goriva zbog nedostatka istog.

F1: Monaco GP winners' press conference
Q. Congratulations, Michael, on making the race look
so easy today. Was it as straightforward as it
looked?
MS: Except on one occasion [when I went straight on at
Ste Devote], that was true: I had a good run from
the beginning on. We chose the right tyres, the
right setup, the right time to pit stop. Everything
was just perfect. There was a very important
decision just before we went out to the grid, when
we changed some details -- which finally worked.
Q. What happened in the incident at Ste Devote when
you went straight on with about ten laps to go?
MS: It was a struggle anyway to keep things together at
Ste Devote, because I was locking up the front
tyres. I could probably have made the corner, but
instead I decided to go straight on and have a
little spin, to enjoy myself, and then continue.
Q. Was there any question in your mind about possibly
using dry tyres, as some of the other drivers
decided to do?
MS: I thought about it, too, but I didn't see the
conditions changing and I didn't know other people
were making the change. In fact I was quite
surprised that anyone should make that decision. It
could have been right and it could have been wrong.
Q. What are your feelings about the next race on the
schedule, in Spain?
MS: To be honest, I would prefer to cancel Spain
because it is not a circuit which suits our car!
Now that I have opened out a small gap, I suppose I
can afford just to go for a finish in the points
and still look good. After that race, though, I
believe we will be looking reasonably good for the
rest of the season. But Spain will definitely be
tough, so I just have to do my best.
Q. Rubens, this is the first-ever race finish for
Stewart Grand Prix and your first podium since
Canada in 1995. Are you surprised to be here?
RB: I suppose I am surprised, to be honest. But I am
glad for this great team. They did a great job,
they put everything together, and the car is very
good. The wet gave us our best chance to be on the
podium. At one stage when I was 2nd I saw that I
was 28 seconds behind Michael, I could hardly
believe it. For the last two laps I thought, 'Jeez,
I don't know how to drive anymore,' because I was
concentrating so hard and I was so determined
to bring the car home. It was quite tough.
Q. Your team boss Jackie Stewart won here three times.
What advice did he give you?
RB: He kept telling me that the white lines were
dangerous! This is a great moment for me. We
haven't done too much testing There have been
reliability problems, too, and until today we had
no idea whether we could finish. It is great to see
the other car finishing as well. It was hard to
keep my concentration in the final minutes, too,
when we didn't know how many minutes of racing were
left.
Q. You had a good fight with the Jordans at the
beginning. What happened there?
RB: My tyres were working very well at the beginning
and they [Jordan] were having trouble at one stage,
because I passed Fisichella going down to the
chicane. Then Ralf ran wide, at Portier I think,
and I overtook him. But it was a fair battle. At
one stage I was trying to get close to Michael. But
the gap [between us] wasn't going down and then I
made a mistake and at the chicane and ran straight
on. After that my car was touching the ground a bit
harder, so I decided to keep on going because the
gap to Fisichella was increasing at one second a
lap.
Q. Eddie, after qualifying so far back, you must be
very happy to have come through to score a third
consecutive podium finish ...
EI: Oh, yes. It was unexpected, but I got a reasonably
good start and picked up two or three places. After
that there were people running wide, so I was able
to nip through. Everything was running pretty much
to plan. At one stage I was close behind Rubens,
and there was a possibility of finishing the race
without putting fuel in, so we were wondering
whether we should go for 2nd place. But we decided
to settle for 3rd. So I came in to put in a little
fuel and off I went again.
Q. How bad were the driving conditions?
EI: The biggest problem for me today was that the idle
[speed of the engine] had been set too high to get
around Loews. Almost every lap I had to pull the
clutch in and coast round the corner, then let the
clutch out again. A couple of times the engine was
pushing me on and I didn't think I was going to
make it round the corner. That was really the only
worry I had all race.
Q. Those early laps must have been lively for you ...
EI: Oh, it was chaotic! I was hitting people up the
rear, I was being hit from the rear and even from
the side. The Ferrari must be a very strong car,
but it survived all that. God knows how many
contacts I was getting in the first five or six
laps. But we came through it and climbed up through
the field from 15th place.

dođe i Michelin, biće GoodYear-u prpa.

Formula One Inc.
Monday May 19, 1997
An article by Frank Kane and Rupert Steiner in The Sunday Times
reported that Bernie Ecclestone has plans to bring Formula One to the
stock market in time for the British Grand Prix with a price tag
between 1.5 to 2 billion pounds.
The procedure for making Formula One public is being handled by
Salomon Brothers, a U.S. investment banking firm. One stockbroker was
quoted as saying, "it's on a very tight timetable." A confidential
meeting was held last week and final arrangements were being settled
and a announcement could be made within days regarding the new
organization. Salomon Brothers recently gave the first detailed
financial forecasts for Ecclestone and his new company, Formula One
Holdings. Turnover for this year is estimated at ú200 million, giving
a pre-tax profit of ú85 million.
Reportedly, there are several changes in place since the first
announcement on flotation. 50% of the shares will go public. Formula
One Holdings will receive 30% of shares. The rest of the shares will
be divided up between teams and track operators.
In a major move, Formula One Holdings has lured Helmut Werner, former
head of Mercedes-Benz, as chairman. Ecclestone will be chief
executive. Other appointments include Marco Piccinini (sporting
director of Ferrari) as deputy chief executive and David Wilson
(formerly of Ladbroke) as finance director. Robert Rowley (Reuters'
financial director) and Walter Thoma (European head of Philip Morris)
are also included at Formula One Holdings as non-executive directors.
In The Sunday Times article, Ecclestone was quoted saying, "It's all
progressing nicely and we should have an announcement within the
month. I've been going through thousands of meetings with City
(London's term for its "Wall Street") people and have come away
thinking: 'don't float unless you want to get aggravated.' ...We are
restructuring the way business will be run, away from its
entrepreneurial basis towards a more transparent business."
Previously, the workings for going public were stalled when Formula
One teams were disputing the revised Concorde Agreement. Ecclestone
stated, "there is no problem with the teams as we have resolved the
dispute and got them united -- it was just some people with large
egos. We are negotiating for the teams and promoters to be
shareholders." Ecclestone also plans to expand Formula One to Korea
and Malaysia next year with China to join later. With these moves,
Ecclestone hopes to encourage more drivers from Asia in boosting
sponsorship and viewership in those areas.
Ecclestone also is planning the expansion of Formula One Promotions
which will include an ambitious merchandising program. He believes the
brand value of the Formula One name can generate a theme of
restaurants, not unlike the Hard Rock Cafe. "We have been forming a
base to expand the merchandising and develop the brand. ...We have
also managed to expand our core business -- The number of Grands Prix
staged around the world. I have been saying we should 'move east young
man', and we are going to be in China, and next year Korea and
Malaysia. Things are going nicely for an impending announcement."
The valuation of Formula One Holdings will eventually depend on the
pay-per-view scheme for the sport. This would include viewers to
switch between in-car cameras much like DF1 (Digital Formula One)
subscribers in Germany are privy to. Major flotation of Formula One
will exist in London and Frankfurt as the chief markets. Consideration
for a Wall Street listing is also being given.
During the Grand Prix of Monaco, British fund managers were courted by
Formula One when City experts were flown out as Ecclestone's guests. A
similar arrangement will occur for this Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.

Fenomenalna trka.
trojicu, Carpentiera, Zanardija i De Ferrana. Prosto neverovatno. :)

stara narodna poslovica - HONDA ruleZ!
Još kad bi Prost šutnuo "Š" Nakano-a i doveo nekog dobrog vozača...

let's wait and see". Ja tipujem na Zanardija (iako Reynard/Honda/F vise
nije najjaca kombinacija ;).

Spanish Grand Prix report:
The drama began with Berger stalling at the start of the parade lap. He
got going, and looked set to rejoin the grid in last place, however Ralf
Schumacher managed to stall on the grid and caused the start to be
aborted. Berger was therefore allowed back in his place, and Ralf would
go to the back. Except due to an error he wasn't held back on the new
parade lap, and so was held back after giving him a radio signal.
The drama continued at the new start with Villeneuve away well, but
Coulthard did it better and charged up the inside (with Michael
Schumacher also doing the same) and almost managing to take the lead at
the first corner. That Coulthard didn't quite do it was more amazing
than the fact he was even in a position to try! It unsettled Coulthard,
allowing Schumacher to take second. Frentzen was already falling back,
and was in an uninspiring 6th place. Ahead of him was Alesi and
Hakkinen. Coulthard continued to battle with Schumacher, and it was
clear that the Germans car was somewhat slower than the McLaren (4
clicks on the main straight). After a long time of absence from Grand
Prix racing Morbidelli (replacing Larini) had jumped the start and so
was pit bound for a stop/go penalty.
After a few laps trying to get past Schumacher the McLaren edged closer
and closer, and made its move on the main straight, Coulthard took
advantage of his straightline speed advantage and got by Schumacher by
the corner at the end of the straight. Coulthard could now charge after
Villeneuve. Or that was what was expected, but the McLaren team had
other ideas, and Coulthard was soon pit bound for his first pit stop.
Schumacher followed into the pits, and so it was a race of mechanics.
The McLaren team won the race, but a nasty collision between Schumacher,
Alesi and Coulthard was only narrowly avoided. Hakkinen soon pitted
also. The Arrows of Damon Hill now found itself up in the points, but
that was as far as it went, with the Arrows pulling off by the pit wall
with a blown engine - 0/6 for the Hill-Arrows combination this year. On
the way back to Arrows, Hill took the most direct route - straight
through the Williams pit. Apparantly Hill gave a wink as he walked past
Frank. Frank didn't acknowledge him and continued to stare at the pit
monitor. By the end of 21 most of the first round of stops had been
completed, and Villeneuve found himself with 3.7 seconds over Coulthard,
with Panis, Hakkinen, Alesi and Schumacher behind. Frentzen, meanwhile,
was languishing in an undistinguished 9th place - his Williams shredding
tyres like there was no tommorow.
On lap 26 Panis pitted, and was the last person to do so for the first
round. Williams were also ready for a second stop for Frentzen.
Remember, this was lap 26 of 64, and already two stops were needed.
Frentzens tyres were covered in massive blisters. Schumacher and Alesi
were having a fight, and also managed to get past Hakkinen in the
process. Hakkinen pitted for new tyres, his teammate Coulthard likewise
soon pitted. The Goodyears were not having a good day. The pit stops
continued with most of the front Goodyear runners needing to stop. On
lap 33, Trulli came in for a new nose - a major difference to the other
teams pit work.
Salo also was having problems with his tyres. His were not blistering
but blowing, with the left rear tyre shredding itself. Panis was now
running in 4th place, and was all over the McLaren of Coulthard. He
outbreaked the Englishman at the end of the pit straight and into third.
Panis looked the major threat to the Williams. Frentzen was pit bound
again to shed another set of blistered Goodyears. Coulthard also stopped
for his third stop in 40 laps. Berger also pitted. Villeneuve also
pitted, but only for his second stop. His Williams was in a different
class to Frentzens. On lap 45 the order was Schumacher, Villeneuve,
Panis, Alesi, Herbert and Coulthard. This was rectified on the next lap
as Schumacher pitted to drop the German to 4th. Panis was now a real
challenge to the Williams, running a good second a lap faster, and then
Panis started taking 1.3 second chunks out. It looked like we might just
get a race.
Traffic soon put paid to that idea, with Panis stuck, but now Alesi was
in pursuit. Panis was stuck behind Ralf Schumacher for what seemed
forever. Finally he got by, only to be caught in traffic again - scratch
that bright idea. Alesi was now on Panis' tail, as they were stuck
behind the Ferrari of Irvine. It was a total coincidence that Schumacher
was charging after Alesi...... Finally after a long time Panis got
through, as did Alesi. Schumacher had no problem getting past his team
mate. A few laps later it was Schumachers turn to be stuck behind
someone - Jos Verstappen. Irvine received a ten second stop-go penalty
for blocking. Justice was done, though too late as it robbed us of a
chance of a battle for the lead. And so Villeneuve continued to take the
win, never really bothered, in a race where others couldn't make their
rubber last, yet Villeneuve and the Bridgestone runners could make it
last as long as they wanted.

Villeneuve hotest
-----------------
Jacques Villeneuve was fastest in today's Warm Up session for the
Spanish Grand Prix. Ralf Schumacher was second fastest followed by Mika
Hakkinen.
The weather was grey and overcast for the session this morning. It has
not actually rained yet, but everyone expects it soon. In the 30
minutes session Villeneuve ran 12 laps and was the only one under 1m
20s. Most other drivers ran between 14 and 18 laps except Verstappen who
only completed 5.
The Minardi of Trulli suffered a mechanical problem and retired on
track. The two Ferraris are still looking unhappy and were 10th and
14th fastest.
After the qualifying session yesterday many drivers talked about their
ups and downs. Jacques Villeneuve was very happy to have taken his 8th
F1 pole. Frentzen was not happy and felt that his third set of tyres and
some aerodynamic problems had upset his last fast laps.
Michael Schumacher said that his car felt well balanced and improved
since their test sessions, but still had many aerodynamic problems on
this track. 7th is his worst starting position since joining Ferrari.
Eddie Irvine said his problems had gone from oversteer in the morning to
understeer in the afternoon!
Both Panis and Diniz were critical of the Bridgestone tyres and just
about everyone was worried about tyre wear at this circuit. Mika Salo
was relieved with his 14th spot on the grid, having spent 35 minutes of
the qualifying sitting in the garage with accelerator problems.
Verstappen ran the entire qualifying in the spare car because of
problems fitting the engine in his. Nakano felt he could have gone
another half second faster due to his knowledge of the track and the way
the car has improved - it just never came. Gerhard Berger pulled into
the pits to find part of someone's visor stuck in his tyre.
auto-moto.550obren,
Pregled jučerašnje trke...
The French Formula 1 community were all very happy today as the top 3
places in this afternoon's Spanish Grand Prix were taken by French
speaking drivers. Jacques Villeneuve took his third victory of the
season followed by Olivier Panis and Jean Alesi.
On a day when rain was expected but never appeared, the first incidents
of the day came before the start. First Gerhard Berger stalled at the
start of the Warm-Up lap and was all ready to start from the back of the
grid, when Ralf Schumacher stalled before the lights changed - start
halted. Gerhard was back in 6th place for the second warm up lap but
this time Ralf dropped back and began the race from the back of the
grid.
Brother Michael had no such problems, he jumped from 7th to 3rd before
the first corner. Coulthard lead into the corner closely followed by
Villeneuve. But not for long - a mistake let Jacques and Michael past
and so we were set for the first section of the race. Jacques continued
to pull away whilst a frustrated Coulthard lead Alesi and Hakkinen on
the tail of the slower Ferrari.
Coulthard dived past Schumacher at the end of the start straight on lap
13 and then began the mass exodus into the pits. Jacques meanwhile was
nearly 20s in front. 8 laps later the pits were quiet again (apart from
Hill banging his head on the wall - after retiring on lap 18) with all
the major players having passed through. Villeneuve lead, Coulthard
second and Michael Schumacher had dropped to 6th.
By lap 56 everyone had been through the pits again, a few drivers had
joined Damon, Mika Salo was in the gravel after a rear tyre exploded and
it had still not rained. Jacques was still in the lead (had even lapped
teammate Frentzen) followed 13s later by Panis, Alesi and M.Schumacher
in a tight group. The chasers came into traffic and the Ferrari of
Eddie Irvine (in 11th) caused some excitement as he seemed to block
those in front of his teammate. Finally everyone passed without incident,
apart from Irvine who received a 10s Stop-in-the-Pits penalty.
Villeneuve went on to win and Herbert crept past Coulthard in the last
few laps to take 5th place behind Michael and the two French drivers.

F1: Spanish GP winners' press conference
Q Congratulations, Jacques, on your third victory of the
season and on retrieving the lead of the drivers'
championship.
JV: It's a pleasing result because although the team has
worked very hard, with the speed we have there have been
too many races that we threw away. After the stupidity
of Monaco, it is especially good to have won here.
Barcelona is where we did almost all of our winter
testing, but when we came here for the race we had
different tyres and the car didn't feel as good as it
did during the winter. When the heat picked up in the
middle of the race it became very difficult. But being
in front, with Michael [Schumacher] in 2nd place and
blocking everyone else gave us a good help.
Q. You pitted twice rather than three times. Was that your
planned strategy?
JV: Yes, we were planning on two. We knew it was risky on
the tyres. We did three [pitstops] at one race so far
this year, and usually there is more chance of something
going wrong when you do three.
Q. Were you worried towards the end of the race, because
Panis seemed to be catching you?
JV: I was not worried, because we had a big gap and I knew
that there was no point in pushing because the tyres are
on the limit here. As soon as [Panis] went quicker, we
could keep up, so I wasn't really worried unless we had
some traffic or tyre problems. He did a great race
because he didn't start from the front and he finished
2nd. That was pretty impressive.
Q. Olivier, you must be satisfied with 2nd place,
especially after having to start from 12th place on the
grid.
OP: The qualifying here was difficult because the tyres we
had were too hard. The two stop strategy was just right
for me: in the warm-up we found we were getting
fantastically good tyre wear, and that made the
difference. I am very happy for the team, because they
gave us a very good performance today.
Q. Can you and the Prost team hope to improve your
qualifying performances in future?
OP: There are two solutions. If you are quick in qualifying,
the tyres may make things difficult for the race. But
the tyres are improving all the time and maybe we can
have better performance in qualifying. But the race is
still more important ...
Q. You are now 3rd in the championship. What are your hopes
for the rest of the season?
OP: I would like to finish in the first five of the drivers'
championship: that would be fantastic for he team and
also for me. It will still be very difficult to achieve,
but the car is very good and we will also have a new
engine for the French Grand Prix.
Q. Jean, this is your first podium appearance of the
season. What does it mean for you?
JA: Of course I am very happy. I can tell you that the
beginning of the season was a nightmare for us because
we did not [anticipate] what has been happening to us.
But we worked hard here and we managed to find a setup
which was good with both low fuel and full fuel. To
finish on the podium is great and it means a lot of
oxygen for everyone on the team.
Q. It was a hard race for you, too. Were you worried that
Michael Schumacher might catch you at the end?
JA: No, I was worried about Irvine because I know what a
strange driver he can be. Overtaking him was quite tough
-- much more difficult than having to hold Michael
behind me.
Q. Does this result mean that we can now expect better
results from Benetton?
JA: I would like to say that things are improving but I
think we should wait until the next Grand Prix before we
can say whether we are going the right way. I really
believe in the abilities of the technical staff and
probably we will have some very good new parts for the
coming races I am quite confident, really.
Q. Jacques, it was very close in the first corner after the
start between you and Coulthard. What happened?
JV: I didn't have a great start -- and the white line seemed
to be slippery. David was on the inside and I tried to
block him, but he didn't lift. Then I left him room
because there was no point in crashing there. I know he
is a tough fighter, so we went into turn 1 and I decided
where I was going to brake and got fixed on that. He
braked just a little bit earlier. When he saw that I was
braking later than him, he let the brakes go and we got
side by side into turn 1. After that, Michael
[Schumacher] managed to get in front of him and that
allowed me to pull away.
Q. You must have been delighted to see that gap open up by
huge amounts.
JV: Yes, I knew that Michael was going to have troubles
because in testing here he had a hard time to keep his
tyres [in one piece] for more than five laps. I knew
that after three or four laps in which he would be very
quick, he would just go very slowly and blister his
tyres.

pobednikom (Jacque). Zadnja recenica koju je izgovorio u interjvuu posle
trke glasila je otprilike ovako: "He's an asshole". Doduse, zadnju rec

Subj: CART World Series, rezultati trke (Detroit)

Timovi poput Vilijamsa, Džordana i Ferarija dobijaju ogromne fondove

situaciju u Ferariju. On inače nije zadovoljan trenutnim progresom tima
šampionsku titulu" (Posle mene - potop, prim. obren ;)
otprilike prava slika trenutnog stanja stvari."

suluda ideja!"

nekad vozač u šampionatu ITC, a trenutno test pilot Benetona, pošto

strane u neku ruku umanjuje atraktivnost Formule 1.
vremena...

Boullion i Emanuel Collard.

Ipak, sada me više zanima kako je
Olivije..."
i motor ugasio."
slomilo u bolidu..."
Verstappen: "Sramota!
Ipak,
rekao bih da sam zadovoljan jer tim zaista ide napred."
Hill: "Brine me kako će Panis proći.

Komentar trke u Montrealu...
A great win by Michael Schumacher was over shadowed by the horrific
accident of Olivier Panis.
On a flatout section Panis first slid then bounced off a wall, crossed
the track and was stopped dead by the tyre barrier. The nose of his
Prost was completely destoryed. The Saftey Car came out and soon after
the race was stopped, with only 56 of the 69 laps having been completed.
Olivier was later taken by helicopter to a local hospital.
No champagne was opened on the podium and the drivers' interview was
full of concern for Olivier.
The race started in glorious sunshine and an expectant Canadian crowd
watched as local favourite Jacques Villeneuve tucked in behind
Schumacher to take the first corner of the race. Further back in the
pack Irvine, Magnussen, Panis and Hakkinen suffered contact damage.
Irvine pulled off onto the grass with two of the others stopping soon
after. Only Panis made it back to the pits and out again. Meanwhile
Canada stopped as Villeneuve slid onto the start line in full lockup
mode, hit the wall and was out of the race.
Michael Schumacher was out in front followed by Fisichella, Alesi and
Coulthard. On lap 6 Katayama lost control and hit the walls. He was OK
but the car was left in a dangerous position and so the Saftey Car came
on track. Two laps later and the race was on again. Michael was once
again pulling away again, just as brother Ralph flew off the track at
the end of the Start Straight.
The first round of pits stops was ignored by Coulthard which put him
into a commanding 10s lead over Schumacher, Alesi and Fisichella. When
he did pit he came out second behind Schumacher. And then Schumacher
pitted again, after having been overtaked by Panis who was actually a
lap down. David was back in front - but not for long. Coulthard pitted
again probably due to tyre problems but stalled. Meanwhile the attention
was turned to the car of Olivier Panis.
Panis's car was positioned nose into the tyres on a very fast straight.
While marshalls removed him from the car the Safety Car made its second
appearance on track. David Coulthard finally made it back onto the
track but now it was just a parade for two laps before the red flags
came out and the race was stopped. Panis was carefully lifted into an
ambulance with suspected leg injuries as the race cars came to a stop on
the grid.
Another good solid performance by Schumacher and Ferrari, bad luck to
Coulthard who probably just missed his second win of the season, a fine
8th and 9th places for the Arrows, but everyone's thoughts tonight are
with Olivier Panis.

Evo još jednog izvještaja s trke...
F1: Canadian GP report
Schumacher got away well at the start and into the lead, with Villeneuve
following behind, and Fisichella 3rd. Irvine was already off the track with
someone elses wing. Magnussen was also out, Panis was pitting along with
Hakkinen. An eventful first lap. Villeneuve joined in the fun on lap 2
going off on his own after over cooking it at the right left flick before
the pits, and retiring from the race. Exit the Canadian interest in the
race.
At the start Schumacher was putting in the fast times, and pulling a
healthy lead out over Fisichella, Alesi, Coulthard, Frentzen and Ralf
Schumacher. Alexander Wurz was up to 7th in his first race. Hill made his
first stop to try and cure an inbalance on lap 4. Panis, meanwhile, was
setting the pace now that he was back in the race. Further down the order
Katayama went off in a big way, hitting the armco head on. The safety car
was then brought out to recover the car. Hill pitted again, and Frentzen
made his first stop.
Once the racing restarted the order was M Schumacher, Fisichella, Alesi,
Coulthard, R Schumacher, and Wurz. Barichello, Verstappen and Salo had a
merry battle for 7th place, with Herbert just behind. Verstappen made a
move on Barrichello, and managed to get by. Salo tried also, but took the
long route around the outside. It failed. Whilst this battle was going on,
Ralf Schumachers race was over. A rear tyre "exploded" and send the car
careering down the armco and into the tyres nose first (again). Wurz was
now up to 5th, and Verstappen to 6th. Salo was continuing his battle with
Barrichello, and Herbert was now also joining in the fun. Salo had a go,
but had to back off when they came across the yellows for Schumacher Jr. At
his next attempt he did it, and Herbert also lunged at Barrichello and also
took a place. Down two places in a lap.
By lap 22, Schumacher was setting laps in the low 1m20's, whilst fellow
German Frentzen was down in 11th suffering from severe blistering (as in
Spain). At the front Coulthard was up with Fisichella and Alesi, with
Schumacher setting laps in the 1m20's. Fisichella and Alesi pitted from 2nd
and third, and came out orders reversed. Coulthard was now up to 2nd, with
Wurz third, Alesi 4th, Fisichella 5th and Salo 6th. Wurz was next to pit,
with Salo doing likewise. Barrichello had been a little too enthusiastic
with his pit stop, and found himself with a 10 second penalty for speeding
in the pit lane. The order on lap 27 was now Schumacher, Coulthard, Alesi,
Fisichella, Herbert and Wurz. Next to pit was Michael Schumacher, giving
Coulthard the lead, and setting laps in the 1m19's!
The order was now Coulthard, Schumacher, Alesi, Fisichella, Herbert, Wurz,
Frentzen, Verstappen, Salo and Diniz. On lap 33, Frentzen pitted again with
badly blistered tyres. Trulli was the next to retire, and Herbert pitted.
Coulthard now had an 8 second lead over Schumacher, whilst Herbert was
attacking Fisichella for 4th place, only to pit with very blistered tyres.
Sadly, Wurz retired after making a very impressive debut for the Benetton
team. Coulthard was soon pitting, and lost the lead to Schumacher. The
German was on a two stop strategy, against Coulthards planned one stop. It
wouldn't be long until Schumacher had to relinquish the lead. Herbert was
next to suffer from enthusiastic pit stops, and find himself with a 10
second penalty. Ferrari were now ready for a stop, with the order
Schumacher, Coulthard (10.4 seconds behind), Alesi, Fisichella, Herbert,
Frentzen, Panis, Verstappen, Salo and Nakano. Schumacher and Panis pitted
at the same time. Panis got away quicker, and delayed the German. Coulthard
was back in the lead. Verstappen was also soon pit bound, with Fisichella
and Alesi pitting soon.
A little later Schumacher was back in the pits with severely blistered
tyres, Frentzen also pitted. The McLaren team decide to take a gamble and
bring Coulthard in from his healthy lead to be safe. Unfortunately it
didn't pay off, with the car stalling in the pit from an undiagnosed clutch
problem. On the track Panis' Prost lost it on the track on turn 4, with the
rear letting go, pitching the Prost into the tyres head on. Panis was
moving in the car, but did not get out. The safety car was brought out, and
the medical team soon arrived. The race continued for a few laps behind the
safety car, whilst Panis was removed and treated at the side of the track.
The race was soon red flagged.
Race stopped on lap 56 due an accident involving Olivier Panis
1. Schumacher
2. Alesi
3. Fisichella
4. Frentzen
5. Herbert
6. Nakano
Initial (unconfirmed) reports from the track indicate that Panis has
nothing worse than broken legs. More details to follow.

I, naravno, po običaju, konferencija za štampu...
F1: Canadian GP winners' press conference
Q. Congratulations, Michael, on equalling Fangio's 27 Grand
Prix victories. Why did you have to make that unexpected
third pit stop?
MS: I took it fairly easy after the second pit stop but
immediately picked up a blister and had to come in to
change them. After that we all know what happened in the
race. We had already put in enough fuel to take me to
the end of the race and it had not been our intention to
stop again. Panis was able to get past me easily because
I had blistered the rear tyres so badly and he was quick
enough on straight line speed to go past me.
Q. Do you think you would have been able to catch David
Coulthard if he had not stalled at his pit stop?
MS: We all had the same problem and it would have depended
on how well he took care of his tyres at the end there.
It depends very much: I don't know whether my fourth set
of tyres would have lasted to the end, and the same
probably applies to David.
Q. Jean, you've taken 2nd place here to add to the 3rd
place you took in Spain. You must be happy to see your
fortunes improving ...
JA: As Michael has said we are all sad about what has
happened to Olivier Panis and we hope to see him fully
recovered and back in his car soon. When you have seen a
car in bits spread all over the circuit it is impossible
to celebrate on the podium. But of course, it is always
good to bring six points to the team, as we did today,
and I am happy.
Q. Can Benetton continue to make progress?
JA: We did some very good testing in Silverstone last week
and we will be testing again before the French GP. Our
car will probably be very competitive there but it is
not possible to say we will win.
Q. Giancarlo, congratulations on your first podium finish.
GF: I am very pleased. I set myself the target of getting a
podium place this season, so be third here is
incredible. But although I am very happy for myself I am
not so happy about the Panis accident.
Q. Did you have any problems during the race?
GF: On the second set I had a problem with blisters on the
front right. Apart from that, everything was OK.
Q. What did you think when Jacques went out to quickly?
MS: What do you think? If someone spins, you look for the
next one who is coming. That was Giancarlo. At a certain
stage he was pushing quite hard, when I wanted to save
my tyres. Jacques could have made the situation more
difficult for me. But apparently Coulthard was the one
today who was to be beaten. He was very fast on his
first stint, even though he was on a one stop strategy
with a lot of fuel. Without their problems, they should
have won today.
Q. What do you now do with the FIA about the safety of this
circuit?
MS: You can be sure that we will study what happened. We
will give our input on what we think should be done.
Then it is up to the FIA to do what is necessary. The
drivers will be involved in this and (help) the FIA to
do the right things.
Q. Michael, did you notice the problems in the high speed
corners in pre-season testing?
MS: It was there from the beginning, but believe me, at the
beginning we didn't just have it in fast corners! We
had it everywhere. If I take my first test in Jerez, I
was quite far off the pace. Therefore I'm pretty pleased
with what we are achieving with this car. I'm actually
looking forward to the next couple of races because we
are going to introduce some new parts into the car which
should make a reasonable difference. I hope that will be
enough to solve the problems we have at Barcelona,
Silverstone, and Magny Cours.
Q. Are you surprised that the race wasn't stopped
immediately after the accident?
MS: It is the same whether you are behind the safety car or
stop the race immediately. It doesn't change the
taking care of Olivier. Race control had to judge the
situation and take their time. As soon as the safety car
is out, we all go so slow that we are no danger for this
situation.
Q. What should be improved safety wise at the track?
MS: There is no point in discussing this year with you. We
want to discuss it with the FIA to achieve the most,
and there is no point in going through the press with
this.
JA: I have been here since 1989 and the circuit was very
similar then. But many places were very dangerous. A lot
of work was done already, but every year we must all
talk together to suggest the necessary developments.
