Date: Sun, 6 Oct 96 08:55:47 -0000 From: Guy Kawasaki <gkawasaki@macway.com> Subject: Macintosh Server Security Message-ID: <199610061555.IAA07589@solutions.apple.com> Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better This tidbit is from: <aknight@trip.net> Recently I went searching for MacPerl and came across the Perl Homepage <http://www.perl.com> and noticed a security bug, so I went deeper into the matter and found an intresting bug indeed. Using this bug, a user can run any program they wish on the web server's drive! Even upload one and use it! But I also found the following, proving once again that Macs are the safest internet server made. Period. "This problem probably affects only amateur and/or commercial machines running those cursEd spawn of CP/M that Microsoft (and no one else) calls operating systems. Professional software development systems like Unix and Plan9 should be largely unaffected. Paradoxically enough, Apple systems running their native systems should also be ok because the setup is so different." This, after the contest posed by TidBITS not too long ago to break into a Mac server, shows just who wins out on security. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Siloam Springs, ARK -- TwIN Software Group is pleased to announce that its entire send-anything-ware line of Macintosh only games is available for FREE downloading on the Web at <http://step.jbu.edu/TwIn/twin.html>. Our flagship game is the Virtually Unreal Adventure, MYSTy 3, a parody of the best-selling CD-ROM game MYST. MYSTy features stunning 3-D graphics, QuickTimeVR nodes and sub-parodies of Bungie's Marathon and Ambrosia's Maelstorm. Not to mention puns, bad riddles and even worse Arkansas jokes. MacUser On-Line rated MYSTy with FIVE mices, calling the game "arresting." Phillip Dyer of Ziff-Davis writes, "MYSTy still requires a *lot* of resources, but it's worth it: you'll be blown away by the game's thoroughness." MYSTy is also availble through MacUser's web site at <http://www.zdnet.com/macuser/software/>. Since 1992, the ragamuffin TwIN Software Group has been creating send-anything-ware for the Mac.

> Emulator? Au?

Najzad, podesim sve to.

U instalacionim readme fajlovima piše da AppleShare Client for Windows radi na Windows 3.1, 3.11 i 3.11 for Workgroups. Tu smo, dakle!

No, i dalje imam PC. Zasto ? Svira, cak i dobro.

Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 03:23:52 -0400 From: MacWay@aol.com Subject: Followup to "Open Letter to CIOs" Message-ID: <961010032351_206788923@emout09.mail.aol.com> Keyword: Advocacy, Guerilla Tactics >From an EvangeLista who wishes to remain anonymous. I just read your Article #8 --- Aug 30, 1996 -- (C) 1996, John Martellaro, "An Open Letter to CIOs", and realized immediately that this was in fact the truth never told. It is the story of my life. In 1984, I introduced four Macs-(128k) into my Engineering Department at xxxx Bell Telephone Company. They were set alongside a few existing IBM PC,s and DEC Rainbow's. My staff swarmed over the new technology like flies on a fresh roadkill. These creative folks would take them home nearly every weekend and soon the PC's had turned into boat anchors, much to the chagrin of our MIS experts. I loved the user experience and pioneered the use of Mac's in xxxx Bell and later throughout the xxxx Region. I risked much on my vision of empowered staff, collaborating on assignments, concentrating on the work at hand and not the "geeky bits & bytes" of the technology. Here was a computer that normal creative people could use without first spending weeks with computer manuals. The world was good. I was receiving huge raises and excellent performance reviews due to the fact that my department's results had soared. I elevated Macintosh technology to the platform of choice for the corporations executives and officers. After about 5,000 units had been deployed across the region, we got new "enlightened" MIS leadership along with a new CEO. They ultimately decided to become a one-platform corporation and with a corporate downsizing just being planned, didn't need me or any ardent Mac users. In retrospect, they got rid of almost all of the creative visionary types in this downsizing process. Their message to the masses..."Think what we tell you or be gone." They were not interested in anyone who had ANY vision, much less a vision that differed from the CIO's. BTW, you might be wondering where the CIO got his vision. The CIO and his cohorts were frequently wined and dined by I*M, Microsxxt and other large vendors. Sailing excursions, cruises, trips to Europe, sporting events, golf outings, Broadway shows, free lifetime use of the latest technology in the office and at home, you name it they got it. The "dark side" of corporate politics had won. Creative employees lost, customers lost, shareholders lost, everyone but the executives and "chosen" vendors lost. I was glad to have been one of those who made a difference. I am happy to be able to think for myself and use the platform of my choice. A platform that complements and expands my abilities. A platform that inspires me to be my best. What have I learned? It is increasingly difficult to be creative or visionary in large corporate, or governmental agencies. Leaders in these environments (I use the term loosely) appear to want to keep the status quo. Their mission statement..."Don't make waves, don't do anything that garners attention. Keep your department from disappearing by deploying technology that requires large investments in staff." This is not an environment where you will find me. Thank you for your insightful article. It was right on the mark. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Free Listings in Web-Based Enhanced CD Database Apple Computer, in conjunction with N2K Inc., recently announced the launch of the Enhanced CD Database, a Web site where you can list your Enhanced CDs. (An Enhanced CD is a music CD that can be played on any audio CD player. If you put an Enhanced CD in a computer, you can still listen to the music, but you can also access multimedia content that is also on it.) The Enhanced CD Database site allows users to find and sample Enhanced CDs. In addition, using a link to N2K's online music store, Music Boulevard (http://www.musicblvd.com/), users of the Enhanced CD Database can immediately purchase the Enhanced CDs of their choice.

Here at Cray Research we have been asked to submit "Seymour Stories", of which there are many - he was an eminently quotable guy. One such story, that I heard years ago, might be of interest. Apple Computer purchased a big Cray supercomputer in the mid-1980s. In fact, Steve Jobs was Cray's first and only walk-in customer. He arrived unannounced (so the story goes) at Cray headquarters in Mendota Heights, Minnesota and asked to speak to someone about buying a Cray. They nearly threw him out. It's only slightly less eccentric than someone walking into NASA Johnson Space Center and inquiring how to purchase a shuttle orbiter. Later, Cray president John Rollwagen phoned Seymour and told him that Apple had just purchased a Cray that would be used in designing the next Macintosh. Seymour thought for a bit, and replied that that seemed reasonable, since he was using a Macintosh to design the next Cray! ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? :)

Date: Mon, 14 Oct 96 21:58:00 -0400 From: sheppard.gordon@moondog.com (SHEPPARD GORDON) Subject: To Be or not to Be Rumor mill works overtime as Be takes on giants of computing 10/15/96 Yomiuri Shimbun To Be or not to Be--that is the overused pun. To everyone who hasn't been under a rock these past few weeks, "Be" is one of the most talked about goings-ons in the computer industry in quite some time. It also offers a unique opportunity of observing Web-culture in full swing, as rumors change on an almost daily basis. Be is a new computer and operating system. Be, Inc. is led by Jean-Louis Gassee, former president of Apple Computer's product division. Based on two Power PC processors, the machine, called a "BeBox," is fast. According to reports from recent demonstrations, it's able to kick out multimedia and graphics displays that would cause other machines to crash and, quite possibly, burn with envy (http://www.be.com). At the Be newsgroup (news:comp.sys.be), one user wondered what to do in order to impress colleagues with his newly acquired BeBox. The answers offered amounted to allowing the machine to run between four and eight video and three graphic displays at once, with the dual processors still not reaching capacity. The video displays can be dragged around the desktop and resized while the video is playing, without skipping a beat. What does this mean for the current computer of choice for graphics and video, the Mac? Enter the rumors. The rumors, to be fair, haven't all come >From denizens of the Net. The conventional media has done its share, witness an article from USA Today that Apple is trying to buy Be (http://www.usatoday. com/life/cyber/tech/ct246.htm). It includes the damning sentence, "Some inside Apple have concluded that the BeOS delivers what Apple doesn't expect to deliver until 1999." Of course, at the current rate of OS development at Apple, few would be surprised. Nobody seems to know just when the new OS will be ready--if ever. Which leaves at least one Mac clone-maker ripe for Be. Many recent Be demonstrations have been done on machines made by Power Computing, a Mac Clone company. Power Computing will begin to offer machines preinstalled with the BeOS from the beginning of next year. Users will be able to switch from Mac OS to BeOS, so long as they have a separate hard drive for each and don't try running the two simultaneously. So is Mac trying to buy Be? Will Be be bought? No one really knows for sure, and the people who know aren't talking. Much. Which has led to the rumors. RD Novo of the Infinite Loop Rangers (http:// www.ambrosiasw.com/AppleSauce) said rumors on the Web are like a high-tech version of the children's game, telephone. "By the 10th retelling of the news, it's become something else entirely. That is, of course, the nature of the most interesting of rumors." Novo would know. His page, "AppleSauce," is in the interesting rumor business. "And when you're supposed to be on the cutting edge of rumor, you're supposed to know more than the other guy. For the most part (since there's a real dearth of hard fact in this case) that means coming up with likely scenarios and airing them as speculation." The key word here is speculation. As Novo points out, the nature of the Internet is that everyone becomes a self-appointed expert and suddenly has a forum for expression. "All you need is a catchy name (like, oh, say, "AppleSauce" or the "Infinite Loop Rangers") and a catchy slogan (like, oh, say, "Apple intelligence and wit") and the cojones to publish what you hear/ think," Novo said. When speculation begins to mingle with rumor, the result is what we've seen on the Web these past few weeks. Whether or not Apple is really thinking of buying Be has become beside the point. Clearly, Be has awakened something in the computer world that has been lacking. "We haven't seen Mac fans this excited in a long time," Novo said. Including Novo--Novo's page, and a good portion of the discussion surrounding Be, has been in support of a bold move by Apple. Some Mac fans see Apple as a dying company, in need of a brand new approach to stay alive. Others just think it would better computing--and better business--to use the Be approach. Be's system is neither as bulky nor as complex as the Mac OS or Windows 95. In fact, the developer's manual is around 700 pages--far smaller than the 24 volumes one needs to consult for Mac programming. The paperwork for Windows developers, it has been said only half-jokingly, won't even fit in one room. It's a back-to-basics approach, and it's got the online world buzzing with excitement. For another Be news story, check Austin 360's "BeBox takes on computing Goliaths" (http://www.statesman.com/tech/technews/10oct/07/be7.htm). Links to the most recent can be found at several Be home pages. One of the better ones is "BeYond" (http://www.skip.adb.gu.se/beyond/). "BeFirst" also offers news link and information, although there seems to be a little less here (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/befirst/). "The Betoken Vault" was created on a BeBox, and offers more news and information (http:// www.cybercity.dk/users/ccc4485/bezone home.html). For now, most of the pages are a bit technical in nature. Many of them are run by developers eager to work on a BeBox. Even if the pages offer little information for the layman, one thing is clear: at least for now, the BeBox is inspiring a following and devotion quite similar to that of the original Macs. And they only have around 3000 units in circulation--with most of them belonging to developers. Take a look at Norwegian developer Stig Olsen's home page (http://www.ifi. uio.no/-stigo/bebox.html). Olsen no longer updates this page--he's too busy-- but rather than take the page down he decided to let it "die a quiet death." As testament to his devotion to the BeBox, Olsen includes a link to a fuzzy picture of him, clearly ecstatic, wearing his new "Be" T-shirt. Olsen's page remains useful for it's basic information and question-and-answers pages on Be. Even Japan is not immune from the Be craze. At least two pages devoted to the BeBox have sprung up on this side of the Pacific. One is "The BeBox (Pre) Users' Home in Japan," (http://www.bekkoame.or.jp/-rasman/be-q/). The other is at http://www2.gol.com/users/noah/bebox/. Finally, for those who either can't wait or don't want to buy a new machine, there is something of an alternative. Greg Landweber and Edward Voas, the same people who created "Aaron," a shareware extension that allows Macs to look like the Mac desktop of the future, have created "BeView" (10, dollars http://greg.math.harvard/edu/). As its name would imply, "BeView" allows the Mac interface to look like the one shown in the screenshots at the Be home page. Just don't expect to edit eight videos simultaneously.

(It may start to hurt the Consultant/Technician community.) Case in point. Customer purchased two systems (Mac for office, PC for home) and signed up with a local ISP for Internet access for both. He bought the PC because: 1. His kids used both at school, but the teacher said the Mac is dead. 2. The PC was about $300 cheaper. He bought the Mac because: 1. I told him he would save money. 2. He had used Macs in the past and got more done. The customer arranged for me to visit his office to install the Internet software and get him up and running on a Tuesday morning. I arrived at 9:00am, had a coffee and left (job completed) at 9:30am. This includes installing the 3 diskettes, reading the single page of installation notes from the ISP, and a phone call to the ISP help desk (the local dial-up number was missing from the documentation). I charged him $37.50 (my rate is $75.00/hr) The customer asked me to install the home PC on a Saturday. I arrived at 10:00am and got down to work. After wading through 16 pages of documentation, 8 installation diskettes, several rewrites of .bat and .sys files, and 4 separate calls to the ISP help desk, I finally got his system working. I left his home at 4:30pm. I charged him $337.50 (I normally charge $100.00/hr on weekends, but didn't have the heart to rub it in) >From a business standpoint, I prefer working on PC machines. The extra hassle of the Windows environment allows me to be able to afford to buy new toys for my Mac. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? Apple Announces World's First Integrated Chinese Input Solution Easy-to-Use Suite Combines Award-Winning Chinese Dictation Kit with New Chinese Handwriting Recognition Technology; Extends Apple's Lead in Chinese Computing CUPERTINO, Calif.--Oct. 9, 1996--Reinforcing its commitment to deliver computing solutions to many languages, Apple Computer, Inc. announces the first integrated solution for inputting Chinese text on Mac OS-based computers. The Apple Advanced Chinese Input Suite (ACIS) represents a major milestone in Apple's effort to bring innovative and easy-to-use solutions to Chinese-language computer users. The suite includes Apple's first Chinese handwriting solution, enabling customers to switch effortlessly between microphone, graphic tablet, and keyboard to enter simplified and traditional Chinese characters. "The Apple Advanced Chinese Input Suite represents the most advanced all-in-one Chinese input solution available on a desktop computer," said Dr. Louis Woo, director of the Apple Design Center Singapore. "It provides Mac OS users a more natural way to input Chinese text--via speech and handwriting--while complementing keyboard-based input methods." According to Apple research conducted in Taiwan*, 91 percent of Chinese-speaking personal computer users feel that using speech and handwriting together provide a fast and accurate method for inputting Chinese text. What Exactly is the Apple Advanced Chinese Input Suite? ACIS consists of three components: the Apple Chinese Dictation Kit 1.5, the Apple Chinese Handwriting Kit 1.0, and Apple Chinese Text-to-Speech 1.0.2. All the ACIS components install from a single CD-ROM making it easy to install. ACIS is also easy to learn because customers can access instructional QuickTime movies and an online manual from the installation CD. In addition to the three main components listed above, the suite comes with the Apple Dictation Microphone. The Apple Dictation Microphone is a uni-directional microphone that reduces surrounding noise when inputting with the Chinese Dictation Kit 1.5, ensuring accuracy of word recognition. New Advanced Handwriting Recognition As part of ACIS, the Chinese Handwriting Kit 1.0--Apple's first Chinese handwriting solution--is a true plug-and-play solution. It requires little training, and it recognizes any handwritten Chinese character, as long as it is written in the sequence of common strokes used to write the Chinese language. With the addition of any brand of Mac OS-compatible graphic tablet**, users can write any Chinese character or phrase in either simplified or traditional form. Chinese Handwriting Kit 1.0 is intelligent enough to recognize printed and cursive writing. In addition, it recognizes Roman letters and numerals. Customers can choose different writing modes--from left to right, right to left, or top to bottom--and use an on-screen keyboard for inputting punctuation marks and special symbols. As an added bonus, the CHK is bundled with Stroke Player--an easy-to-use on-screen guide to writing Chinese characters properly. It shows users how each stroke should be written and displays these strokes in the right sequence. Natural Voice Input The Chinese Dictation Kit was first launched in October 1995. Like the earlier version, CDK 1.5 requires a user to "train" the system to recognize his or her voice by reading 25 pages of text, which takes about two hours. The system processes the recording to produce a voice module that it uses for recognition. Version 1.5 now comes with an enlarged dictionary with 20,000 words. Since the Chinese Dictation Kit is a phrase-based speech dictation system, it can identify more than 350,000 commonly used phrases. Users can also separately create their own dictionaries where they can store new or special phrases. CDK 1.5 is also AppleScript-savvy. Users can now copy and paste text between applications through a voice command or a simple mouse click. It recognizes continuous number or date dictation and enables dictated text to be read back by the computer, based on the new Chinese text-to-speech feature. Since introduction, CDK has become a highly acclaimed and internationally recognized product. Earlier this month, the Singapore government, through the National Science and Technology Board, bestowed the 1996 National Technology Award to the development team of CDK. At last year's COMDEX Asia, it won the Best Software and Best of the Best awards. Voice Playback ACIS also comes with Apple's first Chinese text-to-speech system extension which provides a unique way to proof documents or learn the correct pronunciation of Chinese characters. Once installed, it reads back any selected Chinese text or whole documents. ACIS includes both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese versions of the extension. System Requirements The Apple Advanced Chinese Input Suite runs on any PowerPC-based Mac OS system with System 7.5 or later; Chinese Language Kit 1.1.1 or later. ACIS requires 8MB of free RAM; at least 35MB of free hard disk space to accommodate the voice file generated during the training phase of using the Chinese Dictation Kit; and 16-bit sound input. Pricing, Availability, and Distribution Apple expects to ship ACIS in many Chinese-speaking markets in Asia starting Nov. 1, 1996. In North America, this product is expected to be available from Apple's distributor, AsiaSoft (1-800-882-8856 or visit www.asiasoft.com) and its resellers in mid-November with an estimated retail price of U.S. $165.00 (including the Apple Dictation Microphone). Actual reseller prices may vary. *Survey carried out in Taipei, August 11-15, 1996 ** A Mac-compatible graphic tablet must be purchased separately and is available through PC and Macintosh resellers and peripheral distributors. Apple has tested ACIS extensively with several well- known, Mac-compatible graphic tablets. Other Mac-compatible tablets should work equally well.

My pastor just completed his dissertation for a Doctor of Ministry project (he'll hopefully have the degree conferred and not have to do more work on his paper;-)) Anyway, a "friend" gave him a used PS-1 and WordPerfect 6 for DOS to prepare his dissertation. In the 14 months that I have been on staff, I have seen him come close to "losing his religion" over dealing with the problems of this paper. He couldn't get formatting to work, the pages were always misprinting. Finally, he had to work one page at a time, print it, fix the next page, print it, and so forth...well over 100 pages (usually taking about 2 minutes per page assuming there were no printing problems). He finally got his paper printed, and sent the last preview copy to his supervising professor for the last minute adjustments before submitting his final copies for binding. The prof sent a few technical (formatting and layout) corrections. We opened it up, and all the work that had been done originally for the formatting was lost (so we were back to square one). My pastor bought a new Wintel (I warned him not too) with Correl's WordPerfect for Win95 and had even more trouble with it. So, finally, he came to me about the problem. I started looking at all the problems that were in his paper and decided that I could fix it on my Mac. I saved everything as plain text (lose the formatting, & footnotes), imported it into ClarisWorks on my old Performa 405, formatted everything into the Chicago Manual of Style format, readded his footnotes, saved as WordPerfect for Windows file on a DOS disk, opened it in WP for Win95 and let him print (I didn't have the font he wanted to use). This took me less than 8 hours (including looking up questions about CMS). It took him about another 45-50 minutes to print four copies of everything. So, my 68030 Mac saved a Pentium user who now wishes he would have bought a Mac. Maybe one day he will learn. ---------10 minutes later--------- I'm glad I saved this before sending..... My pastor just walked in my office showing me his newspaper classified ad showing that his computer is up for sale (he's taking a loss), and tells me that he will be getting a Mac! Apple's Q4'96 Financial Results: The Six Key Points CUPERTINO, California--Oct. 16, 1996--the following was released by Apple Computer, Inc.: 1. Apple's Transformation Progresses. Apple has achieved many of the most critical goals of its transformation, and remains confident about reaching sustainable profitability by the end of Q2'97. Sales have not only stabilized, but grew during this quarter; and over the last two quarters, the operating expenses have been significantly reduced. Going forward, the Company's challenges will be to extend its competitive leadership in key markets and to reclaim the mantle of industry pioneer and innovator. 2. Improved Inventories, Margins, and Costs Containment Produce Continued Financial Improvement. Apple continues to make progress in strengthening the Company's financial position. The Company achieved $410 million in positive cash flow from operations during the quarter, reduced inventories by nearly $400 million since June, and ended the quarter with over $1.7 billion in cash and short-term investments, which is $610 million more than our outstanding debt. Gross margins increased due to several factors, including declining component costs and improved manufacturing efficiencies. The Company achieved further sequential reductions in operating expenses, primarily in general and administrative functions. 3. Apple's Sales Grew During the Quarter. After stabilizing sales in Q3, revenues increased from $2.179 billion in the June quarter to $2.321 in the September quarter. Sales in the US K-12 education market were higher this quarter than in any other quarter in the Company's history. Sales to business customers were also up notably from last quarter. 4. Significant Endorsements from Enterprise Customers Continue. Apple continues to gain new--and extend sales to existing--enterprise customers. Customers who made major enterprise commitments to Apple include: Los Alamos National Labs, Jet Propulsion Labs, Southwestern Bell Telephone, Art Institutes International, State of Texas (CADA), Qualcomm, and Don Rey Media. Additionally, key alliances such as the Sun-Apple alliance are designed to help fortify Apple's proposition to enterprise customers. Apple has agreed with Sun to work together to create high-performance enterprise intranets and new Java-based component development and multimedia technologies. 5. Apple Renewed Product Offering Imminent. Parallel to its efforts to stabilize sales and control expenses, Apple is taking proactive steps to renew its product offering, and to be able to meet key market expectations, in a competitive way. Examples of this broad effort include: - New products and solutions designed for enterprise customers; - The total renewal of the PowerBook family, with the expected introduction of a new PowerBook on Oct. 21, 1996, and a number of additional new PowerBook models expected to appear throughout 1997; - Apple's intention to aggressively pursue the home market with products at a range of price points. - Apple's plans to introduce a Performa system to meet the specific demands of the home and education market. - Apple's plans to offer specially designed software packages for elementary, middle school, and high school students, in addition to a games package. 6. Expectations for Q1'97: Comparable Sales to Q4'96. Apple expects sales volumes in the first fiscal quarter to be relatively comparable to Q4'96 volumes, in spite of anticipated lower PowerBook sales, due to the start of a planned new product transition over the next two quarters. The mix will shift towards consumer-oriented products, and PowerBooks will be in a ramp-up mode. Beginning in the second quarter, Apple expects to begin to experience some modest year-over-year growth. Apple feels good about it's ability to sustain gross margins at or above the 20 percent level, and expect to hold operating expenses to around $500 million a quarter. Apple, the Apple logo, Macintosh, and Mac OS are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc. All other brand names mentioned are registered trademarks or trademarks of their respective holders, and are hereby acknowledged.

Ko ono reče da Apple propada? B) * Apple Posts $25 Million Profit for Quarter Ending Sept. 27, 1996 Below is an exact copy of *today's* press release, as it appears on this month's Apple press-release Web page (http://product.info.apple.com/pr/press.re leases/1997/q1/961016.pr.rel.q496.html): ----- (begin press release) ----- Apple Computer Announces Quarterly Results Company Posts $25 Million Profit; Revenues, Margins, and Cash Flow Reflect Continued Improvement CUPERTINO, California--Oct. 16, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced results for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Sept. 27, 1996. For the quarter, Apple's revenues were $2.321 billion, a decrease of $682 million from the fourth quarter a year ago, but a sequential increase of $142 million from the quarter ended June 30, 1996. Unit shipments for the quarter were approximately 932,000, a decline of 26 percent from the year ago quarter but a sequential increase of 11 percent from the June 1996 quarter. International revenues represented 47 percent of the quarterly total. Net income for the quarter was $25 million, or $.20 per share, compared with $60 million, or $.48 a share, in the same quarter a year ago. The Company's operating income for the quarter was $34 million, a sequential improvement of $150 million from its $116 million operating loss in the June 1996 quarter. Included in the fourth quarter's operating results was an adjustment of prior period restructuring charges which reduced pre-tax operating expenses by $28 million. Without this adjustment, net earnings would have been approximately $8 million, or $.06 per share. The Company experienced continued sequential growth in gross margins and reductions in operating expenses. Gross margins were 22 percent, compared to 18.5 percent in the June quarter, while operating expenses before the restructuring adjustment declined to $505 million from $519 million in the June quarter. "We continue to make progress in strengthening Apple's financial condition, as our $410 million in positive cash flow from operations during the quarter suggests," said Apple Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Fred D. Anderson. "We've reduced inventories by nearly $400 million since June and completed the quarter with over $1.7 billion in cash and short-term investments. Gross margins increased due to several factors, including declining component costs, improved manufacturing efficiencies, and sales of previously reserved inventory. We achieved further sequential reductions in operating expenses, primarily in general and administrative functions." "By increasing revenues sequentially and fortifying Apple's financial position in each of the last two quarters, we have achieved two very critical goals of Apple's transformation," said Apple Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio. "We remain confident about reaching sustainable profitability by the end of Q2'97. As we move forward, our challenges will be to extend our competitive leadership in key markets and to reclaim the mantle of industry pioneer and innovator. "The question before us is not 'Will Apple survive?'," said Dr. Amelio,"but rather, 'How will Apple establish leadership in the emerging digital era of the Internet and multimedia?' We plan to do so with strong management, a relentless dedication to quality, and a passionate commitment to our role as industry innovator." For the Company's fiscal year ended Sept. 27, 1996, revenues were $9.833 billion, an 11 percent decrease from the prior year. The net loss for the year was $816 million, or a loss of $6.59 per share, compared with net income of $424 million or $3.45 per share in fiscal 1995. The largest contributors to the fiscal 1996 loss during the year were after-tax inventory writedowns of $388 million in the second quarter, net restructuring charges of $113 million during the year, and after-tax warranty and related expenses that were approximately $126 million greater than historical rates would suggest. For the year, international revenues accounted for 52 percent of Apple's net sales, compared to 48 percent╩in fiscal 1995. Except for the historical information contained herein, the statements regarding establishing competitive leadership, effecting innovation, addressing quality issues, introducing new products, continuing focus on certain industry growth areas, and the timing of execution of the Company's business plans are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties. Potential risks and uncertainties include, without limitation, continued competitive pressures in the marketplace; the effect competitive factors and the Company's reaction to them may have on consumer and business buying decisions with respect to the Company's products; the consequences competitive factors and buying decisions may have on current inventory valuations; the ability of the Company to make timely delivery of successful technological innovations to the marketplace; the ability of the Company to successfully resolve its quality issues; the effect od any fupure losses on the Compafy's needs fmr liquidity;0the effect of the announced business restructuring on the future performance of the Company, especially the performance of the Company's employees; and the need for any future restructuring, and the effect that it might have on the performance of the Company. Sigurno da može dosta toga, ali i dalje ima stvari koje Amiga može a drugi sistemi ne mogu. Kod Amige ceo operativni sistem (sa GUI-jem, preemptive multitaskingom i sl.) zajedno sa odličnim editorom može da stane u toliko i da još ostane memorije za pristojan rad. Landi Outlines Apple's 1997 Product Plans Responding to an article published in the "San Jose Mercury News" on October 10, 1996, that reported on an interview with Chief Operating Officer Marco Landi, Apple Computer provided the following summary and clarification with respect to certain product plans: * While today's PowerPC microprocessors developed in collaboration by Motorola, Apple, and IBM run at clock speeds of up to 225 MHz, Apple is currently exploring the development of products based on future processors, using the PowerPC instruction set, that could potentially run at clock speeds of up to 500 MHz. * With respect to multiple-operating-system servers, Apple expects to offer servers capable of running AIX, Windows NT, and Mac OS by the end of fiscal year 1997 (calendar year Q3). * By the end of 1996, Apple expects to introduce a portable computing device designed for school children. * Apple expects to introduce a new PowerBook model on October 21, 1996. Another new PowerBook is expected to follow in the first quarter of 1997, with an enhanced version expected for release in the United States in the second half of the calendar year. Additionally, a model designed in collaboration with IBM, specifically for the Japanese market, is expected to follow in the second quarter of 1997. * Apple intends to aggressively pursue the home market with products at a range of price points. Although Apple has no plans today to introduce an Apple-labeled version of Pippin, Apple has received inquiries indicating interest in Pippin technology from a broad range of companies. * Apple expects to introduce a Performa system to meet the specific demands of the home and education market. Separately, Apple plans to offer specially designed software packages for elementary, middle school, and high school students, in addition to a games package. In the second half of next year, Apple is expecting to offer a high-end Performa system configured with a DOS-compatibility card running at 166 MHz. The products described above have not yet been announced and are not yet available. Accordingly, this information contains forward-looking statements that are subject to change based on various important factors. No one listened to my advice and they purchased a couple of Pentium boxes running Windows 95. Our firm has been using WordPerfect 5.1 for some time, and to run it from Windows '95, our two secretaries have to first open up a local printing utility, do nothing to it, close it, then double-click on the WordPerfect 5.1 icon. (Don't ask me why--it's beyond me.) Just this afternoon (after about six hours of installation time for the new systems) one of our secretaries was preparing a document in WP 5.1 when it all of a sudden asked her to insert WordPerfect Disk 2 in the drive and to press any key. We couldn't do anything to get out of that situation. We have no idea where that disk is and had to restart the program, losing her changes since the last save she did. I was impressed by their setup there: The ENTIRE operation (4 bakery lines producing Ritz crackers and the like) is run by the classic-case style Macs from the SE to the Color Classic. Each machine runs custom HyperCard stacks for each stage of the operation. From keeping track of the time the batter sits to quality assurance, Macs are in charge. They've never had to get rid of one. They even use Macs for the employee check in/check out system...just slide your ID card through the reader, and the Macintosh behind the glass greets you and even tell you if you have new mail. (Which can be accessed by other 'public' Macs throughout the bakery.) The Macs on the bakery line send all their data to a Mac server, which is in turn accessed by Quadra 660AVs throughout the building via publish-and-subscribe. The 660AVs (displaying on large televisions) use this info in a nice looking slide show of real-time efficiency, shift information, statistics and even weather maps that come directly from the web. (Automatically, of course.) They've even developed a HyperCard stack that answers the telephone and can follow TouchTone commands. This stack allows their employees on the road without PowerBooks to *hear* their email as _voicemail_ using (you guessed it) Speech Manager. These are just a few of the neat ideas that the Mac Gurus at this bakery have come up with using the Macintosh and HyperCard. Sadly, this Mac-based Nabisco plant is also the last hold-out in the U.S., as the rest have given in to that 'other' inferior stuff. (Of course, the Nabisco execs are continually amazed by all this neat stuff that they can't do on their PCs, and tolerate this anomaly.) ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? mac.1636 madamov,
Meet the new Performas Here's a message from the Apple's Mac Performa Division. Starting on October 19, there's a substantial price penalty for buying Wintel. On that day, we're introducing in the US two new Mac Performa products at very aggressive price points, and dramatically reducing the US prices of our existing products. The net impact of these changes is that we're now as much as $800 below the prices of name-brand Wintel PCs. You get 160 MHz from us for $1,499, the price you'd pay for 120 or 133 MHz from the name brand Wintel folks. Or you can now get a 200 MHz Performa 6400 bundled with the award-winning Avid Cinema video editing system for $2,699 -- about what you'd pay for a 200 MHz name-brand Wintel computer without video editing. At the end of this note is a chart with details on how our new lineup compares. We assume you'll hear about the price cuts through the normal channels, but what you may not hear is why we made them. We think we have an interesting strategy in place, and we want you to know about it. Thus this note. As Gil has said many times, we're trying to focus our resources on Apple's core markets. One of those markets is individual computing -- the use of PCs in homes, schools, and other settings where people don't have IS managers. The Performa products are aimed at that marketplace. A key theme in the feedback we received from people inside and outside Apple over the last few months was that we weren't doing a good job of hitting the price points at which most individuals buy. We think we've now resolved that. The new Performa line starts at $1,499, and our older products will be available at even lower price points. It's reasonable to ask why we didn't make these price changes months ago, when we introduced the Performa 6400 tower computers. The bottom line is that our costs were much higher at that time. We've been working furiously to bring down our manufacturing costs, and those efforts are starting to pay off rapidly. We're making a good financial return at these new prices. This price change is not a short-term promotion or fire sale; it's a permanent change in our pricing structure. (By the way, the street prices for Apple's Power Macintosh computers are also coming down through increased dealer discounts, although Apple is not making a formal price change to them at this time. These announcements are US only. Prices and availability vary by geography, and in many cases our introduction prices overseas were more aggressive than the US prices.) Value, not price So, does that mean we're now positioning ourselves as the price leader of personal computing? Nope. What we do want to be is the *value* leader for individual computing. We're not all the way there yet, but October 19 is a good start. Here are some of the other value-building steps we've taken recently: --Making it easy to create. The new Avid Cinema video-editing system, available exclusively with the new Mac Performas, truly makes it easy and affordable for normal people to create videos. So families at home can create videos of the kids to send to the grandparents. Small businesses can create promotional videos that they post to the Web. And students can create amazing presentations. We intend to popularize video in the 1990s the same way we popularized paper graphics in the 1980s. The Avid Cinema-equipped Performas are now in production in the US. --The best learning system. The new Performas include an innovative user learning system that combines video and animation to not only demonstrate the basics of the computer, but also teach users to work with advanced features such as video editing and virtual reality. --No-compromises features. The Mac Performa line has a reputation of being the underfed, wimpy younger brother to the Power Mac line. With our new product line we've changed that substantially. Although there are a few features we still need to work, today you can get fantastic price-performance from the Performa line, plus leading-edge features such as Avid Cinema. --Internet assistance. One of the biggest complaints people have about the Web is that it's hard to find things. Every new Performa in the US comes with access to the Personalized Internet Launcher, a service which guides users to Web content customized to their interests. This is a modest start toward a big idea -- using the Internet to create a comprehensive set of services for our customers. You'll hear more about this throughout 1997. --Compatibility. As you probably know, every Mac Performa comes with the ability to read and write Windows and DOS files. In 1997, we're looking to aggressively include the ability to run Windows. It's already available as an option for all our computers, but you'll see it as a standard feature on at least some of our products in 1997. --Specific solutions for specific needs. It's a little-known fact that Apple sells more than 20 different software application bundles in the K-12 market. These are standalone products tested and integrated by Apple and designed to help specific types of user accomplish specific tasks. We're looking to bring this business model into the consumer marketplace. The beginning is four "Quality Bundles" that we've just released for the Christmas season in the US, and special solution configurations for the Performa models sold in Europe. (Three of the US bundles are focused on home learning, one is entertainment). If you'd like more information on the new Mac Performa line, check out the new Performa web site at http://www.performa.apple.com. The site should go live on October 18. A LETTER FROM CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER ELLEN HANCOCK ON APPLE'S OS STRATEGY AND THE "HARMONY" RELEASE October 21, 1996 Apple Developers: As you know, my team and I have been working on redefining Apple's OS roadmap to better meet our customers' and developers' needs. While we have not yet finalized these plans, I wanted to give you an update as to where we stand. As previously announced, we have moved from a monolithic OS release strategy to one that delivers releases on a regular schedule. We believe that this more frequent release strategy provides Mac OS customers and developers with the power and flexibility they're demanding. We feel it is important to deliver improved products and emerging technologies to developers and customers on a timely basis. The first of these scheduled releases, code-named "Harmony," is expected to be made available in January. The Harmony release will include features such as OpenDoc and Cyberdog in the OS, along with a new Extension Manager, an updated LaserWriter driver, and an installer front end. Going forward, we will continue to provide features that improve the reliability and performance of the system. Much of the work done under the code name of "Copland" will be brought into future versions of System 7.x as well as Mac OS 8. The enhancements that you have asked for, such as the delivery of a new kernel, I/O system, and file system, remain active projects. At this point it's not possible to make statements about delivery schedules of these specific components. Let me briefly touch on the issue of compatibility between System 7 and future OS releases from Apple. It is difficult to provide full backward compatibility without sacrificing new capabilities, performance, or system stability. We feel that our number one goal should be to deliver a robust OS. Our intention has always been to deliver cutting-edge technology that makes our developers and customers successful. That said, we recognize the investments that you and your customers have made in the Mac OS, and we want to preserve those investments as much as possible. Compatibility will continue to be an important priority for Apple's Mac OS plans--and we intend to address the transition issues faced by Apple's developers and customers. To reflect the changes in our Mac OS strategy and give you a place to find the most current information we have, we're reconstructing our Mac OS information on the Web. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive site that serves as the repository for all significant information concerning the Mac OS as we move forward. If you try to access the Mac OS 8 website directly, you will instead see a transition page that announces the restructuring of our Mac OS websites. You'll also see links to other Apple pages including the Mac OS release strategy, Apple Developer World, the main Apple page, the Mac OS site, the Apple Software Update ftp site, and the Mac OS Software & Hardware Guide. I know you're all eager to hear more information regarding Apple's agenda for the Mac OS. We appreciate your patience as we resolve the remaining decisions and rest assured that we will continue to keep you informed of any information as soon as possible. Until then, thank you for your understanding and continued support. Sincerely, Ellen Hancock Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer Apple Computer, Inc.

Vardavas) Hey Guy -- With permission, I am forwarding to you the relevant part of an email I recently got from a friend of mine on the WELL. She mentioned to me in passing that she and her husband had bought a Mac (knowing that I loved them), and I asked her if she could say what exactly it was that had caused her and her husband to come over. ("Once you go Mac, you'll never go back!") This was her reply. I thought it was so exuberant and funny that I asked her to let me pass it on to you. Being a recovering Wintel person, she did not recognize your name; she said only that if you ever made a movie out of her story she wanted to be played by Kathleen Turner! ;> ------------------ And now I will try to calm down and tell you about the Mac. We've always had PCs. The first was an 8086, then we got a 386 with Win3.1. I thought win3.1 was kind of a silly pain in the ass so I mostly ignored it and used DOS versions of Word and Quattro Pro. All the programs were menu driven by then so why add a memory and disk hogging GUI on top of it? But I was pretty comfortable with it from the start. Just didn't have a lot of use for it. Then our daughter got a 486 and as soon as it came out, put Windows95 on it. I hate Windows95. My biggest gripe- it's the update of Win3.1 but it's different enough that you have to find your way around all over again. I don't give a shit what anyone says, to me it seems less intuitive than Win3.1 . I've noticed that the people who like it better are the type who like to spend hours screwing with their computers to get them to run right. I admit that I enjoy doing that too, but it gets old after awhile. And I have a husband who pretty much wouldn't touch the machines mentioned above with a ten foot pole. So this sets the stage for our trip to the computer store. We were going to buy a pentium. Every PC was running Win95. I told the nice salesman that I hated Window95, couldn't we pleeeeese have something else? He said we couldn't get Win3.1 anymore but if we were willing to spend the extra money, there was always Mac. He showed us one. Do you remember Wind in the Willows, Mr.Toad and the motor car? My husband put his hand on the mouse, looked into the screen and said, "I love it, I want one." A couple of days later at breakfast, he told our daughter that he thought he could do anything with this computer. I firmly believe that never in a million years would this have happened with that Pentium. And he feels that he didn't just buy a computer. He feels like he's become a part of something. This computer has charisma up the ass! As for me, let me ask you a few questions. Have you ever had to edit your autoexec file? Have you ever had to go through your sys config file trying to find out where that funky software you just tried to install has screwed things up? People say you learn more about computers using a PC. If you want to keep the son of a bitch running, you bloody well better! ; - ) ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? He asked if I knew where he could get one. I suggested that he download one called HMO-Plus from our department's Apple web server <http://www.chem.uky.edu/software/>. To his dismay, the program was Mac-only and he needed one that was PC-based. I then referred him to a PC-only program called CACAO. Later in the day I got this reply: "Aaargh. I downloaded the Cacao software. I *cannot* get it to run on a PC under Windows (or DOS), and I have tried everything I can think of. The manual is *@#$@#@ useless* with regard to installation and getting started. The authors have been very irresponsible about making sure their software is easy to install and use. Even though I am a Windows man myself, I have to admit this problem is typical of DOS and Windows shareware authors, and even some commercial vendors. So I tried the HMO-Plus software (Mac). This downloaded very nicely and runs without any problem. I am going to try it out on my class. Unfortunately, our chemistry computer lab is all IBM, so they will have to go to the Library to use Macs." Which once again underscores the point that if you want to do it right the first time, buy a Mac. Touch-3D, version 2.0 now shipping. Designers have always used models to visualize their ideas. Such models require craftsmanship and a lot of time consuming manual work. A few years ago computers entered the design world. A completely new and exciting set of tools emerged; computer graphics, computer aided design, 3D modelling and rendering. These programs are often very powerful in creating photo realistic images, having color, surface structure, shadows, and so on. The problem is that these images are still really flat, and lack a true 3D feeling. Most designers still prefer physical models which are easier to understand. You can move around them. Feel. Touch... This is where Touch-3D comes in, with its ability to unfold just about anything. Uses for Touch-3D A few examples uses are: scale models, concept design, mock-ups, quick prototyping, architectural models, sheet metal work, production preparation/optimisation, and so on. Drawing with Touch-3D Touch-3D comes with powerful range of drawing and modelling tools, allowing you to create sophisticated 3D models, fast. How to unfold. How do you unfold a model in Touch-3D? The unfolding function works like a view, just like the Front, Top, Side, and Perspective views. If you modify your model in 3D, and click on the Unfold view button, Touch-3D updates the unfolded pattern automatically. Communication. Touch-3D can communicate with other programs. You can create your models or parts of models in your favorite 3D-CAD program, a 3D modelling program to an ordinary 2D illustration program. Touch-3D reads files from a substantial number of programs, calculates the unfolded shape of the model(s), and exports the result again. Touch-3D supports import and export of 2D & 3D DXF-files, 2D & 3D MiniCad text files, 3DMF (QuickDraw 3D), and editable Adobe Illustrator files (2D). Check out the web-site at <http://www.algonet.se/~ludesign> for more info or download a demo.

> Monitor?? I ide li uz njega neki bundle software ?

Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 11:02:45 -0400 From: MacWay@aol.com Subject: SF Examiner Person on Macintosh Advantage Message-ID: <961022110245_1779286240@emout06.mail.aol.com> Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better, Keyword: Market by market, Publishing This follow-up message is from: <cg@gulker.com> To answer your request (and a number of similar ones about using Macintoshes in publishing environments) here are reasons that Macs make sense in the publishing environment, based on my experience at the San Francisco Examiner. - Macs offer greater editorial control and greater productivity than proprietary systems or Windows. Postscript is broken on Windows, including Win95 and NT. Dramatic editorial layouts and complex display ads are easier to create and much more likely to print, error-free, first time from Macs than Windows. Ditto for Glitch-free classifieds, TV grids and stocks pages. There are non-postscript publishing systems, but they offer limited creative possibilities, and are expensive and difficult to modify. - Macs are cheaper to support and have a much lower 5-year cost of ownership (25% of the cost of supporting Winows 3.1 according to KPMG and Andersen, in separate surveys). Windows clones are cheap to buy but require much more effort to configure, maintain, upgrade and support. Try to talk a reporter or artist into fixing a config.sys problem over the telephone, and this will become clear. Many Mac environments are installed and maintained by non-MIS end-users. - Macs are more intuitive, easier to use and have a lower training burden than Windows. While Win95 does Ok on simple productivity apps, Mac pulls ahead for complex software like Xpress, Photoshop and Illustrator. - Mac hardware is more reliable than PCs, especially clones. Mac desktops have a return rate of less than 1%, compared with about 20% for many inexpensive PC clones. Hardware computer failures often require days or weeks to fix, and are the most disruptive disasters in deadline-driven environments. With 52 workstations, you may have to buy 62 cheap clones to have enough spares to keep everybody up (and think of the work to constantly remove and install the boxes). - Macs have more features built-in, like SCSI, usable RGB output, graphics acceleration, sound, video and 10-base T connectors that are add-ons on clones. "Cheap" clones can often be more expensive than "expensive" Macs when all the pieces are added, and the integration of all the pieces from different vendors can be nightmarish. One large ad agency tested a high-end Mac against a high-end Windows NT workstation: the Mac was up and running productively the same day it arrived - the NT box was still not in production after 4 months of configuration work. Both machines' initial cost was the same, but they were making money on the Mac. - MacOS servers are one of the best-kept secrets of successful production environments. Even at small newspapers, client-server systems can get VERY complex. MacOS servers greatly reduce the complexity of these systems, and can be managed by non-MIS workers(a graphics person named Marge was a crack server administrator at the Examiner). When a server goes down at midnite on Christmas eve, pray that it's a Mac - anyone can hit the reset button (don't try this on a Novell, NT or UNIX server). - Custom work flow has the greatest potential to reduce labor costs, but is among the most expensive and difficult challenges, usually requiring programmers to build and maintain. Programmers don't often have an intuitive understanding of the job: AppleScript and scriptable tools like Quark Xpress and FileMaker allow people who understand what needs to get done to automate repetetive jobs - TV grids, classifieds, stocks etc. The Examiner reduced labor on stocks and TV pages by 80% with Quark and Applescript. - The largest installed base of newspaper systems? It's Baseview, an all-Mac solution with 700 installations, far greater than all of the proprietary systems combined. Hmmmm... - Lastly, in commercial print publishing use Mac has 80% share, proprietary systems have 15% and and Windows 5%. There are very good reasons for this... ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? EXPONENTIAL UNVEILS WORLD'S FASTEST PC MICROPROCESSOR AT 533MHz Exponential X704TM Microprocessor More Than Twice the Speed of Competitive Solutions; Elevates PowerPCTM and MacintoshTM Systems to New Levels of Performance SAN JOSE, Calif., October 21, 1996 - Exponential Technology, emerging as one of the industry's premier developers of high-performance microprocessor products and technologies, today announced the world's fastest PC microprocessor, the Exponential X704. The Exponential X704 is designed for high-end PowerPC-compatible systems. With a core clock speed of 533MHz - more than twice the speed of any PC microprocessor solution currently available - the Exponential X704 brings workstation-class processing power to PCs, raising the performance bar for personal computing. "Today's announcement will cause the industry to stand up and take notice," said Satjiv Chahil, Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Apple Computer. "We think the Exponential X704 has the potential to redefine PC multimedia computing, and bring a major competitive advantage to the PowerPC platform and the Macintosh product family. This innovation should be especially attractive to power-Macintosh users who demand uncompromised performance for their high-end graphics and multimedia applications." Driven by users' insatiable appetite for faster PC performance, the Exponential X704 is specifically designed to meet the extraordinary processing demands of compute-intensive applications - including desktop publishing, image processing, Web page creation, video editing, digital animation, and high-end graphics/multimedia applications. The Exponential X704 not only meets, but exceeds these demands, offering a level of PC performance unmatched by competitive solutions currently available. At 533MHz, the Exponential X704 unleashes the power of the most demanding professional Macintosh/PowerPC applications - including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and AfterEffects, and Macromedia FreeHand - allowing users to do more in less time for increased productivity. "At 533MHz, Exponential's microprocessor really screams," said Mark Kirstein, Group Manager, PC Market Services of In-Stat, a semiconductor market research firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona. "Exponential's innovative BiCMOS microprocessor technology and impressive product roadmap gives them a substantial advantage in the highly competitive semiconductor industry." The Exponential X704 microprocessor will enter volume production in the second quarter of 1997. System announcements are also expected in the second quarter of 1997. A Sustainable Advantage Exponential believes it is the first start-up semiconductor company to aim from its inception for a performance leadership position in the microprocessor market. Exponential's microprocessor design is based on an innovative approach to a semiconductor manufacturing technology called "BiCMOS." Exponential's BiCMOS design uses a well-established "bipolar" process, known for its ultra-fast speed, to form the core logic of the microprocessor. A more common "CMOS" process is used for on-chip memory. Exponential's unique BiCMOS approach enables PC manufacturers to build and deliver competitively priced, high-performance systems years before competitive solutions can reach similar microprocessor speed levels. (Please see Exponential's BiCMOS Technology white paper for more information.) "With the announcement of our 533MHz microprocessor, Exponential is firmly establishing a position of leadership within the industry," said Rick Shriner, President and CEO, Exponential Technology. "Our innovative BiCMOS process clearly differentiates our product from competitive solutions." "In addition, the unique combination of personnel we have assembled with expertise in microprocessor design and bipolar technology truly sets Exponential apart within the industry, giving us a long-term competitive advantage," Shriner said. Licensed PowerPC Architecture Designed to provide high performance while maintaining compatibility with established industry specifications and standards, the Exponential X704 is fully compatible with all existing PowerPC/Macintosh applications. With its unparalleled processing power, the Exponential X704 will unleash the full power of these applications, giving users a robust PC productivity tool. In addition, the Exponential X704 is fully compatible with existing PowerPC hardware standards, including the 60X system bus, and is also compatible with evolving industry standards, including the Common Hardware Reference Platform (CHRP). This allows PC manufacturers to easily design and incorporate Exponential X704-based systems into their existing product lines, while minimizing the implementation costs normally passed on to consumers. Industry Support for Exponential In addition to Apple, Exponential has also received wide support from IBM and Motorola, the remaining members of the AIM alliance (a consortium of companies guiding the direction of the PowerPC platform), as well as other key players in the PowerPC industry: "IBM congratulates Exponential on their development of a new PowerPC microprocessor," said Ron Black, Director of PowerPC Microprocessor Business, IBM Microelectronics. "The Exponential microprocessor is clear proof of the strength of the PowerPC architecture." "We think it is a positive step that microprocessor designers like Exponential can take PowerPC technology in a different, new direction," said Phil Pompa, Director of Marketing, Motorola RISC Microprocessor Division. "It will help grow the applications leadership already achieved by the PowerPC architecture." "Today's announcement marks an important step in the evolution of the PowerPC platform," said Steve Kahng, President and CEO, Power Computing Corporation. "Exponential's high-speed microprocessor brings a great advantage to the platform and will enable Power to continue our track record of leading-edge MacOS performance." "Exponential's microprocessor promises to raise the performance bar for desktop computing," said Peter Mehring, General Manager and Vice President of Research and Development at UMAX Computer Corporation. "This announcement should be of special interest to users who need powerful system performance for their compute-intensive graphics and multimedia applications, but aren't willing to pay workstation-class prices." Very cool. Had seats a long way from the stage. Not so cool. But I was behind the light/sound booth and, beside the lighting tech, was a Performa 5260CD running at least part of the lighting control system. VERY cool. 2) One of my co-workers (a long-time Mac fan as well) was back East in Saskatchewan visiting his wife's family. Her mother had a surprise for them when they arrived -- she had gone out and bought herself a computer so that she could be "on the Net." The problem? Yup, you guessed it -- windoze. So, they called an ISP in the area who actually came out to her house (!!! -- only in Saskatchewan, I guess) to set up here connection to the internet. FIVE hours later, he was still there. The service guy lamented that he wished "everyone just had a Mac. It's so much easier." With that comment in mind, a discussion ensued, and the computer was packed back up into its box, and exchanged for a Performa. ISP guy came out to do an install again. Startup, setup, restart, and on the net. Estimated time? 5 minutes. ________________ Do you believe in Macintosh? CLARIS REPORTS $236.2 MILLION IN ANNUAL REVENUE SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Oct. 22, 1996 -- Claris Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple Computer, Inc., today announced revenue for its fiscal quarter and fiscal year which ended Sept. 27, 1996. Claris, which is among the world's eight largest vendors of applications software for personal computers, reported annual revenue of $236.2 million, and quarterly revenue of $56.6 million. Annual revenue increased 42 percent over Claris revenue of $166.6 million in fiscal year 1995. The high growth in revenue year-over-year was due largely to strong sales of Apple-brand software, which Claris began distributing and selling one year ago, Claris said. Revenue from new and existing Claris-brand software also grew during the year, the company said. New products were especially important to Claris in the final quarter of its fiscal year. Claris Home Page, the easy software solution for creating World Wide Web pages, first shipped in August and accounted for strong revenue in the fourth quarter. New Japanese versions of FileMaker Pro 3.0 database software, ClarisWorks integrated software, and ClarisImpact business- graphics software, all for Windows and Macintosh, shipped in the fourth quarter and created strong revenue in Japan, where Claris is a leading vendor of Windows and Macintosh software. Small business customers and K-12 education users continue to be among the company's most important markets. Last quarter, Claris received the prestigious EdNET HERO Award, given annually to the vendor which has made the most significant positive impact on education through technology. This year's award recognized Claris leadership in easy-to-use software for teachers and students, such as ClarisWorks and Claris Home Page, which has helped drive computer use in schools. Claris focus on usability and customer satisfaction was reinforced last quarter in a study by Dataquest, a Gartner Group Company. The study found that small-business users rate FileMaker Pro and ClarisWorks higher in reliability, ease of learning, value for the money and overall satisfaction than Microsoft Access and Microsoft Office. "Our results and the recognition from our customers indicate Claris is on the right track in delivering simply powerful software solutions, and in satisfying customers' desire for usability and value," said Guerrino De Luca, Claris president. Except for the historical information contained herein, the statements regarding revenue growth, revenue from new products, continuing focus on certain market segments, and the timing of execution of Claris' business plans are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties. Potential risks and uncertainties include, without limitation, continued competitive pressures in the marketplace; the effect competitive factors and Claris' reaction to them may have on consumer and business buying decisions with respect to Claris' products; and the ability of Claris to make timely delivery of successful technological innovations to the marketplace. More information on potential factors that could affect Claris' financial results is included in the public filings of Claris' parent, Apple Computer, Inc., specifically its Form 10-Q for the third fiscal quarter. Apple Extends Korean Language Support to Customers with Multilingual Computing Needs CUPERTINO, Calif.--Oct. 23, 1996--Expanding its growing family of multiple language solutions, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the Korean Language Kit, providing users the easiest way to switch effortlessly between their computer's main language and Korean. The Korean Language Kit enables users to enter, edit, and print text in Korean or mix Korean with other languages in the same document. In conjunction with a world-ready Internet browser, the Korean Language Kit also enables customers around the world to view Korean websites. The Korean Language Kit supports Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and Hanja, the ideographic Chinese characters commonly used in Korean. Korean language support is especially important in language education and multilingual desktop publishing markets, as well as with multinational corporations that do business with Korea. This language support is also important to users of Macintosh and Mac OS-compatible systems in the home and business market who have Korean language needs. Also, since the Korean Language Kit is compatible with other Apple language kits users can install additional kits on the same Macintosh or Mac OS-compatible computer. "Apple is very pleased to be able to offer the Korean Language Kit to multilingual users worldwide," said Jim Gable, vice president of AppleSoft marketing. "With the introduction of this kit, Apple now offers a range of language kits for double-byte languages." Key Features The Korean Language Kit includes five high-quality Apple TrueType fonts, documentation in both English and Korean, and a set of transparent keyboard labels to enable users to customize their keyboard. The TrueType fonts contain both Hangul and Hanja characters and can function with or without Apple's QuickDraw GX technology. In addition, each font includes over 2,000 special symbol characters for various desktop publishing needs. Apple's full-featured input method, called the Power Input Method, offers the user a selection of keyboard layouts, including two of the most popular Korean keyboard layouts and two Romaja input modes (phonetic) for easy phonetic-based input of Korean by non-native speakers. In addition, the input method allows the user to easily convert Hangul to Hanja, as well as to create a personal dictionary via the Hanja Dictionary Utility. To ensure that the input method is easy to use for both students of the Korean language and native speakers, the Pencil Menu component of the interface can be displayed in English or Korean. Primary Markets for Apple Language Kits The Apple Language Kit family of products is targeted primarily at four customer profiles: -- Education--for language labs and schools that need interactive language learning programs or language support for regional studies, the kits enable teachers and students to create assignments and projects in multiple languages. -- Large business--for multinational corporations required to create documents, communication materials, and product information in multiple languages. -- Foreign language services and products--for desktop publishers who need to create multilingual and localized brochures, web pages, business cards, sign boards, advertisements, marketing materials and newspapers. -- Home market--for foreign language speakers in the home who want to create letters and documents using the language of their choice, as well as browse foreign language web sites. The Korean Language Kit is based on WorldScript, the Mac OS technology which enables base system support for complex and ideographic writing systems. The language kit can be used with world ready applications that take advantage of WorldScript, as well as with Mac OS-compatible applications that have been localized in Korean. Most Japanese-localized applications will also work with the Korean Language Kit. The Korean Language Kit is part of a growing family of Apple language solutions that offer customers an affordable way to internationalize their Macintosh system. In addition to the Korean Language Kit, Apple's multilingual product offerings include the Japanese Language Kit, Chinese Language Kit, Chinese Dictation Kit, Hebrew Language Kit, Arabic Language Kit, and Cyrillic Language Kit. System Requirements, Pricing and Availability The Korean Language Kit requires a Macintosh system with 68020 processor, or later, and 5MB of RAM; Power Macintosh or Mac OS-compatible systems require 8MB of RAM. All computer systems require either a floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive. Macintosh System 7.1 or later is needed. Macintosh System 7.5, QuickDraw GX, and a QuickDraw GX-based application are required to take advantage of QuickDraw GX features. Apple Open Transport 1.1.1 Enhances Mac OS Networking Performance and Reliability CUPERTINO, Calif.--Oct. 25, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc., today announced the availability of Apple Open Transport 1.1.1, an enhanced version of Apple's standards-based networking and communications system for Macintosh and Mac OS-compatible computers. Significance Open Transport 1.1.1 is an update for Mac OS-based systems currently running Open Transport 1.1, and is a recommended upgrade for all Open Transport users. In addition to bug fixes that increase overall compatibility, performance and stability, the update provides significant performance enhancements for Mac OS-based Internet and intranet servers and includes support for the new Open Transport/PPP implementation. Additional Mac OS Systems Supported Open Transport 1.0 began shipping in 1995 as a standard feature of Apple's new PCI-based Power Macintosh systems. Open Transport 1.1 added support for most 68030, 68040, and additional PowerPC-based systems, and was included in System 7.5.3. Open Transport 1.1.1 adds support for the additional PowerPC-based Mac OS systems, including 5200, 5300, 6200, 6300-series Performa, and Power Macintosh computers, which were not supported by Open Transport 1.1. The latest PowerPC-based Performa systems, including the popular Performa 6400, utilize PCI-bus and support both Open Transport 1.1, and Open Transport 1.1.1. Improvements and Bug Fixes Open Transport 1.1.1 includes a series of enhancements to its TCP/IP implementation that improves the performance and reliability of Mac OS-based Internet and intranet servers, including: --Resolved a bug where busy web servers sometimes accepted no new inbound connections for about 30 seconds at periodic intervals; --Optimized rate at which connections can be accepted and closed, increasing overall server capacity; --Enhanced ability of developers to designate additional memory for Open Transport on dedicated server machines, thereby allowing better system tuning for server use; --Enhanced the Domain Name Resolver code to better handle tens of thousands lookups done by busy web and Internet mail servers; --Negated a cause of regular crashes on busy servers when large numbers of lookups were performed. The update also includes improvements of interest to users of Mac OS-based client systems, including: --Reduced or removed cases where Open Transport could cause memory fragmentation; --Improved compatibility with the PowerBook sleep feature reducing the occurrence of freezes when waking from sleep and reducing the occurrence of being switched to LocalTalk when changing docks and waking from sleep; --Enhanced compatibility with Apple Remote Access (ARA), reducing the occurrence of situations where some network devices could not be seen or used even though they were connected; --Enhanced Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) that in most cases reduces the time to get a server assigned address at system startup. It also fixed a bug that could cause a loss of TCP/IP network access if the configured DHCP lease time exceeded 24 days; --Provided a utility to reduce the occurrence of Alert messages when using AppleTalk from a home network connected via an ISDN bridge. Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Support Open Transport 1.1.1 includes support for Open Transport/PPP, which is currently undergoing a public beta seed on the Internet and will be released later this year. OT/PPP is the first PPP implementation for the Mac OS to take full advantage of the standards-based Open Transport STREAMS architecture. By utilizing STREAMS, Open Transport/PPP offers an extensible foundation for enhancements and is prepared for the transition to a modern OS foundation. Open Transport/PPP is also the first PPP to offer the performance and stability of native code on PowerPC-based Mac OS systems. System Requirements, Pricing, and Availability Open Transport is required on Mac OS-based computers that include PCI-bus, and is optional on 68030, 68040, and PowerPC-based systems that do not use PCI-bus. The Open Transport 1.1.1 upgrade is available to users with access to the Internet, America Online or CompuServe at no charge beyond any connect charges. Open Transport 1.1.1 can be downloaded from the Networking-Communications area of Apple's Software Updates Archives (see http://www.info.apple.com/swupdates/ for a list of Apple's Software Updates sites). Open Transport 1.1.1 can also be found on Apple sites on America Online (keyword-applecomputer), CompuServe (shortcut-GO APLSUP). Starting Oct. 28, 1996, customers in the United States can order the Open Transport 1.1.1 Update on CD for U.S. $13 by calling 1-800-293-6617, offer number 1407. The fulfillment program is scheduled to run through Jan. 31, 1997. Open Transport 1.1.1 is an update for Mac OS-based systems currently running Open Transport 1.1. Customers of all previous System 7.5 family releases can update free of charge to 7.5.3 and Open Transport 1.1 using System 7.5, Update 2.0, which is also available in the Apple's Software Updates Archives. Open Transport 1.1 is also available as a retail package, Apple part number M4252Z/A, which allows installation on System 7.1, 7.1.1, and 7.1.2.
