Postovani ljubitelji Formule 1,
imam malu molbicu za prave statisticare. Posto sam pravio tabelu za proslu
sezonu, ukljucujuci pozicije posle treninga i trke sve to uobliceno bodovima,
pred kraj sam izgubio strpljenje i volju i promakle su mi poslednje 4 trke da
zapisem pozicije posle kvalifikacija. Zato molim urednog statisticara ako moze
da mi ostavi rezultate treninga sa poslednje 4 trke, a kao nagradu SVI cete
dobiti
uredno sredjenu tabelu u Excel-u.

Odlicna trka. :)
Kakav je to start bio. Sumaher i Vilnev. Jedan do drugog; Vilnev uz pomoc
malog "slide"-a (i Sumahera ;) izlece u prvoj krivini. U istom trenutku
jos oko 5-10 bolida izlece sa staze ili udara u druge bolide i dolazi do
prekida trke koji traje nekih 15tak minuta. :)
Nastavak trke. Fantastican start Sumahera (citaj: ocajan start Vilneva ;)
koji dolazi na kratko na celnu poziciju ;), ali ga Vilnev vec na kraju
prvog kruga obilazi. Za nekih 4-6 krugova to isto cini i Gerhard Berger,
koji je sve vreme fantasticno vozio (po meni i najbolje od svih) ...
...
Na kraju trke, izuzetno napeto. Berger polako sustize Vilneva sa nekih
13 sekundi razlike na oko 4-5 sekundi, medjutim ne uspeva da ga i pretekne
zbog zaostalih bolida (citaj: Coulthard ;) koji su ga samo usporavali.
Hakkinen, Sumaher i Alezi. Borba za 4, 5 i 6 poziciju. Svi u 2,5 sekunde.
Hakkinen se polako odaljava i ostaju Sumaher i Alezi. Razlika 0,8 sekundi.
Alezi, na moju zalost, ne uspeva da pretekne "Weltmeister" Sumahera :))
(tako ga Nemci zovu) i mora da se zadovolji sa samo jednim bodom ...
Ukratko, ko nije gledao trku, gadno se ispalio ... :)

At the start Villeneuve made a tardy start, allowing Schumacher to take the
lead. Following Villeneuve were Berger, Panis, and Hakkinen. It was all for
nothing as Magnussen was stranded on the grid and unable to be moved. Also
Villeneuve took a excursion off the track as Schumacher took him at the first
corner. The German had gone in the inside of the first corner and clearly
had the corner. He Canadian should have conceded defeat, but didn't and it
almost cost him the race. Also caught up in the drama was a Jordan which
launched Damon Hills Arrows at the same corner. Further round the circuit
Barrichello was a victim of Irvine. The race was black flagged. For
Magnussen his race was over - both Stewarts were out, and Barrichello had
priority at this race for the spare car. Another possible out was Hill.
His race car was already out before the race with an oil leak. The spare
now needed a new nose and new rear suspension. Amazingly the team changed
the suspension at the back in time for the restart (a total of little over
10 minutes!). Irvine also needed a new car, which was set up for Schumacher.
This would cause problems later. Frentzen also took to the spare car.
The second start went almost without drama, as Villeneuve got away well but
Schumacher did it better and took the lead for a moment. Hakkinen also made
a blistering start and attacked Villeneuve, but didn't quite manage it.
Katayama was stranded on the grid. Already the front two cars were pulling
away, with Villeneuve having the advantage over Schumacher. By lap 2 Hill
had already made up two places to 7th, and Villeneuve had made a 1.1 second
gap over Schumacher. Hakkinen in third was a further 1.5 seconds adrift,
followed by Berger, Alesi, and Panis. Frentzen was down in 12th place.
Larini was also making progress, taking Trulli for 16th. By lap 6
Villeneuve had a 4 second lead over Schumacher. Berger, meanwhile, had
caught up with the leading group, and was challenging hard for Schumachers
place. He took it briefly, but the German soon took it back. Berger was not
going to give up without a fight. Frentzen had now made up a place and was
running 11th. By lap 8 Villeneuve was pulling away from Schumacher and had
an 7.7 second cussion. Further back Diniz took Irvine for 14th place. By lap
11 the lead was 10.3 seconds, and Schumacher was clearly holding up Berger
who could challenge for the lead. Berger finally managed it on lap 12 on the
main straight, where the Benetton had a clear advantage over the Ferrari.
Berger was soon chasing hard after Villeneuve.
Further down the grid Diniz retired from 15th place, as Barrichello pulled
into the pits to retire the sole Stewart. Herbert was also in the pits -
too early for a routine stop - and Frentzen was making ground on Fisichella
in 9th place. By lap 20 Villeneuve had a 9 second lead over Berger, with
Schumacher, Hakkinen, Alesi, and Panis completing the top 6. Herbert, now
near the back of the field, took Verstappen. Coulthard, who had been pushing
Hill hard for 7th place, pitted early presumably to try and take him in the
pits. He rejoined the race in clear air, but 14th place. Berger was soon
also to pit, as did Alesi and Irvine. By lap 25 the positions were
Villeneuve, Schumacher (+23 seconds), Panis (+27 seconds), Berger (+37
seconds), Hakkinen (+44 seconds), and Ralf Schumacher (+46 seconds).
Fisichella was next to pit on lap 26, with Villeneuve pitting and Schumacher
entering as the Canadian had left. Villeneuve was able to rejoin in the
lead, with a 1.3 second lead over Panis, Berger, Hill, Frentzen and
Hakkinen. The Goodyear tyres were not wearing well, and the Bridgestones of
Hill and Panis were working very well - so well that they were able to get
by with a 1 stop strategy later on against Goodyear's 2. On lap 28 Frentzen
pitted and got away, if rather untidily. By lap 31 the Bridgestone runners
were preparing for their only stop, and the tyres were performing very well,
with Panis setting very good times just before his stop. Panis finally
pitted on lap 33. On lap 33, Irvine was back in the pits and having his
seatbelts refastened. Lap 36 saw the order of Villeneuve, Berger, Hakkinen,
Hill, Schumacher, Alesi, Panis, Herbert, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher,
Frentzen and Fisichella. Hill was fending off Schumacher and Alesi, but was
due to stop. Unfortunately the Englishman decided to fight them for another
lap, they got by and cost Damon a chance of being further up the field later
on. On lap 37 Hill pitted.
On lap 40 bizarely Hakkinen pitted. Ralf Schumacher had also pitted, and was
having a lengthy stop after a problem with the right rear wheel. The order
was now Villeneuve, Berger, Schumacher, Alesi, Panis, and Herbert. Coulthard
was now also in for his second stop, soon to be followed by the rest of the
Goodyear runners in the following laps. Villeneuve was struggling at the
point, unable to lap Coulthard, and losing time rapidly to the advancing
Berger. Williams were ready in the pits, and Villeneuve pitted. Schumacher
similarly was in and out. Berger now had the lead, but still had to stop.
Villeneuve rejoined the race in second place. Alesi also joined in the pit
action, allowing Panis to move up to 3rd. Berger extended his lead over
Villeneuve to 18 seconds, but this was not enough to retain the lead when
he pitted. Villeneuve was now back into the lead. Frentzen made his second
stop. The order on lap 49 was now Villeneuve, Berger, Panis, Hakkinen,
Schumacher and Alesi. The top 6 were followed by Frentzen, Herbert,
Fisichella, Hill, Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. The latter was soon to
retire at the start of the pit entry lane.
The race now settled down with no great drama other than hot looking brakes
on Villeneuve's Williams, and Berger having a go at chasing for the lead.
On lap 67 Berger was 4 seconds adrift, but had to get by Katayama and
Verstappen to have a chance of going for the leader. On lap 69 Berger got
past and 4 laps to go to get the victory he wanted. Villeneuve was now the
one caught up in traffic, but a courteous Coulthard let him through. Sadly
Hill's valiant drive was over as he pulled into the pits with an oil fire.
The rest stayed settled on the track. The disappointment of the race however
had to be Frentzen's unspectacular drive to 9th place.

F1: Brazilian GP winners' press conference
JV Oh it feels great mostly after Melbourne where we
had been so strong and we couldn't even go any
further than the first lap and it looked like it was
going to be the same thing here, so it's a good
thing there was a red flag. I'm not sure why there
was a red flag but then after that the car was very
strong. We didn't have enough downforce for the slow
corners but we were pretty good down the straight so
it balanced out. The car was really strong until the
second pit stop and then somehow the tyres had less
grip. I don't know why but the car was quick enough
to stay in front.
Q What happened on that first start, can you tell us
some more about that?
JV Yeah, it was a little bit more slippery on the
outside and I didn't want to give in to Michael.
That's about it, so I went into the corner a little
bit too fast.
Q Now on the second start Michael beat you to the
first corner again, but then you seemed to be very
successful getting back to him?
JV Yeah, we could see from the trap speed this morning
that they were a little bit slower down the straight
and we took the start with new tyres, so I knew that
on the first two laps if he got in front of me I
would have a good chance to get by him.
Q Towards the end of the end of the race after your
second pit stop, were you aware that Gerhard was
catching you?
JV Yeah, most definitely, he was a little bit too fast
towards the end and he was catching up pretty hard
so it was tough to keep the gap.
Q Gerhard, we last saw you on the podium at the
British grand prix last year so you must be
delighted to be here today?
GB Well yeah. It was time again to come back here.
Q Now you were catching Jacques towards the end. Did
you think that you could actually get up to him and
maybe make an attempt to pass him?
GB Well yes, there was a stage where I think I could
get to him but I know how difficult it would be to
pass him because he's quite quick on the straight
but I still drive very hard because I thought if I
can be the last three or four laps under his gearbox
maybe by mistake or by overlapping another car maybe
I could have a chance but unfortunately it was quite
difficult to overlap some backmarkers. Damon was
quite difficult to overtake and two other ones. I
saw Jacques lost a bit and I lost the same so I just
couldn't do it. I had the same problem as Jacques on
the second part of the race, with the second set of
tyres suddenly in the middle of the part the tyre
lost grip and I was struggling to do good lap times.
Q You qualified third yesterday and finished second
today does this mean Benetton is back on track?
GB Well I think it's a bit like we show in the winter
testing. After the first race of course everybody
thought we maybe went underweight in the winter but
we didn't. We just lost the first race by some
mistakes in the setup on the Friday and Saturday and
that's it. It's very easy at the moment to, if you
lose a little bit away, you are not with the first
three and that's it.
Q Olivier, you won the Monaco grand prix last year but
more importantly this is the first podium appearance
for the Prost team and Bridgestone tyres so it's a
great result for you and your team.
OP Yes, I'm very happy because I make a very big risk
for strategy - just one stop but I see the
Bridgestone tyres, the wear is very, very nice and
very easy to one stop. I started very good. It was
very easy to follow Jean and Michael Schumacher with
one stop and after stop it is very easy to control
because it's never traffic and it's very easy to
control the laps. I'm very happy for the team, and
Bridgestone also, because for the first year it's a
very good job.

njegovi krajnji dometi ove sezone. Bridgestone gume su u kombinaciji
sa Mugenovim motorom izgleda dobitna kombinacija, a tu je i Prost
koji je izgleda preuzimanjem tima doneo potrebnu motivaciju koja je
falila Ligieru prošle godine.

Dobro, de, priznajem. Nije "tupko" :). U svakom slučaju, da nema talenta
ne bi bio u Prost-ovom timu... Valjda "profesor" zna da prepozna dobrog
vozača kad ga vidi...

BridgeStone gume se, izgleda mi, pokazuju mnogo bolje od GoodYear, i
mislim da treba samo sačekati kišicu pa da GoodYear ode na zasluženi
odmor.
Lično sam navijao da u Brazilu padne kiša (pošto ima običaj da padne
baš oko trke), ali 'em što nisam gledao trku, 'em kiša nije pala.

Villeneuve Off To Prost?
There is a rumour that Jacques Villeneuve may be in discussion with Prost
for next year. Jacques manager Craig Pollack has been seen dining with
Alain Prost.
Prost run Bridgestone tyres and from next year they will have a works
Peugeot engine. Both Peugeot and Bridgestone would be keen to see the World
Champion in one of their teams and could help Prost fund the move.
Jacques contract with Williams is up for renewal this year.
Alesi Back In The Good Books
Jean Alesi finally managed to finish a race, and in the points too. His
performance was overshadowed by his team mate but he was steady and workman
like. This has raised the Benetton teams view of the driver and hopefully
his results will get better as the season progresses. The Benetton car is
one of a few that improved greatly between Australia and Brazil.
Benetton / Honda Deal Expected Soon
The Benetton / Mugen Honda engine deal is expected to be announced soon.
Benetton have been involved with Honda through motorcycle racing and it has
long been expected that the Japanese giant would replace Renault when the
current engine supply deal finished.
Williams / BMW Rumour Back Again!
You can't keep a good rumour down. Especially if it involves Williams and
or BMW. The two companies have a long history of a rumoured engine deal,
this time however there is a new twist.
Williams have a two year contract with the French Mecachrome company to use
Renault engines. These are expected to cost Williams around 20 Million for
the duration. BMW are now rumoured to be in negotiation to pay some of the
cost in return for BMW badges being put on the engines. The 2 year deal
which will finish in 2000 just overlaps the rumoured BMW engine entry of
1999.
Bridgestone Warning Shot
The Bridgestone shod teams fired a warning shot at the Goodyear tyres this
weekend. The Prost and Arrows teams are hardly top flight, yet Panis and
Hill both managed to qualify in the top ten and due to the performance of
the tyres both teams were able to run a one stop strategy. Panis drove
brilliantly, running as high a second at one point, finally finishing third
and Hill managed to run fourth for a while but retired with an engine bay
fire. The circuits that are hard on tyres could see the Bridgestone teams
performing better than expected.
BIC Deal For Prost
You may have noticed the BIC logo on the Prost cars last weekend, that is
because the team have signed a four year deal with the disposable pen and
razor company.
New Ford Engine
Tyrrell will be able to make use of the next evolution of the customer Ford
Cosworth V8 from the San Marino GP. The unit has more power which will be
welcome.
Brazil Review
Jacques Villeneuve came back from the disaster at Melbourne with a perfect
win. Though at the start it looked as though he had blown it again. At the
start Schumacher got away brilliantly and held the inside line into the
first corner. Villeneuve desperately tried to hold onto the outside line
but a combination of speed, cold tyres and being off the racing line saw
him slide off the track onto the grass and gravel. He was followed by
Frentzen and Hill who collided with the Jordan of Fisichella damaging his
rear suspension and front wing.
Villeneuve and Hill probably couldn't believe their luck when the race was
red flagged due to the Stewart of Barrichello still being on the grid.
At the restart, Schumacher beat Villeneuve to the first corner again, this
time the Canadian let the Ferrari go and settled in behind it. Behind them,
everyone managed to get round the first corner and Hakkinen led the chasing
pack followed by Berger, Alesi, Panis, Hill and Coulthard, with Frentzen
13th.
At the end of the first lap Villeneuve surged past the Ferrari of
Schumacher and went into the lead, by lap 9 Berger had performed an almost
identical pass to relegate the Ferrari to third place.
Many of the teams tried to out think each other with pit stop strategy and
in doing so they all came up with the same plan. This led to a scramble of
stops as the McLaren and Benetton teams stopped almost at the same time.
Williams held out until lap 25 for their first stop and the mid race order
saw Villeneuve leading Panis with Berger, Hill, Hakkinen and Schumacher
making up the rest of the top six. Panis and Hill had yet to stop, but both
were on single stop strategies compared to the two stops that everyone else
was making.
After the second round of stops the race order had settled down, Villeneuve
still led, but now Berger was back in second while Panis dropped to third
after his stop. Hakkinen was fourth, Schumacher fifth and Alesi sixth.
During the closing stages of the race it became clear that Gerhard Berger
was closing on Villeneuve, gradually chipping away at the Canadian's lead,
the end result though was that Berger ran out of time before he could close
up on the Williams, too many back markers and not enough laps.

Danas je u 6:00 po nasem vremenu odrzana druga trka Indy Car sampionata i to
u Surfers Paradise. Pol poziciju je osvojio po sesti put zaredom (rekord)
Alex Zanardi i to u poslednjim trenucima kvalifikacija ispred Pol Trejsija.
U samoj trci bilo je cak 8 puta zuta zastava... Nije odvozeno svih 65 krugova
posto se dostiglo punih 2 sata voznje tako da je trka zavrsena pre planiranih
65 krugova :) Samo da pomenem da je Christian Fittipaldi doziveo tezak udar
u zid i kako Edvards rece, izgleda povredio nogu, tako da nece voziti trku
sledece nedelje... Tokom trke vodila se borba izmedju Zanardija i Trejsija
za prvo mesto. Iza njih su stalno bili, sa izvesnim zaostatkom, Moore i
Vasser. Blundell je opet ocajno startovao i sve vreme se vukao negde oko
desetog mesta... Inace koliko mi se cini sve vreme najbrzi bolid na stazi
pored Trejsija i Zanardija je bio Scott Pruett. On se nalazio dugo iza
Mauricija Gugelmina negde oko 6-7 mesta... Unser se ocajno kvalifikovao, cini
mi se, na 16. mestu i tokom trke mu je otpao tocak (!). U vezi samog toka trke,
na startu je Moore prestigao Vassera i zauzeo 3. poziciju, vec sam pomenuo da
je Blundell jadno startovao... Trejsi i Zanardi su se brzo odvojili od ostatka
vozaca i tokom cele trke niko nije mogao da ih prati. Trejsi je kasnije
prestigao Zanardija i brzo se odvojio, ali, naravno, uskoro je bio neki sudar,
tako da je pokazana zuta zastava i Zanardi mu je opet bio za petama... Tako
je bilo non-stop, kad god bi doslo do nekog odvajanja vozaca, odmah se neko
slupao i zuta zastava... Nekim cudom Andretti i Pruett su napredovali, iako
je staza teska za prestizanje... Dolazimo do vrhunca staze, kada su se Trejsi
i Zanardi slupali... ulazili su u krivinu i onaj mali pohlepnik od Zanardija
nije hteo da pusti Trejsija (koji je bio sa unutrasnje strane), tako da su
obojica izletela... Idiot od Zanardija se kasnije prikljucio u trku, na
zadnjem mestu... Kad sam poceo da se radujem novoj pobedi Vassera, Gugelmin
ga je slupao... Vasser je ipak uspeo da nastavi sa zadnje pozicije...
I tako dolazimo do neverovatne pobede SCOTTA PRUETTA !! Bio je sve vreme veoma
brz na stazi i dobro je vozio, ali je ipak imao dosta srece, sto su se slupali
Zanardi, Trejsi, Vasser, Gugelmin... Drugi je bio Greg Moore, treci Andretti.
Cetvrto mesto je osvojio, verovali ili ne, ALEX ZANARDI ! Sa zadnje pozicije
uspeo je da se dokopa cetvrtog mesta. Jos da dodam da je i Vasser uspeo da
se dokopa poena, bio je 12. sto znaci da je uzeo 1 poen. Sve u svemu, dobra
trka i sa nestrpljenjem se ocekuje trka sledece nedelje, mislim da je u pitanju
Long Beach...

U PPG Cart (IndyCar) sampionatu vazi (barem do sad) bas obrnuta situacija.
Goodyear gume su bolje od Firestone (Bridgestone) guma na kisi. Svako ko je
pratio IndyCar prosle godine sigurno se seca trke u Detroitu. Naravno,
staza je bila potpuno mokra (doduse, pri kraju trke se osusila ;) a bolidi
sa Goodyear gumama su bili bolje plasirani od onih sa Firestone gumama.
Uzmimo za primer Blundella koji je krenuo sa, cini mi se, 15 mesta a zavrsio
peti. To je odlican rezultat. Naravno, svi znaju da u PPG Cart sampionatu
razlika izmedju bolida nije na tolikom nivou kolikom je u F1. Cak stavise,
bolidi su poprilicno ujednaceni za razliku od F1 gde Williams Renault bolidi
(namerno nisam rekao vozaci ;) postizu rezultate za .500 sekundi bolje od
ostalih.
U ovoj zadnjoj trci PPG Cart sampionata u Australiji (Surfers Paradise)
Paul Tracy (na Goodyear gumama) je cak na suvom bio bolji od Zanardija
(na Firestone gumama) ali ga je ovaj jednim "pohlepnickim" zaokretom lako
izbacio iz trke ... da li to znaci da se Goodyear popravlja ili sta ? :)

Međutim kao što veca reče zanimljivo je da je Benetton skroz zakazao, kao i
to da je Panis treći ispred Šumia i Barrichella.
Hakkinen 17 valjda, a Coulthard jedva medju prvih deset.

Head Defends Frentzen
Patrick Head has defended Frentzen's performance saying that Hill took 11
races to win in a Williams, Coulthard took 21 and Villeneuve took 4. Head
neatly omits the fact that Damon Hill was driving with Alain Prost as team
mate and always finished in the top four.
Head's point is valid though, Frentzen is still in a new team with a new
car, we can judge him after Spain.
Stewart Mods
The aerodynamic modifications that Barrichello had for Brazil will be
available to Magnussen for the Argentine GP. They also hope to have fixed
the software bug which caused Barrichello's engine to shut itself down
after revving to 16,000 rpm.
Ton Up For Jordan
This weekend sees Jordan's 100th GP. Yet to record a victory the team look
as good as they ever have done. Fisichella and Schumacher are both new to
the car so the results will undoubtedly get better as the season progresses.
Argentine GP Times
The qualifying session for the GP starts at 16:00 GMT on Saturday and the
race is at 16:00 GMT on Sunday.
Those of you in the UK, please remember that BST (British Summer Time) is
GMT + 1.
Argentine GP Preview
The track is twisty and bumpy and for the last two years the race has been
won by Damon Hill. Hill is unlikely to win this weekend but the circuit
closes up the pack so you never know.
The weather will play a big part in the result, if it is wet then Panis and
Hill have the chance to show us just how good the wet weather Bridgestone
tyres are.
Benetton and in particular Gerhard Berger must be in with a good chance of
a win but the pre race favourite must be Jacques.
Surely this time he must be able to get away from the line cleanly ?.
Ferrari Look To Imola
Ferrari should debut their new step2 engine at Imola along with other
modifications that will increase the performance of the car.
Tyrrell / Bridgestone
Tyrrell have been linked with Bridgestone tyres. The team currently use
Goodyear tyres and a Goodyear spokesman has said that the contracts that
Goodyear teams signed have no room for manoeuvre. The earliest any team
could swap to Bridgestone would be at the end of this season.
Though that didn't stop Arrows testing the Bridgestones last year.
Renault Engine Rumours
There are rumours that other teams are interested in getting hold of
Mecachrome and more specifically that a deal has been signed with a second
team.
Arrows have been linked to Mecachrome, though the engine supplier denies
any deals. The Mecachrome F1 program boss Jean Yves Houe said that all
plans were confidential and any announcements would be made after Monaco.
The Arrows team need to know which engine they will be using next year so
that they can start on the chassis design for the new car.
Schu Plays Down Chances
Michael Schumacher has said that he can't see himself winning in Argentina,
admitting that Jacques Villeneuve is the man to beat.
Lola Hoping To Return At San Marino
Lola are hoping that they can overcome their financial hiccup and get back
to racing in this season's championship from Imola. The return all hinges
on the current finance negotiations that the team are undertaking.
Schumacher Breaks Mugello Record
Michael Schumacher has broken the Mugello track record (again). Using the
new step 2 engine he completed over 450Km of testing with a best time of
1.25.25 despite being in race trim.
Irvine Gets Vote of Confidence
Luck Eddie Irvine has been given a vote of confidence from the Ferrari
management. In the UK when a football manager gets a similar vote from his
club he is usually sacked within days.
Let's hope the Italians have a different interpretation of a vote of
confidence :-)
Formula 1 A-Z "P" Part 2
P is for.............
Pironi
Didier Pironi's F1 career was cut short by a terrible accident at
Hockenheim which almost cost him his legs.
His career started with the Tyrrell team in 1978 and in his second race he
scored his first points. He managed a total of five points finishes that
year marking him out as a driver with above average ability.
1979 saw Pironi gain his first podium finishes when he came third in
Belgium and at Watkins Glen, points from three other races helped him to
10th place in the championship standings with 14 points.
The Ligier team was his next stop and the Ligier JS11/15 Cosworth would
give him his first GP win (Zolder). He finished 8 races for Ligier, always
in the points and more often than not on the podium too. He scored 32
points which put him fifth in the championship.
The red car came calling in 1981 and Pironi found himself teamed up with
Gilles Villeneuve. His season got off to a poor start with three
retirements and though he managed to score points in a few races 1981 was
not his best season.
1982 was to be his final year in F1. It started badly with a poor first
race which saw him finish 18th, six laps behind. The next race saw him
finish eighth and get promoted to sixth when the first two drivers were
disqualified (Piquet-Brabham Ford, Rosberg-Williams Ford, both cars
underweight at finish).
At Long Beach he hit a wall and went out and then at Imola he overtook his
team mate on the last lap (something that caused huge friction between
them).
The next race (Zolder) saw his team mate killed, and Pironi did not race.
At Monaco he finished second, followed by a third place at Detroit.
Zandvoort saw him win his third GP and in Britain and France he finished on
the podium.
Then came the German GP, during a rain soaked practice session he was
unsighted and ran into the back of Alain Prost's Renault almost destroying
his legs. His season was over, he led the championship but there were five
races left and Keke Rosberg managed to score enough points to claim the
title.
Didier wanted to race, but without any finesse in his foot control (a
result of his accident) he could not return to F1, instead he chose
powerboat racing.
On August 23 1987 he crashed off the Isle of Wight (UK) and was killed.
Prost
Alain Prost, only the fourth driver ever to retain the drivers championship
was also one of the greatest F1 drivers.
It could have been very different, such were his skills with the ball he
could have become a professional footballer. It was an early karting World
championship win which made him pursue a career behind the wheel.
His first season was 1980 were he debuted at McLaren. The Woking team were
in a transitional stage and the car was nowhere near the pace of the
Williams (sounds familiar) nor could it match the Brabham, Ligier or
Renault machines. Despite this Alain managed to score points in his first
two races, two more points scores later in the season was not a bad result.
For the next ten years Alain would win races in every season.
A chance to join Renault in 1981 was a brilliant opportunity and one which
he did not pass up. The RE22B gave him his first podium finish when he came
third in Argentina. The RE30 was a much better car and allowed him to win
in France, Holland and Italy as well as gaining two second place finishes.
Alain finished fifth in the championship just seven points behind the
winner.
A second season with Renault and a brilliant start, two wins from two races
and it looked like Alain might be able to mount a serious attempt on the
drivers title. Sadly the rest of the season was dogged by engine failures
and fuel injection problems. Though he still managed to finish fourth in
the championship.
1983 was his last year with Renault, the new RE40 was much more reliable
than his car the year before and he retired only three times. Four wins
(France, Belgium, Britain and Austria) along with three other podium
finishes left him two points ahead going into the last race of the season
at Kyalami. A blown turbo forced him to retire. Nelson Piquet who had lead
the race from the start finally finished third and took the title. The
French press and Renault decided that Alain was at fault for not winning
the title and after much criticism he upped sticks and moved back to
McLaren who must have thought it was Christmas!
By 1984 McLaren were up with the front runners and Alain Prost and his new
team mate Niki Lauda won 12 of the races. Alain actually won seven to
Lauda's five but retirements in Belgium, Dallas, Britain and Italy cost him
the title by 0.5 points. The closest ever title race.
After coming so close in the previous two seasons Alain was determined to
succeed. In 1985 he won five races but finished second twice and third in
four other races. This consistency far out classed his team mate who only
finished three races. Alain won his first World championship by 20 points.
In 1986 Alain became the fourth driver (Ascari, Fangio and Brabham) to
retain the drivers championship. The season was a close battle between the
two Williams drivers (Mansell and Piquet) and Alain. Wins in San Marino,
Monaco and Austria helped him on his way and second place finishes in
Portugal and Mexico ensured that he was still in touch going into the final
race. Mansell had 70 points and Piquet and Prost were tied on 63. In
reality Mansell only needed to finish fourth to claim his first world
title. As the race came to a close Mansell suffered a 180 Mph puncture and
went out, Piquet who was then leading was called into the pits by Williams
for a precautionary tyre change and Prost sailed through into the lead to
take his second title by two points.
1987 saw Williams strengthen their position and again it was Mansell and
Piquet fighting for the title. Alain started off well enough with a win in
Brazil and Belgium but a series of retirements and low points scores left
him out of contention. He did manage one more win in Portugal and a second
in Spain, but scoring no points in the last three races left him fourth in
the championship.
1988 saw McLaren get Honda power and Ayrton Senna, the team swept all
before them winning fifteen of the sixteen races and setting a constructors
championship record of 199 points. They would have won all sixteen had it
not been for Jean Louis Schlesser. Schlesser was standing in for an ill
Nigel Mansell and collided with Senna while he was being lapped two laps
from the end of the race taking Senna out in the process. The MP4/4 Honda
was truly an outstanding car and McLaren had two of the best drivers ever
to sit in a Formula1 car. The early season belonged to Alain, wins in
Brazil, Monaco and Mexico put him into the lead a further win in France
helped him stay clear of the pack but his team mate was catching. Alain won
three more times, in Portugal, Spain and Australia. The title however went
to Ayrton Senna by three points. In 1988 the best 11 results counted and 7
wins and 7 second places were not enough. Although Prost actually scored
more points 105 to Senna's 94.
By 1989 Prost and Senna's relationship had started to deteriorate, Alain
got down to the business of racing though and put together a string of wins
and podium finishes which left him ahead by 16 points going into the last
two races. That infamous 47th lap collision with Senna at Suzuka which put
him out and led to Senna's disqualification ended the title race. At the
next race in Australia the now three time world champion refused to start
due to the appalling rain.
1990 saw Alain move to Ferrari, the Italian marques best season of late.
Alain won five times and six other points finishes left him going into the
last two races with a chance of retaining his title again. In an almost
carbon copy of the 1989 Japanese race Ayrton Senna ran Prost off the road
and put both drivers out. This gave the title to Senna with a 13 point lead
going into the last race.
1991 was the second year of his career when Alain failed to win a race, the
Ferrari struggled to be really competitive and neither Alain nor his new
team mate Jean Alesi could win in it. Alain came closest in the French GP
when he was just 5 seconds behind the race winner, further second place
finishes in the US and Spain helped him into fifth place in the drivers
championship. Alain was fired by Ferrari for his outspoken views on the
capabilities of the Ferrari 643 and his place at the last race was taken by
Gianni Morbidelli.
Disillusioned with F1 he decided not to race in 1992 and instead looked at
the options open to him. A deal with Williams for 1993 meant he would
return to partner his one time Ferrari team mate Nigel Mansell.
1993 came without Mansell, instead his team mate would be the test driver
Damon Hill. Between them they would win ten of the sixteen races, Prost
winning seven. Five other podium finishes allowed him to win his fourth
title by 26 points. Williams signed Senna for 1994 and Prost handed in his
resignation. The two drivers were hardly the best of friends and after
winning your fourth title it is easier to quit and avoid aggravation.
When people look at Prost they always get the impression that he never
really tried, his driving was so smooth and deceptively quick, rarely
mounting kerbs or sliding through corners. You just need a quick glance at
how many times he set the fastest lap of a race. 41, shows just how quick
he was, his nearest rival Mansell only managed 30.
Alain tops the drivers tables for the most wins with 51, for most fastest
laps with 41 and the most points scored with 768.5. He is also joint second
with Jim Clark on the pole positions table with 33.
Alain is now team principal of the Prost Mugen Honda team.
Pryce
Tom Pryce is another of the fallen heroes that died before he could really
achieve F1 greatness.
He started his F1 days in 1974 at the wheel of a Token (1 race), and then
moved to Shadow, he only managed to finish four times and only scored one
point but he did manage to qualify a less than brilliant car in third place.
1975 started in much the same way but things improved from Belgium when he
finished sixth. Four more points finishes, including one on the podium
helped him to 10th in the championship. He even scored his first pole
position at Silverstone.
1976 was a better year, the car finished all but three races, however it
was not as competitive and from 12 finishes he only managed 3 points
scoring drives.
Many drivers would have left Shadow, but Tom stayed on. The 1977 season
however was to prove no better. He finished the first race 8 laps down and
then in Brazil his engine seized.
It got worse, Shadow team mate Renzo Zorzi's engine failed, as he pulled
over and got out of his car the engine caught fire. Renzo returned to the
car and activated the extinguisher which put the fire out. However, two
over eager marshals decided that they would assist, they attempted to run
across the track carrying fire extinguishers just beyond a blind brow.
Sadly at the same time Tom Pryce and Hans Stuck came over the hill side by
side. Tom hit one of the marshals, killing him instantly, and the fire
extinguisher hit Tom on the head killing him instantly too. Tom's car
carried on down the hill to the first bend where it slammed into the Ligier
of Jacques Laffite. Laffite was uninjured.
Purley
If you look up David Purley in the record books you will see that he
started 7 GPs, never won, never qualified higher than 19th, never set a
fastest lap and didn't score any points.
A pretty unremarkable F1 career which was ended with a terrible practice
accident at the 1977 British GP which took him ages to recover from.
What David Purley is most remembered for is the events at the 1973 Dutch
GP. Roger Williamson's STP March had hit a barrier after tyre/suspension
failure, and the barrier had launched the car across the track where it
came to rest upside down and on fire. Williamson was trapped. The nearby
fire tender was down the track and not allowed to drive against the flow of
traffic to extinguish the fire. The marshals on the scene were either
unsure what to do or unwilling to approach the burning car.
As Purley came upon the scene he stopped and attempted (single handedly) to
right the overturned car. He then grabbed an extinguisher from a marshal
and tried to put the fire out. He returned to the car again and again but
it was all in vain. Williamson burned to death (live on TV, in front of
millions of viewers) while the marshals looked on in horror.
David Purley was awarded the George Medal for his attempts at saving
Williamson (I think this is second only to the Victoria Cross, unless the
George medal is the civilian equivalent) one of the highest bravery honours
that the UK government can award.
Paul Ricard
The Paul Ricard circuit has fantastic facilities and a mile long main
straight (Mistral) that leads into a fast right hander. The circuit is
3.610 miles long, though the F1 variant was shortened to 2.369 miles long
after the death of Elio de Angelis in 1986.
Nigel Mansell holds the lap record (1.04.402 - 132.425mph) which he set in
his Ferrari in 1990.
The circuit hosted the French GP 14 times between 1971 and 1990 before it
moved to Magny Cours.
Pedrables
Some circuits have competition for the national GP from tracks in their
home country. Pedrables has competition from tracks in and around the same
city. Like Catalunya and Montjuich Park, Pedrables is in Barcelona (OK so
Catalunya is 20 miles outside the city, but it is still classed as
Barcelona).
Host of the Spanish GP for the first two occasions (1951 and 1954) the
3.925 mile long circuit was closed in 1955.
Juan Manuel Fangio holds the lap record for the full 1951 circuit, while
Alberto Ascari holds the lap record for the longer 3.936 mile variant used
in 1954.
Pescara
In 1957 the "Pescara GP" made its one and only appearance as part of the
world championship after the cancellation of the Belgian, Dutch and Spanish
GPs.
Pescara is the longest circuit to have been used in the world championship,
16.032 miles long with two four mile long straights. The course also
featured level crossings and a twisting uphill section that went through
many villages.
The race was won by Sterling Moss.
Phoenix
Phoenix held the US GP three times, twice won by Ayrton Senna and once by
Alain Prost.
The track was a street circuit and never really proved a hit with the
public, the US GP was dropped after the 1991 race.

Neizvesna trka, puno ispadanja i incidenata od samog starta. Uglavnom ovo
govori da će sezona ipak biti jaaako zanimljiva.

Panis je jako vozio dok nije odustao zbog nekog kvara. Vileneuve u
završnici umalo nije ostao bez pobede (Irvine na "braniku" ;) ali
ostaje da vidimo da li je Williams imao tehničkih problema. Pohvale
za Hakkinena koji se još u početku jako uspešno probio tako da je
5. mesto priličan uspeh. Alezi je vozio kao poslednji amater, izgleda
da ima kompleks da pretekne Hila ;) pa je umalo odustao posle dva
incidenta pri preticanju. Šta još reći sem je*em ti državu u kojoj
ne možeš da gledaš prenos Formule 1... :(((

Huh ... barem danasnji dan nije propao. :)
Danas oko 5:00 na Eurosportu se mogao gledati direktan prenos iz Malezije
(motorcycling grand prix) gde je Max Biaggi nastavio da dominira u klasi od
250cc iako je promenio tim. Prvi u klasi od 125cc bio je Valentino Rossi, a
u klasi od 500cc Michael Doohan ispred svog timskog kolege A.Criville-a!
Na Eurosportu se danas oko 22:00 moze pratiti direktan prenos trece trke
PPG C˙A˙R˙T sampionata. Naravno, u pitanju je Long Beach, a pol poziciju
je osvojio, cini mi se, Gil De Ferran, tako da ce najverovatnije biti dosta
dobra trka (kao i uvek, inace ;).
Kao sto neko rece (baker?), dominacija Williams Renault bolida postaje
dosadna. Trka je stvarno bila jedna od najgorih. Odavno tako losu trku
nisam gledao. 10 bolida je zavrsilo trku. Berger na sestoj, a Alesi na
sedmoj poziciji :(. Villeneuve, naravno :(, dominirao tokom citave trke.
Jedno vreme (pred sam kraj) se cinilo da Irvine ima sanse da ga obidje
do kraja trke, medjutim, nista od toga :(. Od starijeg Sumahera nista.
Ispao je u prvom krugu zbog sudaranja sa Baricelom, koji je trku nastavio.
Takodje nisam mogao da verujem kada sam video da Panis odustaje. Panis
je verovatno isao na 1 pitstop tako da bi imao odlicne sanse da pobedi
danas, opet, da mu se nije desilo to sto mu se desilo. ;)
Sve u svemu ... zacin C! :))

Mislim, pojavi se jedan, drugi nestane ... potom ovaj drugi
"uleti" na sesto ili sedmo mesto, ovaj prvi valjda ode u
boks. Na kraju, jedan ispred drugog ... pa onda, obratno ;))
Definitivno, dream team ... da nema pomenutog dvojca, F1 bi
izgubila veliki deo humora koji sada poseduje.

Pa sad, dominirao je među onima koji su ostali u trci. Bilo bi
zanimljivo videti rasplet da su u igri ostali matori Šumaher,
Frentzen a bogami i Panis koji ga je pratio na početku ali je
ostalo nejasno na koju bi taktiku išao, šteta što odustade... :(

Da, ono je bila idealna prilika za obilazak, bolju poziciju ne može
da zamisli - jednom mu se našao metar iza u repu na pravcu odmah posle
krivine. Al' šta je tu je... :)

Pa šta je mogao da uradi kad nije ni učestovao u trci... Čak mi dođe i
žao što nije završio ;)

Williams-Renault nije bio tako nadmoćan nad ostalim učesnicima trke kao
što je to do sada bio slučaj. Žak Vilnev je morao dobro da se potrudi da
bi ostao na prvoj poziciji nakon što ga je Edi Irvajn stavio na muke u
poslednjim minutima trke. Olivije Pani je još jednom pokazao potencijale
Prost-Mugen bolida prateći vodećeg Vilneva na početku trke.
Ralf Šumaher je želeo samo da završi trku a uspeo je da se popne na
podijum, završivši treći uz pomoć Pežoovog motora koji je pokazivao
znake umora u poslednjim krugovima.
Zanimljivosti:
* McLaren je potpisao ugovor o sponzorstvu sa Mastercard-om
* Schumacher je ispao iz trke u prvoj krivini kada je udario u Baričela.
Baričelo je nastavio trku ali je oštetio vrh bolida. Kultard je takođe
ostao van trke jer ga je neko udario i otkinuo mu zadnji točak. On je
to prokomentarisao ovako: "Očekivao sam nešto u prvoj krivini ali ne
baš ovo."
* Frentzen je parkirao svoj Williams kraj staze zbog tehničkih problema
(coupling problem - ko zna nek prevede, mrzi me da tražim rečnik ;)
* Alesi je prilikom preticanja prerano zatvorio Hila i oba vozača su
se okrenula na stazi ali nastavila trku
* Panis je odustao zbog tehničkih problema u 18. krugu
* Ralf Schumacher pokušava nemoguć manevar protiv svog timskog kolege
Fizikele i izbacuje ga iz trke. Baričelo odustaje u istom krugu
* Larini ima velikih problema u pitu pošto cev za uvod goriva ne može
da se pričvrsti na otvor rezervoara
* Hill odustaje zbog otkaza motora u 33. krugu
* Katayama spinuje na ulasku u krivinu u 37. krugu dok Nakano izleće van
staze u pokušaju da izbegne sudar
* Pritisak goriva naglo opada u Ferštapenovom Tirelu usled čega Holanđanin
odustaje od dalje trke
* Nakano odustaje zbog problema sa bolidom
* Diniz spaljuje Yamahin motor u 50. krugu
* Larini parkira svoj bolid na kraju pitlejna u 63. krugu
* Magnussenov Ford eksplodira u 66. krugu

Panis ove godine mnooogo dobro vozi... Jedini koji je uspeo da uspesno
prati Vilneva. Sta da kazem... Honda je ipak neprikosnovena sto se tice
motora... Ali dobitna kombinacija je tu ustvari Prost-Honda... Jos da
imaju vozaca kao sto je Senna bio koji bi znao da potera bolid...
Veselo bi bilo... ;)

Upravo videh da je Žak Vilnev je u toku trke imao izvesnih problema sa
digestivnim traktom ;), što objašnjava onu prilično neubedljivu vožnju
u završnici ("naivna je muka svaka pored muke od stomaka..." ;)
Dakle, ko je pomislio da je video "sumrak Williamsa" - malo se zaje*ao :)

Meni je bila losa. Da li je to zbog ubedljivo najgore staze koju covek
moze da zamisli ;) ili zbog neceg drugog (ispadanje Sumahera ;), pojma
nemam. ;)

Pretpostavljam da su svi veoma ushićeni zbog tvojih rekorda ali
preporučujem da se ubuduće ovakve stvari šalju u odgovarajuću konferenciju
(mcule i njegova konferencija IGRE prosto vape za ovakim prilozima ;)
