Apple Licenses Brand to "Apple Cafes" Apple just named Mega Bytes International a licensee of its trademark. Mega Bytes is chartered with developing high-tech theme restaurants bearing the name "Apple Cafe" and the Apple logo worldwide. The first site is scheduled to open in Los Angeles in late 1997. The company's identity will be interwoven into every aspect of the restaurant, and it should provide a great showcase for Apple-compatible software and hardware products. Emphasis will be placed on multimedia and the Internet. From every table, guests can order food, sample the hottest CD-ROM discs, have one-click Internet access to entertainment sites, and videoconference with nearby tables--and, eventually, with guests in Apple Cafe locations around the world. MailArchiver Makes Email Searching and Filing Easier - Even on the Web ISSAQUAH, WA - November 22, 1996 - Blue World Communications, Inc. today officially announced the recent release of MailArchiver, the new mass email management solution. MailArchiver automatically archives email into a Claris FileMaker Pro database for quick retrieval and permanent storage. MailArchiver works with email saved to disk from applications such as Claris Emailer, Qualcomm's Eudora, Quarterdeck's ListSTAR, the Apple Internet Mail Server, and any other program that saves mail to disk in the RFC 822 format. The MailArchiver software quickly and easily archives all email stored in designated folders on a Macintosh computer, or on folders over a Local Area Network. Multiple source folders may be selected, any of which can be routed to individual FileMaker Pro databases (based upon a supplied template). MailArchiver is very easy to configure. Users simply launch the program, select a source folder, enter the name of the target database where messages should go, set the frequency, and click the "save" button. Archiving is fully automatic. Once the email folder locations and archive databases are linked, MailArchiver works transparently in the background, archiving email as often as desired. MailArchiver provides attractive templates for managing email. Users can easily search, sort, delete, and tag email. Built-in scripts allow sorting by message thread, making it easy to track related messages. What's more, users can provide searchable archives of their email using MailArchiver and the freely distributed Lasso Lite. A template is already provided for getting searchable archives on the Web instantaneously. Key benefits of archiving email with MailArchiver include the following: - Rapid searching on thousands of pieces of email facilitates quick retrieval of important correspondence - Ideal creating searchable archives of email discussion forums - Enable multiple users in a workgroup to access public email in a shared network database. For example, with MailArchiver, one can centralize all email designated for a particular email address (i.e. <sales@your_company.com> or <support@your_company.com)> and make it available to multiple users in designated departments - Web-enable email to permit multi-platform workgroup access from anywhere on the World Wide Web - Dramatically reduce the amount of disk space required to store email - Link email databases together with other databases for better information management Users are encouraged to download a free run-limited demo copy of MailArchiver and enjoy the immediate benefits of simplified, organized email management. The demo can be downloaded at <http://www.blueworld.com/mailarchiver/>. For purchase information, contact <sales@blueworld.com> or visit the MailArchiver website at <http://www.blueworld.com/mailarchiver/>. MailArchiver is available direct from Blue World Communications, Inc. as an electronically distributed version costing $79. This is a newspaper for physicists. In it there is an article by Robert Austin, professor of physics at Princeton University and a member of the APS Electronics Publication Committee. His article focuses on the frustrations encountered in cross platform communications. He writes, "If you are a typical experimentalist (physics) you have a raft of PCs, maybe a UNIX workstation to impress incoming graduate students, and a Mac hidden in your office to actually do things." An interesting observation on what platform to use when you really want to do something. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh?

POWER COMPUTING CORPORATION AND JEAN LOUIS GASSEE'S BE, INC. SIGN EXCLUSIVE LICENSING DEAL TO BUNDLE BE OS ON POWER COMPUTING'S POWERPC-BASED MACINTOSH SYSTEMS (ROUND ROCK, Texas) November 26, 1996 -Power Computing Corporation, the leading MacOS systems vendor, and Jean-Louis Gasse's Be, Incorporated, today announced that beginning in the first quarter of 1997, all Power Computing systems will ship with the Be Operating System (BeOS) in addition to the Macintosh Operating System. The critically acclaimed BeOS will provide Power Computing's customers with a very powerful and rich tool with which high-peformance symmetric multiprocessing, preemptive multitasking, multithreading as well as object-oriented design will create an environment that accomodates a growing number of cutting-edge multimedia and communications-based applications without forcing users to make additional hardware investments. Months of secret collaboration between Power Computing and Be, Inc. became public at Macworld Exposition Boston earlier this year when both companies stunned the industry by unvieling a port of the BeOS running on Power Computing Macintosh OS hardware. Since than, speculation on the date and terms of a potential licensing deal have swirled unabated - until today. As part of the agreement announced today, the two companies will work together will ensure that the BeOS will run on all Power systems, including PowerTower Pro, PowerTower, PowerCenter and PowerBase systems. The BeOS will be bundled at no additonal charge for customers purchasing Power Computing customers and will come on a bootable CD-ROM. While deal specifics were not annouced today, both companies indicated that specifics including available applications and utilities would be announced formally at the upcoming Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 1997. Power Computing will make avaialable the BeOS at no charge to customers ordering and receiving systems between now and date of first ship of the BeOS. Existing Power Computing customers will be able to purchase the BeOS directly from Be's world wide website. The companies added that the announcement should serve as a clear signal to the software development community that there will be a large and growing number of BeOS seats starting in the first quarter of 1997. In addition, both Kahng and Gassee indicated that they are enthused and excited about both the quality and number of software developers currently in the process of porting and writing new and exisiting applications to the BeOS on the PowerPC MacOS platform.

Sve fercera, nikakvih problema nemam.

Bare Bones Software Releases BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc As Freeware Bedford, MA -- Bare Bones Software, Inc. today announced the release of BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc(TM), a software module ("OpenDoc part") for use with Apple Computer's OpenDoc component software environment. Built for elegant text manipulation, this OpenDoc part is being distributed as freeware. BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc brings the text-editing and text-transformation capabilities made famous by "BBEdit", the industry-leading text editor, to the OpenDoc environment. When specifying BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc as the editor for text content, OpenDoc users may take advantage of BBEdit's ability to edit and process large quantities of text with great speed. Included in the BBEdit Lite part is the ability to perform search-and-replace operations on text, including the ability to apply "Grep" pattern-matching rules for powerful and flexible text searching. In addition to Grep capabilities, BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc provides text transformation tools such as Change Case, Entab and Detab, Zap Gremlins (to remove or change eight bit characters within text), and Hard Wrapping. As with other members in the BBEdit family, BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc supports BBEdit Extensions, enabling users to write their own text manipulation tools. "BBEdit rocks!" said Jim Black, Apple Component Software Evangelist. "Many users, myself included, have been eagerly anticipating a BBEdit Lite part for OpenDoc. Since all OpenDoc components interoperate seamlessly, BBEdit fans can now use the features of their favorite text editor directly from within any OpenDoc document." Bare Bones Software has an established tradition of technological leadership. BBEdit was the first commercial text editor to integrate with Symantec and Apple development tools, support emerging technologies such as Apple Guide, AppleScript, Macintosh Drag and Drop, XTND(TM), PowerTalk, and Internet integration, and to take advantage of the high performance PowerPC(TM) processor used in the Power Macintosh(R) platform. Bare Bones Software is releasing BBEdit Lite for OpenDoc as freeware. People can download the package at no charge from the Bare Bones Software web site, located at <http://www.barebones.com>. For further information, people can visit the website, or send e-mail to <bbsw@barebones.com>.

QuickDraw 3D for Macintosh and Windows Receives Best of COMDEX Award At last month's COMDEX/Fall '96 in Las Vegas, Apple announced that QuickDraw 3D, its outstanding 3D architecture for workstation-quality graphics on personal computers, has received the prestigious COMDEX/Fall '96 Best of Show Award in the multimedia software category. QuickDraw 3D 1.5 is a significant update that brings QuickDraw 3D to Mac OS and 32- bit Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms to enable multiplatform development of 3D authoring tools, games, and other applications. QuickDraw 3D has been available for the Mac OS since August 1995, and the version 1.5 is a simultaneous update for both Mac OS and Windows 95/NT computers. QuickDraw 3D 1.5 installers for the Mac OS and 32-bit Windows are now available for downloading from the following web site: http://quickdraw3d.apple.com QuickDraw 3D can be installed on users' computers to provide excellent 3D performance, and a separate SDK (software development kit) allows developers to incorporate QuickDraw 3D for Macintosh or Windows into their products. For more information on the SDK, visit the QuickDraw 3D web site given above. In support of this new cross-platform initiative, over 25 hardware and software vendors have endorsed--and plan to incorporate and support-- QuickDraw 3D for Windows in their upcoming products. Major software vendors that intend to use QuickDraw 3D 1.5 for Windows include Specular, Strata, and NewTek. Macromedia is also supporting QuickDraw 3D as an Xtra extension for Director 5.0, which can be downloaded by all registered users. A number of leading hardware vendors, including 3Dfx, 3Dlabs, ATI, S3, S-MOS, and Cirrus Logic, also support QuickDraw 3D with their 3D hardware boards and chips. A testimony to the true portability of QuickDraw 3D is that 99.9 percent of the function calls are identical between the Macintosh and Windows versions. Only six calls differ between the two. Since its introduction on the Macintosh in 1995, QuickDraw 3D has won a number of industry awards, including the following: * COMDEX/Fall '96 Best of Show Award for Multimedia Software * Discover Magazine 1996 Technology Awards Finalist * Publish 1996 IMPACT Award * BYTE Magazine 1995 Editors' Choice Awards: Award of Distinction * MacUser 1995 Editors' Choice (Eddy) Award: Breakthrough Technology of the Year * MacWorld World Class Awards 1995: Best New Technology For a detailed description of the new features in QuickDraw 3D 1.5, see the press release on the web: http://product.info.apple.com/pr/press.releases/1997/q1/961122.pr.rel.qd 3d.htm l

A student enters my office nearly hysterical because she can't get her assignments off a disk created with Win95/Works on our Pentiums. She hadn't made more than a single set of copies. None of the Win95 system items or other applications will let her access her stuff through any program. Attempts all end with something like the file is corrupted and can't find the path etc. or this is a bad disk etc.. It is basically fried. One of my colleagues ( a pc guy who knows his stuff) tries various methods using various pc rescue software (norton disc doctor etc.). No luck whatsoever, he spends quite a while on it (all afternoon), but finally gives up. The student is really numb by this time. Entering the grief process I think. I tell my student not to worry. It just seems like something a mac can handle. I take the disk, slap it in an old IICX we have using 7.5.3, the pc disk is accessible, so I access the file , its too big for Simpletext so I use Word and Maclink plus. Presto I have her document and print it out. I save all her docs. and attempt to intialize her disk in PC format. No dice, it is indeed fried. So I create a new disk, slap her stuff on it. Time for all this, about 5-7 minutes. Next day, I give her all the stuff, smile at her and tell her to do her writing on our old macs and save herself some trouble. My colleague just shook his head and kept saying, "That's impressive, geez that's impressive. Geez, geez! Wow" I just had to emphasize I was solving Win95 problems with a mac system on the equivalent (well not really) of a 386 macnine. I think he is getting close to buying a PowerMac. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? More Good News About the Macintosh Platform Here are more items that point to the strength of the Apple platform in today's market: * In November, Apple shipped its 26 millionth Macintosh computer, an increase of 1 million computers since last August. Because many Macintosh computers are shared by multiple users, Apple estimates that there are more than 60 million Macintosh users in the world today. These numbers show a healthy demand for Apple Macintosh computers--and for your products that run on them. * For the fourth time in a row, readers of PC World voted Apple Macintosh computers as being number one in reliability. (PC World conducts this survey twice a year, so that means Apple has received this award for two years in a row.) In addition, readers also credited Apple phone support as having the lowest hold time of any PC vendor. (PC World is an industrywide personal computer magazine that covers computers from all vendors, including Apple Computer and vendors of IBM PC-compatible computers.) * Apple was also rated number one in reliability in another user survey just completed by HomePC magazine. Apple customers who responded said they ran into far fewer problems that required a call to technical support; if they did have to call, Apple phone support resolved the problem more quickly than any other vendor did. * For over seven years, Broderbund's Family Tree Maker for Windows has been the top-selling program for preserving family histories. In response to (in Broderbund's own words) "the overwhelming customer demand from family history enthusiasts," the company just announced that it will ship a Macintosh version of Family Tree Maker. This Macintosh version has the same major features as the Windows version and can access the collection of Family Archive CDs that are also available from Broderbund. This is a win for Apple, because it shows how a developer of a Windows-only product can see a lucrative business opportunity the Macintosh platform.

SIMBA Reports Apple Gains in Education Markets A recent study by SIMBA Information of Stamford, Connecticut, reported a strong gain in the number of educational software developers for the Macintosh platform. According to SIMBA's survey, "Macintosh as a platform choice showed healthy improvement in 1996, jumping to 86 percent from 73 percent in 1995." SIMBA's "Electronic Media for the School Market" report also says that Microsoft's Windows School Connection program now has 114 educational software publishers as members. In comparison, Apple's Education Solution Provider (ESP) currently has nearly twice as many members (about 200) who publish educational products for the Macintosh platform. Also included in SIMBA's report are survey results by Education Market Research (EMR) of Rockaway Park, New York. In a survey of 60 school technology dealers in the United States, EMR reported that sales (in dollars) of Macintosh systems were up in 1996 by 11 percent from 1994 to 1995, while sales of DOS and Windows systems showed no appreciable growth. According to EMR, total hardware dollar sales to the K-12 market increased by 14.8 percent in 1995-1996. EMR defined hardware as computer systems, file servers/networking software, modems, CD-ROM drives, and videocassette/videodisc players. Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 17:58:25 -0500 From: MacWay@aol.com Subject: Viva La Mac Message-ID: <961207175824_1618222266@emout16.mail.aol.com> This tidbit is from: <jonalper@tiac.net> (Jon Alper) I received the following email from a new employee at a client's site; with his permission I am forwarding it along: ___ So I'm now a Mac convert (despite the fact I'm writing you from my home PC). There's no question that Macs are better machines...especially for small to medium sized shops. Certainly our business, Corporate Realty Advisors is better off with Macs. The biggest concern I had was in communicating and sharing files with the non-Mac world. It appears as though that will never be an issue thanks to the wealth of translators developed for the Mac. Viva La Mac! ___ A little background on this will help Evangelistas appreciate this turnaround even more. The guy who mailed me this, Steve, was recently hired by my client. (CRA) He was a devoted PC user and, while not a bigot, operated under the usual misconceptions about the Mac. I met with him and his boss at the local MicroCenter (Shameless Plug!! They have *real* Mac departments and, at least here in Boston, some *great* staff!). We sat down in front of a 7600 and I walked him through the basics of the Mac. He was impressed...He is also considered by his boss to be a "computer guy". We were pondering integrating his PC into CRA's newtwork and planning to share files etc. The boss eventually said, "Screw it! Steve get's a Mac. He'll learn. I like Macs I've had 'em for years and I'm just not gonna switch now." (Gotta love that!<g) As Steve's new 7600 was being put together to go out the MicroCenter door Steve was remarkably good humored about having a Mac shoved down his throat and said: "OK Jon can you point me to some good books and I'll learn this Mac thing..." I directed him to "Macworld Mac and PowerMac Secrets" and "The Little Mac Book"...He paid for them himself despite the bosses offer to buy them... Later...two weeks later.. I got the following in email: ____ I installed Claris Emailer on [the boss's Mac] The intent was to make his receiving email absolutely painless. I set up a schedule for automatic send/recieve of email through his new account at ATT Worldnet...all's well so far. I then learned through one of the Mac Magazines that each email session initiated in this way requires a manual logoff.. (or a short time-out) to disconnect. (That seems pretty sloppy for a machine that I've come to respect so quickly). The suggested fix in the magazine was to download a newer version of either MacPPP or FreePPP and logon with an applescript located on a bbs called "Fogcity" (I believe). I downloaded said files, expanded them and followed the installation instructions therein contained (what little instructions there were anyway). I installed the new FreePPP v 2.5 using an installation program called installation monkey. My Mac happily reported that the installation was successful and urged me to reboot for the new FreePPP to take effect...I complied. I thought it curious at the time that the installation didn't ask me for any Internet Provider Info, but figured "Hey it's a Mac...It must have read the existing folder for me and copied the info." Unfortunately, however, the FreePPP failed to open when I initiated a Claris session. I received an error message indicating that the program was unable to open the PPP Preferences file because it was either corrupted or missing. ____ As you can imagine it only took a few minutes on the phone call to get him up and running. Needless to say, I'm pretty much out of a job with this client but I don't care! In about two weeks the guy who had never really used a Mac before is happily running the show for his new employer and learning the Mac really fast! He went from knowing nothing to hunting down AppleScripts to automate the boss's PPP connections. As Steve said in his email: "Viva La Mac" ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? I još mnogo sličnih situacija...

Apple to Acquire NeXT On December 20, 1996, Apple Computer, Inc. announced its intention to purchase NeXT Software Inc., in a friendly acquisition for $400 million. Pending regulatory approvals, all NeXT products, services, and technology research will become part of Apple Computer, Inc. As part of the agreement, Steve Jobs, Chairman and CEO of NeXT Software, will return to Apple--the company he co-founded in 1976--reporting to Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, Apple's Chairman and CEO. The acquisition will bring together Apple's and NeXT's innovative and complementary technology portfolios and significantly strengthens Apple's position as a company advancing industry standards. Apple's leadership in ease-of-use and multimedia solutions will be married to NeXT's strengths in development software and operating environments for both the enterprise and Internet markets. NeXT's object oriented software development products will contribute to Apple's goal of creating a differentiated and profitable software business, with a wide range of products for enterprise, business, education, and home markets. Using NeXT technology to embrace open industry standards Apple Computer, Inc. believes the acquisition will allow the Company to further develop industry alliances as the Internet/intranet market evolves. Apple anticipates that NeXT's expertise in next-generation operating system design will allow elements of the NEXTSTEP operating system to become integral features of Mac OS--providing developers a compelling OS foundation on which to build next generation software solutions. "The acquisition of NeXT is the start of a new chapter in Apple's history and represents a milestone in our transformation as a corporation," said Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, Chairman and CEO, Apple Computer Inc. "Today Apple welcomed back its most talented visionary" Steve Jobs, someone who can inspire a new generation of customers and software developers and show that Apple remains the industry home for innovation and excitement. Today Apple returns, as an open player to the mainstream and the heart of this industry, where our technology can once more set standards for innovation and excellence. "Much of the industry has lived off the Macintosh for over ten years now, slowly copying the Mac's revolutionary user interface," said Steven P. Jobs. "Now the time has come for new innovation, and where better than Apple for this to spring from? Who else has consistently led this industry--first with the Apple II, then the Macintosh and LaserWriter? With this merger, the advanced software from NeXT will be married with Apple's very high-volume hardware platforms and marketing channels to create another breakthrough, leapfrogging existing platforms, and fueling Apple and the industry copy cats for the next ten years and beyond. I still have very deep feelings for Apple, and it gives me great joy to play a role in architecting Apple's future." Acquisition Confirms New Open Apple The acquisition of NeXT is further evidence that Apple is fundamentally changing the way it does business. Embracing outside technology and driving cross-platform industry standards, Apple believes it can innovate in the key areas that give its products and technology differentiation. NeXT's cross-platform development environments for enterprise and Internet/intranet markets, allow developers to write once and deploy across a range of Internet and client-server platforms. In a new era of industry collaboration and joint initiatives--brought on by the "megatrends" of pervasive Internet and ubiquitous multimedia-- NeXT technology complements Apple's strength in multimedia authoring and playback, as well as Internet access, Internet authoring, and Internet server solutions. In the last year Apple has worked on a series of collaboration initiatives which leverage the Company's core strengths in Internet, multimedia, and component software. Wide ranging agreements with Netscape Communications, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Graphics Computer Systems--along with the acquisition of NeXT--confirm Apple is building strategic relationships at the forefront of the information industry. Developer Support Software developers believe that the integration of NEXTSTEP technology in future versions of Mac OS will result in a robust, next-generation OS that provides developers with a multimedia-rich and Internet-savvy platform. "This partnership is the best possible fit. Both companies support strong, open industry standards. Combined with their rich media focus and a command of the Internet, these strengths will play well into Adobe's core markets", says John Warnock, Chairman and CEO, Adobe Systems, Inc. "NeXT's advanced operating system design, when combined with Apple's leadership in ease-of-use and multimedia, will provide Adobe and other developers with a robust, compelling platform on which to build great next-generation software solutions." Apple expects to be able to show substantial developer and industry endorsements for Apple's new Mac OS system software strategy at MacWorld San Francisco in January 1997. Apple Computer, Inc. believes the acquisition will provide a series of benefits for customers, software developers, Apple Computer, NeXT, and the information technology industry. They include the following: Enterprise Offering Enhanced The combination of Apple technology, NeXT object oriented software development products, and the "megatrend" of corporate-wide intranets, gives Apple the opportunity to reinvigorate its offering to enterprise markets. NeXT's OPENSTEP Enterprise and WebObjects development environments allow enterprise customers to develop software solutions quickly and deploy reusable applications on either traditional client-server or Internet/intranet based networks. These powerful tools allow new applications to access legacy data and applications, a key concern for enterprise customers in the late 1990s. Customers currently using this technology range from companies such as WebCrawler, Trilobyte and ID to large organizations including Fannie Mae, Merrill Lynch, NASA, NTT, and AT&T Wireless. In addition, NeXT's Sales and Professional Services team offers worldwide programs to facilitate the knowledge transfer required to quickly take advantage of OPENSTEP Enterprise's unique capabilities. Apple envisages this team will become a valued part of the Apple enterprise offering moving forward. Internet/intranet Position Strengthened A key strategic advantage of NeXT technology is its powerful Internet/intranet software development environment--WebObjects. Today, Apple technology and customers are playing a pivotal role in the evolution of the Internet--from easy to use powerful solutions in Internet access, Internet authoring and Internet servers, to technologies such as QuickTime Media Layer (QTML) and HotSauce/MCF that set new standards in Internet multimedia and knowledge management. Combining these Apple strengths with WebObjects' unique capabilities to access legacy data and applications will provide Apple with a strong offering for companies reengineering their businesses to take advantage of the Internet. Customers currently using WebObjects technology include The Sharper Image, Ford, Nissan, Lufthansa, and Bell South. Again, Apple foresees NeXT's Sales and Professional Services team continuing to offer programs to companies who are implementing corporate-wide business reengineering based upon a new Internet/intranet infrastructure. In addition, the momentum of Java, Sun Microsystems' platform- independent programming language, has led Apple to conclude that by implementing a Java architecture across its platforms and development tools portfolio, Apple systems will be at the forefront of Internet/Internet design--an area of enormous potential growth through the millennium. WebObjects' Java-enabled object oriented model complements Apple Computer's commitment to Java, which includes Mac OS Runtime for Java (currently in beta) and the integration of JavaBeans and OpenDoc component technology. Apple Computer, Inc. believes the acquisition of NeXT will give the Company the opportunity to become a preeminent development and deployment platform for Java technology. Acquisition Kick-Starts Apple Software Business The acquisition of NeXT's development products for enterprise and Internet markets will allow Apple to supplement its growing list of software products with a ready-made portfolio of powerful customer- focused software solutions. Apple is committed to increasing the revenue it makes from its software products and the acquisition of NeXT is a significant development in building a differentiated, sustainable and profitable software business. Apple already has a number of software products--from QuickTime to HotSauce/MCF, which are driving industry standards in multimedia and Internet markets--to customer applications and tools such as Apple Internet Connection Kit (AICK), Apple Media Tool, Language Kits, and communications software. Delivery of Next Generation Mac OS Apple's exhaustive research in operating system design, led the company to conclude that NEXTSTEP's maturity, networking, customer and developer acceptance, multi-tasking, protected memory, and scalability from portable to server-level products make it the clear choice for integration into the next major revision of Mac OS. Apple believes that the integration of NEXTSTEP technology in future versions of Mac OS will result in a robust, next generation OS that provides customers and developers with a multimedia-rich and Internet-savvy platform. Apple Chairman and CEO Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, Chief Technology Officer Ellen Hancock, and Steve Jobs will announce details of how Apple will incorporate NeXT technology into future releases of Mac OS at MacWorld San Francisco in January. Acquisition Brings New Talent to Apple The acquisition of NeXT will result in new management talent joining Apple Computer, Inc. Avie Tevanian, formally NeXT's Vice President of Engineering, will join Apple to lead the Company's next generation OS development efforts, reporting to Ellen Hancock, Apple's executive vice president of R&D, and Chief Technology Officer. Mitch Mandich, formally NeXT's vice president of Worldwide Sales and Services, will also join Apple, reporting to Marco Landi, Apple's executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer. Dominique Trempont, NeXT's Chief Financial Officer will also be joining Apple's executive team. As a complement to this initiative, Apple Computer, Inc. also announces that Rick LeFaivre has returned to the company as head of the newly formed Apple Technology Group. This group will house Apple's research laboratories, human interface technologies, and advanced systems architecture, offering support for hardware and software integration. Rick LeFaivre will report to Ellen Hancock in this new role.

mac.1841 madamov,
---------------------- LETTER TO DEVELOPERS ---------------------- Special Announcement from Ellen Hancock Dear Apple Developers: Today Apple announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase NeXT in a friendly acquisition. NeXT employees, products, services and technology research will become part of the Apple organization. Although this is not a full disclosure of the detailed Mac OS strategy, I felt it was important for me to share my thoughts on what this acquisition means to you, our developers. As we have previously stated, we plan to announce the comprehensive Mac OS strategy at Macworld in San Francisco on January 7, 1997. The acquisition of NeXT demonstrates that Apple is embracing outside technology and cross platform standards. It's clear the "not invented here" syndrome is dead. NeXT's development environments allow developers to write once and deploy across a range of platforms. One of NeXT's greatest strengths is its rich collection of tools which allows for rapid assembly, integration and deployment of multi-platform solutions. NeXT's dynamic object-oriented development environments also allow enterprise customers to develop software solutions quickly and deploy reusable applications on either traditional client-server or Internet/intranet-based networks. These same tools enable new applications to access legacy data and applications which protect customer investments in information technology. The acquisition of NeXT is expected to solidify Apple's inherent strengths in the Internet/intranet space. Current Apple Internet products and technologies, when combined with NeXT's object-oriented Java-enabled open development platform, should give us a competitive advantage and the opportunity to become a preeminent development and deployment platform for Java technology. I believe that NeXT's profitable development environments for enterprise and Internet markets allow Apple to supplement its growing list of software products with a ready-made portfolio of powerful customer- focused software solutions. This acquisition is expected to be a significant milestone in building a differentiated, sustainable and profitable software business. Finally, NeXT's OS is mature and robust and can serve as a strong foundation for the future of Apple's software business. NeXT's OS provides many of the features you have been demanding in a future OS such as fully preemptive multitasking, protected memory and robust information linking and networking capabilities. It also contains a powerful object-oriented architecture which provides a greater scalability from laptops to server-level products. I am also confident that compatibility with existing applications will be strong in Mac OS as it evolves. I believe that the acquisition of NeXT will be good for Apple developers. I believe it will enhance your development environment and strengthens your position in several of Apple's key markets, namely enterprise and the Internet/intranet space. The integration of NEXTSTEP OS technology into future versions of the Mac OS should result in a robust, modern OS that provides customers and developers with a media- rich and Internet-savvy platform. It really is my pleasure to share what I feel is great news and I look forward to your continued support. I believe this acquisition represents the passage of a major milestone in Apple's transformation and renaissance. We enter a new year with even greater relevance in the industry and a much stronger position as a mainstream, open player. Ellen Hancock Executive Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Technology Officer Apple Computer, Inc.

The Metro Nashville Police Department is using this technology to produce linked panoramas at violent crime scenes for jury presentations. We would like to thank Apple Computer (and Mike Galo - Technology Express) for the help in this bold step. You will be hearing more about this work later - but if you would like to get a taste of this technology... see below. The image quality of these movies is low (and these were the the first movies we made with the software right-out-of-the-box) but realize that 10 of the single-node movies would fit on one floppy disk and MUCH higher quality movies would be used for court. The Metro Nashville Police Department is using this technology to link views at violent crime scenes. The jurors can view where the defendant, witness, officer or subject was sitting and click to go to other points visible in the movie. The links can bring up sounds, pictures or object movies. These can be displayed on a large screen television for the court. (Macs) You can hit command-shift-3 and print out any desktop - useful for enlarged views at a particular point of interest. On the other hand, if you want to teach your kid that life if full of frustration and that anything worth getting takes plenty of patience and hard work, a Windows machine should do quite nicely. --From "Modem Driver" columnist David Plotnikoff in the San Jose Mercury News _________ May I also point out that if your friends are set on buying a Windows machine for Christmas that you "mention" that next year the Intel chip will have MMX built into it, so they might want to wait. Then next year, you should tell them that software developers haven't taken advantage of MMX yet, so they might want to wait. Or, they could buy a Macintosh. IMHO, delaying the sale of a Windows machine is almost as good as catalyzing the sale of a Macintosh. (TSS), announced DAVE for the Apple Macintosh at WINDOWS WORLD/Dallas. DAVE, which will be available in late November at $179.00, is an easy-to-use Macintosh software solution for sharing files and printers with Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT using TCP/IP. DAVE enables Macintosh users to share files and printers with Windows NT (Server and Workstation), Windows 95 and Windows for Workgroups computers. DAVE is the long awaited step towards making the Macintosh totally compatible and interoperable with Wintel networks. It makes the Macintosh fit into Microsoft networks as if it were a PC, with remote access to NT Servers and PostScript printers. DAVE is based on open, industry standard protocols for the Internet such as TCP/IP, X/Open and CIFS, the Common Internet File System protocol. DAVE is very attractive to network managers and administrators because management requirements of the network are reduced since proprietary transports are avoided. DAVE enables the Macintosh to function as a client in standards-based networks, including corporate intranets and the Internet, reducing WAN costs, lowering LAN management expenditures and simplifying network troubleshooting. This solution is unique because DAVE uses TCP/IP, not AppleTalk. It is installed on the Macintosh and not the PC. No additional hardware or software is required; it simply utilizes the current network infrastructure. Users access Microsoft networks as if they were on a local Macintosh volume. There's no need for downloading or copying files to the local drive. TSS can be contacted at (817) 478-5070, by Internet e-mail: <sales@thursby.com> or <http://www.thursby.com>

For the second year in a row, WebSTAR and MacHTTP combined to capture top server honors with a total of 36% of the Web servers deployed on the 'Net. This is 5% more than Netscape's server, and the next closest was Apache at 21.7%. WebSTAR by itself was the second most used server at 23.6%. NT servers were a distant 5th, at 13.87%.
