fudbal.1884krimer,

Zasluzano pobedili? Pa, ti mora da nisi gledao utakmicu! Hrvati su bili
bolji tim skoro svih 90 minuta, imali vise sansi...

Nemci NISU zasluzeno u
polufinalu, jer su u dosadasnjim susretima i Italijani i Hrvati bili mnogo
bolji tim. Nemci uopste nisu onako jaki kako ih mnogi predstavljaju. BTW Cira
Bolje reprezentacije

BRITISH TABLOIDS RETREAT UNDER FIRE OVER JINGOISM
By Robert Woodward
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- British tabloid newspapers retreated under heavy fire from
their jingoist heights on Tuesday following widespread criticism of
coverage of the European soccer championship semifinal against
Germany.
The Daily Mirror, which declared soccer war on the Germans on Monday,
declared it was "Peas in our time" 24 hours later by offering German
captain Juergen Klinsmann a food hamper from the luxury store Harrods.
English soccer great Sir Bobby Charlton had accused editors of
inspiring hatred with their anti-German headlines and police warned
xenophobic articles could inflame hooliganism if the host team lost
Wednesday's big match.
"The hooligan element in English football doesn't need any prompting
to indulge in violence against visiting fans. To throw those sort of
people these stories is a green light to go berserk if England don't
win," said Brian MacKenzie, president of the police Superintendents'
Association.
Dozens of people rang the media industry watchdog, the Press
Complaints Commission, to complain of articles many considered racist
ahead of Wednesday's match in the European championship.
Members of parliament put down a motion attacking editors for printing
"jingoistic nonsense" and Lord Healey, a former Labour cabinet
minister, slammed the "grubby little men who write this sort of
trash."
Building on memories of allied victories in two World Wars and
England's defeat of West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, the
Mirror's front page on Monday read "Achtung! Surrender. For you Fritz,
ze Euro 96 Championship is over."
The Times reported Mirror editor Piers Morgans had been severely
reprimanded by company executives and had apologised. In television
interviews, Morgan insisted his newspaper's coverage was meant as a
joke and should not be taken seriously.
On Tuesday, the Mirror's coverage was positively tame and full of
goodwill towards its fellow man, even if it did quote Germans speaking
with funny accents.
The Sun, which called on England to "Blitz Fritz" on Monday, also
toned down its coverage on Tuesday concentrated on backing the host
side rather than attacking the soccer "enemy."
Its editor, Stuart Higgins, said in a television interview he believed
the coverage in some newspapers had got out of hand and was
threatening to spoil the carnival atmosphere of the tournament, the
biggest sports event in England for 30 years.
Others were more outspoken. Herman Ouseley of the Commission for
Racial Equality said the headlines were ridiculous for what was just a
game of football. "It is bordering on the dangerous. Be careful,
editors, you are pushing it a bit too far."
Charlton, one of England's World Cup heroes in 1966, agreed the
coverage could inflame passions to dangerous levels.
"I really wish they would think a little bit more before they put all
this print which creates hatred which for 99 percent of the people is
not there," Charlton said.
Sigmund Sternberg, chairman of the International Council of Christians
and Jews, said the press coverage had substituted a sense of brutality
for one of good sportsmanship.
A sporting occasion had been manipulated to serve crude racial ends,
he said in a letter to the Times.

VENABLES ATTACKS TABLOID PRESS
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
MARLOW, England -- England coach Terry Venables added his voice to the
growing condemnation of the jingoistic tabloid press coverage leading
up to his team's Euro 96 semifinal with Germany.
Venables told reporters at his team's training base at Bisham Abbey
near Marlow: "There have been insults directed at another country
which have gone beyond rivalry in football and that is wrong and not
funny.
"I think anything is fair game as long as it is in the rules. I don't
think the people of this country are very happy with the coverage
either."
Several British tabloids made front page references to World War Two
on Monday. Their coverage was less jingoistic on Tuesday.
Venables played down another issue that whipped the tabloids into a
frenzy on Tuesday -- the fact England will play in their change strip
of indigo blue against Germany.
The shirts are highly unpopular and look more grey than blue.
But Venables insisted: "I am not in the least bit bothered about the
shirts. It's not the colour of the shirts or anything else that
matters, it's what is in them that counts."
Either England or Germany always change their shirts when they meet as
both play in white.
England also changed their shirts for the 1966 World Cup final,
winning the match in red shirts. But they cannot play in red on
Wednesday as their official change colours were lodged with Euro 96
organisers three months ago

ENGLISH HOPES, HYPE REACH FEVER PITCH
By Graham Griffiths
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- As English expectation reached fever pitch on the eve of the
host team's Wembley showdown with Germany, the French were quietly
planning their strategy in a bid for Euro 96 glory.
The England v Germany semifinal has gripped the imagination of the
home nation, provoking sections of the British tabloid press to
jingoistic heights and overshadowing Wednesday's other tie between
France and the Czech Republic.
England's prospects against the Germans were summed up by their
combative midfielder Paul Ince who said on Tuesday "we will never have
a better chance of beating them."
Ince, who returns to the side after being suspended from Saturday's
quarter-final against Spain following two yellow cards, added: "We are
playing well, full of confidence, the whole nation is behind us and we
are playing at home."
England coach Terry Venables's main concern is over the fitness of
another midfieder, Paul Gascoigne, who was injured against Spain.
"It may be a gamble for me to play him," Venables said. "He has a
bruised and twisted ankle and, although he trained this morning and
was moving well, the time factor is important."
Venables is to make the final decision on Wednesday.
Juergen Klinsmann, the major weapon in Germany's armoury, ruled
himself out of the semifinal after tearing a calf muscle in Sunday's
win over Croatia.
"For tomorrow there is no question of me playing," he said. "I will
sit on the bench and cheer on my teammates. If there is a glimmer of
hope I can play in the final, I will go for it."
French coach Aime Jacquet goes into the semifinal at Old Trafford
almost certain not to tamper with arguably the best defense of the
tournament.
Jacquet has not revealed whether he intends to move Marcel Desailly up
into midfield to replace the suspended Christian Karembeu.
It appears more likely he will replace Karembeu with Sabri Lamouchi
and leave the successful center-back partnership of Laurent Blanc and
Desailly untouched.
France, seeking to emulate their 1984 European finals triumph, have
conceded just two goals in the tournament -- one in open play against
the Spanish and the other to a brilliant free kick by Bulgarian Hristo
Stoichkov.
The Czech Republic were facing mounting problems. Already without four
key men through suspension, they could also lose the services of
Patrik Berger, their top marksman in the qualifiers.
Coach Dusan Uhrin said Berger, who has not trained for two days
because of a fever, had only a "50-50" chance of being fit and an
extra striker, Radek Drulak, was standing by.
As bookmakers made England joint 15-8 favorites with France to win
Euro 96, the British government and opposition stepped into a row over
the "soccer war" declared by tabloid newspapers, urging the press to
keep calm.
A spokesman for the foreign office said: "It's right to be patriotic.
But we don't think that sporting events like this should be made a
reason for antagonism against other countries."
Even Wimbledon has not escaped the football fever.
At the world's most famous tennis tournament, the players are
constantly bombarded by the question -- who will win the European
championship?
Boris Becker, one of the German team's biggest fans, even confessed he
preferred watching soccer to tennis.
But he has stopped going to matches now as "I have got to take care of
business here at Wimbledon."

KLINSMANN FACTOR TO HAVE MAJOR BEARING ON SEMIFINAL
By Lawrie Morrison
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- The Klinsmann factor is bound to have a considerable bearing
on Wednesday's European championship semifinal between Germany and
England.
Germany's "psychological leader" will miss the Wembley showdown
because of a torn thigh muscle.
The Germans are renowned for their professionalism in adversity, but
then losing Juergen Klinsmann is something else.
He is one of the world's deadliest marksman, having scored 38 times
for his country.
How will Germany cope without him against an England defense which has
been pried open only twice in four Euro 96 matches?
Franz Beckenbauer, as inspirational as Klinsmann when he captained
Germany in their 1974 World Cup triumph, has his doubts that they can
ride the body blow of losing their current captain.
"It will be very hard," he said. "We still have a very good team but
Juergen is such a key player. In front of their own crowd England are
probably favorites."
Goalkeeper Andy Koepke, who has played a key role in Germany's less
than impressive run to the last four, said that without Klinsmann they
had to pull together as a team.
"Juergen is a great loss because he is our playmaker and psychological
leader who lifts us to new heights," Koepke said.
Klinsmann's only hope of lifting his teammates Wednesday will be from
the confines of the substitutes' bench.
"We have to think positively," he said. "At the 1990 World Cup we had
a tight win over the Czechs in the quarterfinals but came back to beat
the English in the semifinals."
Certainly, coach Berti Vogts was remaining positive about the loss of
his top striker.
"There is nothing we can do about it so we are just going to have get
over it," he said.
While all Germany bemoans the loss of Klinsmann, Czech coach Dusan
Uhrin faces the daunting task on Tuesday of overcoming the loss of
four players for the semifinal against France.
Defenders Radek Latal and Jan Suchoparek, midfielder Radek Bejbl and
striker Pavel Kuka are suspended after falling foul of referees.

CROATIA FEDERATION REJECTS COACH'S RESIGNATION
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
ZAGREB -- Croatia's soccer federation has rejected coach Miroslav
Blazevic's resignation after the team's Euro 96 exit, saying he must
honour a legal contract.
"I think this (resignation) was only a moment of weakness and anger,
but nothing that will last," federation deputy director Vlatko
Markovic told Reuters on Tuesday.
"We neither have another candidate for his post nor do we contemplate
(choosing one)," he said.
"Resignation is out of question," Markovic told the Novi List daily
earlier in the day. "Blazevic has signed a contract with the Croatian
football federation. That contract is a law that must be respected."
Blazevic was quoted by another newspaper, Vecernji list, on Tuesday as
saying his resignation would stand.
But on his return to Croatia later on Tuesday, Blazevic said on
Croatian radio: "I am in a big dilemma because it is evident I lost
credit with those who are the most important, that is, our fans...
"Certainly I'm in trouble and I have to think seriously whether to
continue or not. I think we showed we were the best European team
especially in the match with Germany. The foreign press is unanimous
in its judgement of us being the best."
Croatian newspapers reported that Blazevic was deeply disappointed by
Sunday's 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Germany. He quit the following
day.
No one could rule out Blazevic returning quickly since he enjoys
strong support from Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, who likes to
involve himself in key sporting issues.
Newspapers quoted Blazevic as saying he had been forced to quit by
hostile fans and media.
"You attacked me when there was no reason for that and behaviour of
the fans was just their reaction to your writing," Novi List quoted
him as telling Croatian reporters in London.
After taking over as Croatia coach in March 1994, Blazevic compiled an
impressive record of 16 wins against just three defeats.
The charismatic Blazevic's decision to rest several key players for
the group match against Portugal drew widespread criticism in Croatia.
The 3-0 defeat meant a quarter-final against the then favourites
Germany.

SACCHI'S DAYS LOOK TO BE NUMBERED
Italian soccer bosses have hinted that Arrigo Sacchi's days as national team
coach may be numbered following his side's dismal showing in Euro 96. The
Italians admitted the decision to give Saachi a contract until the 1998
World Cup was a mistake. Giancarlo Abete said: "It was a mistake not to
have a revocatory clause in the coach's contract."

MALDINI TIPPED AS SACCHI'S SUCCESSOR
Italy's U21 and Olympic team coach Cesare Maldini, father of star defender
Paolo, has been tipped as a possible successor to Arrigo Sacchi. But if
Sacchi is to be dismissed it will be a costly business for the Italian
Football Federation. The Federation would have to pay out his salary of
ú850,000 a year until his contract expires in 1998.

ESPN2 showed this game late last night on tape delay. What a horrible
game. First, they used an announcer from SportsCenter to do play-by-play,
which really sucked, and then they went to commercials during the game.
This was a warm-up for the US Olympic Team, and if they continue to play
this way, they'll be lucky to beat Tunisia. Their defense is absolutely
atrocious, they stand there flat-footed with their fingers up their
nose. I have no idea what formation that was they used last night, with
1 striker, 5 midfield, and 4 defense. The US dominated the first half,
and easily should have had 2 more goals, which Lalas headed into the
crossbar. Keller saved the US's butt in the second half with incredible
saves, he stopped 3 one-on-ones in the second half. The second half was
absolutely miserable for the US, they just stood around watching South
Africa. Keller couldn't have done anything about Fortune's goal, it was
just a great shot, but the second goal wasn't really his fault. The
defenseman just figure when they are being pressured they can just pass
back to Keller and everything is ok. So they pass back to him and there
are already 2 or 3 South Africans rushing the ball at this time, so
Keller does his best to clear the ball. When South Africa sends the ball
back in, lovely Lalas just whiffs at it, getting all air, and now there's
the fourth one-on-one of the second half, and Keller did his best.
Thank god the US has Kirovski, Reyna, and Keller. They played
fantastic. Hopefully, Lalas will too. Also Frankie Heydyk is a pretty
good player. I just don't understand why someone like Kirovski is not a
starter on the U-23 team. Anybody out there have any idea why?

LETCHKOV HEADS FOR FRANCE [Tuesday, June 25 17:33]
Iordan Letchkov, one of the few good performers in a disappointing Euro
96 for Bulgaria, has
signed for 'reborn' French giants Marseille. Letchkov, previously with
Hamburg in the Bundesliga
has signed a three year deal with the newly promoted side. Arsenal,
Cologne and Werder Bremen
were reportedly interested in signing the balding midfield star but the
lure of the south of France,
and a large number of francs no doubt!, has proved too great.
SOFIA, June 28 (Reuter) - Bulgarian international striker Emil Kostadinov
has signed for Turkish
champions Fenerbahce, Bulgarian newspapers reported on Friday.
They said Kostadinov signed the contract, initially for one year but with
the option of a second, in
Istanbul on Thursday.
The 28-year-old, who has has scored 19 international goals, was
officially contracted to
Portuguese first division club Porto, but they loaned him to Spain's
Deportivo Coruna in 1994 and
Germany's Bayern Munich last year.
Newspapers said Fenerbahce would pay Porto $660,000, and a further
$990,000 if he extended
his contract for a second year.

Torpedo Moscow's European ban lifted
(Recasts with ban lifted)
LONDON, July 1 (Reuter) - European soccer's governing body UEFA said on
Monday it had lifted a ban on Russian club Torpedo Moscow taking part in
European competition.
UEFA, who earlier announced that Torpedo would continue to be suspended
until they had paid off a debt to Austrian club VfB Moedling, said Torpedo
could take part in European competition next time they qualified.
But they said Torpedo must still pay Moedling for the transfer of Andrei
Kalaitchev and refused to lift a 20,000 Swiss francs ($16,000) fine.
Moedling have requested $250,000 for Kalaitchev, who spent one season with
them before returning to Russia to play for Torpedo. He played 10 matches
for Torpedo and is no longer registered as a professional.

TV RIGHTS TO 2002, 2006 WORLD CUPS GO FOR $2.2 BILLION
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
ZURICH -- Bavarian media mogul Leo Kirch and Swiss marketing agency
ISL won a battle for television rights to the 2002 and 2006 World Cup
finals on Wednesday with a bid of 2.8 billion Swiss francs ($2.24
billion), FIFA said.
The Kirch group and ISL bid 1.3 billion Swiss francs ($1.04 billion)
for the 2002 rights and 1.5 billion Swiss francs ($1.20 billion) for
the 2006 rights.
ISL is 90 percent controlled by Sporis Holding AG, a Swiss company
owned by the German Dassler family, former owners of Addidas. The
other 10 percent of ISL belongs to Japanese advertising agency Dentsu.
The 2002 finals, the first to be staged in Asia, will be co-hosted by
South Korea and Japan. Germany is the front runner to host the 2006
tournament.
FIFA said in a statement that the vote to accept the Kirch-ISL bid
came after a prolonged discussion at an executive committee meeting.
"In both cases, the rights are worldwide except the United States,
which will be commercialised separately," it added.
Delegates said earlier the committee turned down a request by a public
service broadcasters' consortium, led by the European Broadcasting
Union (EBU), to be allowed to raise its reported initial bid of 2.2
billion Swiss francs ($1.76 billion).
This consortium was given the rights nine years ago to the 1990, 1994
and 1998 World Cups.
The second highest bid for 2.7 billion Swiss francs ($2.16 billion)
came from the U.S.-based International Management Group (IMG), run by
leading sports agent Mark McCormack.
FIFA said seven bids were received originally. Three -- from Walt
Disney subsidiary ABC Television, the Swiss agency TEAM, and CSI --
were eliminated before its finance committee met on June 17 to
consider the remaining four.
These four bidders were Swiss company CWL, the U.S.-based
International Marketing Group (IMG), the EBU-led consortium and
Kirch-ISL.
FIFA recalled the EBU-led consortium won the rights for the 1990, 1994
and 1998 World Cups for an original total value of 340 million Swiss
francs ($271.3 million), excluding the United States.
But the consortium contract has been increased for 1998 because of an
increase in the number of teams in the finals from 24 to 32, it said.
As a result, the total 1998 worldwide rights, including FIFA's
agreement with ABC Television for the United States, now amount to 230
million Swiss francs ($183.5 million).

BOSNIA AMONG SIX NEW FIFA NATIONS
By Stuart Doughty
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
ZURICH -- Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of six countries which will join
soccer's expanding world of nations on Thursday when the International
Football Federation formally admits it at its Zurich congress.
The move by FIFA to admit the war-ravaged state into its ranks is a
rubber-stamping of an earlier decision but still comes as a boost to
Bosnia and a snub to UEFA, European soccer's governing body which only
last month delayed a similar measure.
UEFA postponed its decision for two years but FIFA, the sport's
international governing body, said it was following the example set by
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations.
FIFA president Joao Havelange said the decision had been sanctioned by
the executive committee on Wednesday, along with acceptance of five
other new soccer nations.
"We do not talk politics, only sport," said the Brazilian FIFA
president in response to a question about why FIFA had admitted the
former Yugoslav republic but UEFA had not.
"The IOC and other organizations have accepted Bosnia-Herzegovina so
we do not see how we can deny the right to this country to participate
in competitions," he added.
Bosnia -- where a 60,000-strong NATO-led force is keeping a
still-fragile peace -- already had provisional FIFA membership and has
been included in the qualifying competition for the 1998 World Cup
finals in France.
The Bosnians face two other former Yugoslav republics, Slovenia and
Croatia, in European zone group one. They kick off on September 1
against Greece and will also play Denmark.
A UEFA spokeswoman confirmed on Wednesday that a decision on Bosnia
would not be taken before UEFA's next Congress in 1998.
"From our point of view the situation is still not very clear because
there are three federations in the same country," said the
spokeswoman, referring to Bosnia's effective ethnic division between
Moslems, Serbs and Croats.
By delaying the decision for two years, UEFA can still admit Bosnia in
time to include them in the next European championship qualifying
tournament for the 2000 finals.
Bosnia, whose proclamation of independence from Yugoslavia in 1992
unleashed three years of war, played its first international soccer
friendly against Albania last November.
The other countries being admitted into FIFA on Thursday are Andorra,
Anguilla, Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands and Guam.

HANDS OFF SHEARER, BLACKBURN WARNS
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- Blackburn issued another hands-off warning to English
premier league rivals Manchester United over Euro 96 top scorer Alan
Shearer on Wednesday.
United manager Alex Ferguson has his sights set on prising the England
marksman away from Blackburn in time for United's European Cup
challenge next season.
"We have had an enquiry from Manchester United but have told them that
Alan Shearer is simply not for sale,'' said Blackburn chairman Robert
Coar, just days after millionaire benefactor Jack Walker took an
identical stance.
Walker had said: "There is no way Alan Shearer is going anywhere. He
wants to play for us next season.''
Any deal would certainly shatter the 8.5 million pounds sterling
($13.25 million) British transfer record set by Liverpool when they
signed striker Stan Collymore from Nottingham Forest last year.
Shearer, who hit five goals in Euro 96, was the country's leading
marksman last season with 37 goals, becoming the first striker to
achieve 30-goal hauls in three consecutive seasons in the top flight.

ENGLISH FAN MAKES OFF WITH GERMANY'S EURO 96 BALL
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- An English soccer fan has taken revenge on Euro 96 winners
Germany.
Peter Gibbons, 33, is refusing to give the Germans their ball back
after Sunday's final, remembering how in 1966 German player Helmut
Haller made off with the World Cup final ball.
It was eventually tracked down earlier this year and has now been
returned to English hat-trick scorer Geoff Hurst.
Gibbons smuggled the Euro 96 ball out under his shirt on Sunday after
it was booted into the Wembley crowd by a jubilant player as the game
ended.
Gibbons told Tuesday's Sun newspaper: "I call it poetic justice."

PARIS ST. GERMAIN SIGNS BRAZIL'S RICARDO AND LEONARDO
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
PARIS -- European Cup-Winners' Cup champions Paris St Germain will
stick to their Brazilian tradition next season after hiring former
Benfica defender Ricardo as manager with midfielder Leonardo their
main playing recruit.
Ricardo, who left PSG for Benfica two years ago, will replace Luis
Fernandez, who has moved to Athletic Bilbao, but with different
functions.
Club president Michel Denisot told a news conference on Tuesday he
wanted to emulate the structure of English clubs and appoint a
manager, Ricardo, and a trainer, former French international
goalkeeper Joel Bats.
"After three years with Artur Jorge and two with Luis Fernandez, we
needed to change our structure. Ricardo will be in the same position
as Kevin Keegan at Newcastle," Denisot said.
"Like Luis Fernandez when he took over in Cannes a couple of years
ago, Ricardo has no coaching experience. This is the sort of challenge
we like at PSG," he added.
Denisot confirmed the expected transfer from Japan's Kashima Antlers
of 26-year-old Brazilian international Leonardo to replace Youri
Djorkaeff, who has left for Internazionale.
He added that midfielder Daniel Kenedy would sign from Benfica at the
end of the week before leaving for Atlanta with the Portuguese Olympic
team.
"It may look a modest recruiting but we managed to keep 80 per cent of
our French internationals. Leonardo may not sound like a big name to
you but he does to me," Denisot said.
Brazilian playmaker Rai and Panama's striker Julio Cesar Dely Valdes
remain with PSG next season.

FIFA AGREES TO STEPS FOR 2002 WORLD CUP CO-HOSTING
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
ZURICH -- Top officials of world soccer body FIFA met on Tuesday to
work out first steps in organising the 2002 World Cup finals, which
are to be jointly hosted by South Korea and Japan.
FIFA decided last month that the two Asian rivals should co-host the
tournament after bitter campaigning by the two countries made it
impossible to choose between them.
A three-man working group, comprising FIFA vice-presidents Guillermo
Canedo of Mexico and Antonio Mattarese of Italy and FIFA general
secretary Sepp Blatter, met on Tuesday.
They agreed that each of the three should draw up a checklist of
organisational points requiring clarification and that they would meet
again informally during the Olympic soccer tournament in Atlanta later
this month.
They will hold their next formal meeting in Zurich in September and
will invite Japan and South Korea to send delegations to that meeting.
The working group will visit Japan and South Korea in the second half
of this year for discussions with government officials and aim to
report back to the FIFA executive committee when it meets in Barcelona
in December.

PORTUGAL'S FUTRE IMPROVES WEST HAM'S FUTURE
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- Portuguese international striker Paulo Futre joined West Ham
on Tuesday on a two-year contract with an option for a third year, the
club's assistant manager Frank Lampard said.
Futre, 30, was signed on a free transfer from AC Milan where he played
just four games last season because of a knee injury.
"I have had a bad time and a difficult operation but I've been
training since March and I'm now okay,'' he said at the club's Upton
Park ground. "I hope nothing will happen again.''
Futre joins a foreign legion at West Ham which includes Croatian
Slaven Bilic, Denmark's Marc Reiper, Czech Ludek Miklosko and
Romania's Ilie Dumitrescu.
He started his career at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Atletico
Madrid, Porto, Benfica, Marseille, Reggiana and Milan.
"He is quick and skillful and will scare a few defenses,'' Lampard
said.
Defender Richard Hall, 24, was also introduced on Tuesday as a new
West Ham signing.
The former England under-21 captain quit premier league Southampton
after failing to agree new contract terms with the club.
The fee for his transfer will be decided by a tribunal, with
Southampton demanding around 1.5 million pounds ($2.3 million).

ENGLAND TO PUSH FOR 2006 WORLD CUP
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LONDON -- England on Monday launched a bid to stage the soccer World
Cup in 2006, after its success in being host of the European
championship.
The English Football Association (F.A.) announced the bid after
Virginia Bottomley, the minister responsible for sport, told
Parliament that the government would support an offer from the F.A.
"in every way possible.''
She praised the "phenomenal success'' of Euro 96 and added: "To have
the World Cup would be a great triumph and a great day for Britain.''
F.A. chief executive Graham Kelly said: "It's the next logical step
for us. Nobody can question any longer our ability to stage the
biggest sporting events in the world.''
England played host to the World Cup in 1966, when it beat Germany 4-2
in the final.
Germany, which played host to the 1974 World Cup, has lodged an
unofficial bid with FIFA, soccer's world governing body, to host the
2006 finals.
The F.A. is hoping the success of Euro 96 will persuade UEFA, the
European governing body, to back its candidature.
UEFA president Lennart Johansson met Kelly on Monday to discuss
England's bid.
It is believed that England will try to persuade Germany to drop its
interest in playing host to the 2006 World Cup and concentrate instead
on the 2004 European championship.
Kelly said: "One of our earliest actions will be to speak to the
German F.A. and advise them that we are entering the arena. We could
compete against each other but I know UEFA would not want that.''
Bottomley praised those involved in Euro 96 and said: "I think Britain
has regained our reputation of being able to host world sporting
events.
"I most certainly hope this may lead to the World Cup and many other
international events.''

MILAN -- George Weah, soccer's World Player of the Year, will sing and

They said the AC Milan striker would join Italian blues musician
Zucchero and some of Africa's top bands in the "WorldRhythm Festival''
at the San Siro soccer stadium on July 17.
The musicians taking part include Senegal's Youssou N'Dour, Guinea's
Mory Kante and Salif Keita of Mali.
Organisers said that the money raised would help ``projects of the
World Food Programme which is helping Liberian refugees in Ivory Coast
and Guinea as well as in Liberia.''
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation warned last month that
Liberia, with tens of thousands fleeing the country after recent
fighting, faced severe food shortages and possible starvation if a
fragile peace accord failed.
Weah, a hero in Liberia, has been active in raising international
concern about his country's troubles and has also been financing its
World Cup campaign.

CZECH FAN DIES IN FRONT OF TV AS TEAM LOSES
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- A Czech soccer fan died of a heart attack in
front of his television set here Sunday while watching his team lose
2-1 to Germany in the Euro 96 final, the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes
reported Monday.
"It was an immediate heart stoppage,'' the paper quoted a first aid
assistant on the scene as saying.
Another Prague fan suffered a heart stroke as well during the game,
but survived, the paper reported.
Tens of thousands of fans crowded Prague Old Town Square to watch the
game but dispersed peacefully after the defeat.
Despite the defeat, Czech newspapers were full of praise for the
national team.
"A Big Thanks Boys'' said the tabloid Blesk while the daily Pravo led
its front page with the headline: "After a Big Fight We Lost, But We
Did Not Fail.''
"The Close of a Championship That No One Will Forget,'' read the
headline on the sports page of the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes.

Argentina look to salvage World Cup campaign in Peru
LIMA, July 6 (Reuter) - Argentina will try to forget last month's
ignominious 2-0 defeat to Ecuador and put their World Cup campaign
back on track when they face a new-look Peru in a South American
qualifier on Sunday.
But the Argentines may be without top striker Gabriel Batistuta, who
has reportedly pulled out for family reasons.
The absence of Batistuta, who needs just one more goal to overtake
Diego Maradona as Argentina's all-time leading scorer, would further
encourage an already upbeat Peru.
"It would be a relief not to have Batistuta coming at us," said
coach Juan Carlos Oblitas, who has named Brazilian-born Julio Cesar
de Andrade "Julinho" in his side for the clash in Lima.
Peru's soccer federation pushed through Julinho's nationalisation
last week and world soccer body FIFA has allowed him to play for his
adopted country even though he once represented Brazil in a
friendly.
Julinho teams up with burly striker Flavio Maestri in a repeat of
the strike force which led Peruvian champions Sporting Cristal to a
2-0 victory over Argentina's River Plate in May.
"The mood is really positive," Julinho said. "We're looking for the
victory."
After losing 4-1 to Ecuador in the first qualifying match, Peru drew
with much-fancied Colombia and convincingly beat Armenia in a
warm-up for Sunday's match.
In stark contrast, Argentine football is at a low ebb now Maradona
has bid farewell to the international stage.
The team fell apart after the 35-year-old midfielder was thrown out
of the World Cup in the United States for failing a dope test, and
while Argentina are still favourites to qualify for France in 1998,
they will be in grave danger of missing out if they lose again.
"Normally a draw against Argentina is a good result but with things
as they are we have to believe we can win," said Oblitas, who played
for Peru against current Argentine coach Daniel Passarella.
If Batistuta does not play, Passarella will put his faith in Abel
Balbo of Italy's Roma and Claudio Cannigia of Buenos Aires side Boca
Juniors.
Probable teams:
Peru (from) - Julio Balerio, Manuel Marengo, Jose Soto, Juan
Reynoso, Percy Olivares, Juan Jose Jayo Legario, Jose Carranza,
Nolberto Solano, Flavio Maestri, Julio Cesar de Andrade, Roberto
Palacios, Pablo Zegarra.
Argentina - German Burgos, Javier Zanetti, Roberto Ayala, Roberto
Sensini, Jose Chamot, Diego Simeone, Matias Almeyda, Hugo Morales,
Arnaldo Ortega, Abel Balbo, Claudio Cannigia.
