Ars Nova Software, developer of educational music software for the Macintosh, announces the release A Little Kidmusic version 1.1 KIRKLAND, Washinton -- June 3, 1996 Ars Nova Software announced the release of version 1.1 of A Little Kidmusic, the only Macintosh music program dedicated to teaching children how to read actual music notation. Version 1.1 includes additional "teacher options" that allow the porgram to be more extensively customized for children of different age groups. The program system requirements have been modified as well. A Little Kidmusic 1.1 is able to run on smaller Macintosh computers - 5-megabytes of RAM, System 7.0 or later. A Little Kidmusic emphasizes the fun of playing songs with accompaniment, and includes a library of 30 traditional tunes with harmony. Children can play songs with accompaniment by tapping any keys, or play rounds with the computer taking a part, or even write their own tunes and hear them played with computer accompaniment. A Little Kidmusic uses the internal Mac speakers for sound output, although it can be used with MIDI if desired. One of the built-in "instruments" is a human voice that sings "Sol -fa" syllables in four different keys; others instruments include guitar, piano, and pipe organ. The list price of A Little Kidmusic is $75. More information about is available at Ars Nova's web site http:www.ars-nova.com, including a selection of downloadable songs from the growing Kidmusic library. <http://www.ars-nova.com> <info@ars-nova.com>

mac.1165 madamov,
SEATTLE, Washington--Wide Open Workshop <http://www.wide-open.com> today announced Wide Open Web, a tool to give Macintosh intranet webs functionality unparalleled on other platforms. Wide Open Web (WOW) is a helper application that allows your browser to open links to any type of files or folders through your internal web. These files or folders can be on your local computer or on any network volume you have access to. When a WOW link is clicked the original file is opened in its normal application, so you are free to make and save changes, not just view information. Using Wide Open Web, intranet HTML authors can create pages that provide direct access to files of any sort, bridging the gap between web and non-web documents. Companies can create pages to organize all elements of a project in one informative location. HOW DOES IT WORK? Wide Open Web has two components - the creator application and the helper application. The creator application is used by the webmaster or HTML author. The author runs the creator app and selects files, folders, or applications that she or he wants to create links to. The creator app creates a new "WOW file" for each item - the WOW file is like an alias to the original, except that it works through the web instead of through the Finder. The name of the WOW file can be changed to anything, though it should end with the ".wow" extension. The HTML author then makes a link to the WOW file in his or her web page. When a user clicks on that link the WOW helper application is launched. The helper app tells the Finder to open the appropriate file, application, or folder. If the item is on a volume that is not already mounted, the user will be prompted to log on. Wide Open Web will soon be available for public beta. Users can register at the Wide Open web site <http://www.wide-open.com> to be notified by email of the upcoming release. Wide Open Workshop and Wide Open Web are trademarks of Wide Open Workshop. FileMaker is a trademark of the Claris Corporation.

Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 22:16:17 -0400 From: MacWay@aol.com To: macway@solutions.apple.com Subject: Macs in school Message-ID: <960619221615_221021392@emout12.mail.aol.com> Keyword: Market by market, Education Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better Keyword: Advocacy, Windows Daymares This story is from: <seej@vbe.com> (Jeffrey A. See) I am an English Teacher at Oshkosh West High School in Oshkosh, WI. When I was hired last summer one of my "unwritten duties" was to order all eqipment for and set up two sixty-seat computer labs in a new wing that had been built. Ordering the equipment would be no problem. I'd just get 60 Power Mac 7200s, a 12/600 color laser, 2 16/600 Lasers, a couple of scanners, some Quick Take 150s and maybe even a couple of modems and a QuickCam. The problem was that several staff members felt we should go to IMB/ compatibles since that is what they used in the "real" world. I fought desperately for the Macs, even offering to buy DOS cards. In the end I was able to reach a compromise whereby we would have 30 Macs and 30 IBMs. In November the Macs arrived and I quickly set them all up, loaded the software and had the entire network up and running without a hitch. (The exception being the very terrible Mac Controlo security system the district had resigned itself to.) In November we still did not have the PCs. (This was due to the fact that the district followed guidelines for the TYPE of PCs set down by a technician who wanted ease-of-repair control by buying PCs with generic parts). The company we went with, XXX XXXXXXXXXXXX, made our school district, which had just passed a 25 million dollar referendum, fill out a credit app. Then there were contant delays as they repeatedly gave our completed systems to more important customers. In January the systems all arrived. We opened all boxes and discovered that 7 of the systems would not start-up properly. After much haggling and threatening Company X agreed to take back the 7 machines and fix them. (23 working PCs, all standalones because the district tech did not have time to hook them up, which meant no printing). In the meantime I had Mac fail. Apple sent out a technician within three days and he changed the power supply, no problem. (30 working Macs printing in color and black and white. The drivers and software for the PC scanner had not been upgraded to Win95, so that sat useless as well. In February the district technician finally had time to set up Microsoft's proprietary network and get the 23 PCs printing. In March we took shipment of the 7 missing PCs and hooked them up to the existing network. All but two were finally working (the two wouldn't find the network for some reason.) After two months of calls, threats, etc, our technician tacked down the problem: the IRQs for the network card and the sound card were conflicting. After going through all the fixes, we ended up with 10 PCs that were not operational. We would need to reformat the hard drives and start all over. Needless to say it is June and the PC problems are still not solved. We will be using a Novell server for the PC side and the Win95 Client for Novell has not been loading correctly. So, for the school year, we had our 30 Macs operational for most of the academic year. The PCs were never completely operational and we had sporadic use of those that were configured correctly. I am the biggest evangelist at our school. I enjoy answering questions about why the PC side has had so many problems. My usual response: It's not a Macintosh. As a teacher with five classes a day I am in charge of maintaining this lab. The computer in my classroom has the Santorini Server Manager loaded and I administer the lab from right there. The software I chose for security (On Guard 2.1) keeps the kids out of machines and gives the staff all the access they will ever need. I am going to give the kids their own accounts. All done quite easily from my classroom. The PC security program, because of all of the bugs in Win95, allows kids to access the finder and write to the hard drive. (They say it will be fixed in a few weeks.) And in the fall, when these people who forced me to buy PCs instead of what my experience and knowledge said ask me why the PCs still don't work, well, you'll know my response. Message-ID: <960620081032_560212937@emout15.mail.aol.com> Keyword: Advocacy, Macintosh in Action This tidbit is from: <waynecotter@pobox.com> (Wayne Cotter) I was at the Boston Computer Museum today. They have an exhibit which is a giant computer, 2 stories tall. There's a 6-foot trackball, and kids are actually using it to play games on a giant (projection-TV) monitor with giant speakers. On the simulated giant CPU case, "Pentium Processor" and a giant "Intel Inside" logo are displayed. You walk through the computer, and inside are exhibits on the parts of a PC: ROM BIOS, Sound Card, Pentium Chip, etc. As I was leaving, I heard a LOUD Mac startup chord. I turned around, and one of the guides was restarting the system. On the giant screen: MacOS. I asked her whether she thought it was odd that the box said Intel and it was actually a Mac inside. She said "Oh, Intel donated the hardware. The Mac is just the software." ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Learn how to help the cause by subscribing to the "EvangeList" listserver!

APPLE MACINTOSH AGAIN LEADS PC INDUSTRY IN BRAND LOYALTY CI Research Reveals Brands with Highest Repurchase Rates in 1995 LA JOLLA, Calif., June 18, 1996 - The Apple Macintosh led the PC industry in repurchase loyalty again in 1995, as it did in 1994, according to Computer Intelligence (CI). Following Apple were Dell, Hewlett Packard, Acer and Gateway 2000, ranking second through fifth. IBM, Compaq, AST Research, Packard Bell, and NEC completed the list of top ten brands, in that order. The findings emerged from CI's recently released 1996 Consumer Technology Index (CTI), the largest and most comprehensive survey of personal computer usage in the United States. The repurchase rates measure what percentage of each brand's users who purchased a PC in 1995 purchased the same brand of PC they had previously owned. According to the CTI results, about seven in eight of Apple Macintosh users who purchased a PC in 1995 purchased another Macintosh (see table below). 1995 Repurchase Rates for Major PC Brands Repurchase Loyalty Apple Macintosh 87% Dell 74% Hewlett Packard 72% Acer 68% Gateway 2000 66% Source: CI Consumer Technology Index 1996 Said David Tremblay, CI's Senior Industry Analyst for PCs, "In spite of the highly publicized troubles Apple suffered in late 1995, Macintosh users remained the most loyal users of all PC brands, with repurchase rates in 1995 nearly identical to what we measured for 1994." Not surprisingly, the CTI survey found that respondents who purchased PCs for personal use generally showed lower brand loyalty than individuals who work on employer-provided PCs. The differences are attributable mainly to price sensitivities among home PC users, who are using their own funds rather than company funds, and to the fact that home users do not need to go through the purchase approval cycles present in many corporations. Relative strengths of the top five brands varied among the market segments. For Dell, Hewlett Packard and Acer, repurchase loyalty in the workplace segment was more than twice as high as in the home segment. For Gateway 2000 and Apple Macintosh, the measures were nearly equal, although the workplace repurchase rate was higher. Dell's emphasis has been the workplace market, so it is not surprising that its repurchase loyalty is higher there. Although Hewlett Packard and Acer made strong moves into the home segment in 1995, those PCs are still fairly new, and their users have not yet reached the start of an upgrade cycle, where repurchase loyalty would be tested. Apple's results for the two segments are the most nearly equal of all the major PC manufacturers, with repurchase rates ranging from 81 percent in the home segment to a stellar 91 percent in the workplace. Tremblay asserted, "Macintosh users' loyalty is a key to Apple's future. Our research shows that Apple has done very poorly in enticing other brands' users to cross over to Macintosh. Their business relies on sales to new users and on repurchases by existing Macintosh users. As the industry matures and penetration rates rise, more and more users will already have PCs, and finding new users will prove increasingly difficult. "Sales to existing Macintosh users provide a revenue base to support the company while Apple develops new products in new sectors of the industry that can provide for its future growth," he concluded. CI's Consumer Technology Index study is the largest, most comprehensive research effort focusing on personal computer usage in the United States. An initial screening of 50,000 individuals identified PC users in home, workplace and self-employed markets. Final survey results are based on a detailed 12-page written questionnaire on the types and brands of equipment used in the three markets, which was mailed to 17,500 U.S. PC users. The survey also gathers extensive demographic information from respondents and ascertains their future PC purchase plans.

Apple Ties in with 20th Century Fox "Independence Day" Apple Continues Marketing Momentum with Major Co-Promotional Campaign CUPERTINO, California--June 28, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc., today announced as part of the Company's bold, new marketing approach, that it has teamed with 20th Century Fox on co-marketing efforts for the upcoming feature film, "Independence Day." Continuing the positive momentum that began with co-promotional campaigns such as webcasting the GRAMMY awards, the TV and print campaign featuring the "Internet Test Drive" of a Z3 Roadster with BMW as well as feature film tie-ins, Apple continues to communicate its vitality and innovation in new and unique ways, while reinforcing the positive attributes of Apple's brand. "Apple's affiliation with 20th Century Fox on 'Independence Day' clearly demonstrates that Apple is an action-oriented company that continues to set new standards for innovation in technology and marketing," said Satjiv S. Chahil, senior vice president of corporate marketing at Apple. "It is a pleasure to work with forward-thinking 20th Century Fox and tie-in with such an extraordinary film." "Independence Day" is an exciting, special effects rich, sci-fi action thriller opening nationwide on the evening of July 2nd. The film tells the story of an unfriendly alien invasion, and the team of disparate individuals who must come together to save the world from destruction. "Independence Day" is anticipated by many to be one of the biggest films of the summer. Apple's work with 20th Century Fox on "Independence Day" began over a year ago when Apple's Product Placement team worked with 20th Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising division and the film's producers to help establish the Apple PowerBook as the computer used by actor Jeff Goldblum's character to save the world. The compelling images and themes from the film are being used by Apple in support of a marketing campaign summarized in the campaign tagline "The Power to Save the World." "We have been thoroughly impressed by the bold new approach Apple has instituted in its recent marketing campaigns, particularly for entertainment properties, and we feel strongly that this partnership offers a strategic and creative fit with our 'Independence Day' movie marketing efforts," said Pat Wyatt, president of 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. "In turn, Apple will benefit from the synergy that exists at Fox by working with many key divisions to execute and sustain the promotion over the entire lifecycle of the property." "By leveraging the close relationships we have with many key entertainment companies, Apple is able to create a new concept of marketing based on the excitement and global appeal of mass entertainment," said David Roman, vice president of corporate advertising and brand marketing at Apple. "We have found this to be an extraordinary way to freshen Apple's image, while taking advantage of major events in music, TV and film." My company is PC based and our IS guy wants to set up a NT machine for our server. (a 486/DX100) In the company I am the ONLY Mac guy doing graphic design, multimedia, web-page development, etc. (at least they realize our platform is FAR superior for this type of work) As a long time Mac user, I'd rather not have to make the switch. I went out on the web and found all the information I needed. I set-up a Mac-based web-server using MacHTTP with a counter (CountWWWebuela) and FileMaker database conncetivity. The IS manager and his assistant (who happens to be a ISP on the side) have been trying unsuccessfully to get a working counter on our NT server. They have also been struggling with MS Access for database connectivity. It has been well over a month since they started this project and have yet to get everything working correctly. By comparison, I was able to get my PowerMac running as a server with a working counter within a few hours. By mid-afternoon I had created a database from scratch and implemented a prototype feedback form linked to the FIleMaker database. Needless to say, my boss was impressed (the IS Manager seemed less excited) and we are discussing set-up of a Mac server instead of the current NT box. ----- Another totally unrelated story: My company was a fairly large Novell Network and is running PC compatible machines, I have the only Mac in the office. We recently purchased two new HP Laserjet 5M for our offices. The IS manager and his assistant were setting up one and I set-up the other. The Mac installation required 1 disk, the software for the PCs came on 8 disks (DOS drivers, Win 3.1 drivers, and Win 95 drivers) any one installation procedure required at least 2 disks. Within 30 minutes of being handed the new printer in the box, it was up and running and I could print to it from my Mac. The printer wouldn't show up on the Novell Network. It took a day and a half to get the printers on-line for the PC users. I estimate about 15 hours was spent between the IS Manager and his assistants. Durring the time that I was the only one able to print to our new printers, everyone was asking me why I can print and they can't. My answer was simple and gave me great joy, "I have a Mac!" ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Learn how to help the cause by subscribing to the "EvangeList" listserver! July 2, 1996 Apple Announces Immediate Availability of Game Sprockets Software Development Kit for Macintosh Over 4,000 Developers Evaluating Game Sprockets Technology to Simplify and Enhance Macintosh Title Development; Sprockets Enables Every Mac Game to Include 3D Graphics and Sound, Internet Capabilities, Speech Recognition, and Joystick Control CUPERTINO, California--July 2, 1996--Nine months from its inception, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced immediate availability of Game Sprockets Version 1.0--a new developer-driven software development kit (SDK) to create advanced multimedia and Internet-enabled games for MacOS computers. Using Sprockets, all games that run on Mac OS-based computers can feature real-time 3D graphics, 3D sound, Internet support, speech recognition, and input device/monitor control. The Apple Game Sprockets are designed to simplify the creation of high-performance Apple Macintosh entertainment titles and are available royalty-free to all interested parties. Over 4,000 developers have downloaded and provided feedback on the beta version of the SDK. The 1.0 version of Game Sprockets may be immediately obtained from the Apple Game Developer Web Site at <http://dev.info.apple.com/games>. Game Sprockets--named to reflect the extensible nature of the SDK--are application programming interfaces (APIs) designed to both solve problems that every game developer faces, and provide easy access to advanced features like 3D sound and speech recognition that would be too time consuming for most game companies to develop on their own. Apple Game Sprockets supplement existing Apple multimedia technologies such as QuickTime, QuickTime VR, QuickTime Conferencing and QuickDraw 3D. Developers can 'mix-and-match' individual sprockets to best enhance and complement the existing features of their title. "Our goal is to have the best version of any game title to be the one on the Macintosh," said Ben Calica, senior product manager of game technologies for Apple Computer, Inc. "The Game Sprockets programming team and SDK are essentially a 'hit squad' for game developers--they're our way of helping developers build great games for the Mac. Developers have a limited amount of time before they have to ship games for each Christmas season and I'd rather give them more time to make a title great, then simply 'making it work'. We have already registered over 4,000 developers who are currently evaluating Sprockets--it promises to be a great time for Macintosh games!" "SoundSprocket was easy to add to our almost-finished application and the 3D sound creates a richer, more immersive game-playing experience," said Brian Fitzgerald, president of Future Point, developers of Warcraft 2 for the Macintosh for Blizzard Entertainment. "All games on the Power Macintosh should use SoundSprocket!" "At MacPlay, we're very excited about version 1.0 of Sprockets and we have already integrated several of them into games we're developing," said Bill Dugan, Macintosh High Priest for MacPlay. "We believe Sprockets will greatly speed up our internal development efforts in creating the best Mac game titles and we are delighted that Apple has asserted its commitment to the important games market. We know that this SDK will help us, and all game developers, leverage the Mac's technology edge to create incredible games in the years to come." "Our products are about the best art we can make married to the best engineering we can find," said Todd Rundgren, rock star and president of Waking Dreams, developers of an upcoming 3D game for Macintosh and Windows. "If the technology isn't good enough we build it ourselves--fortunately, I think we can avoid most of that this time. The QD3D solution is not only good enough, it's smart enough, and gosh darnit we're gonna use it." "Bungie is very excited about the Game Sprockets API set and we are currently evaluating all the Sprockets technology for future titles," said Eric Klein, director of new business development for Bungie Software Products Company--developers of the award-winning Marathon game series. "At the Computer Game Developers Conference, Bungie demonstrated Marathon 2 running with QuickDraw 3D RAVE and an ATI 3D graphics board--the performance was awe-inspiring! Sprockets are definitely going to be hot for Mac game developers." "We are very pleased that Apple understands that games are a special class of application--one with unique needs and issues," said Tom Utiger, project manager for Wirehead Systems. "Game Sprockets relieve the game developer from having to write custom routines to do common, game-oriented tasks. We are especially happy with Apple's commitment to cross-platform development as shown by their development of 3D RAVE for the Macintosh and Windows 95 and the forthcoming NetSprocket for Windows 95. Wirehead is currently using RAVE and NetSprocket in a cross-platform game we are developing and it enabled us to proceed and code much faster than would otherwise have been possible. Of course, the real reason we like the Game Sprockets is because they are most righteous and non-bogus!" The current Game Sprockets SDK includes: NetSprocket - Internet connectivity and multi-player gaming API SoundSprocket - 3D sound and Sound Manager API SpeechSprocket - speech recognition API InputSprocket - digital joystick control and input device API DrawSprocket - multiple buffering/display control API QuickDraw 3D RAVE - fast, multi-platform 3D graphics API Game developers interested in learning more about Apple Game Sprockets should email Mark Gavini, Macintosh Games Evangelist, at <gavini@apple.com>. Product marketing information may be obtained from Ben Calica, Senior Product Manager, at <calica@apple.com> Apple, the Apple logo, QuickTime, Macintosh, and Power Macintosh are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc. QuickDraw and Mac OS are trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc. All other brand names mentioned may be trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective holders, and are hereby acknowledged. API Technical Details NetSprocket--NetSprocket provides standard, customizable user interface dialogs for configuration, log-in, and hosting a game across the network. A simple set of calls allow messages to be singlecast, multicast or broadcast to other machines within the game. A theoretical maximum of two billion users can simultaneously use NetSprocket across a broadband connection. NetSprocket also provides transparent access to Internet-oriented gameplay and multi-player gaming. This API uses Open Transport for TCP/IP, AppleTalk (with support for LocalTalk, EtherTalk or TokenTalk) and modem communication access. By utilizing a client/server topology, it is possible for gamers to use multiple protocols in a single session and with minimal overhead (a total of 28 bytes are used per player for the message header). NetSprocket also supports the creation of groups for broadcast of data to specific users across the network. SoundSprocket--SoundSprocket incorporates a standardized API for accessing both traditional sound functions as well as accessing new 3D sound technologies developed by Apple. For 3D sound, the listener and each sound channel are given specific positions and velocity vectors in a virtual audio space. These positions are changed during game play, along with the sounds themselves, to give the impression of spatiality and movement. The signal processing, taking advantage of the capabilities of the PowerPC, simulates the Doppler Effect, distance attenuation, environmental reverberation and spatial positioning. The 3D effect may be effectively presented over speakers or headphones--it is also fully integrated with the camera position used in QuickDraw 3D, which enables sound to "follow" the player in 3D space. InputSprocket--InputSprocket provides a compact API through which games can communicate with drivers for analog or digital joysticks and other game-oriented input devices in a plug and play fashion. It also provides user interface elements that allow player override of the default control options through specified dialog boxes. Mouse and keyboard support are also enabled, as are multiple input device support. DrawSprocket--DrawSprocket allows games to easily enable multiple (double or triple) buffering on the Macintosh for smooth display of graphic images. Multiple buffering is achieved by DrawSprocket using the best option available on the user's system--true double buffering in hardware, page-flipping, efficient memory copies or through the traditional CopyBits function call. The game does not need to be aware of the hardware specifics to use this benefit. DrawSprocket also enables configuration of display resolution or color depth without leaving the game environment (no need to access the sound and displays control panel) and screen sizing/blanking. A sprite engine, available through QuickTime may also be used in tandem with DrawSprocket. SpeechSprocket--Based on Apple's PlainTalk technology, this API allows developers to easily include high-quality speech recognition in their game titles. QuickDraw 3D RAVE--Recently announced as the first component of Apple Game Sprockets, RAVE enables developers to transparently access 3D graphics accelerators for maximum speed and throughput while also providing exceptional 3D rendering speed in software. RAVE lets game developers leverage their existing rendering technologies--a key issue for vendors seeking to differentiate their content. RAVE is shipping now for Power Macintosh and Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Kada zapakujem nešto, on snimi neke gluposti i na kraju kaže "This file is to small to be a valid zip archive". Naravno, oba puta sam upisao tip i kreator.
mac.1225 ljubisha,
mac.1226 haevorn,

Snimi ZTerm i vozi... > A šta nadgleda startup dokument RWatcher? Message-ID: <960706113422_149957117@emout14.mail.aol.com> I got this email recently. Thought I'd post it without attribution in case any of you thought you got an interview at the Microsoft booth. Maybe this guy "hired" Capps. :-) Guy __________ I was working at the Washington Software Association Developers conference in Bellvue, Washington this week. Microsoft had a booth for recruiting set-up. There were 5 Technical Recruiters in the booth, all MS employees, I watched as they were working to get their machine working for two hours. They got frustrated to the point of raising their voices to each other. I stopped by and asked what the problem was, they could not get to their computer to recognize the modem that they had installed. I have never owned any computer other than a Macintosh in my life, but was able to get the modem configured in a matter of 5 minutes. They thanked me with a gift of a squishy world ball. I returned to my post. An hour later one of them came up to me meekly and asked if I could help them get to the Microsoft Home Page to work. I spent a few minutes trying and could not find a solution, so I called the Internal Microsoft technical support number they had to use. They instructed me to reload the application from a CD. I tried and the CD was not recognized by the Plug and Play features in Win '95. This resolution took at least 45 minutes on the phone. At one point all of the Microsoft employees disappeared, leaving me alone in their booth. I talked to several people who stopped by with their resumes. I "interviewed" several of these unsuspecting individuals for the fun of it. ;-) When the recruiters returned, I had their machine running properly displaying Microsofts Web page and able to print available jobs. One of the recruiters then asked me to submitt a resume. I politely declined and said, "I am waiting for Apple Computer to start hiring again." ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Mariscal) Concerning the recent posting re "CD-Writing for the Rest of Us", I thought the Evangelistas would be interested in this quote from an article in New Media magazine by Brent Hurtig (9/95: p. 48): "If you are able to choose your CD-ROM mastering platform, we highly recommend the Mac. First of all, the Mac is the only desirable place to make true hybrid disks... Also, while we completed our Mac software testing in short order with only rare phone calls to the manufacturers, the Windows testing delayed this article by three months and contributed to many sleepless nights. We wasted many weeks and phone calls wrestling with conflicts between different software and firmware revisions, and system configurations. Nearly every day one bug or another brought our PC tests--and our three PC configuration experts to their collective knees. And, invariably, by the time we solved the problems, a new 'improved' software or firmware update would arrive, which would introduce even more variables. It wasn't pretty." Suffice it to say that my limited experience with CD-R on the Mac supports the above. Using the APS Technologies Sony 2X CD-R system ($599) using Toast software ($99 extra) on a PowerMac 8500, I was able to write sucessfully 6/6 of my first CD-R disks with no problems whatsoever, In fact, other than burning from a freshly initialized partition on a separate hard drive, it really was not much more difficult than making a standard click and drag finder copy to a removable cartridge drive. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Myers) We use a UNIX-hosted Sybase database to track bug reports in our mixed shop. The client software was supposed to be cross-platform, but heavy customization left everyone but Wintel on the outside, and left us with a form that is less-than useful for the majority of users (35 fields, 7 buttons, plus sub-forms). The backlog in MIS made the chances of a more usable version practically nil. Enter Macintosh. I already had an internal intranet web server running WebSTAR on a Quadra 840AV. To wire WebSTAR to the database, I had to: - Download and install Frontier - Learn enough of Frontier to do a CGI form - Write a small AppleScript SQL query for the Sybase database - Format the retrieved bug data and send it back to WebSTAR as HTML Total time -- 4 hours. I have since added several other queries and views of the data; each new form takes less than 15 minutes from scratch. We now have exactly the data we want, in the form we want, from any web browser on any platform. The platform-agnostic, easy-to-customize Mac-based solution also runs faster on a PowerMac 7100/80 than the "real" Wintel software does on a 166MHz Pentium. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? As the page loaded we caught a glimpse of a familiar icon in the background - a Macintosh mouse pointer. Not believing our own eyes, we did a screen capture on our 7500, zoomed in with Photoshop and found the images identical except for one moved pixel. Continuing the experiment, we turned on the Windows NT box we keep in the office (it helps us design Web pages in 256 colors) and peered closely at the screen (screen capture was not an option). Call us crazy, but the background icon on the Microsoft Web page was not taken from Windows but from the Mac OS. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? I wasn't here when they replaced an aging Wang system with Macs about three years ago, but it's a great story as to how it came to be. They sent out a request for bids for a networked computer system. They got two responses, one for an MS-DOS Windoze system and one for a Mac system. "Conventional wisdom" said that Macs cost more, yet the Mac bidder threw in a MARS document archiving system and was still $100,000 less! The lawyers (54) got Duo 230s, others (about 50) got Quadra 610s. Four Q800 file and fax/mail servers and a Shiva LANRover/E for ARA rounded out the initial setup. Major software included WordPerfect, Now Up-To-Date, Law Office Manager, Ready-For-Trial, Timeslips, DocuComp, QuickMail, and 4-Sight Fax. Other factors that made the day: * Startup time was 1/4 that of the DOS system. The Macs were in place and working before the Wangs were completely removed, whereas the DOS guys said it would take them six months to install everything. * The DOS bidder recommended three support people for ~100 users, the Mac bidder, one. One has indeed been sufficient to handle routine support and maintenance, with plenty of time left to do fun stuff like FileMaker databases and AppleScript utilities. * A presentation at the Apple Market Center was the turning point, some said. They were so-so going in, but came away very excited about Macs. It's too bad Apple Marketing kept the Mac Advantage such a well-kept secret, but this goes to show if people hear the pitch, they'll buy. Today I'm dragging them into the Information Age. When I arrived they were keeping case logs and other lists in as many as seven different WordPerfect documents, each of which they had to update when something changed. Now lists, primarily two case log systems, are done with FileMaker. The time saving is huge, plus they have case information at their fingertips. One monthly report of lawyer hour totals used to take half a day, now it takes about 15 seconds. Transmittal forms and letters are created in seconds with a single click. The secretaries and administrators are ecstatic. We can send email directly from FileMaker via AppleScript with one click. AppleScript daemons back up Now Up-To-Date files on the file servers daily and do other maintenance chores (the servers are on a different floor, so this saves a lot of steps). We are (finally) getting Westlaw on CD-ROMs (20 initially), and perhaps even our own web page soon! All in all we're now pretty advanced, especially for a usually staid municipal law office. I look forward to doing more with AppleScript, such as document assembly with a nice FaceSpan front end, and perhaps tying FileMaker to the calendar program, so that when an important event is entered, the affected lawyers automatically get email reminders and calendar events set. Slick, huh? Who says law offices have to be dull, especially government law offices? :-) Your tax dollars at work, Russ Coffman Mac Network Guy Dallas City Attorney's Office ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? The new Infini-D Production Studio(tm) significantly improves the capabilities of Infini-D 3.5 by adding BackBurner 3.5, a crash-proof distributed rendering solution for speeding up rendering over a network, Replicas CD, a one-stop source for hundreds of 3D models, and the updated Pro-Resource CD, which includes scenes, animations, textures, useful utilities, plus much, much more. Together, this makes Infini-D 3.5 Production Studio the ultimate 3D design and animation solution. ďWith the faster, more powerful, easier-to-use, and much less expensive program, the power of Infini-D 3.5 or the new Infini-3.5 Production Studio bundle make Infini-D an irresistible choice for creative professionals demanding the best in 3D design and animation capabilities,Ň said Thomas Fristoe, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Specular. NEW FEATURES: ANIMATED SUPERFLARES(TM): Lens flares on steroids! SuperFlares are high-quality lens effects attached to any light source. There are dozens of options for color, reflection style, streak pattern, and more, providing limitless optical effects. And, like everything in Infini-D, SuperFlares can be animated to create cool effects like exploding stars, shimmering stars, or fading lights. ANIMATED BOOLEAN RENDERING: Infini-D 3.5 now supports Boolean objects for ray traced renderings. Any object can be designated as a negative object or an intersection object which will cause it to carve itŇs own shape from other objects. Booleans can also be animated allowing you to dramatically change the result of this ďcarvingŇ via the advanced animation capabilities within Infini-D 3.5. RAY-TRACING SPEED IMPROVEMENTS: Rendering as polygons can produce speed improvements of up to 500 percent, while rendering as splines will provide the highest possible output quality. Polygon ray-tracing has been sped up by 200 percent or more. TRANSPARENCY IN PHONG SHADING: By combining ray-tracing with Infini-DŇs Phong shading algorithm, you can now achieve true transparent objects complete with refraction, without the additional time to ray-trace the entire scene. SHADOWCATCHER(TM) OBJECTS: A must feature for video professionals, ShadowCatcher(tm) Objects allow you to save the true shadow of an object in the alpha channel and composite it later against other images, animations, or video clips. Adds an incredible amount of realism without the painstaking task of hand-drawing faked shadows. SAFE TITLE AND SAFE ACTION MARKERS: Another must-have feature for video folks, these markers indicate what portion of your working area is considered to be safe for titling or overall action. INTERFACE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS: Select Light Through Floater, Selecting Tools via the Keyboard, nudging in the Workshop, Render with BackBurner, plus many more! mac.1254 ljubisha,
P.S. Kasno sam primetio al ako neko skine neka sam ispravi. Veliko "R" ne- ma levu crtu, tja. :( monakoyu.cpt
mac.1255 ljubisha,
I jedno nezgodno pitanje. :(( Nigde u samom ZTerm-u nisam naišao na tu sekvencu a i baš me interesuje šta mu piše ispod onih šest zvezdica. Jel imam neko neku ideju? P.S. Ista stvar je sa svim verzijama od 0.8.
