Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 02:18:49 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - Funky Software and Peripherals on the G3 Keyword: Advocacy, Macintosh in Action This tidbit is from: David Colton, <coltonda@netins.net> A few of the recent Evangelist postings have mentioned software that has been around for a while. I would like to mention some software we have used for awhile and a good experience we had this week with the software and with the software company. I work for the maintenance department of a school district and we just recently upgraded our Quadra 950 to a G3/266. One of the applications we moved over to the new machine was MacDraft. We've used MacDraft since we had our first Mac, a IIci (which we still use). Running on the G3, MacDraft blazes. It launches in about two to three seconds! When we first saw this, we emailed Microspot and reminded them what a great product they had and how we appreciated their support of the Macintosh. We also let them know what their product was like on a G3! They were kind enough to email back thanking us for using MacDraft. Well it seems that the school district's technology department received an old HP plotter many years ago and recently, while cleaning house, they rediscovered the donation buried in a storeroom. They called and asked if I wanted the plotter. In a school district, the maintenance department is often low on the food chain and we get a lot of hand me downs. So, yes I took the plotter. The first thing I did was call the HP tech support line. The Mac support department of HP was most helpful and gave me two names of vendors who could possibly supply a driver for this model of plotter. You guessed it, Microspot was one of the vendors. I gave them a call, they recognized us from our email, I ordered the driver and they delivered it post haste. The driver came with a very complete manual with drawings for cable pin-outs for all sorts of supported plotters. So I made up a cable, installed the software driver, plugged the plotter into the G3 and about the same time Bill Gates was plugging in his scanner, I was plotting from one of the fastest machines around, using some great software thats been around, to a plotter that had been around. The driver is called MacPlot Pro and believe me the interface is very, very Macintosh. When you configure how the different sized and colored pens are in installed the plotter, a Macintosh desktop appears on the screen and the process is pure drag and drop. So when you are sending out your "thank you for supporting Macintosh" emails, don't forget our friends at Microspot, home of MacDraft and many other software products for the Mac. At a minimum visit their web site at <http://microspot.com> And, just to give HP a thank you, the plotter works great! I'm not associated with either company, just another satisfied Mac user! >From your Evanglista in the corn fields of Iowa, David Colton

Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 02:06:19 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - Illuminating Insights Going From Mac to Win95 (Temporarily) This tidbit is from: Lethargy <lethargy@usa.net> I use both a Macintosh Quadra and a Pentium computer at home, however my parents only use the Macintosh. Recently our AppleVision 1710av monitor went in for repair and they were forced to use my Pentium for sending and receiving email. There is at least *some* similarity between the MacOS and Windows 95 so I figured it wouldn't be too bad... but as I watched them in action I noticed a couple of things (and they were only using Eudora Light, not Windows Explorer, mind you): * My parents constantly pressed the right mouse button instead of the left. The single button Macintosh mouse encourages you to place only your index finger on the top of your mouse. On a two-button mouse, this single finger falls - you guessed it - directly over the right mouse button. They felt uncomfortable placing two fingers on top of the mouse. * They were constantly bringing background windows to the foreground. I eventually realised that they were trying to use the scroll bars! Scroll bars of background windows in Windows 95 do not dim out or disappear as they do in the MacOS (imagine that) - only the title bar dims. So they were constantly clicking the scroll bars of background windows instead of foreground windows. * They would inadvertedly press the "Insert" key and whatever they typed at the cursor would replace what was already there. This confused them since the Macintosh does not have a "Insert/Replace" mode. * My mother did not know how to get accent characters and bullets. When I told her that she had to hold down Alt and type "0149" on the keypad to get a bullet instead of typing Option-8, and hold down Alt and type "0233" to get , instead of typing Option-E-e, she was aghast. Of course, there is always the Character Map program, but the letters are tiny and finding the special character you're looking for is like playing "Where's Waldo". Not to mention that the equivalent Key Caps on the Macintosh gives you a visual representation of the keyboard which helps you to remember which keys to press the next time. * They kept pressing Alt-Z instead of Control-Z for Undo. The Alt key is positioned right where the Command key is on a Macintosh. Also, the position of the Control key on Windows computers makes you stretch your fingers more to perform keyboard shortcuts. And now that *all* PC keyboards come with that handy-dandy Windows key getting in your way, performing something like Control-Alt-2 is a bigger pain-in-the-wrist than before. Can you say "Twister"? Of course I've noticed a couple of things myself: * There isn't a decent Note Pad for Windows 95. The one that comes with Windows is just a basic text editor. I want one that lets me keep pages of information, like a real note pad, and automatically saves the information when I close it (just like the Macintosh). I did check on the internet for one, but they were all over 1 megabyte compressed! No wonder Dell and Gateway are shipping their systems with 6-gigabyte and larger disk drives. * There is no keyboard shortcut for creating a new folder as in the MacOS. Where you would normally press Command-N, you now have to right click, go to the *bottom* of the pop up menu, click on "New", move the cursor to the submenu and click on "Folder". Thanks Microsoft. * There is no keyboard shortcut for getting information about a file or folder. Also the "Properties" command (equivalent of Get Info) is at the *bottom* of both the File menu and the pop up menu. * Renaming a file on the Macintosh is easy - click on the name of an icon and it highlights it or, highlight an icon and press Return. But in Windows, you have to highlight the icon first, *then* click on the name before you can change it. And don't press Enter thinking it'll highlight the name for you - it'll launch the icon. * When you choose the "View: Details" command in Windows and "Arrange by Name" it sticks all the folders at the top alphabetically and all the files at the bottom alphabetically. As a matter of fact, no matter how you "Arrange" the window, Windows 95 puts all the folders at the top of the window. * Windows has no real provision for storing icon positions. It only remembers the last few windows that you've moved the icons to absolute positions within the window. So in Windows you wouldn't want to arrange your desktop the way lots of Mac users arrange it - with icons along the edges of the desktop. Because one day you might start up your machine and find all the icons "Arranged by Name", Windows style, in the left hand side of the desktop. Also starting up the computer in Safe Mode effectively destroys all your precious icon locations when next you start up in Normal Mode. Nothing like that happens when you start a Mac with extensions off. * Speaking of which, it's easy to turn individual extensions and control panels on and off using Extensions Manager, as well as installing and removing them. In Win95 it's very hard to isolate memory resident (equivalent of Extensions) software conflicts. You can't disable individual memory resident programs. However you do get the choice of starting up with barely nothing (Safe Mode). And pray that your Windows program comes with an uninstaller. Mac users love to laugh when they hear of these uninstallers - "You need a program to remove a program? Hahaha! Good one! What happens when you need to remove the program that removes the programs? Get another program? Hahaha!" * Windows has no provision for showing you the total size of the contents of a folder without getting *each and every* folder's "Properties". Mac users have the "Calculate folder sizes" option for seeing the size of all the folders at a glance. * There is no easy way to get a screenshot in Windows without downloading a shareware package (example Screen Thief). Other than than you have to press "Print Screen", go to Paintbrush, create a new full screen document and press paste. And if you're running in 16 bit colour or higher, you have to save in 24 bit BMP format, which yields files *bigger* than 1 megabyte. Mac users just press Command-Shift-3. Oh, and did I mention that full screen full colour Macintosh PICT images are typically 200 kilobytes? I am beginning to see why so many PC's come with Zip drives standard now. * When you put a folder into the Recycle Bin, it puts the *individual files* in there and does not preserve the folder structure. In the Macintosh the folder structure is preserved so that if we change our mind we can yank the whole folder out of there. Not so in Windows. Speaking of the Recycle Bin, if you're not careful setting the Recycle Bin reserved space, it will start deleting files even before you select "Empty Recycle Bin". And compared with the Macintosh it takes forever to move files to the Recycle Bin and forever to delete them. * The Control-F keyboard in Windows only works if you have a Windows Explorer window open. That is, if you're on the desktop and feel like looking for a file, you *have* to use the Start menu: Find files or folders command. Also the Find command is very inefficient. My Macintosh Quadra is supposedly 10 times slower than this Pentium yet it finds files by name on multiple volumes in 2 - 4 seconds. By contrast the Pentium machine takes over 10 seconds to do a similar search on a *single* volume. Even after caching the directory structure in RAM, subsequent searches take over 5 seconds. I can't wait to see Apple's V-Twin Find file in operation. * The Taskbar is a terrible implementation... really. Once you have more than 5 windows open you can't see the name of the buttons. It forces you to stretch the Taskbar upwards or downwards, eating up screen real estate, or click on each of the buttons at random until you find the window you're looking for. Plus, a program like Netscape or Internet Explorer puts a button on the taskbar for each and every "document" it opens. So if you have 4 Netscape windows open, that's 4 buttons on the taskbar. This is unlike the MacOS application menu which only lists the programs - you then select whatever "document" you want from the Window menu. * Microsoft really messed up when they decided to program the Windows Registry. It isn't easy to remove every trace of a program in the registry the same way Mac users chunk a program's preferences into the Trash. Also I have already damaged my entire registry once when the RAM I installed turned out to be defective. And, I have heard many other stories about other Windows users who had to reinstall Windows 95 and every single program when their registry went bye bye. * And, last but not least, Apple has, in my opinion, the best Text-to-Speech software out there. Also has very good Speech Recognition. Windows 95 does not come with either one. By the way I have found that the fastest way to shut up a stubborn ignorant Windows user is to turn on the Macintosh, say "Computer: Hello!" and the computer says "Hello, Welcome to Macintosh" right back at me. Then I turn on the video camera and say "Computer: open Video Monitor" and focus the video camera on the stubborn Windows user's face. Then I say "Computer: Copy, open Word, Computer: Paste, Computer: Print" <big grin> Of course, I only then drop the big bombshell and tell them that it's a 5 year old Macintosh AV machine - then I say "Computer, Dial 911" - - nah, just kidding on that last part ;-) Lethargy Francis

mac.3385 ljubisha,
Imam malko nezgodno pitanje. Rebildovao sam desktop i opet ništa. Jel to uopšte može da se izvede?
mac.3387 askripka,

Here are two ways out: 1. Create an AppleScript with this script: tell application "Finder" activate shut down end tell Name it "Shut Down Already!" and save it as an Application. Now tuck it away somewhere on your hard drive for the day when your mouse dies or comes unplugged -- remember, it is possible to damage some Macs by plugging something into the ADP port while the computer is running. Type Command-F to bring up the Find Command and type "Shut Down Already!" into the Find field. If more than one file appears in the Items Found dialog box, use the arrow keys to navigate to your AppleScript. Now type Command-O and watch in wonder as your Mac shuts down. 2. If you have a copy of the Shutdown doodad that appears in the Apple menu, forget about the AppleScript. Just follow the same Find File procedure as detailed above and instead search for Shutdown. by Chris Breen ================================================== Visit the Macworld Daily Tips Archive: http://www.macworld.com/dailytips/ Copyright 1998 Macworld Communications Inc. ==================================================

On occasion you'll quit or switch out of an application and find that your Mac displays an odd collection of colors, or pieces of the desktop appear to be missing. Here's an easy way to force the Mac desktop to redraw. If your Control Strip is active, select a different color depth-switch from Thousands of Colors to 256 Colors, for example. Go ahead and switch it back to the original setting once you've made the initial switch. The purpose is to redraw the desktop, not to force you to use more or less colors. If you're Control Strip-less, just open the Monitors- or Monitors & Sound control panel and make the switch there. You could also change your monitor's resolution to accomplish this, but your icons may be displaced in the process. by Chris Breen

Find out" By Scott Gerlach <http://biz.yahoo.com/finance/980507/is_your_co_1.html>. It talks about the year 2000, and here is what it says about the Mac. "Apple (AAPL - news) Macintoshes and compatibles have been ready for 2000 since their genesis, in 1984. This announcement is from: Apple PR Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that, since its March 30 introduction, over one million Macintosh and Windows users are now using QuickTime 3 or QuickTime 3 Pro. Windows users accounted for more than two thirds of the total QuickTime downloads from Apple's website (www.apple.com/quicktime), demonstrating QuickTime's unique multi-platform appeal for capturing, editing and playing back a wide variety of digital video and audio content. QuickTime: The Standard for Digital Video and New Media Publishing First released in 1991, QuickTime is the standard for digital media creation and publishing. Its latest release, QuickTime 3, combines advanced digital video streaming technologies with major breakthroughs in ease-of-use. QuickTime is the only digital media technology platform capable of integrating 3D animation, real-time special effects, virtual reality and streaming video and audio across all major personal computer platforms. QuickTime currently supports over 35 popular media file formats, including most major video, still image, audio, animation and MIDI formats. QuickTime is the winner of numerous industry awards and QuickTime's file format has been chosen as the starting point for the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) MPEG-4 Intermedia specification. A free version of QuickTime 3 is available for download at www.apple.com/quicktime/. For just $29.99, users can then purchase a special code that will open the advanced capabilities of QuickTime 3 Pro from www.apple.com/quicktime/, or by calling 888-295-0648 toll-free from the U.S. and Canada. Volume account purchases can be made by calling 800-747-7483 toll-free from the U.S., or 800-263-3394 toll-free from Canada. Apple expects localized language versions of QuickTime 3 to be available soon for download.
mac.3400 madamov,
This announcement is from: Apple PR At the Company's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple Computer, Inc. today outlined its operating system software strategy. The strategy includes continuing to enhance Apple's popular Mac OS 8 in releases scheduled for the Fall of 1998 and 1999. In addition, Apple announced Mac OS X (ten), a new advanced version of the Mac OS which will be available to developers in early 1999 and ship in the Fall of 1999. Mac OS X will feature preemptive multitasking, memory protection and advanced virtual memory, and will be fully optimized for Apple's PowerPC G3 based computers. "Mac developers have created over 12,000 software applications for the 25 million Macintosh customers worldwide," said Steve Jobs, Apple's Interim CEO. "Our software strategy builds on this incredible foundation, and adds advanced features that will give us the foundation to continue to stay ahead in the coming decade." Mac OS Software Strategy Mac OS X will be based on a subset of the Macintosh application programming interfaces (APIs) that developers have been using for years to create Macintosh applications. With just a few weeks of work, developers can "tune-up" their applications to deliver new versions using the advanced features of Mac OS X, including protected memory, advanced virtual memory and preemptive multitasking. Apple also expects almost all current Macintosh applications to run unaltered on Mac OS X without a "tune-up" (and without the advanced features), ensuring a smooth transition to the operating system for both developers and customers. Apple is paving the path to Mac OS X with two important operating system software releases scheduled for 1998--Mac OS 8.5 and Rhapsody. Mac OS 8.5--code named Allegro--advances Internet integration on the Mac with new find and browsing capabilities and even easier Internet set up. Mac OS 8.5 will also include new features for power users, such as fast file transfer optimized for 100 MBps Ethernet and a full PowerPC implementation of AppleScript. As well as enhancing existing Apple technologies, Mac OS 8.5 introduces new services for developers that will allow them to begin development for Mac OS X. Later this year Apple will ship the first customer release of Rhapsody, a new operating system that Apple is providing as a server platform for publishing and Internet solutions. Rhapsody contains technologies key to Mac OS X, including a microkernel-based core OS and an advanced software development environment. Developers already familiar with Apple's plans are excited by an operating system strategy that preserves their investment in Mac OS development while delivering advanced capabilities: "We've been hoping and waiting for this strategy for over three years," said Norm Meyrowitz, President, Macromedia Products. "This is absolutely the right way to move Mac OS forward. It will be a pleasure to quickly move Macromedia's products to Mac OS X." "Apple has responded to customer concerns with an OS strategy that preserves the industry's investment in Mac OS while at the same time providing increased stability and performance," said Ben Waldman, general manager of the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft. "Microsoft is looking forward to continued collaboration with Apple on products that meet the needs of our mutual customers."

NoSTalgia, an AtariST emulator for the Apple Macintosh By Philippe Gerin (ph.gerin@skynet.be). WWW: http://users.skynet.be/sky39147/ Special thanks to: Bernd Schmidt for certain UAE routines. Aaron Giles for the sound support libraries. Richard Banister for his advice and part of the interface code. Lewin A.R.W. Edwards for the direct drawing routines. FrÄdÄric Gidouin for valuable technical information. FranŹois Menu and Jens Behmk for AtariST documentation. Arnaud Blanchard for certain programming tricks. Shiva Thomas for the icon. What is it ? NoSTalgia is an AtariST emulator for Macintosh. You can use it to run your AtariST software on your Macintosh. How to use it ? The emulator needs a copy of the AtariST ROM to function. An Atari utility (tosdump.prg) will enable you to transfer the ROM contents to a MS-DOS 720Kb floppy-disk. The file needs to be renamed TOS.IMG and placed in the same folder as NoSTalgia in order to be recognized by the emulator. TOS 1.x and 2.x can be used with this release of the emulator. TOS 1.0 is recommended for running games. Original AtariST floppy-disks cannot be read directly by the Macintosh. 'Dust' (by Marcus Philips) is able to build disk images which can be used by NoSTalgia. The emulator automatically inserts the disk images named 'disk1.st' and 'disk2.st' when you run it. The emulator will boot on the hard drive (C:) if no disk-image is inserted in drive A: The joysticks are activated with the Caps-Lock key: - Joystick 1: fire=ctrl, directions = kolm - Joystick 2: fire=option, directions = gyjh The right button of the ST mouse is emulated by apple-clicking and the help key by F12. Minimum configuration: - Power Macintosh, - 4.5 Mb free RAM, - 256-color display. The following functions are supported: -MC68000, -ST Ram from 512Kb to 4Mb. -Video shifter (320*200, 640*200 et 640*400), -MFP (Timer a-d), -ACIAs, -IKBD: keyboard, mouse and 2 joysticks, -All interrupts with priorities, -FDC supporting .ST and .MSA format disk images, -Rasters, -Blitter, -Hard Disk Drive in DiskCopy format (TOS 1.4 needed), -RTC. The following is not emulated: -Serial port, -Parallel port, -Midi. What's new in version 0.4: - Disk image in MS-DOS format as startup disk. The hard disk file must be 'HDD' and be located in the same folder as NoSTalgia. The hard disk driver 'cart.img' is the image of an ST cartridge and must be in the same folder as well. - The hard disk can be mounted on the Macintosh desktop if PC Exchange is installed. WARNING ! Using version 2.2 of PC Exchange (coming with MacOS 8.1) to transfer files to the Atari hard disk can seriously damage its root directory. It is best to use an earlier version (like 2.05). - Emulation of the MegaST Blitter. - Support for TOS 1.62 and 2.x but not of STE hardware. - Memory between 512kb and 4Mb depending on memory allocated to NoSTalgia. - Better support for US and French keyboards. - Sound can be switched on/off without restarting the emulator. - A few memory addressing bugs fixed. - New drawing routines. - Hard reset. - Better support of Apple Events. Known bugs: - Some sampled sounds are not played. - It may be necessary to restart the ST after having activated the sound. - Rasters still unstable. Software status: This application is freeware, but feel free to send something in order to encourage me to keep development going. For example: - Technical docs, - A postcard, - A bottle of wine or beer. - $10. The software can be freely duplicated and distributed provided that the present 'readme' file is included. If you wish to distribute this software on CD-ROM, please contact me first so I can send you the latest version of NoSTalgia. The hard disk driver ('hdd.prg' and 'cart.img') is shareware: if you use it, please send me $10.

Choose Export from the Edit menu and then select the "Music to AIFF" option from the "Export File As" pull-down menu. The MIDI file will now be transformed into a digital audio file, using the sounds contained in QuickTime Musical Instruments. You could stop here but let's go a couple of steps farther. Take the resulting AIFF file, open it in Movie Player, and again select Export. This time choose "Sound to System 7 Sound" from the "Export File As" pull-down menu. The file will now be saved as a self-playing System 7 sound. Why bother? Because this file is self-playing you can place it in the Startup Items and/or Shutdown Items folder and listen to it as your Mac starts up and shuts down. A couple of notes: These files will sound much better with QuickTime 3.0 thanks to the improved sound set found within QT 3's QuickTime Musical Instruments. Here it is: With a program that allows you to edit file type and creator codes, change the file's file type from ttro to TEXT. The file will now be editable. One of the dirtier little secrets at Comdex this year was just how many *Macs* were there. They weren't really visible... they were hidden behind the curtains. Vendors were using Macs running Office 98 to do their Powerpoint presentations, because they didn't trust PCs to be up and running and stable on such short notice. They had to hide it all behind the curtains, because they were pushing their PC software..."

But suppose you're tired of your old browser and would like to see how Eudora fares with a different browser. Here's how to make that quick switch: Hold down the Option key while double-clicking the URL. Instead of opening the default browser, Eudora pops up a dialog box that asks you to select an http application. If you'd like the browser you've chosen to always launch when you double-click a link, check the Always Use This Application checkbox. By the way, this trick works for any active link including ftp links. by Chris Breen

Instead of bothering to click the Options button that eventually leads you to another button that allows you to search by exact phrase, simply enclose your search phrase in quotes in the search engine's Search field. For example, navigate to any old search engine (Yahoo, HotBot, AltaVista, whatever) and enter a phrase such as "Iron Chef TV" to see a list of pages specifically devoted to Japan's American Gladiator-meets-Galloping Gourmet television classic. Without the quotes you're likely to get hundreds of thousands of hits that list each individual instance of "iron," "chef," and/or "TV." For added fun, place a plus sign in front of words (+iron +chef +TV) to return all documents that use all of those words in any order. by Chris Breen

I was digging around an engineering file archive I wrote off in 1989--two years after I got the Mac Plus I used to write the report. I extracted the sketches I needed, but I'd done them with the paint module of SuperPaint 2.0. Remember SuperPaint? If not just drag a copy onto your hard disk, double-click on a SuperPaint document and take a look. My 9 year old sketch done on a long gone 11 year old Mac Plus boots without a hiccup from 1989 vintage software running under MacOS 8.0 on my Power Computing PTP250. Report came up clean as though I'd archived it yesterday. If I'd bought that cheap 286 machine I was thinking about at the time, my report would have been as inaccessible as the far side of the moon.

In 1996 we opened a new addition and were required to purchase pc's for our shared computer system which would be using Windows....at the same time we bought 2 powermac 7200/90's for office/graphics work. Every one of the pc's have been back to the manufacturer for replacement parts or troubleshooting...it became so disruptive on our main information desk that we 'stole' a powermac from the office and installed in on the information desk. That was two months ago. We had to 'retrain' our librarians for the mac o/s which took about 20 minutes, but they missed the task bar. We purchased GOMAC for the powermac and now they have no confusion going from the mac to windows. We now have a secure workstation. Incidentally, not one of our macs have seen a technician for repair or anything else. Now that is a track record! Tony Tieuli Assistant Librarian

>Ako neko ima neku ideju nek vice. Ovaj, a jel on uopšte radi?

* M A C W O R L D D A I L Y T I P * from the Macintosh resource ================================================== Sponsored by Apple Computer Buy a Pentium crushing Power Macintosh G3 and get a Pentium crushing offer. http://www.apple.com/promo/ ================================================== Too Much Assistance Intermediate I understand that the newest Microsoft Word is just trying to be helpful, but some of its help I can do without. For example, I don't care to have URLs turned into active links after I type them, nor do I want numbered lists automatically formatted for me, and finally, I'm tired of that cute little animated Mac telling me that if I save something in the Word 5.1 format it will lose some of its groovy new formatting. Hey buddy, I SELECTED THE SAVE AS WORD 5.1 OPTION IN THE SAVE TAB OF THE PREFERENCES DIALOG BOX FOR A REASON! GET OFF MY BACK! Oh, sorry. Anyway, here are the various fixes: The key to turning off automatic link and numbered lists formatting is the AutoFormat command found in the Format menu. To kill the automatic hyperlinks, uncheck the "Internet paths with hyperlinks" option in the AutoFormat As You Type tab. In this same tab, turn off the Automatic Bulleted Lists option to keep numbered lists from auto formatting. To end that nagging save reminder I'm afraid you have to kill the messenger. That's right, open the Microsoft Office 98 folder, open the Office folder, and then open the Assistants folder. Drag every file out of this folder and place those unwanted assistants in a safe place in case you want them back some day. Now when you save a document with the Save as Word 5.1 option checked, Word will do exactly as you ask without any outside interference-at least the first time you save. On the second save Word continues to nag you about losing formatting and unfortunately removing the assistants does nothing to resolve this problem. by Chris Breen
