// "cannot be run on this system". Napominjem da imam 48mb RAM-a. nema RAM veze s tim, nego operativni sistem. Quark koji imaš najverovatnije traži USA OS a ti najverovatnije nisi kupio Mac-a u USA i zato nemaš USA-OS. Kako to rešiti?

DealBITS-024-16-Sep-96 ====================== We've been publishing DealBITS for a year now, and it's time for us to take a break from the work of publishing deals. That's right, DealBITS is going on hiatus (see Zomething from the Editors). In honor of this last issue, a number of companies have come up with excellent deals. Nisus Software joins us with a discount on the Kyoto Gardens CD-ROM, which uses QuickTime VR to showcase Zen landscapes. Landware is offering deals on its NewsHopper news client and ToDo List Personal Information Manager. On the Web front, you can take advantage of $100 discounts on various Web Server 4D products from MDG Computer Services, and Intelligence at Large chimes in with a deal on MovieStar, a program for making QuickTime and GIF animations. MacWorks is offering a Duo 2300c for $1499 plus deals of interest to those seeking external CD-ROMs, Geoports, or monitors. Small Dog Electronics returns with a variety of deals on Macintosh CPUs, as well as monitors, a StyleWriter 2400, external CD-ROM, modem, RAM, and the Microsoft Office 2.5 CD-ROM. Also in the hardware line-up, MacGurus enthusiastically continues in the vein of last issue with deals on all sorts of RAM. Other continuing deals include the ClarisWorks Users Group with a membership discount; Celestin Company with its Apprentice 5 CD-ROM, a CD loaded with materials of interest to programmers; and last - but not least - Wisdom Quest Multimedia with the eLibrary 96 CD-ROM. DealBITS is a twice-monthly electronic publication, dedicated to bringing deals to Macintosh users. Our goal is to encourage the creation of deals and to create a low-cost venue where all companies can afford to advertise. To inquire about placing a deal in DealBITS, contact us at <dealbits-admin@tidbits.com>. Please note that the email and FTP versions of DealBITS should be read in a monospaced font, such as Monaco. Nije demo, već prezentacija urađena u Macromedia Director-u. Imao si u vestima i TidBITS-ima koje ostavljam informaciju, System 8 neće još, prvo će ići dve revizije Sistema 7.5, dakle uslovno rečeno neki System 7.6 i 7.7, koje će imati ugrađene neke tehnologije iz System-a 8, kako koju dovršavaju. Tako će System 7.6, tj. sledeći po redu, ja ga zovem 7.6, možda ga i drugačije označe, imati standardno ugrađene OpenDoc, QuickTime VR, QuickDraw 3D. Povodom ove priče, evo i izvoda iz najnovije TidBITS-a: **System 7.5.5 Update** -- It's clear now that Apple has not yet released System 7.5.4, and in fact, according to sources, is fixing problems relating to the IR capabilities of some Macs. The update, when it comes out, will be renumbered to 7.5.5. The next mention of it in TidBITS will be when it's actually available.

Očekujte prikaz Cyberdog-a u sledećim Računarima. Apple and Sun Join Forces To Create High-Performance Enterprise Intranets and New Java-Based Component Development and Multimedia Technologies NETWORLD+INTEROP--ATLANTA, GA--Sept. 18, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced plans to build a seamless bridge between Apple Macintosh desktop computers and Sun Solaris enterprise servers, providing Internet and corporate intranet users a powerful combination of high-performance networking and media-rich desktop ease of use. In addition, the two companies will cooperate to enable interoperability between Sun's Java Beans and Apple's OpenDoc technologies and integration between Sun's JavaMedia and Apple's QuickTime. The companies will also work to establish mediaLib as a high-performance interface to multimedia-capable microprocessors. The Apple-Sun alliance sets the stage for a number of long-range development efforts to link the best of Apple's expertise in Macintosh ease of use and media-rich technologies--the QuickTime multimedia standard, OpenDoc developer framework and Open Transport networking technology--to Sun's industry-leading Java technologies and high-performance, enterprise-class Internet/intranet servers based on the scalable Solaris operating environment. Demonstrations at the Sun and Apple Networld+Interop booths (Sun #5130 and #5814, Apple #617H) reflect work in progress resulting from the companies' joint efforts. For example, enhancements to Sun's Solaris operating environment and Solstice network management tools allow Macintosh desktops to function through peer-to-peer connectivity with servers in Solaris-based enterprises, enabling Apple users to take advantage of secure and robust networking. In turn, Solaris servers at the booth demonstration are able to deliver Apple's cutting-edge multimedia technology to a variety of clients across diverse networks. Other booth demonstrations include the integration of Internet and AppleTalk intranet technologies with Apple's OpenDoc-based Cyberdog network client suite, as well as Java Management Application Programming Interface (JMAPI) desktop control functions running on a Macintosh for the first time. "The intranet is driving a new enterprise computing environment, one that combines the media-rich qualities of the Web with the established infrastructure of industrial-strength corporate networks," said Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, Apple's chairman and chief executive officer. "Apple and Sun are addressing this important area together to forge new solutions integrating our industry-leading multimedia capabilities with the power of Java, Java Beans and the Solaris operating environment." "The world has moved to the networked age. Increasingly, companies have been challenged with managing the complexity of enterprise networks that range from just a few systems, to tens of thousands," said Scott McNealy, Sun's president, chairman and CEO. "Today's announcement with Apple is about simplifying that complexity and providing powerful solutions to our customers. It's about further integrating Macintosh into a single, manageable network by using innovative network-centric technologies such as Java and the Solaris operating environment. It's also about providing best of breed technology combinations like Java Beans and OpenDoc for object-oriented development and QuickTime and JavaMedia for the best in multimedia." Initial Apple-Sun collaboration activities will occur in four primary areas: Improved Network Speed, Interoperability and Enterprise Management with Macintosh Ease of Use, Affordability Sun and Apple plan to enhance their operating environments, network management tools and security software to advance high-performance interoperability between Apple desktop computers and Sun servers. Successful collaboration would result in Apple and Sun systems that will be managed for the first time with the same tools from the same enterprise management console. Seamless peer-to-peer connection to Macintosh clients is expected to make it easier for corporate information systems managers to consider the Macintosh in purchase decisions, allowing companies to take advantage of Macintosh ease of use, media-rich environment and significant savings in maintenance costs when compared with conventional PCs. Compound Document Development Made Easier Apple and Sun will work to deliver component interoperability between Sun's Java Beans and Apple's OpenDoc component architectures to provide a full suite of component development services in an open, multi-platform environment. The collaboration will leverage the best of Java Beans as a compact, platform-independent API and OpenDoc for more complex component-based desktop and Internet/intranet applications. Interoperability of Java Beans and OpenDoc makes it possible to embed Java Beans inside OpenDoc containers. For example, a user might include some Java Bean components, such as buttons and a database viewer, inside an OpenDoc container. By connecting the buttons and the database viewer, users would be able to push a button to fetch a new database view as part of their container document. "Today's announcement is good news from IBM's perspective," said Steve Mills, general manager, IBM Software Solutions. "Apple's plans to join forces with Sun on interoperability between Java Beans and OpenDoc complement efforts that are underway at IBM. Clearly, our customers will benefit from the availability of open, industry standards that span the desktop through the networked environment." In addition, Sun and Apple expect to collaborate with each other, as well as third parties, to bring to market software development tools that will take advantage of the new technologies resulting from the joint effort, such as Sun's Java WorkShop. Sun Enhancing JavaMedia to Fully Support QuickTime As part of the joint collaboration with Apple, Sun will work to enhance JavaMedia APIs and libraries to fully support QuickTime functionality, adding a new dimension to Java Media. This means, for example, that a Java developer will be able to incorporate QuickTime video into a sales training or education applet, or add QuickTime sound to a media interview or entertainment broadcast. In addition to QuickTime's mature media-rich capabilities, Java developers will get immediate access to the broad base of established QuickTime tools and extensive developer community knowledge. mediaLib Brings Extra Power to UltraSPARC and PowerPC medialib, formerly known as the Virtual Device Interface, is a low-level, high-performance interface to today's multimedia-capable processors. mediaLib offers the path to performance without compromising portability, providing functions highly tuned for imaging, video, audio, algebra and graphics. Software and hardware developers will be able to use mediaLib to access the advanced multimedia and imaging capabilities of UltraSPARC and PowerPC microprocessors. Under the joint effort, Apple and Sun will work to get microprocessor manufacturers, system developers, library developers and leading independent software vendors (ISVs) to support the mediaLib API. Building Future Network Connectivity Solutions As demonstrated at Networld+Interop, Sun's enterprise servers and Solstice system management software interoperate with Macintosh clients in solutions available today. Going forward, the two companies will work to achieve out-of-the-box interoperability and common manageability for their respective product lines, advance messaging services, and a new systems management architecture. Specifically, Apple and Sun intend to provide the Apple File Protocol with every Solaris Server, allow Macintosh to be fully managed by Solstice network management products, and provide robust TCP/IP-based, high-performance networking by developing a common security architecture and enhanced file access to Web applications through WebNFS. Šta god ja uradio, on ostavlja sistemske bitmape. :(
mac.1495 madamov, -> #1494, askripka

Apple's HotSauce Supported by Industry Partners INTEROP DOTCOM--Atlanta, GA--Sept. 18, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced growing industry support for its proposed open industry standard, HotSauce Meta Content Format (MCF), which allows developers to build data access tools that work with any kind of Internet or intranet-based data. Key industry endorsers include Netscape Communications Corporation, XSoft, a division of Xerox Corp., Excite, BigBook, and EveryWare Development Corporation. Apple previously announced that CNET: The Computer Network and Yahoo! have implementation plans for HotSauce MCF. In addition, Apple announced that over 75,000 copies of its HotSauce fly-through plug-in for Macintosh and Windows 95/NT platforms have been downloaded from its website. Over 100 websites have been mapped using HotSauce MCF to date, including such diverse Internet locations as PC Week Australia, Metrowerks, a leading development tools provider, MacUser magazine, the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts, in addition to Yahoo!, CNET, and others. Finally, several software developers have already developed HotSauce MCF tools and applications. The HotSauce MCF and HotSauce fly-through plug-in were formerly known by the code names MCF and Project X, respectively. "Enormous amounts of information from databases and other sources are appearing on both Internet and intranet websites," said Larry Tesler, vice president of Apple's AppleNet division. "Navigating through a complex website full of structured content such as linked HTML pages and searchable databases can be a daunting task. To ease this burden, Apple is taking a leadership role in defining and developing the HotSauce MCF standard." HotSauce Fly-Through Plug-In The HotSauce fly-through plug-in, a dramatic demonstration of the possibilities of the new standard, is a 3D information navigation system that enables new ways of viewing and exploring Internet information. The 3D interface makes the structure of web content immediately apparent to users, giving them an overview of a website or database. The HotSauce fly-through plug-in is distributed solely through the Apple website (http://hotsauce.apple.com) for a no-fee license for personal use. Implemented according to the Netscape plug-in standard, it works with popular web browsers, including Netscape Navigator for Windows and the Mac OS, Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows and the Mac OS, and the browsing component of Apple's Cyberdog 1.1 suite on the Mac OS. HotSauce Connects Any Kind of View with Any Kind of Data Underlying this intuitive user interface is the advanced HotSauce MCF technology, which is an open standard for describing structured content. HotSauce MCF lets users connect any kind of view with any kind of data. "HotSauce MCF plays a similar role in the industry to the HTML standard," said Tesler. "As HTML is to the displayed page, HotSauce MCF is to structured content." HotSauce Meta Content Format is used to represent a wide range of information about content. It can describe information about content included in web pages, gopher and ftp files, email, and structured databases, allowing webmasters to make their content available through a variety of views to content consumers. HotSauce MCF is both platform and application independent. In addition to Internet and intranet data, HotSauce MCF can describe data on one's own computer and local area network, thereby enabling seamless integration of desktop and network content, not only in HTML browsers, but in a wide variety of access tools created by software developers operating in an open market. Mac OS users can download a research prototype application that demonstrates HotSauce desktop/Internet integration from the aforementioned Apple website. Industry Support for HotSauce A wide range of companies, including Internet content providers and application and tools software companies, announced today that they are endorsing the HotSauce MCF standard for bringing diverse structured content to the Internet. Netscape Communications Corporation gave support for the standard, saying it is an important addition to navigation tools for the Internet. "The HotSauce fly-through plug-in adds an important feature to Netscape Navigator's browsing capabilities," said Mike Homer, senior vice president of marketing at Netscape. XSoft, a Xerox New Enterprise Company, announced that it will support HotSauce in its Information Visualization technology. Available to software developers and content providers, XSoft visualizations, based on many years of Xerox PARC research, generate 3D graphical representations of information so users can easily navigate through complex data structures, such as websites and file directories. "With the explosive growth of web-based communications, the need for more powerful ways to work with large volumes of information is reaching a critical stage," said Mohan Trikha, vice president and general manager of XSoft. "Our support for this standard ensures XSoft's visualizations will be open and interoperable with other structured content that has been defined with HotSauce MCF." Excite, an Internet content provider, which has adopted HotSauce MCF and offers the HotSauce fly-through plug-in on its Search & Reviews website for Macintosh users, will be evaluating the technology for use on the entire Excite website. "We're thrilled about the potential of HotSauce," said Faulkner Hunt, director of business development, Excite. "The 3D view is very intuitive and works the way your brain works. We see this as an exciting new approach to visually displaying Internet information." BigBook, the nation's leading online Yellow Pages service, is working to leverage HotSauce to allow users to view information on 16 million U.S. businesses in a more compelling and intuitive way. "Having an open standard such as HotSauce MCF to define structured data on the Internet is a big step forward," said Kris Hagerman, president, BigBook. "We're excited about the potential of this technology to help our customers view large amounts of data quickly and easily." Finally, EveryWare Development Corporation, which offers Tango and Butler SQL products that allow webmasters to create powerful web-database solutions, announced that it will support HotSauce MCF in its products. "Since our products are database-oriented, we see a big advantage in defining content stored in databases under a common standard,"said Dan McKenzie, president and CEO, EveryWare Development. HotSauce is currently being evaluated by a number of database providers, Internet content providers, and tools and applications developers. Apple is evangelizing HotSauce adopters and pursuing a "sauce your site" campaign for Internet websites. Oracle Corp., based in Redwood Shores, Calif., is one of the companies evaluating HotSauce. "We are currently reviewing the technology to understand how it can be used with our products," said Bonnie Crater, vice president of the workgroup products division for Oracle. "For many applications, the ability to view data in visual layouts is a huge benefit to users." In addition, several third-party developers have developed HotSauce tools and applications implemented in C, Java, and other programming languages. These developers include Lightbulb Factory, Inc., New York, NY, which offers a free tool to automatically map a website with HotSauce, and a HotSauce directory, which lists all websites in a 3D format that are mapped with HotSauce; LuxusSoft, Germany, which offers BookMark2X, a tool to convert Netscape bookmarks into Apple's new HotSauce file format so that users can visually fly through bookmarks or a collection of web pages within the Netscape Navigator browser window; and Innovative Technology Consulting, which has released MCFTools, a Frontier suite that adds automatic HotSauce-generation capabilities to websites built in Frontier's website-building framework. Apple, the Apple logo, AppleNet, Mac OS and Macintosh, are registered trademarks and HotSauce is a trademark of Apple Computer, Inc. All other brand names mentioned are trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective holders, and are hereby acknowledge.

Svi imaju "fabrički" urađena i YU slova. Uz njih sam dobio i Croatian tastaturu.

You can use the Interactive Music Toolkit to create enhanced music CD titles on Mac OS computers that can be played on both Mac OS and Windows systems. Enhanced CDs (ECDs) include graphics, pictures, lyrics, and QuickTime movies in addition to basic music tracks. Included with the toolkit is a specifically designed music engine for the Apple Media Tool, which is used to assemble the interactive portion of the ECD. Also included is the Lyric Synchronizer utility, which synchronizes lyrics to the music. ECDs created with the Music Toolkit are 16-bit audio CDs with multimedia content. The Music Toolkit also lets you create a virtual CD (VCD)--a CD that contains the multimedia content (lyrics, graphics, QuickTime movies) without the audio. Users download a VCD from the Internet, and with the audio CD in the CD-ROM drive, the music and multimedia content will play back simultaneously. This allows record companies to add interactivity to audio CDs without having to produce a new version, because they can create a VCD and post it on the Web. You can download the Apple Interactive Music Toolkit from the Web: http://www.amp.apple.com/imt/imt.html

==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> ==> Apple and Telos Introduce New Audio Streaming Technology Streaming technology is a key to delivering audio and video content over the Web. Traditionally, data sent over the Internet is broken into small units called "packets," which are then reassembled in the proper sequence when they arrive at the user's system. Audio and video, though, are more appropriately sent as constant streams of data. Streaming technology resolves this conflict, making it possible to send audio or video data over the Internet and have it arrive at a user's computer so it can be viewed isochronously--that is, without any breaks (or in "real time"). Continuing to take the lead in Internet multimedia delivery, Apple recently announced that it will introduce Telos Systems' audio streaming technology based on Telos's ten years of broadcast industry experience, research, and development. Audioactive is fully compatible with Macromedia's Shockwave plug-in and Shockwave audio standard; if a Web browser supports Shockwave, it can automatically receive live Audioactive broadcasts. Browsers that don't support Shockwave have to use the Audioactive player to hear Audioactive streamed audio; you can download it for free from the Audioactive Web site at: http://www.audioactive.com/ For more details, see the complete Apple press release announcing the new technology: http://product.info.apple.com/pr/press.releases/1996/ q4/960916.pr.rel.telos.html

Case in pont: We just bought a new CD-ROM (Disney's "Toystory Animated Storybook", with PIXAR doing all the hard work, of course!) for one of our sons for his birthday. Package is ripped to shreds by said son and into the Mac (Performa 6300CD) it goes. The CD is going along great - superb rendering, sound, music, and the performance on this Mac is excellent. Dad, of course, starts reading the manual - a hold over from my VAX/VMS days, I guess. I find the Installation Instruction page and do a double take - NO Mac instructions! Windows has a 5-step instruction list. Windows 95 has a 6-step instruction list. NO Mac! I moved my thumb...ooops... there it is... "There is no need to install the Toy Story Animated Storybook on Macintosh systems. Just follow the instructions for starting the program." Version 2.0 is now Internet savvy with new Email Links and Web Links, providing the ability to launch Internet programs like Netscape Navigator or Claris Emailer from within Claris Organizer. "Claris Organizer 2.0 sets a new standard in usability and efficiency for contact managers," said David Christopher, Claris Organizer customer marketing manager. "It provides customers with an easy-to-use solution for managing business and personal contacts and a powerful feature set for more efficient time management." The streamlined design of Claris Organizer 2.0 looks and works like no other personal organizer, with a simplified contact card that displays information much like a business card. Instant Find, Instant Filters, and the new Instant Organizer menu provide instant access to contacts, appointments, tasks, and notes. Other new features, such as Decors, Memorizable Views, the Gripper, Birthday Minder, and field level file synchronization, combine to make Claris Organizer 2.0 a powerful contact manager. New Features in Claris Organizer 2.0 Instant Links - using AppleScript, the Email Link and Web Link launch Internet programs like Netscape Navigator or Claris Emailer within Claris Organizer. The URL or email address is automatically pasted into the web browser or email message right from the contact card. The Letter Link launches ClarisWorks or MacWrite Pro, creating a letter linked to the contact card. Instant Organizer - this menu allows people to scan frequently called phone numbers, see upcoming to-dos and appointments, and even create new contacts, appointments and tasks. Instant Find - can find anyone or anything instantly through a unique search engine via first name, last name, initials, company name, or any combination. People can also conduct full text search of tasks, notes, calendar, or the entire file, or search by any selected field or category. Instant Filters - provide a way to view a subset of contacts, tasks, and notes through easy pop-up menus. Filter customers by city, state, or country; find friends and family by birthday month; or sort tasks by priority, due date or project. Memorizable View - one or more filters can be applied at a time to create a custom view that can then be saved, or "memorized" such as "customers in California" or "highest priority tasks due this week." Decors - provide a way to personalize Claris Organizer, choosing from 15 different looks: from business-like "Linen" to cool "Cave Dude," hot "Chili Peppers," or romantic "Rose Garden." The Gripper - provides an easy way to create and link any item to another by dragging and dropping it: drag a contact onto the task field to create an attached task to "call" the contact; or drag a task to the calendar to create an attached appointment to "work on" the task. Birthday Minder - places an annual reminder of the event on the calendar after a birth date has been entered on the contact card. Field level file synchronization - gives people who travel a way to automatically reconcile the differences between laptop and desktop files at the field level, bringing both files up to date. Claris Organizer 2.0 system requirements include: a Macintosh with 68020 processor or higher; System 7.0 or higher; a hard drive with a minimum 2.5 MB available disk space; 5 MB for full installation; 4 MB RAM for 68K; and 8 MB RAM for Power Macintosh.

When I returned there is a new PC guy in the office, he's going to take over some of my reporting to free me up for other projects... great. I need to give him my FileMaker databases & stuff. He just finishes telling me a story about setting up his new Dell 133 and frying the CD, something about incompatibilities with new Intel boards... blah blah.. it was dead for 4 hours until he got a patcher. I ask him if he can decompress .sit files, 'sure.. no problem'. I DropStuff my files and give them to him on 2 AOL-Windows diskettes (thanks AOL)... I see him in what looks like a Word dialog box mumbling 'convert.. to..', I say 'you aren't not converting anything, you are decompressing'. Oh, 'I guess I can't handle those .sit files'. O.K., So I get online download and download ZipIt, Zip my files to a nice archive on 2 disks, and give it to him. 'I can't get PK-Unzip from the network drive' he says. So I download WinZip95.exe and give it to him on disk... he get's it going, but the shareware version won't join archives spanning multiple disks. So I Zip my files to individual archives and give them to him, he unzips them with the program I had to give him, and everyone is finally happy. It's nice to know I can provide my PC coworkers with the tools they need to do their job, of course I will do it with my Mac. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? >> Miki, nemoj više. Počinjem da uramljujem ovakve poruke. :)) > Zato ih i ostavljam. Baš me interesuje šta to konkretno znači.

Štekneš i radi, pravi P&P.

Walk into a computer retailer and ask for machines with clock speeds in excess of 200 Mhz. If you're told they don't exist, mention they do, but they're Macs. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? All I asked was, "How's your MAC working out?" Well - he started gushing! He said that he difinitely is in the minority, but it seems everyone on his hall at VA Tech loves to come to his room and use his MAC. It's helping him make new friends - girls too (they think it's cute!). Within a few days of arriving on campus, Matt was corresponding with us by e-mail on a regular basis. All around him the new PC's these kids brought to campus are crashing or there are problems getting printers and hard drives hooked up right ..whatever. And so guys on the hall tend to come to Matt's room to finish up their work. They all marvel at how different and EASY it is to use. Most have never been exposed to a MAC. Don't ask me to explain it. When we helped move Matt in I saw some of the monster Pentium/Windows 95/huge monitor set-ups and thought: "Matt is going to be dwarfed by all this power!" But not so. Mind you, Matt is using a 5 year old MAC LC with 10 megs of RAM and a 12 inch monitor! It has an accelerator in it, though, so it's adequetely fast. But still ... before giving it to Matt, I thought of donating the LC to a local school. Little did I know it would perform so well in a major university environment. This proves once again that just because the MAC is great fun to use, it is not a toy! I offered to plan for a Power MAC purchase later this year, but he said "No, Dad - this MAC is fine for now!" I would also like to commend the VA Tech administrative offices on campus - which all use state of the art Power MACS. I hope you enjoyed Matt's real life, real world experience. I shared it for two reasons: 1) It goes back to what I've always believed - it pays to buy the machine that works easiest, is most flexible and saves time. And if you can have fun with it - all the better! 2) To encourage you in your PC maintainance career. It seems you will always have work. In fact, you should consider setting up a PC shop every fall outside of any given dorm at VA TECH. Rake in the money then go on vacation! But then again, you'd never get to see Matt ! ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? The article measured the performance of the PowerPC 603e and 604e vs the current Pentium and Pentium Pro. Each of the processors were running the cross platform Bytemark benchmark series. The PowerPC 603e is the low power, low cost chip designed for us in laptops and low end desktop systems, and the PowerPC 604e is a high performance chip designed for high end desktop and server systems. The Pentium Pro is the successor to the Pentium chip, currently in use in high end and server systems. The benchmarks went as follows: Processor Clock Speed Bytemark Integer Benchmarks ------------------------------------------------------------------ Pentium 90 mHz 1.0 Pentium 200 mHz 2.1 PowerPC 603e 117 mHz 2.2 Pentium Pro 200 mHz 2.8 PowerPC 603e 200 mHz 3.8 PowerPC 604e 200 mHz 4.5 Currently Mac and Mac compatible systems are shipping with up to 240 mHz PowerPC 603e and 225 mHz PowerPC 604e systems available. The bottom line is that the PowerPC chips (and the Mac's they are in) kick the butt's of the best that Intel can produce (and the Windows PC's that they are in). The Bytemark benchmark programs are available for PowerMacs at the Byte web site, under the benchmarks icon. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Why is there still life in an old Mac? According to Mr Sam Low, managing director of De-Image Pte Ltd, one of the largest used computers retail store situated along Tannery Lane, there are several reasons for the higher resale value of old Macs. "Used Macs fetch relatively high prices because Macs are not as common as PCs, and their original price tags are much higher. "Also, older Macs like the five-year-old Mac IIci are still useful as they can operate the latest Mac OS when additional RAM and hard disk space are added to it," Mr Low said. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Apple Bringing QuickTime to OS/2 Warp CUPERTINO, Calif.--Sept. 25, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced QuickTime for OS/2 Warp and demonstrated a pre-release version. Apple will bring the QuickTime architecture to OS/2 Warp starting with a pre-release version of QuickTime for OS/2 Warp to be included with IBM's Developer Connection release in the fall. Final release of QuickTime for OS/2 Warp is scheduled for the first quarter of calendar 1997. QuickTime--a pervasive industry standard for CD-ROM and Internet content authoring, playback, and delivery--is a multiplatform architecture for storing, editing, and playing synchronized video, sound, music, graphics, and text. "Apple's contributions to the computer industry for multimedia, Internet content creation, professional video and music continue to push the envelope in innovation," said Ellen Hancock, Apple's chief technology officer and executive vice president of research and development. "QuickTime for OS/2 Warp continues this effort. QuickTime makes it easier for broadcast professionals, CD-ROM developers, and Internet content creators to manage and repurpose their content for new markets, thereby receiving a greater return on their investments." Apple Computer, Inc. is currently working with IBM to ensure that QuickTime works seamlessly with OS/2 Warp. QuickTime for OS/2 will be a native 32-bit OS/2 application that takes full advantage of OS/2 multimedia support, such as Direct Interface Video Extensions (DIVE) for high-speed video and direct audio (DART) for optimum audio performance. QuickTime for OS/2 will include a movie player, picture viewer, online help, and a configuration manager. Developers will be able to more easily port their QuickTime applications to OS/2 because QuickTime for OS/2 supports the same API as QuickTime for Windows version 2.1.1 (the latest available version of QuickTime for Windows). Corporations upgrading to OS/2 Warp 4 will be able to take advantage of QuickTime for OS/2 Warp without worry. The results of QuickTime's capabilities, coupled with the ease-of-use and power of Apple's Power Macintosh computers, can be seen throughout the industry. Apple is the leader in many creative industry segments as evidenced by the following: 62% of all CD-ROM authoring is done using a Macintosh*; 60% of all digital music is created on a Macintosh**; 45 - 50% of all digital video creation is done on a Macintosh*** ; 41% of all web content authoring is done using a Macintosh****; 30% of all film and video post production work is done on a Macintosh*****; and 20% of the web servers in use today are Macintosh computers******. With the availability of QuickTime for OS/2, OS/2 users can work and play more seamlessly with creative industry professionals and the multimedia products they create. Apple, the Apple logo, Macintosh, and PowerBook are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc. All other brand names mentioned are trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective holders, and are hereby acknowledged. * Dataquest, 1995 ** Pipper Jaffray, 1995 *** AV/DV Videography magazine reader survey, 1995 **** MARI, 1995 ***** Phillips Business Information, Film & Video Survey, 1995 ****** Georgia Institute of Technology, 1995

U snazi, brzini, nameni.

Apple Launches Aggressive Campaign to Promote Third-Party Software Apple Computer, Inc., has just announced an aggressive communications campaign for promoting third-party software titles for the Mac OS. Named "All great software wears this face," the campaign is designed to raise the visibility of third-party software for the Mac OS by making it easier for customers to identify, locate, and purchase Mac OS software products through various distribution channels. The campaign is primarily designed to address issues surrounding what are called "hybrid" CDs, which contain multiple-platform versions of the software in a single package. Hybrids account for a large percentage of overall Mac OS software titles but may not be sold in a software retailer's Mac OS section, potentially creating the perception that there are fewer software titles for the Mac OS. In-store merchandising will include attention-getting banners, posters, and floor decals. Displays in selected retailers' Mac OS sections will identify the hottest new software to hit the market for Macintosh computers. Brightly colored pamphlets will offer customers peel-off notes containing descriptions of the hybrid issue and how to identify all software that runs on the Mac OS. More important, additional signs, shelf cards, and labels will help shoppers pinpoint Mac OS software titles outside the Mac OS section. All collateral will sport the Mac OS logo and tag line "All great software wears this face." The campaign will be reinforced by targeted advertising in major publications. Like the merchandising, the advertisements will feature popular Mac OS software titles, providing third-party developers with high-level exposure to large audiences. This is particularly valuable to smaller developers with modest advertising budgets. The advertising will reinforce the entire campaign by providing a special toll-free telephone number and comprehensive Mac OS software Web site on the Internet. The toll-free telephone number will provide customers with easier access to information on Mac OS software products. By dialing 800-500-4862, customers will be given several options. The first will provide the names of Mac OS software retail stores in a caller's geographic area. Apple and Netscape to Collaborate on Internet Conferencing Apple and Netscape Communications announced that they intend to work together to create interoperable, standards-based applications and development tools for real-time audioconferencing and videoconferencing over the Internet. In the near term, CoolTalk, a Macintosh-based Internet conferencing application developed by Apple, will be bundled with Netscape Navigator 3.0. CoolTalk for Macintosh enables Macintosh users to audioconference with Mac OS, UNIX, and Windows users over the Internet using just a 28.8-Kbps modem and Netscape Navigator 3.0. CoolTalk for Macintosh also interoperates with Apple's line of QuickTime Conferencing videoconferencing and collaboration products (http://qtc.quicktime.apple.com/). According to Netscape, this future release will be the first fully cross-platform conferencing or "webphone" application on the market today. In the initial release, CoolTalk will be based on Netscape's LiveMedia protocols, which will be included in the emerging H.323 international standards. A future release is expected to deliver online whiteboard features and full, multiplatform conferencing. CoolTalk for Macintosh joins Netscape's line of Internet "webphone" products: CoolTalk for Windows and CoolTalk for UNIX. You can download any of these products free of charge from Netscape's Web site: http://home.netscape.com/comprod/products/navigator/cooltalk/download_coolt alk.html For details, you can review the complete Netscape press release: http://home.netscape.com/newsref/pr/newsrelease249.html

Compared to all the other Windows PC vendors combined, significantly fewer Mac users called tech support (69 percent versus 79 percent). Plus, Mac users were significantly happier with the service they received when they called: 80 percent rated the tech support they received Excellent -- 97 percent rated it Excellent or Good. MicroMat Releases Free PageWatch Palette Web Utility New browser-enchancing software adds to power to web browsers. About the service: Let's say you spend a lot of time checking your favorite web site for updates. Maybe it's a software vendor and you've been checking it for an update to one of their programs. I find myself checking the Apple Software Updates page all the time for new versions of system files and utilities. Most of the time I end up hearing about the update from someone else because I haven't checked the Apple page recently. That's why we created the free PageWatch service. PageWatch is a server-based robot that keeps an eye on web pages for you. In a nutshell, you simply send an email message to PageWatch with the URL of the page you wish to track. PageWatch will then check that web page for you everyday. If that page is updated, you'll be sent email message letting you know the page has something new to investigate. The service can also be controlled by using forms at the site. <www.micromat.com/mmcs/pwatch/> About the software: PageWatch Palette (PWP) makes using the PageWatch service much easier. With PWP, you simply press a button on a palette which floats near your browser. The software automates the entire PageWatch submission process. It also allows you to stop watching a particular page without the need for sending email-based commands. Browser Compatibility: PWP works with Netscape Navigator 2.0 or above, MicroSoft Internet Explorer 2.0 or above and with tcpConnect browsers. While the PageWatch service is available to any web-compatible computer platform, the palette software is only available for Macintosh. You can download this free software from: <ftp://members.aol.com/micromat/PWP103.sit>

Press Contact: Dean Dahlgren Phone: (630) 830-1113 Fax: (630) 830-1262 <dean@maxum.com> For release on or after September 30 MAXUM DEVELOPMENT SHIPS PAGESENTRY AND PAGESENTRY PRO - NOW MONITORING ALL YOUR INTERNET SERVERS Streamwood, Illinois, September 30, 1996 - Maxum Development Corporation, a leading developer of Macintosh Web server add-on tools, this week shipped its upgrade to PageSentry Pro and a new product PageSentry. Maxum's line of Internet server monitors allow customers to maintain reliable Internet services seven days a week, 24 hours a day. In addition to Web site monitoring, PageSentry 2.0 and PageSentry Pro 2.0, now provide monitoring for FTP, SMTP (e-mail), DNS, and Telnet services as well. PageSentry and PageSentry Pro use these high-level client services to test the whole server operation, not just the low-level networking functions. PageSentry Pro now allows the addition of 100 Sentries to monitor large enterprise sites and Internet Services Providers. PageSentry is designed to meet the needs of departmental or small enterprise server monitoring. "This version has been almost a complete rewrite of the earlier versions," says Michael Clark, Director of Engineering for Maxum Development. "We have tried to anticipate all possible concerns of the system administrator, including a more intuitive interface and tremendous flexibility in configuration." It is an Internet imperative to provide visitors with reliable access seven days a week, 24 hours a day to a Web site. Keeping their servers up and running are the Webmaster's top priority. When a server fails, PageSentry will notify anyone specified by e-mail or by using any AppleEvent-aware application, including AppleScriptA applets. For example, PageSentry includes applications for sending alpha-numeric pages (using MarkSpace's PageNow! software, available direct from Maxum) or automatically restarting servers (using Sophisticated Circuit's PowerKey ProA hardware, also available direct from Maxum). Schedules and back up notifications can also be set to define what actions should be taken at different times of the day or days of the week. For example, PageSentry might send an e-mail or page during business hours, but automatically restart the server in the evening or on the week-end. PageSentry also monitors itself via a "pulse", which can also be sent to the site administrator. This ensures around-the-clock access of Internet services to users. "This new version greatly extends PageSentry's effectiveness", according to Joe Duffy, Manager -Technology and Tools, Baxter Healthcare. "Now I have a complete solution to monitoring all aspects of our global Internet infrastructure". Current license holders can upgrade by downloading the PageSentry Pro 2.0 demonstration version from Maxum's Web site and dropping their PageSentry Pro Key on the demo application. PageSentry Pro retails for $349 and PageSentry retails for $149.00 new customers can order by either visiting <http://www.maxum.com> or by calling Maxum Development at (630) 830-1113. Founded in 1991, Maxum Development is a leading developer of commercial World Wide Web server tools for business and education. My department also works off Unix mainframes and maintains a large clients Unix based system, using Ingres/SQL. We use our PC's for word processing etc as well as dumb terminals for the Unix mainframe. The floor has one Macintosh which is viewed by most as a bit of a resource waste. Anyway, our client wished to use a product called GQL. This program allows the user to construct SQL queries against a Unix based database very efficiently. It's available for PC and Mac. So our support guy comes in and starts to install the software onto my PC. First, we have to confirm that this is Win3.11, not 3.1 because the stuff won't work on 3.1. Fine, we confirm this in the Program Managers 'About' window. He then exits Windows and starts hacking away at all of these DOS setup files (you know config.sys, win.ini etc). This is necessary because of the network setup we have (allowing us to connect to Netware and TCP together). He finishes his workaround and begins installing the new software. Guess what? The version of Windows was actually 3.1, even though the 'About' window said otherwise! He changes back all of the settings that he stuffed with and we reboot and install Windows for Workgroups. He then goes back in and makes some other obscure changes. By this time I was thinking how lucky I was that I didn't have to do this myself. The guy finishes his changes and loads up Windows. It fails. After a few more adjustments, he works out that he has the wrong commands to address the network card (you've still got to set this stuff up in DOS). He ends up spending about 3 hours toying with my PC, only to eventually give up for the day and spend 10 minutes reversing all of his changes so that I can use the thing again. He's going to have another try at it later in the week, perhaps next week. Unfortunately for him, all of our PC's here are similarly set up. What's that? Oh, the Mac? Someone (not usually a Mac user) installed GQL on it in 5 minutes. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? I have a very good friend that runs a medium size business in northern California. He has four locations (Main office, sales office, production plant, and warehouse) that he needed to connect together on a network. The main ofice, sales office and plant are actually in one office building but on separate floors. His IS director was doing the research on networking all of the office together on a NT based platform. As much as I hate to admit it, I did applaud his choice for choosing NT over 95. When my friend told me that they were having trouble finding the right programs to fit his needs I suggested the only correct solution-Macs. His MIS director said that he would have nothing at all to do with the Mac platform and would not provide technical support for it. I told my friend that once the system was up and running that there would be very little support required and sent several e-mail messages and forwarded previous MACWAY mailings regarding installation and support costs. When my friend received them he asked his IS director to give him an estimate on how much it would cost to set up the LAN on the NT platform, IS responded with an approximation of $1500.00 for the time to run cabling, connect the units, and install the remote point software. This did not include hardware and software nor actually ensuring that the computers were connected once turned on and that the central print server would work as well. When I was told the price, I made my move, I told my friend to buy 6 7600/120's, Filemaker Pro, M.Y.O.B., ARA, and a first class airline ticket to fly me out to see him. When I arrived, they had all of the 7600's out of there boxes and up and running. All of the software was installed, except for ARA, and the printer was connected at the main office. My friend was very suprised at how easy they were to set-up, he and two of the office staff did it themselves while the IS director was on vacation. We went to the local computer store, bought some Ethernet cabling and adapters (total cost $150.00) and returned to the office. In five hours we had run the Ethernet cabling run across three floors and had the entire main office connected and sharing files and printer. Next we headed to the warehouse to set-up ARA and in fifteen minutes we had a connection with the main office. When we crunched the numbers, the NT boxes that were being looked at and the 7600's were approximately the same cost. The installation cost my friend $930.00 ($780.00 for the airline ticket and $150.00 for cables) and earned me a great vacation. It is important to note that This would have been very difficult to do if I had not saved my EvangeList digests to provide hard evidence of the facts. Evangelistas, make sure that you save your mailings! BTW: He just hired a new Mac saavy IS director! ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? What's the best way to view, edit and print Powerpoint for Windows '95 files if you don't have Windows '95? A. Use a Mac! I work in the IT department of one of the Philippines' largest advertising agencies. Our agency is cross-platform. As expected, our creative work is done exclusively on Macs, but our accounts, media and accounting work is done on PC's running on a Novell Netware LAN. At 5:30 one afternoon, one of our Account Execs showed up with this problem: With a big client presentation coming first thing the following morning, he had created his presentation sheets on his home PC earlier in the day, using Powerpoint for Windows '95. However, when he tried to consolidate his sheets done at home with those of the rest of his team at the office, he was rudely surprised to find that Powerpoint for Windows 3.X will not read files done in Powerpoint for Win '95 (Our IT manager, a hard-core PC geek, has banned Win '95 from the office -- IMO, one of the smartest moves he's ever made.). Desperate, with the presentation deadline ticking closer, he came to the IT group for help. "No problem," our PC experts in the IT group said, "we'll just download a translator to allow Win 3.X Powerpoint to open Win '95 Powerpoint files." After over an hour's worth of download from the traffic-clogged Microsoft web site, they got a 1.3 mb file which, according to the web site blurb, would supposedly allow them to do just that. But after installation, all they got was a Powerpoint for Win '95 *viewer* -- they could view the file, but they couldn't edit it or, more importantly, print it out. While my PC colleagues hemmed and hawed over the viewer-that-was-supposed-to-be-a-translator, it was nearing 8 pm, and the Accounts guy was getting increasingly frantic. That was when I stepped in. A quick download from Microsoft's site yielded me a 389 K translator allowing Powerpoint 4.0 for the Mac to open Win '95 Powerpoint files. I unstuffed the translator, dropped it into my Powerpoint folder, launched Powerpoint, successfully opened the offending file, saved it to a PC disk as a fully-editable (and printable) Powerpoint 4 presentation, and delivered same into the greatly-relieved hands of the Accounts Exec. From start to finish, solving his problem took me and my Mac less than 15 minutes -- ten of which were spent downloading the translator. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh?

U svakom slucaju hvala.

Sto brzi odgovori to bolje!

Recently he asked me "Is there anything a Mac can do that a Pentium running Windows 95 can't?" I sent him the following message (granted I grabbed lots of these factoids from Mac Addict magazine, but they're always worth repeating): As I recall, your question was something like "Is there anything a Mac can do that an Pentium running Windows 95 can't?" The simple answer is, of course, yes. And there are things a Win95 machine can do that a Mac can't (I have to use Windows in my work because of some of the things that can't currently be done on a Mac). But the question itself is rhetorical, and the simple answer isn't useful. But since you asked, here's one thing you can't do on a Win95 machine: transfer long file names to earlier versions of the OS. Win95 can handle 255 characters file names (the Mac does 32 characters), but you can't transfer those file names to earlier versions of Windows or DOS, because of the 8 characters DOS restriction. So if you name a file "Letter to Grandma" in Win95, then pass it on to someone without Win95, the only thing they'll see in the filename is "letter.xxx" or some other truncation, because you can't use spaces in a DOS filename (but you can on a Mac). And if you get a file from a DOS or pre-Win95 user, you get the same old inscrutable 8 letter filename. The Mac filenames, which have been 32 characters since before Windows was released (where do you think Bill got the idea?) are tranferable between any version of the Mac OS. Oh, here's another thing. Right out of the box, with no additional expansion cards required, a Mac can accept up to 7 different devices (ie. harddrives, scanners, CDRom drive, etc) because all Macs have a built in SCSI connector. With an intel machine you'd have to buy a SCSI controller card (and make it work) before you could do that. If you have low-profile PC, there isn't even room for an additional internal hard drive, so you either replace the one you've got (then what do you do with it?) or live without. Unless you want to connect it to the parallel port, in which case frozen molasses will begin to look fast and your printer will be looking for a home. Even if you have space for an internal drive, you still have to deal with the IDE interface, which is no fun. When I added an external harddrive to my Mac it took me about 15 minutes. Oh, and here's another. Right out of the box, with no additional expansion cards required, you can network a Mac with a number of other Macs and printer(s) using an external adapter connected to one of the Mac's TWO serial ports. Total cost? About $15 per Mac, plus however much standard telephone cable you need to get from one to the other. The networking software is a standard part of the Mac OS. And you can do this with ANY Mac, all the way back to the original model. Oh, and another thing. The fastest personal computer you can buy is a Mac clone (the PowerTower Pro 225MHz). A Win95 can't say that. And we're in the early days of the PowerPC chip. Oh, here's another thing. A Mac's 3.5" floppy drive can read and format PC floppy disks. I routinely transfer graphics from my Pentium to my Mac by just taking the floppy from the Pentium and sticking it in the Mac. A simple utility built in to the Mac OS allows me to copy the files onto the Mac harddrive, where I convert them to Mac format. Stick a Mac floppy in a PC and it emits a foul odor and melts all over your desk. Oh, did I mention that Macs have built-in CD quality sound, with stereo in/out ports? Right out of the box, without any additional expansion cards, a Mac can play sound files. The files can appear on the desktop as icons, and you can play them by just by clicking on them; you don't have to start any programs to do it. A Win95 machine can't do that. Unless of course you pay extra for a sound card. To be fair, I have to admit at least one thing a Wintel machine can do that a Mac can't. A Mac can't be infected with any of the over 8000 viruses that PC's are vulnerable to. To date there have been only about 50 or 60 viruses that affect the Mac. Oh well, the Mac can't be good at everything..... I may be opinionated, but my opinons are based on experience, from my first computer (a Sanyo 8088 <@> 8Mhz) to the Zenith 286 I used for database development at work for two years (they had to upgrade it to a 386 so I could get on the network), to the 486 laptop and the Pentium 75Mhz desktop systems I use daily in my work today. Oh, and the 386 I used in my Autocad class. There's also the PC's in the distance learning classrooms I manage. The one's that we can't connect one of our important peripherals to because the mouse uses up the only serial port. We've had our Mac for about 5 years now. It's just better, Glenn. When you think about what it's like to USE the computer, not just what the computer can do. The Mac is FAR easier to use and understand than a Windows PC. And it's been a lot more fun. And since a computer is the most expensive toy I'm likely to buy, I want the funnest computer I can get (even if I pretend I'm using it in my work!). I won't pretend that a Mac can't give you headaches, and I've gotten some of them. But normally a problem on the Mac is like hitting a speed-bump in a Rolls Royce. You know it happened, but it doesn't jar your fillings loose. Compared to the DOS/Windows world, where it's more like riding a skateboard over a storm grate. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh?
