeper, it was beyond Bulgaria's means to recover. Stoichkov's virtuoso free-kick was a brilliant adieu from him. But France had the last laugh with Loko's swift strike after being released by the industrious Christian Karembeu in injury time. France: 1-Bernard Lama, 5-Laurent Blanc, 15-Lilian Thuram, 8-Marcel Desailly, 12-Bixente Lizarazu, 19-Christian Karembeu, 7-Didier Deschamps, 6-Vincent Guerin, 9-Youri Djorkaeff, 10-Zinedine Zidane (18-Reynald Pedros 62), 13-Christophe Dugarry (11-Patrice Loko 70). Spain had appeared to be finished with the score tied at 1-1 until Amor, stooping at the far post, headed home from Alfonso Perez's cross to secure his side's first victory of the tournament at the third attempt. The biggest cheer of the afternoon, however, arrived when news of France's third goal against Bulgaria filtered through from Newcastle, ensuring Spain rather than the Bulgarians would occupy the second qualifying place in group B if they held on. Spain had taken the lead through Javier Manjarin after just 10 minutes, but squandered numerous chances to make the game safe after Florin Raducioiu had levelled for Romania in the 29th minute. The Spanish were aware before kick-off that even a hatful of goals might be insufficient to save them from an early exit, despite the ideal start provided by Deportivo's Manjarin. There was a stroke of luck involved, the ball cannoning off a Romanian defender straight into Manjarin's path, but the winger tucked the chance away adroitly with his left foot from the edge of the area. The Romanians, though, could easily have scored twice themselves in the opening minutes, with Adrian Ilie particularly wasteful in his first starting appearance of the tournament. Goals, or rather the lack of them, proved Romania's undoing against France and Bulgaria but after 209 scoreless minutes in Euro 96 they finally broke their duck in style. A superb passing movement, which started deep in their own half, ended Florin Radicioiu racing onto a through ball and sending a low shot under the diving Zubizarreta. It was no more than Anghel Iordanescu's team deserved and went some way towards justifying the widespread changes which left only four survivors from their opening match of the finals. Spain have been scarcely more settled, with just five of the side who started against Bulgaria on duty at the kick-off, and coach Javier Clemente maintained the trend by using all three of his permitted substitutes inside the first 71 minutes. The one thing Clemente was powerless to do was find the opposition net, and when Amavisca and Hierro missed golden second-half chances it seemed Spain were about to pay dearly for their lack of composure in the penalty area. Instead, one of Clemente's second-half substitutes finally achieved what his strikers had failed to do, Barcelona's Amor earning his side only their second win over Romania in 18 years and a quarter-final date at Wembley on Saturday. Spain -- 1-Andoni Zubizarreta; 2-Juan Manuel Lopez, 4-Rafael Alkorta, 5-Abelardo Fernandez (18-Guillermo Amor 46), 12-Sergi Barjuan; 17-Javier Manjarin, 20-Miguel Angel Nadal, 6-Fernando Hierro, 7-Jose Amavisca (8-Julen Guerrero 71), 9-Juan Antonio Pizzi (11-Alfonso Perez 57), 14-Kiko Narvaez. The Dutch, ranked as second favourites before the start of the tournament, also survived to reach the last eight but only because substitute Patrick Kluivert scored 12 minutes from time. That goal meant the Dutch edged Scotland out of second place in group A and while England now entertain Spain at Wembley on Saturday, the Netherlands travel to Liverpool to face France, the winners of group B. England wrapped up their place in the next phase thanks to a blistering 11-minute burst early in the second half with Sheringham scoring twice and Shearer once, adding to his 23rd minute penalty. The Dutch, who had not lost to England in five meetings over the past 14 years, were ripped apart by the devastating pace of Steve McManaman and the industry of Darren Anderton and Paul Gascoigne in midfield and were lucky to survive an even bigger mauling. The night's magic was best summed up by England's third goal and Shearer's second after 57 minutes. Gascoigne won a tackle at the edge of the penalty area and played a perfect ball across the area to Sheringham, who looked as though he was going to attempt a shot with only goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar to beat. But he played the ball across to the unmarked Shearer, who lashed the ball home to round off a superb move. The Netherlands started well, but England were not overawed by the country which destroyed them in the 1988 European championship and also knocked them out of the 1994 World Cup qualifiers three years ago. England went close to scoring after eight minutes when Shearer had a shot cleared off the line by Richard Witschge. But after 23 minutes England did go ahead after Dutch skipper Danny Blind tripped Paul Ince in the box to concede a penalty -- and a booking. Shearer made no mistake with his spot kick to score for the third successive match in the tournament -- a contrast to his fortunes over 12 England matches before Euro 96 when he failed to find the net. The Dutch continued to put England under pressure but goalkeeper David Seaman had only one serious save to make in the opening half when he turned away a fierce drive from his Arsenal team mate Dennis Bergkamp for a corner five minutes before the break. Five minutes after the interval, England created an outstanding move involving Anderton, Sheringham and McManaman which led to the corner from which they went 2-0 ahead. Gascoigne's high, curling inswinger was met perfectly by Sheringham, who outjumped Aron Winter to head the ball past Van der Sar. Six minutes after that came Shearer's second and England's third but the hosts were still not finished. They made it 4-0 when Van der Sar failed to hold Anderton's 15-metre shot and Sheringham outpaced Winston Bogarde to fire home the loose ball for his second of the night. With the match dead and buried and the Dutch heading for elimination, coach Guus Hiddink sent on Ajax's teenaged striker Patrick Kluivert for winger Peter Hoekstra with 18 minutes to go, and his tactic quickly paid off. After only six minutes on the pitch, Kluivert was played into space in the England box and he shot calmly though Seaman's legs for the goal that kept the Netherlands in the championship. They hardly deserved it after playing poorly and wasting the chances that came their way. More intriguingly, they were out-thought and out-run in midfield by an England side brimming with confidence following Saturday's 2-0 win over Scotland. The only disappointment for England on an otherwise memorable night was a first-half booking for Ince, his second of the competition, which means he misses Saturday's match with Spain. England coach Terry Venables is most likely to replace Ince in the match against Spain with David Platt, who came on for the last 20 minutes and outwardly showed little sign of the rib injury that sidelined him last Saturday. England: 1-David Seaman, 2-Gary Neville, 5-Tony Adams, 6-Gareth Southgate, 3-Stuart Pearce, 4-Paul Ince (7-David Platt 68), 8-Paul Gascoigne, 11-Darren Anderton, 17-Steve McManaman, 9-Alan Shearer (14-Nick Barmby 76), 10-Teddy Sheringham (21-Robbie Fowler 76). Netherlands: 1-Edwin van der Sar, 2-Michael Reiziger, 15-Winston Bogarde, 3-Danny Blind, 4-Clarence Seedorf, 6-Ronald de Boer (9-Patrick Kluivert 73), 12-Aron Winter, 14-Richard Witschge (18-Johan de Kock 46), 17-Jordi Cruyff, 10-Dennis Bergkamp, 11-Peter Hoekstra (20-Philip Cocu 73). Most were for drunkenness. England overwhelmed the Dutch team 4-1 and fans celebrated until the early hours of the morning in Trafalgar Square and other central London spots. Police said on Wednesday that the celebrations were mostly good-natured, although bottles were thrown at officers in "one or two minor incidents."

**************************************************************************** RELUCTANT FRANCE EMERGING AS BELLE OF THE BALL By Timothy Collings Reuters _________________________________________________________________ NEWCASTLE, England -- Twelve years after Michel Platini inspired them to success on a balmy night in Paris, France are back among the most admired contenders for the top prize in European soccer. Their 3-1 victory over Bulgaria at St James' Park on Tuesday, lit up by the quality of their all-round organisation and delightful attacking play, secured a well-deserved passage to the Euro 96 quarter-finals. But, like a beautiful, blushing teenager at her first party, the French team and their coach worked just as hard to try to cover their embarrassment in modesty as the plaudits poured in afterwards. "This team still needs more experience, it is a team of potential, but we are very happy with the way it is developing," said coach Aime Jacquet, the personification of schoolmasterly dignity and good manners. "It was our first objective to qualify and we have achieved that, so we are happy." In a weaker moment he admitted also that he would have been delighted if France had finished second instead of top of group B. That would have meant a meeting with England at Wembley on Saturday instead of travelling to Liverpool to face the Netherlands. "Yes, I want to play at Wembley," he said. "But it can wait until later..." The bespectacled Jacquet was pressed for praise for his players in the aftermath of his team's 26th match without defeat but, as usual, evaded each question with the same elegance his silky-skilled playmaker Zinedine Zidane avoided tackles. "I am very happy to have beaten Bulgaria," he said, avoiding any over-indulgence in pleasure at avenging the defeat, in November 1993, which initiated Bulgaria's great World Cup crusade in America in 1994. The defeat left France on the sidelines and sparked his promotion to national coach. "It was a difficult match...We decided to play this match in a more technical way and we changed our style. But that was thanks to the exuberant, flexible and spontaneous players who can adapt their play in my squad. This is what allowed us to do well." Jacquet's praise of the team ethic and his clever use of a squad system -- which he introduced to replace the old star system previously used by his predecessors Gerhard Houllier and Michel Platini -- paid off through the group B games, vindicating fully his omission of Eric Cantona, David Ginola and Jean-Pierre Papin. He proved the French squad had strength and skill in depth, with several players showing the kind of versatility and even temperament which any nation requires to be successful and win titles. His captain Didier Deschamps, fresh from winning the European Cup with his Italian club Juventus, embodied his coach's philosophy with a perfect combination of industry and imagination within a coherent pattern of play. Asked about the modesty of the French squad, he said: "Modesty is something you should always display in respect to the opposition but I think this team has big potential -- the potential to reach the final. "We realise there are serious big steps to take first, on the way, but we have the confidence and the ability to do it." Like Deschamps, Jacquet felt confident his squad, which had six players carrying one caution, was quite capable of coping with the threat of suspensions. "We are a group of interchangeable parts," he said. "I think we have enough players to deal with this situation properly." **************************************************************************** DENMARK EXITS EURO 96 WITH A FLOURISH By Timothy Collings Reuters _________________________________________________________________ SHEFFIELD, England -- Defending champions Denmark bade farewell to Euro 96 with a flourish on Wednesday when they crushed miserly Turkey 3-0 in their final group D match at Hillsborough. In front of a vast bank of their red-and-white army of fans, the Danes, who won the title on home soil in 1992, recovered from a dreary first-half performance to show glimpses of the once dynamic attacking play of former glories. Led splendidly by brothers Michael and Brian Laudrup, whose creative skills gave the Danish supporters something to celebrate in the second period after a dreary first half, Denmark at least exited the tournament on a high note. Knowing that Portugal were in command in the other group match, they determined to put on a show for their own fans and fully deserved their victory. The Turks, cravenly defensive for most of the game and without a goal to show for their first appearance in the European finals, had little to offer in return, but were unlucky late in the game when they had one effort disallowed. By then, however, the two excellent Laudrup brothers had combined to put the game beyond their reach. Brian Laudrup struck first for Denmark after 49 minutes and added a second six minutes from time after older brother Michael had set up Allan Nielsen to score the Danes second in the 69th minute. The match unexpectedly produced five yellow cards in the second half as both teams attempted to score, but it was rarely a clash of the highest quality or commitment. The first caution, when Turkish defender Tugay Kerimoglu was shown the yellow card for a foul on Brian Nielsen, was virtually the only noteworthy event in the opening period. Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel made one fine save from a shot by Orhan Cikirikci and Brian Laudrup, following up a parried shot by Allan Nielsen, lifted a close-range effort high and wide to break up the first-half boredom. But it was a different story after the interval. Enlivened by something during the break, Denmark were a different team. They struck their first blow when Brian Laudrup, running onto a perfectly-angled pass from Erik Bo Andersen, ran round Turkey's hapless goalkeeper Rustu Recber to slide in the opening goal. Central defender Marc Reiper had a powerful header blocked and Allan Nielsen wasted another chance, after a silky one-two with Michael Laudrup, before Denmark scored again. This time the older Laudrup, Michael, was the architect with a clever pass for the industrious Allan Nielsen whose bright performance was deservedly rewarded as he stroked the ball into the net. The Turks were by then bewildered and and resorted to niggling fouls to break up the Danish play before Brian Laudrup, set up by Bo Andersen, skated through to score the third. Turkey were unfortunate, during one brief spell of retaliatory attacking play, when substitute Saffet Sancakli rifled the ball home, but was ruled offside by a linesman. It seemed a very narrow decision. Bookings, however, for Tayfun Korkut and goalkeeper Rustu, who was lucky to escape a red card for handling outside his penalty area, said more about their performance. The second-half cautions collected by Henrik Larsen and Thomas Helveg showed that the Danes, at last, were trying. Yellow cards: Denmark: Thomas Helveg (56), Henrik Larsen (80) Turkey: Tugay Kerimoglu (44), Tayfun Korkut (60), Rustu Recber (89) Denmark: 1-Peter Schmeichel, 8-Claus Thomsen, 5-Jens Hoegh, 3-Marc Rieper, 6-Michael Schoenberg (13-Henrik Larsen 46), 2-Thomas Helveg, 15-Erik Bo Andersen, 7-Brian Steen-Nielsen, 17-Allan Nielsen, 10-Michael Laudrup, 11-Brian Laudrup. Turkey: 22-Rustu Recber, 2-Recep Cetin (20-Bulent Korkmaz 68), 3-Alpay Ozala, 4-Vedat Inceefe, 17-Abdullah Ercan; 15-Tayfun Korkut, 5-Tugay Kerimoglu, 7-Hami Mandirali, 8-Ogun Temizkanlioglu, 11-Orhan Cikirikci (14-Saffet Sancakli 68), 9-Hakan Sukur (18-Arif Erdem 46). The emphatic 3-0 win from a busy and attractive Portuguese side propelled them to the top of group D, avoiding a probable clash with tournament favourites Germany in the quarter-finals on Sunday. Croatia, fancied outsiders before the tournament began, looked a shadow of the side that beat Denmark 3-0 to qualify for the last eight. Coach Miroslav Blazevic completely revamped the team, making seven changes and the side lacked conviction. The Portuguese, who have delighted crowds in England with their skilful brand of touch football, took full advantage. They were one up within four minutes when Secretario and Rui Costa performed a neat one-two, putting the ball through to Figo who slotted it past bemused reserve goalkeeper Marijan Mrmic. Benfica striker Joao Pinto made it two in the 33rd minute, scoring from a pass by Sa Pinto, deftly put his way by Parma defender Couto after a corner. Blazevic has repeatedly said that he would prefer to meet Germany rather than Italy in the quarter-finals so the defeat may not have been too much of a disappointment. His side reacted badly to the Portuguese pressure, earning three yellow cards in the first half for heavy tackles on the talented Portuguese midfield. However, they did have a couple of scoring chances. In the 13th minute Barcelona's Robert prosinecki lofted a corner into the box but Dario Simic's free header went straight into the safe hands of Vitor Baia. Seven minutes later Robert Jarni, who also plays in Spain for Real Betis, slipped past two defenders and crossed to Goran Vlaovic. But Vlaovic, scorer of his side's only goal against Turkey last week, had his powerful shot bundled off the line by the ever -vigilant Portuguese goalkeeper. Blazevic brought on his top strike force of Zvonomir Boban and Davor Suker in the second half but the Croatians still failed to turn on the magic. It was left to Domingos, the Portuguese league's most prolific scorer this season, to set the City Ground alight. Domingos, a second half substitute, had missed an open goal in the 56th minute but with seven minutes remaining he neatly controlled a ball that had ricocheted off Dubravko Pavlevic's back. The Porto striker kept a cool head, drew Mrmic out and put the ball away. Delighted fans, decked in red and green, bounced up and down and side to side like a formation dance team in celebration behind the goal. Afterwards Domingos said his side were patently the best team in the group. "We proved we were the best, superior to the others in the group. We deserved to go through," he said. Portugal drew 1-1 with Denmark in their first match of the competition and beat Turkey 1-0. Yellow cards: Croatia: Igor Pamic (10), Robert Jarni (29), Dubravko Pavlicic (36). Croatia -- 12-Marijan Mrmic, 3-Robert Jarni, 6-Slaven Bilic, 14-Zvonimir Soldo, 15-Dubravko Pavlicic, 8-Robert Prosinecki (7-Aljosa Asanovic 46), 16-Mladen Mladenovic (10-Zvonimir Boban 46), 20-Dario Simic, 17-Igor Pamic (9-Davor Suker 46), 19-Goran Vlaovic, 2-Nikola Jurcevic. Portugal -- 1-Vitor Baia, 2-Carlos Secretario, 5-Fernando Couto, 16-Helder Cristovao, 13-Dimas Teixeira, 4-Oceano Cruz, 19-Paulo Sousa (6-Jose Tavares 70), 10-Rui Costa (14-Pedro Barbosa 61), 20-Luis Figo, 9-Sa Pinto (15-Domingos Oliveira 46), 8-Joao Pinto. ***************************************************************************** CZECHS GO THROUGH DESPITE RUSSIAN SCARES By Robert Kitson Reuters _________________________________________________________________ LIVERPOOL, England -- The Czech Republic qualified for the quarterfinals of Euro 96 in sensational fashion on Wednesday after Russia appeared to have stolen their thunder in a memorable Group C game at Anfield. The Czechs, 2-0 ahead after just 19 minutes, looked to have blown their chances when Russian substitute Vladimir Beschastnykh rifled home a 25-metre shot in the 85th minute to put his side 3-2 ahead. But just as it seemed Portugal's opponents in Birmingham on Sunday would be Italy, Czech substitute Vladimir Smicer raced on to a through ball and beat Russian goalkeeper Stanislav Cherchesov to salvage a 3-3 draw. The Czech players had to wait for a few seconds before learning of Italy's goalless draw against Germany, but their solitary point proved just enough to spark joyful mid-pitch celebrations. The Czechs hit the woodwork on four occasions, but still came close to disaster in a second-half which contained more twists than a detective novel. Russia had played the first 45 minutes like a side who had already packed their bags for home, but two substitutions at the interval transformed the game and at one stage threatened to lift them back into the qualifying equation. It took only four minutes for substitute Alexander Mostovoi to make an impact, heading home Dmitry Kokhlov's cross from close range and the Russians were level five minutes later. Defender Omar Tetradze made a rare foray into the Czech box and although his intended ball to Radimov failed to yield dividends, he was quickest to react to the rebound to register his first international goal in his 26th appearance. Beschastnykh's strike was a contender for goal of the tournament, but in terms of value to his country, Smicer's effort was made of solid gold. The striker, who only appeared in the 68th minute, still had plenty to do when he received the ball just outside the area but coolly beat the goalkeeper with a low shot into the far corner. Having beaten Italy 2-1 on the same ground last week, no-one could say the Czechs did not deserve to qualify for the final stages at the first attempt since the splitting up of the former Czechoslovakia. They tend to be solid rather than spectacular in midfield but winger Karel Poborsky is a constant source of danger and they are capable of creating goalscoring opportunities from deep positions. Both their headed first-half goals from Jan Suchoparek and Pavel Kuka were certainly classics, the latter a delightful looping effort from a 50-metre pass by the intelligent Jiri Nemec. The Czechs could have established an impregnable lead if Michal Hornak and Patrik Berger had not been denied by the Russian woodwork, but in the end the only statistics which really mattered were the group C final standings. Czech Republic: 1-Petr Kouba, 15-Michal Hornak, 12-Lubos Kubik, 3-Jan Suchoparek, 2-Radek Latal, 13-Radek Bejbl, 14-Patrik Berger, 4-Pavel Nedved, 7-Jiri Nemec, 8-Karel Poborsky, 9-Pavel Kuka (17-Vladimir Smicer 68). Russia: 12-Stanislav Cherchesov, 3-Yuri Nikiforov, 2-Omar Tetradze, 20-Sergei Gorlukovich, 18-Igor Yanovsky, 16-Igor Simutenkov (17-Vladimir Beschastnykh 46), 21-Dmitry Khokhlov, 19-Vladislav Radimov, 4-Ilya Tsymbalar (15-Igor Shalimov 67), 6-Valery Karpin, 9-Igor Kolyvanov (10-Alexander Mostovoi 46). Koepke was lucky not to be sent off in the eighth minute afer he brought down Pierluigi Casiraghi with his feet when the Italian striker had broken clear in front of goal. Tthe Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper was not even booked for the foul and went on to save Gianfranco Zola's penalty and produce some superb saves later on to deny the World Cup runners-up the victory they needed to stay in the competition. Italian fans suffered their most frustrating night for years as their team failed to score against a stubborn German team who were reduced to 10 men in the 60th minute when wing-back Thomas Strunz was sent off for his second bookable offence. The Italians finished level on points with the Czech Republic, who drew their final match with Russia 3-3. The Czechs went through on the basis of having beaten Italy 2-1 in the group clash at Anfield last week. The Germans won the group and now meet Croatia in the quarterfinals on Sunday -- the countries' first meeting since 1942. But Berti Vogts's team will need some time to get this match out of their legs. Rarely has a German team had to absorb so much pressure. The German fans roared Koepke's name during the wild celebrations at the end of the match and chanted "Auf Wiedersehen" at the Italian supporters. It was a particular harsh way to react to a draw which their team were very fortunate to achieve after struggling for long periods. Apart from a Juergen Klinsmann header which flashed past the post in the 28th minute and a long-range free kick from midfielder Andy Moeller which went over the bar in the second half, the 1990 World Cup winners produced nothing dangerous. Italian goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi was largely unemployed. Koepke was by far the best German player on the pitch. Apart from the penalty, his best save came at the start of the second half when he dived acrobatically to his left to block a fierce shot from Diego Fuser from the right hand side of the box. But the line between success and failure for Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi was as thin as the material on Koepke's gloves. The group was dubbed the "Group of Death" because it was the toughest of the championship. The Italians' early exit could mean the end of Sacchi who is now sure to come under pressure to quit from the Italian media. His team has played some entertaining football in England but Sacchi made some controversial changes for the Czech match. Roberto Donadoni was a constant danger for the Italians on the left side. Strunz, who came into the side for the injured Stefan Reuter, was clearly out of his depth. The Bayern Munich player was shown his first yellow card in the first half for a foul on the midfielder and was sent off in the 60th for another foul on the veteran. After this far from impressive performance the Germans face a Croatian team at Old Trafford on Sunday which Vogts called his "secret tip" to win Euro 96 before the championship. The German manager said he was disappointed to see the Italians go out but praised Koepke and defender Thomas Helmer for what he called world-class performances. "We played a very strong team today and we had to battle a draw. It is a shame that the Italians are no longer in the competition," Vogts said. "It is going to be very difficult against Croatia because Helmer may be doubtful and we may have to rebuild our defence." Germany -- 1-Andreas Koepke, 6-Matthias Sammer, 4-Steffen Freund, 19-Thomas Strunz, 21-Dieter Eilts, 5-Thomas Helmer, 17-Christian Ziege, 10-Thomas Haessler, 7-Andy Moeller (3-Marco Bode 89), 18-Juergen Klinsmann, 9-Fredi Bobic. Italy -- 1-Angelo Peruzzi, 8-Roberto Mussi, 5-Alessandro Costacurta, 3-Paolo Maldini, 4-Amedeo Carboni (9-Moreno Torricelli 78), 17-Diego Fuser, 10-Demetrio Albertini, 16-Roberto Di Matteo (19-Enrico Chiesa 68), 7-Roberto Donadoni, 21-Gianfranco Zola, 18-Pierluigi Casiraghi. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright 1996 Starwave Corporation and ESPN Inc. Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 00:25:53 -0400 From: Eugene <yshtutin@STERN.NYU.EDU> Subject: Euro'96 off day news from SoccerNet (06/20/96) Friday, June 21 1996 David Platt is fit to take his turn in England's football revival at Wembley tomorrow in a side which, for once, isn't in need of one of his rescue acts. The squad captain stands by to assume the midfield role made vacant by the one-match suspension of Paul Ince as coach Terry Venables makes his first enforced change after starting the three group matches with the same 11 faces. Platt's reputation is that of the man to whom England look to get something out of nothing, as his record of 27 goals in 60 appearances testifies. Now he can surf the crest of the nation's optimism into the quarter-final against Spain. A rib-cage injury has prevented him working at full pelt until now but Platt said: 'This is a different game, anyhow, one that could require a different formation and different personnel. That's the beauty of having a squad that's capable of playing. We could put any 11 out and produce a performance because it's very competitive and every player is good enough. 'We had a week to prepare for the Switzerland game, a week to prepare for Scotland but only 48 hours before the Holland game. There were also injuries flying around, so Terry didn't have his full squad on the training pitch to work with for long sessions. But he put his ideas across tremendously well and the lads took it on to the pitch. What worked in practice worked in reality.' The goals are coming from so many avenues and angles - four from Alan Shearer, two from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Gascoigne's special against the Scots - any thing from Platt tomorrow would be more of a bonus than a necessity. Arsenal's ú4million import from Italy last summer replaced Ince late in the humbling of Holland on Tuesday and is almost certain to get the nod to fill the shoes of the Inter Milan midfielder. Gareth Southgate of Aston Villa will step forward again from his more orthodox defensive role into midfield, with Platt asked to supplement his urge to break into the opponents' penalty area with vital work around the fringes of his own. It was the quality of work done by Ince, Steve McManaman, Darren Anderton and a deep-lying Teddy Sheringham - closing down the Dutch playmakers and allowing Gascoigne to flourish - which set the mood for a performance the country is still talking about. The strategy will be different against the Spaniards, who are expected to start with one forward, Juan Antonio Pizzi of Tenerife, and flood midfield to deny England the space to work their increasingly effective movements. Venables has spent much of the past 24 hours studying videos of Spain's group performances. 'Their strength is in their team work,' he says. 'I'm a great fan of their coach, Javier Clemente, who took over five years ago, shook the team up and has given younger players the opportunity to develop, very much on the lines I've tried with England. 'They will be difficult to break down, we know that, and Clemente is happy to change his tactics every game to try to get the best out of his team. I don't know why people have got it into their heads that I would have wanted to play Spain in the quarter-finals; whichever side came out was going to be strong.' Venables' association with Clemente goes back to the time the English coach took over at Barcelona and his counterpart had just moved from Bilbao to Espanyol, the second club of the Catal city. 'He's a tough cookie, a difficult customer,' said Venables. 'I had a few run-ins with him over things which must have seemed important at the time but which I can't remember now. 'There was quite a lot of rivalry between the two clubs and we had our little feuds but they never really amounted to much. He is not so much a confrontational man but he does stand his corner. He did away with a lot of the more temperamen tal stars and brought in young players he has developed. He's not the kind of coach to pick the flavour of the week.' Which is why Venables is taking the threat offered by a team unbeat en since the 1994 World Cup far more seriously than those who are talking as if England are already in the final and only have to turn up to win it. Bookmakers' William Hill have cut the odds on an England win in 90 minutes tomorrow from 4-5 to 8-11, and England are 33-1 to repeat the 4-1 scoreline over Holland. The bookies expect to take ú5m worth of bets on the quarter-final, and this in a National Lottery rollover week. Thursday, June 20 1996 By David Walker England will be unstoppable in their quest for Euro 96 glory, according to the man whose team they crushed at Wembley on Wednesday. Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, still shellshocked after Tuesday's 4-1 defeat, said: 'After that result I think England are unstoppable. The way England are playing now makes them my favourites to win the competition.' He was stunned by the passionate crowd reaction inside Wembley as Holland, rated as one of the world's major football powers, were systematically outplayed and outfought and he believes there is a unity between Terry Venables' team and the sporting public that no team will be able to conquer. Hiddink, who singled out Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Steve McManaman as England's key players said: 'When you saw their first game against Switzerland and the first half of their game against Scotland, England were hesitant about how to play. I think they gained a lot of confidence from their victory over Scotland and they showed that confidence against us. I'm being totally realistic when I admit that England outplayed us in every aspect of the game.' His prediction was echoed by Holland's Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp, who said: 'If England play like that they can beat any team.' Venables believes the crowd reaction to the contemporary England team outstrips even the support received by Sir Alf Ramsey's World Cup-winning squad of 1966. He said: 'I have never known an atmosphere inside Wembley to match our last two games, even looking back to the World Cup Final in 1966. It has seemed special in the last two games. 'It was very patriotic before the Scotland game with the singing of the national anthem. Everything was so powerful. I wondered if the fans could follow that up and they did against Holland. It's very helpful. 'It gives the players a lift. It gives them extra reserves. 'We badly need success. When we get a sniff of it, we make a lot of people very happy.' Stuart Pearce, the senior player in the England squad with 68 caps, said: 'Our last two games provided the greatest sense of crowd passion I've ever experienced playing for England. The stadium is packed now with England supporters willing their country on. 'It all started against Scotland and it has snowballed. I think the players are too experienced to get carried along by the euphoria. We have to get our feet on the floor and deal with Spain now.' Spanish coach Javier Clemente, under fire after two disappointing performances before the face-saving 2-1 win over Romania, admitted yesterday that his team must improve significantly if they are to beat England. Clemente, who was involved in a scuffle with a Spanish radio journalist after Tuesday's game at Elland Road, said: 'It didn't matter to me if we played Holland or England . I probably just prefer to take on England and it will suit us to play at Wembley, but we need to raise our game.' Thursday, June 20 1996 Holland were labelled 'The laughing stock of Euro 96' by their nation's best-selling newspaper Telegraaf. 'Shocking, bewildering, disgraceful and scandalous,' it went on, adding: 'Never has a team appeared so keen to be dumped out of a tournament. The Dutch team is the joke of Euro 96.' 'Dutch dull guests at English soccer party,' said De Volkskrant, while Algemeen Dagblad stormed: 'The Dutch were humiliated by England and should be ashamed. Hiddink must have had a complete blackout.' In Spain, El Pais, reported: 'It was a dance, a powerful exhibition. Holland received football blows from every direction.' Marca, the daily sports paper, warned Spanish fans: 'What awaits us!' and added:'Shearer and Sheringham were the perfect double act.' Thursday, June 20 1996 By Jeff Powell We build 'em up to knock 'em down. That's the time-honoured complaint of the British celebrity, most of all the sporting super-star. In particular, it is perceived as a very English syndrome. Especially by the young men who regard themselves as the victims of that national characteristic. In fact, it happens all over the world. Do not imagine that everything's coming up tulips in Amsterdam right now or that the burghers of Bucharest are planning a civic welcome for their toothless Transylvanians. So this was the time for something completely different. By way of a change, to mark the occasion of football's homecoming, we knocked 'em down to build 'em up. Pretty successful it's been, too. A reversal of misfortune. Quite clearly the best thing that happened to England was that their jumped-up antics in the Far East were photographically exposed for everyone back home to see. So vehement was the condemnation of that misconduct - by the public and in columns like this - that these players were left in no doubt as to the high level of application which England expects of them. So closely has their every action been monitored - notably by the fan in the street, the pub and the night-club - that they have been obliged to dedicate themselves to this sporting life. At least until Euro 96 is won or lost. The heat was on, not only at Wembey but also off the pitch. Left with little option but to get their minds and bodies right, they went fishing instead of frolicking and the result was there for all to see...that stupendous 4-1 hammering of Holland. Along with the stygma, the nation was lifted. Actually, the nation did a great deal to uplift itself. Because the forgiveness of the Wembley crowd and the intensity with which it is willing England to perform was a crucial element on Wednesday night and is playing a major part in re-shaping a tournament for which the hosts now find themselves installed as second favourites. Football never went away, as it happens, but it is taking home advantage. Long may it continue. Even Gazza's belligerent gloating, if that's what makes him tick like he did against the Dutch. Certainly the collective resentment, so long as they keep taking it out on the opposition as well as their watch-dogs. Although the hope that it will do so rests more securely in the attitude of Paul Gascoigne's coach and mentor. While his players made their points, Terry Venables was the most understated Englishman in the old stadium. The dignity of the coach whom the Football Association worried might be too colourful and outspoken provided, in the event, an object lesson in how to handle victory with wisdom and good grace. He acted as a sane and cautioning influence on players and public alike. Don't get carried away, he warned. Absolutely. We shall know the full rights and wrongs of Paul Gascoigne's continued involvement once the tournament has run its full course. For the moment it has really only just begun. So if Spain, for a restart, are to be beaten then Gazza and his mates need to stay focussed. No relapses allowed. None of us want to go back to wielding the big stick. Thursday, June 20 1996 The coach back from Wembley on Tuesday night had the excited buzz of a team who had achieved something great. Gazza was rock 'n rolling in the aisles reminding us all, once again, that his dancing feet are not restricted to his exploits on the pitch. When 'Football's Coming Home' came on the video we all broke into song. That single has now become our anthem to and from matches. Understandably, we were all on a high. We owed the Dutch one for some of the previous results they have inflicted on us and, boy, did we stick it to them. Without exception it was the most outstanding international performance any of us had been involved in. It wasn't just the result, it was the style we produced. It must be a very, very long time since an England team have taken apart so comprehensively a side of Holland's reputation. Yet, the mood was not the euphoria you get when a team have won a cup final - more like the excited expectation of a side who have achieved an important result on the way to winning the championship. The job has not been completed. The only player who didn't feel like celebrating too much was Paul Ince. Although delighted at having played his part in helping us reach the quarter-finals, he was really down having received a second yellow card which means he will be suspended for Saturday's match against Spain. He was both upset and angry. Upset because he doesn't want to miss the next game, which will mean he must then fight to get his place back should a winning team reach the semi-finals. Angry because he felt he didn't deserve the booking. He was convinced Jordi Cruyff took a dive. I don't think his demeanour was helped by the fact that when we all met up with our families in the players' lounge after the game his wife Claire was wearing a stunning designer outfit - all in orange, right down to her shoes. Even if it was a Donna Karan number I don't think Incey was too amused! A couple of drinks, though - just a couple - set us all up for a merry journey back to our Burnham Beeches HQ. But once we all sat down for a late night meal of pasta, to replace our lost energy, the mood soon cooled down. Even if we have had delighted ourselves, and the nation, with our performance we quickly became aware that the relief of reaching the quarter-finals means that we've only achieved the bare minimum of what was expected of us before the championships began. Some people might suggest that because of Tuesday night's result we've already done ourselves proud and what follows might not matter. That's not our attitude. Yes, we have proved what we thought all along. We are a world-class side, but having had the taste of success we now want to devour it, so it wasn't long before there was a mood of realism and the need to keep our feet on the ground. That's what happens the further you progress in a tournament so, believe it or not, we were all tucked up in bed early. Not that we haven't enjoyed all the plaudits and most of us were up early yesterday morning to relive the game through the newspapers. It was so nice to read so many good things being said about us. It makes a change! Breakfast was followed by a gentle warm-down training session before we get down today to making our preparations for the Spanish game. Even Gazza had calmed down from the jokes session he had been giving us the night before, although he was still too occupied with the previous night's events to join me yesterday afternoon for another fishing session. Thursday, June 20 1996 The future is bright. The future is white. That was the message from a jubilant England camp as they reflected on their brilliant performance on Tuesday night which made the Orangemen of Holland look more like a bunch of lemons. As Teddy Sheringham, one of England's heroes in the most convincing win over a top-class side in competition football since the 1996 World Cup Final, put it: Terry Venables side destroyed the fabled Dutch style of 'Total football' with their own brand of 'Sheer football'. Such is the confidence and self belief which abounds following the remarkable 4-1 demolition of the Dutch, Sheringham suggests England should now be regarded in the same class as Brazil. A year ago Sheringham made the same claim as England prepared to take on the world champions in the the Umbro Cup. At the time, his assertion was greeted with more than a little derision. After the Brazilians emerged 3-1 winners at Wembley, such scepticism seemed justified but yesterday the smirk of satisfaction on Sheringham's face had that 'Told you so' look. 'I've always believed we could be as good as Brazil because you only have to look at the quality in our squad. We have some unbelievable players,' said Sheringham. 'The trouble is there seems to be this habit for people to build up the opposition and run down what we've got. 'You only have to look at the ability of some of the players we have going forward, like Paul Gascoigne, Steve McManaman, Darren Anderton and Alan Shearer to realise how good we are. If any other country had them people would be saying what a great bunch they are. 'The truth is we are just as capable as any of the top teams in the world, Brazil included, and the sooner people realise that and back us the more chance we will have. 'While we are acutely aware of the need to keep our feet on the ground and not get carried away there is a genuine feeling now that we can beat anybody. The players we have are every bit as good as any others in the tournament. 'We proved that on Tuesday. Not only did we beat a side of Holland's reputation by such a convincing scoreline, we outplayed them with sheer football. 'England teams have beaten good sides in the past but to outclass them the way we did was something special. 'When I said 12 months ago we could be as good as Brazil I really meant it because I could see we were getting there. Terry had come in and decided we had to change our style of play and go the European way and that has helped us. Although I always felt we had world-class players across the pitch before he took over, we weren't playing the right way as a team.' The manner of the victory, as much as the margin, surprised even those who have retained a strong belief in Terry Venables' ability to forge a side which would peak in this tournament. Coincidentally, the first signs Venables saw that it could be possible was in that match against Brazil, which remains the only defeat of his reign. Venables said: 'Even though we eventually lost, for 60 minutes we more than matched Brazil and I then believed that with another year's work we would be good enough to make a serious challenge this summer.' Sheringham feels such a positive vibe only became apparent among the players in the last couple of months leading up to the Championship. He said: 'Ever since Terry took over we have been working on getting the system right and for the players to understand what is required of them. Some of the scorelines and performances early on suggested we were not that good a side but we all believed in the direction we were heading. 'It is since Christmas that things really started to come together, as the displays against Bulgaria, Croatia and Portugal suggested. All that was missing were the goals. But in any one of those matches we created enough chances to have scored four or five.' In that respect, the missing link is Alan Shearer. Having gone almost two years without an international goal - and then absent for most most of the build-up because of a knee injury - he entered the Championship under intense pressure. His response has been to explode and thus challenge Germany's Jurgen Klinsmann for the Golden Boot. Sheringham says: 'Both are top quality but the advantage Jurgen has at the moment is that he has done it over a period of years and when a half chance comes his way he puts it in. Alan is still learning on that front but he's getting there.' Thursday, June 20 1996 Terry Venables had the nation in the palms of his hands yesterday, determined not to let the European Championship slip through his fingers. The spectacular demolition of Dutch football's reputation at Wembley on Tuesday - a night when you couldn't pick a single hole in England - has roused a country whose heroes often go into a spectacular nosedive at the whiff of a title. Of course, it's nowhere near over yet. It's only the quarter-finals we're talking about. But England have only to play three more times as they did against Holland - and 4-1 has suddenly taken over from 4-2 as England's most popular scoreline - and they'll win it, won't they? Venables insists he saw signs of what unravelled before disbelieving eyes on Tuesday developing in the final game of the Umbro Cup a year ago, when England took the lead against Brazil only to be undone by the kind of flourish which left Holland clinging to Euro 96 by the skin of its cuticles. From Christmas onwards the pieces began to fall together. 'Things just don't go right on the night against a team as good as Holland,' said the coach. 'I think this team has yet to realise how good it can be and it's the getting there that matters. 'It has taken time for us to get things the way I wanted them. I asked the players to test themselves in different situations, which isn't easy for them considering the little time we've had together. It's beginning to look natural for them now. 'The movement of the team and the ball is something we've worked on and it isn't easy to pick up the basics right away. We did it a little against the Swiss on the first day and we were getting there against Hungary in the final match at Wembley before the Championship. 'The publicity we had over the weekend and the feeling the players got from beating Scotland made them more determined to want to go out and do it against Holland. This was always going to be a big game and a question of who was going to be the better team. If the Dutch had been better, they could have given us the run around.' But they weren't and they didn't. Inevitably, perhaps, Venables was asked if a performance like this didn't make him want to reconsider his position as England's coach, a situation he manfuactured and which is now beyond redemption. Yes, he was sad, he said, but there was no use crying over spilt resignations. 'It's the way it is. I've known for a long time I was going and I've got used to it but I suppose I can be a bit envious when I see all these young players coming through. But I don't want to dump anything on Glenn (Hoddle). We all know what the situation is.' On his first official day in office on June 1, Hoddle told me that it would be in his and England's interests if he was to take over a winning team, not one which had taken a Euro hounding. He didn't mention champions but he might soon have to.

Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 00:22:30 -0400 From: Eugene <yshtutin@STERN.NYU.EDU> Subject: Euro'96 off day news from ESPNet (06/20/96) INJURIES TO ADAMS, ANDERTON WORRY ENGLAND Reuters _________________________________________________________________ MARLOW, England -- England's Euro 96 euphoria was diluted on Thursday by worrying injuries to Tony Adams and Darren Anderton. Adams, the rock on which England's defense is built, missed training with a recurrence of his knee problem and is now doubtful for Saturday's quarterfinal against Spain. The Arsenal center-half, who has been captaining the side in the absence of the injured David Platt, suffered a similar worry in the build-up to the 4-1 win over the Netherlands. Scar tissue from his January cartilage operation is at the root of the problem. Adams declared himself fit then after a day's rest and coach Terry Venables is hoping that he will receive similar good news on Friday. More disturbing was the absence of Tottenham winger Darren Anderton from training. Although he has yet to capture his best form, he has been influential but could well be ruled out against the Spaniards with a hamstring injury. In his absence, Steve McManaman could switch back to the left with Steve Stone regaining his starting position. It was a double blow for Venables, who is already without key midfielder Paul Ince, suspended for the quarterfinal after two cautions. England, already missing Jamie Rednapp and Steve Howey with ankle injuries, could be reduced to just 14 available outfield players if neither Adams or Anderton recover. There was some good news because Platt, the natural replacement for Ince, has returned to full training while Redknapp and Howey, who both feared they could be out of the tournament, intend to resume light duties. *************************************************************************** SACCHI DISMISSES ALL TALK OF QUITTING By Mike Collett Reuters _________________________________________________________________ ALSAGER, England -- Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi on Thursday dismissed all talk of quitting after his side's elimination from the European championship. Sacchi, who signed a new two-year contract with the Italian Football Federation in March, said at his final news conference before his squad left for home: "I have no intention of resigning. "If my new contract had been conditioned by the results of Euro 96 I would not have signed it," he told reporters before the squad left its training base at the Manchester Metropolitan University sports ground in Chesire. "I have signed a contract only two months ago. I would like to continue as the Italian coach. If they don't want me I will be on the market. However, I would like to remain and continue to work as the national coach. "...I have refused a lot of money to stay with Italy and this should be enough to prove my dedication." Italy were eliminated after being held to a goalless draw by Germany in their final group C match at Old Trafford on Wednesday. A victory would have seen them through to the last eight. Although they finished with four points from their three group games, the same tally as the Czech Republic, they were eliminated because they lost to the Czechs 2-1 last Friday. After Wednesday's disappointing outcome federation president Antonio Matarrese pledged his support for Sacchi. But Matarrese is guaranteed his position only for the next two months when he bids for re-election against Luciano Nizzola, president of the Italian League. Sacchi said that his team would return home with their heads held high. "At the World Cup two years ago we didn't play very well and got to the final. Here in England we did play well and were eliminated. We may have lost but we have not been defeated. "We had three high quality matches against Russia, the Czech Republic and Germany. In our group were teams rated first, second and 10th in the world by FIFA and I think we played better than all of them." Saachi dismissed criticism of the five changes he made for the second group match against the Czech Republic after Italy had beaten Russia 2-1 in their opening match. "(Gianfranco) Zola had serious stomach problems which he had been suffering with for several days and (Pierluigi) Casiraghi had muscular cramps and a fever. "And (Roberto) Donadoni and (Diego) Fuser had played for the second half against Russia. I tried only two new players against the Czech Republic. "We have sowed a lot, we have spent a lot and have not reaped the right rewards. Our harvest has been very poor. "We played well. I still feel that we played better than Germany last night." The one point Sacchi did concede was that a number of Juventus players were "missing" throughout Euro 96. He said that was because of the "extremely tough" European Cup final against Ajax Amsterdam at the end of May. "A lot of the Juve players were drained." Asked what sort of reception he thought the team would get when they arrived home on Thursday night he said: "All of us have done everything we can to succeed here and we go home with our heads held high." As a parting gesture he said Germany, France and England appeared to be the best teams left in the tournament. **************************************************************************** GERMAN COACH: SUDDEN-DEATH SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS By Adrian Warner Reuters _________________________________________________________________ MACCLESFIELD, England -- Germany coach Berti Vogts on Thursday attacked the new sudden-death system which will operate from the quarterfinals of Euro 96, calling it ridiculous and unfair. For the first time at a major championship the team who score first in extra time will win the match. Vogts said UEFA should have kept to the old system where a full 30 minutes of extra time was played. "It's ridiculous," the German trainer said. "There is this talk of fair play. A player only has to make one mistake in the second minute of extra time and it's all over. In the old system a team had 28 minutes to rectify the mistake. "Is this ruling fair? I don't know about that." Goalkeeper Andy Koepke, whose heroics against Italy on Wednesday helped the Germans win group C and earn a quarter-final clash with Croatia, agreed with his boss. "They should have kept with the old rules but the decision is made now. At the end of the day we can't influence it. We just have to hope to win in 90 minutes." Koepke does not think that sudden death will make players more tense during extra time. "You are playing with tension anyway," he said. If no team scores what officials are calling the "Golden Goal" in extra time a penalty shoot-out will follow. The new rule appears to be aimed at reducing the number of penalty shoot-outs which are widely seend as an unsatisfactory way of deciding a match. The 1994 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy was decided by penalties.
