From: ragga.joint@jhu.edu To: Shell Subj: 160MHz and 180MHz macs are out!! Date: 30 Apr 1996 06:42:15 Area: comp.sys.mac.misc BBS: EUnet They're from Power Computing. I just got this mail. ------------------------------------------------------- Important News from Power Computing Corporation: Earlier today, Power Computing Corporation introduced PowerTower and PowerCenter - the world's fastest, highest performance, most reliable and affordable PowerPC 604 MacOS systems in history. And the early results are in: "Power Computing has fielded some killer machines (PowerTower and PowerCenter) and Apple will be hard-pressed to catch up." - MacUser Magazine, July 1996 "If you're looking for maximum performance, no current Apple system can match the PowerTowers." - Macweek Magazine, April 29, 1996 PowerTower - based on the 604 PowerPC running at 180 or 160MHz -is the world's fastest MacOS system ever, with prices starting at just $4,195. PowerTower is more than twenty percent faster and twenty percent less expensive than Apple's top-of-the-line PowerMacintosh 9500/150. PowerCenter makes 604 PowerPC computing a reality for the masses. With prices starting at just $1,895, PowerCenter sports an upgradeable CPU daughtercard with 120, 132 and 150MHz 604 microprocessors. In fact, the PowerCenter not only out performs Apple's new PowerMacintosh 7600 and costs just a fraction of the price - the PowerCenter 604/150 holds its own against the new PowerMacintosh 8500 and 9500/150's. The PowerCenter 604/150 which starts at $2,995 with 16MB of RAM, 1GB Hard Drive, 256K L2 Cache, onboard video, extended keyboard and bundled software is more than $1,450 less expensive than the 8500 and nearly $1,700 less expensive than the new 9500/150 for comparable CPU performance. Power also announced upgrade plans for PowerCurve customers -- starting today, PowerCurve 601/120 owners can purchase a 604/120 upgrade daughtercard for just $295.

Subject: *** IBM licenses MacOS. <http://www.chips.ibm.com/news/macos.html> some snippets: --- May 6, 1996 Fishkill, New York -- IBM today announced it has reached agreement with Apple Computer to license the Mac OS operating system, a step both companies expect will significantly open and enhance growth of the Mac OS marketplace. --- Datatech (DTK) Enterprises Co., LTD and Tatung Co., manufacturers of a range of computer equipment, will be among the first companies to announce their intent to sub-license the Mac OS from IBM. DTK is based in the U.S. with operations in China, Taiwan and Europe. Tatung is based in Taipei, Taiwan. Also today, the first third-party system logic products and firmware for PowerPC Platform systems are being announced simultaneously by the following companies: -VLSI Technology, Inc. of San Jose, Calif. is announcing its Gold Eagle support logic solution for PowerPC Platform systems. According to VLSI, these board-level components, which are in the final stages of development and testing, will help systems manufacturers build Mac OS computers offering clear price and performance advantages over machines based on other hardware/software architectures. -FirmWorks, of Mt. View, Calif. is announcing immediate availability of Power Firmware, the first open firmware product for PowerPC Platform systems. Firmware is the microcode, or computer instructions, that reside in read-only memory (ROM). FirmWorks says this product significantly reduces the time and engineering resources needed by OEMs to build systems that can fully support the booting of multiple operating systems such as the Mac OS, Windows NT and others. --- The licensing agreement allows IBM to sub-license the Mac OS anywhere in the world and in any market segment. Systems manufacturers can tap potential opportunities in emerging Asian markets and differentiate their systems in U.S. and European markets. "We see significant Mac OS growth potential worldwide," said John C. Gleason, vice president and general manager of worldwide marketing and sales, IBM Microelectronics, "particularly in Asia and Japan for high-volume notebooks, sub-notebooks and entry desktop systems." mac.1060 mikis,
Apple issued a press release Monday stating that IBM has licenced the Mac OS for bundling with "a wide variety of hardware systems, based on the current Power Macintosh architecture or on the PowerPC Platform specification (CHRP)". In addition, the press release stated that "IBM intends to sign sub-licensing agreements for the Mac OS with Datatech Enterprises Co., LTD (DTK) and Tatung Co., both manufacturers of a range of computer equipment (see separate announcement from IBM, released today). "The licensing agreement includes versions 7.5.X of the Mac OS, access to the next major release of the Mac OS, and access to the 16 local language versions of the Mac OS that Apple has so far approved for licensing (U.S. English, UK English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.)." "The times they are a changin".

Popravio sam tastaturu! No, medjutim, elem, sada moj MAC radi kako treba i izmedju ostalog emulira Atarija 7 puta brze nego sto emulira Atari sam sebe. Sjajna stvar.

mac.1078 madamov,
The following press release moved over PR Newswire on Monday, May 13, 1996 at 7:43 AM, PDT. Apple Announces Apple Image Capture Platform Developer Platform Will Drive New Customer Uses WWDC, SAN JOSE, California--May 13, 1996-- As a pioneer in the computing industry, Apple Computer, Inc. continues to set the stage for creating new markets with new technologies. Apple today introduced the Apple Image Capture Platform and announced its intentions to license core components of this platform. With this announcement, Apple is once again poised to create a new industry it calls Personal Imaging. Apple defines Personal Imaging as the total user experience related to the capture of an image, including image editing and output. The heart of the Apple Image Capture Platform is Apple's QuickTime IC (Image Capture) technology. This technology combines a multi-tasking, realtime operating system with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) built specifically for image capture devices based on an embedded microprocessor. These APIs allow independent software developers, systems integrators and camera vendors the ability to create compelling customer solutions that don't require a computer, such as in-camera time lapse photography, direct connection to the Internet to share and transmit images, and in-camera filters. The APIs and tools are expected to be available for multiple host platforms, including Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. Designed as an open, modular platform, the Apple Image Capture Platform extends Apple's QuickTime architecture for displaying and storing time-based media on Windows-and Mac OS-based computers, ensuring easier adoption by the already large base of QuickTime developers. "I think we're on the brink of a revolution in personal imaging," said Dr. Terry Bailey, vice president of imaging and peripherals for Apple Americas. "We're providing a cross-platform foundation which we believe will ultimately drive the creation of a diverse range of new, innovative image capture solutions. And, licensing the technologies to camera vendors in particular, will give us access to a whole new market." Motorola's newly announced MPC823 chip includes technologies from the Apple Image Capture Platform, making it easy for developers to integrate the microprocessor hardware and imaging software to design innovative, customized applications for cameras and other image capture devices. This integration of hardware and software also allows developers to reduce the cost associated with storing images in the memory of a digital imaging device. It also provides an excellent business proposition for camera vendors, allowing each manufacturer to focus on their specific expertise in image science, optics, manufacturing, etc., while reducing the complexity of building more powerful next generation image capture devices. "Apple's commitment to the Personal Imaging market represents a positive move for consumers," said Bruce Chizen, vice president and general manager of Adobe Systems' consumer products division. "By leveraging the new Apple Image Capture Platform, developers will be able create compelling new applications, like Adobe PhotoDeluxe, that take advantage of next-generation digital cameras, exciting easy-to-use tools in the hands of end users. This could signal a tremendous breakthrough for customers," said Kristy Holch, president of MegaTrends Research. "It's akin to the 1985 introduction of the laser printer equipped with PostScript. The printer provided the environment for desktop publishing when combined with other items such as fonts and application software. The Image Capture Platform will allow developers to write applications directly to the camera to create compelling solutions that will let consumers get more out of capturing images." Some of these possible solutions include time lapse photography where a computer is not required. For example, a software script running in the camera will capture a series of images over time. The resulting images are grouped and packaged as a QuickTime movie for immediate viewing on a computer. Multiple images could also be "stitched" together to create a QuickTime VR panoramic movie for a virtual reality tour, reducing the expertise currently required to create such a movie. With the communications facilities enabled by QuickTime IC, another possible solution is enabled wherein a captured image is sent from the camera across the Internet directly to a printer for printing. Apple has applied for or is in the process of applying for more than 30 patents directed to the Apple Image Capture Platform. A developer release of the API, including sample code is expected by June and a Software Developers Kit (SDK) is expected later this summer.

Ja bih preporučio kupovinu Pantone Process Color karte negde u inostranstvu. Still it tickled my fancy... The May 1996 number of Australian PC World (still on the stands here in Oz) has a cover proclaiming 'Windows 95 at Warp Speed' (nothing to do with OS/2, BTW). The words 'Warp Speed' are streaming off a PC flying through space above a blue, cloud-covered planet with Win 95 screens for continents. A closer look at the 'PC' is revealing, however. Although all the trademarks and logos have been removed, the monitor is an Apple 17" MultiScan display and the CPU case is an AT-style Power 80 or Power 100. Perhaps we could interpret this as meaning the Mac OS is, in effect, what Windows 95 wants to be? :-) Regards, Brian Forte. ____________________________ Brian Forte Contributing Editor, MacSense http://www.macsense.com Internet: bforte@adelaide.on.net CompuServe: 72511,370 America Online: BNForte And if not now, when? I think such printers are rather scarce and therefore expensive. But there's a way to connect almost any PC-compatible printer to the mac: If it has a serial port you should consider using 'Chucks Printer Driver', which is able to print on EPSON and HP compatible printers. I think almost any printer in the world (even specialized ones that you need) can be used with this driver and a simple serial adapter cable. So this solution is the cheapest yet most functional one that you can get. Chuck's printer driver has the current version 1.3.0 (as far as i know) and is 20 $ shareware. The Digital Ocean remote products are the Manta series ($799) providing AAUI or 10BaseT connection to any Macintosh, and the Grouper series ($749), supporting LocalTalk connections for any legacy Macintosh or Newton MessagePad. Both products, initially offered in 915 MHz, provide wireless Ethernet connectivity to wired infrastructures through RoamAbout and WavePOINT Access Points. This makes it possible for Macintosh machines using either LocalTalk or EtherTalk to join PC-based machines in a wireless LAN that reaches across the enterprise. "This set of products serve an important need to organizations such as Carnegie Mellon University, which has a large installed base of Macintosh PowerBooks and is in the process of setting up a very large wireless infrastructure on its campus," said Alex Hills, Vice Provost & Chief Information Officer at Carnegie Mellon University. "WaveLAN and RoamAbout have the vast share of the wireless LAN market in the PC world, and this solution enables shops that already have or wish to install Lucent's or Digital's products to bring their Macintosh users on board," said Digital Ocean President Jeff Alholm. "It represents the first time that wireless LANs can be implemented across both platforms." Digital Equipment's RoamAbout Access Point offers key bridging features such as protocol-independent bridging, address and protocol filtering and downline load capabilities. It is part of a fully manageable and scalable product set that can be used as either a standalone device or installed in Digital's MultiStack System, DEChub 900 MultiSwitch or DEChub 90. A complementary RoamAbout wireless LAN adapter line includes both PC Cards and ISA Adapters that use both the 915 MHZ and 2.4 GHz frequency bands and supports both frequency hopping and direct sequence wireless technologies. This gives customers the freedom to choose the wireless technology that best suits their mobility and application needs. Available in both 915 MHZ and 2.4 GHz versions, the WaveLAN product line includes the WaveLAN/PCMCIA card for notebook and portable computers, WaveLAN/AT card for desktop computers, WavePOINT access point, WaveAROUND roaming software, WaveMONITOR site installation/survey program and WaveMODEM wireless modem for OEM products. One of the key components of the WaveLAN product family, WavePOINT is a small, compact unit that enables Wave LAN and Digital Ocean stations to access devices on wired networks. WavePOINT can be easily installed on a desktop, ceiling, wall or in a wiring closet with the antenna outside. Features include integrated roaming, SNMP management, optional security, multicast delay, site survey tools and network administrator utility software with radio path diagnostics. Digital Ocean's Manta and Grouper remote stations are part of a complete product line that provides wireless support for Macintosh and Newton MessagePad environments through the company's Starfish II Ethernet Access Point. Starfish II offers an optional external antenna that can boost range to up to three miles. Manta and Grouper can be configured to interoperate with Lucent's WavePOINT and Digital's RoamAbout access points. Digital Ocean's wireless LAN family includes a fully-supported MicroCellular roaming function, radio diagnostic function, radio diagnostic and site survey software, network administrator's software and optional security features. Digital Ocean also produces a family of ruggedized hand-held computers, based on the Newton platform, that offers a variety of communication options for in-building and remote applications. Contact: Dean Dahlgren Phone: (708) 830-1113 Fax: (708) 830-1262 For Immediate Release Maxum Development Ships the MaxumPack - All the Essential Tools to make a Web server Dynamic, Interactive, Reliable, Secure and Fast Comdex, Chicago, IL-- June 3, 1996 -- Maxum Development Corp., a leading developer of commercial World Wide Web server tools for business and education, today announced the MaxumPack(tm) 1.0, the powerful applications set that makes your Macintosh(tm) Web site dynamic, interactive, reliable, secure and fast. "We strive at Maxum to create all the essential tools needed for a robust Macintosh-based Web site," said John O'Fallon, President of Maxum Development, "the MaxumPack is the best way to put all those cool tools into the hands of our customers." Maxum was the first developer of commercial interface tools for Macintosh-based WWW servers. Included in the bundle are current versions of all Maxum's shipping products: NetCloak(tm), NetForms(tm), PageSentry(tm), WebLock(tm) and RushHour(tm). "Maxum was the first out of the gate with commercial quality WebSTAR add-on tools, and is still setting the standard." says David Thompson, Director of Marketing, StarNine Technologies. NetCloak 2.0 extends the capabilities of a Macintosh-based Web server by adding a total of 45 commands for use in World Wide Web pages. It executes these commands "on-the-fly" as the Web pages are sent to the client. With it Web authors can customize their pages by: client domain, time, date, browser, referrer, username, password, access count, at random or by client-entered information. NetCloak dynamically serves graphics, text, hyperlinks and other HTML elements and includes advanced features like macros and high-performance caching. In their book Planning & Managing Web Sites on the Macintosh, Chuck Shotton and Jon Wiederspan award NetCloak "..the single most useful CGI application available for any HTTP server." NetForms is the Web server "back-end" that allows Webmasters to easily process information entered by visitors to create completely interactive Web sites. NetForms can take user submitted information and create a new HTML page, send an e-mail message, insert text into an existing page, and store the data for later processing by virtually any application (including databases, spreadsheets, text-processors, etc.). The Webmaster is in control of the submitted information; how the page is formatted, defining how they look, how the menus are kept, and even what words or phrases will be automatically linked. PageSentry 1.1, will monitor any page, on any server, anywhere on the Internet. PageSentry allows the Webmaster to create "sentries" that perform complete HTTP (Web protocol) file transfers. The files are checked for valid content and, in case of failure, the Webmaster is notified. By performing real HTTP transfers, PageSentry verifies that every aspect of the Web server is functioning, including the operating system, the TCP/IP stack, the Web server itself, and even CGI applications. Maxum's WebLock is a performance and security utility incorporating RAM based file caching and security based on the Mac(tm) OS built-in File Sharing and Users and Groups database. Unlike security schemes based on Realms, which require complex naming conventions and can have undesirable side effects, WebLock allows you to simply click on the file folder you want protected. Maxum's RushHour is a software-based Web server graphics accelerator for the Macintosh which eliminates performance bottlenecks that are typically responsible for significant slow downs of Web server. RushHour runs in conjunction with your existing Web server software and allows you to dramatically improve overall throughput at your site even on extremely busy sites that serve large files. With graphics comprising the majority of most Web server traffic, RushHour is capable of producing a "three to ten fold" improvement in performance. The MaxumPack carries a list price of $695.00 (SRP $1025) with a special introductory price of $ 595.00 through July 31st 1996. The MaxumPack will be available on May 31st from Maxum Development's Web site at: <http://www.maxum.com/>, by phone at (708)830-1113 or through any registered Maxum Reseller. Current owners of Maxum products may upgrade to the MaxumPack and receive discounts for past purchases of: Purchases ... Before Dec 31, 1995.. After Jan 1, 1996 NetCloak $100.00 $150.00 NetForms $100.00 $150.00 PageSentry N/A $100.00 RushHour N/A $250.00 Discounts apply to a maximum of $400 off the introductory price. In addition, purchasers of the MaxumPack will receive one free year of upgrades on all products purchased. Founded in 1991, Maxum Development is a leading developer of commercial World Wide Web server tools for business and education. Maxum products, NetCloak and NetForms, were the first commercial interface tools for Macintosh-based WWW servers and are now industry standards. All Maxum products are designed to enhance the function and performance of Web sites by making them dynamic, interactive, secure and fast. Maxum, the Maxum logo, NetCloak, NetForms, PageSentry, WebLock and RushHour are trademarks of Maxum Development Corp. Katz Media AS Signs Worldwide Licensing Agreement of Apple's Pippin Technology to make the world's best multimedia technology available to "the rest of us." New-Pippin based devices to be launched in Europe during the fall of 1996. CANNES, France--June 5, 1996--Apple Computer, today announced that Katz Media had signed a worldwide licensing agreement to ship products for the European market later this year, based on Apple's Pippin technology. This technology establishes an entirely new category of products called information appliances which allow easy, affordable access to any kind of digital information through a standard television set. In the fall of 1996, Katz Media intends to ship a CD-based console along with a broad range of exciting localized titles in selected European markets. Pippin products are derived from Apple's Power Macintosh hardware and software, and deliver the world's best multimedia technology - whether online or CD-ROM based - without the complexity or the cost of a typical multimedia personal computer. Equally important, because Pippin products are designed to work in a standard living room environment, everyone in the family can access and enjoy the best that cyberspace has to offer. "Today, only about 7% of the population in the world has a computer or has access to one. With the Pippin technology, we want to bring the world of communication and information technology to the fingertips of "the rest of us," the non technical users who think that computers are still too expensive and complex," said Satjiv Chahil, Apple's senior vice president of Corporate Marketing. "We are creating new opportunities for millions of TV set-owners, bringing multimedia rich information and the information superhighway right into their living rooms. All of this, with easy to use multimedia and internet capabilities never before so readily available. Katz Media is an ideal partner to bring new exciting Pippin based products and titles to the European market," he continued. The Pippin platform has been designed to bring Apple's unparalleled ease-of-use to a wide range of customers seeking information solutions across many different markets. Based on the robust PowerPC RISC microprocessor, the Pippin platform benefits from a market supported by the rich Macintosh development environment, a wide variety of multimedia titles that deliver easy-to-operate family entertainment and education at a lower price than today's existing products," Chahil said. "We have selected the Pippin platform because it takes advantage of the most exciting qualities of simplicity and ease of use of the Macintosh and of the Internet, in a low-cost, reliable architecture. This will enable us to bring a catalog of approximately 100 CD-ROM titles at the time of the launch of our Pippin-based product. With our Pippin products, users will be able to go from zero to the Internet in less than five minutes, with products that are easier to use than an audio CD player," said Thomas Virden, Vice President of Katz Media AS. "There is a huge worldwide market for Pippin-based devices because of their ease of use and connectivity to TV sets. We will promote our Pippin based products as entertainment and productivity appliances for consumers with a $25 million investment," he concluded. Katz Media intends to bundle its Pippin device with a keyboard, a modem and a hand-held controller. Additional peripherals such as Zip drives, floppy drives, hard disks and other devices will be available. Katz Media will also develop relationships with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deliver Internet access right out of the box. Later on, Katz is also planning to provide infra-red keyboards rather than cord connected ones and offer versions of its Pippin based product as Intranet appliances for companies who need real time information systems. Katz Media plans to introduce titles in the following categories: a) games, entertainment and edutainment b) enhanced music c) education home advice d) encyclopedia and other reference works e) personal productivity f) home banking g) home shopping. Katz is actively contacting and recruiting developers and publishers to port titles to the Pippin platform. "For nearly two decades, Apple has provided solutions designed specifically for schools," said John Hanay, senior product manager at Apple. "The Apple Network Administrator Toolkit continues that tradition by combining a powerful suite of tools that educators have been asking for with the ease-of-use students and teachers have come to expect from Apple." Doug Snow, education technology facilitator for Floodbrook Union School in Londonderry, VT, has used the Toolkit on the school's network of more than 100 Macintosh computers. "The only way to deliver technology access is to make it so easy and so invisible that teachers and students don't even have to think about it," said Snow. "The Apple Network Administrator Toolkit enables me to effectively - and invisibly - provide a seamless and smooth gateway to using technology as part of the learning process. This product will be on the wish list of anyone who manages a network, whether it's for a school, district or university campus." At Ease for Workgroups 4.0 At Ease for Workgroups 4.0, a new version of the popular Apple security and access management software, has been enhanced with significant new features that make it easier than ever to control access to computers and documents, and remotely manage all operations. A new central server-based file storage architecture enhances the student computing experience by allowing students to use different computers each day, yet always gain access to their files, applications and Internet preferences. New printer page limits and disk space quotas have been added so administrators can more effectively manage printing resources and costs. And version 4.0 is PowerPC native, enabling faster processing and increased functionality. With At Ease for Workgroups, the network administrator can control access to applications and workgroup resources, control which CDs students have access to, and prevent unauthorized users from deleting files or copying data or software from the network. The software also offers three different interfaces tailored for the experience level of the user. Apple Network Assistant The Apple Network Assistant is designed for managing distributed software and providing remote assistance. Its remote software distribution and deletion capabilities make it simple to keep all the Macintosh computers on a network up-to-date. From a single location, a new or updated application can be easily added to an individual Macintosh system, or broadcast to an entire computer lab. Using the remote system status report function, an administrator can gather details about RAM, available disk space, installed applications, system software and other information about individual workstations or servers, then make necessary changes. For example, if an inventory report reveals that a workstation is running out of disk space, the administrator can inventory that machine's hard drive and remotely delete duplicate or obsolete files and applications. The Apple Network Assistant also supports remote shutdown and restart of computers. Collaborative computing functions make the Apple Network Assistant ideal for use in the classroom or computer lab. A teacher can observe a remote user's screen, control the screen to demonstrate an action, view several screens at once, or share someone's screen with a group to create a collaborative computing experience. Additional features designed for classroom usage include a request function that enables users to signal the teacher for real-time help and telephony support. All the sharing functions are controlled from the teacher's Macintosh so the teacher always manages the level of collaboration in the classroom. A screen locking function also helps teachers manage computer use--it is ideal for starting and stopping tests or simply reverting student attention from the computer to the teacher. Apple User and Group Manager The Apple User and Group Manager simplifies import and export of users and group lists between AppleShare, At Ease for Workgroups 4.0 and First Class services, maintaining user names, groups and passwords across servers. Through an intuitive drag-and-drop interface, administrators can easily create new groups, change group members, compare groups, enable new users and perform other routine tasks. System Requirements, Pricing and Availability The Apple Network Administrator Toolkit requires a server system with AppleShare file server software version 3.0 or later. The client systems require any Mac OS-based computer (except Macintosh Plus), Mac OS version 7.1 or later, at least 4 MB of RAM and an AppleTalk network connection (Ethernet required for screen sharing). The administration system shares the client system requirements, except it requires 8 MB of RAM, a CD-ROM drive and a 640 by 480 pixel display (for viewing multiple screens). The three applications in the Apple Network Administrator Toolkit work together seamlessly and share one interface design. They can be installed separately but complement each other to provide a complete solution. The U.S. estimated retail price of the Apple Network Administrator Toolkit is $599 for a 10-pack; U.S. upgrade pricing for previous At Ease users is $499.The U.S. estimated education price is $349 for a 10-pack; U.S. upgrade pricing for previous education At Ease users is $149. The Toolkit is scheduled to ship in the U.S. in June and will be available from Claris Corporation, a subsidiary of Apple, and Claris resellers in the U.S. For more information about the Apple Network Administrator Toolkit, call 1-800-293-6617 in the U.S. or visit the Claris home page on the World Wide Web <http://www.claris.com>. It's titled "Betting on the Muse," and features several references to Macintosh computers, which Bukowski wrote on in the final years of his life. He died in 1994 at seventy-three, and, among other accomplishments, was the author of the screenplay "Barfly", which was eventually directed by Barbet Schroeder, starring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. "Betting on the Muse" contains the poem "look back, look up", which contains a list of things the author remembers from his early life, including Ty Cobb and the WPA. The poem reads, in part: "listing these things on my Macintosh computer with a 50-50 shot of seeing the 21st century..." Among Mac references in other poems, the poem "the trash can" is, in part, an ode to the Macintosh Trashcan. We're sorry you didn't make it to next century, Buk. There is always need for another writer who knows which OS is the most beautiful. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh?

InkWell Software Announces New PowerMac RIP for Lasergraphics Film Recorders For information contact: Travis Brown, Digital Orchard, Inc. (404) 325-5448 mail to: <info@inksoft.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May, 1996, ATLANTA, GA: InkWell Software, Inc. has released FilmMagic Pro, a Macintosh and Power Macintosh native imaging solution for all Lasergraphics Film Recorders. FilmMagic Pro is a Queue-based software product that images PostScript, EPS, PICT, and Scrapbook file formats to Digital Film Recorders at work station speeds. FilmMagic Pro brings unsurpassed power to the Lasergraphics Film Recorder line. PowerMac Native FilmMagic Pro is accelerated for Power Macintosh and takes full advantage of the PowerPC architecture to deliver blistering performance. FilmMagic Pro's high performance design makes it one of the best performing slide imaging solutions on the market as Harold Light from Light, Inc explains, "FilmMagic has proven to be much faster than any other Mac or DOS/Windows RIP I have used. As much as 10 times faster on complex files." Superior technology FilmMagic Pro has been designed to take the guess work out of imaging PostScript files. The software can automatically determine the best centering, scaling, and orientation of all files. Prior to FilmMagic Pro, users were required to know how each PostScript file was formatted in order to make appropriate adjustments in their imaging software. But now with FilmMagic Pro's user friendly interface they can just add the files to the imaging queue, press the start button and walk away. A Real WYSIWYG Preview An informative WYSIWYG Preview feature allows files to be inspected before they are imaged to film. When FilmMagic Pro generates a preview, the file is actually RIP'd by either the PostScript or QuickDraw interpreter. This ensures that the preview will show exactly what will image onto film when the file is processed for final output. Pricing and versions There are two versions of FilmMagic Pro for Lasergraphics that meet users needs. Each version is packaged by Film Recorder resolution and is priced accordingly: $895.00 for 4,000 line resolution and $1495.00 for 8,000 lines. Versions are also available for AGFA & MGI film recorders. Demos on Web Page InkWell is providing free demo's of FilmMagic Pro on their web page, <http://www.inksoft.com/~inkwell>. FilmMagic Pro is available with a 30-day money back guarantee. InkWell Software can be contacted through Digital Orchard, Inc., who handles sales and support for FilmMagic Pro. Digital Orchard's phone number is (404) 325-5448, fax (404) 325-5075.

Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 09:08:59 -0400 From: MacWay@aol.com To: macway@solutions.apple.com Subject: Mac Today--Misconceptions about Macs Message-ID: <960610090858_214129521@emout14.mail.aol.com> This tidbit is from: Scott Kelby, <MacToday@aol.com> This article was originally printed in Mac Today <http://www.MacToday.com>. Common Misconceptions About The Mac Editorial by Scott Kelby You know who seems to know the least about Macintosh computers? PC Experts. I'd always figured that these PC experts were pretty plugged-in to the computer market in general, but it seems like everything they know about a Mac they picked up on the street six or seven years ago. They've updated their modems, CPUs, RAM, and even their operating system, but they've neglected to update their knowledge about the one computer to which they owe their plug-and-play, mouse-driven, CD-ROM-using, window-clicking world-the Macintosh. So in an attempt to bring these PC experts into the 90s, I've compiled a list of the most common Apple and Macintosh misconceptions, complete with a reality check for each. Fax it to your PC acquaintances; it really spoils their day when they read good news about Apple. 1. THERE'S NO SOFTWARE FOR MACS There are thousands upon thousands of software titles for the Mac, but it really doesn't matter, since most people are going to use the same six or seven programs anyway. In fact, the top-selling titles on the PC platform are also the top-selling titles on the Mac: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, Adobe PageMaker, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Quicken, Netscape Navigator, etc. Even though the Macintosh Software Directory lists over 12,000 Macintosh software titles, chances are you're going to use only a handful of the most popular ones anyway. As the saying goes, "With the PC you've got 50,000 pieces of software you'll never use, and with the Mac there's 12,000 pieces you'll never use." The other side of this misconception comes from the fact that retail stores like Egghead Software, Babbage's, Software Etc., etc. carry hardly any Mac software. That's because the vast majority of all Mac software is sold by mail order. It's always been that way, it'll probably always be that way. Incidentally, there are over 500 software applications that are available only for the Mac and not available on the PC at all. Is that reason to celebrate? No. The reality is: you're probably not going to use any of those 500 either. 2. MACS AREN'T PC COMPATIBLE The truth is, Macs are the most PC compatible computers on earth. In fact, Mac users can pop an IBM-formatted disk into their floppy drive, read it, write to it, save files in PC formats, and even format a floppy disk in IBM format right from their Mac. This feature is built-in on Macs. Do PCs come with this same "compatibility?" Hell no! They couldn't mount a Mac disk with a saddle. What about PC apps? Mac users can run Windows or Windows 95 applications on their Macs using SoftWindowsr software from Insignia Solutions. You can even buy a Mac with an actual PC-board built right into the machine, so you can have both a Mac and a full-blown PC together in one box. The reality is: Macintosh is the only computer than can run Macintosh, DOS, and Windows applications on the same machine. 3. APPLE IS JUST A NICHE PLAYER IN THE COMPUTER MARKET It's true. Their tiny little niche has made them only the third largest computer maker in the world. IBM is just behind Apple as the fourth largest. Funny, I never really hear IBM referred to as a niche player, even though they sell fewer computers than Apple. I wonder why that is? Hmmm-only Compaq and Packard Bell sell more computers than Apple, and then just barely. In fact, during certain quarters of the year, Apple has outsold both Compaq and Packard Bell. This niche misconception is perpetuated by the national media's outwardly biased coverage of Apple. By the way, what kind of computers do most computer journalists use? Hmmm. Makes you stop and think. The reality is: Apple is one of the top three computer companies in the world and has a market share most Fortune 500 companies would kill for. 4. THE PERSON THAT DESIGNS APPLE ADVERTISING IS A SERIOUS SUBSTANCE ABUSER This is another widely held misconception, but it is also not true! I know, I know, you watch some incredibly lame "artsy-fartsy" Apple ad on TV and think, "The person that designed this ad must be on drugs," but I don't think that's the case. I think it's more that they've completely lost touch with consumers, so they create ads to please themselves, and hopefully a panel of judges that give out awards for "artsy-fartsy" ads. These ads are so artsy that it makes tracking their results almost impossible, so nobody can really be held accountable for their failure. What they've got working in their favor is the fact that most people that buy Macs are convinced by other Mac users to take the plunge. If you find someone that bought a Mac based solely on an Apple TV ad, look for their VW mini-bus and love beads; they can't be far behind. The reality is: The person in charge of Apple ads is not on drugs. As far as I know. 5. MACS ARE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE For years Macs were a premium item and considerably more expensive, but not anymore. Mac prices have now come down to where they are very competitive with most PC prices. But I want to warn you: when you head down to the computer store to compare price tags, the PCs may still seem cheaper at first. Until you look under the hood and realize that Macs come with standard features like a built-in sound card, a built-in video card, and built-in networking hardware and software. For many PCs, these features are add-ons which have to be purchased separately and then installed. The reality is: If price, not value, is your only consideration when buying a computer, maybe you should buy a PC. But if you're a bit more discerning, and want a computer with more standard features, you may have to pay a couple of bucks more. But at least now, it's just a couple of bucks. 6. MAC USERS ARE ARROGANT We're not arrogant. We're frustrated (and a little bit spoiled). We've spent our entire Macintosh lives defending our purchase. We've been faced with all the misconceptions listed here, the teasing, harassment, and outward media bias against Apple and the Mac for years, all the while knowing we're using the best computer on earth. Microsoft knows the Mac Operating System is the best, too! That's why Windows 95 looks and acts like it does. Believe it or not, I've actually had arguments with PC experts that try to convince me that Apple copied Windows 3.1! The reality is: we're tired of trying to make Microsoft-brainwashed PC users see the light. If that makes us come off as a bit arrogant, so be it. 7. THE MAC IS ONLY FOR GRAPHICS The Mac isn't only for graphics, it's just that it's great at graphics, and it's no surprise that it's the industry standard for professional graphic design. But the Mac rules in other areas. For example, PC users are often surprised to hear that the Mac has 50% share of the pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology, scientific, and engineering computer markets. The Mac also dominates the MIDI and music industry, and is the industry standard for digital video production. And needless to say, the Mac has the lion's share of the educational market in America as well. The reality is: a Mac is for whatever you need it for: accounting, word processing, graphics, music, engineering, multimedia, or surfing the Internet. 8. APPLES'S GOING OUT OF BUSINESS The national media have been consistently wrong about Apple's demise and I can't image that people still put any faith in them. It would be like a sports odds-maker who consistently picks the wrong team every single time, for nearly 12 straight years. You'd think after a while you might lose a little faith in his ability to predict the future, but PC users line up to hear the news. The fact is, Apple may get bought out, or merge with another company, but their going out of business is pretty unlikely. Here's an Apple stat most PC users would find surprising. In the Fortune 500 listing of America's largest businesses, Apple took the 114 spot (ahead of household names like McDonald's and Federal Express). So where does the Fortune 500 list find Microsoft, the computer software mega giant? About 105 spots behind Apple down at number 219. Is that surprising? It shouldn't be, since Microsoft is only a $5-billion company, and Apple is an $11-billion company. The reality is: It could be much worse for Apple-they could be Packard Bell. 9. SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS ARE FLEEING THE MAC MARKET Another misconception. Been around for years, it's just totally wrong. Granted, Apple had done a totally lame job of working with and supporting developers of Mac software. They know that; that's why there's Guy Kawasaki and Heidi Roisen. They're refocusing Apple's attention on developers, and it must be working, because Apple's most recent Macintosh software developers conference had a record-breaking attendance. You now also see more and more PC software developers putting both a Mac version and a PC version of their software on the same CD-ROM. They're catching on to the fact that there are 56,000,000 sales possibilities. The reality is: There's never been more Mac software than there is right now. Well that's it. These common misconceptions about Apple and the Mac have been developed over nearly a 12 year period, so don't expect PC users to change their long-held beliefs overnight, regardless of what the facts and figures show. The reality is: nobody needs Apple to succeed more than the PC user. And luckily for them, it will. ### Read the rest of this month's Mac Today Magazine issue at <http://www.MacToday.com> or in the Mac Today forum on AOL (keyword: MacToday). email: <MacToday@aol.com>.

Nemaju svi novije verzije procesora, 7200 i 7500 još imaju PowerPC 601, dok 8500, 9500 i 7600 imaju PowerPC 604.

Date: Fri, 14 Jun 1996 17:09:45 -0400 From: MacWay@aol.com To: macway@solutions.apple.com Subject: Savvy Consumer Article Message-ID: <960614170944_328430291@emout07.mail.aol.com> This tidbit is from: <crogers@teclink.net> (Charlie Rogers) Are Apples Good for You? Answers to those nagging questions about the folks who make Performas By Deborah Branscum Macintoshes have always appealed to people who don't consider themselves particularly technical. That's not surprising, since Apple pioneered the concept of plug-and-play machines that are simple to use and easy to upgrade. But now some of the families who might benefit most from the Macintosh Performa worry about the wisdom of buying one. And no wonder: Although most of the media roar has died down, press accounts early this year made it easy to believe that Apple was not long for this world. The company's recent hefty losses and the drops in its stock prices rightly concern investors and company executives. But they don't mean that this $12 billion company is down for the count. Apple is far from dead. If you're about to buy a new family computer, Apple's troubles may be raising questions about whether you would be better off buying a Windows PC. There may be good reasons to buy a Windows PC for your family, but Apple's health as a company shouldn't be high on the list. To help give you a sense of the state of Apple, here are responses to the most common queries I've been asked about the company. Q: Will Apple stop selling home computers? I've heard the company will no longer sell inexpensive Macs. A: Company executives say Apple remains committed to the home market, one of the areas in which the Mac has been most successful. The company does plan to reduce the number of models it offers for the home, James Buckley, president of Apple Americas, told me. He said that during visits to retailers last fall, it quickly became apparent that sales reps, consumers, and Apple employees were confused about the differences among the many Mac models available. Although this streamlining may reduce the number of choices available, it should also clear up the confusion consumers have faced when deciding on which Mac best suits their needs. Q: If I buy a Mac Performa now, will Apple go out of business and leave me stranded for service and support? A: The probability of Apple going out of business and abandoning customers is close to zero, according to analysts who closely follow the computer business. And Mac owners should expect to be supported even if the company is acquired or involved in a merger -- although Apple's new chief executive officer, Gilbert Amelio, has made it clear that the company plans to remain independent. Apple's certainly no champ in the corporate arena, but sales are strong in the publishing, home, and education markets. The company still has a larger share of the education market than any other computer maker. According to Quality Education Data, 58 percent of K-12 computer purchases during the 1995-1996 school year will have been Macs. Apple is also the top computer maker represented at colleges and universities, and more students own Apples than any other brand. Why do Apple's sales in education matter? They simply underscore that you can expect Apple to remain in business for some time. Q: Does the company have a future? Is it working on any new technologies? A: It's impossible to predict how well the company (or any company) will be doing in five years, but Apple's new CEO appears to have renewed employee morale and helped energize work on future products. Later this year, you will see a new version of the Mac's operating system and more Mac clones, among other developments. The next version of the Macintosh operating system, nicknamed Copland, is expected to be out by the end of this year. Some of the interface improvements will be especially useful for families. The operating system will allow multiple users to set individual preferences, for example, so the desktop and applications can look a particular way for each member of the household. You will have considerable control over your children's workspaces on the computer and be able to structure their access to menu items, applications, folders, and the Trash Can. In February, Motorola announced it had licensed Apple's operating system. Motorola is the first large company to do so, and the action revived Apple's flagging and half-hearted licensing efforts. Motorola will build its own Mac clones, and it will also sell to other companies computer components that run the Macintosh operating system. That means you may have an opportunity to buy low-end Mac clones later this year as well. Q: The overwhelming majority of personal computers use Intel chips to run Windows software. Are there any advantages to buying a Macintosh Performa? A: Despite the introduction of Windows 95, the Mac maintains its reputation for the best operating system overall. In one leading computer industry publication, for example, the Mac got the highest mark from testers who compared Windows 95, OS/2 Warp, Windows NT, and the Mac. Need more reassurance? Last March, the industry types who belong to the Software Publishers Association also gave the thumbs-up to the Mac and judged it superior to Windows 95. For the test, a computer magazine editor assembled a Hewlett-Packard machine using Windows; a 10-year-old boy did the same with a Performa. The 10-year-old completed his list of eight tasks in just over 17 minutes; the editor using Windows took 28 minutes to finish. Apple also offers great service and support. Performas consistently rank among FamilyPC's highest-rated multimedia machines. Apple's history of support is sound as well; after the company stopped selling its Apple II computer, it offered tech support and parts for another seven years. Q: Won't my choice of software be limited if I buy an Apple computer? Aren't developers abandoning the Mac? A: Certainly some software makers no longer develop for the Mac or develop for Windows first. So there are Windows applications that are not available for the Mac (just as there are about 900 Mac-only programs). But because of Apple's strong presence in schools, software companies such as Microsoft, Claris, Br+derbund, Maxis, and many others say they remain committed to the Macintosh platform, so you can expect to find plenty of software that meets your family's needs. Many multimedia titles are actually developed on Macs, which have a loyal following among graphics professionals and multimedia developers, among others. What you do give up if you buy a Mac is access to a variety of business software programs and games -- two areas in which the Mac is not as strong as Windows. Q: Even if buying a Mac now is safe, shouldn't I wait to see how the company does? A: Like other computer companies, Apple introduces new models about twice a year, so you should wait to make a purchase if you want a high-performance machine that should meet your needs for several years. But if you want a new computer now, it's a good time to buy a Performa. Because of Apple's problems in forecasting sales, the company began the year with a $1.9 million backlog in inventory that must be sold. Until the backlog disappears, you can expect some great prices. Here's one example: Apple has teamed with Sears to offer a "Bring Learning Home" promotion that benefits schools as well as consumers. Sears is offering a Performa 6116CD and Stylewriter 1200 bundle for the bargain price of $1299. At press time, that represented a savings of roughly $400 over nationally advertised prices. Keep in mind that the Bring Learning Home bundle is old technology; it includes only a double-speed CD-ROM drive and a low-speed 14.4-kbps modem. But that may be adequate for some families, and parents who buy the Sears bundle can help participating schools by donating their proofs of purchase, which the schools can then redeem for free Apple products for classroom use. The program runs until June 20. Q: Are other computer companies more stable than Apple? A: Apple faces serious challenges in rebuilding profit margins and market share. But it is hardly alone in having problems. In fact, computer companies often go through boom-and-bust business cycles. For example, according to Business Week, AST Computer "has been plagued with endless reorganizations and revolving-door management," and the last time it made a profit was March 1994. Although Packard Bell's sales were up last year, analysts believe that the company lost money and has cash-flow problems (Packard Bell denies the allegations). Even blue-chip IBM has been a notable flop in the personal computer market, with disappointing sales of its home machines. It's impossible to predict whether Apple's reorganization and new strategies will be successful. The company may not last forever, despite the cries of die-hard fans and employees. But Apple's Performas should be a viable option for some time to come if your family is looking for a solid, easy-to-use computer. Deborah Branscum welcomes your comments. The Chicago Bulls Win With Macintosh! The Chicago Bulls, 1996 NBA Champions have a secret weapon, the league's most sophisticated computerized video coaching system based on Macintosh and Newton. In a secure dedicated room next door to the locker room at the United Center, walls are filled with rack-mounted Macs digitizing the games' video feed from multiple camera angles in real time. Like a scene from mission control, a team of specialists sit in front of a wall of monitors switching the cameras. Another group operates three Macs with 21" touch screens running a custom front end that allows them to log each play, for each team, along with player, location on the court and outcome. This database is correlated to the SMPTE time code of the digital video to provide instant random access of each play that needs to be analyzed. A Newton is used on the bench to log scenes that coaches are interested in and dumped into the database. At halftime, while in the locker room, several Macs connected to a 52" big screen display are used to cue up, slow-mo and review the critical plays from the first half, (ever wonder why the Bulls always play better in the second half?). They even have a custom-built Mac that accompanies them on the road. Having seen this system in operation, it's very impressive. So, sure the Bulls are now the World Champian NBA team due to players like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippin and Dennis Rodman... but they also have another competitive advantage-the Macintosh! ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh?
