Silent iMac, Wholly iMac
Beginner
Unlike every Mac that precedes it, the iMac's startup sound (the sound
you hear when the iMac first fires up) is controlled via software. If
you notice that your iMac is strangely silent at startup, select
Monitors & Sound from the Control Panels folder (or from the Control
Panels hierarchical menu in the Apple menu) and make sure that the
volume isn't muted and is turned up in this control panel. (Well,
actually Monitors & Sound is an application but let's not argue about
it, okay?)

LaunchURL
Intermediate
Here's a two-tiered tip:
1. If you have any interest in automating repetitive tasks on your
Mac, buy a copy of Westcode Software's OneClick. It's the most
happening macro utility on the market.
2. Once you purchase your copy of OneClick, download the LaunchURL
extension. This free extension from Dan Crevier allows you to create a
button--available to you from any application, including the
Finder--that with one click launches your email application and
creates a blank message addressed to the recipient designated in the
button's script or launches your browser and takes you to the site
designated in the button's script.
For example, I've created a button that launches Netscape and takes me
to Macworld's software center, MacDownload. I've created another
button that launches Eudora Pro, enters the name of my editor in the
To field, and automatically enters the text: "I've been doing this for
almost a year, don't you think it's about time for a raise?" in the
body of the message.
In addition to OneClick you need to be using Internet Config and have
it configured with your favorite email client and browser.

Safe and Sane IP Addresses
Power User
There are times when it's handy to assign IP addresses to your
internal network--when you're employing TCP/IP to connect to a Mac and
a PC for the productive purpose of playing games, for example, or
using a program such as Retrospect to back up devices in a
cross-platform environment. But how to know which IP address to use?
Simple enough.
The people who make these sorts of agreements have agreed that IP
addresses that appear in this format: 192.168.x.x may be used
internally. This means that there should be no danger that you'll find
such an address on the Internet.
To create such an address, open the TCP/IP control panel, type
Command-K (or select Configurations from the File menu), select one of
the listed configurations, press the Duplicate button, name the new
setting (something like Internal IP, donchathink?), press the Make
Active button, select Ethernet from the Connect via pull-down menu and
Manually from the Configure pull-down menu, enter a 192.168.x.x IP
address in the corresponding field (something like 192.168.5.1, for
example), and, if you really want to, enter 255.255.255.0 in the
Subnet mask field. Close and save and your Mac is configured. Repeat
as necessary for other Macs. Now when you want to use your home
network, just open TCP/IP, type Command-K to bring up Configurations,
and select Internal IP.

Choose Your Soundtrack
Intermediate
Thanks to the robust storage capabilities of CD-ROMs, many games sport
digital audio background music tracks. Of course you realize that even
though you've copied an entire game to your hard drive, you can't play
the background music tracks unless you have the CD-ROM in the drive.
But what you may not know is that with some games you can place any
audio CD in the CD-ROM player and the game will play the audio tracks
on that CD. I've found that Quake, accompanied by the sturm und drang
of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, can be particularly stirring.

Script For Mom
Intermediate
My mother recently purchased an iMac and although she's tickled with
her new blue companion she wishes there was an easier way to create a
blank ClarisWorks word processing document. Well, mom, there
is--provided you're willing to learn a thing or two about ClarisWorks
macros and AppleScript. Here's Apple's solution:
Open ClarisWorks, select Record Macro from the File menu's Macro
submenu. In the resulting dialog box, name the macro something
memorable such as "Create WP Document" and click the Play In All
Environments checkbox. Now click the Record button and type Command-N
to create a new document and then press Return to select a Word
Processing document. Select Stop Recording from the Macro submenu.
Now launch AppleScript's Script Editor and enter this script into the
new script window:
tell application "ClarisWorks"
do script "Create WP Document"
end tell
Now just name the script, save it as an application, and check the
Newer Show Startup Screen checkbox. Place the script on your desktop,
mom, and whenever you need a new, blank ClarisWorks document, just
double-click the script's icon.

Just Like Magic
Intermediate
Confession time: The desktops of my Macs look like the floor of my
office -- completely covered with junk. Every couple of weeks I toss
this desktop detritus into a folder and use the Find command when I
need to locate it at a later date.
Apparently Aladdin Software has been observing my habits for they've
created a tool for silicon slobs such as me. Aladdin Desktop Magic is
an application/extension combination that allows you to hide and
reveal items you've placed on your Mac's desktop. Not only is this
helpful to the untidy, but it can be put to practical use for those
who want to create sets of desktop items for different projects. For
example, you can create a Graphics set that includes all the files and
folders for a newsletter you're working on. Another set might contain
saved game files. Yet another could include all the junk you
downloaded during your last Internet excursion.
Aladdin Desktop Magic is shareware and costs $19.95. The demo's good
for 30 days and you can download it at http://www.macdownload.com.

**Internet Explorer Cross-Frame Security Bug Patch** -- Microsoft
has announced a potential security problem affecting Internet
Explorer that could enable a Web site operator to access the
contents of your local disks. Dubbed the "cross-frame navigate"
issue, the problem affects both Windows and Macintosh versions of
Internet Explorer 3.x and 4.x. On the Mac, Internet Explorer 3.01,
4.0, and 4.01 are vulnerable although 3.0 is not; under Windows,
any application (such as Eudora Pro) that can use Explorer's HTML
engine could also be vulnerable. Microsoft has released a 2.3 MB
updater for the Mac version of Internet Explorer 4.01 that fixes
the problem; users of Explorer 3.01 and 4.0 must upgrade to
version 4.01 and then apply the patch. Although little information
is available, Microsoft claims to have no reports of anyone
exploiting this loophole. [GD]

Subject: Tidbit - Don't Forget About iMac Infrared
This tidbit is from: This tidbit is from:
Jim Upchurch <Montgomery AL IT> <jupchurch@atg.aum.edu>
A friend who does some occasional word processing for me bought a new
iMac to replace her old SE. She had two issues: fear of establishing a
first-time Internet hookup, aggravated by reading about some iMac users'
difficulties connecting to providers other than Earthlink (she wanted
Mindspring, but had never used any ISP); and the need to get Word 5.1a
from her old machine onto her iMac. Used to 5.1a, she had no interest in
any newer version of Word which might have been available on a CD.
I still don't know what the "non-Earthlink ISP connection problem" is,
frankly, since it took all of two totally uneventful minutes to get her
connected to Mindspring once her iMac and her Mindspring new-user's
connection kit got onto my dining room table.
The problem with copying Word was more of a stumper, at first. There
seemed to be no easy way to get her old copy of Word 5.1a off her
freestanding SE and into her new iMac, which of course has no floppy and
no way at present to use a Zip disk. We didn't have an Ethernet network
handy, and her SE has no Ethernet card anyhow. I was contemplating some
very unattractive alternatives (like ftp'ing the diskette images
necessary to install 5.1a up, then down again), when it dawned on me: my
wife has a Powerbook 3400c with an installed Word 5.1a. And both the
3400c and the iMac have infrared sensors. I'd never used Infrared before,
and had no documentation on how to configure or use it, but what the
heck? It's a Mac, right? And no self-respecting Mac user needs
documentation, right?
After fiddling with the Infrared, TCP/IP, and Appletalk control panels
for less than five minutes -- joy! Her iMac's screen displayed a message
that the iMac had sensed the presence of an IrDA sender in the vicinity.
>From that point on, it was nothing but the Chooser, Sharing Setup, and
time-honored methods of mounting a server onto the 3400c's desktop. Drag
the 5.1a folder onto the iMac's drive icon, and -- voila!
The surprise was the speed, which seemed far faster than AppleTalk over
PhoneNets. The entire Word 5.1a folder (a full install) moved from my
wife's 3400c to my friend's iMac in less than a minute.
It was so much fun I went ahead and dragged over a copy of Tex-Edit Plus,
too.

This tidbit is from:
Cliff Worthington, <cliffw@osa.att.ne.jp>
Just wanted to give you a report on the Japanese consumers' response to
the iMac. I know this is kind of long but I feel this feedback will
interest your readers. It's good to know that the iMac is not only well
received in the U.S. but in other countries as well, with Japan being the
"second wave". Feel free to enter this into a "more iMac reactions" page
or the mailbag. You can summarize this of course, however it would be
great if the readers can read my experience in its entirety. Thank you.
Cliff Worthington
<cliffw@osa.att.ne.jp> (you can print this e-mail address if you want)
Just Fantastic! The iMac launch here in Japan was just what the doctor
ordered in Mac loving Japan. I'm an American living and working in Osaka
which is the 2nd largest city in Japan. I feel fortunate to live close to
"Den-Den town"; an electronics shopping paradise. After Akihabara in
Tokyo, Den-Den town is the largest electronics district. Imagine block
after block of CompUsas, Fry's electronics, and all your fave computer
outlets occupying the same area of a city (zoning restrictions in the
U.S. probably wouldn't allow for this).
The weekend launch (Lauch day was August 30,1500) was positively
crackling with Mac fans. There were the usual promos: balloons, posters,
and flyers however the iMac giant inflatable was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, building banners were installed that were visible from a good
couple of blocks away. Some stores were giving out Apple promotional
goods and iMac T-shirts were worn by many. You could tell those who just
experienced iMacs because of the apple juice cups they were holding
apparantly being served by some stores.
Now on to the iMac!.....Wow! People were actually lining up to take a
test spin and to touch the silky smooth plastic. Some iMacs were set up
with a slot machine game and if you were able to line up 3 Apple logos
you would walk away with some cool Apple promo stuff (pens, mouse pads,
mugs and the like). In one store in particular, I was able to count
nearly 80 iMacs stacked in their unmistakable orange & white cubes and
all were sold! They all had tags with the lucky buyer's names written in
thick black marker pen. Talk about rubbing it in! Unlike the U.S., most
of the Japanese customers were having their iMacs delivered to their
homes due to lack of parking in parking deficient Japan. A salesman at
one store used a bullhorn to blare out that he had only 10 iMacs left.
People from the opposite side of the street ran across, dodging oncoming
traffic to get to the store! I guess you could say they were "dying" to
get their iMacs!...and yes all 10 were sold within a few minutes.
The funniest memory I have of this historic event was that of a 40ish
couple. The husband literally had his mouth agape for 10 minutes straight
watching a demo of Connectix Virtual PC on the iMac. He had absolutely no
idea that Macs could do windows! I overheard him saying to his wife that
if he'd of known, he'd have bought a mac instead of his PC (Ithink he
mentioned a Panasonic model). Needless to say he reserved an iMac from
the next shipment. This really ticks me off that Apple won't capitalize
on the Mac's ability to do windows. By the way Virtual PC and SoftWindows
were hot sellers.
Yes;...the iMac is a smashing success here and I was reminded of Apple's
commitment to make consumers aware that Apple is alive and well. This
morning on my way to work, I ran into a large iMac poster in the subway
station greeting me with the catch-phrase, "hello again". Hello again
indeed.

On to the second iMac story: Today is trash day. In front of my
neighbor's house, I saw two empty iMac cartons, and some kind of Wintel
tower. No kidding. Man, you can't say it any clearer than that. I took a
picture. The jpeg's at <http://www.jollyroj.com> and I guarantee you that
I did not doctor it, did not touch a thing, physically or digitally.
No good deed goes unpunished, however. My division (OK, I'll say it, but

>well?
Dear David,
the German software company Application Systems Heidelberg (ASH, in
Atari business since 1987) offers a professional ATARI emulator _both_
for Mac and PC: Magic Mac 6.0.1 and Magic PC 6.0 (demo for download at
http://ash.sww.net).
These programs provide the same user surface as an ATARI running Magic
6.0, which is a stable and fast preemptive multitasking OS for all 68k
Ataris. Hence any Atari program that has been correctly written
according to TOS instructions and does not use direct "illegal" access
to specific hardware features of the computer, will run under Magic on
all 3 platforms identically.
I have used MagicMac now for 3 years in parallel to Atari TT and ST
computers. It works stable and really _very_ fast on a Mac PPC 7500 with
604e/166CPU and is reported even faster on G3 Macs.
Magic Mac 6.0.1 is compatible with MacOS 8.1 (own experience) and with
HFS-Plus (not yet tested myself). E.g. the text processing software
Signum 4.4 (also made by ASH), which typesets latin, greek, kyrillic,
hebreic, arabic (from right to left), hungul (from Thailand) and
possibly some more languages, runs subjectively judged about 3-4 times
faster on my Macźs screen display than Word98.
Using Magic for Atari, Magic Mac or Magic PC, installation of NVDI 5
(distributed by ASH) is strongly recommended. NVDI is a kind of
TOS-plugin that dramatically accelerates graphic output on screen and in
print.
Good success!

As a bizarre aside, my niece's husband was doing some search and rescue

Watch Out For 8.5
Intermediate
OS 8.5 has been out for a few weeks now and the inevitable bug reports
are starting to filter in. The most disturbing reports are those of
disk corruption after OS 8.5 has been installed. Because these reports
are fairly widespread, you should take precautions before installing
or when using OS 8.5.
- Back up your data before installing OS 8.5. If it's already
installed, back up your data anyway. Should something untoward occur,
you'll want your data back.
- Make sure all your drivers are up to date - particularly drivers
associated with disk formatting software. Old drivers may be a cause
of this corruption.
- Update your third-party utilities.
- Pray that Apple discovers the source of these problems quickly.

offers standard video out that supports all Mac and PC displays. Video
resolution can go as high as 1600x1200 and mirroring is supported in
standard iMac video modes.

Celebrate the Difference
Beginner
Perhaps you've now heard that Apple has upgraded the iMac. But how are
they different and how can you tell whether you have a Rev. A or Rev.
B iMac?
The original iMac comes with 2 MB of video RAM, Mac OS 8.1, and the
ATI Rage IIc graphics accelerator chip. Rev. B models add an
additional 4 MB of video RAM, ship with Mac OS 8.5, upgrade the
graphics chip to the ATI Rage Pro, and include a copy of Adobe
PageMill 3.0.
You won't be able to tell from the outside of the iMac, but the box it
comes in reveals all. Look for model number M6709LL/B on the outside
of Rev. B cartons.

Random Acts
Beginner
Microsoft Excel mavens know that they can generate a random number
greater than 0 but less than 1 by typing =rand() into a cell. But do
these same mavens know that this command can be used with Microsoft
Word 98 as well?
Go ahead, give it a try. Open a new Word 98 document and type =rand()
and press Return. Not only will you learn a thing or two about the
relationship between fleet foxes and indolent canines, you'll find
this a nifty way to create paragraphs of filler text.

Help Center Shortcuts
Intermediate
When using Mac OS 8.5's Help Center, don't forget these special
characters when conducting a search:
+ Use the plus symbol when you want to find pages that list both
items. For example, if you want to learn about the Control Strip,
enter control + strip.
| This symbol represents "or." If you wanted to view links that
included information about video or audio, you'd type "video | audio"
(without the quotes).
! This means "not." So if you want to narrow your search so that it
includes links to video but not audio you'd type "video ! audio."
( ) Parentheses are used to group objects for a compound search. For
example, typing "(hotdogs + mustard) ! relish" loosely translates to,
"Give me a hotdog with mustard but hold the relish."

able to make repairs by following this procedure:
Open the Internet control panel and under the edit menu select User

Lode Runner 2 Cheats
Beginner
MacSoft has another new game out, Lode Runner 2 -- a sequel to the
wildly popular arcade diversion of the 80's. Not only does this give
Mac users a challenging game to play, but also another opportunity to
compromise their integrity by cheating their way through the game. To
do so:
During a single-player game, press the Escape key and type "glazed
donut" (with the space, without the quotes, and yes, spell doughnut as
'donut'). You'll hear a satisfying "Ha Ha!" when you've done this
properly.
Return to the game and enter these codes when you feel the need to be
a big, fat cheater:
F3 = Go back one level
F4 = Go forward one level
Command-F12 = Gain five lives
Command-8 = Ten bombs added to each category
Command-K = Beach ball power-up
Command-I = Invisible power-up
Command-T = Morph power-up
Command-B = Cloak power-up

Changing File Exchange
Power User
There may come a time when you'd prefer that File Exchange (the
control panel that translates PC files into a format understandable to
Mac) would not go about its business. Sure, you can disable it with
Apple's Extension Manager but that requires that you restart your Mac.
There's an easier way:
Just create these two AppleScripts in the Script Editor:
tell application "File Exchange"
set PC file system enabled to true
end tell
tell application "File Exchange"
set PC file system enabled to false
end tell
The first script switches File Exchange on and, as you might have
guessed, the second turns it off.
If you plan to switch File Exchange on and off routinely, then create
the scripts in Script Editor, save then as applications, and check the
Never Show Startup Screen checkbox.

Cutting Sherlock Up to Size
Power User
Sherlock, Mac OS 8.5's find utility, has one tiny flaw: You can't
resize its window which means that when you want to traipse through
your Internet search sites and tick on and off sites as you go, you
have to scroll through what could be a very long list. If only you
could resize Sherlock's window...
Well, of course you can and here's how to do so with ResEdit:
Launch ResEdit and use it to open a copy of Sherlock -- remember, we
ALWAYS work on copies when we work with ResEdit. Now double-click on
the wctb resource and then open the only resource you find within --
the Find Window resource. At the top of the resulting window you'll
see a string of different window types. Select the one to the far
left, click the close box, and save your changes.
Now when you launch this copy of Sherlock you'll be able to drag the
bottom right corner of the window to resize it.

Power User
Users with non-Apple Mac OS systems (ie. clones) and those with
non-Apple CD-ROM players understand that Apple's CD/DVD drivers won't
work with any CD-ROM players except those included with an Apple Mac
system. That is, until this ResEdit hack appeared in c't Magazine and
was later modified by Anthony Saxton. By altering Apple's CD-ROM
drivers you can now use any SCSI CD-ROM player with Apple's drivers.
Here's how:
Open a copy of the Apple CD-ROM or CD/DVD extension with ResEdit and
locate the DRVR resource. Open this resource and then open ID 32. If
you get an error (I did) try opening the resource with the Open using
Hex Editor menu command.
If you have version 1.0.1 of the Apple CD/DVD Driver, locate row 06C8
and change 6704 to 4E71. If you have version 5.4.2 of the Apple CD-ROM
extension, locate row 06B6 and change 6704 to 4E71. If you have
version 1.2 of the Apple CD-ROM extension, locate row 06C6 and change
6706 to 4E71.
Now move to row 0A10 if you have version 1.0.1 and change 6606 4A84
6700 0086 to 4E71 4E71 4E71 4E71. With version 5.4.2 locate row 09C6
and change 6606 4A84 6700 0086 to 4E71 4E71 4E71 4E71. Those with
version 1.2 should go to row 0AD6 and change 6604 4A84 6706 to 4E71
4E71 4E71.
Now save your changes and replace your old driver with this one (keep
a copy of the old driver in case something goes wrong).

Macworld Expo news continues this week, with all the information
we couldn't fit in last week. (Baby.) We all pitch in for our
regular Macworld Superlatives article, and Jeff Carlson looks at
the various Palm-related products on display at the show. (Baby.)
In the news, Apple announced at $152 million dollar profit, Fog
City released LetterRip Pro 3.0.4, and oh, did we mention that
Adam and Tonya had a baby, Tristan Mackay Engst?

It occurred to me that if Apple had a sense of humor, it would have
made one of the new multicolored iMac models just the tiniest bit
faster than the others. Just imagine if, as in a package of M&Ms, the
red iMacs were perceived to be slightly better than any of the other
colors.
Although Steve Jobs displayed a nice touch of humor during his "HAL"
exchanges at the Macworld Expo keynote address, I doubt he'd go so far
as to allow Apple's engineers to tweak the performance of one iMac
flavor over another simply for the sake of a joke. However, there
actually IS a difference between the various multicolored iMac models.
That difference? The keyboard.
It turns out that the keyboard that ships with the blueberry (read:
Blue) iMac, can be used with any iMac model -- including Rev. A and B
models -- as well as the new blue PowerMac G3s. Oddly enough, Apple
recommends that you use the keyboards that ship with the other
multicolored iMacs only with an iMac. I don't know if it's the
aesthetics that Apple objects to ("Mix a tangerine keyboard with a
blueberry G3!? How gauche...") but regardless, the company suggest
that these keyboards not be used with the blue G3s.

So you're among the lucky ones who now possesses a new PowerMac G3
(Blue and White). As an earlier adopter, surely you want to know about
every niggling detail of your new Mac's operation. Allow me to reveal
just such a detail.
Your new Mac runs a Power On Self Test (a.k.a., POST) when it first
starts up. If the Mac fails that test it will emit one or more beeps,
depending on what part of the test it fails. Here's how Apple's
Technical Information library defines those beeps:
1 beep = No RAM has been detected.
2 beeps = The RAM is incompatible with your Mac.
3 beeps = None of the RAM banks passed the memory tests.
4 beeps = Bad checksum for the remainder of the boot ROM.
5 beeps = Bad checksum for the ROM boot block.
Apple recommends that if your Mac produces these sounds you take it
into an Apple Authorized Service Provider. We recommend that if you
hear these beeps after installing RAM you make sure that the RAM is
properly seated and that you've used the correct type of RAM.

One of the highlights of the recent Macworld Expo was Connectix's
Virtual Game Station -- a product that allows your PowerMac G3 to play
Sony PlayStation games under emulation. Problem is that VGS supposedly
won't work with G3 upgrade cards. This is and isn't correct.
It is correct because for games to run smoothly, you need the kind of
fast system bus found in stock G3 Macs -- including desktop,
PowerBook, and iMac models -- and a RAGE Pro graphics chipset. And it
isn't correct because even without a RAGE Pro you can run VGS.
An Australian reader, Tony Sullivan from St. Kilda, Vic., explains
that all you need to do is install the Universal ATI drivers into your
Extensions folder. As long as VGS sees these drivers, VGS will launch.
Note that Connectix wasn't kidding when it said you need a fast system
bus. I tried VGS with a 266MHz NewerTech G3 upgrade card in a PowerMac
6100/66 and PlayStation games played terribly -- lots of jittery sound
and strobing graphics. However, owners of PowerMacs with faster system
buses and G3 upgrade cards may have better luck.

I've been reading with amusement all the posting about Mac's that fix
PC floppies and so on and realized that it has become so common
around here that I took it for granted that Mac's can fix PC problems.
Cabela's produces great catalogs for the camping, hunting, and
outdoor enthusiast, and I might ad that our catalogs are great. We
produce them all with Mac's of course. But we receive countless
floppies, M/Os, CD, Syquests, Zip's and so on from product vendors
that have items in our catalogs. It is a weekly if not daily thing
that someone from our MIS dept. or a Product Specialist walks a
frustrated person into my office with a PC disk they cannot read on
their PC computers or some strange file format that a small shop
created with a software product our PC (we have a small army of MIS
wintel guys) experts have never heard of or cannot open.
I pop the disk into my Mac, and without exception I can open it,
recover it, translate it, or convert it to a usable format that the
PC user needs or that I can pass along to production people on Mac's
to use in advertisements ot catalog production. It has become so
routine that now it is part of the MIS dept. policy to send people
with bad disks, or strange formats to us to fix. (with the help of
many a utility or program I learned about from the Evangelist
postings). Everyone knows around here that if you have a problem disk
or strange unreadable file just find someone with a Macintosh they
can always fix it.

Fontographer.

Samo prevučeš fontove preko ikone System foldera i Mac će da ih smesti gde
treba (u Fonts folder unutar System foldera).

Considering that modern Macs are mostly SCSI-less, one of the best
remaining ways to transfer data from an old Mac to a new iMac or Power
Mac G3 (Blue and White, that is) is to set up a network and use an

around $10, some parsimonious do-it-yourselfers may wish to make their
own cable. Here's Apple's scheme for doing just that:

One tiny fly in the Mac OS ointment is that when you wish to eject a
removable disk you must either zip back to the Finder or eject the
disk from a dialog box. Jerry Du now brings us an easier way with his
$15 shareware utility, EjectMenu 2.1.
EjectMenu allows you to eject removables in a variety of ways -- from
the EjectMenu menu item that appears in the menubar, via contextual
menus, from the control strip, and through hot keys (you can create
key combinations to eject disks from up to five different removable
drives). Compatible devices include floppy, CD-ROM, Zip, Jaz, magneto
optical, and most other removable drives.

If you find that you're constantly shifting Excel columns in order to
accommodate the width of your entries you might try this instead:
Click on a column heading and select Cells from the Format menu. In
the resulting window, click the Alignment tab and then click the box
next to Shrink to fit. As the name implies, entries in this column

picas, pixels, and how the Mac OS and Windows render fonts
differently. Adam weighs in with some thoughts on the permanence
of URLs on the Web (and how to deal with broken URLs), and, in the
news, we see Macintosh Runtime for Java 2.1, Action Files 1.2,
ShareWay IP 2.0, and MasterJuggler 2.0.2.

If you think walking barefoot over hot coals is preferable to
setting up a firewall for your intranet or Internet connection,
keep your shoes on and read Chris Pepper's article on firewall
security (and why you should care even if you're not a network
administrator). Also, Adam looks at the pros and cons of Macworld
Expo's relocation to New York this July, and we note Palm
Computing's release of two new handhelds and Alco Blom's release
of Web Confidential 1.2.

Claris Organizer returns! If you were a fan of Claris's personal
information manager, you'll be pleased to hear it has been
reincarnated as the Macintosh Palm Desktop, and it's free whether
or not you use a Palm device. Also this week, Louise Bremner
passes on the sights, sounds, and tastes of Macworld Expo Tokyo.
In the news, Adobe reveals Adobe GoLive 4.0, a new Web browser
called iCab emerges, and Default Folder 3.0.1 and Aladdin
DropStuff 5.1 appear.

Last week we explored the new possibilities the Macintosh Palm
Desktop 2.1 software brings to Palm handheld owners and Claris
Organizer users. This week Jeff Carlson takes a tour of the
advanced personal organization software, pointing out some of the
more confusing bits for Palm handheld users. Also this week, Adam
and Tonya go grocery shopping on the Internet via the new
HomeGrocer.com, and we report on Adobe's big announcements at
Seybold.

Beginner
Now that the media has finally turned away from the impeachment
feeding frenzy and moved on to the Next Big Thing -- Y2K -- you may be
wondering how you too can participate in this overblown exercise.
Simple enough. Just download a copy of Pedagoguery Software's $38
shareware application, Y2K Software Audit.
Y2K Software Audit will scan your files and tell you which are ready
for the millennial odometer shift, which aren't ready, and which the
program isn't quite sure about. Until you pay for it, the program
scans only 1,000 files. You can find your copy at
http://www.macdownload.com.
