For Immediate Release:
SoftArc and Apple Join Forces to Bring
Information Superhighway to Kids Grades
K-12
Đ FirstClass Communication System Now Bundled With Apple Workgroup Servers
to
Provide Schools Wth E-mail, Conferencing and Internet
Access Đ
SCARBOROUGH, ON Đ SoftArc Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of
enterprise-wide, cross-platform group communication software, today announced a
software bundle with Apple Computer, Inc. Effective immediately, Apple will
bundle SoftArcŇs FirstClass server package with its Apple Workgroup Server
(AWS) 60 and 80 models. Called the Apple Education Series Communications
Bundle, the hardware and software electronic communication product will be
offered exclusively to the K-12 education market by Apple.
The Communications Bundle is designed to streamline communications within
schools and between entire school communities. Students can collaborate on
projects and share class notes, even when they are not in the same classroom.
School administrators can have direct access to student records, curriculum
guidelines, budgets and staff information. Teachers can send memos, bulletins,
schedules, questions and meeting notes to one another. And parents can access
the system remotely to pick up homework assignments, read school news and
exchange messages with faculty.
ĎWe are proud to be working with Apple for the important K-12 market,Ë
commented Steven Asbury, president of SoftArc. ĎFirstClass is rapidly being
adopted by worldwide organizations such as KPMG-Peat Marwick, General Electric,
Dupont, Eastman Kodak and others, but the education market is where SoftArc got
its start Đ and it has remained one of our highest priorities.Ë
ĎWhile FirstClass is a powerful communications product, it is very easy to
learn and use, even for kids,Ë continued Asbury. ĎThere couldnŇt be a better
place for people to learn how to maneuver the Information Superhighway than in
the classroom at a young age.Ë
The Communications Bundle will be sold in two parts: a server and a user
license. A 25-MHz AWS 60 with FirstClass server software is priced at $2,599.
A 33-MHz AWS 80 with FirstClass is $6,389 (prices include setup and connection
to a school's existing network). Apple is offering a choice of two FirstClass
user license packages with the Communications Bundle: a 100 regular user pack
or a 250 regular user pack. Apple and SoftArc both offer identical special
educational prices on user licenses Đ the 100 user package is available at $895
(normally $2,495) and the 250-user pack is $1,495 (normally $5995). Later this
summer, Apple plans to offer customers the option of adding one of SoftArcŇs
existing FirstClass Internet gateways for private mail, mail lists and Usenet
news groups.
ĎOur goal is to make the creation and sharing of information accessible to
entire school communities Đ students, teachers, administrators and parents,Ë
explained John Santoro, AppleŇs K-12 networking product line manager.
ĎFirstClass is an excellent program because the application supports both the
high and low-end Macintosh computers and Windows machines more often found in
classrooms. Features such as conferencing, cross-platform chatting,
customizable interfaces, on-line functions and optional Internet gateways are
just some of the advanced options that differentiate FirstClass from its
competition.Ë
FirstClass is a cross-platform, enterprise-wide group communication system that
integrates state-of-the-art e-mail with group conferencing, access to existing
corporate databases, forms processing, real-time typed discussions and on-line
communications functions. FirstClass offers the same ease of use,
functionality and robust performance over network or modem, and operates in
Macintosh, Windows, DOS, OS/2 and terminal emulation environments. FirstClass
is available in 12 different languages and is used by business, educational
institutions, government and private individuals in more than 30 countries
worldwide. SoftArcŇs installed user base is approximately 1,000,000 (mailboxes
sold) and growing. The company is headquartered in Scarborough, Ontario.
Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) develops, manufactures and markets
personal computers, servers and personal interactive electronic systems for use
in business, education, the home, science, engineering and government. A
recognized pioneer and innovator in the personal computer industry, Apple does
business in more than 120 countries. The company is headquartered in
Cupertino, Calif.

SoftArc Announces Internal TCP/IP
Support for FirstClass Group
Communication Software
Đ Multiprotocol Workgroup Server To Accept IPX, AppleTalk,
Asynchronous
Connections and TCP/IP Simultaneously Đ
MARKHAM, Ontario Đ SoftArc Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of
enterprise-wide, cross-platform group communication software, today previewed
direct support for the popular Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) networking protocol in its multiprotocol groupware system FirstClass.
Internal support of TCP/IP will allow users of SoftArcŇs FirstClass client
software on Windows PCs or Macintoshes to make TCP/IP connections to a
FirstClass server by selecting TCP/IP in a connection setup popup box. SoftArc
showed its TCP/IP support at the Mactivity connectivity show this week in San
Jose, California.
Once configured with the FirstClass TCP/IP Protocol Module, the FirstClass
server will recognize the login and treat the client as any other FirstClass
user. Direct support of TCP/IP will allow users on TCP/IP networks to connect
to FirstClass servers with ease, while also allowing effortless access to
FirstClass servers Đ or even server to server connections Đ through the global
Internet.
ĎFew electronic communication systems accept multiple protocol logins
simultaneously,Ë said SoftArcŇs president, Steven Asbury. ĎFirstClassŇ
internal support for TCP/IP, along with IPX, AppleTalk and asynchronous
connections, serves to illustrate SoftArcŇs ongoing commitment to be the
premier provider of multiprotocol communication solutions. And this is just
the tip of the iceberg regarding our extended TCP/IP services Đ weŇve got much
to unveil in the near future.Ë
Users of the FirstClass client for Macintosh must run AppleŇs MacTCP extension
in order to make connections on a TCP network. Similarly, users of the
FirstClass client for Windows must have Windows configured with a Windows
Sockets-compliant TCP stack.
The FirstClass TCP/IP support has already been implemented at select corporate
sites. SoftArc will begin volume shipment of new TCP/IP-enabled versions of
its FirstClass server and clients to the general public by October. The
FirstClass TCP/IP Protocol Module will have a list price of $995 (new server
and client software will be free, as are all upgrades to FirstClass).

mac.448remo,
E ja ponovo. Ovako mašina je Mac Portable. Valjda vam to dosta govori

On se savršeno digne, dođe Desktop sve fino ide sve do
Definitivno Mac Portable. Baš je sladak :). Kompaktan. Mislim
nema nijedne druge oznake.
Ivan
mac.456madamov,
interni disk IDE. Za ostale SCSI uređaje ostaje jedan interni SCSI port (za
interni CD-ROM na primer) i eksterni SCSI port. Takođe, i novi PowerBook 150
pravim 68040, dok Performa 630 i LC 630 imaju 68LC040.
mac.455madamov,
-> #454, remo
> da li ima veze ako je namešten AppleTalk a pokušava se rad PC-u
Ako se kači samo na portable, a ovaj nije u mreži, isključi AppleTalk i neka
ide preko normalne serijske komunikacije.
> trenutka kad se isključi i stavi hard
Možda sam već pitao, ali nije zgoreg opet: koji je SCSI ID namešten na
hardu? Ne bi smeo jedino da bude 7, jer je to ID mašine (Portable-a).

TOPIC -----------------------------------------------------------
This article provides a description of the Macintosh Performa 630 computer.
DISCUSSION ------------------------------------------------------
Overview
--------
The Apple Macintosh Performa 630, and CD-ROMPequipped Performa 630CD
computers are the most flexible Apple multimedia systems. And both are
upgradeable to take advantage of PowerPC technology, so they can bring you
multimedia opportunities for years to come.
Packed in one box are the computer, display, keyboard, mouse, and fax/modem,
as well as operating system software. In addition, both computers include 15
useful home, education, and home-business soft-ware programs, and the
Performa 630CD includes valuable CD-ROM reference titles. Like all Macintosh
computers, theyUre both very easy to learn about and use, and they run
thousands of Macintosh education, business, and multimedia programs.
Both computers have advanced multimedia expansion options that offer new
ways to interact with information. You can connect each to an external video
source such as a VCR or camcorder to cut and paste video images. You can
also add an option to connect your computer to a large-screen TV for
displaying presentations. And you can add an internal TV tuner to view
television channels in a window on your display.

APPLE ANNOUNCES POWERBOOK 150
Apple today announced the PowerBook 150, the most affordable member of the
PowerBook line. Priced at $1,449, (U.S. Apple Price) the PowerBook 150 is
designed for higher education students, home and small office users, and
desktop users with casual second system needs as well as for customers who are
entering the mobile computing world for the first time.
Engineered for affordability and weighing in at only 5.5 pounds, the new
PowerBook 150 replaces the PowerBook 145B, boasting enhancements that include a
software bundle incorporating ClarisWorks and the PowerBook Mobility Bundle, a
larger display, larger hard drive, and increased RAM expansion.
"The PowerBook 150 rounds out our PowerBook family of products. We now
offer customers a complete range of products with our high-performance 500
series PowerBooks, our smallest and lightest 200 series subnotebooks and now
with the 100 series, our most affordable PowerBooks," said Brodie Keast,
Apple's vice president for PowerBook products. "With the PowerBook 150 we've
included the features that customers say they value most while still managing
to shave off a pound of weight."
Offering plug and play expandability, the PowerBook 150's built-in SCSI
port allows users to connect to hard disk drives, printers, scanners, and
CD-ROM drives. Built-in networking allows for fast and easy connection to
printers, file sharing or access to servers. An optional fax/modem allows
users to send/receive faxes and connect to a variety of information services,
including Apple's new eWorld. With memory upgradable from 4MB to 40MB, users
have ample space to grow. The PowerBook 150 form factor includes Apple's
award-winning integrated trackball, palmrests, and full-size keyboard.
With the PowerBook Mobility Bundle and ClarisWorks preinstalled, users can
put their new PowerBook to work immediately. Software includes the PowerBook
Control Strip, Macintosh PC Exchange , MacLink Plus/Easy Open Translators,
Macintosh Easy Open, PowerBook File Assistant, HyperCard Player, PowerBook 150
Backup Utility and Calendar desk accessory. ClarisWorks includes word
processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing, painting and communications modules.
Because Clarisworks runs entirely out of RAM, it rarely accesses the hard
drive, thus conserving battery life.
Accessories used in current 100 series PowerBooks including AC adapters,
batteries, battery rechargers, and modems are all compatible with the PowerBook
150. Modems designed for use in the PowerBook 145B as well as Memory Expansion
cards designed for the PowerBook 200 series are also compatible with the
PowerBook 150.

that offers a number of advanced capabilities, including exceptional print
quality, unrivaled speed, extensive networking compatibility, and flexible
expansion options. ItŇs ideal for work-group users who require superior quality

Macintosh, Windows, Novell Netware, or multivendor computing environments.
With its 600-dot-per-inch resolution enhanced with FinePrint technology, in
addition to its PhotoGrade support, the Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS provides
the outstanding print quality you needĐfast. In fact, the printer features a
fast print engine, high-performance RISC processor-based controller, and
dedicated input/output processor, which combine to provide impressive printing
speed. This high performance is supported by the Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS

bidirectional parallel port and a LocalTalk port. And all ports stay active
simultaneously, so the Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS can accept jobs from a

LaserWriter 8.2 Released
LaserWriter 8.2 has been posted to AppleLink (and probably Internet sites
too). Below is information from the read me file. Perhaps this will prove
more robust with 4D then 8.0/8.1.1.

----------------------
Apple suggests that all customers using previous versions of LaserWriter 8
upgrade to the LaserWriter 8.2 driver. There are some major fixes and some
new enhancements that make the driver easier to use.
What is new with LaserWriter 8.2 Driver?
New "Setup". The Chooser "Setup" button now automatically queries the
printer, selects the appropriate PPD file, and configures the paper trays
accordingly. Previous versions of LaserWriter 8 required you to click
"Setup" in the Chooser, click on "Auto Setup" to select the PPD file, then
click on "Configure" to set up paper trays. All of this is now completed in
step by clicking on "Setup" button. After the printer is set up, you still
have the option of manually configuring PPDs and paper trays by clicking on
the "Setup" button a second time.
Job Destination No Longer "Sticky". LaserWriter driver v8.2 now always
reverts back to "Printer" as the destination in the Print dialog box,
instead of retaining the previous print job destination. For example, if the
printer was were the last job went, the printer was the default destination
for the next job. This happened when "Printer", "File", or "Fax" was
selected. This caused problems with inadvertent faxes on PostScript Fax
capable printers. If the most recent job had "Fax" as the destination of
the job, then the next print job was automatically set for "Fax". In
addition, there are also some applications that do not provide the print
dialog box when using certain features of their program. Since you can't
change the destination, this can become a problem. However, with the
LaserWriter 8.2 driver, this is no longer a problem.
Shift Tab Feature Editable fields in all dialogs which currently support
tabbing from field to field now support reverse direction tabbing using the
shift tab feature. Applications adding fields to existing Print and Page
Setup dialogs with editable fields obtain this feature.
Program Fixes in LaserWriter 8.2 Driver?
One of the main problems fixed in this release is where PICT files with
rotated objects would print incorrectly. This was most evident with PICT
images from MacDraw Pro, and exported by other applications - rotated
objects in the PICT would not be printed at the correct location or angle.
One other problem that is now fixed, occurred when you tried printing to the
original LaserWriter (PostScript Ver 23.0). It would typically result in a
PostScript error.
There are other various fixes in LaserWriter 8.2 that address both driver
and 3rd party application issues. Apple is suggesting that if you are using
a previous version of the LaserWriter 8 driver, that you upgrade to
LaserWriter driver 8.2. Apple recommends that you use this update for both
the fixes and additional features.

Jedno pitanje: čemu služe pomenuti PPD (PostScript Printer
Definition) fajlovi?

Meni nisu potrebni, hvala.

A možda si uključio i opciju Use Color.

To nije jedan računar već generičko ime svih Apple Macintosh računara
notebook formata.
baterije traju oko sat vremena (aktivni ekran "jede" dosta struje).

The Macintosh Client/Server Database Development Summary
by Liam Breck
Revision 1.2 - 12 Dec 94
This is a summary of client-builder tools, data access layers, and database
servers applicable to Macintosh (and cross-platform) client/server database
development. It includes explanations of the three categories and describes
over 30 products. Its sources are vendors' product literature, DBMS
magazine, MacWEEK magazine, and discussions with users and vendors' tech
support staff.
It does not include information about separate products in these categories:
Non-SQL-capable tools
Ad hoc query tools (query a database in a freeform way)
Report writers
Decision support and executive information tools (do complex data analysis)
CASE tools (automate the design of databases)
Administration tools
Screen scrapers (place GUIs over terminal interfaces)
Tools which support deployment to Mac, but not development on Mac
Some of the products described herein are actually better suited than the
leading Mac databases for smaller multi-user database applications.
Features such as a flexible query language, full-featured GUI tools, and
comprehensive language libraries are very important even for small
projects, while capabilities like transparent connectivity and
cross-platform delivery let small systems grow easily into large services.
The leading Mac database tools lack most of this functionality.

Changes in revision 1.2:
Two client-builder descriptions added
Three client-builder descriptions revised
Two data access layer descriptions added
One database server description added
Two database server descriptions revised
Plans for future revisions:
Mention of Smalltalk-based tools
Coverage of data access layers for specific 3GL-based UI toolkits
--- Client Application Development Tools ---
Client applications are the users' windows into databases which are usually
located on other machines on the network. The following tools assist in
constructing such apps. And I do mean ASSIST. Don't believe the hype about
building clients in a few hours without writing any code. Another caveat is
that many of these products were developed originally for a different OS,
and not all such tools support the Mac as well as they should.
Most client-builder tools include these features:
support for development on and deployment to the major OS platforms
transparent access to various data sources
("The major database servers" generally means Oracle, Sybase and
possibly Informix and ODBC-accessible servers. See next section.)
a graphical GUI builder with special objects for data presentation
a (possibly OO) language with a full-featured library
library extensiblity with internal and external functions or classes
an interpreter or GUI testing capability
a debugger
And some also include these:
a database modeling/definition tool
a SQL database engine for development use
a graphical query builder
a graphical report writer
support for development teams
a compiler which generates native code, pseudo-code or 3GL code
a reasonable memory footprint for compiled apps :-)
GUI builder extensibility
data access system extensiblity to initially unsupported data sources
a business rule modeling system, which obviates the need to implement
such rules throughout the GUI
distribution of application components across a network
no runtime/distribution fees
Omnis 7 by Blyth, once primarily aimed at desktop and workgroup database
development, has been retargeted at the client/server market. It is a
4GL-based, cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2, Unix, Windows NT)
client-builder that accesses many database servers. Blyth's single- and
multi-user database engines are available separately. It is probably the
most popular client-builder product for the Mac currently.
Uniface by Uniface is a 4GL-based, cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2,
Unix) client-builder. It includes a system for implementing the business
rules that govern data, the ability to partition the application among
different networked systems, support for development teams, and fairly wide
reaching database server access.
VisualWorks by ParcPlace is a Smalltalk-based cross-platform (Mac, MS
Windows, OS/2, Unix) environment. It includes a comprehensive, extensible
class library, a system for mapping relational data to user-defined
classes, and a pseudo-compiler. It accesses the major database servers.
Runtime modules are required.
Vision by Unify is a cross platform (Mac, MS Windows, Unix, Windows NT)
client-builder featuring a pseudo-compiled 4GL, support for development
teams and access to a variety of database servers. Vision automates the
creation of a number of common features that other tools may not. Runtime
modules are required.
C/S Elements by Neuron Data is a cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2,
Unix) client-builder that generates C code for compilation by a third party
compiler. It includes a somewhat extensible class library and support for
scripting in its 4GL, C and C++. A business rules development add-on is
available. It accesses the major database servers.
Forms (formerly SQL*Forms) by Oracle is part of the CDE family of tools. It
is a cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2, Unix, Windows NT) front-end
tool for Oracle servers, though other servers can be accessed via
middleware. It supports development teams and its language is based on SQL
with procedural extensions. It does not work on the PowerMac yet.
DataEdit by Brio Technology is a low-end, cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows)
client-builder. Its GUI builder is somewhat limited and it allows only
simple 4GL scripting. It features a data modeling tool, and accesses the
major database servers. Runtime modules are required.
CPX by Prograph is a completely grahical object-oriented "language" and
development environment that includes an extensible class library,
interpreter and compiler. Extensions to access the major database servers
are available separately. It's currently only available for the Mac, but
MS Windows and Unix versions are in the works.
Visual AppBuilder by Novell is another completely graphical environment in
which applications are created by linking components (ALMs). It is
cross-platform (Mac Q4 94, MS Windows), but portability requires compatible
ALMs on the target platforms. It includes a compiler, and ALMs to access
the major database servers are available separately. Eventually, it will
support network distribution of applications.
Hypercard by Apple [Info needed about data access XCMDs.]
Forte by Forte Software is a cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, and Unix
clients plus others as servers) tool for constructing very large scale,
distributed applications. It is based on an OO4GL, generates C++, and
automates the distribution of services across diverse networked systems. It
assumes development teams and accesses a wide range of database servers.
Galaxy by Visix is a cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2, Unix, Windows
NT, VMS) environment based on C or C++. It is a high end product featuring
a rich application framework that supports distributed applications. It
requires a third party compiler. An add-on product to provide access to
the major database servers will be released soon.
PowerBuilder by PowerSoft is an OO4GL-based cross-platform (Mac Q1 95, MS
Windows, others planned) client-builder. It comes with a pseudo-code
compiler, support for development teams, a multi-user database server and
broad database server access. This is a very popular product, though the
current version is said to be a bit buggy.
JAM by JYACC is a cross-platform (Mac by Q2 95, MS Windows, DOS, OS/2,
Unix, Windows NT, VMS) client-builder based on a pseudo-compiled 4GL. It
includes a development database engine, support for development teams and
access to many database servers. It requires a third party C++ compiler.
SQLWindows by Gupta is a 4GL-based client-builder for MS Windows. Versions
for other platforms, including Mac, are under development. It comes with
3GL and pseudo-code compilers, support for development teams, a multi-user
database server, and access to a variety of database servers.
NewEra by Informix is a cross-platform (Mac Q? 95, MS Windows, Unix)
client-builder with an OO4GL, extensible class libraries, pseudo-code and
3GL compilers and support for development teams. It primarily supports the
Informix database server; other servers are accessible via middleware.
4D Passport by ACI is a client-builder based on 4th Dimension. 4D was not
designed for SQL access, though it has been extended to access some SQL
servers. Its model for the user interface of an app is odd, and working
around it is awkward and requires third party extensions. It may support
development teams and a compiler is available for its 4GL. Its single- and
multi-user database engines are not SQL-accessible. MS Windows support is
planned (Q3 95).
FoxPro by Microsoft is a cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows) database package
that can access SQL servers via ODBC. Its local database is also
SQL-accessible via an ODBC driver. Like 4D it was not designed for SQL
access, and its 4GL and GUI builder are limited.
Many Mac developers roll their own client-builder toolkits around a C++ or
Smalltalk compiler and a (possibly cross-platform) application framework.
One would also add a data access layer (see next section), and a
development database engine such as Personal Butler. A third party GUI
builder, such as AppMaker by Bowers Development (v2 of which is nearing
release), is also a useful addition.
One last product, this one on the horizon. I've heard that a cross-platform
database development package which generates C++ for a wide variety of
compilers and frameworks may be in the offing for next year. I'm told that
the interface builder is killer, SQL data access is simplified by a
sophistocated graphical query builder, it comes with a quality database
server and it's amazingly flexible and extensible.
--- Data Access Layers ---
A data access layer is an API that lets you submit statements in SQL (the
standard database management language) from clients on different platforms
to (possibly diverse) data servers, and handles the network protocols and
server differences behind the scenes. It provides a function library which
can be called from 3GL (and some 4GL) environments, and (in some cases)
intermediate server software that resides on the server host and passes
client requests to the database engine. The implementation of the library
for a particular client platform, network and data server is usually called
a driver, and a client needs a driver for each data source it accesses.
There are two types of data access APIs, server-specific "native" systems
from server vendors (Sybase Open Client, Oracle OCI/SQL*Net, Informix Net,
etc.), and server-general "middleware" systems from third parties (listed
below). Native systems are tuned for their target servers, do not require
intermediate server software, and generally perform better than middleware
systems. Middleware systems are useful where the API is not transparent
(ie, in a 3GL) and there are diverse servers, or when a native solution is
not available for a required data source. (Non-relational database systems,
in which 85% of all corporate data is said to be housed, often do not have
native APIs.) Transparent support for different data access APIs,
especially native ones, exists in many of the client-builders listed above.
DAL (originally CL/1), from Independence Technologies, was an Apple product
until recently and has been around for a while, so it is the most prevalent
middleware system currently employed on Mac clients. It supports several
network protocols, including Appletalk and TCP/IP. It adds some useful
extensions to SQL which enable offloading of some data processing from
client to server. However, its performance may be limited in some
environments. It accesses the major database servers on a variety of host
platforms. It is used in concert with the Data Access Manager API of the
MacOS and also supports MS Windows clients. It supports a number of
development environments.
SequeLink by TechGnosis is popular on the Mac because it also supports
Appletalk, as well as TCP/IP, Netware and other protocols. It accesses a
wide range of database servers on varying host platforms, and supports many
client platforms and development environments.
EDA/SQL by Information Builders also supports Mac clients, however it does
not speak Appletalk, so Macs must use TCP/IP or another protocol. It also
accesses a wide range of data servers, including non-relational systems, on
different host platforms, and supports many client platforms and
development tools.
Open Client by Sybase can be combined with their Open Server intermediate
software to allow access via the Open Client API to a range of database
servers, including non-relational ones, on various host platforms. It
supports DECNet and TCP/IP protocols and a range of client platforms and
development environments.
ODBC is a Microsoft invention for which Apple has recently released a Mac
SDK. Unlike the other middleware mentioned, it is implemented with
client-side drivers alone. Driver development is the province of server
vendors and third parties, and thus the availability of Mac drivers may be
limited if vendors perceive the demand as small. Network protocols are not
specified; the driver vendor implements network support as needed. A driver
is usually implemented as a translator for a native API, resulting in poor
performance. ODBC is criticized for its three-level specification which
means different drivers may not support the same functions. Microsoft is
beginning to downplay ODBC in favor of new OLE capabilities.
Q+E Database Library by InterSolve (formerly Q+E Software) is a
cross-platform (Mac, MS Windows, OS/2, Unix, Windows NT) layer which
accesses data sources via ODBC drivers (from Intersolve and other vendors).
It is intended to ease the implementation of client ODBC capability. It
comes with a graphical query builder and query by example functions, and
supports a variety of client development environments.
DataScript by General Knowledge is a data access layer for use with
AppleScript. It supports a variety of native and middleware APIs for
connections to a wide range of database servers. AppleScript-capable
applications or development environments are necessary to use data
retrieved by DataScript.
Glue by Oracle aspires to be the be-all-and-end-all of middleware,
promising access to diverse database, mail and file servers from
applications and development tools on all client platforms via any network
protocol. Its present state is somewhat more humble, however. On the Mac it
currently only supports access to Oracle servers from a few applications
and development environments.
--- Database Servers ---
Database servers are the workhorses in a client/server system. They consist
of two integrated components, an SQL parser and a native database
management system. They translate and optimize SQL queries for their native
DBMS, perform the queries and return the results to clients. Data servers
generally need significant horsepower in the host computer and
multi-tasking capability in the host operating system in order to process
queries from concurrent users in a reasonable time frame. Due to these
requirements there are just a few, lighter-duty servers available for the
MacOS. The PowerPC-based PowerMac, running PowerOpen (Apple's and IBM's new
Unix), Netware, or a future MacOS, has the potential to attract more server
vendors to Apple hardware. Versions of these operating systems for the
PowerMac are still under development, however.
Butler by Everyware Development is the most popular SQL server for the
MacOS. It is accessible by DAL and (soon) ODBC. The new version (now in
beta) is said to be much faster than the previous one, and faster still
when accessed via ODBC, support for which is actually built into the
engine. Personal Butler is a local-access version (useful for development)
that runs on the same Mac as the client.
dtF by dtF is a cross-platform (MacOS, MS Windows, OS/2, Unix) SQL server
that comes in single-user library and multi-user server versions. It is
accessible via its own data access API which can be used in various
development environments. ODBC accessibility is in the works. Its
performance is said to be excellent.
Oracle for Mac is an implementation of Oracle v6 for the MacOS that comes
in local-access and remote-access versions. They do not work on the
PowerMac, however. Oracle7 is available for AUX, Apple's Unix OS, but not
the MacOS (and hence not the PowerMac since AUX does not run on it).
Local-access (Q1 95) and remote-access (Q3 95) versions of Oracle7 for the
PowerMac (under MacOS) are scheduled. Oracle servers are accessible by
Oracle's native data access layer.
P.INK SQL by P.INK Gmbh of Germany is a cross-platform (Mac, Unix),
multi-user SQL server. It is DAL-accessible.
Inside Out by Sierra Software will be available in SQL-accessible versions
for the MacOS as both a single-user library and a multi-user server around
Q2 95. Details are a bit sketchy yet, but the products should be Oracle7
compatible in terms of access and functionality.
Faircom SQL Server by Faircom is a cross-platform engine which is
accessible via their c-tree Plus API and ODBC. A version for the MacOS is
under development and should be available by Q2 95.
Watcom SQL and Gupta SQLBase are being ported to the Mac, but they are
likely to be available only with the development environments that bundle
them (PowerBuilder and SQLWindows).

mac.507madamov,
mac.508madamov,
ą MacGzip 0.2 (gzip 1.2.4)
This application is the GNUŇs gzip for the Macintosh.
Works only with system 7.x or later (I guess)
Changes 0.1ž3 -> 0.2
ą Enabled '(don't) Quit When Finished' Preference (see README)
ą Fixed bug with name too long
ą Cmd-Arrow keys change Compression Level in Prefs Dialog
ą Do osEvt & diskEvt
ą Cosmetic changes in Prefs dialog, About & progress window
ą Aligned ics* icons for .Z files (Rebuild your Desktop!)
ą gzip called always with -N (see GNU docs)
Changes 0.1ž2 -> 0.1ž3
ą Fixed odd adress in 68000. (0.1ž3 runs on Plus and SE)
Changes 0.0ž -> 0.1ž2
ą Included source
ą Modified 'About...' dialog to show GNU's Public Licence
ą Now the warning when resource fork is not empty pops up when opening
documents from finder, too.
ą Compiled for 68000 instead of 68020 (yes, there are SE's with system 7)
ą Remember window position in the prefs file
Changes 0.0ž -> 0.1ž
ą Now MacGzip accepts any type of file. WARNING: If you are updating from
version 0.0ž, probably you should rebuild your desktop to be able of Drag&Drop
any files on MacGzip. (To do this, press cmd-opt when the Finder is starting)
ą When compressing files, MacGzip will warn you if the input file has resource
fork.
ą Now uncompress large Unix compress files (.Z) works correctly
ą When you Drag&Drop files on MacGzip, you can use the next keys to override
your existing settings:
'option key' : The file will be compressed
'a' : Use ascii mode (uncompress only)
'b' : Use binary mode (uncompress only)
ą Now, the 'done' sound is not a system beep.
ą Not used option "-q" (more warnings and explanations)
ą Fixed a bug that made the Mac crash when the input file was corrupted

februarski broj engleskog izdanja MacWorld-a.

Turn on virtual memory
Virtual memory (VM) is a feature of the Macintosh that lets you use part of
your hard disk as additional memory. If you are using an application program
designed especially for Power Macintosh computers (that is, a ĎnativeË
application program), turning on virtual memory may help you avoid running out
of memory.
Your computer comes with virtual memory already turned on. With virtual memory
turned on, a Power Macintosh program uses less memory than when virtual memory
is turned off. If you check the programŇs Get Info box before and after turning
on virtual memory, youŇll see that the numbers in the Memory Requirements
portion of the box have changed. This is because turning on virtual memory
allows the program to use memory more efficiently.
For information on how to turn on virtual memory, choose Macintosh Guide from
the Guide (question mark) menu. Then click ĎHow do I use hard disk space as
memory?Ë and ĎHow do I manage Power Macintosh memory?Ë in the Memory topic
area.
Note: Try setting VM on Power Macs to 50% more than the amount of physical
memory (RAM)Đfor instance, if your computer has 8 MB of RAM, set VM to 12 MB.
You can also add physical memory (RAM) to your computer. See the userŇs guide
that came with your computer for more information.
Technical Information about virtual memory
The information below provides a more technical explanation of why most Power
Macintosh users should turn on virtual memory (VM).
Background
When you turn on VM, your Power Macintosh computer is able to take advantage of
a feature called file mapping. File mapping can significantly reduce the amount
of physical memory required to launch a native application.
In a recent study of native Power Macintosh application programs (programs
specially designed for Power Macintosh computers), Apple Computer found that
with VM turned on, nearly 2 megabytes of RAM (memory) is saved when the
programs open.
On a Power Macintosh computer, you can save RAM simply by turning VMĐit is not
necessary to set VM to a large amount.
How VM works on a non-PowerPC (68k) Macintosh
On a 68k system, the Segment Loader loads as much of the application as
possible into memory. The amount of memory available is determined by the
amount of available memory and the applicationŇs ĎheapË size. (You set the heap
size in the Get Info box).
If you increase an 8 MB system to 12 MB using VM, the computer creates a 12 MB
space on the hard disk. When the system accesses instructions or data that are
not resident in memory, a Ďpage faultË occurs. A page fault causes the system
to write the least recently used ĎpageË to disk; then the system ĎswapsË in the
page that contains the required data. This mechanism keeps the most frequently
used pages in physical memory (Ďworking setË) and the least frequently used
ones in the VM space on the disk. The locations of each page are kept straight
by VM and the Memory Management Unit (MMU).
How VM works on a Power Macintosh computer
With native application programs on Power Macintosh computers, there is no
Segment Loader. When VM is turned off, a native program is loaded into memory
as a contiguous block. The amount of memory space required for all of the
programËs code can be quite large.
However, native application programs comply with a strict new specification for
the types of data that reside in the data and resource forks. In particular,
the data fork contains read-only data for the program, while the resource fork
contains information that can be modified. This is an important distinction:
this specification assures that when VM is turned on the Code Fragment Manager
(CFM) can take advantage of file mapping.
With file mapping active, only part of the resource fork must be loaded into
memory. Items in the data fork of the application can remain on disk and will
be ĎmappedË into memory by CFM as needed. This arrangementdramatically reduces
the amount of data that must be immediately copied into memory when a program
is launched. Also, read-only items in the data fork can be discarded when a
page fault occurs, rather than writing the old information out to the disk.
This reduces a write-read cycle to a single read. This is why the performance
of VM is better on a Power Macintosh computer than on a 68k computer, even
though the core code is unchanged.
Apple Computer recommends setting VM on Power Macs to 50% more than the amount
of physical memoryĐfor instance, if your computer has 8 MB of RAM, set VM to 12
MB. If you want the best performance possible, but still want a reduced
application footprint of file-mapping, set VM to the minimum amount.

> On a 68k system, the Segment Loader loads as much of the
> application as possible into memory.
> With file mapping active, only part of the resource fork
> must be loaded into memory. Items in the data fork of the
> application can remain on disk and will be *mapped* into
> memory by CFM as needed. This arrangement dramatically
> reduces the amount of data that must be immediately copied
> into memory when a program is launched.
Praktično i NE UČITAVA native data fork.
procesor). U trenutku kada mu *stvarno* određeni podatak treba,
programer SAMO adresira memorijsku lokaciju.
> This is
> why the performance of VM is better on a Power Macintosh
> computer than on a 68k computer, even though the core code
> is unchanged. (*)
> If you want the best performance possible, but still
> want a reduced application footprint of file-mapping, set
> VM to the minimum amount.

mac.515madamov,
Breakout (Wall u Spektrumovoj terminologiji B)).
sistemskih stvari ga podržavaju Stickies, Scrapbook, Note Pad, a podržava ga i

memorije. Malo sam eksperimentisao i uvek mi doda taj famozni megabajt. Imaš li
neko objašnjenje za to?

Ne znam... a nisam ni najbolje shvatio: u kvadratiću piše 12, a gde piše
13? Je l' u Get Info?
A ako Get Info da više, verovatno računa u pristupačnu

Ne u Get Info, već kad odabereš About This Macintosh. Piše ovako:
Built-In memory: 8.192 K
Total memory: 13.132 K
13.132 K used as RAM on Macintosh HD
E, sad nije baš celih 13 Mb ali je više od 12 Mb, i to ne malo (12,82....).

Treba da otvoriš ZTerm i fajl Zterm MacCustom fonts ResEdit-om.
resurse novim i snimiš ZTerm.
sve NFNT resurse i ostavi samo svoje FONT resurse.
