iznad ostalih. Po kvalitetu, naravno. Na istoku, to su Čikago, Njujork, Atlanta
i Orlando.

Chuckie Brown i MArk Bryant...
Houston se možda zeznuo, ali, ko zna...
Barkley bi svakom timu mnogo značio, ali je istina da je star, kao
i Olajuwon...
i često povređeog Kevina Johnsona... Videćemo!

Kume, mislim da grešiš. Barkli lovi titulu već par godina, a ni Hjustonu
nije pravo što je izvisio ove godine. Ono, jes' da je Čikago najjači, ali
oni nisu ni dogurali do finala.
Hori i Kasel nisu

sada imati i u Lakersima opasnog protivnika, a Houston takođe
neće biti nimalo lak zalogak (ali to će trajati možda samo 1-2
godine, jer su im trojica najvažnijih igrača već stari...)

Yugoslav point guard says he will sign with Trail Blazers
PORTLAND, Ore. (Sep 17, 1996 - 18:17 EST) -- Aleksandar Djordjevic,
who helped Yugoslavia win a silver medal at the Atlanta Olympics, said
he will sign a contract with the Portland Trail Blazers next week.
The 6-foot-2 point guard said at a news conference in Belgrade on
Tuesday that he was leaving for Oregon on Wednesday.
"By transferring to Portland, part of my dreams have come true,"
Djordjevic said, "and if I stay in America, it means my quality has
been confirmed."
Blazers president Bob Whitsitt confirmed he has been talking with
Djordjevic and that the Yugoslavian star was coming to Portland this
week. No contract has been signed, Whitsitt said.
"I'm optimistic," Whitsitt said. "We think he's a good player and
obviously could make a good addition to the team."
Djordjevic, who called himself "the best playmaker in Europe," said he
would sign a one-year contract. Whitsitt said that the Blazers had
salary room to sign Djordjevic without making any other player moves.
Djordjevic, 28, has played in Italy the past few seasons. He is known
for his passing and shooting, Whitsitt said.
"For starters, he's a great free throw shooter. He shoots in the
mid-80s," Whitsitt said. "He's a very good playmaker and a very good
shooter, an excellent 3-point shooter. Like a lot of point guards, his
strengths would probably be more at the offensive end than the
defensive end."
Djordjevic said he expected to be a reserve but has been promised he
would get ample playing time.
The starting job will go to Kenny Anderson, who was signed by the
Blazers to a seven-year, $46 million contract as a free agent during
the off-season.
Djordjevic said he was "looking forward to play with Arvydas Sabonis
from Lithuania, one of the best centers in the world."
Sabonis is entering his second season with the Blazers.
Whitsitt said that, like Sabonis, Djordjevic would be no typical
rookie in his first NBA season.
"He's been a premiere player in Europe for a number of years,"
Whitsitt said. "He has a lot of big-time international experience.
Although he doesn't have NBA experience, he is a different kind of
rookie, just like Sabonis was a different kind of rookie."
The Blazers have been troubled in recent years by a lack of depth at
point guard and have had to pick up a free agent during the season,
usually from the Continental Basketball Association.
At his news conference, Djordjevic said he was donating to charity the
$20,000 he received from the Yugoslav government for helping to win
the silver medal.

nba.1164junior,

svega toga. Ovde ćete moći da nađete statistike i preglede svih utakmica,
tablice, tekuće statistike igrača i timova, opise svih važnijih događaja
koji se budu dešavali tokom sezone, razne kritike, prognoze, intervjue,
analize i mnogo štošta još.
Prije nego što krenemo, par napomena. Rezultati, pregledi i statistike
slične dvaput mjesečno, a detaljan pregled učinka svih igrača i timova i
"All time" statistike jednom mjesečno. Mislim da je tako najpodesnije;
ako neko ima neki bolji predlog, neka kaže, uzeće se na razmatranje. :)
E pa, onda da krenemo. Prvo ide pregled utakmica odigranih juče, kao i
vijesti u posljednjih nekoliko dana. Večeras ću gledati da pošaljem
statistike svih ostalih odigranih utakmica. Od sutra nastavljamo po
rasporedu. :)
Šta još da vam kažem nego - uživajte! :))

CHARLOTTE (86) AT NEW YORK (113)
Patrick Ewing scored 12 of his 16 points in the first quarter as
the New York Knicks opened a 26-point lead and breezed to a
113-86 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in their home opener.
John Starks scored 17 for the Knicks (2-0), who never trailed
and beat the Hornets for just the second time in eight games.
New York used first-quarter spurts of five, six, 14 and 10
points to run away from Charlotte (1-1), which lost for the
first time under new coach Dave Cowens.
"I'm not surprised we played so well together," Ewing said. "The
first game we were kind of stuck in mud but tonight we came out
and executed."
The teams engineered a big off-season trade that saw the Knicks
acquire forward Larry Johnson for New York native Anthony Mason.
Johnson finished with 12 points and Mason, who is bitter toward
Knicks management, received a resounding cheer from the Madison
Square Garden crowd and scored 10.
"At first I was intimidated by the Garden," Johnson said. "I
was ready to play. I wasn't really nervous. I just wanted to
go out and try to put on a show for the fans and my team."
"It definitely felt good," Mason said of the greeting. "When
you come out, play hard and come to work every day, people
appreciate it no matter where you are. It felt real good to get
that reception."
Charlie Ward scored the game's first five points. A basket by
Vlade Divac cut the deficit to four before Buck Williams -- who
started for suspended forward Charles Oakley -- hit two jumpers
and a layup to give New York a 13-4 lead.
Dell Curry, who scored 38 points in Charlotte's opener, made a
jumper before Ewing scored six points and Johnson four in a 14-0
run. Ewing's 17-footer made it 27-6 with 3:44 to play in the
period.
The Hornets pulled wihin 27-11 on Curry's three-pointer before
the Knicks scored the last 10 points of the quarter, including
four by Ewing, for a 37-11 lead.
"It felt good," Ewing said. "We clicked on all cylinders
tonight. We were moving the ball, playing great defense. It was
a terrific game for us. We made a conscious effort to play
great individual defense."
New York shot 65 percent (15-of-23) in the quarter while holding
Charlotte to 36 percent (5-of-14).
"We didn't play very well today," Cowens said. "We started the
game slowly and couldn't match their intensity from the outset.
They shot extremely well. It's as simple as that. They were
ready and we weren't."
It was more of the same in the second quarter. A free throw by
Mason cut it to 41-17 before the Knicks scored 11 of the next 14
points. Rookie John Wallace scored four points and Starks had
five, including a layup that made it 52-20 with 6:55 remaining.
Starks scored 12 points in the quarter, which ended with New
York holding a 70-36 advantage. The Knicks opened their largest
lead at 85-47 with 4:10 left in the third quarter on a jumper by
Allan Houston, who scored 14 points.
"You always want to play well in your first home game," Houston
said. "The way we started off really aggressive, that took the
pressure off me. We were really playing hard. Plus, when you
have a 10-point lead, you can score and really have fun."
Wallace also scored 14 points and Ward added 11 for the Knicks.
Anthony Goldwire scored 17 points, rookie Tony Delk added 14 and
Curry 12 for the Hornets.

"I thought we played well in spurts," Nuggets coach Bernie
Bickerstaff said. "Both teams scrapped defensively. I was
impressed with our intensity and effort, the little things
defensively."
Sean Elliott scored 17 points and Avery Johnsson added 14 for
the Spurs (0-2), who again played without injured All-Star
center David Robinson and made a team record-low nine baskets in
the first half. The two-time defending Midwest Division
champions have lost their first two games for just the second
time since joining the NBA in 1976.
"We played hard," Johnson said. "You never like to lose, but it
is a long season. This is like two steps in 5,000-meter race."
Elliott's three-pointer with 6:20 left in the first quarter gave
the Spurs a 16-12 lead. But San Antonio missed its next 15
shots as Denver went on a 24-6 run. Ellis had six points and
McDyess four in the burst.
"I thought we played a great first half," Ellis said. "We want
to win whether David is out there or not."
A basket by Johnson with 7:06 left in the second quarter ended
the drought and pulled the Spurs within 36-24. But the Nuggets
continued to build the lead, opening a 52-32 advantage on Ervin
Johnson's hoop with two minutes left in the half.
San Antonio was 9-of-37 (24 percent) from the field and trailed
52-34 at halftime. The field goals matched the nine it made in
the second half at Seattle on March 6th, 1981.
Vinny Del Negro had seven of his 11 points in the third quarter,
when the Spurs cut the deficit to 64-54. They closed to 75-69
on a steal and basket by Johnson with 3:33 to play, but Pierce
made two free throws and Dale Ellis sank a three-pointer to give
the Nuggets an 80-69 bulge with 2:32 left.
Bryant Stith scored 12 points, McDyess had 10 rebounds and Mark
Jackson had 10 assists for Denver, which shot 39.5 percent
(32-of-81).
Charles Smith had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who
shot 32 percent (24-of-75). Reserves Dominique Wilkins and
Vernon Maxwell, signed to give San Antonio an offensive boost,
were a combined 2-of-22 from the field.
"We all have to realize that this is what we got and this is
what we are working with," Smith said. "No matter what happens,
we all have to play together."

GOLDEN STATE (105) AT VANCOUVER (95)
Chris Mullin scored 24 points, including the 15,000th of his
career, to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 105-95 win over
the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Golden State won the game with just eight players. Joe Smith
was in uniform, but did not play because of a bruised right
ankle. Felton Spencer, Donald Royal and Jon Koncak, who were
acquired Saturday from Orlando for Rony Seikaly and Clifford
Rozier, have yet to join the team.
"That's a lot isn't it?," said Mullin about his milestone. "It
shows that you've been playing a long, long time, but it feels
really nice to win and that's more important. We really
struggled on opening night and we had only eight guys, but we
went out there and we got the win tonight. The win is a lot
nicer than that other stuff."
Vancouver tied the score at 88-88 with 5:36 to play on Anthony
Peeler's jumper, but Golden State pulled away. B.J. Armstong
hit a layup, Ray Owes nailed a jumper and Latrell Sprewell added
a three-pointer.
"I was sure happy to get that three-pointer to go," Sprewell
said. "Those guys were coming back and that was a big momentum
shift for us. We knew we were undermanned, but we moved the ball
and played well defensively. Some good things happened."
After the Grizzlies' Blue Edwards scored on a layup, Mullin hit
a pair of free throws to cap a 9-2 run and give the Warriors a
97-90 lead.
Peeler scored 21 points and Bryant Reeves added 17 points and 10
rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost five all-time meetings
against the Warriors. Shareef Abdur-Rahim finished with 14
points and George Lynch added 11 off the bench.
"I'm still searching for a good starting rotation," said
Vancouver coach Brian Winters. "I like the way George Lynch
played tonight. He gave us a real spark off the bench and got
us back in the game."

MINNESOTA (85) AT LA LAKERS (91)
Shaquille O'Neal had 35 points and 19 rebounds as the Los
Angeles Lakers used a 20-2 run midway through the fourth quarter
to propel them to a 91-85 victory over the Minnesota
Timberwolves.
Nick Van Exel had 13 points and 11 assists and Corie Blount
added 12 points off the bench for the Lakers, who opened with
consecutive wins for the first time since starting the 1987-88
season 8-0.
"I just played well, made a lot of shots," said O'Neal. "My
teammates made me look good tonight. I could not have done it
without Nick and Eddie (Jones) giving me the ball. Our main goal
is to win."
Tom Gugliotta registered 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Kevin
Garnett and James Robinson scored 12 points apiece for the
Timberwolves, who missed their first ever 2-0 start. Minnesota
fell to 0-8 all-time in road openers and lost for the 13th time
in their last 15 meetings.
Minnesota led 74-65 following Gugliotta's three-pointer and a
basket by Sam Mitchell with 10:35 left in the fourth. But
Blount scored six points, Byron Scott added five and O'Neal
tallied the last five points, including a three-point play while
being held by James Robinson on a twisting layup for an 83-76
advantage with 3:36 to go.
"People can saw you hung close with them and be satisfied, but
we have to able to win those types of games," said Timberwolves
coach Flip Saunders. "We beat ourselves. You can not make those
mistakes against that team in that building."
The Wolves pulled within 87-83 on a three-pointer by Robinson
with 42 seconds left. However Scott hit two free throws and
O'Neal followed with a dunk, improving the Lakers to 23-6
all-time against Minnesota.
"Shaq was the difference in the game. He was huge at both ends.
Everyone will talk about his 35 points and 19 rebounds, but the
big thing was defense," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "We got
very active on defense in the second half. We planned to be
more aggressive. We just did what we needed to do, but Shaq took
it to another level defensively."
Gugliotta had 11 points and Garnett added eight to pace
Minnesota to a 47-40 halftime lead.
Eighteen-year old Los Angeles guard Kobe Bryant became the
youngest player to appear in an NBA game. He missed his only
shot and grabbed one rebound in six minutes.
"I think it went well," said Bryant about his debut. "I am just
happy to get the victory. It's basketball. It's something I
have been doing all my life."

Mashburn will be active for season opener
DALLAS (Oct 30, 1996 - 15:06 EST) -- Dallas Mavericks forward Jamal
Mashburn will suit up for Friday night's season opener and could play,
depending on his recovery from knee surgery that caused him to miss
most of last season.
"I don't know if I'll even play or how much, but I'll be suited up and
ready to go," said Mashburn, who last week expected to start the year
on the injured list.
"I went through a full practice (Tuesday) and I feel OK. Unless I have
some major setback, I hope to contribute and start working my way back
in."
Dallas has 14 players on its roster and likely will put two players on
the injured list to get down to the 12. Those two probably will be
rookie Samaki Walker and journeyman Greg Dreiling.
Mashburn, who played only 18 games last season before experiencing
pain in his knee, had been headed for a minimum absence of five games.
He had arthroscopic surgery Feb. 13.
"It looks like Jamal will be ready to take part, so we'll use him,"
said Mavericks coach Jim Cleamons. "We're going to do what's best for
him and we won't push him by any means.
"But if he's ready to help us, we'll take it."
The Mavericks had trimmed their roster to 14 by waiving Terry Davis,
Jimmy King and Herb Jones. Dallas must still pay Davis' $2.28 million
salary even if he is picked up by another NBA team. King is guaranteed
$330,000.
"We want to be competitive," Cleamons said. "How can I look my team in
the face and talk to them about winning if we don't do everything to
win? Why invite people to camp if they really don't have an
opportunity to make the team?"
Walker, a first-round pick from Louisville, had been projected to
start at power forward, but couldn't practice because of thigh
problems.
Free agent Erick Strickland beat out King for the fifth guard spot.
But Strickland, who has a sore right shoulder, also could start the
season on the injured list.

Smallest Pacer faces big challenge in second season
INDIANAPOLIS (Oct 30, 1996 - 15:06 EST) -- Travis Best, the smallest
member of the Indiana Pacers, could face the biggest challenge.
The 5-foot-11 Best starts his second NBA campaign at Detroit on
Friday, seeking to retain the starting point guard position role coach
Larry Brown now has given to four different players in as many
seasons.
Brown has specific demands for the position, ideas he learned playing
point guard under Dean Smith at North Carolina and carried into the
ABA, where he was a three-time All-Star.
Vern Fleming, Haywoode Workman and Mark Jackson also have been used at
point guard since Brown arrived in 1993.
"The point guard has to be someone with good athletic skills,
unselfish and a leader," Brown said. "He's the guy who runs the
offense and also has to be a good defender.
"It's not an easy job. We felt Mark did it, but we traded him because
we felt we needed to go in a different direction.
The Pacers defeated Orlando and San Antonio last weekend to finish the
preseason 5-3.
"Travis really showed a lot of progress the last two games," Brown
said. "... I like the way Travis is starting to learn, even though
it's been kind of rocky for him."
Best, a first-round draft pick who was a three-time all-conference
first team selection in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference, missed 13
games in his rookie season with an ankle injury and nine more when
Brown kept him on the bench. He played less than 10 minutes per outing
in 59 games as a reserve, but demonstrated the athletic abilities
attractive to Brown late in the season and in the playoffs.
Best admits he heads into his second season with room for improvement.
"I'm not really playing the way I want to play," Best said. "I feel
like I'm getting better. I'm learning more of what the coaches want of
me, and what the team needs of me."
At Georgia Tech, Best became the second player in ACC history to
record more than 2,000 points and 600 assists. He says he needs to
become more aggressive on the court, especially on offense.
"I think defensively, I've been playing pretty well," he said. "I just
need to keep away from some of the silly fouls that were a problem in
the preseason. Offensively, I need to be more aggressive, more
assertive, basically just look at the basket a little more."
Heading into training camp, Best was expected to contend with Jalen
Rose for the starting job.
"He's very versatile. He has a lot of heart. He wants to win, and he's
definitely a plus for us," Best said of the 6-8 Rose, acquired in a
trade that sent Jackson to Denver.

Bryant will miss at least two games
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Oct 30, 1996 - 18:48 EST) -- Kobe Bryant's debut
with the Los Angeles Lakers won't come before the team's third game of
the season at the earliest, and he might be placed on the injured
list.
Bryant, making the transition from high school to the NBA, will miss
the season-opener against Phoenix on Friday night and the second game
against Minnesota on Sunday night because of a strained left hip
flexor, said team spokesman John Black.
Both games will be played at the Forum. The Lakers play four games
next week -- at New York on Tuesday; at Charlotte on Wednesday; at
Toronto on Nov. 8, and at home against Atlanta on Nov. 10.
Bryant, who turned 18 on Aug. 23, was injured in the Lakers' preseason
game against Philadelphia on Oct. 18.
He missed the first two games of the preseason while recovering from a
fractured left wrist, and the final four after the hip injury. He
totaled 21 points in the two games in which he played.
"He's making some improvement," Black said Wednesday. "But he's still
several days away, at least. He's not even ready to begin practicing
yet. Even when he reaches that point, he's going to need several days
of practice before he's ready to play.
"He's going to be out for the weekend. That's probably the best case
scenario. There's even a possibility we will put him on the injured
list tomorrow."
If that should happen, Bryant would be required to miss at least five
games.
Bryant, a 6-foot-6 guard, was the 13th player taken in the NBA draft
in June. He was selected by Charlotte, then traded to the Lakers for
center Vlade Divac.
Bryant and Portland's Jermaine O'Neal will become the two youngest
players in NBA history when their careers begin. O'Neal also is 18,
but younger than Bryant.
Black also said that forward Jerome Kersey, who suffered a fractured
left foot during the preseason, would be placed on the injured list
Thursday.

Bryant enters NBA wise beyond his years
(Oct 30, 1996 - 09:24 EST) -- Watch Kobe Bryant play, or speak to him,
and you want to check his birth certificate. So much poise, so much
maturity ... he couldn't really be 18, could he?
Yes, he is. And there's a good reason why the Lakers' prodigy doesn't
act his age, why his head seems to have scarcely been turned by his
first exposure to life as a professional.
He's seen a lot of it before.
Joe "Jellybean" Bryant was a professional basketball player for 16
seasons, eight in the NBA, eight in Europe. Where Joe went -- be it
Philadelphia, San Diego, Houston, or Italy -- so did wife Pam,
daughters Sharia and Shaya and son Kobe.
Along the way, Joe and Pam taught their children how to treat people,
how to put things into perspective, how to be decent human beings.
"It's just meeting so many different people at an early age, being
exposed to so many things," Joe Bryant, now 42, said. "Now when a
situation comes up he knows how to act because he's been there before.
By traveling, seeing different cultures, different philosophies of
life, you tend to have more confidence in yourself."
On the eve of his big adventure -- his first NBA season, which
officially begins Friday night when the Lakers play Phoenix at the
Forum -- Bryant shows that the lessons have been taken to heart.
He defers to his older teammates. He treats fans and media members
with respect. And he hasn't allowed himself to be overwhelmed by the
good fortune that has come his way -- a three-year, $3.6 million NBA
contract, an endorsement deal with adidas, two appearances in TV
sitcoms, a guest spot with Jay Leno and the prospect of more Hollywood
activity, now that he has his Screen Actors Guild card.
"I learned to enjoy the game, and to enjoy life in general," Bryant
said of his father. "I think that's a very important lesson,
especially at this particular time in my life. There's a lot of people
out there who have high expectations, pressures and so forth, and that
can take some of the fun out of the game."
Rest assured, there will be high expectations, even though Bryant will
have the luxury of being broken in slowly, groomed for the future.
The urban legend that developed out of his feats as a high school
player, both during the prep season and in summertime pickup games
against the likes of current Lakers teammate Eddie Jones and the
Philadelphia 76ers' Jerry Stackhouse, created the image of a future
superstar.
It didn't hurt his reputation when Lakers vice president Jerry West,
talking about Bryant on draft day well before the Lakers acquired him,
called him "a potential star," and "an incredible prospect,"
Combine that with a winning personality -- winning enough to make
Bryant the only one in this year's NBA rookie class to be represented
by the William Morris Agency, a powerhouse of the entertainment
business -- and you have the object of envy, or admiration, for every
18-year-old whose first job out of high school pays the current
minimum wage of $4.75 an hour.
Consider: Bryant's rookie salary is $1 million. Divide that by the
hours required for regular-season games, practices and travel --
approximately 951 hours from Nov. 1 to April 20 -- and you have an
entry-level wage of $1,051.52 an hour.
Then again, if a young man is paid like a professional, it behooves
him to act like a professional. Some of the NBA's young millionaires
never get that hint. Bryant, apparently, learned it well before the
moment in April when he told a news conference at his suburban
Philadelphia high school that he was turning pro.
All he had to do was observe the way his father handled success and
failure.
"We never really brought work home, as far as being mad at the coach,
talking about the refs, things like that," Joe Bryant recalled. "Kids
pick up a lot of things. If I come home and I didn't have a good day
or we lost the game, I (didn't) want that to reflect on what Kobe
believes ... he must form his own opinion of life and his experiences,
and how to handle those situations."
Joe Bryant's NBA career probably could best be described as that of a
journeyman. At 6-10, he was an inside player who played with flair but
probably wanted to do more fancy stuff with the basketball than his
coaches felt comfortable with. Still, he averaged 8.7 points and 4.3
rebounds in 606 career NBA games, before carving out a successful
career in Italian ball.
When the Bryants moved to Italy in 1983, Kobe was 4, and sisters
Sharia and Shaya were 7 and 6, respectively. The family had to become
close-knit, at least while they were in the process of learning the
language.
"We didn't have anybody to depend on but our family," Kobe recalled.
"We had to stick together."
The family remains tight, to the point that everyone packed up and
moved from Philadelphia -- where Joe Bryant resigned his post as an
assistant coach at La Salle -- to L.A. to be with Kobe and help him
deal with the new demands on his life.
"He invited us," Joe said. "I'm sure that as time goes on, he's going
to probably become more independent. But I tell him, 'We're still
going to be your parents."'
Among the things Joe and Pam will do is help Kobe sort out all of the
offers and requests he will receive, so that he can manage his time
and concentrate on basketball.
Eventually, the endorsements and TV appearances and other ancillary
issues will all hinge on just how successful Bryant can be on the
floor. He hasn't had much opportunity to provide clues during the
exhibition season, missing the first two games while recovering from a
fractured wrist and sitting out the last four with a strained hip
flexor. That injury even could keep him out of Friday night's opener,
although Bryant said he's confident he'll be able to play.
As the first non-big man to attempt to make the jump from high school
to the pros, Bryant originally was criticized and his game downgraded
by NBA observers. His workouts for NBA teams before the draft removed
some of those doubts, and his performance in four LA Summer Pro League
games (25 points, 5.3 rebounds a game in four games) swayed some more
opinions.
But he has yet to be tested on the big stage, and he probably will
have some tough moments.
"Guys study tapes," Lakers veteran Byron Scott said. "They'll find out
what he likes to do and his patented moves, which way he likes to go
and his favorite shot. Then they'll try to take that away. And with
his being 18, you've got veteran guards who are physical, and they're
going to try to beat him up physically and get in his head.
"If I didn't know he was 18, I would have thought he'd played four
years of college and was 22 years old. His mind and maturity level
right now are both farther along than those of rookies who go through
four years of college."
Joe Bryant has, naturally, played a role in developing Kobe's skills,
both through instruction and through some intense one-on-one games.
Dads tend to shy away from such confrontations once their sons are
capable of beating them, but Joe says he's not to that point yet.
"I still get out there and school him," he laughed. "And I always win
because I'm the referee and the scorekeeper.
"When we play, we won't go out like we're going after each other. It's
more working on different moves, or I'll cut his right hand off so he
has to go left, things like that. I could never play him straight up."
Does Joe give him a taste of physical play?
"Oh, we've been doing that for years," he said. "I remember people
being concerned because he's playing against grown men. Shoot, I'm
6-10, 260. They don't get much bigger than me."
At this point, Bryant isn't exactly a candidate as spokesman for any
"stay-in-school" campaigns. But that could change, too. He bypassed
college basketball but says he plans to pursue a college education,
first by taking courses over the Internet and eventually by physically
attending classes, maybe even during the season.
"Why not?" he said. "I've been doing it my whole life."
Bryant scored 1080 on his SAT (on a scale ranging from 400 to 1600),
and college was a viable option.
"I was sure that I couldn't go wrong either way I decided," he said.
"I knew that if I'd gone to college I'd have gotten a great education
and played basketball, which I love to do very much, and met some new
people. If I went to the NBA, I'd play basketball, still have the
possibility of getting an education, and get to meet some new people.
"I want to have children one day. If I'm telling them to go out there
and get their education, and they look at me and say, 'Dad, you never
even went to college' ... that's something I don't want."
He might be a pretty eloquent spokesman after all.

NBA board approves payouts to low revenue teams
NEW YORK (Oct 30, 1996 - 20:01 EST) -- The NBA Board of Governors
approved a plan Wednesday to provide up to $3 million per year of
financial assistance to low-revenue teams.
Between five and eight teams are expected to qualify for the payments,
which will come from a special account the league has been
accumulating for four years.
"We've been leaving it there for what we'd call a rainy day, and it's
just begun drizzling," commissioner David Stern said last week.
The fund, which has grown to about $50 million, came from market
extension fees -- money paid into a central fund by teams that
broadcast their games beyond a 75-mile radius.
The NBA Planning Committee recommended that it be redistributed to
needy teams who are at an economic disadvantage because of their
market size.
At least three NBA teams lost money last season, and several others
were at the break-even point.
With the salary cap due to rise above $30 million in the next few
years, and with teams required to spend at least three-quarters of
that amount on player salaries, some owners have been worried that
they won't be able to turn a profit without assistance.
"You have to be a relatively small market and have revenues that don't
go beyond a certain level, and you have to meet certain criteria to
establish that your team is being run properly," deputy commissioner
Russ Granik said.
For example, the Milwaukee Bucks play in one of the smaller markets in
the league and make only a fraction of the local broadcast revenue
that large market teams such as New York or Chicago make.
If the Bucks satisfy all the criteria in the plan approved Wednesday,
they would receive anywhere from a few hundred thousand dollars to as
much as $3 million.
"We won't know until the end of the season which teams qualify and how
much money they will be able to receive," Granik said.
nba.1208vpoznanovic,
Eastern Conference won't be so bullish now
(Oct 30, 1996 - 07:54 EST) -- Michael Jordan's full-season return last
year might have stupefied the NBA's other teams, which promptly made
way as the Bulls got off to a 41-3 start and stampeded to the
championship.
There will be no such reverence toward His Airness this time.
The Knicks, for one, are tired of all this Bull. They put themselves
in position to challenge for the title by undergoing a drastic
makeover in the offseason, landing free agents Allan Houston, Chris
Childs and Buck Williams and trading for Larry Johnson.
The small-market Indiana Pacers are bent on continuing to make noise
in the postseason. They invested $116 million to keep three key
members of the team, Reggie Miller and the Davis tandem, Dale and
Antonio.
And although the Orlando Magic were sent reeling by Shaquille O'Neal's
defection to the Lakers, another power may be emerging in the East.
Thanks to commissioner David Stern's not-so Solomonic decision to
return Juwan Howard to Washington, the Bullets look primed to overcome
years of ineptitude and join the ranks of contenders.
Perhaps more important than the competition, the Bulls themselves seem
to lack the single-mindedness that made them nearly invincible last
season.
"It would be inhuman for us to have the same intensity now," reserve
guard Steve Kerr has said. "The entire focus of this season is to be
healthy and strong down the stretch. If we struggle a little early,
that's the way it's got to be."
That's not much of a crack, but it might be just enough.
A preview of the Eastern Conference in predicted order of finish, with
last season's record in parentheses:
New York (47-35): Patrick Ewing, still searching for his first
championship at 34, remains the centerpiece. But the Knicks have
diversified the offense with the offseason acquisitions. They've also
shed their plodding ways and made themselves younger, drafting three
talented forwards in the first round. Syracuse product John Wallace
has the best chance to see significant minutes among the three.
Childs is the biggest question mark on the team, and probably the key
to its title hopes. If he can play up to his second-half standards
last season, when he made the Nets forget about Kenny Anderson, the
Knicks have a bargain.
It behooves coach Jeff Van Gundy, in his first full season, to keep a
close eye on the team's chemistry. John Starks says he's accepted his
role as sixth man, but that may not last if sharpshooter Houston
struggles early. Veteran Williams was brought in for just such a
situation. The Knicks hope he provides a steadying influence as well
as solid rebounding all the way to the NBA Finals.
Chicago (72-10): This is essentially the same cast that ran roughshod
through the league last year. So why vote against them? Call it a
hunch. More accurately, call it the natural byproduct of success --
complacency.
Jordan and Dennis Rodman got their huge contracts in the offseason.
The championship has been attained. Even the incentive of playing for
the best mark ever is gone. What's left?
"I'm going to be pressed to find a lot of motivation," said coach Phil
Jackson. "Yet again, I trust the fact we have guys on this ballclub
who know the importance of doing their job."
Chicago will still be a formidable team and should battle for its
fifth title in the '90s. But "One more for the thumb" didn't work as a
battle cry for the Steelers. It says here it won't for the Bulls
either.
Indiana (52-30): This veteran club hopes a youngster will emerge at
the point and lead them deep into the playoffs.
Jalen Rose, acquired in the Mark Jackson trade, has looked good in the
preseason. However, the job still belongs to Travis Best, the Pacers'
top pick in last year's draft and a favorite of coach Larry Brown.
The Davises and Derrick McKey anchor a strong frontcourt that will be
bolstered by center Rik Smits when he returns from surgery on both
feet.
Washington (39-43): Nobody in the East boasts a more imposing
frontline than the Bullets, with Howard, Chris Webber and the vastly
improved Gheorghe Muresan.
The Bullets have filled their hole at point guard with the mercurial
Rod Strickland and have added bench scoring with 3-point specialist
Tracy Murray.
If coach Jim Lynam can figure out what makes Strickland tick, this
team will explode.
Orlando (60-22): You almost feel bad for the Magic, which did
everything in its power to keep O'Neal and still got ditched. The pity
lasts only until you ponder another postseason getting bombarded by
the obnoxious sounds and sights at the O-rena. Good riddance.
Actually, the Magic should still make the playoffs. Penny Hardaway was
outstanding during Shaq's injury absence last season and will get a
chance to show his real worth. But even he can't make up for the abyss
in the middle and the shallow bench.
Miami (42-40): When uber-coach Pat Riley stops moaning about losing
Howard on a salary cap technicality, he might realize he's got some
pretty good talent here.
Alonzo Mourning loves playing for Riley almost as much as he loves his
new $110 million contract, and second-year forward Kurt Thomas seems
ready to emerge. Riley was able to lure tough defender P.J. Brown and
keep rejuvenated point guard Tim Hardaway.
But he'll keep lamenting the one who got away.
Atlanta (46-36): There's still a franchise here? With all the hubbub
about the Olympics and the Braves, it's easy to forget. As if to send
a reminder, the Hawks spent $50 million on center Dikembe Mutombo.
The shot-blocking machine says now he actually wants to take some of
his own. Good luck with Mookie Blaylock, Steve Smith and Christian
Laettner around.
Cleveland (47-35): "Tyrone Hill is looking like the old Tyrone Hill,"
said coach Mike Fratello, whose Cavs could use the toughness under the
boards the former All-Star provides.
Fratello says he'd like to can his slo-mo offense and send greyhounds
Terrell Brandon, Chris Mills and Bobby Phills running. But then he
adds, "Just because it's slower doesn't mean it's uglier."
Detroit (46-36): Upon the news of Allan Houston's signing with New
York, the Detroit Free Press ran this headline: "Houston? We have a
problem." The defection rocked the Pistons, who say they never got a
chance to make a counteroffer.
There are rumblings now that franchise swingman Grant Hill blames
Houston's departure on hard-driving coach Doug Collins, who would not
win a popularity contest in his own locker room. The Pistons picked up
Stacey Augmon and Grant Long from Atlanta for next to nothing, but
that may not be enough to continue Detroit's ascent.
New Jersey (30-52): Forward Jayson Williams will again finish among
the league leaders in rebounds and funny comments, which come in handy
when playing for such a bad club. The Nets were among the
worst-shooting teams in the NBA last year, and that's not likely to
change unless stringbean center Shawn Bradley suddenly becomes a force
in the middle. Right.
The five-year, $15 million contract of rookie coach John Calipari has
already aroused plenty of jealousy among his peers, who will be all
too happy to bury the Nets in the Meadowlands muck.
Charlotte (41-41): Muggsy Bogues is still limping and Anthony Goldwire
has been a bust in the preseason. The Hornets may open the season with
Tony Smith as their starting point guard. Need to know anything more?
This is a team that traded Larry Johnson and potential superstar Kobe
Bryant for Anthony Mason (who doesn't want to be there) and the
underachieving Vlade Divac. Dave Cowens must have wanted to get back
into coaching real bad.
Milwaukee (25-57): After failing to revive this moribund franchise as
coach and GM, Mike Dunleavy was removed from the bench. He's still in
the front office, however, and his relationship with new coach Chris
Ford may dictate the future of the Bucks.
Dunleavy did leave behind a decent foundation with forwards Vin Baker
and Glenn Robinson, but the latter's monstrous contract limits
Milwaukee's maneuverability. The Bucks added veterans Armon Gilliam
and Andrew Lang, and maybe rookie Ray Allen will fill the vacuum at
shooting guard.
Boston (33-49): The Celtics are thrilled with No. 1 pick Antoine
Walker, who represents the future. That's a good thing, because the
present is horrid. Boston gave up the second-most points in the league
last year and didn't do a thing to shore up its defense.
Pervis Ellison is unhappy playing center, Dee Brown hates the sight of
anything green, and the fans are yearning for the good old days at
"the Gahden." Celtic pride, catch it if you can find it.
Philadelphia (18-64): Last year's numbers were so staggeringly bad as
to seem comical. The 76ers ranked no better than fourth from the
bottom in several significant categories in a league comprising 29
teams.
The draft's No. 1 pick, erratic point guard Allen Iverson, will make
new coach Johnny Davis pull out his hair at least a couple of times a
game. But Philly does have some talent, including Jerry Stackhouse,
Derrick Coleman (remember him?) and Clarence Weatherspoon.
Toronto (21-61): Damon Stoudamire and rookie Marcus Camby are pretty
good starting points for a new franchise. After losing three starters
to free agency, the Raptors picked up Walt Williams and Popeye Jones
at bargain prices and added a fine shooter in Hubert Davis.
So even though the team won't be any good, Raptors management at least
has a clue about what it's doing. It will help if Darrell Walker, a
curious choice as the new coach, does too.

NBA's birthday boils down to a blatant bash
(Oct 30, 1996 - 09:12 EST) -- The NBA officially turns 50 on Friday.
But the party began early.
Chicago's record-breaking 72-victory regular season and 1995-96
championship only signaled the start of a gala off-season.
Dennis Rodman staged his own mystery wedding. He showed up as the
bride. Does that make him Dennis Rodwoman, too?
Dennis Rodman got a big raise, $10 million.
Dennis Rodman began production on his MTV show, which will air this
fall. He taped a David Letterman segment in which he and Dave played
two-on-two against Siskel and Ebert. Two thumbs sprained.
Michael Jordan made a feature film with Bugs Bunny. Jordan has his own
cologne -- one part charisma, one part Wallenda, one part sweat, one
part success. Eau de dough.
Michael Jordan got a gigantic raise, $35 million.
Shaquille O'Neal shifted the balance of power -- behind Chicago, that
is -- from East to West by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal
then trashed former coach Brian Hill, nudging a reporter while saying,
"I'm just glad coach Del Harris knows something about the game."
Shaquille O'Neal got a stupefyingly high raise, $117 million.
Charles Barkley bashed Orlando for losing O'Neal.
"I compare it to when Milwaukee lost Kareem," Barkley said. "Only the
Magic didn't get anything back. They're one ACL away from being back
in the lottery."
Grant Hill, punk.
Hill is shown receiving bad-guy lessons from Bill Laimbeer in his
newest FILA ad. In Detroit's media guide, Hill lists his favorite
movie as "Scarface" and his favorite musical artist as Tupac Shakur,
who recently was shot to death.
"There is an edge to Grant this year," said Pistons coach Doug
Collins. "He has a whole different persona. He has even developed a
pretty nasty tongue. In fact, he is one of the best trash talkers on
the team."
"I'm going to start calling him Charles Barkley," Joe Dumars said.
Grant Hill hated his Dream Teammates at the 1996 Olympics. Every last
one of the guys on the Dream Team felt he was the best player in the
world.
"I came away from that more grown up, with less respect for them as
players and as people," Hill said. "At times I felt like I was the
most mature guy there."
Grant Hill became the anti-Barkley.
Cedric Ceballos bashed the Houston Rockets for adding Charles Barkley.
"Putting a bunch of old guys together" is the way Ceballos described
the Rockets' off-season tinkering.
Charles Barkley bashed Cedric Ceballos.
"We are an old team. I'm surprised Cedric is smart enough to know
that," said Barkley, who once said the Suns would have won the 1993
title if Ceballos had not gotten hurt in the Western Conference
finals. "But we won't take no spring break in the middle of the
season."
Dan Majerle's shot is on vacation his first season with Pat Riley in
Miami.
"I'll get it going eventually," said Majerle, a seven-year Sun. "I'm
just not used to playing that much defense."
New Philadelphia owner Pat Croce gave Jimmy Buffett a rubdown.
Croce, a big fan and a former physical therapist, supplied Buffett
back massages on consecutive nights during a summer concert tour to
ease persistent lumbar pain.
Now, Croce wants to stage a Parrothead Night for Buffet backers at the
Spectrum this season. Also in the works -- Hawg Night. Croce rides a
Harley-Davidson in a biker gang.
New Milwaukee coach Chris Ford laid down the law -- no cellular
telephones or pagers in his locker room.
Like guns in the Old West, "you have to check them at the door," Ford
said.
After a 22-day protest holdout, Shawn Kemp got a whopping raise, which
includes a $14.6 million balloon payment in 2002, $3.6 million in
incentives and a $2.1 million interest-free loan.
Brian Williams will not take a big raise. The Clippers have offered
$12 million over three years. He wants a monster raise, $35 million
over five.
Jim McIlvaine got a surprise raise, $35 million over seven years.
Xavier McDaniel got the minimum -- $247,500 -- to come back and jack
some jaws for New Jersey.
"You're talking about a guy who can beat somebody up," said new Nets
coach John Calipari. "If we're in any fights, we win. Basketball
games, we're not sure about yet."
Scottie Pippen may miss the start of the regular season after
off-season ankle surgery. He has not played in the preseason.
"That's not such a bad thing," Jordan said. "This will take some of
the expectations away, but I like to think we are mature enough not to
try to live up to expectations, anyway."
Rodman was AWOL from a preseason game. Rodman lost $15,000 in three
hours of craps in Las Vegas last weekend, when female admirers tried
to get his attention by grabbing his butt.
Dennis Rod-manservant Jack Haley did not get a raise. He got cut.
"They are all waiting for me to screw up," Rodman said. "I don't need
a baby sitter."
Every Western contender save Utah made a big-name, big-money change to
try to catch the Bulls.
"If there is good chemistry, you can be all right," said Indiana coach
Larry Brown. "It certainly helps to keep a team together, though I
don't think that's going to be the norm anymore.
"You look at baseball. When I was growing up I could tell you the
batting order and batting averages for teams. Now I read a box score,
I can't even tell you what team I'm looking at.
"I dread that day happenning to us. That would be a big mistake."
Magic Johnson bought 5 percent of the Lakers and retired.
"I'm happy right now," Johnson said. "There's no juice left. My juice
has already flowed. I closed the book. It's closed now, and I'm happy
with that closure."
nba.1210vpoznanovic,
Suns roster will be proving ground now that Barkley has departed
PHOENIX (Oct 30, 1996 - 09:36 EST) -- The Phoenix Suns are no longer a
destination point for the proven superstar.
Charles Barkley is gone. Kevin Johnson is injured again. And Danny
Manning is back for the first full season after his second knee
surgery.
Instead, coach Cotton Fitzsimmons sees a proving ground, for both the
booty from the Barkley trade -- Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Mark Bryant
and Chucky Brown -- and those still standing in Phoenix.
It is one of the reasons Fitzsimmons believes the Suns may surprise
doubters in Year 1 after Chuck.
"A lot of guys on this team have a lot to prove, for many different
reasons. They want to show people, 'Hey, we can play. We know how to
play. We're good,"' Fitzsimmons said. "I don't know why they
(ex-Rockets) wouldn't feel that? You think the Phoenix guys have that
after being in the shadow of Barkley? I don't know why they wouldn't?
So all that's going for us. That's just a natural thing for any
player. He likes to be recognized for what he does."
Fitzsimmons plans to give them all a chance to make a name for
themselves after a disappointing 41-41 season in 1995-96 in which
coach Paul Westphal was replaced just after the new year.
Fitzsimmons calls this his deepest, most versatile and most athletic
team and plans to tweak the game plan accordingly. The Suns will run a
triangle offense and also use a two-man game when they set up, but
they would rather run, period.
If the plan to install a trapping, rotating, pressure defense takes,
the Suns may most resemble the first several teams in Fitzsimmons'
second go-round, which began in 1988, when they had a 27-game
improvement over the previous year and re-entered the NBA elite.
Pacific Division rival Seattle has given the Suns a defensive model to
follow.
"I hope by the time the season is over we can get as good
(defensively) as Seattle. Those guys are great. If we get that good,
I'll be proud of this team," Horry said.
Manning will play both forwards and center and also will be used to
bring the ball up the floor against all but the most agile big men.
Bryant and John Williams, both out for a month, will play center and
big forward when they return.
Horry will post up but will also shoot three-pointers, as he did in
Houston during the Rockets' consecutive NBA championship runs in
1994-95. Michael Finley, a Dan Majerle clone, will play small forward
and big guard. He also can defend the point. Cassell and Johnson, when
he returns from a double hernia operation in six to eight weeks, will
play either guard spot.
A.C. Green and Wayman Tisdale will finally be able to get some big
minutes at power forward, now that Barkley is not spending all his
time there. But the Suns know they will miss Barkley.
"There are certain things he brings that nobody in the whole NBA could
bring, things we won't have," Johnson said. "Who is going to get you
10, 12 boards a game? Who is going to make that big block at the end
of the game?
"Before, Charles would cover up all the mistakes we made and still
make us play well. If we are to be successful, our team will epitomize
team basketball."
Off guard Wesley Person did not step up when the Suns called on him to
score last season, after letting Dan Majerle and Danny Ainge leave.
But Person has the purest outside shot on the team and again will be
expected to provide perimeter punch. Newcomer Rex Chapman has an
outside shot, too.
The leader any given night, however, could be a function more of
playing time and opportunity baskets than anything else.
"Nobody will be out there stepping around, just watching other players
play," Finley said.
Not only are the Suns a team without a star, they also are a team
without a starting lineup. While it seems clear that Manning, Finley,
Cassell and Horry will get plenty of minutes, Fitzsimmons is a
match-up guy, preferring to tailor his lineup to the one his opponent
throws out.
Joe Kleine may start against the bruisers of the league -- Shaquille
O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shawn Kemp. Then again, the Suns beat the
Lakers in Tucson last week with Green assigned to O'Neal.
The Suns can play big -- Kleine, Green, Manning, Finley and
Johnson/Cassell.
They can play small -- Manning, Horry, Finley, Wesley Person,
Johnson/Cassell.
They can play in-between -- Tisdale, Manning, Horry, Finley,
Johnson/Cassell.
"I'll play with my lineup all year long. With our versatility and our
depth, that's our strength. For me to say so-and-so and so-and-so are
going to start all 82 games, no matter what, I'm not going to do it
that way," Fitzsimmons said.
One thing seems certain -- the Suns will be better defensively without
Barkley, who most often saved his defense for the fourth quarter.
"I think we'll probably do a little more trapping, because we have
such good athletes. It makes sense to me. Why would we want to stand
up and go one-on-one against a big physical team? Make them get the
ball out of their hands. Let's play off our quickness," Brown said.
The new attention to defense "isn't lip service," new assistant coach
and head-coach-in-waiting Ainge said.
"My job is to make them accountable. I think we spent a lot of time in
practice focusing on the defense" in previous years, Ainge said.
"But we had offensive-minded players who would turn it on defensively,
on and off, and because we didn't have a parity on the roster," those
players would play.
Fitzsimmons does not foresee a problem getting his players to accept
their roles.
"Anybody can come off the bench. Everything is here," Fitzsimmons
said, pointing to his left temple.
"Are you tired this morning? It's all here. If your mental outlook is
good about coming off the bench, then you'll play well. If your mental
outlook is bad ...
"That will be the real key, everybody learning to play a role and
doing whatever they can to make this team a success."
Brown said he is willing.
"Some of us do have something to prove. Sometimes when you play with a
so-called superstar, it makes things easier for you. But sometimes
people think your game is based on what they do, and you can't do
anything for yourself," Brown said.
"Sure, it was easy playing with them (Hakeem and Clyde Drexler)
because they attracted so much attention. Now it will be harder, but
it can be done."
Cassell seems convinced.
"We're not rebuilding. This gives a chance for me to get some
freedom," Cassell said. "I think Danny Manning is going to have a hell
of a year. Robert's going to have a hell of a year. I'm going to have
a hell of a year. Kevin will come back and have a hell of a good year.
That's four guys who are going to have a hell of a year."

Brown, Djordjevic, O'Neal all on injured list
PORTLAND, Ore. (Oct 30, 1996 - 21:12 EST) -- The Portland Trail
Blazers placed three players on their injured list Wednesday to cut
the roster to the 12-man limit before they open their regular NBA
season Friday against the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Marcus Brown was sitting out the start of Portland's 27th season with
a strained groin, Aleksander Djordjevic has a sprained right ankle and
Jermaine O'Neal is still recovering from a sprained left knee.
All three must sit out a minimum of five games.
nba.1212vpoznanovic,
Richmond says he's been focused from game 1
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Oct 30, 1996 - 05:42 EST) -- Kings all-star guard
Mitch Richmond has been with his team in body, but not in soul.
His teammates know it, his coaches know it and most of all, Richmond
is aware he has not been himself.
They all look for signs that he is regaining his focus after an
emotional contract squabble with Kings vice president Geoff Petrie
that left Richmond angry enough to say Petrie had lied to him.
They have not had a meaningful conversation since the Oct. 4 start of
training camp. Petrie has made overtures toward Richmond, but they
have been rebuffed.
"He hasn't been as aggressive as he normally is," Petrie said.
"Everybody certainly knows what he's capable of doing. Now that the
games count, that will be the real test."
Richmond hurried out of practice Tuesday saying he had an appointment
and did not have time to talk.
When told the topic of the story was his mental focus as the team
approached its regular-season opener Friday at Houston, he said, "I'll
be all right."
However, Richmond's preseason performance actually has been far from
all right. Although he has struggled at times offensively, it is his
lack of defense that has been most disappointing. Last season at this
time, he was the point man on an aggressive, challenging defense. This
season, he has been unenthusiastic and unemotional.
Kings coach Garry St. Jean has been connected with Richmond longer
than any person with the team and has wondered when, or if, his star
will get back to playing like himself.
"You're writing about something that we around the team have tried to
give space," St. Jean said, "because of the respect we have for Mitch
as individuals, a team and an organization. It certainly hasn't been
his best training camp and a lot of it is mental.
"But because of the respect I have for him as a player and a person, I
believe, unless somebody tells me different, that Friday when the bell
comes around, he's going to be there."
St. Jean said that belief goes against his normal philosophy as a
coach.
"I don't believe you can turn it on and off," he said. "That when you
want to get it going, you can just flip a switch, turn your game on
and expect it to be there. But there are players who can do that."
Richmond's teammates believe he is capable of doing that.
"I've seen flashes of him," center Duane Causwell said. "Especially in
the (second) Chicago game, I kind of saw the old Rock. The man's pride
is hurt and that's the way you have to look at it. Some people say you
can't turn it on and off, but when the season starts, he'll be there
for us."
Forward Michael Smith acknowledged that Richmond has not performed as
in the past.
"I've seen him play like his old self (occasionally), but he's still
with us," Smith said.
"He's still a guy we can depend on, on and off the court. Off the
court, he's still as funny a guy as you can find. On the court, he has
not been the Mitch that we know.
"He's still going through his own personal problems, but we've talked
about it and I've got faith in him. He won't let us down. Once the
season starts, he's going to do what he's always done. He won't carry
that onto the court.
"He'll leave it off the court because that's what a professional
does."
Smith said he understands why Richmond feels the way he does.
"He's the second-best shooting guard in the league. If you give more,
you deserve more."
Lionel Simmons says the competitor in Richmond will bring out his
best.
"Once the game starts and the first person goes at him, that's when
he'll step up and go right back at him."
Simmons says the prevailing feeling around the team that Richmond's
subpar performance has filtered down to his teammates does not work
with him.
Said Olden Polynice: "Mitch is going to be ready because he doesn't
want to get embarrassed and he's not a quitter. And that's the bottom
line."
Richmond, unlike Seattle's Shawn Kemp, who stayed away from the
Sonics' training camp for three weeks to "get his head right,"
reported to Kings camp on time. Kemp has performed well since
returning to the Sonics and perhaps Richmond may second-guess his own
decision.
nba.1213vpoznanovic,
Who will win it all in '97? The Sonics think they will
SEATTLE (Oct 30, 1996 - 10:54 EST) -- First, there's Gary Payton, the
NBA's Defensive Player of the Year last season who makes backcourt
thievery an art form.
Then there's Shawn Kemp, who outplayed Utah's Karl Malone in the
Western Conference Finals in May to establish himself as the best
power forward in pro basketball.
Former All-Stars and seasoned veterans Detlef Schrempf and Hersey
Hawkins are back to start again alongside Payton and Kemp.
Add in new starting center Jim McIlvaine, a 7-foot-1 shot blocker who
was Gheorghe Muresan's caddie in Washington last season, and 14-year
veteran Craig Ehlo to a bench that includes Sam Perkins and Nate
McMillan.
Buoyed by the confidence of winning Games 4 and 5 against the Chicago
Bulls in the NBA Finals last season, the Sonics think this is going to
be their season.
They expect to win the league championship by beating the reigning
champions and the reigning king of the NBA, Michael Jordan, after they
get past the new and improved Los Angeles Lakers and Shaquille O'Neal
in the West.
"This team believes in itself," said George Karl, who coached the
Sonics to a franchise-record 64 regular-season wins last season. "This
team has very little fear."
"This team potentially is a better team than last year's team,"
general manager Wally Walker said.
The Sonics believe they will be better this season because Payton, 28,
last season's NBA steals champion who was a key member of the gold
medal-winning Olympic team in Atlanta last summer, and the wonderfully
gifted Kemp, a four-time All-Star at 26, are going to be even better.
And both have been pretty good. A year ago, Payton and Kemp were
second-team all-NBA players with Payton sixth in the MVP voting and
Kemp eighth.
Payton and Kemp were at their best in a season when the Sonics put
first-round playoff exits against Denver in '94 and the Lakers in '95
behind them with their first trip to the NBA Finals since 1979. That
was the last time the franchise won it all, and the basketball names
in Seattle were Lenny Wilkens, Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson and Jack
Sikma.
Walker, a member of that '79 team, took over as club president three
years ago after owner Barry Ackerley fired Bob Whitsitt, now
Portland's GM.
Walker, 42, left his own money management business in San Francisco to
take the Sonics' job. He said he wouldn't have accepted if he didn't
think Ackerley had serious aspirations to win a championship.
During the summer, Ackerley lavished millions to keep Payton ($87.5
million) from leaving as a free agent and millions more to land
McIlvaine ($33 million) to replace Ervin Johnson and Frank Brickowski
in the Sonics' middle.
Ackerley also signed Hawkins, 30, a calming influence in the locker
room, to a new five-year, $15 million deal.
The Sonics know O'Neal and the Lakers will challenge them in the
Pacific Division as well as the West. They still think they're better
than the Lakers, though.
"We're always worried about the competition," Walker said. "That's why
we didn't feel the status quo as good enough for us."
Karl, whose Sonics teams have won an amazing 72 percent of their games
since he left Real Madrid in Spain to come here 4 1/2 years ago,
watched his team beat the O'Neal-led Lakers during the exhibition
season. Now, he wants to do it four more times during the regular
season.
"A lot of people are talking about LA," he said. "My only concern is
about ourselves. Do we keep the attitude and the chemistry that we had
last year? Or do we get too cocky or too complacent or too selfish or
too individualistic?"
It'll be Karl's job to keep Payton, now that he has a gigantic
contract, and Kemp, who was a no-show for the first 22 days of
training camp because he was unhappy over his own contract, motivated.
The old ABA player also got a new contract from Ackerley during the
summer. Karl is confident he will be successful.
"This team has a big-time heart and a big-time talent," he said. "I
think it will continue to improve."
nba.1214vpoznanovic,
McIlvaine starting to make his mark
SEATTLE (Oct 30, 1996 - 06:30 EST) -- If the first-half dunk over
Shaquille O'Neal helped ease whatever doubts there might have been,
the second-half block of an O'Neal shot might have erased them.
Certainly, it was a meaningless preseason game between the Sonics and
Lakers last Friday in Boise, but it was still Shaquille O'Neal, and
Jim McIlvaine -- the third-year center signed to a $35 million,
seven-year contact during the summer -- didn't back down, impressing
teammates and coaches alike.
"Mac is coming along," said guard Nate McMillan. "He understands what
we want out of him."
What head coach George Karl wants out of 7-foot-1-inch, 260-pound
McIlvaine when the regular season begins Friday night at Utah is 20
minutes a night of shot blocking and rebounding with the occasional
basket or two.
"If he does that for us, we will be very effective," Karl said.
That's almost exactly what the 24-year-old McIlvaine did during the
preseason, as he averaged 23.8 minutes a game, 2.5 blocks, 5.1
rebounds and 6.9 points, shooting 54 percent from the floor.
"The exciting thing is his having success playing over 20 minutes a
night and knowing that he will get better," Karl said.
Karl noticed that McIlvaine's teammates weren't averse to throwing him
the ball late in games. "They are starting to feel confident in him
shooting the ball," Karl said. "He's a big target in there and he
catches the ball well."
McIlvaine said he has felt comfortable with the team throughout the
preseason and that he hasn't felt pressure to produce.
"I have confidence in my game," McIlvaine said. "I think guys just
need to get around me for a while and see what I'm capable of doing. I
didn't come in and try and surprise anybody or do anything that I'm
not capable of. I just want to do the things I'm capable of doing."
McIlvaine's biggest adjustment so far has been finding his comfort
zone in Karl's myriad of defenses, which sometimes find McIlvaine
guarding a much smaller player out on the wing.
"There's a lot more situations where we go out and switch and
sometimes have mismatches," McIlvaine said. "Sometimes I'll find
myself on the perimeter contesting a 3-point shot or trying to stop a
guy from getting in the lane and shooting.
"It's something I've done before, but it wasn't a part of our regular
game plan (at Washington, where McIlvaine played the last two years)
and it's taking some getting used to."
MCMILLAN PLANS TO PLAY: Nate McMillan made it through his second
straight full practice Tuesday, and afterward Karl said the plan is
for McMillan to be able to play when the season opens Friday.
"It's the first time in a while I remember him going back-to-back,"
Karl said. Right now, McMillan's main problem is a groin pull he
suffered during the Sonics' preseason game in Seville, Spain, on Oct.
20, although he also still suffers from the sciatic-nerve problem that
hampered him during the NBA Finals last June.
McMillan said he plans on being on the active roster when the season
starts, but he noted "I won't be out there embarrassing myself. We
have guys who can step in and fill that void. I don't have to be out
there trying to play hero."
ROSTER MOVES DUE: The Sonics didn't make any roster moves Tuesday,
although they must pare their current 15-man roster down to 12 by
Thursday at 3 p.m. PST.
The Sonics can put up to three players on injured reserve, and Karl
hinted that might be the way the team goes.
Reserve center Steve Scheffler (foot) is a certainty to go on the IR,
but it no longer looks like McMillan will go on the IR, which means
the team would have to make two more moves.
Free agent forward Larry Stewart has played well enough to make the
team, but guard Sherell Ford and Greg Graham have guaranteed
contracts. Ford has two years left on a three-year deal that totals
roughly $1.5 million, while Graham has three years left on the
original six-year, $7.35 million deal he signed as a rookie in 1993.
The Sonics would owe the reminder of the contracts on Ford and Graham
if they cut either player. Worse, they wouldn't get any relief from
the salary cap by cutting Ford, the team's 1995 first round draft
choice, or Graham, acquired during the off-season for Vincent Askew.
The Sonics are at their salary cap limit now, and would like to free
up room in future seasons to give Shawn Kemp more money.
Karl said Walker has been working the phones the past few days,
implying that the team might be trying to trade either Ford or Graham.
Then there's center Elmore Spencer, signed by the Sonics over the
weekend. Spencer signed a "make-good" deal, meaning the team can cut
him any time until Nov. 15 with no further financial obligation. If
they keep Spencer after that, he will make the NBA minimum of
$247,500.
But Karl said Tuesday the 7-foot, 310-pound Spencer isn't ready to
play.
"I don't think he's close to being in good shape," Karl said. "The way
we play, it's imperative that our big men can run and play on the
floor and cover big guys."

Bullets release Petruska and Blunt
LANDOVER, Md. (Oct 30, 1996 - 21:12 EST) -- The Washington Bullets
have released center Richard Petruska and guard Bernard Blunt, general
manager Wes Unseld said Wednesday.
Petruska played in all eight preseason games this year, averaging 4
points per game. He was signed as a training camp invitee earlier this
month.
Blunt joined the Bullets squad as a free agent two weeks ago. He
averaged four points per game in two games.
The Bullets roster now stands at 15. The team's opening day roster
will be completed Thursday.

Knicks' Childs to begin season on injured list
New York Knicks point guard Chris Childs, who suffered a fractured
right leg in practice three weeks ago, will begin the season on the
injured list, according to team president Ernie Grunfeld.
"Chris is making very good progress in his recovery, which is moving
according to schedule," said Grunfeld in a statement. "The X-rays
showed his leg is healing nicely. He will begin riding a stationary
bicycle and running in water during practice. We will continue to
monitor his progress and he'll be re-examined within a week. He will
start the season on the injured list."
The non-displaced fracture to the right fibula occurred during an
October 8th practice when Childs ran into teammate Charlie Ward, who
will inherit the starting point guard duties. Veteran Scott Brooks has
been signed since and will be used as a reserve.
New York, which opens its season Friday in Toronto, has not officially
placed Childs on the injured list yet.
The 28-year-old Childs played the last two years with the New Jersey
Nets and replaced Kenny Anderson as the team's starting point guard
last year. Childs' deal reportedly was worth $24 million over six
years.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Childs was a find for the Nets last season and
played so well the team dealt Anderson to Charlotte to give him the
starting job. He averaged 12.8 points, seven assists and 3.1 rebounds
in 78 games, including 54 starts.
Childs attended Boise State and had his NBA career delayed due to
alcohol problems.

Marathon negotiating session planned for new Atlanta arena
ATLANTA (Oct 31, 1996 - 10:30 EST) -- A marathon negotiating session
is planned Friday on a new downtown basketball arena with
representatives of Turner Broadcasting System, Atlanta, Fulton County
and the city-county recreation authority.
Although Turner officials are hopeful a deal can be struck, they have
begun pursuing other options. They recently renewed talks with Cobb
County leaders about building the arena there instead.
"The crunch time is now," said William Shaw, Turner's lead negotiator.
"We are optimistic that in the next few days this thing is going to
work out, but we have options if it doesn't."
Turner executives have grown increasingly frustrated and impatient
with city and Fulton County officials. The executives want a new arena
finished by fall 1999 for the Atlanta Hawks and a possible National
Hockey League team.
Turner plans Friday to formally apply for an NHL expansion franchise.
The executives also are worried about risking the tax-exempt status of
some of the project's bond financing. Proposed federal legislation
could jeopardize that status, adding $1 million a year to the cost,
unless bonds are issued by early January.
"Instead of them doing the walkathon, I'd like to see them doing some
sprints," Shaw said of government officials.
Mayor Bill Campbell said through a spokesman Wednesday that he has
recently talked with Ted Turner and is confident a final deal can be
reached within several days.
The deal must still be approved by City Council, the Fulton County
Commission and the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority, a
process that could cause further delays.

Hornets trim roster to 12
CHARLOTTE (Oct 31, 1996 - 18:54 EST) -- The Charlotte Hornets trimmed
their active rosters to the opening night limit of 12 by waiving one
forward and placing two others on the injured list.
The Hornets waived Brad Lohaus, who averaged 2.7 points and seven
minutes a game in five exhibition games. He was obtained by the
Hornets along with Anthony Mason from the New York Knicks in exchange
for Larry Johnson in July.
Rafael Addison was placed on the injured list with a strained left
hamstring. He averaged 4.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1 assist and 12.7
minutes per game in six exhibition games.
Carlos Strong underwent surgery on Oct. 22 to remove a herniated disc
and scar tissue that were pressing on nerves in his back. He is out of
action indefinitely. Strong played in no exhibition games.

Can Bulls repeat without Haley?
(Oct 31, 1996 - 18:54 EST) - Some people tuning into the start of the
NBA season will wonder whether something is wrong with the set. Others
will wonder if rotisserie-league freaks staged a coup and replaced
commissioner David Stern.
The answer is neither. Between trades and rookie signings, more than
100 players wound up on new teams. They ranged from some of the
best-known names to the most obscure. All told, enough players moved
to make baseball look stable by comparison. This is what happens when
a league makes the kind of money the NBA did.
This is not necessarily progress. More player movement means less
loyalty all around and, so far, the increasing influx of younger
players has tended to mean more snots. About the best news is that for
all those player changes, only three are important enough to affect
the outcome of the coming season.
Posed in the form of questions, in descending order of importance,
they would be:
-- Now that he's through playing general manager, can Charles Barkley
still play well enough to win a title?
-- For a guy who couldn't handle Mickey Mouse-level distractions in
Orlando, can Shaq really hope to do better in Los Angeles?
-- Can Chicago win another title with Dennis Rodman but without Jack
Haley?
"I've never been his baby sitter or spokesman," said Haley, waived
Tuesday by Milwaukee and seeking employment as of this writing.
"To this day," he continued, "I have never talked to (Bulls coach)
Phil Jackson about Dennis Rodman in any capacity,"
Anybody who watched the Bulls run through the rest of the league en
route to a 72-10 season and the championship assumed Haley was in
Chicago for a purpose. He was always seated near Rodman on the bench
and, for all but one game, immaculately dressed in street clothes.
Haley now says he wasn't hired as a baby sitter. Or an aspiring model.
But that doesn't mean he didn't play a significant role in the Bulls'
success. An educated guess is that it was something similar to the
role he played in his first go-round in Chicago, before Rodman was
there.
That was as Michael Jordan's pigeon for card games and the like. The
truth is, people who gamble need someone they can beat if they gamble
often enough. Given Jordan's reputation for gambling often and poorly,
the presence of a cheerful pigeon should not be underestimated.
So will Haley's departure be enough to tip the balance of power?
Not to LA.
Shaq's shift from East Coast to West will make a much bigger stir in
the entertainment business than the basketball business. For starters,
another ad agency gets a crack at trying to convince us the only thing
Shaq cares about are championships.
Hope the new set of commercials contain plenty of actual footage of
the big fella practicing free throws. (How they'll get it is another
matter). But if championships were the only thing on Shaq's mind, he
would never have left behind the supporting cast in Orlando. The Magic
won 20 of the 28 games O'Neal missed last season against tougher
competition. And right now, no two Lakers equate to one Penny
Hardaway. That's why Los Angeles won't get out of the Western
Conference.
And why the Rockets will.
Unlike Shaq, Barkley's move to Houston will unite him with another
great player for the first time in his career. Two, in fact. Chuck
will be 34 by the time February rolls around and, while he can no
longer pull a team along by himself, this season he won't have to.
Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler will see to that.
Charles was so desperate to go to Houston after last season that he
played the roles of general manager, agent and discontented superstar
to get it done. The lesson Chicago proved last season is that it takes
two impact players to win consistently in the NBA, and at least three
to win a title. Even old ones.
"We got an old team," Barkley said. "That ain't no big deal to me."
It shouldn't be to anyone else, either.
For all the reshuffling everyone else did, Chicago's only significant
move -- other than letting Haley go -- was signing Robert Parish, the
oldest player in the league.
That means the Bulls actually got older. As to whether it also wrecked
the team chemistry -- with Rodman, an already fragile commodity --
remains to be seen. Phil Jackson wouldn't speculate.
"But I hate it," he said, "when guys I played against are on the
team."

Bulls merely want to be 'remarkable' again
DEERFIELD, Ill. (Oct 31, 1996 - 17:06 EST) -- It's time for the
encore.
Fresh off the best season in NBA history -- a 72-10 record followed by
a fourth championship in six years -- the Chicago Bulls expect only to
be special again.
"Whether it's 72 wins or not, they want to make it a remarkable year,"
coach Phil Jackson said. "They want to be entertaining and exacting.
They want people to remember this season."
The Bulls open Friday night at Boston with the same cast of characters
that ruled the NBA a year ago. And they say they still have the drive
to excel.
"If anything, we have more to prove now," Michael Jordan said. "We've
got to prove it wasn't a fluke last year. Everyone's going to look at
us with high expectations."
Indeed, has a team ever gone into a season with greater expectations?
Jordan simply expects to be the best basketball player on the planet.
Dennis Rodman expects a sixth consecutive rebounding crown. Scottie
Pippen expects to overcome an ankle injury and reclaim his unofficial
title of top all-around player.
Toni Kukoc expects to repeat as the NBA's best sixth man. Luc Longley,
Ron Harper, Steve Kerr and Bill Wennington expect to be solid role
players -- and to be rewarded with another championship.
"Last year was sort of anticipation and wonder. This year it's, 'Can
we live up to it? Can we redo it?' That's a different dynamic, but I
think we're up to the task," Longley said. "We're chomping at the bit.
We had so much fun last year. We can't wait to start winning again."
Can anything stop the Bulls?
"Boredom, inattentiveness, lack of urgency in play. Those are the
things we've had to guard against," Jackson said. "I think this team
is motivated. They want to do as well as last year. They don't know if
numbers are important to measure that by, but they want to be the team
that's on top."
Being the league's oldest team, health is a major issue. Three
starters -- Pippen, Longley and Harper -- are coming off surgery. A
fourth, Rodman, missed four preseason games with a sore hamstring.
"You have to be concerned about an old team being more susceptible to
injury," said owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who will spend almost $60 million
on players' salaries this season. "Then there's the motivation factor.
Michael was obviously obsessed with winning last year. We don't know
if Dennis or the other guys are going to have the same intensity."
The Bulls dealt very well with distractions last season, and there
will be more in 1996-97.
Both Jordan and Rodman have movies coming out. Rodman has a new show
on MTV. Jordan's new cologne is on the shelves. Pippen has become an
endorsement machine. Rodman is always an incident waiting to happen.
And then there's the fact that Jordan, Rodman and Jackson are signed
for this season only.
"No one knows if this is my last year or not," said Jordan, who'll
make a record $30 million. "As long as I've got the scissors, whenever
I want to cut it off ... by no means will I let someone else dictate
when it's time to walk away."
Jackson said he and his players don't worry about the future beyond
this season.
"We're just happy to be here. We're not looking at it as a last hurrah
type of thing," he said. "As for this year, there are expectations. We
deserve them. We have to live up to them."

Nuggets suspend McInnis, reduce roster to 12
DENVER (Oct 31, 1996 - 21:30 EST) -- The Denver Nuggets on Thursday
reduced their roster to the NBA-mandated 12 players, placing two
players on injured reserve and suspending rookie guard Jeff McInnis.
McInnis, the team's second-round draft choice from North Carolina, was
placed on the suspended list for conduct detrimental to the team.
Coach Bernie Bickerstaff did not elaborate. McInnis missed his fourth
straight day of practice on Thursday -- absences that Bickerstaff has
referred to as "excused."
Going on injured reserve were center Rich King, who has a torn
cartilage in his left knee, and guard Keith Jennings, who will undergo
surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The Nuggets open their 1996-97 season at home Friday night against the
Dallas Mavericks.

'The Fonz' is back for the Nuggets
(Oct 31, 1996 - 10:12 EST) -- If you close your eyes tightly, you can
envision LaPhonso Ellis in a black leather jacket and jeans, revving
his motorcycle, flashing a thumbs-up and saying, "Heeeeey."
Kick on the jukebox and start dancing. The Fonz is back.
After two long years of surgeries and rehabilitation, the Denver
Nuggets forward is looking a lot like the player he was before doctors
discovered cysts on both knees.
"I feel good, and I'm playing solid basketball right now. But I'm
hesitant to talk about being back. I think I just need to keep working
hard and stay the course," said Ellis, who will get his first official
test of the 1996-97 NBA season Friday night when the Nuggets open at
McNichols Arena against Dallas.
He has been impressive in the preseason, averaging a team-leading 17.5
points and seven rebounds in eight games. He converted .581 of his
field-goal attempts (50-for-86), .333 of his three-point attempts
(3-for-9) and .679 of his free-throw tries (36-for-53).
And he's back to running the floor in a way other NBA big men can only
dream about.
"I've been playing against Fonz ever since we were freshmen in
college," Nuggets captain Bryant Stith said. "His perimeter game is
back, he's running the court well; the only thing missing from his
game is that explosiveness he had his rookie season.
"He feared no one; he would dunk on anyone in his path. But that is
still coming.
"His strengths are his ability to run the floor, to fill the lanes on
the fast break and to hit the mid-range jump shot."
Ellis returned to the Nuggets on Jan. 6 last season, and coach Bernie
Bickerstaff soon was alternating Ellis and rookie Antonio McDyess at
power forward.
Bickerstaff knew the two ultimately would fight each other for minutes
and no one would benefit, especially the team.
So, as soon as the season ended, Bickerstaff talked with Ellis about a
position change.
The coach wanted to keep McDyess at power forward and move Ellis to
small forward.
"I knew that meant I'd have to work on my perimeter shooting," Ellis
said. "And that's what I did all last summer."
So far, so good.
But the plan was thrown into a nose dive when McDyess tore the
meniscus in his right knee Oct. 3, one day before training camp and
the injury required surgery that kept the second-year player sidelined
until this past Monday.
That meant Ellis spent the preseason working at power forward rather
than small forward. It also meant most of Ellis' point production came
from jump shots in transition rather than in the post, where most
power forwards score.
When McDyess returns full time, the plan is for the 6-foot-8,
240-pound Ellis to move back to small forward -- where one would
expect many of his points to come from the perimeter.
"The more I think about it," Ellis said, "once I play the (small
forward) spot, I'll probably be posting up a lot more because it's an
obvious mismatch, a (former) power forward posting up primarily
against a (small forward) player.
"It's interesting. But it's also nice, because it's challenging me to
be something I've always wanted to be -- a complete player who can
shoot the ball from the outside, who can post up, who can handle the
ball."
Bickerstaff has been cautious in discussions about Ellis.
The coach clearly likes what he has seen, but Ellis has appeared on
the verge of returning before, only to felled by injury.
"I can't say he's back," Bickerstaff said. "He's playing good, he's
running, he's doing all the things he did prior to (the surgeries),
and we're real happy with that. But the answer has to come from Fonz
in how he feels."
Depending on McDyess' recovery, the Nuggets could stick with their
preseason lineup for Friday's opener. That would mean Fonz would start
at power forward and Dale Ellis at small forward.
No matter where Fonz plays, Dale Ellis expects good things from the
former Notre Dame standout.
"If you look at how he's playing, even though he's at the (power
forward position), he's playing a small forward game: catching and
shooting; in the transition game he's hitting his jump shot. He has
the size and the quickness. I don't think changing back to small
forward (once McDyess returns) will affect him.
"Physically, he looks good, he's strong, his attitude is great ... and
he wants to win very, very bad."

Seikaly placed on suspended list, Warriors reduce roster
OAKLAND, Calif. (Oct 31, 1996 - 22:12 EST) -- Center Rony Seikaly was
placed on the suspended list as the Golden State Warriors cut their
roster to 12 players Thursday.
Seikaly, a holdout for training camp and the preseason, continued to
be the source of trade rumors, although Warriors general manager Dave
Twardzik denied a deal was imminent.
To reduce their active roster to 12 active players, the Warriors
placed guard Anthony Harris, forward Marcus Mann and center Mike
Peplowski on the injured list.
Harris a rookie out of Hawaii, has a hairline fracture to his right
ankle. In two preseason games with the Warriors, he had six points and
a blocked shot in 15 minutes.
Mann, the team's second-round pick in this year's draft, has a low
back strain. He averaged 2.7 points, two rebounds and 12 minutes in
five games this preseason.
Both Mann and Harris will miss a minimum of five games.
Peplowski, a four-year NBA veteran, tore the anterior cruciate
ligament and the medial meniscus in his left knee during the Warriors'
preseason game against the Denver Nuggets Oct. 18. He will miss the
entire season.

Houston places Price, Jones on injured list
HOUSTON (Oct 31, 1996 - 20:01 EST) -- The Houston Rockets placed point
guard Brent Price and center Charles Jones on the injured list
Thursday.
Price is expected to be out about three months after breaking a bone
near his left elbow. He averaged 6.3 points in three preseason games.
Jones, a 13-year veteran, has a strained lower back. He recently
signed for a third season with the Rockets and played in six preseason
games, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking four shots.
The Rockets open the regular season at home against the Sacramento
Kings on Friday night.

Shaq makes crown possible
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Oct 31, 1996 - 02:01 EST) -- Championships do not
just happen.
Wilt Chamberlain joined the Lakers in 1968. What an impressive
foundation they had with Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.
Still, it was four seasons for everything to come together with a
championship season.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joined the Lakers in 1976. Once again, it took
four seasons to win the NBA championship.
This is why this summer, when Shaquille O'Neal jumped from Orlando to
the Lakers, it was necessary to offer a word of caution -- in all
probability it would take three or four years for the Lakers to win
the championship.
That was before watching O'Neal play.
SEEING, BELIEVING
Once you see the big guy up close it is clear a championship could
happen in this, his first season with the Lakers.
This is not to say O'Neal's game was underrated. That's not possible.
He's won the NBA scoring championship. Along with David Robinson and
Hakeem Olajuwon, he's been an NBA All-Star center during the last
three seasons. The gentleman Shaq pushed into the background when he
elbowed his way onto the All-Star team was Patrick Ewing, who is not
exactly chopped liver.
And yet the scope of O'Neal's game is not completely appreciated.
To many, he is this giant of a young man at 7-foot-1 and 300 pounds
who dominates with brute strength. Al McGuire used to talk about big
men as aircraft carriers. O'Neal is the entire fleet.
But there's more to his game than bulk.
O'Neal brings skills to the court. He can catch and pass the
basketball. That's not as easy as it sounds. When the ball goes to
many centers it is as if they have glue on their hands. They check out
everyone on the court, sometimes two or three times, before passing.
With Shaq, it's bang-bang, the ball is tossed to him and it's in
someone else's hands.
DEFENSIVE IMPACT
This enables the offense to be fluid. It increases the ability of his
teammates to score.
When you see a player only once or twice a year, plus any number of
times on television, you miss little things. With O'Neal, you do not
see his quick feet, the way he spins to the basket. You do not see his
enthusiasm. As big as he is, you overlook his impact on defense.
Not all of this was missed. Some of it is new. Each year he expands
his game. This may be the best thing about Shaq. He's 24. He's a
four-year NBA veteran. As good as he is already, the upside remains
huge. His best years are ahead of him.
Del Harris, the Lakers' coach, found O'Neal receptive. Harris
responded by asking Shaq to assert himself more on defense and, as
impressive as his rebounding numbers have been, to pound the boards
even harder this season.
Speaking of O'Neal's age, that's another reason why declaring that the
Lakers will be in the hunt for the championship may be called a
stretch.
Not just O'Neal's age. Look at the starting lineup. Elden Campbell at
28 and Cedric Ceballos at 27 are the gnarled vets. Eddie Jones is 25.
Nick Van Exel is 24. They're backed up by Rumeal Robinson, 29, Sean
Rooks, 27, and Kobe Bryant, who is all of 18.
The late George Allen, coach of the Washington Redskins' famed
Over-the-Hill Gang, a group of football senior citizens who made it to
the Super Bowl, would shake his head and say these guys belong in the
first grade, not in the NBA Finals.
In June, we'll be saying youthful enthusiasm and talent more than
outweighed the fact there are no thirty-something players in the
starting lineup.
Make that enthusiasm, talent and mix.
The current hot word is chemistry. The Lakers have it. They have nice
balance. Granted, there will be some rough spots. The Sonics, Rockets,
Spurs, Jazz and Bulls are not going to roll over for them.
Just remember the Lakers have more than seven months to smooth things
out.
O'Neal brings his power game. Van Exel will get him the ball. Ceballos
is a slasher who will find his medium-range game improved because
O'Neal generates so much attention. Jones is another slasher. Van Exel
can pop from outside.
Then there's Campbell. Slowly, methodically, patiently, he's become a
valuable player. He's an excellent shot-blocker, a strong power
forward who isn't worried about his points. He loves setting picks.
His unselfish attitude is a critical ingredient for a championship
team.
The defense should be satisfactory. Jones has quick hands and great
instincts, which is why he steals so many passes. He and Van Exel can
play perimeter defense. Campbell and O'Neal can erase a lot of
mistakes by blocking shots.
Rooks and Robinson are role players. They know this and are eager to
be part of the mix. Bryant will run and gun, sort of a shadow Jones.
No, he doesn't have a clue on defense. That will come.
They'll all fit well with O'Neal.
So will Byron Scott, one of the major players from the old Lakers'
Showtime era. He returns at 35 as a spot player. Talk about popping
the outside jump shot. Scott has no conscience. Give him the ball and
he'll drill a shot without blinking.
Scott's a security blanket. He'll understand when the Lakers go with
Bryant. The kid needs playing time to learn the NBA game. The veteran
will be ready mentally when needed. In the playoffs, when Bryant's
minutes can be expected to drop, Scott will be rested and ready for
expanded minutes, just as Danny Ainge was late in his career for
Phoenix.
If all the pieces fit, and it looks as if they will, a championship
can happen for the Lakers this season.
