Mac-clone makers escalate price war, turn up heat on Apple
Macintosh clone vendors Umax and Power Computing turned the
price-performance screws on each other and beleaguered Apple
Computer on Tuesday with a round of price cuts and one new
system introduction.
Umax announced a 180-MHz 603e-based Macintosh clone for $1,349,
not including a $50 manufacturer's rebate.
In addition, the company slashed prices on its S900, J700, and
C600 product lines. For instance, the company took $700 of its
SuperMac S900/180 dual-processored desktop system, knocking its
estimated street price down to $3,899. The SuperMac S900/180
now costs $3,199, down from $3,599, and the price of the
SuperMac J700 was chopped $600, down to $2,499. Umax also cut
prices on its C600/200 model by $200, reducing the system's
street price to $1,799.
"With price reductions across our entire product family, we
think we are driving our price-performance advantages over the
Wintel platform, creating more reasons for new users to
consider a MacOS compatible system," said Andy Chang, senior
vice president at Umax.
Aimed primarily at the consumer and education markets, the
company's new SuperMac C500/180 sports a user-upgradable
processor card as well as a 16-bit stereo with Sound Retrieval
System surround sound.
The system's basic configuration includes 16MB of memory that
can be expanded to 144MB, a 256KB Level 2 cache, 1MB of
on-board video-dedicated DRAM, an eight-speed CD-ROM drive, a
1.2GB hard drive, two PCI slots, and a SCSI-2 bus. The system's
interfaces include one Apple Desktop Bus port for a keyboard
and mouse, two RS-232/RS-422 geo-port compatible serial ports,
and a rear 16-bit audio output port.
For its part, Power Computing levied price cuts of as much as
21 percent across its full range of MacOS-based systems,
including the PowerBase, PowerCenter, and PowerTower Pro
families.
Each system in the high-performance PowerTower Pro line has
been reduced in price by $600. The PowerTower Pro 225, for
example, has been cut in price from $4,295 to $3,695 for a
system sporting a 225-MHz PowerPC 604e processor on an
upgradable daughter card, 1MB of Level 2 cache, 32MB of RAM, a
2GB hard drive, an eight-speed CD-ROM drive, an 8MB 128-bit IMS
Twin Turbo Accelerated PCI graphics card, six PCI expansion
slots, nine expansion bays, a keyboard, and a mouse.
Pricing for all Power Computing Mac clones now ranges from
$1,295 for the entry-level PowerBase 180 to $4,699 for the
flagship PowerTower Pro 250 MP.
In addition to price cuts, the company will now ship all
PowerCenter systems with 2MB of on-board video RAM, providing
users with the option of 24-bit or 16.8 million colors on
displays as large as 17 inches.
This most recent round of price cuts follows on the heels of
last week's price slashing on Mac-clone maker Motorola's
StarMax systems. Apple itself hoisted the price ax two weeks
ago in a round of cuts that affected its entire lineup of
hardware.

No, ide se dalje:
Apple to employ Motorola's 300-MHz PowerPC chip
Apple Computer will use Motorola's new 300-MHz 603e PowerPC
microprocessor in future PowerMacintosh and PowerBook models, a
Motorola executive said Tuesday.
Motorola will release the chip next month at the CeBit trade
show in Hannover, Germany.
Although Apple has not admitted to signing a purchasing
contract with Motorola, "to assume that Apple will buy the
300-MHz chips would not be wrong," said Paul Clark, European
marketing and communications manager for Motorola's RISC group.
The new 603 series chip will be the fastest chip ever released
by Motorola, Clark said.
Motorola has previously announced its plans to manufacture a
300-MHz 603 microprocessor, but, until now, has not indicated
when it would be available or which systems manufacturers would
use the chip.
Clark said Apple is also considering building a system around a
forthcoming version of Motorola's 620 PowerPC processor. Groupe
Bull is expected to adopt the upgraded 620 chips in its line of
Unix servers.
"Bull will be the first to use the 620 chips, but Apple is also
seriously looking at using them," Clark said.
Apple in recent days announced the PowerBook 3400 based on
Motorola's 240-MHz 603e chip and the PowerMacintosh 9600/233
based on the 233-MHz 604e processor.
With the fast new processors, Apple is positioning the powerful
notebook and desktop as "Pentium-flattening" machines that can
outperform even Pentium Pro laptops, according to Peter Lunn,
PowerBook business and marketing manager for Apple U.K. and
Ireland Ltd.
Also at CeBit, Motorola's New Media Systems group will launch
two network computers based on the Motorola 800 series chips,
Clark said.

Press reports about Apple got you down? They've got our own Andrew Gore
down, too. And he's decided to ask the question we've all been asking:
how is it that so many unconnected reporters could behave the same way in
covering the Apple story?
For Gore's answer, check out "Lemmings," this week's installment of The
Gorey Details.
In addition to Andy's discussion of coverage of Apple, this week's Gorey
Details inaugurates a new feature, the Gorey Details Site of the Week.

It's all available via The Gorey Details, only at:

Some key paragraphs:
"Take the Macintosh market. It is true that Apple has been through some
rough times in the last year and that reporters who have reported on
these problems are just doing their jobs. There was that huge loss last
Spring. Certainly, the fact that the media had unleashed an almost
nonstop barrage of negative stories about Apple for months before that
loss had no influence on those results. After all, this last quarter
Apple's holiday-season unit shipments took a dramatic nosedive. We all
read the dire reports, which somehow overlooked the fact that the total
unit shipments for all Mac OS systems, both from Apple and clone makers,
were up nine percent. Power Computing sold more than 100,000 clones last
year, UMAX did nearly 100,000 units in its first six months, and Motorola
did a startling 40,000 in its first eight weeks of shipping Mac products.
Obviously, such trifling details hardly warrant mention, so no one
mentioned them.
Then there was the recent spate of newspaper opinion columns opining on
the impending death of Apple. Some of these columns, often written by
pundits claiming to be former Mac fans themselves, warn potential
customers that they'd be fools to buy a Macintosh. After all, they are
just doing their jobs, helping keep consumers from making what could turn
out to be a foolish investment.
I can't help but wonder why these selfsame experts aren't warning people
away from Polaroid's products, since that company -- as big and as
visible as Apple -- has also had a hard year. For that matter, where was
this legion of self-proclaimed purveyors of all that is right and good in
computing when Microsoft's Bob bombed? Where were the months of
relentless beating in the press the folks in Redmond should have earned
for foisting such trash on the public? Or how about the disaster that is
Windows CE? I haven't seen a single story in the mainstream press about a
return rate that is reportedly as high as 30 percent on Windows CE-based
devices, and I've yet to see a column in The Wall Street Journal decrying
the product's wooden interface or limited functionality."

USING THE INTERNET HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER--NOT TO MENTION MORE FUN!
Melbourne, Australia -- Hotline Communications announced the release of
version 1.1 beta 20 of Hotline, the all new internet communications tool
for the Mac OS.
Hotline, authored by Adam Hinkley <hinks@netspace.net.au>, is a new
client/server technology for internet and intranet communications. It
supports file transfer, chat, and news--But does not utilize the aging
FTP, IRC, and NNTP standards. Instead, Hotline is designed to take
advantage of the Mac OS in ways that these unix-based protocols cannot.
>From the moment that you launch Hotline, and marvel at it's instantaneous
response, and starkly cool features, you won't be able to go back.
When you first start Hotline, you'll be asked to choose a nickname and
icon to represent you. You then connect to a server by either typing
information in, or selecting a bookmark to use.
Once you've connected, you'll notice that Hotline is divided up into
different windows, which you can show or hide as you fancy. You'll see
Real-time conversations being carried out in the chat window; messages
that are posted in the news window; a list of users with the option for
private messages in the user list; a list of transactions between the
server you are connected to and your computer, detailed in the Tasks
window; and a customizable tool bar for easy access to all of the above.
The File Transfer improvements introduced in Hotline are numerous. The
good old FTP system used to seem great...but it just can't doesn't offer
these Hotline advantages:
-> Resumable file transfer every time. Compare this to a traditional tool
such as Fetch, a well respected FTP tool. As of Fetch 3.0.2b3, you must
meet many requirements to resume a download. Notably, you can only resume
if the FTP server supports the restart (REST) command, and if you have
not quit since you began the download. Hotline, on the other hand, will
ALWAYS let you resume your download OR upload. As long as you have not
deleted the partial file on your from your hard drive, Hotline can resume
the transfer. No questions asked!
-> Support for any file format. With Hotline, you don't need to convert
your files to strange formats (such as BinHex/.hqx). Hotline recognizes
Macintosh files, and will even display a representative icon (Ex.:
application, text file, read-only text file, etc.)
-> File Queuing. You can easily queue files for transfer one-at-a-time,
or transmit or receive them at the same time.
Hotline's alluring chat and news features warrant description, too.
The Chat window is divided up into two simple parts: A log of all that
has been said (labeled with the nickname of who said it), and an area for
typing new tidbits.
The News window is even easier. You'll find a listing there of all the
tidbits that people have chosen to post. The news section is often used
for announcements of new servers, or to schedule future virtual
"meetings".
The latest public beta introduces a multitude of advances and tweakings:
-> New "Tracker" button on toolbar (and in menu) connects to a tracker
server specified in the Options window, and displays a list of currently
active servers (with name, user count, description). Double-click a
server to connect to it.
-> More helpful user list: Users that have been inactive for 10 minutes
are grayed out, and the names of administrators of the server are drawn
in red.
-> Private message windows have been vastly improved.
-> Various interface improvements
-> Those with special access privs. can find out info. about a user.
-> When the name or icon is changed (Options window) when connected, it
will update in the user list without having to reconnect.
-> Various bug fixes: Queued file transfers now work as expected (they
were accidentally broken in b19). Critical sections of text engine have
been rewritten in order to fix bugs, and improve performance and
reliability.
-> New options window with tabs and extra settings, e.g., color of chat
text, always queue transfers etc.
Obtaining and setting up Hotline is a breeze!
1 -> Check the requirements: PowerPC or 68K Macintosh running Mac OS 7.5
or later (7.5.5 recommended), with Open Transport 1.0 (1.1.1 or better
strongly recommended). Hotline will not work with MacTCP. If you have a
modem and a PPC Mac, OT/PPP is strongly recommended. It is noticeably
faster and is Open Transport native. FreePPP is recommended for 68K Macs.
2 -> Download and decode the version of Hotline appropriate for your Mac:
You can obtain Hotline in one two formats--the PowerPC Native version or
the 68k variation. Hotline can be obtained at a number of locations,
which are linked at <http://netspace.net.au/~hinks/>. After downloading,
decode the file with Stuffit Expander.
3 -> Follow the instructions listed in the Read Me files. Then, you're
done!
Hotline is $25 shareware. While there is currently no disabling mechanism
if you do not pay the shareware fee, you are morally obliged register.
You can do so easily with the included Kagi Shareware Register
application.
Need more information about Hotline? Visit the official web site:

Motorola cuts Mac clone prices -- again
For the second time in two weeks, Motorola slashed prices on
its StarMax computer family, adding fuel to an already raging
price battle among makers of Macintosh clones.
The cuts -- as much as 10 percent on nine StarMax desktop and
minitower models -- were announced on Thursday and take effect
immediately. The MacOS, PowerPC-based systems now range in
price from $1,249 to $2,695.
Motorola officials acknowledged the escalating climate of jabs
and counterpunches among Mac-clone makers and Apple itself.
"Prices in the Mac market are finally being sharpened on the
wheel of competition," said Dennis Schneider, vice president
and general manager of the commercial products division at
Motorola Computer Group, in Tempe, Ariz. "More system choices
within the marketplace allow customers to receive greater
overall value."
In the last week alone, Mac-clone vendors Umax and Power
Computing levied heavy price cuts on their entire product
lines. Likewise, Apple itself trimmed prices across the board
three weeks ago. And last week, Motorola cut prices on its
StarMax systems -- followed by Thursday's reductions.
The new StarMax prices include the following:
- The StarMax 3000/200 minitower has been reduced in price
from $1,895 to $1,695.
- The StarMax 4000/160 desktop has been cut in price from
$1,895 to $1,595.
- The StarMax 4000/200 minitower has been reduced in price
from $2,995 to $2,695

Apple clarifies transition plans
Apple Computer and Metrowerks finalized an agreement Friday for
Metrowerks to create development tools that will help port
MacOS applications to Apple's planned Next-based Rhapsody
operating system. Metrowerks' planned $399 CodeWarrior Latitude
will use a porting library, gained during the company's recent
acquisition of The Latitude Group. The library ports
applications that were originally created in MacApp or
PowerPlant or with MacOS APIs and adds multithreading, memory
protection, and pre-emption. Metrowerks predicts that porting a
typical finished Mac application should take about a month.

Svi redom? Za sada samo Power Computing.
> Apple Computer and Metrowerks finalized an agreement Friday
Nešto slično Apple i sada, pametno, radi i

E, RADI!!! Ja sam lepo danas, pošto sam nedavno formatirao hard i

Evo kako glasi vest:
More Mac-clone vendors to license BeOS
Macintosh-clone makers Umax and DayStar have both made informal
agreements to license the Be operating system, which they plan
to offer as an alternative to the Macintosh operating system,
the chairmen of the two companies said here on Thursday.
Umax and DayStar have yet to finalize their agreements with Be
Inc., which is now seeking system makers to license its BeOS,
but both said they are confident the deals will go through.
The disclosure of the agreements follows the announcement
yesterday that Motorola will bundle its StarMax line of
PowerMac systems with the BeOS.
No,

to moglo izvesti.

nju definitivno nema. S druge strane, pored očigledne prednosti u vidu
preemptive multitaskinga, zaštićene memorije, stabilnosti, BeOS deluje
Be Inc., očigledno, nije
jula ove i januara i jula sledeće godine). BTW, rečeno je da Mac emulator radi
i na Power Mac verziji BeOS-a.

Apple Pledges Support for DVD-ROM Drives, Shows First Prototype
At the recent MILIA 97 conference in Cannes, France, Apple demonstrated
the first DVD-ROM Macintosh prototype and announced support for the DVD-
ROM format throughout most of the Apple Macintosh product line. DVD is a
new industry standard for consumer electronics and computers that
delivers vastly superior audio and video compared to current CD-ROM
technology. DVD-ROMs--which look identical to CD-ROM discs--can hold up
to 18 GB (gigabytes) of multimedia data, including any mixture of CD-
quality sound, AC-3 surround-sound information, MPEG-2 video, and
computer binary data. The current CD-ROM format holds only 680 MB of
content, with no built-in provisions for surround sound or MPEG-2 video.
As part of a MILIA presentation, Apple also noted that the first DVD-
enabled Macintosh system could appear as soon as late 1997, with several
new PowerBook and desktop models expected to be shipped with DVD-ROM
drives by early 1998. "Just as Apple was the first computer vendor to
standardize on CD-ROM ten years ago, we now expect to take a leadership
position with Macintosh and DVD-ROM," said Carlos Montalvo, vice
president of Apple's Interactive Media Group.
The Apple DVD-ROM prototype, a modified Performa 5400 computer,
culminates several years of Apple research and development on DVD
technology, in collaboration with leading Japanese and European consumer
electronics companies.
At MILIA, several leading DVD developers and premastering software
vendors, including Sonic Solutions (Novato, CA), Sumeria (San Francisco,
CA), Short Cinema Journal (Venice, CA), Wired (Mountain View, CA), and
Daikin (Novato, CA) pledged their support for Macintosh as the ideal
premastering and content delivery platform for rich multimedia DVD
titles.
Apple also announced its plan to create a DVD web site in the near
future. The Apple DVD web site will serve as a clearinghouse for
interested consumers and developers on the latest DVD information, as
well as provide links to third-party companies with DVD solutions for
the Mac OS.

PowerBook 3400 Is Fastest Notebook Computer, Has Optional CD-ROM Drive
Sporting such features as a 240 MHz 603e PowerPC processor, a hot-
swappable expansion bay that can contain a CD-ROM drive or a third-party
Zip drive, a 12.1-inch color screen, a four-speaker sound system, and
built-in Ethernet and modem connections, the new PowerBook 3400 is
poised to meet the needs of Macintosh customers in business, higher
education, science, engineering, and design who require the most in
performance, multimedia, and communications from a notebook computer.
"The introduction of the PowerBook 3400 represents a significant
milestone in the revitalization of the PowerBook line," said Dale
Fuller, vice president of PowerBooks at Apple Computer. "Apple is out to
regain leadership in the notebook market. With the PowerBook 3400, we do
just that by fulfilling the needs of performance-hungry mobile
professionals."
"With up to 240 MHz of processing power and a 12.1-inch screen, the
PowerBook 3400 is the first true portable to market that can be
considered a viable desktop replacement," said Tim Bajarin of Creative
Strategies.
The following summarizes the PowerBook 3400 series notebook computers:
* Performance: By combining a number of key technologies such as
industry-standard PCI architecture, PowerPC processors, DMA (direct
memory access), faster EDO (extended data output) memory, and lithium-
ion batteries, Apple has created a high performance PowerBook that
allows users to run processor- and graphics-intensive applications on a
mobile platform.
* Multimedia: The PowerBook 3400 comes with a 12.1-inch active-matrix
SVGA display, unique four-speaker sound system, PCI video controller
with hardware acceleration, industry-standard VGA connector for 16-bit
video out, 16-bit stereo in/out, zoomed video support, and software-
based MPEG-1 decompression. All of these features combined provide users
with one of the most robust systems available today and the key elements
they need to create and present multimedia-rich information.
* Communications: The PowerBook 3400 series features a number of
communications capabilities, including built-in 10 Mbps Ethernet and
33.6 Kbps modem. The innovative RJ-45 connector located off the system's
backplane is designed to accept either Ethernet or telephone cable for
access to network or modem lines. Asante Corporation designed the
combination Ethernet and modem PCI card specifically for the PowerBook
3400 series and expects to sell it as a stand-alone product for
upgrading the base configuration. Other communications capabilities
include IRTalk, an infrared standard for easy, wireless file sharing
that allows for communications between PowerBooks and a network by means
of a 1-megabit per second IrDA infrared connection. In addition,
PowerBook users will now have access through the serial port to GeoPort
technology for ISDN and analog modems.
* Expansion: A flexible expansion bay on the PowerBook 3400 accepts a
variety of modules, including a floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, additional
hard drive, magneto-optical drive, internal AC adapter, and Zip drive
(expected to be available in the second quarter of 1997 from VST
Technologies). In addition, expansion bay modules from the PowerBook
5300 and 190 series can be used with the PowerBook 3400. For more
expansion options, two PC Card slots can support two Type II or one Type
III card. The PowerBook 3400 allows users to "hot swap" modules while
the system is running, unlike other notebook systems that require users
to shut their computers down or put them into sleep mode before they can
remove an expansion bay module.
* Software: To provide a complete, mobile computing solution, all
PowerBook 3400 models come configured with Mac OS 7.6 and a variety of
productivity, communications, and compatibility software. This software
includes Claris Organizer for tracking schedules and contacts, Apple
Internet Connection Kit software (including Netscape Navigator 3.0,
Claris Emailer Lite, Fetch, NCSA Telnet, and NewsWatcher), Apple Remote
Access for easily connecting to a desktop or network from a remote
location, Macintosh PC Exchange for reading and writing PC-formatted
floppy disks, Macintosh Easy Open and MacLinkPlus (from Dataviz) for
reading and translating PC-formatted files, ForeFront Group's WebWhacker
2.0 for browsing the Internet off-line, and WyndMail wireless e-mail for
wireless mobile communications. In addition, the PowerBook 3400 also
comes with Virtual Pool from Macplay, a 3-D pool game.
The PowerBook 3400 is also the first PowerBook to be shipped with Apple
Location Manager, a software utility that allows users to save system
settings that are location dependent, including settings related
networking, printer configurations, time zones, file sharing, sound,
auto-open items, and the Extensions Manager. Once a defined location is
set up, a user simply selects that location and the system automatically
reconfigures itself to reflect the chosen environment.
* Configurations and Availability: The 180 MHz and 200 MHz PowerBook
3400 configurations are available immediately in the United States.
Additionally, these configurations are expected to be available in
Europe in late March, and in Japan sometime in April. The PowerBook 3400
240 MHz configuration is expected to be available worldwide in April.
Apple expects demand for the PowerBook 3400 to be high and availability
to be constrained through the end of March.

Power Macintosh Computers Offer Power, New Features, Aggressive Pricing
Apple Computer recently introduced a new line of Power Macintosh
computers for business, professional publishing, and Internet/media
authoring. The new line includes a high-performance Power Macintosh
running at 233 MHz, as well as fast 200-MHz systems at prices ranging
from approximately U.S. $1,700 for a general-productivity system to
approximately U.S. $4,700 for a top-of-the-line multiprocessor system
for professional graphics. The high-end systems in the new line feature
an innovative tower industrial design that makes it easy to add new
components--a design that is unmatched by any other PC manufacturer.
All of the new systems are designed to run future versions of the Mac OS
as well as Apple's next-generation Macintosh system software--code-named
Rhapsody. In addition, most of the new computers are designed with the
processor on an easily removable card that can be replaced with a faster
processor card when Apple or a third-party manufacturer makes one
available.
Here is a summary of the Power Macintosh families and options offered:
* The PowerPC 9600/200, 9600/200MP, and 9600/233 computers include
PowerPC 604e processors running at 200, 200, and 233 MHz, respectively,
and should be popular with graphics and multimedia professionals. These
computers include a new video card--the IMS Twin Turbo 128 M4A--for
improved graphics performance. The PowerPC 9600/200MP offers the same
capabilities as the PowerPC 9600/200, but with the addition of a second
200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor. This second processor makes the PowerPC
9600/200MP a multiprocessor (MP) computer that, when used with specially
adapted software, can perform tasks up to 50 percent faster than its
single-processor equivalent.
* The Power Macintosh 8600/200 computer includes a 200 MHz PowerPC 604e
processor and is popular for media authoring. It includes such features
as a 12x-speed CD-ROM drive, high-quality video input and output, a

Digital Media Professionals 32 Percent More Profitable on Macintosh
Platform
According to a recent study, digital media professionals who work on
Macintosh computers--including professionals working in desktop
publishing, multimedia, digital video, web authoring, and animation--
were 32 percent more profitable than the industry average of their
counterparts on all other hardware platforms (UNIX, Windows, OS/2, Sun,
and Silicon Graphics).
The study attributes the workers' higher productivity on the Mac OS
platform to its higher system reliability, superior integration of key
technologies, and smoother work-flow process--all of which allowed them
to do creative work instead of "digital administrivia." The workers
attributed lower productivity on other platforms to problems that
included the following:
* Dysfunctional plug-and-play peripherals, such as mass storage,
printing, and display devices
* Irregular processing of fonts and images, notably PostScript
typography and EPS files
* Rework due to color inconsistencies with display color palettes,
RGB-to-CYMK conversions, and color proofs
* The need to tweak multimedia playback elements, such as music,
animations, 3D objects, and video
Macintosh professionals of comparable levels of skill produced media
projects 18.6 percent faster (based on total hours) than Windows users,
and they individually earned, on the average, 24.2 percent more personal
income than their Windows counterparts.
These results are based on data from a survey of 24,875 media-producing
professionals over a five-year period. The survey was conducted
independently by GISTICS of Larkspur, California. GISTICS, an
independent research firm, performed the data analysis at Apple's
request and made its contacts with media professionals by using the
following methods: random mailings to creative professionals, names
drawn from magazine subscription lists, customer lists from media tool
vendors, and names drawn from industry trade associations.

Subject: !! - The Ultimate Mac at Work Guerilla Tactic
Message-ID: <199702200057.QAA13446@scv3.apple.com>
Keyword: Advocacy, Guerilla Tactics
This action item is from:
Michael Kankiewicz, <michaelk@acsu.buffalo.edu>
Here's the ultimate guerilla tactic that many of you might find hard to
swallow:
* Buy your own Mac for work! *
I work for a very large department at a very large university, and we are
strictly Windows based. I got so fed up with my bajillion megahertz Dull
Plentium (because it's plentium dull) that I put together a used IIfx
system with my own $, total cost (including a 14" monitor), $400.
I was showing one of our support people (a strict Windows guy) how cool
the Mac is. After about 10 minutes, he said "Wow, that's what Windows
should have been." And when I told him that the machine is going on seven
years, he couldn't believe it. And when I showed him how easy file
mangement is on this 7 year old Mac, he flipped. And when I showed him
Netscape 3 running on this 7 year old Mac he just shook his head. And
when I showed him live digital video with the QuickCam on this 7 year old
Mac that cost me only $300, he went through the roof.
Now he's asking me about him buying a Mac for his young kids, to
"supplement" their Windows machines. Any guess what'll happen once they
get a taste of Mac? :)
I know shelling out your own money for a machine at work is hard to
swallow, but look at it this way:
1. There are *lots* of great, ridiculously inexpensive used Macs out
there.
2. If you're like me, you spend more time at a computer at work than at
home.
3. Take it from me, it'll make your work environment a hundred times more
pleasant, and even fun. I can't wait to hear it chime up every morning.
When I told a fellow employee I was buying my own Mac to bring in to
work, she said "But who's going to support it?" I just laughed out loud
and said "You'll see."

This was actually a very common guerilla tactic at one time -- people
would bring their Macs from home and it would infect companies like a
virus. BTW, if you need to justify the cost to yourself (especially if
this isn't tax-deductible as a business expense...any tax attorneys out
there?), just imagine the time and effort you'd save through avoiding
WinTel related hassles. How much is your time worth? How about your
sanity? :)

A snippet:
"Too often, in my view, Apple deserves much of the blame for its problems
with the press because it provides insufficient, unclear or downright
misleading information. But that's not the case with respect to the crux
of the recent spat, its cross-platform aspirations for
Rhapsody. Aside from some annoying terminological sloppiness, its
spokespeople have been telling a clear and consistent story for nearly
two months now. Best of all, what they're saying makes sense."

"I read your On Computers column 'PowerBook puts bloom back on blemished

article about Apple. I was waiting for the negativity and inaccuracies
that seem to fill the pages of computer publications of late.
"I wanted to thank you for surprising me with an objective and
open-minded look at Apple's new PowerBook. I hope that you will continue
to write about Apples successes and failures in the same way. It is only
when writers approach topics as you did that the readers benefit."

wanted was a fair chance. It looks like we're finally starting to get

Alex Fernndez, <alexfer@cibeles.com>
As you know, the European Community is going through an economic unifying
process, that includes the use of a common currency (called Euro). The
Euro should be in use before the next century, and a public contest has
been held to choose the design of the 100 Euro note.
And guess what? The winners were FOXCS Disseny, a small _Mac-only_
company in Barcelona, Spain. Their equipment now includes a PowerMac
8200, but the actual design was made with an "old" LC 475.
Quoting (and translating) FOXCS team, 'The difference between Macs and
other computers is the feeling they give. If you stand before Windows
'95, it clearly is an imitation, you lack something. Mac is something
else: you are relaxed, you don't get lost; the machine works for you and
not the other way around'.
(The full story appeared in the February issue of MacWorld Spain.)
Wouldn't it be nice if in a corner of the 100 Euro note it said 'Made
with a Mac'? The larger part of 300 million people would be seeing it! ;-)

What an opportunity! Imagine being able to make money with your Mac, and
not get arrested for it! :) Now, I wouldn't suggest doing this
(especially as I have no idea what the laws are in Europe in regards to
currency defacement), but wouldn't it be great if every European Mac
EvangeList wrote in "Made with a Mac" on the corner of 100 Euro notes
when they're released? ;-)

On his Thursday show, well-known talk radio host (and Mac aficionado!)
Rush Limbaugh was discussing the recent news of the Active-X applet which
could be used to clean out web surfers' bank accounts.
If you haven't heard, a hacker club demonstrated the applet, which would
be automatically downloaded to users' computers when they visited certain
web pages. The applet would then search for a copy of Intuit's Quicken,
and use Quicken's on-line banking features to transfer the victims' bank
balances to another account.
The first caller of the second hour of the program explained the
technical details of Active-X and this destructive applet. Apparently,
only non-U.S. versions of Quicken would be susceptible. He also explained
that only MicroSoft Internet Explorer users could be affected, since
Netscape Navigator doesn't contain the appropriate Active-X hooks. When
(finally!) he explained that the applet would only run on Windows
computers, Rush exclaimed, "Ah! ANOTHER reason to buy a Mac! Maybe the
guys with 8% market share know something!"

Hi, Mac campers! After the constent barrage of negative press over =
the past few months, it looks like the first glimmers of sanity have =
begun to seize the press. It starts, of course, with the Mac press, =
where people like Don Crabb are starting to talk some sense into =
people:
<http://www.macweek.com/mw_1108/op_crabb.html>
"Whether Apple is run by Apple, by another company, or by its =
customers and shareholders directly, the Mac standard of computing is =
simply not going to vanish anytime soon. So instead of focusing on =
allthe machinations that will continue to emanate from Cupertino =
while the fight to "save" the company goes on, let's focus on just =
how successful the Mac and Mac OS has been for a lot of people =8B =
and how we can make it successful for us, as well."
Over at MacUser, Andy Ihnatko has some blunt (and good) things to say =
about change (and mentions two of my favorite television shows at the =
same time):
<http://www.zdnet.com/macuser/mu_0497/columns/ihnatko.html>
"Folks, the hard truth is that no matter how the transition to a new =
Mac OS is done, it's going to really, really sting. You're going to =
lose cherished and dependable apps and features. You'll gain new ones =
that are just as good if not even better, but nonetheless the entire =
Mac community is going to be ripping a big Band-Aid off its hairy arm =
with this one. Let's accept that. We all want a transition to be =
perfect, but that's impossible; we should just be happy that it =
happens. Let's have a new, modern OS. Then we can complain about how =
utterly inadequate it is and work on improving it, but the crucial =
item here is that we need a new OS under the hood. You can't fix what =
you don't have, and if the Mac OS isn't updated soon, people who want =
the OS to be just like System 7.5.5 forever will get their wish."
Let's see if the rest of the press picks up on the new optimism -- or =
at least takes the time to actually investigate the news before they =
report it as fact.
Kick butt!

Happen to catch "Nextstep" on Discovery channel Friday night? Touting
innovative technology, they demonstrated Microsoft's speech recognition
software. For only $299 (includes free microphone ($5 value?!)) You too
can own this gem! How many years has Plaintalk been around?! The show
should be renamed "Backstep". Feel free to check out feedback page:

Digital Guy Sez:
Funny you should mention speech recognition. I just spent an hour
tricking up my Mac with PlainTalk 1.5 to accomplish a long time goal of
mine -- full speech control of the majority of my administrative chores.
I downloaded PlainTalk 1.5 from the Apple Speech Web Site:
<http://speech.apple.com/ptk/>
I installed it and took it on a spin. On a 6100/60 performance was
pretty snappy, so much so I went on a search for some goodies to script
some speakable items. A Scripting Addition called AutoType allows you to
create scripts that type characters (including Command, Option, or
Control keys) as if they were typed from your keyboard:
<http://www.wrldpwr.com:80/osaxen/autotype_osax.html>
I could create absurdly simple scripts that could be used across a whole
set of applications by typing a command key sequence, instead scripting
directly to each application. Here's an example script for my "Undo"
speakable item:
AutoType "z" holding "Command"
That's it! Save the script as an "Application", and make sure "Never
show startup screen" is checked. With Speech Recognition on I say "Undo",
and the last action is undone within the current application. If the
"Undo" menu item is not active, nothing happens. Using things like
TypeIt4Me and OneClick I can create very complex macros and scripts
specific to each application that can be triggered by a common command
key combination. This reduces the number of speakable items, which
improves performance. Application switching is done by dropping an alias
into the speakable items folder (or selecting an item and saying "Make
this item speakable", and it's done for you :).
I've been using speech recognition to do real work all day now, and it's
not only useful, it's REALLY cool. I can't wait to try this on my
8500/180 at home!
$300 for speech recognition? For no additional cost (the Microphone's
included with every Mac too :) I can say "Sign" and the following happens:
Kick butt!

Subject: "Can Anyone Save Packard Bell?"
Message-ID: <199702231552.HAA19958@dnai.com>
This reprint is from:
Scott Kelby, MacToday@aol.com
CAN ANYONE SAVE PACKARD BELL?
>From the Mar/Apr issue of Mac Today Magazine (http://www.mactoday.com) by
Scott Kelby
The other day, while reading another article designed to scare the pants
off potential Apple customers and/or shareholders, I started wondering
what life would be like if I somehow got a writing gig at a PC magazine.
Besides having to wear the dorky-looking outfit, wire-rimmed glasses, and
pocket protector, I'm certain that during my first day on the job I'd be
handed a secret dossier that would include the closely guarded manual of
rules for writing any article that mentions Apple Computer. It would
include certain guidelines to follow, like "Any good news on Apple must
be followed by the word 'but' and then a direct reference to either: (a)
their small market share, (b) any quarterly loss in the past five years,
or (c) Microsoft's dominance.
This manual provides PC-worshipping journalists with guidelines for
"selective reporting" where only damaging facts and figures about Apple
are allowed. The latest amendment to their manual is how they should
refer to the Macintosh operating system. It must always be referred to as
"outdated." And even though Windows 95 tries to emulate the Macintosh
operating system, it must never, under any circumstances, be referred to
as outdated. That would be blasphemy.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the Macintosh press
needs a similar manual for writing about PC manufacturers. With that in
mind, I decided to write a few news blurbs on some of the PC
manufacturers so they'd get a little feel of that "selective reporting"
from a Macintosh point of view.
CAN ANYONE SAVE PACKARD BELL? Heavy competition and unexpectedly low
holiday sales are taking their toll on some PC manufacturers and Packard
Bell, once a shining star among PC clone makers, has fallen on hard
times. The beleaguered company is struggling amidst rumors of bankruptcy,
suffering a dwindling market share, and staggering from being rated at
the bottom of the heap for consumer loyalty (when polled earlier this
year, less than 35% of Packard Bell owners would buy another Packard
Bell). The public may be asking, "Can anyone save Packard Bell?" A recent
article detailing Packard Bell's woes in the December 30 issue of
Business Week magazine noted that "Many experienced consumers shied away
from Packard Bell, citing its reputation for shoddy quality and
indifferent service and support."
That same article noted that Packard Bell "has watched its sales and
market share slowly slide since last January." It pointed out that in the
first ten months of '96 alone, Packard Bell had already lost 8% of their
market share. In a business where market share is everything, a dramatic
drop like this could spell doom. Couple this with lagging sales (they
fell $1 billion short of their sales estimate) and a widely held
perception of shoddy quality and poor customer support, we can't imagine
a scenario where they'll be able to survive in the long haul. Packard
Bell, unlike rival Apple computer, which won the J.D. Power & Associates
award for overall customer satisfaction and has over 27 million fiercely
loyal customers, has quite an uphill battle to survive. And if they don't
survive will anybody really care__or will they just buy a cheap PC clone
from somebody else?
CAN ANYBODY SAVE GATEWAY 2000? Recent television advertisements by
upstart PC clone maker Gateway 2000 have raised serious questions about
the company's future. The advertisements point to sales figures of only
one million units, whereas rival computer maker Apple Computer had sales
figures of nearly four times that amount in the same time span. This
would put Gateway 2000's market share below 1.75% which, as any industry
analyst would tell you, means instant death in the highly competitive PC
clone market. With sales of only 1 million, it seems clear that Gateway
2000 has four times the problems of Apple Computer. Which brings us to
the question, "Can anybody save Gateway 2000?" Of course, if Gateway
doesn't survive there's always IBM.
CAN ANYTHING SAVE IBM? After surviving the largest single-quarter loss in
the history of business, IBM, once the leader in personal computers, has
seen its market share fall well behind industry rivals like Compaq and
Apple Computer. IBM, once the dominant PC maker, has seen its position
erode as PC clone makers and Apple Computer have seized the lion's share
of the desktop PC market. And their fiasco with OS/2 is better forgotten.
One bright spot in IBM's personal computing efforts is the success of the
PowerPC chip, developed in a joint effort by IBM, Motorola, and Apple
Computer, which is currently the fastest personal computer chip on the
market, speeding past competitor Intel's fastest offerings.
CAN ANYTHING STOP APPLE? After stunning the computer industry by bouncing
back to profitability from a $750-million quarterly loss earlier in the
year, Apple Computer just posted a comparatively modest $120-million loss
for its most recent quarter. The loss, which occurred during what has
been called one of the weakest fourth quarters for computer retailers in
years, is a far cry from Apple's problems of last year when the board was
forced to oust then-CEO Michael Spindler. In fact, a significant part of
Apple's recent loss was caused by the fact that high consumer demand for
Apple's new 1400 series PowerBook computer created a massive backlog of
orders. Although analysts have predicted Apple's demise every year since
1984, they're consistently wrong.
Although Apple does face some challenges, clearly there are many
companies that would envy Apple's position as the nation's fourth largest
personal computer maker, with over $1.8 billion cash in the bank, sales
of nearly four million units a year, a $200 million backlog of orders for
new units, and the number one ranking in consumer loyalty in the
industry. I guess the 27,000,000 Apple enthusiasts are just glad they
didn't buy a Packard Bell.
###
Also, check out Mac Today's newly updated "Mac Facts" page, designed as a
clear, concise resource for Mac users who want quick no-nonsense
Macintosh and Apple facts (ammo) to share with PC users who wouldn't
normally have access to this type of information. It features statistics,
quotes, and a host of Apple and Macintosh related facts and figures that
many will find fascinating. The Mac Facts page is found at

Naravno, onog trenutka kada Adobe napravi Photoshop for Be-on-Mac kako ga

From MacWEEK for February 24, 1997 by Kelly Ryer
Tokyo - Before a backdrop of scaffolding and metal girders, Apple CEO
Gilbert Amelio laid out a blueprint of his company's plans to the crowd
here last week at Macworld Expo Tokyo. In addition to the rollout of new
machines, his presentation held a surprise: a peek at QuickTime 3.0.
Version 3.0 will incorporate real-time rendering effects, new animation
and alpha-channel compositing capabilities, and support for vector
graphics. The forthcoming software will also stream virtual-reality
content over the Web and add support for more data formats, including
Video for Windows.
According to QuickTime engineer Peter Hoddie, who wowed the crowd with a
demonstration of an animated goldfish moving into and out of a rippling
fishbowl, QuickTime 3.0 will ship simultaneously for Windows and Mac
platforms "a little bit later this year."
Hoddie also showed QuickTime Sprite Export, an Xtra plug-in for
Macromedia Director. With it, users will be able to convert a Director
movie to a QuickTime movie. Apple's plug-in will compress video,
animation and sound data during the conversion, making it possible for
Director content to be played over the Web with any browser that
supports QuickTime.
At a time when much of Apple is under reconstruction, the scaffolding
motif for Amelio's keynote was not lost on attendees, who appeared
satisfied with Apple's OS strategy and new hardware lines. Playing to
the crowd, the keynote featured a demonstration of the Japanese-language
version of Mac OS 7.6, complete with OpenDoc and Cyberdog.
Amelio hinted at future directions for 1997, confirming that Apple plans
to integrate FireWire into some high-end desktop machines. He also
touched on Apple's Digital Video Disc (DVD) plans, saying that Macs
would play a role in DVD authoring later this year.
In a separate keynote, Executive Vice President Ellen Hancock said work
was moving ahead on Rhapsody, Apple's next-generation OS, and noted that
a prototype of the Blue Box compatibility layer is already running Adobe
Photoshop in Apple's labs.
On the bustling show floor, the Mac market seemed healthy, with an
estimated 180,000 show goers crowding around nearly every booth.
Brightly dressed dancers performed the Macarena to the accompaniment of
Spanish guitars at the Xerox booth, while bleach-blond teen-agers
jostled with blue-suited businessmen to try out the new PowerBook 3400c.
Apple also introduced its QuickTake 200 digital camera (see 02.17.97,
Page 4), which faces a competitive market in Japan, where digital
photography is popular. However, onlookers seemed impressed by its
presentation capabilities and the high level of integration with the
bundled software.
Among the clone makers showing their wares, Akia Corp. displayed
aggressive prices and flat-panel displays for its MicroBook Power
604e/225 (see 02.03.97, Page 70). Pioneer Electronic Corp. gave
attendees a taste of DVD technology in its booth. Both vendors said they
had no immediate plans to target the U.S. market.
mac.2209kmilan,

paralelno, i kopiram fileove.

It starts like this:
"OK, that's it. Put a sock in it, knock it off, cut the crap: Let's move
on.
This Apple horror story of the day reportage death spiral that we are all
caught in is nonsense. Look, folks, Apple is either:
A) going to come out of its current problems as a stronger, leaner,
tougher, and profitable company or
B) going to be bought by someone else who will try to make it profitable.
There is no third option here. The company won't go bankrupt because it
will be sold, merged PR dismantled long before then."

I've been using 2.0 for a few days now. It's remarkably better, and 1.1
was already a lifesaver for me. The highlights of 2.0 for me are:
1) Single data file for messages--using less disk space and permitting
MUCH faster searches. Now I just copy the entire Emailer folder between
my Jaz drive and 1400 instead of synchronizing individual files.
2) Keeping a copy of an outgoing message in a folder as well as sending
it. For example, if I want an archive of all the outgoing EvangeList
postings, I can store a copy in the EvangeList folder in my filing
cabinet as I simultaneously send it.
3) Hiding message logs. My mail actions generate a lot of message logs.
Now I can directly file these message logs or turn them off for specific
mail actions. This means my in box is a lot less cluttered.
4) Unlimited account management. 1.1 could only manage 5 Internet, 5 AOL,
5 CIS, 5 AppleLink, and 1 Radio Mail account. These limits have been
lifted--except for Radio Mail which is modem specific.
5) Multiple windows can be open at one. 1.1 had a tab interface where you
were in either the in box, out box, filing cabinet, or address book. Now
all of these windows can be open at once.
The bottom line is, quite frankly, 2.0 makes Macintosh THE email computer
platform. Check it out!

5,000 usually quoted). I contacted the author of the article for more
details:
According to Carey Nachenberg, of the Symantec Antivirus Research Centre,
there are:
- 10,000-11,000 DOS viruses
- 12 Windows viruses
- 35 Mac viruses
- 200+ macro viruses; 70-90% are cross platform
- 6 Unix viruses

This tidbit is from:
Jon L. Gardner, <jgardner@kairosnet.com>
Over the years, I have watched many people struggle in vain to set up
dual monitors on various Windows platforms (mainly for CAD
purposes)...the only decent solution I've seen thus far consists of a
very expensive dual-port video card that essentially just tricks Windows
NT (an expensive proposition in itself) into thinking it is driving a
single double-wide monitor. This means, of course, that dialog boxes,
menus, desktop wallpaper, etc. are always split in two.
Unfortunately, most departments in my company are "standardizing" on
Wintel (one of these days I'll say, "I told you so!"), and one department
is in the process of swapping out their aging Macs for Pentium boxes.
Just for grins (and to get back some of my own), I pulled a video card
and monitor out of a "discarded" IIcx and popped them into a still-in-use
IIci, just as a "dual-monitor surprise" for the fellow who uses it.
You should see the faces of the Windows flunkies when I show them this
ten-year-old dual-monitor Mac and tell them that all I had to do was plug
in the card, plug in the extra monitor, and boot it up!
Since Windows still can't handle even the simplest tasks, how can anyone
possibly expect it to handle difficult ones? What better way to make this
point than a highly visible dual-monitor setup? You can get used 8-bit
NuBus video cards for less than $40, and used 13" color monitors are
cheap too...

best-selling software titles for your business at no cost? Go to the
Microsoft Office for Macintosh home page at
<http://www.microsoft.com/macoffice/> and sign up today.
And, while we're on the subject of Microsoft in the Mac community, here's
a quick overview of what we've been up to lately:
Microsoft released Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for the Macintosh at
Macworld Expo San Francisco last month. At the show, we also won the
Editor's Choice award from MacUser magazine for having the best browser
on the Mac. To download a free copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0
for the Macintosh, check out <http://www.microsoft.com/ie/>
In addition, we announced Microsoft FrontPage 1.0 for Macintosh at
Macworld SF. It was selected as a Hot Pick in the MacWeek daily report
during the show. A limited-time beta version is free for download at
<http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/> and a retail version will be
available shortly. Look for a posting to the Evangelist when the retail
version is available in stores.
On the Office front, Microsoft recently released an enhanced edition of
Microsoft Office for Macintosh version 4.2.1 that now includes new
Essential Tools for Small Business. This enhanced release is available in
stores today. You can learn more about the new tools included with Office
(as well as enter to win a free copy) in the Essential Quiz for Small
Business at <http://www.microsoft.com/macoffice/contest/>.
Also, for the first time with any Microsoft Office product in the United
States, Office with Essential Tools for Small Business will ship with a
new line of small business Apple Power Macintosh computers later this
year. Look for a posting to the Evangelist when the new line is available
in stores, or check out the Apple Small Business Web Site for more
information on small business activities: <http://smallbusiness.apple.com>
Finally, Microsoft recently announced the creation of the Macintosh
Business Unit. This is the first time at Microsoft that a group has been
dedicated solely to developing Office for the Macintosh. The Mac BU
consists of over 100 developers, testers, etc., and is--to the best of
our knowledge--the largest development group focusing solely on Macintosh
software development outside of Apple. The Mac BU is currently hard at
work on completing a great Macintosh version of Office 97, which will be
released later this year. Check <http://www.microsoft.com/macoffice/>
occasionally to find out more about Office 97 for the Mac.

Metrowerks to Develop Rhapsody Porting Tools
Apple just finalized a development agreement whereby Metrowerks will
create new software development tools that facilitate the transition
>from the current Mac OS to Apple's next-generation operating system,
code-named "Rhapsody." Metrowerks will deliver a Rhapsody-hosted version
of CodeWarrior and introduce a new product, CodeWarrior Latitude, that
will allow developers to more rapidly port Mac OS applications to
Rhapsody.
CodeWarrior Latitude, which will be released later this year, will
include a porting library that allows Mac OS applications to be ported
to UNIX-based operating systems. Metrowerks will retarget this porting
library to Rhapsody so that programmers can take Mac OS applications
that use Mac OS application programming interfaces (APIs), MacApp, or
PowerPlant, link them with the Latitude library, and then deliver
applications that take advantage of advanced Rhapsody services, such as
preemption, memory protection, and multithreading, without having to
rewrite base code. Using CodeWarrior Latitude, most developers should be
able to complete their first port of a stable Mac application to
Rhapsody within a month.
CodeWarrior Latitude is the most recent step that Metrowerks is taking--
in concert with Apple--to help developers quickly and easily support
Rhapsody. Not only will Metrowerks deliver a full CodeWarrior solution,
complete with compilers, programming tools, and debuggers for both
operating systems, but each phase in Metrowerks' strategy is focused on
creating a smooth transition from the Mac OS to Rhapsody.
First, Metrowerks will ensure that its compilers will build Rhapsody
applications when hosted in CodeWarrior for Mac OS and Apple's Project
Builder for Rhapsody. Metrowerks expects to have Objective C support
added to the CodeWarrior C compiler hosted in CodeWarrior for Mac OS by
the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in May 1997.
Next, Metrowerks will implement interoperability between Objective C
objects, and C++ and Object Pascal objects in September 1997. Metrowerks
will deliver these new CodeWarrior programming tools as part of its
regular CodeWarrior for Mac OS subscription at no additional charge to
subscribers.
Finally, the CodeWarrior IDE, programming tools, and compilers will be
ported to Rhapsody. Metrowerks' CodeWarrior IDE will be hosted on both
Mac OS, as currently available, and on Rhapsody. The first developer
release of CodeWarrior for Rhapsody is scheduled to coincide with
Apple's initial release of Rhapsody.
Once the porting of the CodeWarrior IDE to Rhapsody has been completed,
both CodeWarrior for Mac OS and CodeWarrior for Rhapsody will build the
following:
* Mac OS applications for 68K and PowerPC
* Rhapsody applications for PowerPC
* Windows 95/NT applications for x86
* Applications for embedded platforms including the Sony
PlayStation and U.S. Robotics' Pilot organizer.

CFM-68K Runtime Enabler Fix (Beta) Available
Late last November, Apple notified users of 680x0-based Macintosh
computers that, under certain rarely occurring circumstances, its CFM-
68K Runtime Enabler did not function properly and that they should
discontinue using it until Apple could fix the situation. (For details,
see Apple Developer News #35 Supplement, Dec. 2, 1996.) The removal of
this file caused owners of 680x0-based Macintosh computers to be unable
to use several Apple technologies, including OpenDoc, Cyberdog,
LaserWriter 8.4 and 8.4.1, and the Apple Media Tool. (Power Macintosh
owners are not affected by the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler bug.)
Apple engineers have been working on the problem and will soon have the
situation fixed. A beta version of the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler extension
can now be downloaded from this web site:
<http://macos.apple.com/macos/cfm-68k.html>
The final CFM-68K fix is expected to be final by mid-March; it will be
posted at the above site as soon as it becomes available.

Mac OS Licensing Strategy Is Working, Says Dataquest
This week Dataquest released personal computer market share numbers, and
their Mac OS specialist, James Staten, noted that "licensing the Mac OS
is starting to pay off for Apple Computer." According to Dataquest's
U.S. 1996 cumulative shipment statistics, Mac OS-compatible computer
vendors shipped enough Mac-compatible systems to buoy the Mac OS
platform's 1996 market share. Looking at Dataquest totals for the year,
without its licensees, Apple's share of the U.S. market was 6.7 percent,
putting it in fifth place. Add the clone makers, and the share rises to
7.8 percent, good enough for fourth place in the rankings. Dataquest
predicts that the impact of licensing will grow even more in 1997, as
the number of Mac OS-compatible vendors in the market rises into the
double digits.
One factor that should stimulate sales of Mac OS computers in the near
future is the round of price cuts that occurred among top Mac OS
computer manufacturers this week. Here's a summary of recent price
reductions:
* Apple introduced a new line of Power Macintosh and PowerBook products,
all hitting aggressive price and performance benchmarks.
* Umax took the lead at the low end of the Mac OS-compatible market,
offering a model with an 80-MHz 603e CPU priced at $1,299. This is now
the lowest-priced Mac OS-compatible system available.
* Power Computing has said it will reduce prices as much as 21 percent
on its PowerTower Pro, PowerCenter, and PowerBase lines.
Staten commented on this overall trend: "We see these moves as very
positive for Apple and the Mac platform. Products such as these at
prices that offer parity or advantage over x86 rivals should encourage a
strong replacement market in 1997, which could allow Apple and the Mac
platform to grow [its market] share this year."
The full report on this topic, titled "Mac Market Less Gloomy Thanks to
Licensees," is available for $95 from Dataquest at this web site:

Inače mali i veliki

Microsoft releases Mac Personal Web Server 1.0
Microsoft on Tuesday made available for free download a
Macintosh and PowerMac version of its Personal Web Server (PWS)
technology to allow Mac users to publish documents on the
Internet and LANs.
The goal of personal Web servers is to help small businesses,
company departments, and home PC users easily create and
maintain Web sites. Microsoft released its PWS for Windows 95
in October.
The Personal Web Server does not require a dedicated server.
Instead, users share HTML and FTP files across intranets or the
Internet the same way they share folders on a network. Also, it
enables remote administration from a control panel.
The PWS supports CGIs, ACGIs, and MOS plug-ins, and has
built-in support for image maps, server push, directory
browsing, and Active Server Pages.
Personal Web Server 1.0 for the Macintosh is available for

Avie: "In addition, we'll be making the APIs and the tools available
cross-platform. So as you're developing for Rhapsody, you're not limited
just to Apple's customer base. You can now also go after NT-based systems
or even sell the software for PCs running Rhapsody."
MacUser: "So you're saying you'll be able to develop a Rhapsody
application using the tools that will be available, and it will be a
simple matter to run that same application on either NT or Macintosh?"
Avie "That's absolutely correct."

A Wintel PC user I know--let's call him Joe--posted a message to a local

fellow user group member--let's call him Carl--replied he was having a
similar problem and invited Joe to attend a county-wide PC user group's
meeting with him to get some help.
Well, Joe was fairly busy with one thing or another and didn't want to
take the time to attend the other user group's meeting. He told Carl he
felt he could live with the problem for a while.
Carl's acerbic reply to Joe was classic (and I quote the entire reply
verbatim):
"PC's require total commitment. You need to either adjust your
priorities, or buy a Mac."

Subject: Tidbit - A Cool Kid Using Cocoa
Message-ID: <199702272036.MAA35094@scv2.apple.com>
This tidbit is from:
Grant Hutchinson, <g.hutchinson@shaw.wave.ca>
I am forwarding this email from a friend of mine with her kind
permission. I found this to be an inspiring story that shows off both the
creative potential of kids and just how cool and easy to use Apple
technology really is. Let's see a ten year old do this on a Windows box.
...............................................................
JessiAnn, my 10 year old niece extraordinaire, is getting a new Mac: A
Performa 6400/200.
She just won Grand Prize, 5-11 age group, in Apple's Cocoa World of
Winter Contest:
<http://cocoa.apple.com/cocoa/contest/winners.html>
She obviously gets her brilliance from her favorite aunt! She gets all of
her unpleasant qualities from her mother (my little sis), of course!
For those that aren't familiar with it, Cocoa is way cool software, in
beta release from Apple. The current version can be downloaded from the
Cocoa web site. It's a completely graphical interface for developing
animations, simulations, and interactive pieces for the web or as
stand-alone players. Sort of a junior Director (much less powerful, of
course - but also much easier.) It's meant for kids, but I think a lot of
non-techie adults are going to love it too. I was really impressed with
it. We all agreed it was the most fun since KidPix, and what was that, 5
years ago?
<http://cocoa.apple.com/>
If you want to see JessiAnn's entry, you have to have a Mac (the final
version of Cocoa will support viewing from that other platform). You can
see it on the Cocoa Web site, but only if you have the Mac Cocoa Plug-in
for Netscape which you can download there. Or, gloating aunt that I am,
you can download the self-running Mac version (about 175k) from:
<ftp://members.aol.com/liltype/jessi.sit>
Jessi's all excited. We found out last week, but it took a while to
really sink in that she'd won the grand prize and anxiously awaiting her
new Mac. She's ripped a picture of the 6400/200 out of a catalog, and
it's on her bulletin board, next to her old LC II, which will be moving
on to it's fourth owner. It was mine. When I upgraded, it went to my sis;
when she upgraded, it went to JessiAnn's room, and now it's going to
their neighbors.
JessiAnn built her entry while spending the weekend at my house. I was
impressed with it, and knew it was really good for a kid, but - wow - I
never thought she'd win the big prize!
One last JessiAnn observation:
In January, we took her to a Cleveland Indians Press Tour Luncheon. She
is a complete baseball nut. Her next Cocoa World, in the planning stages,
is about baseball... That was the day Kenny Lofton announced that he was
going to check out free agency, and the Cleveland TV reporters were all
over the place. She got interviewed about the "Lofton Situation," and was
on both the FOX and CBS local news reports that night.
In February, she wins this contest.
When we asked what she was going to do next, she replied, "I want to go
to Disney World." When asked how she was going to do that, she said, "I'm
working on it." We are all frightened. Very, very frightened...
My Niece Kicks Butt!

If you'd like to read an interesting interview with Woz that provides a
stark contrast to the perspective of Steve Ballmer, check out:
<http://cgi.sjmercury.com/revolutionaries/wozniak.htm>
In a nutshell, this interview explains the difference between Apple and
Microsoft.
Thanks,
Guy

Subject: Tidbit - Independent Film Makers Asked about Mac on MSNBC
Message-ID: <199702282031.MAA27674@scv2.apple.com>
This tidbit is from:
Brad Reed, <breed@amospress.com>
There is an interesting site at The Site, which is apparently part of
(gasp!) MSNBC that features Low Res videos from independent producers.
Part of the site features a standard interview about how the videos are
produced. The site can be found at:
<http://www.thesite.com/1096w4/play/play220_102396.html>
The last question is such an obvious slant, and sort of comes as a
sandbag. But even in the lion's den, these artists speak the Truth:
The Question:
"Most of the filmmakers we spoke to are using Macintosh systems. Any
reservations about using a platform that has floated in and out of
trouble in the last few years?"
Sample answer (from Keir Serris):
"Don't get me started on Windows 95, which, as they say, has the look and
feel of Macintosh 84. It's no coincidence that the Macintosh is the
platform of choice for artists of all kinds, while every pencil-pushing
fluorescent-lit drudge in the world hunches over a PC."
Of the seven artists interviewed (two were in collaboration), five
clearly state no "reservations" about using Macs. One describes himself
as a "platform atheist" (apparently he doesn't believe platforms exist?).

Subject: Tidbit -- Another Celebrity Sighting!
Message-ID: <199702282134.NAA14298@scv3.apple.com>
This tidbit is from:
v0!d, <voidmstr@primenet.com>
I am a WWW developer with a celebrity client--satirist/actor/writer Harry
Shearer.
Harry plays 20 characters on The Simpsons (Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned
Flanders, Rev. Lovejoy, etc.), hosts a nationally-syndicated radio
program (Le Show), became a cult hero as bassist Derek Smalls of
mock-rock band Spinal Tap, and lots lots more.
Last year, working with Harry on the site was a huge pain in the butt.
Harry called himself a confirmed "cyber skeptic"---no computers for
him!-- and used to *fax* me material for the web site, stuff he had
*typed* out. Ugh!
Then he got a PowerBook, and his life (and our WWW site) changed.
Now Harry has finally revealed all in the Web edition of "The New York
Times" <http://www.nytimes.com/library/cyber/week/022297shearer.html>:
"His site has changed considerably since the days when Shearer had to fax
its contents to his Web page designer, Voidmstr, because he had no
computer of his own. At first written in the third person, "it was
weirdly descriptive rather than personal," he recalled.
After he bought an Apple PowerBook and became an avid Web user (every day
he reads through a half-dozen newspaper sites from three continents and
listens to the New Orleans radio station WWOZ), he overhauled his pages
to their current first-person, audio-laden design. Carried on the server
of Progressive Networks, the publisher of RealAudio software, Shearer's
site now anchors the company's Timecast Comedy Channel..."
The Harry Shearer site <http://www.harryshearer.com> is therefore 200%
made on Macintosh---from Harry's PowerBook to my PowerMac 8500.

Starving for more Rhapsody specifics? MacUser interviews Avie Tevanian,
the head of the Rhapsody project, at:
<http://www.zdnet.com/macuser/onlinecol/tevanian.html>
Avie "That's absolutely correct."

raspodeli ovako zauzetu memoriju.

mac.2265madamov,

RAM Doubler veoma retko piše po disku, i to najviše zazume do 1 MB prostora.

memorija to uvek traži.

više o tome) i PC (MagiCPC - 5x86/133 - brzina običnog ST-a)
