GOLDEN GOAL TO BE SCRAPPED?
FIFA are considering scrapping the
Golden Goal rule after it flopped badly
during the European Championship.
Technical director Walter Gagg has
condemned the ruling for encouraging
defensive play.
Gagg said: "We have found something
which is good for women's and amateur
football is not necessarily good for
professional players."
Though Germany won the final with a
Golden Goal, that was the first success
in five games involving extra-time.

FIFA: GOLDEN RULE SET TO STAY
Confusion over the future of the golden
goal grew as FIFA said it had no plans
to scrap the controversial method of
deciding internationals.
It had been reported that FIFA's
technical director Walter Gagg was
against continuing the concept because
it encouraged defensive play.
But FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper said
Gagg had been misquoted and the golden
goal would operate in the '98 World Cup

CHAMPION EXPANSION PUT ON ICE
The expansion of the European
Champions' League to 24 will be delayed
for at least three years if room for
extra fixtures is not found, say UEFA.
UEFA plans to expand the Champions'
League in the 1997-98 season. Teams
would play in four groups of six rather
than the current four groups of four.
But with schedules already packed with
domestic fixtures and World Cup
qualifiers there will be congestion.

MLS Game Summary - Columbus at Tampa Bay
Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, Columbus 1
Tampa - Roy Lassiter had two second-half goals and assisted
on a third as the Tampa Bay Mutiny snapped a three-game losing
skid by trouncing the Columbus Crew 4-1. An Independence Day
crowd of 18,761 turned out for the Major League Soccer game at
Tampa Stadium.
Lassiter, who dominates the Mutiny offense with 11 goals and
3 assists, helped break a 1-1 halftime tie by setting up Steve
Ralston's game-winning goal in the 56th minute. He went on to
score two goals in a five-minute span, off assists from Ivan
McKinley in the 73rd minute and Giuseppe Galderisi in the 78th.
Galderisi put the Mutiny on the board with a 15th-minute
tally, assisted by Steve Pittman.
Peter Marino equalized for Columbus in the 18th minute, with
his ninth goal of the year.
Tampa remains atop the MLS Eastern Conference standings with
nine wins and six losses. The Crew has lost two in a row, and
drops to 5-11.

MLS Game Summary - Washington D.C. at Dallas
Final Score: Dallas 2, Washington D.C. 1 (Dallas wins in SO, 3-1)
Dallas - Richard Farrer's shootout goal gave the Dallas Burn
a 2-1 victory over DC United in front of 16,177 at the Cotton
Bowl Thursday night.
The Burn carried a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a showy
Jason Kreis goal in the 33rd minute. Kreis took a short feed from
Hugo Sanchez and, while falling to his left, blasted a 22-yard
shot past goalie Mark Simpson and into the lower left side of the
net.
Raul Diaz Arce equalized for DC United in the 61st minute,
assisted by Jeff Agoos.
United appeared to have iced the game with five minutes left
in regulation, only to have a John Harkes goal called back for a
questionable offside violation.
Dallas goalie Mark Dodd carried his strong game performance
into the shootout, saving attempts by Erik Imler and Kris
Kelderman. Jeff Agoos scored United's lone tiebreaker goal.
In addition to Farrer, Chad Ashton and Hugo Sanchez scored
in the shootout for Dallas.
The win raised the Burn's record to 10-7 overall, and 4-0 in
the shootout, and left them tied with the San Jose Clash for
second place in the MLS West.
DC United drops to 6-10.

Colorado Rapids squeak by the NY/NJ MetroStars 2-1 before 20,117
at Mile High Stadium Thursday night.
Scott Cannon started the decisive play in the 83rd minute
with a crossing pass from the left side. Shaun Bartlett picked up
the cross near the endline and played it back to Trittschuh for
the goal. It was the first goal allowed by MetroStars goalie Tony
Meola since June 19.
The Rapids' only other goal of the game came in the 68th
minute when MetroStars defender Nicola Caricola knocked in an own
goal while trying to clear a Jean Harbor shot.
Tab Ramos gave the MetroStars a short-lived 1-0 lead in the
56th minute, breaking through the Colorado defense and winning a
one-on-one faceoff with
NY/NJ was playing without team scoring leader Giovanni
Savarese, away on duty with the Venezuelan national team, and
Italian star Roberto Donadoni, who returned to the NY/NJ lineup

MLS Game Summary - New England at Los Angeles
Final Score: New England 1, Los Angeles 0
Pasadena - John Kerr Jr. scored what proved to be the lone
goal of the game as the New England Revolution recorded a
stunning 1-0 upset of the Western Division leading Los Angeles
Galaxy Thursday evening before 62,703 at the Rose Bowl.
Kerr's goal in the 24th minute of play came off a perfect
cross from Darren Swatzky. Kerr redirected the cross off Galaxy
defender Dan Calichman and into the net, snapping a three-game
Revolution skid.
Even more frustrating for the Galaxy is the fact that they
were unable to capitalize on the man advantage after New England
defender Alexi Lalas was sent off for drop-kicking the ball into
the stands with 11 1/2 minutes to play.
The Galaxy had the better of the opportunities, outshooting
the Galaxy, 18-13 and on goal, 6-5. But Revolution goalkeeper
Jim St. Andre stood tall to register his first MLS shutout.
Ironically, it was the first shutout turned in against the Galaxy
this season, leaving the Revolution the lone MLS team not to have
been blanked this year.
The Galaxy, which had their 12-game unbeaten string ended
last weekend by Colorado, sorely missed their leading scorer
Eduardo Hurtado, who is away in Chile training with Ecuador's
national squad for a World Cup qualifying match Saturday.
However, the Revolution was without key defender Mike Burns,
who suffered a knee injury in last Sunday's loss against
Washington D.C.

UEFA URGES FIFA TO REVIEW WORLD CUP TV DEAL
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
GENEVA -- UEFA added its voice on Sunday to those opposed to the
television deal negotiated by FIFA for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
UEFA's executive committee said it believed FIFA acted hastily when it
sold the TV rights for $2.2 billion to German media mogul Leo Kirch
and Swiss-based marketing company ISL and did not receive sufficient
guarantees.
In a press release issued Sunday, the executive committee urged FIFA
to review its position to safeguard the long term economic interests
of the member associations.
"UEFA has always said that a deal shouldn't be made too quickly, the
evolution of markets says that is clearly not a good thing,'' said
UEFA secretary general Gerhard Aigner. "I don't think it's the value
of the contract that is the question. We got what we had approximately
figured, maybe even more.
"I think simply the intent to align football for 10 years has created
a feeling of discontent within UEFA.''
UEFA is concerned that FIFA made its decision without taking more time
to find out what the market might dictate in 2006, particularly if
Germany wins the right to stage the event.
"In 2006 if we're earning triple, we don't want to give it to the
agent,'' said Aigner.
UEFA also claims it was misled about when the decision to sell the
rights would be made.
"The eight UEFA members on the FIFA executive board expected only to
discuss the offers last Wednesday, not that there would be a

FIFA's deal last week also upset public broadcasters such as the
European Broadcasting Union, which said the conditions under which the
contract was awarded were "completely biased.''
Concern has been expressed that the World Cups of 2002 and 2006 might
be on a pay-per-view basis, but FIFA stressed on Friday the public
would be able to watch "without paying specifically for the
privilege.''

WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: COLOMBIA TOPS URUGUAY
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
BARRANQUILLA, Colombia -- First-half goals by striker Faustino
Asprilla and veteran Carlos Valderrama helped Colombia to a 3-1 win
over Uruguay on Sunday.
The victory put Colombia on top of the South American World Cup
qualifying group.
Antony de Avila sealed Colombia's win with a 77th-minute goal after
Gabriel Cedres had pulled Uruguay back into the game with a goal early
in the second half. Ruben Pereyra of Uruguay and Leonel Alvarez of
Colombia were sent off near the end.
The result was a crushing blow for two-time world champion Uruguay,
which seems to be in a state of perpetual decline. Uruguay failed to
qualify for the 1994 World Cup, losing out to Bolivia, and Sunday's
loss followed a shocking 2-0 defeat at home to Paraguay last month.
They are now seventh in the nine-team group, with only the top four
qualifying for the 1998 World Cup finals in France.
Unbeaten Colombia, however, is in a healthy position at the top of the
table, despite relying heavily on the team which performed
disastrously at the 1994 World Cup.
Asprilla put Colombia ahead in the 10th minute, eluding a defender and
goalkeeper Claudio Arbiza after being set up by Victor Aristizal.
Asprilla then set up the second 13 minutes later which was converted
by a Valderrama header.
Colombia let up and Cedres beat their defense to score for Uruguay
from a free kick in the 55th minute.
Colombia's veterans were sagging but Antony de Avila, another stalwart
who came on as a substitute, settled the match with a shot from
outside the penalty area.
Bolivia 6, Venezuela 1
LA PAZ -- Bolivia celebrated FIFA's decision to allow it to play World
Cup qualifying matches at altitude in La Paz by thrashing Venezuela
6-1 in the team's first home game since getting the go-ahead.
Although FIFA stipulated that clubs must release players 10 days in
advance for national teams playing in La Paz, which lies 3,600 metres
above sea level, Venezuela chose to fly in three hours before the
start -- considered the second-best option.
Six different players scored for Bolivia as they threatened a repeat
of their 1994 qualifying campaign when a 100 percent home record in La
Paz, including a win over Brazil, helped them reach the finals for the
first time since 1950.
South American minnows Venezuela, who came within a minute of only
their third-ever World Cup qualifying win before drawing 1-1 with
Chile last month, were under pressure from the start, falling behind
to a second-minute goal by Marco Sandy.
The second was courtesy of a penalty converted by playmaker Marco
Etcheverry four minutes before halftime as Bolivia hauled themselves
back into contention for a place in the finals after April's 3-1
defeat to Argentina.
Weary Venezuela capitulated after halftime with Julio Baldivieso,
Milton Coimbra, Berthy Suarez and Roly Paniagua all getting on the
scoresheet.
Venezuela's consolations were a 65th-minute penalty by Edson Tortolero
and the knowledge they had done better than on their previous visit to
La Paz, when they lost 7-0.
Argentina 0, Peru 0
LIMA, Peru -- Desperate defending earned Argentina a scoreless draw
against an unlucky Peru on Sunday in a soccer World Cup qualifying
match after striker Abel Balbo was sent off in the 30th minute.
A hard-working Peruvian team, urged on by a capacity 45,000-strong
crowd in Lima's National Stadium, constantly pressed Argentina but
could not convert its numerous chances into the single goal that would
have decided the match.
Argentina, who played without top-scorer Gabriel Batistuta, were
resigned to defend from the moment Balbo's vengeful lunge at Jose
Carranza saw his early exit.
And with sole remaining forward Claudio Cannigia ineffective, the
South American giants only achieved one shot at goal all game.
"This result is really unjust," said Peru coach Juan Carlos Oblitas.
"Only one team tried to play."
Cannigia -- himself cautioned for elbowing -- blamed his team's
lackluster display on the Balbo sending off.
"Once we had a player thrown out, it was always going to be
difficult," he said.
Against a 10-man side, Peru found space down both flanks to create
good opportunities but a lack of precision in front of goal meant they
wasted a slew of chances.
They came closest to scoring in the 66th minute when Roberto Palacios
-- put through by a flicked header from Flavio Maestri -- flashed a
low drive against the post.
Maestri caused persistent problems for an experienced Argentine
defense and it was his diving header that brought the best out of
goalkeeper German Burgos with a reflex save in the 60th minute.
And when, in the last minute, after a goal-mouth scramble captain Juan
Reynoso struck a shot against Burgos, it seemed Peru was destined to
fulfil its familiar role as also-rans in the World Cup qualifying
campaign.
But while the Peruvians now have two points from three matches,
Argentina is also struggling after winning only once against Bolivia.
Chile 4, Ecuador 1
SANTIAGO, Chile -- Striker Ivan Zamorano scored two goals Saturday as
Chile handed Ecuador its first loss in three World Cup qualifying
matches.
Zamorano, who recently signed with Inter Milan in Italy's Serie A,
gave Chile (1-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. After Ecuador
(2-1-0) tied it on Alex Aguinaga's goal in the 74th minute, Marcelo
Salas scored what proved to be the winner two minutes later. Chile
received insurance goals by Fabian Estay and Zamorano in the final six
minutes.
The top four teams in the nine-team South American qualifying group
advance to the 1998 World Cup in France. Brazil automatically
qualifies as the defending champion.

TEMPERS FLARE AFTER SPRINKLERS INTERRUPT PLAY IN BRAZIL

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Tempers flared in a Brazilian soccer match
after an automatic sprinkling system went off during the game and gave

The drenching was followed by a brawl in which one player kicked a
referee and was then himself punched in the face by a linesman, while
armed police attempted to separate the combatants.
Goias had just converted a controversial penalty that gave them a 2-1
win over Anapolis in a regional championship game when powerful water
jets shot up from sprinklers buried in the turf.
News reports claimed ground staff had forgotten to turn off a computer
which activates them at the same time each night.
Anapolis midfielder Marco Antonio Boiadeiro took advantage of the
confusion to kick referee Antonio Pereira da Silva.
In the ensuing melee a linesman landed a powerful punch in Boiadeiro's

IRELAND APPROVES ANTI-HOOLIGAN ACCORD WITH BRITAIN

DUBLIN, Ireland -- The Irish government approved a bilateral agreement
with Britain on Monday aimed at preventing convicted soccer hooligans
traveling abroad.
Under the agreement, hooligans bound by a police restriction order
granted by an English or Welsh court will be ordered to report to a
police station in Britain during key international matches abroad.
The agreement, which comes into effect Aug. 1, follows serious riots
at a friendly match between England and Ireland at Dublin's Lansdowne
Road ground in February 1995.
The match had to be abandoned after England fans hurled missiles at
Irish fans and fought with police.
"United Kingdom fans convicted in Ireland of football hooligan
offenses under the Public Order Act of 1994 may, by an order of the
Courts in the United Kingdom, be stopped from traveling again to this
country or other countries for future fixtures for a further two
years," Irish Minister for Justice Nora Owen said Monday.
"These arrangements are an essential step in restricting the movements
of convicted football hooligans and contribute greatly to positive
cooperation between countries in dealing with violence at sporting
events."

FIFA DENIES PLANS TO SCRAP SUDDEN-DEATH FINISHES
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
ZURICH, Switzerland -- World soccer's governing body FIFA denied
reports Monday that it had plans to scrap the use of the sudden-death
finish in extra time.
"It's completely absurd,'' said FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper. "There
are no plans to scrap it and there never were. In fact, we don't even
have any plans to discuss such a thing. It's not on any of our
agendas.''
The reports stem from an interview given by FIFA technical director
Walter Gagg to a German magazine.
In the interview, Gagg said there might be a difference in the way a
youth or women's side, as opposed to a men's team, approached the
so-called "golden goal,'' adopting either an attacking or a defensive
strategy.
"From that they stuck a headline on the story saying FIFA scraps the
golden goal,'' Cooper said. "It was a complete and total
misunderstanding. Although they quoted him reasonably well, their
deductions were completely wrong.''
After several experiments, FIFA decided to extend the idea of
sudden-death finishes -- in which the first goal in extra time, the
"golden goal,'' decides the match -- to all competitions.
It was used for the first time in a major international tournament at
last month's European championship finals in England where it
attracted widespread criticism.
Of the seven matches in the knockout stage, five went into extra time
and only one -- the final between Germany and the Czech Republic --
was decided on sudden-death, the rest all going to penalty shootouts.
Designed to encourage teams to attack, the golden goal seemed to have
the opposite effect as most sides appeared more anxious to defend
during the 30 minutes of extra time and then take their chances in a
penalty shootout.
Sudden-death finishes will be used at the Olympic soccer tournament in
Atlanta later this month and at the 1998 World Cup finals in France.

ANP said Spanish giants Barcelona had matched the asking prices and

The 19-year-old striker has said he would like to play in Spain,

E sad.. to bi trebalo da bude neki Predrag Radosavljević
(or what?) kome je ono "Preki" nadimak.

Ispravka, Zemunci su me u današnjem Žurnalu demantovali.

Verovatno '94. i '95. Kad je Pat Nevin upao u krizu i otišao iz
Evertona, Radosavljević je uskočio i dostojno ga zamenio.
Baš me zanima kakva je situacija oko njegovog reprezentativnog
statusa, tj. da li bi kao prvi strelac američke profi lige bio
makar u konkurenciji sa The Wojom Bydimirovichem..
Riciteli u Bajernu, Nedved u Laciu, Žordi najverovatnije u Realu,
Fernando Kouto u Totenhemu, Bejbl kod Antića, Amunike u Barseloni,
Cartas i Marinakis u Sevilji, Jarni dobio poziv Štutgarta,
a ja očekujem poziv VJ. ;)
Što se tiče našeg fudbala, nema mnogo iznenađujućih vesti osim
svakodnevnih pojava po nižerazrednim ligama - klubovi se, zbog
velikih finansijskih problema, fuzionišu. Vinča i Mladost Umčari,
Vrčin 91 i PKB Padinjak. Možda će biti sličnog fuzionisanja i u
saveznom rangu, jer arbajteri sve više pričaju o lovi i dometima
a sve manje misle na tradiciju.

ITALIAN STRIKER RIZZITELLI JOINS BAYERN MUNICH
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
MUNICH, Germany -- UEFA Cup champions Bayern Munich signed Italian
international striker Ruggiero Rizzitelli from Torino on Wednesday,
the club said.
Rizzitelli, 28, signed a two-year contract and Bayern paid the
relegated Italian club four million marks ($2.6 million).
"He is the ideal complement to Juergen Klinsmann," Bayern's Italian
coach Giovanni Trapattoni said. Klinsmann captained Germany to the
European championship title last month.
Rizzitelli has played nine times for Italy but was dropped before the
European championship finals in England in which Italy were eliminated
in the opening group stage.

PORTO SIGNS PORTUGUESE NATIONAL COACH
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
LISBON, Portugal -- Portuguese champion Porto appointed national squad
coach Antonio Oliveira on Thursday to replace England's Bobby Robson
as club manager.
Porto chairman Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa told journalists that
Oliveira would sign a two-year contract on Saturday.
Oliveira coached the national squad at the European Championships in
England in June where the Portuguese delighted spectators with their
skills, but lost to eventual finalists from the Czech Republic in the
quarterfinals.
Oliveira, 43, had long been seen as first choice to replace Robson,
who left for Barcelona in May after leading Porto to two successive
championships.
It was not immediately known who would succeed Oliveira in charge of
the national side.
Before taking over the national squad in 1994, Oliveira had trained
six Portuguese sides, including Lisbon's Sporting, but without winning
any trophies.
Pinto da Costa also announced the club had signed Uruguayan
international defender Alejandro Diaz for four seasons.

RUSSIAN COACH RESIGNS AFTER A DISAPPOINTING EURO 96
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
MOSCOW -- Oleg Romantsev quit as Russia's coach on Thursday, taking
the blame for his team's poor performance at last month's European
championship in England.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) accepted Romantsev's resignation and
appointed his deputy Boris Ignatyev as new coach.
"Romantsev regretted he had not succeeded in carrying out the tasks
facing him,'' RFU president Vyacheslav Koloskov said. "He took the
main blame for the failure on himself.''
Russia, fancied outsiders for Euro 96, went out at the first-round
stage after finishing bottom of the so-called "group of death.''
The Russians lost 3-0 to Germany and 2-1 to Italy before managing a
3-3 draw against eventual finalists from the Czech Republic.
Koloskov thanked Romantsev for his work and blamed players for
stirring up trouble within the Russian camp. "His main mistake was
that he took players who created an unhealthy commotion in the team,''
Koloskov said.
Ignatyev said he would try to sort out what he described as "the human
factor'' before the start of the qualifying campaign for the 1998
World Cup.
"There is a group of players that cannot go along with us,'' he said,
without naming the players.
Ignatyev, 55, has worked with Russia's junior and youth teams and was
assistant coach at two World Cups and two European championships.

WALES HOPES TO JOIN ENGLAND'S BID FOR 2006 WORLD CUP
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
CARDIFF, Wales -- Welsh soccer administrators said on Thursday that
they were hoping to talk to their English counterparts about the
possibility of playing a role in the bid for the 2006 World Cup.
"Wales could never hope to stage a World Cup on our own -- we just
haven't got the grounds. But we would love to be involved in one and
I'm sure the Scots would too,'' said Brian Fear, president of the
Football Association of Wales.
"I am sure my council will be getting in touch with the F.A. (Football
Association) at some stage to discuss it.
"With Japan and Korea staging the 2002 World Cup jointly it has set a
precedent, and I would have thought it would be a great idea to get
the whole of the United Kingdom involved,'' Fear added.
The English, who hosted the World Cup in 1966, launched their bid
after the highly successful Euro 96 competition in June and received
immediate government support.
However, the government's Heritage Department also has granted $71.48
million (46 million pounds) toward the modernization of the National
Stadium in Cardiff and might be keen to spread some of the potential
benefits from a World Cup.
There is also the possibly that Scotland and Northern Ireland could
come into the picture.
A Heritage Department spokesman said: "We wouldn't want to pre-empt
the F.A. on how they formulate their bid, but we would acknowledge
that there are top-quality facilities in all parts of the UK and
believe it would be possible to put together a four-country bid.''

THE HISTORY OF THE BRAZILIAN CUP
--------------------------------
(short overview)
Note: Initially the tournament was called "Taca do Brasil", and then it
became "Copa do Brasil". But there is a problem here, "taca" and "copa" these
2 words in English mean "cup", and in Portuguese they also mean the same thing.
So, Brazilians can mess up even the name of the damn tournaments.
THE CUP OF BRAZIL
-----------------
Organized between 1959 & 1968, all state champions would play for the title
in eliminatory rounds til there were only 2 clubs left. These would them, of
course, play in the final. The winner would go on to play in the Libertadores
da America, which at the time only took one club from each country.
Here are the champs and runner ups (notice that the guy who prepared this was
a Palmeiras fan, so Palmeiras is written in caps everywhere it shows).

THE BRAZILIAN CUP

Twenty one years later the Cup of Brazil returned with a different name.
All the state champs, plus the runner-ups of the "most representative states"
(HOW ABOUT THAT MARTIN, CAN UEFA BEAT THAT ONE ????),
adding to a total of 32 clubs playing elimination rounds in the home-and-away
method. The champ goes on to the Libertadores da America, and the runner-up
goes on to play in the Commebol (I don't know what this is, but it must be
some new South American Tournament).
Here are the champs and runner-ups (notice that the Palmeiras fan already
knows the result for 1997).

STOICHKOV RETURNING TO BARCELONA
Reuters
_________________________________________________________________
MADRID -- Bulgarian international striker Hristo Stoichkov is to
return to his former club Barcelona after an unhappy season at Italian
club Parma.
Barcelona vice-chairman Joan Gaspart said Barcelona, who appointed
former England manager Bobby Robson as coach at the end of last
season, had bought Stoichkov back for less than half the amount Parma
paid a year ago.
"We realize that he had other important offers but he wanted to come
home," Gaspart added.
Stoichkov frequently clashed with former Barcelona coach Johann Cruyff
during his previous stint at the club.
Italian newspapers said the deal had been struck on Friday night.
No terms or details were disclosed but Parma were expected to receive
five billion lire ($3.3 million) for the mercurial Bulgarian, far from
the reported $15 million the club paid for him in July 1995.
A former European footballer of the year, Stoichkov failed to live up
to expectations at Parma after five fine seasons at Barcelona where he
won the European Cup in 1992.

ALL-STAR DOUBLEHEADER SET FOR SUNDAY
_________________________________________________________________
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Major League Soccer will stage its inaugural
All-Star Game Sunday at Giants Stadium as a part of a doubleheader
that will include a FIFA-sanctioned exhibition match featuring the
Brazilian national team against a world all-star team.
The All-Star game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., with World Cup champion
Brazil the FIFA World Stars scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT.
The MLS All-Star contest will pit a team from the league's Western
Conference against a set of stars from the Eastern Conference.
A pair of players are scheduled to participate in both games, as
midfielder John Harkes of the D.C. United will represent the MLS
Eastern Stars and goalkeeper Jorge Campos will be part of the MLS
Western Stars. The players will become teammates as part of the FIFA
World Stars squad.
The Tampa Bay Mutiny has a strong presence on the Eastern squad, with
coach Thomas Rongen adding Mutiny stars, midfielder Carlos Valderrama
of Colombia, forward Roy Lassiter, goalkeeper Mark Dougherty and
defenders Mark Pittman and Martin Vasquez.
The D.C. United also placed five players on the team, including
forward and league-leading goal scorer Raul Diaz Arce, midfielders
Marco Etcheverry and Harkes, defenseman Jeff Agoos and forward Steve
Rammel.
The Los Angeles Galaxy, the league's dominant team, dominate the
Western squad, as coach Lothar Osainder is joined on the squad by six
of his players. The Mexican Campos, the goalkeeper and one of the
league's marquee attractions, heads the list which includes forwards
Cobi Jones and Eduardo Hurtado, midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos,
defenders Dan Calichman and Robin Fraser.
The Dallas Burn placed five players on the team -- midfielders Jason
Kreis, Leonel Alvarez, Mark Santel, defender Diego Sonora and
goalkeeper Mark Dodd, while U.S. national team defender Marcelo Balboa
will be the lone representative from the Colorado Rapids.
The Brazilian national team, coached by Mario Jorge Zagalo, comes to
New Jersey without World Cup Golden Ball winner Romario or the
talented Rai, son of Brazilian legend Socrates. Still the club brings
a boatload of talent, highlighted by the 1994 World Cup trio of
defenders Ronaldo and Aldair and superstar forward Bebeto.
The majority of the team is composed of Brazil's Olympic squad,
including slick 19-year old midfielder Juninho, who is currently
plying his skills with Middlesborough in England's First Division.
Defender Roberto Carlos, who plays with Italian powerhouse Inter
Milan, youth team championship goalkeeper Dida and forward Ronaldinho
of the Dutch League's PSV Eindhoven should play major roles.
The World Stars are a veritable who's who of world soccer stars.
Liberian forward George Weah, currently of the Italian League's AC
Milan and considered the world's best player, Denmark forward Michael
Laudrup, forward Juergen Klinsmann and retiring defender Lothar
Matthaus of Germany and French midfielder David Ginola highlight coach
Richard Moller-Nielsen's squad.
A sellout crowd of more than 70,000 is expected for the games.

Romario to join Valencia next month-report

SAO PAULO (Jul 12, 1996 - 21:23 EST) -- Brazilian World Cup striker
Romario will return to Spain next month to play for first division
Valencia under a new $8 million, three-year contract, local television
said Friday.
TV Globo said Romario, who helped lead Flamengo to the Rio
championship with 26 goals, will play several more friendly matches in
Brazil before leaving for Spain.
Romario left Barcelona last year complaining of homesickness to play
for Flamengo but was reportedly unhappy about sharing the limelight at
the Rio club with fellow striker Bebeto.
He was not chosen for the Brazilian national team travelling to
Atlanta this month to play in the Olympics.
Earlier this week, Brazilian attacking midfielder Rivaldo of Palmeiras
was reported close to signing with Spain's Deportivo La Coruna.
Local news reports said Rivaldo, one of Brazil's hottest young
players, was working out personal details of a five-year contract with
the Spanish club.
And on Monday, the manager of former European champion Marseille said
Brazilian defender Adilson will join the French club within the next
few days.
Michel Roussier said Adilson, a tough defender who helped Brazil's
Gremio win the South American Libertadores Cup last year, would sign
with Marseille provided he passed a medical.

Two soccer leagues merge to form second division to MLS
__________________________________________________________________________

(c) 1996 Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Va. (Jul 11, 1996 - 22:00 EST) -- Major League Soccer now
has a minor league.
After years of competition for players and media attention, two
widespread, little-known professional soccer leagues announced
Thursday they will merge into one 24-team league that will be a
"second division" to the United States' new major league.
"We are extremely pleased that our many days of negotiations have
proven successful so that we can move the development of professional
soccer in the United States forward," said Francisco Marcos, who will
oversee the operations of the new league.
Marcos is the commissioner of the United System of Independent Soccer
Leagues, a 10-year-old league with 87 teams nationwide. The USISL is
merging with the A-League, which will be the name of the new league.
The new league will be classified as a second division league --
soccer's rough equivalent of a farm system -- by the U.S. Soccer
Federation. It will feature teams in markets across the United States,
plus Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto in Canada.
The merger followed several months of negiotiations after the two
leagues were brought together by the international soccer company
Umbro, a sponsor of both leagues.

Maradona to be welcomed in China
__________________________________________________________________________

BEIJING (Jul 11, 1996 - 13:17 EST) - Argentine soccer star Diego
Maradona may face a snubbing by Japan but millions of Chinese soccer
fans are waiting for his first visit later this month.
Maradona and his Boca Juniors team were contracted to play two games
in China, on July 25 against the Guo An team in Beijing and on July 27
against the Sichuan Quanxing team in the southwest city of Chengdu, an
official of the company sponsoring the tour said on Thursday.
"The visa is no problem for Maradona," he said. "We have detailed
clauses in the contract which give us a penalty if Maradona does not
play."
Maradona may sign a contract to play for a club in the Japanese league
if he is allowed into the country, but Japanese sources were skeptical
his request for a visa would be granted because of his drugs record.
Tokyo denied the former Argentina captain a visa to play a friendly
before the 1994 World Cup finals -- from which he was expelled after
failing a doping test -- because of cases of cocaine use in Italy and
Argentina.
In China, both Boca Junior games will be televised nationwide live to
an expected audience of millions. Soccer is among the most popular
spectator sports in China.
Guo An and Quanxing play in the first division of China's professional
league.

* UNITED NEAR POBORSKY DEAL
Manchester United moved a step nearer
signing Czech star Karel Poborsky when
legal director Maurice Watkins talked
to officials of his club Slavia Prague.
Watkins flew to Prague to try and seal
a deal for the midfielder who made a
name for himself in Euro '96.
Poborsky has indicated he would like to
join United but as he has two years
left on his Slavia contract the club
want around ú3.5m for his signature.
United will want a quick deal with the
players back in training next week.
* TROPHY TARGET FOR VILLA BUY
Fernando Nelson as set his sights on
trophy glory with Aston Villa after
missing the European Championships.
The ú1.75m full-back, who starts
training with Villa on Monday, was left
out of Portugal's final Euro '96 squad.
"Signing for Villa has more than made
up for that disappointment and I'm
really looking forward to playing in
the Premier League," he said.
"To be up against Bergkamp, Ravanelli,
Gullit, Cantona, Vialli and the rest
will be a tremendous challenge."

* THOMAS TO DECIDE ON MONDAY
Contract rebel Michael Thomas will
decide on Monday if his future lies at
Anfield or on the continent with an
Italian side.
The Liverpool midfielder has held talks
with Reggiana about a possible move to
Italy for next season.
He explained: "The next contract is the
most important I will have to sign and
hopefully a decision will be made on
Monday sorting it out."
* EUROPEAN PROBE ON BECK DEAL
An EC official is probing claims that
Danish striker Mikkel Beck is being
stopped from joining Middlesbrough by
the German Football Federation.
Beck believes the DFB is violating the
Bosman ruling by allowing his German
club Fortuna Cologne to extend his
contract unilaterally by a year.
Beck had signed a contract with
Middlesbrough that should have brought
him to the Riverside Stadium on July 1.
* WALKER REJECTS DERBY APPROACH
Norwich have turned down a bid of
around ú1m from Derby County for star
winger Keith O'Neill.
Norwich manager Mike Walker has
described the offer for the highly
rated Republic of Ireland international
as "derisory".
But Derby are expected to come back
with an improved bid for O'Neill, who
is also being tracked by North London
giants Arsenal and Tottenham.
* LUKIC FINALLY READY TO GET TESTIMONIAL
John Lukic hopes to arrange his
testimonial match at Elland Road
sometime next month.
The former Leeds goalkeeper was granted
a testimonial more than a year ago but
efforts to arrange a game were hindered
by wrangles over costs and policing.
Lukic is now hoping to play against
quality foreign opposition on Sunday,
August 11 or Monday, August 12.

RECORD CROWD SEES EAST, BRAZIL TRIUMPH IN SOCCER EXTRAVAGANZA
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Roberto Carlos scored a goal in the 78th
minute to lift Brazil to a 2-1 victory over the FIFA World All Stars
and Tampa Bay's Steve Pittman got the game-winner as West defeated the
East 3-2 in the first Major League Soccer all-star game.
The Brazil game were played before a crowd of 78,416, a record-setting
crowd at Giants Stadium. It was the largest crowd for a sporting event
at the stadium and was surpassed only by Pope John Paul II's
appearance in the fall of 1995.
The majority of the Brazilian team was composed of its Olympic squad,
including slick 19-year old midfielder Juninho, who his currently
plying his skills with Middlesborough in England's First Division.
Pittman of the Tampa Bay Mutiny scored in the 88th minute to give the
East a 3-2 victory over the West in the all-star game.
"This was one of the best days I've had, scoring with Giants Stadium
full," said Tab Ramos, a U.S. national team star who grew up a few
miles away in Hillside, N.J. "It's something I've dreamed about since
I was a kid."
Said East defender Alexi Lalas, who left the Italian League to play
for the New England Revolution: "People ask me if I'm surprised, but
I'm not. "This is why we all came back here and made this commitment.
We have some of the best players in the world playing in the MLS and
this all-star game was as good as any in the world."
Pittman took a pass at the top of the box on the left side and
negotiated through a pair of defenders before booting a left-footer
past Dallas Burn goalkeeper Mark Dodd.
Pittman's Tampa Bay teammate, Carlos Valderrama, had two assists and
was named Most Valuable Player.
West goalkeeper Jorge Campos of the Los Angeles Galaxy and East
midfielder John Harkes of the D.C. United played for FIFA.
Giovanni Savarese of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars tied the game
at 2-2 in the 69th minute. D.C. United's Steve Rammel sent the ball in
front, saving it from going out of bounds on the left side of the net.
Dodd got his left arm on the ball, but Savarese, celebrating his 25th
birthday, stormed the net and touched it in.
Preki and Jason Kreis scored four minutes apart near the end of the
first half as the West All-Stars assumed a 2-1 lead.
Preki, who plays for the Kansas City Wiz, tied the game, 1-1, in the
33rd minute. The West had a free kick outside of the box and Mauricio
Cienfuegos of the Los Angeles Galaxy fed the ball to Preki, whose
long, curling shot from just outside of the box on the right side
eluded East goalkeeper Tony Meola of the MetroStars.
The Burn's Kreis worked a perfect give-and-go with the Galaxy's
Eduardo Hurtado four minutes later to give the West the lead. Kreis
was in the middle of the pitch outside of the box. He exchanged the
ball with Hurtado and moved to the net, getting wide open to take the
feed before slipping the ball past Meola's left side.
The East opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Tab Ramos of the
MetroStars smoked the ball past goalkeeper Jorge Campos from 15 yards
out on the right side. Valderrama had the ball on the left side above
the box and moved right, drawing the defense towards him before
chipping a pass to Ramos, whose kick traveled into the top left corner
of the net at 71 miles per hour.
The colorful Campos thrilled the capacity crowd with a forearm save in
the fourth minute that denied Mutiny striker Roy Lassiter. The keeper
joined the attack in the 30th minute, racing up the pitch with the
ball and carrying it to the top right of the box, but could not get a
shot off.
Campos added an explosive diving stop of a cross by Welton of the New
England Revolution in the 24th minute before bringing the crowd to its
feet with his offensive skills. He has played offense on a number of
occasions for the Galaxy this season.
The early part of the second half belonged to Dodd, who made a diving
left forearm save on Savarese in the 63rd minute. Three minutes later,
Welton missed right, but Dodd was in position for the save.

RAMOS MAKES HISTORY IN OWN BACKYARD
By Peter Madden
ESPNET SportsZone
_________________________________________________________________
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- In an atmosphere that would put Giants and
Jets fans to shame, the MLS East and West All-Stars thrilled the
sellout crowd at Giants Stadium with daring passes and spectacular
one-on-one play.
With all of the international talent assembled, it was Kearny, New
Jersey's own Tab Ramos who made history, scoring the first goal in the
inaugural MLS All-Star Game.
Ramos, who grew up watching the New York Cosmos of the North American
Soccer League in Giants Stadium as a kid, plays for the host team, the
New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
His goal, a half-volley blast from the right of goalie Jorge Campos,
found the top corner, thanks to a pretty feed from Carlos Valderamma.
The crowd erupted, sparking the debate as to whether Sunday's crowd
was louder than a Giants or Jets game. As for Ramos, it was a dream
come true, literally.
"It sounds corny, but I dreamed that I'd score a goal on Sunday," he
said. "I didn't know it was going to be the first one though."
Ramos, who attended North Carolina State and played in all four games
for the United States in the 1994 World Cup, was the national high
school player of the year in 1983. He was drafted by the Cosmos out of
high school but decided to attend college instead. He spent five
seasons in the Spanish Second Division and has played the last two
years in Mexico. The experience on Sunday, however, is something he
won't forget anytime soon.
"The talent on the field out there is unbelievable," he said. "For
American fans to be able to watch some of the best players in the
world playing together is great."
Although the game was in New Jersey, one had the feeling that they
were in Sao Paulo, Brazil, or Mexico City. At times the crowd noise
sounded more like an eighth-grade band practice, with trumpets, drums
and bongos scattered throughout the stands.
"The atmosphere out there was great," Ramos said. "American fans get a
bad rap for not understanding the game, but today, they were into it
and really made the game have an international feel."
As for the goal, it was one of the highlights of a brilliant and
distinguished soccer career for Ramos.
"I must have had 50 or 100 family and friends in the stands today," he
said. "To score the first goal in the All-Star Game was special.
"Who said dreams don't come true."
His other Kearny mates, goalkeeper Tony Meola and midfielder John
Harkes, understood the significance of Ramos' goal.
"This league was put together by Americans, for Americans," Meola
said. "To have Tab score the inaugural goal is something special. It's
something none of us will forget."
"Tab said he'd like to score one," Harkes said. "He came through in
front of half the town of Kearny."
Ramos, who in the 1994 World Cup assisted on Ernie Stewart's
game-winning goal against Columbia then suffered a fractured skull in
a quarterfinal loss to Brazil, hopes that more Americans get into MLS
and keep the sport growing.
"This league can make it," he said. "We have played in front of big
crowds all over the country. The support has been great. I hope it
continues."
If he keeps scoring brilliant goals like he did on Sunday, more and
more youngsters may be calling Ramos and other American players heroes
instead of the traditional sports idols.

maximum width of 100 yards.MLS fields may have a minimum length of 100
yards and a maximum length of 130 yards.
[top]

have a circumference of 27" -28" and a weight of 14 oz.-16 oz.
[top]
Rule 3 - Number of Players
Each team consists of 11 players, one of whom must be the goalkeeper. A
maximum of three substitutes, plus the goalkeeper, may be used. If an MLS

its
three allowed field player substitutes.
[top]
Rule 4 - Player Equipment
A player's uniform must consist of shirt, shorts, socks, shinguards and shoes.
The goalkeeper must wear colors which distinguish him from the other players.
[top]
Rule 5 - Referees
One referee and two linesmen are appointed for each match. The referee is
responsible for control of the game and his decisions are final.
[top]
Rule 6 - Referee's Assistant (formerly Linesman)
Two referee's assistants will assist the referee by indicating offside, when
the
ball
is out of play, which team is entitled to a corner kick or throw in and by
indicating other infringments of the laws of the game.
[top]
Rule 7 - Duration of the Game
The game shall be divided into two equal periods of 45 minutes each. If a MLS
match is tied after 90 minutes, a shootout will be held to determine the
winner.
See MLS tiebreaker procedure.
[top]
Rule 8 - The Start of Play
A flip of a coin decides which team will kick off. Each team must stay in its
own
half of the field and the defending players must be at least 10 yards from the
ball
when it is kicked.
After a goal, the team scored upon will kick off. After halftime, the teams
change
ends and the kickoff will be taken by the opposite team to that which started
the
game. A goal cannot be scored directly from a kickoff.
[top]
Rule 9 - Ball In and Out of Play
The ball is out of play when (a) it has wholly crossed the goal line or
touchline,
whether on the ground or in the air, or (b) when the game has been stopped by
the referee.
[top]
Rule 10 - Method of Scoring
A goal is scored when the whole of the ball has passed over the goal line,
between the goals posts and under the cross bar, whether on the ground in or in
the air.
[top]
Rule 11 - Offside
A player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponent's goal line
than
the ball, unless:
a) He is in his own half of the field of play, or
b) There are at least two of his opponents even with him or nearer to
their
own goal line than he is.
A player shall only be declared offside and penalized for being in an offside
position, if, at the moment the ball touches, or is played by, one of his
teammates, he is, in the opinion of the referee:
i) Interfering with play or with an opponent, or
ii) Seeking to gain an advantage by being in that position.
A player shall not be declared offside by the referee
i) Merely because of his being in an offside position, or
ii) If he receives the ball direct from a goal-kick, a corner-kick, a
throw-in,
or when it has been dropped by a referee.
If a player is declared offside, the referee shall award an indirect free kick,
which
shall be taken by a player of the opposing team from the place where the
infringement occurred.
[top]
Rule 12 - Fouls and Misconduct
A player who intentionally attempts to or actually: (a) kicks, (b), trips, (c)
jumps
at, (d) charges violently, (e) charges from behind, (f) strikes or spits at,
(g)
holds
or (h) pushes an opponent, or (I) intentionally handles the ball shall be
penalized by a direct free kick. Any one of these nine offenses committed in
the
penalty area by a defender will result in the award of a penalty kick to the
offensive team.
A player committing less flagrant violations such as offside, dangerous play,
obstruction or ungentlemanly conduct will be penalized by an indirect free
kick.
[top]
Rule 13 - Free Kicks
Free kicks are classified into two categories: "Direct" (from which a goal can
be
scored directly against the offending side) and "Indirect" (from which a goal
cannot be scored unless the ball has been touched by a player other than the
kicker before entering the goal).
For all free kicks the offending team must be at least 10 yards from the ball

throw in from the spot where it went out and by a player from the opposite team
to the player who last touched it. A goal cannot be scored directly from a
throw-in.
[top]
Rule 16 - Goal Kick
When the ball has wholly crossed the goal line after being last touched by a
player from the attacking team, it is put back into play by a kick from the
goal
area by the defending team.
[top]
Rule 17 - Corner Kick

* GUNNERS LINKED WITH COSTA
Arsenal are considering a club record
ú9m swoop for Portuguese ace Rui Costa,
according to reports.
An article in the Daily Express claims
the 24-year-old midfielder, who set
Euro '96 alight, is Gunners boss Bruce
Rioch's prime target.
Costa became Portugal's most expensive
export when he joined Fiorentina from
Benfica for ú5m in 1994, but it is
believed they would be willing to sell.
Rioch is understood to have in the
region of ú15m in the club coffers.
* BORO DENY RUMOURS
Premiership side Middlesbrough have
denied reports that they have yet to
sign Italian ace Fabrizio Ravanelli.
Chief Executive Keith Lamb, who handled
the ú7 million move earlier this month,
said: "The talks with him went well.
Negotiations were over in an hour."
Ravanelli is due in England at the
weekend for a medical and will attend a
press conference at the Riverside
Stadium on Monday.
Then he will travel to Malaysia for a
nine-day tour with his new team.
* BIRMINGHAM SIGN MYSTERY STRIKER
Birmingham manager Trevor Francis is
due to announce the record signing of a
Premiership striker today.
The midlands club have not yet named
the player, but Middlesbrough forward
Jan Fjortoft has recently been linked
with Birmingham.
The Norwegian scored just eight goals
last season and his place at Boro is
under threat after the arrival of
Fabrizio Ravanelli from Juventus.
Other possibles include ú1m-rated
Blackburn striker Mike Newell.

* MAGPIES GO-AHEAD FOR NEW HOME
Newcastle have been given the green
light to make a bid to build a new
65,000-seat stadium in the city.
Hundreds of local residents, upset over
the prospect of a huge sports complex
on their doorstep, demonstrated as
councillors arrived for the meeting.
But the proposal that Premership
runners-up Newcastle should be invited
to seek planning approval to build in
Castle Leazes Park was approved.
* ALBERT PREDICTS TITLE SUCCESS
Philippe Albert sounded a warning to
champions Manchester United as he
prepared to start pre-season training
with Newcastle United.
Despite last season's disappointing
finish, the Belgian international
insisted: "The squad here is good
enough to win the championship."
"We will be even better than last
season because players like Faustino
Asprilla will have settled in."
* BAYERN MUNICH duo Lothar Matthaus and
Jurgen Klinsmann have settled their
differences after a "peace summit" in
New York, according to German reports.
* DERBY COUNTY manager Jim Smith has
booked his squad in for 10 sessions
with sports psychiatrist Bill Beswick
to aid their Premiership preparations.
* BROLIN DISCIPLINED BY ANGRY WILKINSON
Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson
has disciplined troubled star Tomas
Brolin for failing to turn up for
pre-season training.
And the boss admitted that the ú4.5m
pound record signing would not be
coming back to Elland Road.
Wilkinson said: "Action has been taken
accordingly." It is believed Brolin's
wages have been stopped.

* GUNNERS DENY COSTA LINK
Arsenal have denied reports suggesting
they are set to make a ú9m swoop for
Portuguese ace Rui Costa.
There has been no major summer transfer
activity at Highbury but managing
director Ken Friar said: "There is no
foundation in this report whatsoever.
"We are constantly being linked with
all sorts of players but we are
prepared to wait until the right one

Friar said the club had been offered
Costa by three different agents.

Manchester City are anxious to unveil

But the First Division club have denied
that chairman Francis Lee is seeking to
block any possible future investment.
City's managing director Colin Barlow
said: "The parties who represent this

He added: "We have not received

* SOUTHGATE PRAYING FOR STICK
Gareth Southgate reports back for
training with Aston Villa today -
hoping he will receive plenty of stick
over his Euro 96 penalty misery.
Southgate, who has just returned from a
holiday in Bali, said: "I hope the lads
have a dig at me over the penalty. It
would be unnatural if they didn't.
"I also expect to go around the country
next season and get a lot of stick from
opposition fans - I can handle that."
DAILLY STAR SMITH EXCLUSIVE
Derby boss Jim Smith continued his
Premiership preparations by buying
Dundee United's unsettled midfielder
Christian Dailly.
The Rams, promoted as first division
runners-up, have paid an initial
ú500,000 for the Scottish Under-21
star, who was out of contract.
But they could eventually pay twice
that depending on first team and
international appearances.
* POBORSKY SET TO STAY AT HOME
Karel Poborsky looks set to remain a
Slavia Prague player in a dramatic new
development in his transfer saga.
The club now say they want to hang onto
Poborsky as they finalise their
preparations for their appearance in
the European Champions Cup.
And, according to sources in the Czech
Republic, Slavia are prepared to hike
up the transfer fee to such a level
that any deal would be untenable.

Dodatni brojevi (od 26 naviše) namenjeni su igračima omladinskog
pogona koji će eventualno nastupati u prvom timu, dakle igračima
bez profesionalnog ugovora. Takođe igračima koji u toku sezone
(npr. u zimskom prelaznom roku) pristupe prvom timu.
Igrač koji na početku sezone bude zabeležen pod jednim brojem
ne može taj broj ustupiti nekom drugom igraču. Ukoliko taj ode u
inostranstvo, uskočiće umesto njega neki fudbaler sa brojem
26 ili većim. Dakle, uzmeš broj, nema nazad.
Od sezone 97/98 u svim profesionalnim ligama Evrope biće obavezni
personalni brojevi, najverovatnije i imena tj. prezimena igrača.
