You know that you can print the license agreement within an Apple installer by clicking the Print button but probably didn't know that if you hold down the Option key the Print button adopts an ellipses that provides a gateway to a Page Setup dialog box. This dialog box allows you to select a page size, scale the size of the page your printer outputs, and choose horizontal or vertical orientation. by Chris Breen

Jesi ti sve to lepo terminisao kako treba?

Is this a potential problem? According to Apple, no, any laptop with this kind of processing muscle is going to get warm. However, herre are three things you can do to keep your new PowerBook as comfortable as possible: 1. Use the PowerBook on a flat, hard surface rather than on a soft surface such as a towel, ottoman, or pillow. On a hard surface air flows under the computer and helps cool it off. If you obstruct this narrow airway the PowerBook may get hotter than is good for it. 2. If you can stand the performance hit, turn processor cycling on in the Energy Saver control panel and also select Reduce Processor Speed. 3. Finally, a charging battery produces a bit more heat. If you can't stand the heat while you're working, charge the battery when the PowerBook is sleeping or turned off. by Chris Breen

Then you just have to press the 'Back' and 'Forward' buttons to scroll through all of them. I have tested this with Netscape 4.05 as well as 4.5PR1. I have also tested this by dropping .gif, .jpg and .html files. I am sure it will work with others though. You can reply to this tip, or view other User Tips in our Tips and Tricks Forum. But this doesn't allow for any problems >and complications in exchanging documents and data with other people. > John: My office has 9 Macs/2 PC's. All the Macs are PowerPC, running Mac OS8.1. The PC's are Pentiums configured to boot from either Windows 3.1, Win95, NT 3.5, or NT 4.0. We've been running a mixed environment of Mac/PC's for more than a decade. Presently, we're using a Mac server (a stock PPC 7600/132/48 RAM) running AppleShare IP 5.x (we had been running AS 3.5 up until a month ago with no problems!). We use Miramar Systems PCMacLan on the PC's. The server also runs Retrospect to do backups to DAT, Zip, and Jaz media. IMHO, the Mac server (Mac+Win) is the way to go. Appleshare IP is easy to set up, easy to maintain, and highly reliable. Note: Can't say that for the 2 PC's; although I have NT4.0 server, after examining the set up requirements and studying the documentation, I quickly dismissed any notion of using NT server. Just too complicated when a simpler and just as effective alternative (and better) exists. As for file sharing on the PC's, I like PC MacLan, but others like/use DAVE. I don't know what DAVE can do, but PC MacLan allows me to set the PC drives to be shared, similar to file sharing on Mac. This feature allows Retrospect to mount the volumes during backup and for the Mac stations to see the PC files. PC MacLan also allows the PC's to mount the server and other Mac workstations. (It tries to be more Mac-like than PC-like.) You can also edit server-folder privileges and it supports long file names. You won't have trouble sharing / reading / opening Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files if you are using compatible versions of MSOffice on both platforms (Office 98 on the Mac, Office 97 for Windows). Just save the files in their native file format; no special "save as" required. I'm not sure about MSProject. We store all files (including PC) on the server. Applications (except for some muliuser databases we employ) reside on the respective workstation. Thus all files are saved to and launched from the server. With the size network you indicated, Appleshare will be plenty robust. You might want to use a G3 server. (That's my next purchase.) There's also Timbuktu, which actually allows you to control a PC from a Mac over the network. I haven't used Timbuktu lately (MacLan meets our needs), but I used to use it sometimes to "run" one of the PCs over the network. I certainly would not advise that as a turnkey solution, but it was a low-tech way (and interesting) to check the behavior or a specific program problem on Windows while viewing it on the Mac. Last but not least, you should consider backup strategy. The presence of Retrospect should be a clincher for a Mac+Win solution. It's easy to use, fast and powerful and supports Windows workstation clients. If I had my druthers (Southern USA slang, I am from Nashville), I would get rid of the PC's and use Macs only. Now this is anecdotal, but the support to keep our two PC's running--just running--has consumed approx. 90% of the total support time spent on all computers. However, since so much of the world--andmost of my customer base--is Windows crazy, I need the two PC's to test operating system anomalies like DLL conflicts, printer set ups, and just plain technical support for a vertical market application we offer.

Subject: Re: Y2K issues with Macintosh software From: "Ladd Van Tol" <ladd@beale.com> Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 08:26:52 -0700 >I saw yesterday on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) a report in a >show called "Undercurrents" about the changing date when we will get to the >second Millennium. One of the interviewed people (somebody called Blake) >said that although the Mac will not have problems on 01 January 2000, some >applications might. Is that true? I remember seeing something about this >but can't find it anymore. I know that FileMaker Inc posted a page about >this, but I want to know if in general, the Mac applications are 2000k year >savvy. Generally speaking, most Mac apps should be Y2K compliant. The operating system defines time in terms of seconds since January 1, 1904. Since the time is stored as an unsigned 32-bit integer, that gives somewhat over 4 billion seconds before the clock "rolls around". If you do the math (2^32/60/60/24/365), you get about 136 years, or until 2040. The problems that will arise will probably involve applications that do date calculations with two digit dates. All the Mac code I've seen (and written) bases its date calculations on either the second clock, or the OS routines for converting the second clock into a date. Some apps may also use a two character input field -- like the little up/down thing in the Date & Time Control panel, which might not work properly. Incidentally, newer OS routines provide for date calculations spanning from 30,081 B.C. to 29,940 A.D. I'm sure OS 15789.6.1 will remove this painful limitation. __________________________________________________ Ladd Van Tol | ladd@beale.com | http://ladd.ml.org

Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 08:06:32 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - Xerox Has Gotten the Message Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better This tidbit is from: Carl Maniscalco, <caman@earthlink.net> I recently worked a temporary job at a high-speed copy/quick print firm, filling in for their resident designer while he was on vacation. Among the equipment in the shop was a Xerox Docutech 40. This is a very expensive, high-end piece of equipment which can be used either as a standard color copier or, through a software RIP (Raster Image Processor, a device which interprets PostScript language files and converts them into a form the printer can understand), as a high-resolution color PostScript laser printer. Xerox offers two different RIPs for this machine; the Fiery RIP, running on a Pentium II/Windows NT computer, or the Splash RIP on a Macintosh. The firm I worked at used the Splash RIP, which ran on a Power Mac 8600. The second day I was there, the internal Zip drive on the 8600 gave up the ghost. This was a relatively minor problem, but I called for service anyway since the entire hardware/software package is leased from Xerox and free service is included in the deal. When the field technician arrived the following morning, he was at a bit of a loss. I actually had to help him with some pretty basic stuff, which seemed to embarrass him considerably. "I'm sorry," he said "but I don't know much about the Splash. I have to work on Fiery RIPs two or three times a week but, in the two years since it was released, this is only the second time I've ever had to work on on a Splash. In fact, Xerox field technicians love the Splash and we recommend it over the Fiery whenever we're asked just for that reason." Because of their high cost (over $100,000), these machines are often kept running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, cranking out as much work as possible in order to make them pay for themselves. The fact that a Mac can hold up to this kind of use so much better than a Wintel box can is a striking example of it's technical superiority.

Instead of offering any real help I mentioned that if she'd purchased a PowerBook she wouldn't be having this problem. "Oh, then how would I type in a web address, Mac boy?" "Simple," I answered, "just launch the Key Caps desk accessory and point and click your text into the window. As long as your Shift key works and you can produce a colon character, you've got the address." "And then what?" she sneered in her Windows sort of way. "I know, you select and copy the text and then paste it into the browser's address field. But there's no command in my browser to go to the site entered in that field. And, if you recall, my Return/Enter key is busted." "That's one reason Apple created the Connect To script," I calmly replied. "Just select Connect To from the Apple menu, paste the address into the Text field, and click the Connect button. VIM-VAM-VOOM, your browser launches, navigates to that site, and you're on your way." by Chris Breen

The keyboard's Start button doubles as a Mac Command (Apple) button on the iMac, so it provides full Mac functionality."...

Because the iMac uses a USB keyboard this trick won't work. In order to perform an emergency restart of your iMac you must open the door on the side of the iMac, locate the reset hole (it's marked with a triangle symbol and is placed between the Ethernet and modem ports), and gently shove the end of a straightened paper clip into the hole. Your iMac should restart. If it doesn't, Apple recommends that you unplug the iMac, wait 30 seconds, plug it back it, and start up as you normally would. by Chris Breen

The two leaders will speak at separate gatherings (we wouldn't want this to get ugly), and on different topics. Steve Jobs, Apple's Interim CEO, will speak Tuesday, September 1, 1998 from 9:00am-10:00am at San Francisco Marriott in the Yerba Buena Ballroom. UCLA's study showed that a cluster of four Macs now has the same computational power (and twice the memory) as one of the best supercomputers of eight years ago, a four-processor CRAY Y-MP. The cost for the Mac set-up was also much cheaper, as low as $45/Mflop. Used in the study were Power Mac G3/266s with 288 MB RAM and 6GB hard drives...

Nice try by Ben Wilson bwilson@maccentral.com http://www.maccentral.com/news/9808/25.ipc.shtml PC envy has finally reared it's ugly head, as the Computer Stop is rolling out the "iPC." The website reads "Considering iMAC? Considering Micron? Computer Stop Beats Both!" and directly blasts the iMac by saying "It's not transluscent, but it does have a floppy." It was inevitable. Apple has a winner concept with the iMac, and it was only a matter of time before Wintel manufacturers begin copying Apple's specification sheet and looks. The usual technique for doing so is to place the folder containing the alternate scenario in the same folder as the Quake application and then drag and drop the alternate scenario folder onto the Quake icon. However, this doesn't always do the trick. Here's another way: Go ahead and place the alternate scenario folder in the same folder as the Quake application. Now hold down the Option key and double-click on the Quake icon (or Quake RAVE or Quake 3Dfx--whichever one you normally use). A dialog box will appear with a field labeled Command Line. In this field type "-game nameofgame" Leave out the quotes and enter the real name of the game rather than "nameofgame." For example, if I wanted to play Activision's completely cool Mission Pack No. 2: Dissolution of Eternity, I'd place the ROGUE folder inside my Quake folder and at the command prompt type -game ROGUE. by Chris Breen
